Excellent teaching style, terrible resolving student/teacher difficulties.
Good teacher. Made chemistry somewhat interesting.
Took for summer session...made it very difficult to ask questions
Excellent, most take for intro course and non majors
Boring. Half the class never went. HUGE dropout problem. Never stuck to the syllabus and was not an effective lecturer.
Wasnt a very helpful professor. If you take him which you will if your taking chem. Be prepare for a boring letcure and time
I thought he was a very good prof. I think he goes at a little bit of a fast pace, but as long as you aren't borderline retarded you should do just fine. I got over 100%. It is easy to get a good grade in this class.
Overall, difficult course (but it's science, what can you expect)Provides good explanations, as well as lecture notes & practice exams/quizzes.Test questions a bit confusing.Plan on studying, and you'll do fine.
Good teacher, goes a bit fast on some things. Pretty entertaining if you're a dork.
He's a good guy. He's pretty friendly and likes to crack jokes.
did not like the class. got a horrible grade...took the class again with diff teacher, and got a really good grade.
most people never went to lecture.he was easy to understand-better if u took chem in highschool.helps to have a good lab instructor.exams are all multiple choice.picky on a lot of labs.he's a nice guy and approachable.don't fall behind or you're screwed.
Tends to talk too much and then put things on quizzes that don't have much to do with lectures
his exams are fairly difficult, despite being multiple choice. appreciated the practice quizzes for the weekly quiz and review sessions for exams. did not like never having the weekend to work on the homework. great to talk to if you're having trouble with the concepts.
A little difficult at times. His exams are easy but often have little trickeries in them that rushers like me pick :(. The thing i looked forward to the most was his sense of humor. Very witty and funny.
There is a lot of info to comprehend but the weekly quizzes and homework help you keep up with the material. He also provides practice quizzes and exams. Not to mention, he is REALLY approachable. An overall great prof. taking the subject into account.
Hard class, lots of work. His jokes are only funny if you LOVE chemistry and want to laugh about it. Overall, VERY time consuming class, and he is very picky about crazy things.
Chem 105 is a difficult class. Lots of material to take in, exams were just as difficult. Class average on exams ranged in low 60's. Very time consuming until you understand the flow of the class. Labs absolutely NOT fun. Much time was spent on Labs. Good professor though, very approachable.
I thought it was a pretty tough class. His lectures are just a couple examples and very little explanation. Moves through material fast, but talks slow -- makes it very hard to focus in class. Your grade will probably depend a lot on how good your TA is with catching you up with the lessons.
He likes to laugh at his own jokes. i think part of his bad teaching might also be the falt of bad TA's.
Sqrewed over with grades and got all B's on my tests except for one 68. Lab procedures are pointless and take too long. Needs to learn that we are students and not bring the whole class down with his horrible grading. Test medians usually low... does not curve!!!
The class is hard but Dr. Finnegan is very helpful. He has review and homework help sessions that are really helpful in understanding material. I learned a lot from his class.
Professor lectures poorly and often leaves material he's going to test out of the lecture, with the hope the TA's will fill in the gaps. He also refuses to correct poor grading(he'll agree it's unfair, but refuse to give points back). Don't take this prof if your goal is vet or med school.
He did a good job. The TA's can be lacking though.
Dr. Finnegan is a great professor. The class can be difficult, be his homework and tutorial worksheets are very helpful in comprehension. He is very approachable, and his tests are based straight off of the homework and the labs. Overall, very helpful and useful class.
Chem 105-6 are hard classes, but Finnegan is great about answering any questions you have. He expects you to keep up on the reading, so do it. And STUDY for each week's quiz. Exams are as "easy" as chem ever gets, and since you're probably stuck with this prof anyway, don't stress about having him.
Very helpful. But, the tests are tricky. He doesn't curve anything! Can basically fail the exams, do well on quizzes and labs, and pull off a B in the course. Study for the quizzes and study the homeworks for the exam. He teaches in fri lecture what would have helped for the hw due fri before class
Finnegan's exams are horrible. Surprise questions abound. I also think he has a poor crew of TA's that care more about polishing their grad school resume than helping students actually learn the material. Some of their knowledge on the material is questionable at best. Watch out for Finnegan.
He is a good teacher, HW help alot, do it and know it, he puts it on the exams! Sometimes the exams can be tricky but go to the help sessions and ask questions...TA's are SOOOOO helpful, take advantage, they want to help you! Overall, he was a good professor.
He's a nice guy but a horrible teacher. He gives us assignments due on topics that we have not covered yet, expecting us to look it up in the book. News flash - the book is horrible!!! He seems to get a lot of pleasure in trick questions, doesnt make it very clear what kind of stuff he is going to g
He knows his stuff but his examples are a bit vague. His exams are diffucult and some of his quizzes also are. He is the reason a lot of people on my floor changed thier majors. I do not recommend him at all. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Good teacher, usually very clear, but exams are hard! Study a lot, and make sure you know all the details. Go to lecture and you should do okay.
great teacher. Pay attention, show up for class, do your work and you will do FINE! He often does exciting demonstrations in class.
Finnegan does a good job of describing in lecture and he's a very funny and nice guy. His tests, though, are very tricky so be sure to read carefully and study the homeworks well. That's about all you can do unless he throws in some things that weren't covered well... which he does. Just study lots for his tests!

i like chemistry so i guess i don't care who teaches it. seems easy enough though but whatever, i'm just a freshman.
Does a good job.
He's a good teacher, but his TAs don't seem to give a****. I've had him for about two weeks. I like him, but I'm ready to shoot my TA. She just doesn't seem to care.
he is a great teahcer. he has helped me out so much. he has even helped me with some of my material science engineering class stuff. he also knows his**** and explains himself very clearly most all of the time.
so far i like the guy, he seems real nice and he's a good teacher. i dont like my ta one bit though. i agree with the kid that said they are all about polishing there resumes.
awsome class!
probably my favorite teacher at this point in time...Great Man!
he is one of my favorite professors! he really helps his students to undderstand the material that is introduced in the class. for anyone who needs to take chem 101 at wsu, definitely take finnegan's class
Homework was due on Fridays, but we didn't learn some stuff from homework til the friday that it was due. Exams tricky on purpose, and the average grade for the third exam and final was an F. AVOID HIM !

He is a good professor when you are one on one with him, otherwise he can be a bit hard and not very clear. He is very smart and knows what he is talking about. His exams are hard but everything else is pretty easy.
He is a good teacher, coming from a school where my chem teacher sucked. However, my TA is a different story, she is not good at all, really anal and not helpful, she expects us to know everything. Chem would be great if it weren't for my TA and lab.

Goes fairly slowly over the semesters. Tests aren't very easy. Labs were good. Gives like, 2 extra credit the entire year. Good guy, his microphone cuts out a lot. Answers questions and teaches well.

