What's with the impossible tests?

His tests are insane. Two quizes every week. Good luck, if you have to take him.
A hell of a lot of reading to do. He makes the course interesting. The quizzes are easy but his tests are so freaking impossible. I hear Wilson and Mallery are much better than him.
This class sucks. Avoid this guy if you can. He's tests are not straightforward and he's not the nicest guy when it comes to receiving help
I don't know what feels worse - the feeling after eating a loaded spicy burrito from the dining hall, or the feeling you get after taking one of this jerk's tests.
this guy is the head of the dept. which only magnifies the fact that he is the worst bio teacher at the U. take someone else while you can, or welcome to ex inferis
If you haven't taken ap bio and aren't premed... get out. just do it. It is painful and the tests are all trick questions
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
He makes the class seem easy and it's not!!! Don't take it!!
He's a great guy, and though he makes corny jokes tends to keep the lectures interesting. But exams are very difficult, and students should be prepared to study, a lot.
He's a great professor. The class itself is hard so be prepared to work. He is very clear and explains things very well, prepares you very well for the tests. If you pay attention to his lectures you know exactly what to expect for the test. His lectures are awesome! My favorite prof! =)
Gaines is a good lecturer but in my experience, a man of very low character. I turned in a paper late because I worked hard on it and made it my best work, but he gave me a 5/50, pulling my grade down to a B in a class in which my final was the third highest out of 250. He showed no mercy except to promise to write me a rec.; but this was a lie!
I was very interested in research before this course. I still am but the grading for this class was hard. Although Gaines does the grading he does not teach this course, it's a seminar from a variety of different professors
uh can i say completly lost?? i dropped the class b4 the failing grade had a chance to show up. this guy is tuff and makes the class confusing when he tries to throw in his wak jokes and make the class even more boring...
I don't see what's so bad about this guy; I think he's a good teacher.
TERRIBLE class. Avoid him if you can.
He is a wounderful lecturer, his method is great, it makes you be on top of the information about the class and you are constantly challanged to wnat to go ahead. Youmust work REALLY har with him but its worth it, because you learn a lot
The dudes cool, he's so passionate about his job that he even looks insane sometimes. I like it.
VERY hard tests. So far, this is the only B I've recieved while attending UM. I highly reccommend taking Biology with someone else.
I got an A- on my first test. If you want to do good on the test you definitely need to set aside a good amount of time to study. There is a lot of material covered for the tests and there are a lot of resources to study from. I took AP bio in high school but I did not understand a thing! (my teacher sucked!) Now it's all making more sense. I definitely suggest Gaines if you plan on retaining the material learned for later use....like for the MCATs!
very good, just pay attn.
tough class
Everything I learned in his class, I still remember. He is so passionate about what he teaches that he inspired me to go into teaching. I have been teaching biology for 10 years.
HARD class..amazing teacher..u will remember what u learn..may have to sacrifice an A for it
He teaches pretty well, but his tests are extremely hard.
extremely fast paced course, keeps you on your toes. hard.
HE IS THE DEVIL ON EARTH. DO NOT TAKE HIM. HE WILL SUCK YOUR BLOOD LIKE A HUNGRY TICK AND WILL DISPOSE YOU AS A PIECE OF GARBAGE. REMEMBER MY WORDS... DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!
He is a nice guy, makes jokes, and cares about his students. Has weekly quizzes and also holds review sessions for tests. His tests are really really hard. The final is HARDER than all the other tests. I got a B after everything but i worked really hard in his class.
this is definitely a hard class, if u want an A you not only have to read everything he assigns, but also do the online quizzes...he takes half his test from the campbell website (trust me)
gaines is a bit tough but he teaches well.
Taking professor Gaines will prepare you for any subsequent Bio course. Gaines is not hard but the material for the course is. His exams are straightforward. Make sure your grade is high going into the final because the FINAL IS HELL! Do the online quizzes because they will help with the exams
do not take this class with gaines. switch out of it immediately.
Gaines is wonderful. The only people who don't like him are people who aren't serious students. If you are a Pre-med student and/or Bio major, take Gaines. Your biology foundation will be solid.
Gaines is very fast-paced and does not always fully explain things. If you haven't taken AP Biology, you will most likely be lost. However, he does give extra credit quizzes, so he's not all bad.
You really have to put 100% into tis class! Read all the assigned chapters, do all the online EC quizzes, and go through all his old tests from years before... He really knows his stuff... but gets carried away and goes a little too fast... If you put all you can into this class you will be fine.
Dr. Gaines is EXTREMELY helpful, a lot of people warned me about taking the class but I found that as long as you are willining to work hard you can easily get a B or better. Dr. Gaines wants every student to succeed and is passionate about what he teaches. No biology teacher is going to be a walk in the park. He is my fav. prof. on this campus.
