Deviance in Am. Lit. He always wears a suit & tie. He's from the south'n US - 1st semester here. Great looking. Teach? gives lots of info, but nothing about what he actually wants on essays. Gives list of what he doesn't want ... lvs u guessing. Still early in semester. . .
I am in love with the course.
Very passionate about course material and an engaging lecturer. He's a hard marker but dedicated to helping students with their essays. Seek him out at all costs!
This prof from N Carolina is a bit intense at times. He knows what he wants, but doesn't really explain it as far as essays go. He is ready to work with any student. He is generally pleasant; dresses well for SFU. He is clear about his requirements regarding reading, and to use his own words is very unhappy when students don't do the work.
This guy is demanding and can come off as intimitdating, but he's hilarious and very clear. I'd take a class with him again in a second.
Dr. Everton is an awesome lecturer and I look forward to taking more courses with him. He seems very comfortable in front of the class and manages to keep everyone engaged and (as a first for me) interested. He's also compiled an exceptional reading list. Gives Americans a good name.
I great teacher who really know his stuff and loves teaching. He's a lot of fun, but he expects you to do your reading and know your stuff. A bit of a hard marker on papers, but if you take the time to write them well, then you can geta good grade.
Initially, Everton comes off as scary and intimidating, but he is actually quite funny and a great lecturer. Fair assignments and final exam. I would recommend him, but be prepared to work hard and defend any comments or opinions you make in class.
Fabulous professor - his lectures were really interesting and interactive, and the reading list he compiled as a representative cross-section of 19th century American Lit was excellent. Gives a long list of possible essay topics and also lets you pick your own. Both essays are weighted equally, so there is no "final" paper. He's also really hot.
Michael Everton is the sexiest professor of all time.
Great prof! Took the course because I needed an english course and poetry seemed like one with time spent oon readings. I ended up really enjoying the course. He set realistic expectations for the class which was nice for a change. He has such a passion for the topic that it becomes infectuous. I highly recommend taking a class with him.
He makes the lectures very interesting and is clear about what he expects. It's not difficult to do well but make sure you interact with your TAs. Essays and final were very fair game, take notes! Awesome prof, this course has very little reading; recommended for people who need to fulfill their W requirement or enjoy interesting lectures.
Intro to Poetry with Everton is a good class, esp if you enjoy poetry. I thought it was a great class! He structures the class well so those people who dont get poetry can still understand something. As well he is very welcoming of outside comments. I recommend going to the office hours if you're confused.
Great teacher! Makes class interesting, and passionate about what he does. Take his class!!!
The best Professor I've had at SFU hands down. I'm already trying to find out if I can take more classes from him. And yes, he's definitely a fox. I've spoken to a few other students, and he definitely has quite the female following... But it really comes from his energy and his dedication to his work. Very rare to find someone this motivating.
Michael Everton is a really wonderful professor. He is passionate, straightforward, and very flexible with assignments, due dates, etc. Lectures were always fun, and he really pushes students to follow through on their opinions... my favourite prof at SFU so far!
Amazing. Seriously amazing. In ten years he'll be Ivy League. I have never had a teacher this dedicated and passionate. If you are at SFU, it would be a crime never to have a class with Everton. He could probably make me like Milton - he's that good. A tip for survival: If you don't know how to use a semicolon, JUST DON'T USE IT.
Awesome, awesome, awesome. Possibly the best class I have ever taken.
By far my favourite prof. His lectures are so organized and informative while still remaining funny and engagaing. I would walk out of each class knowing that I had learned a lot. My advice to other students: take a class with Michael Everton!
WOW. Really, I felt assaulted. He is passionate, I'll give him that much. I managed a low A, but for a first year class -- and a summer one at that -- I felt I was forced to put in more work than necessary. I hope you read this Dr. Everton and note the fabulous, correct use of dashes. Take that. Pow.
Very good prof and very good at explaining things. I really learned a lot in the course. The marking was hard for a first year course, I am in my third year and this class I used as a med school requirement. I would take another class with him. Always willing to answer questions. Material was interesting. One of the best profs at SFU I'd say.