Finnegan is awesome. He is very interesting and dresses up to emphaszie thinkg you need to know
Hard tests, but an okay lecturer. I guess you can't get much better with a chemistry class.
Very confusing. Hard tests.

He is a good teacher and he knows what he is talking about, however his tests are ridiculously difficult. You have long labs and quizzes every week. Homework is due on fridays which no one knows how to complete cause he doesn't teach what is on it tell after we hand the assignment in. I like chemistry but this class sucks!
I wasn't impressed with his teaching skills what so ever. I'm a great student and had to put in many hours in SLIC. I was bored in class and felt that he chose a book that didn't cover a lot of the material covered in class. His teaching skills were meant for someone who has had an extensive chemistry background.
Finnegan explains many concepts more clear then most of the Chemistry teachers. I have taking all Freshman chem (105, 106, and 102) and I feel that he better clarified things in this class then in the other three that I have taken. I recommend taking Chem 101 from him.
Good lecturer. Class is boring though. My TA was outstanding, so it made the class much easier.
Yuck!! I hate chemistry and really didn't like this class. Finnegan clearly lays out chemistry concepts and I got an A in the class, but you need to study and show up to class and ask questions if you don't understand. This class was challenging.
One of the better chemistry teachers at WSU. His lectures refelct the book, and the book becomes a good review tool. He's easy to talk to and get help from. He is easy to understand, but can start talking in circles if he's on one topic for too long. Great Prof. get him if you can!
This class sucks. How can a university get away with providing chem 101 and 102 students with only one professor? Hundreds of students, and ****y TAs. Lectures are boring, the tests are hard, and extra work is very time consuming.
this class blows
I worked my ass off in this class and still got a damn D. He was no help and my TA was absolutly terrible. Any question asked was returned with a question.
Very good professor. Easy to understand, lectures were fairly organized. tests were sometimes tricky but his review sessions were VERY helpful. I would recommend him.
Good teacher and willing to help you if you are willing to put the effort in. I would take him again
Very good lecturer. If you've never taken a chem course before, it'll take some work to keep up, but his lectures are extremely informative and useful. Unfortunately as others have said, a lot of your success in this course rests on the TA you are assigned.
Take notes/Pay attention/do good on the labs. Tests are hard if you don't do the homework and understand it completely.
Hard class, getting a good TA is essential, make sure you switch out of a bad lab while you still can! I got Chris Starr and was lost the entire semester.
An ok teacher. Quizes and Tests are hard though, even with studying. A lot of homework is assigned in this class and there is lots of reading too. He could have spent a bit more time on some of the harder subjects.
class itself is easy, but the exams are so ridiculous, even if you spend hours studying and stay the whole review session for your lab that week, you come to the test and all the questions are rewritten in backwards ways and you get confused very quickly. its a hard class, and the homework system is flawed.
I was nervous to take college chem, but Mr Finnegan made it fun, interesting, and actually quite easy. Attend lecture, do the homework, and study and you WILL get an A. Great lecturer and the material he presents is easy to understand. He really cares about his students and wants them to pass.
He teaches as though we already have a chemistry background, even though this is 101. The exams are very difficult and purposefully confusing. So many people are clearly struggling, but he doesn't bother to slow down or explain more.
He is very very hard to learn from!! He seriously only does examples on the board and talks the entire time you are writing. His tests are all calculations and equations. I had a really hard time learning anything from his teaching. I wouldn't take him. I used to like chemistry but now i do not like it at all!!
Tests and quizes are pretty brutal but homework is generally much easier. Entertaining during lecture sometimes but can be confusing on certain subjects. Most of material on the exams in math related.
The only way you learn ANYTHING in that class is pay attention to the homework and take it seriously. Complete it all.
You really have to teach yourslef in the class. Lecture is jsut a bunch of notes with 1 example. Test are alot harder than anything they give you. Quizzes are given at worst times, cause you can't have anytime to get help. TA's are bad. Do homework and get a tutor!!
Very tough class.... Tons of material to stay in touch with. The work load in uncomparable to any class I've ever taken
suuuuuper hard but he was kinda funny, in a nerdy sad kinda way. butt i reallly did like his tie-dye lab coat :)
He had a good sense of humor and class was usually enjoyable but it was incredibly hard. Test averages were usually in the 60's or 50's, even with hours of studying it was hard to get above a 70. Labs didn't seem to correlate at all with lectures which was frustrating and a waste of time.
He seems to have lost his touch a little, because I heard that he was a great teacher but his test and quizzes are ridiculously hard and he doesn't teach very well. I had a good TA but my grade still wasn't very good!
@ first I heard a ton of bad stuff about him, but being in his class is actually really worth it! I'm not a fan of Chemistry, but his teaching style is very helpful. If you study and do all the homework sets again prior to the exam, you'll get @ least a B on it. Just do all your work and it won't be too hard. I highly recommend him!
I absolutely hated this class. It's tedious, difficult unless you either are a slave to your homework or you're a genius. I've never gotten bad grades but I still ended up failing because of the extremely hard exams and lab quizzes. For a lot of people it's a prereq so there's no escaping it.
Nice guy but hard class. He expects you to automatically know what he is talking about and answers questions like hes talking to another chem prof. his tests are hard. i would recommend going to class every day. i would have failed the class if i didnt drop it. i could never even get a D, but chem isnt really my subject. try to get someone else
A good professor, chemistry isn't a easy subject and most people don't put in the time needed to get the grade they would like. The tests are hard and sometimes a little ridiculous but if you study and do the homework and do fine on labs a B or higher is what u can expect. Overall he's a nice guy who cares about his students.
Great Lecturer, loves Chem and it shows. Class and department disorganized and overwhelmed by volume of students. Read your book and teach yourself. Get a good TA, you will need their help! Seek other TA's if necessary. Take Chem at your smaller CC if possible.
I took Dr. Finnegan for both 105 and 106. I enjoyed all of his lectures and demonstrations. I found his practice quizzes and worksheets really helpful. If you go over BOTH every week and take the time to figure out the problems, you will do fine (I got B's). Work hard in preparation for the exams, but your grade is about more than test scores.
This class is time consuming, but if you put in the study hours you'll get an A. The TA's that grade your lab reports are picky as f*** though so you have to be really thorough. He posts practice sheets for all of his quizzes and tests that are almost identical to the real thing so do those and you will get an A. 90% is the cutoff for an A also.eas
Best Chem prof at WSU
I enjoyed taking chemistry from Finnegan. If you put in the time with online homework and labs the class is not that difficult. The tests are mainly taken from the homework sets and previous years' tests can be viewed so there are really no surprises or tricks on the tests.