A professor who really cares about his students. He has quizzes almost every week and 3 exams-- but has 3 review sessions to accomodate everyone- that tell you what you need to know for the quiz or exam. He gives funny jokes too sometimes. His expalanations are clear. I highly recommend you go to the review sessions.
I love him! Hes a cutie and very entertaining. He is willing to explain whatever anyone asks and if we have concerns about a test or anything he is willing to figure something out. Lots of extra credit and review.
If you are taking bio for the credit requirement, do NOT take Gaines. For those of you in PreMed, I definitely recommend him. He is a hard professor. You do have to work hard to get an A. But he gives alot of extra credits and is always willing to help. Just make sure you attend all his classes, go to review sessions and read the book!!!
worst teacher ever, stay away from his course, the exams are impossible, he doesn't actully teach you anything, he just blazes through powerpoint slides, but in his mind, that qualifies as teaching, his jokes make me want to kill myself, he says he doesnt care about details, but then tests you on them, he also assigns extra readings, and a weekly quiz
Hard, but worth it
this is a very hard class but you will learn a lot. pre-meds should take him. tons of reading and a quiz every week, attendance isnt mandatory but i would never miss the class youd get lost. exams are very hard but he drops lowest. (of 3) dont take if your not intrested in bio or a nonscience major.
Great guy...tough class
Entertaining in class, has some funny moments. Really nice and knows material. Tends to go through slides quickly sometimes, but willing to go back and answer questions. Weekly quiz. Class isn't mandatory but takes an ungraded activity to see who was there. Study hard and tests arent bad. Drops 1 of 3. Final is HARD
the class average on the final was a D and he did not care-he is the only bio teacher that doesnt curve
ok so he knows what he's talking about but when it comes to taking the class without taking AP bio before...dont do it!! i was so lost the entire time!!! he doesn't curve and his test are beastly!!!
Dr. Gaines moves fast in lec, but is willing to answer ques in review. His tests are HARD and often says things won't be on them that are. The final is really rough had a B+ before, studied 13hrs, ended up with a C+. I did well on all of the quizzes, but couldn't score above an 80 on the tests. Solid foundation for bio, but not much to show for it.
Decent class - it's a pre-med make or break class, so this isn't a class you take if you're looking for an easy A. Tests are difficult, but not impossible. If you do well on the quizzes, turn in the ch.quizzes online, and get a good grade on your mini-paper (which is easy) then you'll pass the class.
Dr. Gaines is a phenomenal teacher. He posts his power points on his web site and a study guide book. This is very useful in taking notes and understanding the organization of biology and the text. His exams are hard, but if you study, take plenty notes, read, and go to his review sessions you will do fine. He relates bio to todays present issues.
Did great all semester and studied really hard, had an A but, honestly, get ready for his final. I studied my butt off but got a 70 so it killed my grade. Big dissapointment. Overall though, the class wasn't that bad.
This was just a lab with Gaines. But He'll definitely keep your attention. I had fun
He is the nicest teacher ever! and greatest person
If you go to the review sessions, you'll do just fine
What you read is not what is on the quizzes or tests. The review sessions did not help, and he seems like on of those professors that knows the material so well he can't explain it in a comprehensible fashion. Remember, what he assigns to read is NOT what is on the quizzes or tests, read the whole chapter, and then some (wikipedia,AP bio books, etc)
Really nice guy, has 3 review sessions a week for the quizzes, posts all his material online. His class is a lot of work but it's doable and if you do it all an A is possible. The quizzes really help with learning the material so youre not overwhelmed by the time the tests come around. Gives students opportunities for best grade possible
Excellent professor, very helpful. Explains concepts very clearly during the lecture, but you need to do alot of reading on your own if you want to do well. Do all the practice quizes online - quiz and exam questions will come straight from here.
Really nice guy and really wants his students to do well just NOT an easy class...Not that good of a teacher either....Final is TOUGH and I dont think he counted the extra credit either....Consider Mallery or WIlson before taking Gaines but if you have to, he isn't that bad....
Here is how to get an A: take all his online chapter quiz q's b/c 50% of quizzes + tests come from them, no matter what go to his review sessions (only time he answers questions), read pages before class + highlight, take notes on the ppt slides, and just attend. He emphasizes broad concepts, plus if you take notes on each slide, the final is cake!
Hard ass class. If you play your cards right, you can at least get a B. Study hard for the first test because everyone does terribly. The final sucks, but if you have a solid grade, you can calculate your bare minimum and still do well.