I've been lucky enough to have Michael for both 206 and 347 and he is AMAZING. Extremely passionate about what he teaches, whether it's Poe or Melville. He's incredibly receptive to feedback and offering extra help. If it were up to me, my entire English degree would be American Lit and taught by Michael!
If you see Everton's name on a course outline, take, take, TAKE. His classes are fantastic on all levels, but I highly recommend his 3rd & 4th year courses. Absolutely brilliant man.
How could you not take a class with Everton if you're an English major? He is just flat out the best there is.
Sarcastic, funny, intelligent and incredibly good looking. Definitely worth taking this class despite the fact that he and his TAs were all hard markers. Poems were interesting and discussion was encouraged, go to office hours and you'll be fine.
Very funny guy and an incredible lecturer. He is one of the best profs i've ever had at SFU! If you need a writing course, take it w/ him!!
My interest in english and poetry is about as low as it can be. However, this course has been one of my favorites taken at SFU solely because Everton is such a great professor. Although a hard marker, his lectures are engaging and funny!
holy crap is this guy awesome! so passionate and well-spoken and articulate. this class was also easy as hell and a great GPA booster. not to mention the amazing, well dressed eye candy at the front of the room
The BEST prof I've had: lives up to what we all dream uni is like. Singlehandedly saved my semester from being total boredom and hell. Very eloquent,clear,focused,passionate...it's contagious. Cares about his students. Cares about learning. I leave his classes with a buzz, wanting to write.
You learn a lot from Mike, but if you take this class, don't expect to get an A. I've gotten the worst marks EVER for an English class because him and his TAs are hard markers. It really depends on what you value when you take an English course - your grade, or how much you learn. IT IS an engaging class and I enjoyed it for the most part.
Great guy! Very passionate and makes class interesting BUT a VERY hard maker! This is my worst mark ever in three yrs at univeristy! I have averaged an A- in my English courses up until now. Final marks aren't in but based on my current marks with him I'm getting a C! :(
Best English class so far. I didn't think I'd like American lit but he made it AWESOME! He marks fair-you can get a good grade in his class but you have to think critically and outside the box. Very willing to help. If you can take a class with him-you won't regret it!
Heard a lot of great things, so I'm disappointed. This prof can't control discussions and lets students ramble endlessly. Office hours are always full because he's busy giving long private lectures to the weakest students and then runs out of time for people with real paper questions. This class is a mess.
I don't know what the person below is talking about. I'm in the same class, and it's not at all as this person describes. Everton is the man! He's one of the best profs I've had at SFU. I think someone is just bitter because they turned in a weak midterm paper.
The person underneath me is probably one of the students that the student 2 posts down was complaining about. Everton is a hero but this was not his finest hour.
Oh, Everton. Best prof ever. Yeah, he's hot, but what's important is that he's smart, funny, passionate, considerate, and one heck of a dresser. I've had him two sems in a row now. If I could take him till grad I would. His mentoring has greatly improved my writing. Really takes extra time for the students. Best discussions ever. Every1 contributed
Fabulous prof- I can't say enough positive things about him. He made me want to go to the 8:30am classes. Incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, funny, attractive, and all-around amazing. I left knowing so much more knowledge and respect for English. If you have a chance to take a course with him, do it. You will not regret it. Make sure your papers ha
Dr. Everton is fair, dedicated, and just wonderful. I already miss having him as a professor.
I echo every positive comment that has been previously stated. He IS the best in the English department. I've learned more from him than from any other professor. However, I received a C, so if you're looking to get an A in a more laid-back environment, I suggest looking elsewhere for a course.
Dr. Everton is the best professor of english I have ever had. His passion for literature is infectious!! He picks interesting texts and his lectures are engaging and informative. He is charming and funny too! I will definitely take more classes with him. I would HIGHLY recommend him as a prof!!
Really hard marker, he will see right through any attempts at sneaking your way through the course. Ripped my papers to shreds, but was SO SO SO helpful. Will sit down with you and scrutinize your writing style. He will bend over backwards to make you a better student. Top five teachers of my entire academic career.