He is very sarcastic and brings his personality to his lectures. He does fun demonstrations and explains things as clearly as he can. Do the work however or you will get behind quickly. Be sure to make time for lab write ups and solving problems, but if you practice enough you will get a decent grade. I got an A- so it proves if you make time you c
He is very helpful, he does a good job explaining topics with examples in lecture. He keeps the lectures interesting. The grade is out of 1000 pts and composed of 3 midterms (100 pts. each) 1 final (200 pts) lab grades, best of 10 quizes (each 20 pts)And 100 pts of homework
Dr. Finnegan definitely knows his chemistry, and it's obvious that he wants to help his students to succeed. He provides practice exams (all muctiple choice) and usually curves at the end of the semester.
Explanations are very clear and unambiguous. His demonstrations are very exciting, and help students understand concepts further. The grade is composed of 4 exams, quizzes, lab reports, and homework, so it's well balanced. He drops 2 of your lowest scores as well. Funny guy too. Awesome prof!
He is an amazing professor that I highly reccomend. He has a real passion for what he is teaching. He uses the same corny jokes every semester but his demonstrations are pretty cool. Go to class because thats where you get your grade.
Dr. Finnegan was a great teacher! Fortunately for me, he's also going to be teaching 105 for spring semester! He's extremely helpful if you go to see him, his TA's not so much.
He knows what he's talking abotu and is very helpful if you have questions. His manner is very easy going so it's easy to pay attention to his lectures. all the lecture notes are highly helpful so I would recommend going to lectures, definitely.
I'm usually terrible at math and science, but this teacher did a fantastic job teaching. He knows what he's talking about and does an amazing job keep a class of 320 students interested. I'll never forget the time when he blew up a pumpkin in class during Halloween and flames poured out of the mouth and eyes of a jackolantern!
He is a very good teacher he explains everything well. Just read the text book chapters before lectures and do the work and you will probably get an A.
Professor Finnegan is a GREAT teacher. He's friendly, he always makes time for you if you can't get to a TA, and his lectures are clear and to the point. I like that he has an hour tutorial class before the 3 hour lab class because we have the chance to take the quiz outside of class time
Mr.Finnegan is a great teacher! Lectures are easy to understand and he actually talks about the material in the book as you are reading it (or suppose to be reading it). I worked hard and got an A I also got an A on the final. I love this class and this guy is a great professor!
Professor Finnegan is a terrific lecturer. He covers the material clearly and simplifies concepts so you can understand them better.
So I took Chem 101 and 105 with him. I failed my high school chem class cuz the teacher sucked, but passed both courses with an A. He's an amazing teacher, extremely easy to understand. however, doesn't curve grades and the tests are extremely hard. the weekly quizzes however, are easy. DO YOUR HOMEWORK(:
At the middle of the semester, he literally stops explaining how to do stuff. He expects you to know stuff that "is" in the book, but is no where to be found. Everything in here is complete busy work. BUT do all the past exams before tests, they help. I used my text maybe once, don't buy it. Labs are more busy work but are necessary to go to.
This teacher made certain topics very confusing.
Dr. Finnegan was very interesting to listen to. He is very challenging but all the work makes you understand everything in preparation for the exams. The labs and online homework is time consuming but easy to do well in if you take your time. Study the practice exams because they are the same questions just different numbers.
He doesnt exlain anything
Dr. Finnegan is really knowledgeable and passionate about chem. However he doesn't always explain the stuff that he automatically understands, or he will tell you to "look it up". If you tend to understand math classes without explanations of "why" then he is your teacher. Our class averages for exams were always below 63% and he doesnt curve.
Finnegan is hard to understand if you're on your phone or facebook in class. He expects you to do the readings, but understands that people usually don't. He explains everything pretty well, you just have to listen and take notes. He teaches a lot by using examples. All you have to do is pay attention! And he does curve.
Professor Finnegan is a great professor, really knows his chemistry. He teaches as clear and as simply as he can, but you should have some basic chemistry knowledge. He can be pretty funny, and does cool experiments in class. Lab reports due every week, four tests, 11 quizzes, he drops three quizzes. Curves the final. Easy to get an A in homework.
Finnegan does know his Chemistry, but he is not helpful AT ALL. He never emailed back so if you wanted to talk to him you needed to go to his office hours. The entire average of quizzes and tests were failing. When TA's told him he didnt care and didnt make anything easier or explain anything better. He just assumes you already know the material.
Who is Dr. Finaagan? First, he is good at explaining and solving problems. However, he expects you to have a solid background. Second, his exams are tricky and hard, especially, the second one. Third, He speaks too fast so if you are an international student,it'll difficult understand the materiel. Finally, homework are hard to solve.
finnegan was a horrible professor. he knows a lot about chem, but he does not relate to his students. if u ask him a question, he laughs at you and makes you feel dumb. his lectures are pointless as he will just spend all class doing practice problems but doesnt teach you why. He seems to enjoy weeding out students, b/c he is 50 and not married.
Pretty straight forward class. Attend the lecture and take notes, and you won't have to read the textbook that much. I think he does a pretty good job explaining things, and does lots of practice problems. As long as you put effort in, you should be just fine.
He is a great teacher who explains things clearly. Every chemistry class will be difficult but I feel that he definitely makes learning easy. Tests are really hard though.
This class and teacher get a bad rep but if you actually go to lecture and pay attention you will do well. Finnegan gives lots of extra credit and if you do the mastering chemistry assignments and actually try to understand them you will be fine for tests. I did horrible in my high school chem class but Finnegan made this course bearable.
Finnegan is a very intelligent and knowledgeable guy. He teaches main concepts, but does not really dive into the specifics. I have a D+ grade in this class and I put upwards of 60 hours of studying just for the tests. Expect to work 8 hours a week on hw too(A in hw). I had a horrible TA so hopefully I get a big curve. This class SUCKS.
Finnegan has a great way of explaining chemistry. This is my least favorite subject but going to lecture helps you understand a ton more. Work hard and you won't fail.
I was nervous about this class as I did horrible in high school. I went to EVERY lecture. I payed attention. Did the homework...took every practice quiz, exam, review and tutorial sheet that he provided. He did a fantastic job of teaching and was super helpful when I had questions. I ended with a very high A and now enjoy chemistry.
Ahhhh! Never took a chem class in my life but somehow I pulled out an A! This class goes by really fast so I recommend doing all the homework (even reading the book if you need to) and doing the practice quizzes/tests. The tests are actually really easy and he offers lots of extra credit! Also if you don't like your TA, switch ASAP.
He knows his stuff and can explain it really well. Reading the book is a must in this class and starting the homework the day it's due is a terrible idea. You really should focus on understanding the homework and even do questions in the back of the chapters (the reason I passed the tests). don't try to talk to him in peraon. he will make you cry.
By far my favorite prof at WSU. I never took a chem class before here and took all my gen chems with Finnegan and absolutely fell in love with chemistry. He knows his stuff, has clear explanations and does write fair exams and quizzes. Labs can be a little ridiculous but he always normalizes them so class average is like 85ish
He is great. My favorite chemistry teacher I have had.
This class is HARD, the tests are worse! If you aren't prepared to do at least 10 hours of studying a week plus homework, then you are not ready for this class. If you get a bad TA as well, DROP the class!