He's a tough professor but is very helpful. Reading is a must if you want to do well on the exams. If you pay attention in the lectures and do the online quizzes, then you'll do great. You just have to put effort in.
first off this is definetly a knock out class, its naturally hard, gaines is the hardest out of the 3 bil 150 professors. Tests are very challenging, they make you think, think every question through. He is a nice guy though, get to know him outside of class, if you get a bad grade, see him to find out what you can do better. take the quizes seriou
Switch out while you can. The answers are not definite, its just "what he thinks is right", IE, he makes his own questions and has no solid references for his answers. Basically, a lot of questions answers are more or less his informed opinion. If you want to know an answer for sure, get another professor.
Gaines is a great teacher, and he takes a lot of his questions from online chapter tests, so if you do them you can do well. But there is no help for the final...its kind of like you get an A all semester and then he butchers your grade....so I ended up with a B
This was the most discouraging class my first semester of college!
He is extremely difficult, I didn't think I would even pass his test. I probably would have made an A if I didn't have to miss one test, outside of my control. Show up, study hard, and you can pull off a passing grade.
i love Dr. Gaines. He is extremely difficult but he cares about his students. My biology teacher sucked in high school, so i walked into his class not even knowing the helical structure of DNA much less its nucleotide components. However, if you work hard you can definitely pull off an A, I mean i did and I didn't no anything before.
I do not recommend him as a teacher. He lectures too fast, his weekly quizzes are extremely hard, and the exams are impossible...He also makes you attend a weekly study session with an inept leader that doesn't know much about biology. It's very difficult to succeed in his class...Take someone else. He is a great person, but too difficult a teacher
Dr. Gaines is ridiculous. He acutally has a limit as to how many questions can be asked during class. He has weekly quizzes which are generally not that bad, but the exams are tough. Getting a good grade is not impossible, but it will require A TON of work on your part.
Good teacher overall; if you follow in his study guide while he lectures and take notes in it, its not hard to do well on his exams. Weekly quizzes can help your grade and keep you on track of studying. Reading the book may seem dreadful, but it really helped me get an A.
If you are looking for an easy class DON'T TAKE HIM!!! he lectures really fast, and if you don't read the book ahead of time it's very hard to understand his lectures. If you want an A READ THE BOOK!!! All his exams and quizzes are hard but not impossible if you are really well prepared by studying a lot. He is a nice guy though.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Unless you are willing to have absolutely no life outside of biology. It takes a lot of time & effort!! I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
gaines is an awesome professor. just study hard and maintain good study habits, an A is extremely possible. well worth it.
His tests are hard but he truly cares. Attendance is kind of mandatory. Has weekly quizzes and holds review sessions for them. On tests he holds multiple review sessions in case you can't make one. You should def read the book but he provides plenty of extra credit opportunities at the end of every test and let's you drop your lowest test.
He is a good teacher but sometimes goes to fast, try to talk to him if you do bad on his first test he will try to make you understand go to the reviews specially the early one. If not to interested in topic take Malary they told me he is the man
Best science professor I've ever had! I learned SO much from his class and would urge anyone (who puts effort into classes) to take him! Not an easy class but so worth it. Read the book for sure, go to study sessions, and study! Drops the first test of the semester so that helps. He prepares you really well for upcoming classes, two thumbs up!
Was my first class in coolege, and i wanted to die!! It was soo hard, and it was the most miserable time of my life. You have to study ALOT. This may be the class that requires more studying than any class in the entire university. Perhaps moreso b/c I took this class at 8 am.
He goes very fast at times and you have to pay A LOT of attntion. It's a hard class but he is a good teacher. Keep up with the notes and attendance is mandatory because he gives weekly quizzes. The questions on the quiz and the exams are very tricky, you study for HOURS, think you know your stuff, you do to test and realize you know nothing!
This class was the one I had to struggle most with to get an A, but Gaines honestly cares about your grades and gives weekly quizzes to keep you on top of your learning. He goes out of his way to give review sessions, in which he provides enough coffee and donuts to feed the county. Take A LOT of notes in the study guide and don't forget to read!
AVOID, if you want to get an A and not have a painful semester.
If you don't know too much about science, I don't recommend him. His class is really hard and he says himself you need about 10 hours minumum of outside study time. I'd say thats an underestimation. But he really does care about his students and their grades and tries to help them. The class is just ridiculously hard. Easier A? Look elsewhere.
he was a great professor. i never had bio b4 and i still got an A. lots of studying but well worth it, especially if you are premed. has a lot of quizzes so you can drop like 5 out of 15 or so and he drops your lowest test grade. if you study the powerpoints and do mastering bio you should be fine.