A God among mere mortals. He's a self-admitted hard marker but is absolutely WILLING to help you thru the writing process if you want/need. Helpful, articulate, engaging, funny, intelligent and PASSIONATE about what he's teaching. I will definitely take more of his classes in the future. I appreciate English much more now because of this man.
Seemed entirely pompous. I get that he's cares more about teaching than about students grades but seriously? He spent half the time jumping on his desk. I felt like he was auditioning for the role of "spirited teacher" in a movie Self-patronizing. The class was more about HIM than the topics we covered. Expect to do a LOT of work with little reward
It's usually difficult for professors to cultivate a discussion based culture within the classroom, but somehow Everton seems to do it and do it well! Definitely not a class you can just laze about in -- he's a tough marker. However, the class is just so enjoyable that on pure edification I would recommend this class.
Very engaging, connects the readings together. Great lecturer, but talks really fast - make sure to write fast.
He is honestly the best professor ever! I look forward to going to class because he makes it so enjoyable. His was the only midterm I have EVER come out of feeling confident, and not because it was easy or because I studied, but because he lectures in a way that makes the material STICK. Readings are also well-chosen and interesting.
Awesome teacher! Lectures are always interesting, especially due to his passion for the material. He's really good at saying "you NEED to know this" and saying it a couple times so you can write it down. Always willing to chat and help. Notes on the overhead are limited so you need to take good ones. I highly recommend taking a class with him!
Professor Everton is one of the best lecturers I have had the pleasure to encounter. He is funny, energetic and passionate about the material. He's approachable & friendly, with a great sense of humour. Each lecture is like reading a compelling essay - when it comes to writing his exams you KNOW everything because he has presented it so concisely.
Best prof I've ever had. I hope I can take the remainder of my english classes with him. He's gorgeous, but also such an amazing lecturer. He's engaging and makes the material really stick. I looked forward to going to class every time. Came out of class wanting to do all my readings for next week. He and the TAs are really hard markers though.
Uhh... I wanted to record his voice so I could listen to it again and again and again....He's a great prof and I learned so much.
This is the second class I've taken with Everton, and my first upper level. His lectures are really dense, so I highly advised not skipping out. Seminars are full of discussion and he directs them well. He's very engaging and clear. He's also always willing to help with papers, so go talk to him! It's not an easy class, but it's totally worth it!
Everton is the best prof I've had in all my years at SFU (and trust me, I've been here a WHILE, so I've seen my fair share). I highly encourage you to go see him prior to writing your paper, and with a draft AS you write. He doesn't mind procrastinators so just do it. SO HELPFUL, great guy.
Best English professor at SFU. He is organized, clear, interesting, entertaining and fair.
Highly Entertaining
The best Prof I've had. He's so spirited and interesting to listen to in lecture, he's fun, intelligent, and you can really tell that he's passionate about English.
The absolute best!
Very good lecturer- very engaging, passionate about the subject. You WILL feel his affection for poetry. Encourages to seek for help if needed. Will slow down and repeat things several times if he wants you to know it word-for-word. Relatively light course load compared to other Engl 100 level classes- 2 papers and a final, not too much reading.
Everton is my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest. -- Highly recommended.
Everton was alright. He acted like he was auditioning for Robin William's role in Dead Poets Society. His craziness was just a bit too much for me to enjoy the class. Also, his TA's tend to mark super hard; I've gotten better marks in a 300 level English class. Overall, I wouldn't recommend, although he is quite attractive.
Best professor I have ever had. No other professor has improved my writing so much...he truly cares and will spend as much time with you as you need. You must work hard in his class, but it is rewarding! Super hilarious guy, very friendly, amazingly intelligent. TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM.
Really friendly, approachable guy; super eager to discuss and exchange ideas. Genuinely likes teaching and he's quite dedicated to making you improve. That being said, he's a really tough marker, but if you go talk to him and as for help, you're writing can only improve for there. If you want to do anything in American Lit., he's your man.
Mike is just one of those professors that you wish you'd met in your first year. He's passionate, outgoing, and helpful--making even the 800 page Moby Dick seem approachable and even (dare I say it) enjoyable. His was the first paper I got a C on, and the first A I truly appreciated. Truly a great professor.