Out of all the professors that teach 105 during fall and spring semesters he is the best. He is helpful and easy to understand during lecture. Print out his lecture notes before class and work out the problems along with him during lecture. read the textbook do all your smart works. In General this is a VERY hard class regardless of who you take.
He was a good teacher and did the best he could to teach this class. He expects you to read your textbook and come to class everyday. I made the mistake of never reading the book. So if you want to do great on tests, read the book as well as keep up on everything else because the tests are very tricky.
Study hard & read the text chapters if you really want to excel. Finnegan will make sense if you read or have prior knowledge of the topic but don't skip lectures, especially Friday. Hit or miss with TA's. My old TA gave me all -50% on my lab reports but my new TA gives me +80% even though I turned in my exact same old work.
Dr. Micheal Finnegan is an easy going professor. He has office hours in which he is willing to answer any questions you have.
Realistically, the grades I've given him aren't indicative of how he really is! Like any class, you can do well IF YOU CHOOSE TO. It's really important to know that. Finnegan is a great teacher, and he'll be there for you if you need the help.
Hated chem in high school, coming to WSU I was dreading it but Finnegan makes it so easy to understand. He makes things interesting, definitely my favorite class this semester! As long as you go to class majority of the time and pay attentiontake notes you should be fine.
great teacher, easy class if you go to class
Finnegan is too smart to be teaching chem 101, no doubt about that. He just expects you to know everything, doesn't really explain... tells you what to study, but makes the test 100 times harder. Don't take him unless you already understand chemistry. Also, he doesn't curve and he brings your lab grade down if it's higher than your tests.
Finnegan's tests are easier than other chem profs. He also provides lots of extra study material and makes it clear exactly what is going to be on quizzes.
His lecture begins ontime and exactly covers the curriculum for each day. He knows which part on basic chemistry student might feel difficultly. He might have worked with many of professional students and faculties, but always gives a care those who're taking chemistry for the first time.
If you have interest in reading and learn chemistry, if you're willing to do your given work for the class, you'll have full of chances to pass 101. His lecture is almost always distracted by those who leave the room early. Sometimes I want him to restrict them by a class policy. Guys, please be more respectful.
He bases his lectures off of the book but is so unclear about what he means half the time. He picks analogies that a lot of people don't seem to understand but is helpful in office hours (if you can find him). Test are tough, your best luck is to get a good TA (Michelle L.) or to live at fulmer 319 for tutoring if you don't understand something.
This class is extremely hard if you've never taken a Chemistry class. He says your grade can be saved by your lab scores but this isn't true. Even WSU advisors tell you to take it some where else because it's to hard here..... Maybe there's something wrong with the class then? YES!
There's no doubt that Finnegan knows his stuff, he is clear and informative while lecturing, and I was never confused by his syllabus. However, he is a 'Richard Cranium'. He's condescending and more than occasionally rude. When students asks questions he blatantly laughs at them instead of taking the time to respectively explain the answer.
The guy deserves more credit. He's actually a really good professor. Most people who fail his class either have horrible test anxiety or skip class or don't understand English very well. The material is not hard. His test definitely test conceptual understanding of material (on a semi-difficult level too). You will need to work hard to do well.
He doesn't explain himself very well in lecture. He expects you to know the material before lecture so he doesn't go in depth over the material. He tests are hard so study harder. Good luck finding him for office hours.
I didn't even know what the periodic table is when the course first began, and then I was solving more than a half of questions on the final exam without random picking. You might know about basic chemistry a lot more than I do. Then go do it with him, Read the text book, surely you'll be thanking to him.
Finnegan by far is the best chemistry professor I have had. I had no prior knowledge in chemistry, but Finnegan did a great job describing everything in lecture. His lecture was like the book so if you were confused about something, it was nice to use the book. Just as long as you study, go to lecture, and put in the effort, it is an easy class.
Very hard class. I dropped right before Thanksgiving break and plan to take it again next semester. Even with tutoring it was hard for me to keep up. My problem was I had a bad TA, something I learned is very important for success in this class.
READ THE OLD EXAMS!!!! I love this professor. He is really great at explaining details and questions in class. I got 100% on the Final for 105 by just focusing on the old exams.
Professor Finnegan has been my chemistry teacher at WSU for 3 consecutive classes. He's a good lecturer, and writes the notes on overhead (he has pretty decent handwriting). He's extremely helpful if you ask. He's very passionate about chemistry.
Study as you go along, study every lecture when you get home that night, and read the book. Never skip on the online assignments due 2am before every lecture either.
Class was super hard as were the tests. I regularly read the book and still struggled in class. Professor is very nice and seemed to know a lot about the subject but didn't communicate it well on a basic level to understand. Probably going to have to retake the class. Good luck.
Finnegan is awesome. This class is actually really easy if you attend lecture and do all of the outside homework. Would definitely take him again.
For a chemistry class, he made it interesting. He would do demonstrations in class and make it fun. Also much easier than I expected but you have to work for your grade. If you work hard you'll do good.
He had hard time dulling things down for people to understand. He
Gives a lot of reading assignments that are completed through Mastering Chemistry but the program is lenient on grading so makes all the extra assignments a nice grade booster. Be prepared for 4-5 long chemistry assignments per week and many hours studying.
Dr. Finnegan assumes everyone has the same chemistry knowledge he does, however he is still helpful if you seek the help. His tests are really hard but he also throws in some extra points here and there. I would also recommend using the TAs in fulmer for help.
He is a very nice guy and respects all students comments and his lectures go into depth of the topic and he gives great examples. best of all he gives very good test review sessions that are highly recommended to go to.
The homework scoring is set up to make you fail. Takes point away for things you have not learned yet. Overall very frustrating experience
I loved Finnegan's lectures he brings them to life. He made me really interested in chem and I'm even thinking about majoring in it now. I'm definitely going to try to get into his lecture for next year. Really straight up, to the point, easy to understand. Makes the class room feel like a one on one conversation without 400 other students around.
For a 101 class, it'll be assumed that you have a firm base of chemistry from perhaps highschool. Too bad if that's not your background. He is terrible at teaching the in-between of everything. I've learned more from YouTube which was 100x more efficient. Tons of busy work, so much that you do assignments pre lecture that actually dock points. RUN!
He is a wonderful professor. He does experiments in class, and always makes sure the atmosphere is lighthearted. The class is tough, and he is a tough grader, but if you pay attention, you can get a good grade.
Absolutely wouldn't recommend this professor. Lecture is extremely boring and he isn't very helpful when it comes to understanding course material. Exam questions are meant to trick students so study your butt off. Class attendance is really important because there's participation points every class.
Finnegan is an okay teacher. He did a good job in lecture, yet he isn't very friendly or nice in my opinion. I would not want to talk to him in office hours, but he got me through General Chemistry with a B. Lots of homework and the labs are NOT easy.