I'm basing my clarity rating off his final exam, because all my papers were marked by my TA. Everton is passionate and always willing to help, one of the best profs at SFU
He was a great professor, he didn't add a lot of notes to his lecture slides so it was important to attend lectures but by far one of my favourite professors.
Gorgeous and funny. Hard class.
Hilarious
Second class with him and it was just as great as the first time. ;) Be sure to take ENG 102 with him in the fall.
Professor Everton was great! Lectures were very helpful as he would carefully analyze and break down the assigned readings. Take good notes on his interpretations of the readings, as they will be a big help for papers. The final exam was long, but if you've paid attention in class & took detailed notes, you will do well.
Not once have I looked at the time during his lectures.
Extremely brilliant prof as well as my easiest course this semester, lectures are really engaging and he is ridiculously passionate about what he is teaching. Was pleasantly surprised with the profs at SFU as i wasn't expecting lecturers to be so excited about what they were teaching. Makes me want to take all of his classes
Professor Everton is seriously one of the most interesting profs I've ever had. Super smart guy, knows how to keep an audience paying attention. Lectures are extremely engaging and he does a great job of breaking the poem down to the core. I would take this class again! No textbook, just make sure you take notes on his interpretation of the poems.
Such a great professor, as my first professor ever in post secondary, he has done an amazing job of making my first year memorable. He is so passionate in what he does and always repeats the most important things you need to know. Also, his voice is very clear, with his charming Virginia roots he is hilarious and I loved the course in general!
Amazing teacher! Dr. Everton clearly loves both teaching and the subject, and is super high energy and engaging. You won't have a lecture where he doesn't make you laugh out loud, even when you're reading depressing poems (which is very often, btw). The couse material is super interesting and made even more so by the way he teaches it! NO TEXTBOOK
Dr. Everton was very energetic, excited about lecture, and hilarious. The content in the class is super easy to understand, the work load was not too much just 4 papers (1 was minor) and made poetry bearable! Overall he is a great prof, would take this class again and the marking was not tough. Awesome Prof!!! would strongly recommend!
Wonderful experience with him in Engl 102W. Lectures were interesting and engaging. Course material isn't hard - show up for lecture because his notes are important. He is very clear with his expectations and course material. He emphasizes what will be on the exam, and well prepares his students. Would definitely recommend a class with him.
He is so good looking. Everything I go to lecture my mind is blown away by his amazingly profound interpretations of poetry. I thought I was a fan of poetry but he transformed me into a poetry analyzing genius. He is amazing, you actually enjoy going to lecture. I was so sad when this class ended. I would take this class again in a heartbeat.
Professor Everton was my favourite prof this semester. His lectures are so entertaining. I was never a really big fan of poetry but he was so inspirational that he made me love poetry! The grading for papers were pretty tough but the final was easy. If you come to all the lectures & not study for the final, you will be guaranteed at least a pass!
Fantastic prof! His lectures are always interesting and at times mind blowing (for me at least). A really charismatic guy with a lot of passion for the subject. Fabulous lecturer! I never found myself bored in his class or looking at the clock. Very approachable too! Loved my TA as well! Lecture mandatory. Side note: he's also very attractive
I was not into poetry but his lectures were so inspirational that I actually enjoyed the course a lot. You must attend lecture to pass. There is not much to read like other english courses. He is amazing.
Absolutely the best prof there is out there. He's passionate about what he teaches and very articulate about what he expects in papers. I looked forward to going to his class every time.
I did fairly well in his class. He is a good lecturer, as in he knows his stuff. In all honesty, he belittles you and acts like he is the son of Einstein. Wrong, he is far from it. He marks very hard and is picky. GPA downer. If you're interested in theory, take his course, he overkills it. He is the abject. Stay away. You've been warned
From my experience (102/347), Mr. Everton truly cares about his students. Yes, he is a hard (yet fair) marker, but he gives detailed feedback and is more than willing to work with you to improve your writing. He has high standards, but it is only because he knows you can reach them. My papers went from a C- to an A while in his classes; its doable.