Do as much of the in lecture assignments, the Reading Checks and the Mastering Chem Assignments ( all of which are online) as you can because after a certain amount the rest is extra credit. I failed almost every midterm but i passed with a B- because of the online assignments ! Also, study hard for the final it is practically your final grade
Very condescending to his students when they do not understand. His curriculum consists of having you read the textbook (which is either too confusing to understand or does not have the information needed), then do the graded homework, then teach about it (as in puts up the info with no explanation), then more homework.
Finnegan is the bomb. He is really good at explaining the material and he's just a good person. He forgets to breath a lot which is really funny and he makes strange noises which I enjoy. He drops a ton of stuff at the end so your grade will go up a lot. You have to study, do homework, and actually understand the material to get a good grade.
The best chem professor, has great explanations on his lecture notes, & very enthusiastic about chemistry. RAs are due every other day and HW due every Monday on Mastering Chemistry, but they're easy points. As long as you get average scores on exams, do well on all the HW, and not skip, then you'll pass. Heads up, the final is difficult.
Overall, he explained material well, some things better than others. Must show up to class to get learning catalyst credit. Gave helpful review worksheets and practice test and sometimes review sessions. Not the most approachable professor but he does a good job.
I took 106 in summer session, pretty hard, exams are all hand written no multiple choice and there's 2 post labs a week, I love Dr. Finn as a professor, he is sarcastic/enthusiastic and he is good at explaining material in various ways. Advice: find the best lab T/A and take their lab section. You earn the grade.
Summer session: tests all free response must show work/reasoning, Dr. Finn is very good at explaining material. Also funny/sarcastic. DO ALL HOMEWORK! finding the best TA is also essential for lab it makes a difference. You earn your grade and you earn his respect, no freebies here.
He casually disrespects people regularly and then smiles at them. It's very strange. It seems like he knows his stuff, but be careful how you approach him because he is a very touchy individual.
Had Dr. Finnegan for Chem 105 Spring of 2017. Unfortunately, yes, he comes off as condescending, but I'm not convinced it's intentional. He could just be enthusiastic and that just happens to be his sense of humor. Content-wise, the man knows his stuff very well. I do however recommend that he changes his pedagogical approach slightly.
Not that great of a professor. Wont ever take him again
The worst chemistry professor, sure he knows his stuff but is incredibly condescending. Uses a dirty overhead that is difficult to see and its unreasonable to believe 300 student find a seat to see his scratch. The class is unecessarily difficult, youtube teaches in 10 min what it takes him whole lecture with more clarity. Worst.
He definitely knows what he's doing but he's not exactly the most approachable person. He thoroughly explains everything. Unfortunately, sometimes he explains how do do things after he asks you online questions which count for part of your grade, so you don't get those points unless you already know how to do it.
I should not have had this much difficultly in a 101 chemistry class, but the professor made it almost impossible to be successful. He is belittling, degrading, rude, and a terrible teacher! He teaches straight from the book, so it feels like a waste of time coming to class. He gets annoyed when people ask questions. Would not recommend.
Do not take this professor if you have no past knowledge of chemistry. I can't even begin to count the amount of times I have broke down crying Monday at 8pm due to the excessive amount of homework due. If you want to pass his class, study his old tests. If you want to feel like your worthless and can't do anything in your life, take this class.
For a CHEM 101 class, this class is challenging. I have not taken CHEM since high school. A lot of my friends who have taken series of chem, have told me that majority of what I'm learning in 101 is actually organic chemistry. He is also a mess in how he teaches lectures and expects you to just "get it". HW every other day too.
Very condescending to his students when they do not understand the material. His curriculum consists of having you read the textbook (which is either too confusing to understand or does not have the information needed), then do the graded homework, then teach about it (as in puts up the info with no explanation), then more homework.
I do not recommend enrolling in his Chem 101 course. He relies so much on the textbook which doesn't clearly explain the topics that he is supposed to be teaching in class. Honestly the worst science teacher I've had. He is also not approachable, when asking questions he makes you feel like an idiot. Don't take his class.
attendance is not mandatory but if you don't go and don't do the online in class assignments then you won't pass. something is due everyday except Friday and Saturday. The good thing is that the class is only on points so as long as you get the points and do okay on the tests you'll pass
Went to lecture everyday, did the homework and readings and still didnt pass. When he lectures he acts like hes bored of teaching the material because he starts teaching you material you dont even need to know for 101. Tests on things hes gone over once. Only thing I learned in this class was from what the TA taught me
The first test is relatively easy, but after that it all goes downhill. His lectures arent very clear, and so often the only help comes from TAs. There are a lot of in class questions via Leanring Catalytics that sometimes take up the majority of the lecture.
The online homework is impossible to understand because he makes you do it before you are actually taught the content. In the beginning lectures made sense but as we got to more difficult ideas, I had no idea what was going on. He also expects us to know ideas that he hasn't taught. Even my TA said it shouldnt be as hard as it is.
Great teacher! Makes you laugh! Find the best TA and you'll have no problems. read the book to do the RA's!!
BEWARE FIRST TIME CHEMISTRY STUDENTS: In my opinion, he teaches topics in an advanced way that may make sense to him and higher level chemistry students without thinking about the average student's comprehension. If you miss a lot of class and/or don't pay attention in lecture and read the book, you will most likely have a rough time in the course.
Class consists of lots of online homework and lab work that's not too difficult but takes lots time to do. Exams are pretty challenging and there is not a lot of extra credit to help balance out the grade. Professor is not super engaging and lecture does not always help out with exams.
Finnegan is on probation for the second time this year. He's an okay professor, who gets the lectures and job done! Go to class because there are a lot of points given for Learning Catalytic's. What isn't great about him is that he expects you to know a topic even when he briefly spoke about it after a couple of slides... makes no sense.
Had quite a bit of HW, make sure you do it all because it comes out to about 100 extra credit points between the HW and In Lecture Assignment. Get ready to take lots of not
You can easily be intimidated by him at first, but once you embrace his quirks and his matter-of-fact teaching, it can be a pretty entertaining class. Hes actually very kind when you talk to him in his office hours. Not a lot of things were explained well however, and if it werent for tutoring, I wouldnt have done well.
Dr. Finnegan does his job just fine but his lectures can get boring. Get ready to pay attention and really focus otherwise you'll get lost. You also have to keep up with all the hw quizzes and learning catalytics. He tends to come off as condescending so don't take it personally.
Horrible professor. Does not have any respect for his students or his TAs. If you can, take Chem from another professor at WSU.
Finnegan is a really smart guy and clearly knows what he's teaching about. His tests are extremely similar to his old tests (which are posted online). There is also opportunities on all of his tests to get extra credit. You need to pay attention in class but it's a chemistry class so that should be expected.
terrible class. lectures are boring but count as points toward a grade tests are hard
Horrible class, no care is put into the lectures, do not recommend.