Best prof I have ever had. Mike is amazing at lecturing and made me see poetry (and English in general) in a whole new way. TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM! He may expect a lot from you but it will be a great experience altogether.
What an amazing prof! Tough grader: yes, great feedback: also yes. Dr. Everton has officially destroyed all other english courses for me. I LOVED his poetry class, and as long as you basically memorize details about the poems (he will tell you the ones to note) the final exam is a cake walk. Got 95 on the final and 91 in the course.
Dr. Everton was an amazing lecturer! Although he is a tough grader, he gives awesome feedback on your writing to help you improve. He gave me a whole new perspective on English in general. He didn't allow any technology in class this semester, so beware if you take all your notes electronically. Would highly recommend taking a class with him!
One of the best professors I have ever had. Funny, smart, engaging and it helps that he's handsome! He's a tough grader though, but his feedback tells you exactly what needs to be done to improve. Also, while lecturing if something he says will be on the test, he will tell us, and repeat the sentence multiple times so we can write it down.
He's an awesome professor. I took his class (347) in last year, and I still remember its contents. He gives all the help and feedback for you to improve your writing and is super approachable. The course was a challenge, but it made my writing to improve a lot, and I hope to take his course again if I have an opportunity to do so.
Super engaging and funny. Class flies by! The lectures are super focused and thought out. He finds knows how to make english entertaining and enjoyable!
Dr. Everton is very engaged in his lectures, has a great sense of humour, and always has a very structured course. Although the grading criteria is tough, it is fair. Don't try to ask questions during class though, he probably won't answer them. Overall, very interesting lectures and easy to understand.
I absolutely love Dr. Everton! Such an amazing teacher, keeps lectures fun and engaging, and is very interested in what he is discussing. Finals are highly based on whether you show up to class and read all the material, but he is fair. Super funny guy, who made me love English more than I already did, would definitely take a course with him again!
Great lectures and very interesting, however he is an extremely hard marker. Expect 2-4 letter grades lower than your usual on papers.
Hands down best English prof at SFU. He taught me how to write an essay and took the time to answer every painful and repetitive question I had. Although I did not receive the best grade in this class, I definitely learned a lot from him!!!
Professor. Everton lectures are very captivating and well thought out He was very clear on what you would be tested on and there were no surprises on the final exam. He is fun and hilarious. However, is grading is difficult but you will see an improvement in your writing by the end of the term. Show up to class and show up to office hours.
Dr. Everton is by far the best professor I have had here at SFU. His lectures always introduced interesting concepts that left you never checking the clock--unless it was in hopes the class would have more time left! The assigned readings were good, too and they were not excessive. Only thing is the grading is tough, but the class is worth it!
His lecture is engaging, hilarious and energetic. He makes creative and colorful slides and speaks at a normal pace so that we can catch up with him. not so tough for 100 level class, there's no essay on final exam. However, grading is hard for essays and criteria are clear.
Best professor I have ever had the pleasure of having in my University career.
Great prof!
You need to take at least 1 class with this person before you die.
HE is the best...
Truly a world-class teacher. Just read all the previous positive reviews on here that can attest to how amazing this guy is. I don't think I will ever have a prof as engaging, inspiring, and articulate as Dr. Everton. Really knows his stuff. Grades aside, you will come out of his class a better individual. He sparks something within you.
Take a class with him before you die.
He is very passionate about this course (horror literature) which made lectures more intriguing. He also gave a lot of advice for writing papers and was really helpful when you needed questions answered. If you needed lessons on grammar, he was willing to have a one-on-one chat with you about it. Overall, I would take a course of his again.
Great professor, but more importantly he's so FINE.
Nice enough guy but a VERY VERY difficult marker. Not really a class for learning HOW to write (structure, clarity, etc) but mostly about analyzing stories. I was told I analyzed well but I wasnt clear enough??? Wont tell you how to improve
Dr. Everton is an amazing prof who engages all of his students with the course material. Although, he marks extremely hard so expect lower marks than what youre used to. He gives great feedback and if you incorporate it into your writing, it will improve drastically over the semester. Be prepared to do ALL the readings and lectures.
You can tell Dr. Everton is a good prof if you are into English. Do not take him if you are not strong in the subject or writing. There are two papers that are graded very hard but he does not focus on how to improve your writing so it is kinda unfair. You have to be good at analyzing stories to succeed in this course.
As a science major, this course was a breath of fresh air. Dr. Everton delivers lectures in such an engaging way that you rarely find yourself bored. This may seem obvious, but you need to be a strong writer to get a good grade. His grading is definitely on the tougher side, but very fair.
Everton is a great professor, he genuinely cares about his students and is very understanding. He is also well respected in the English department and I would recommend everyone in English take at least one course with him. He is a tough marker and makes you work hard, but it really helps improve your writing.
Dr. Everton never had a boring lecture, and always gave you something to really think about. The online course had two big papers, and the final was basically a collection of several smaller essays, so be prepared to write a lot. Both Everton and the TAs are tough markers, but you will learn a lot from them.
Mike is very passionate about what he teaches, keeps his lectures engaging, but doesn't go easy on anyone. He and the TAs are there to help you - even if you're a strong English student, PLEASE talk to them about your assignments. Overall, I learned a lot and really enjoyed being in this class. (Great intro to horror literature/concepts!)
Lectures are great and interesting. Although it was online, he put in effort to make it a little spooky and added his own twists. There are mandatory tutorials which was pretty easy just lots of discussing. Papers were your core marks and they were marked very hard but I'm pretty bad at english papers in general. Get help with it if you need.
Professor Everton's class was awesome. Had to take it online because of COVID, but he has the online and canvas environment under control, and easy to use. My TA was fantastic as well. Highly recommend! But beware, the marking is tough.
Dr. Everton provides a lot of opportunities for students to engage with the content.
I thought Dr. Everton was a pretty decent professor. That being said, my TA was pretty mediocre. Would have loved for more feedback on my assignments.
Such a great proff!!! Loved all his classes. The work load is nice and easy until right before a paper is due. The TAs are very willing to give guidance for papers.
He is now one of my fav profs at SFU. It was my TA who marked my stuff and in my opinion she marked quite hard, and I tried very hard and usually get As. said that they all go through stuff together. Id 100% take another class with Everton. He is funny, cool, concise, articulate, and smart. Take his class if you can but dont expect an easy A.
I loved taking this class with Everton! I don't like English, but he made this class very enjoyable. The content of his lectures was really interesting to me, and his voice was nice to listen to. The only downside is that the TA could really make or break your experience in this course!
Dr. Evertons lectures have been my favourite to attend out of all the classes Ive taken. He is not an easy marker so do not take this for an easy grade, you will most definitely need to heavily edit your papers if you want a good mark. Important subject matter discussed in this class, but deals with a lot of trauma.
This class in particular dealt with heavy topics, and Everton gave them the respect they deserved. I wish he provided clearer criteria for the essays, but he does everything in the interest of his students - he even took the time to prepare us for the final. Take good notes and keep up with the readings. His lectures are always great
Great prof, obviously very passionate about the subject. Thoroughly enjoyed this class, lectures are interesting and entertaining. I found everything on the reading list enjoyable to read. Tough marker on the papers, but highly motivated to help students improve their writing. Learned a lot, would seek out this prof again!
I really recommend Michael's Engl 209 class. The readings he chose were fantastic, and he really cared about what we had to say. He ran my tutorial once, and was an absolute gem at guiding discussions. This class deals with heavy, traumatic content so be prepared. Also talk to him if you're struggling--he's understanding & flexible.
Professor Everton is one of the best professors at SFU. He really takes care and consdieration iinto his students and genuinely wants everyone to succeed. He helped me improve my writing so much and get over the initial anxiety of starting a paper. I enjoyed every minute of his class and would take any class just to have him be my prof again.