Great class and great professor. Really funny and easy going. explains chemistry very well and the demonstrations are great!
I really liked him as a professor and when I changed my major, I chose him again. He is one of those teachers that you either understand completely or you don't learn anything at all. He is a very nice guy and curves you grade a lot if he sees that you go to lectures and do the homework.
Not really clearest in lectures, and the whole set up of the basic chem classes is actually awful. But the way he grades makes it super easy to get an A, even if you fail every test.
Was a 3.85 student. Took this class and didnt pass any exam after the first one, including the final. You can tell that he doesnt put much effort into lecture. Towards the end of the semester he knew the class wasnt doing well but didnt adjust the course to fit the needs of the students. He curved my grade by about a letter in a half.
I came into the class knowing it was going to be challenging but I was ready to work hard and study for it. I am a computer science major had a good GPA. This professor was mean and his exams were not passable at all. I failed all his exams even after studying as hard as I did I gave all my effort. I had to teach myself everything. DONT TAKE HIM!!
I don't understand why people are hating on Finnegan so much. He provides old exams for you to study from along with an additional study guide, records all his lectures, and provides A LOT of extra credit, which is enough to raise your grade one or two letters. In my experience, Finnegan is probably one of the better chem 105 professors!
Excellent lecturer. One of the best at WSU in my opinion. The multiple choice tests aren't particularly ideal as I always prefer short answer because of the opportunity for partial credit. Show up to class, do the homework, do the practice exams, and this class is a cakewalk.
I enjoyed his lectures and demonstrations. He is a reasonable professor and will offer extra credit. Participation is part of your grade so be prepared to attend the lectures. For exams he offers old exams to study from and every exam is multiple choice.
My biggest issue with Dr. Finnegan is the lack of partial credit awarded on his tests. Especially considering the penultimate and final exams were administered online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the grades received by me and my classmates were an inaccurate reflection of our actual knowledge of the course material.
Finnegan is such a great professor, compared to Nishida and Lee. I had taken Chem105 last semester and got a D+. I obviously retook this class and passed with an A!!!! He really cares about his students.
He explains things well but doesn't post the required lectures until the night before the next days class (that is graded based on the info from the lecture).
Very lecture heavy, you need to watch all of the pre-lectures. His deadlines are FINAL. It won't matter if you joined late or your parent died, there are no make-ups. This class has SO MUCH WORK. Pre-lectures, in-zoom assignments, pre-lab, lab, post-lab, quizzes, tutorial, and 3 HW sets a week. If you put in work, his lectures r easy to understand.
Doc Finn is pretty dope most of the time. The reason why he gets a lot of hate is he doesn't give a lot of leeway for deadlines or dumb question, which is hard for freshmen and the like. Regardless, there is a lot of work. He's funny, but the lectures are so long, the labs are weird, the homework is testy, and overall it just gets kind of a lot.
The way he grades makes it easy to get a passing grade, and he includes extra credit. Practice quizzes are really close to what will actually be on the quiz. Doing all assignments gives you a lot of points plus possible extra credit. Get help immediately if youre stuck or confused through TAs or his office hours or else youll fall behind.
Has a lot of room for missed assignments so even if you do bad on exams or miss a lot of homework you can still pass
I really liked this class. He was one of the best professors I have had. He did get frustrated when students would ask questions that were covered in the syllabus or pre-lectures. You definitely need to watch the pre-lectures if you want a good grade, they are in depth and easy to understand. Overall, very good professor.
Get ready to teach yourself chemistry. He doesn't explain the concepts and processes well enough before going into practice problems in pre-lectures. He also doesn't offer much assistance on how to actually solve problems in class. Is often very rude to students about reasonable questions. You can miss a lot of points and still get an A though.
You defiantly have to be on point! He gets frustrated when you ask him question that were answered in the syllabus or the pre-recorded lectures. You also have to do a lot of reading for his class. I encourage you to read a few pages of the chapter/topic that is going to be covered before class so you are prepared.
material isn't too hard, & homework is minimal but no help at all. Be prepared to spend a LOT of out of class time, only thing in lecture are 3-4 clicker Qs, NO teaching or interaction. sometimes had 0% of the 300+ person class get Qs correct.. not sure what that says, but def something. YouTube is the only reason why I'm passing. avoid Finnegan
This class will take up around 20 hours plus a week from homework to lab assignments to reading. Finnegan expects you to learn all on your own. he only records lectures, actual lecture time is quiz questions that he doesn't even explain better in class. If you can take chem with someone else, do it, especially if they will actually teach you.
Chem in general is really hard but Finnegan is one of the better professors I've had. He assigns a lot of homework and there are lecture quizzes every day but they're somewhat easy points and he offers a lot of extra credit. He also grades on a cumulative points system so it's a lot easier to get a passing grade than other professors.
finnegan doesnt use lecture time to lecture. instead he records pre-lectures to be watched ahead of time but you still have to either be in lecture or be online durning class time to answer iclicker questions. this layout does not make sense and does not work for most students. he also does not respond to emails promptly
Doesn't actually lecture during lecture time. Instead, you do learning catalytics whole class time. If you get the in class assignments wrong it will effect your grade. Posts pre-lectures you are supposed to watch before class but posts them the evening before class. Makes you feel like you already should know everything before have taken the class
He never lectures during class time and expects you to watch pre-lectures the night before and take notes which the videos can range from 20-50 minutes long. You do learning catalytic the whole class period and if you get a question wrong it counts against your grade. Prepare to teach yourself most things.
Just watch the pre-lectures the night before class, and take notes along with his slides, use those notes in lecture for learning catalytics and you'll be fine. I never read the book and I have an A-. Sit in the front and make friends with the others who listen so you can bounce answers off one another! He will interact with you if you do so! :)
rough.
He was a little short with people who clearly did not try in the class, but other than that he knew the material and was easy to understand in the pre-lectures.
Worst professor I've ever had in my two years at WSU. He's a jerk who will outright mock you for asking questions in class. He doesn't teach the lectures in class but rather makes you watch pre-recorded lectures and then do in class questions during actual lecture time. He's so rude and takes pleasure in making fun of you.
Worst professor I've ever had. He was not approachable at all if you needed help, and he made us watch prelectures online and did online questions during the actual class time. The concepts are not easy either and he definitely doesn't make it easier to learn them. This class ruined my entire semester, it was awful. Absolutely avoid it if you can.
Great professor helpful outside office hours. Does love helping students might be a big class but I wouldn't be afraid to meet him and get his help. Best chemistry professor I have taken!
Class was really hard but there was a lot of extra credit if you did everything that is assigned to you.
I know a lot of people don't like Dr. Finnegan but in reality, the class is very challenging and most people get super frustrated with that. Finnegan is super sweet and truly cares about students. I highly recommend going to office hrs to get to know him better.