Mike Everton is the best English prof around. My first assignment did not do so well, but Everton took the time with me to better my writing. At first, it was frustrating but it was worth the time because he really helped me improve. When you see Everton is teaching a course, you better enroll in it. Trust me!
my fav prof. It would be a crime to go though your undergrad without taking Everton at least once because he is a gift to SFU. He will teach you skills that you can actually apply to your studies while also providing interesting content. He is a tough but fair marker and gives great feedback.
This Professor is one of the best professors I've had in SFU. Before this class, I used to hate horror literature, and now I ENJOY IT!! If you ever need to take an English course, you NEED to take it with him. He's tough on grading, but I learned a LOT from his lectures and the thorough feedbacks. A M A Z I N G CLASS!!!
Michael Everton has been my favourite prof at SFU so far. Really funny, explains all the concepts in great detail with examples, reviews things in case you didn't get them the first time. I really loved going to his lectures. The grading was a little hard but the feedback was great (though I think that's mostly TA-dependant). Great Prof!!!
literally a god among professors, if you have a chance to take one of his classes TAKE. IT.
He's a great prof with engaging and hillarious lectures. There's reading quizzes every week (worth 2.5% of grade) and tutorials are accounted for overall grade. There's only 2 big essays and a final exam for grades which is pretty light. But if you're taking this class thinking it's an easy A, trust me it's not unless you're a writing god.
The best prof ever. His delivery was perfect at lectures as he is extremely expressive and humorous. Difficult class though, literally impossible to get a good mark if you're not already a strong writer
Professor Everton is very kind and smart! He genuinely wants all of his students to succeed. You can go to him with any questions and he will be more than willing to answer them. People complain a lot about him being a harsh marker, but I found his marking to be perfectly fair. The Canvas page was also very organized which was helpful.
Absolutely one of the best professors I have ever had. I do not care what class he is teaching, I'm taking that class.
Great lectures and all essays/tests can be completed easily with basic knowledge of what was said in lectures
Michael Everton is super chill and funny, and he communicates information clearly and effectively. Your TA has more direct influence on your grade than he does. Don't skip his lectures, they provide context on readings that you can't find elsewhere, which means self-study isn't really an option (at least in this course)
By far the best Prof I've ever had. I don't care what subject he's teaching, I'm taking it.
A VERY special professor. Double edged sword though because if you take him, be assured that every other professor you have will pale in comparison.
He's definitely a good professor but if you're looking for a GPA booster, this course isn't it if you're not a strong writer.
I took my first English class (Engl 211) with him and It's fair to say he is an outstanding prof. His lectures provide great insight into the text and prepare you well for his assignments/exams. He cares very deeply about his students. We had a late exam and he waited at the bus stop for every student to safely board the bus.
Probably the best prof at SFU. He cares very deeply at SFU and gives really great feedback if you meet up with him to discuss your exams/essays. His lectures are so entertaining and have so much information so as long as you show up to lectures, you really don't need to study or anything. Don't skip the lectures, they're so worth it.
Everton is an amazing professor who made me fall back in love with English! His assigned readings and lectures are engaging and he genuinely wants everyone to learn and succeed in his class. Tutorials are discussion-based (attendance marked) and useful for understanding the complex novels. Show up and put in the effort and you will do well!
Michael is one of the best professors I have ever had. You can see his passion for English and the material in his lectures, and he hooks you to what he is saying everytime. His humour and caring nature helps you stay engaged and there is not too much work for the course other than readings.
If you ever come across a class taught by Everton, TAKE IT!! You won't regret it! He's a genuinely great guy who cares a LOT about you and your success in class. Most approachable prof I've ever had. A bit of a tough marker on writing, but he will teach you good strategies you can use. His feedback is in depth & helps you with the next assignment!
It would be impossible to take this class and not catch his enthusiasm for Melville and Moby-Dick. Made me and my classmates absolutely fall in love with Melville. Such an excellent teacher.
In my last semester as an English major and feel like every other prof here pales in comparison. He somehow makes Moby Dick interesting. He's also easy on the eyes with a nice voice which makes it easier to show up to class. He likes participation a lot, by the way.
Professor Everton's 111W class is challenging but worth it. His engaging lectures and useful feedback make it a rewarding experience. For study prep, tools like unstuck AI and the free textbook are super helpful.