The reason people may not like Dr Finnegan is due to the difficulty of this class. Chem106 is very challenging but Dr Finnegan is very accessible outside of class and is always at the chem tutoring center. If you go to his office hours and really engage with him, he's a very kind professor. Though, was not a fan of this pre-lectures.
Get ready to waste your time watching his long pre lectures. Its nice to go at your own speed but at the same time its not very helpful since he wont go over answers during LC. Also lecture points are like a quarter of your grade so you gotta just suck it up and go to class
This class has one of the most checked out professors I have ever met. He does not teach in person, instead resorting to recorded lectures before EVERY class (some of which are an hour long). However, your are in luck if you wanted to teach yourself chemistry! The labs take the entire 4 hours and half of the review packet answers are wrong!
Not only is this class extremely hard but he formatted the class horribly. You learn all material before class in long pre-lecture videos. All we did during class was learning catalytics and lots of the time only few would get questions correct and then wouldn't go over them. Not to mention so much aleks. Goodluck teaching yourself
Finnegan is a really bad teacher. He is very smart but said multiple times "why do you not understand that" or "why would you answer that". He makes you feel stupid and the homework platform is completely irrelevant to materials learned in class. He is also a very hard grader and the majority of the class failed. Avoid this prof at all costs.
He doesn't teach during his lectures and has a very poor attitude when asked questions and gives rude remarks. His emails are very passive aggressive.
hardest class ever. so test rescheduling even if you are deathly ill. no one passes.
quirky little things in the last 3 weeks - not shown up to class - no updates about materials on the exam or when he will be back - TAs aren't updated - textbook gave us a value he didn't like so we got problems wrong on homework - not uploaded the same amount of study materials (the week we need it most) - no review session (unlike past 2 exams)
Finnegan has left us high and dry, he has not been present in lectures for the past 4 weeks. Life happens, I get that, but then he proceeded to give us next to no exam prep for exam 3 and made exam 3 incredibly more complex than anything from the textbook or assignments. This is coming from a person who read every assigned textbook reading.
You will have to watch the prelecture every time. It is said to be optional, but the best way to do it is skip the readings, watch the prelecture then do the homework. There is usually about 5 questions of homework before each class and while in class you will have In Class Points worth 8 points a day that add up.
Prepare to watch a 45 minute pre lecture before every monday, wednesday, and friday, because that is absolutely the only thing you will learn from in this class. The tests had extra credit points on them but the averages were always below failing. He is a caring guy, but it's a huge class and you can't hear him in the annex.
When 2/3 of the students drop the class during the term, it says a lot.
He's not really good at teaching. He kind of expects us to know the subject right away.
Useless. Quizes are stupid and is not really any reflection. Dont take his class period.
If I could give him a 0, I 100% would.I have always excelled in my classes getting nothing less than a B+. This professor, however, teaches horribly. He has likely been teaching the same way since the beginning of time with no knowledge of how students need to learn nowadays. I've never had a worse teacher in my life. Don't get me started on the TA.
He is a nice little old man, but he is not the best professor. He explains things vaguely as if we should already know it making it hard to actually learn anything. The exams suck, we have to memorize and learn so much especially for a 101 class. I wish he had a better teaching style because it seems he has been teaching the same way for years.
Finnegan is nice but not an amazing professor. He assigns in lecture assignments immediately after teaching a new topic and will make fun of you for not knowing what you are doing if you answer a question wrong. He talks down to students often. I recommend studying weekly to keep up on all topics and memorize material. It gets to be a lot!
Nope.
-he does not do a good job of explaining and will get mad if you ask questions.
I have never gotten below an A in any class. I got high scores on all assignments except the exams which had around a 35% pass rate. He would essentially bully the class for getting answers wrong on in class assignments and provided almost no productive feedback.
It felt like he didn't really teach. He just tried to get through his notes each lecture and hoped we understood. He's also not great at emailing back and feels like he doesn't quite know what he's doing.
doesn't lecture very much, mostly just solves problems from his lecture notes while students (may or may not) follow along; he might ask if we got the same answer at the end. There are in-class points gained by answering problems correctly through Pearson's Learning Catalytics (costs money). notes are posted only before the lecture.
barely lectures, silently solves problems on lecture notes expecting students to follow along, asks if we got the same answer as him. In-class participation points given through pearson's learning catalytics based on lecture topic (costs money).
Finished with an A but it took at least 10 years off my life. The class is far too hard being a 101 class. The TAs are unequipped and Finnegan is far too old to be teaching. Get ready for this class to be your biggest time commitment and expect for the learning catalytics points to save your grade.
Do. Not. Take. Finnegan. He does not want his students to succeed, exam averages are consistently below %50, he never curves and gets angry when asked about it. The syllabus is unclear and inaccurate and he gives no extra credit. I recommend waiting for the alternative professor or taking GenChem two at a community college instead of with him.
One of the worst chemistry professors I have ever had. Teaching style was horrible. Rude responding to questions, incredibly unclear syllabus. Exam score averages were also consistently below 50%'s on all exams. Avoid this professor at all costs. Also happens to be an alcoholic and unmarried which might contribute to his bitterness.
He doesn't know what he is talking about most of the time. His exams are difficult to pass as well, his class average on all of them was below 50% and he doesn't curve. Overall bad at teaching and this is a hard topic to understand, switch to a different professor if you get Michael.
Do anything you can to not have finnegan.
Prof. Finnegan has an old-school teaching style that can be tough to get used to. Stick with it, use the free textbook, and try unstuckstudy ai for extra study help - that combo worked for me and I ended up with a solid B.
A lot of people hate on Dr. Finnegan but I love his class. His lectures are engaging and if you look over the notes beforehand, the lecture will be so much easier to follow. He gives extra credit if you answer his online questions while in class, and attendance to his lectures isn't mandatory. So far his exams haven't been too difficult.
I cant use swear words but I really wish I could. This guy is incomprehensible during lectures and has messy handwriting so I cant even read what he says sometimes. Also, the exams are alright BUT he makes it so hard to understand the concepts, often going over a broad topic every class (3 lectures a week). Also he mumbles a lot so like????
He is very hard to understand in the mic. His hand writing is near impossible to read. He only talks and doesn't really show his work, which make it hard to follow along. His tests don't line up with the study guide.
You NEED to read the textbook BEFORE the lecture, and use the practice problems!!!!! The study guides/practice exams are identical to the tests, so just do those 5 or 6 times before the test and you'll be good. He's a nice guy, but be prepared to teach yourself. An A is more than doable if you are proactive about learning material yourself.
I like chemistry, but I did not like his teaching style. The TAs taught me more than Finnegan.
Nobody likes Professor Finnegan but I think he's awesome. He has an old-school way of teaching, but he knows so much about chemistry and teaches it very well. His exams are difficult but you'll get through them, and he gives extra credit points out almost every lecture since attendance isn't mandatory. DO THE HOMEWORK and you'll do well in his clas
This was a very difficult course, I did not enjoy his teaching style. His handwriting is also really bad so sometimes you can't even understand what he is writing down. However, as long as you study the material and use the exam review provides you will do fine on the exams.
This class wasn't terrible, but I wouldn't take it with this professor again. It felt like we were expected to already know the material even if you have never seen it before. He mostly just wrote notes to copy - little explanation. Class attendance isn't mandatory, but there are in-class phone prompts. Lab is mandatory. Study hard for exams!
Not at all entertaining and shows no interest in teaching not very good at teaching just says what he's doing but not why or how to do it so you never learn when your supposed to use certain skills.
I think the biggest thing about Finnegan is that his teaching style is definitely up to personal interpretation. If you like more casual, longer, tangent-y conversation in lectures, you'll probably like him more than if you don't. I did feel the lectures do this a little too much & the utility of these lectures suffered. Overall, cool professor.
I personally liked Dr. Finnegan, although he just writes examples down during lectures I am the type of learner that can learn well from that and overall he is a chill teacher. He does offer extra credit which can boost your grade if you just attend lectures and do his iclickers. I am not smart, but I will be passing his class with a good grade.
Prof. Finnegan is decent, though lectures can be a bit dry. He offers lots of extra credit, especially through in-class clickers—so attend! I skipped too many lectures and it hurt my grade. Do all assignments, even ones with deductions, to earn max points. Solid class if you keep up.
Dr Finnegan rarely even engages in lecture, his lectures mostly are just him working out iClicker problems. Your expected to mostly teach yourself and practice in lecture.
Takes pride in creating an inflexible and difficult learning environment for students. He's rude, lacks empathy, and has incompetent TA's. If your priorities lie elsewhere in your academic schedule, he has made this base-level class near impossible to succeed in for those who do not have a major that revolves around natural and chemical sciences.
I am used to teaching myself so having Dr. Finnegan was not a problem for me. He offers a decent amount of extra credit for attending lectures and participating in his iclickers. His review worksheets and practice exams are what you 100% expect to see on the exams. I know a lot of people don't like him, but I think they just expect chem to be easy.
A lot of people don't like Finnegan, but he is a good professor. I am not good at chem so I spent a lot of time practicing and reviewing problems. The exams weren't too bad, he has extra questions so you could potentially earn extra credit. His iclickers and lectures are also extra credit. He is a chill teacher, you just have to do the work :)
I loved both chem 101 and 105 with Dr Finnegan. Aced both classes because I showed up, asked questions, participated, studied, did the work and went to office hours to review my exams. You will need to put in the work, but if you do, Dr. Finnegan will make sure you have a solid foundation. One of my all time favorite professors.
I took his classes last semester and it was amazing! Finnegan is a fun and chill guy, his lectures are very informative. Exams always stick to what was taught in class and you can potentially earn a lot of extra credits from it. All notes and recorded lectures are available on canvas. So if you do study hard before the exams, you will prob do fine.
He's awful. We have in class lecture assignments and I've done every single one and he still gives me no points for them. He let a quiz grade be a zero for everyone in the class for the entire semester because he's that technically awful. When asked about fixing it he urges us to stop worrying about our grades and to just keep doing the work.
Prof. Finnegan makes an introducutory class seem hard. If I didnt take chemistry in high school then I would've been very lost in the class the whole semester. He doesnt teach the materials in lecture, he just reads off his slides expecting you to know how he got the answers. overall not a great prof and doesnt listen to his students.
He honestly sucks at teaching; he just reads off the slides and expects us to know what he is saying. When he is trying to explain it, he makes it more complicated and he talks too fast. My TA talks about how he doesn't even teach the material, honestly, TA's are the reason I am passing because at least they explain and help, unlike Finnegan.
Unclear boring fast paced lectures. He might be great if you love chem but he should NOT be teaching an intro class. Whenever I said I was taking 101 with him someone would wish me luck. Now I understand why. I guess passing and even succeeding is doable but it WILL be difficult. Good luck. I will never be voluntarily taking a class with him again.
Terrible. Mean to TAs and students alike. Excessively difficult for a 101 course, given that students are stem-adjacent majors. Goes too far into detail while also speed lecturing and changed parameters of his grading from the syllabus. Berates students if they're "too slow" or get things wrong during in-class questions.
This class has been a nightmare. Lectures are sped up and lack explanations, grading is overly strict and based only on correctness rather then accuracy which feels unfair for chem 101, and exams are far harder than practice materials, often covering topics never taught. I study hard, but I truly felt set up for failure.
Do not trust these reviews. He's a super nice guy, it's just a class for freshman who don't realize they need to study more than 0-5 hours for an exam. If you put in effort, it is very easy to get an A
Finnegan is an absolutely horrible professor. I have hated every second of his class. At one point, we were sitting in a lecture, and he asked a passive-aggressive and complicated question at 9 am, and when none of us could give him an answer, he threatened to fail us all. He takes pride in bullying a bunch of 18-year-olds. Lab section was okay.
His lectures were so fast and so hard to understand. I wouldn't take this class unless I had to for credit. Labs were easy and the TA's were awesome, however lecture was a nightmare and he would say "this won't be on the test" and then put those things on the test. He would also not go over a whole chapter and put that whole chapter on the test.
I haven't heard great things about him; I would recommend studying between classes (doesn't have to be for long) just to make sure you understand the material. He has optional HW, I would recommend doing it, the question is similar to what you see on exams and is formatted the same as weekly quizzes. He does also curve a lot at the end of the year.
The bad reviews are written by people who use ChatGPT to do in-lecture assignments and who'd rather talk to each other than actually participate in class. He seems passive aggressive because people don't participate or DO anything. I'd be mad too! He is nice and tho he's hard to reach by email, if you go up to him and ask something he'll help you.
lectures were fast and hard to understand. I would never take this class. Labs were chill and my TA was pretty chill, however lecture was a nightmare and he would say "this won't be on the test" and then put those things on the test. tests were evil
After every exam I wished more than once to get hit by a car on the way to lecture. Other than that, its fine.
He did not know how to TEACH chemistry; he knew how to TELL you about chemistry. He is not a good professor, especially if you are a first-year student. The tests are not terribly hard, but GET READY TO STUDY because you have to teach yourself how to do everything. Attendance is required and he is not good at accommodating needs or feedback.
He was very rude when I emailed him. Makes rude remarks when you ask questions in class. I didnt feel good asking any questions because of his attitude and he seemed to make people seem dumb. He lectured a lot and lacked any explaining on how to solve actual problems.
Finnegan is non-existent as a professor. His in-class lectures are rather boring and don't explain the content too well, as they're only examples. Luckily, the textbook does the job for him, so make sure to read and review it. Labs are annoying, but not difficult. Lecture points and weekly quizzes have their points capped. Exams are not that bad.
Make sure to prepare notes for lecture, and use lecture more as a review than learning the material. Use the chemistry learning center as well, goodluck...
Didn't really teach, was confused every lecture and I was good at chemistry in high school