If you make a C or lower...its because you didn't study or slacked off too much. He drops 4 to 5 quizzez (out of 14-15) and the lowest test so there is really no excuse not to get an A. Just study/memorize till u can explain/describe stuff without the book and that means you're ready. & Do Mastering biology. Very cool guy and helpful. Just study.
I would not recommend this class for any incoming freshmen (150NT). It is very hard to pass with higher than a B. No matter how hard you study, he manages to ask impossible questions on the test. His lectures are rushed, and you need to do mastering biology and study to pass. Overall though, he was a wonderfully hilarious professor.
He is the hardest teacher i EVER took. I swear i never got a C in a class. I usually get A's and once in a blue moon a B. Stay AWAY from this class, go to mallery or something. I was a premed major but now im deciding to change. Seriously I read rate my professor and most "thumbs up" posts are BS. Listen to me and dont take this class.
Prof. Gaines is a great person, holds 3 review sessions WEEKLY for every quiz/exam. Lots of extra credit opportunities and he drops a lot of your bad grades. To get an A: 1) do MASTERING BIO!! and 2) take notes in his study guide 3) review his powerpoints. Don't read the book, it's a waste of time..just do mastering bio, he gets his questions there
Ok Gaines class is really hard... But if you are in this class you are probably premed/ marine bio/ nursing or some other science field... in which case, this is not nearly as hard as you're going to see. it seems impossible because it's freshman year, but if you can't handle this then I suggest changing tracks. i got an A+, it's doable
He is one of my favorite teachers but his class is hard. If you study for his weekly quizzes and do well on them that it will help your grade. Go to his weekly reviews for the quizzes! And study from his notes , I never read the book once.
Excellent teaching for a somewhat complicated class. His class was really challenging, but if you studied correctly doable. And you actually end up learning!
He is extremely nice and really committed To the students he gives lots of extra credit and hold a bunch of review sessions.
It's better to read the book and go over the powerpoints because they're more in depth than his lectures. The workshop modules are useless. Make sure that when you get to genetics you study your behind off because he doesn't seem to know what he's talking about.
THE WORST TEACHER IN THE WORLD! Terrific guy, would do anything for anyone. However, he is an absolutely HORRIBLE teacher. He goes way too fast and expects you to know ALL the information already. His class is basically a "review" of material. Well if you don't know the material to begin with then how the heck are you supposed to review?!!
He's a nice guy, but the class is ridiculously hard. His speeds through his lectures and gives quizzes once a week. He holds reviews for every test and quiz, which is nice. Also he requires you do Mastering Bio online, which is really helpful. The tests were so hard, if you aren't willing to dedicate a lot of time to this class, try another teacher
Really great professor. Take him if you really want to understand the material. His tests are tough, but if you study the material well it is possible to get a A. He has extra credit on quizzes every week and is willing to bump up your grade if you do the Mastering Biology Assignments. If you love bio take Dr. Gaines!
Professor Gaines has lots of charisma and truly wants the best for his students, but his class is unnecessarily hard. His lectures are fast, and i recommend taking notes in the notebook he makes you buy. Most of the test questions require knowledge from the book and MASTERING BIOLOGY. Dont take him because of his analytical quizzes and tests.
I came in this school as a Bio major just because I merely like Bio. Taking Dr.Gaines' class made me love it even more. I spent the whole semester studying for this class but it was so worth it. He tries his best to make the students understand even though he has to explain the thing 3 times. He just loves the students and teaching. Love him!
This was the hardest class I have ever taken in my entire life. I received my first C in this class. I did all the work and never missed a day of class but I still struggled. I learned from taking Gaines that science is actually not my thing. Only take this class if you love science and are interested in going to medical school
This class was the worst of my life, and many other people that I know. I never missed a single lecture, did the readings, and even the optional online assignments, and I still only got a C. The tests are mostly on the application of what you learned and he doesn't cover that in class. He made me hate science so much that I switched my major.
Nice man Bad teacher.
If you don't love biology, GET OUT. His class is great for very motivated students with a strong background in biology. It's hard, but very doable: He drops 3 quizzes and 1 test! The weekly quizzes keep you on your toes and either reading the textbook or doing masteringbio will get you A's. With a strong background I read very little and got a B.
DO NOT TAKE. If you have to be prepared to let biology consume your life. Not an easy A or even B by a long shot.
DO NOT take his class. He'd ask if we got the topic and out of like 200, 1 or 2 ppl would say yeah and he'd move on. He's all about application and you need to read the book. There's a quiz every Tues. Do MasteringBio, quizzes are based off that. Attend class, classwork is how he takes attendance; gives extra credit for it. The final is murder.
Gaines is a great person and he is passionate about his class. However, his tests are just ridiculous. I studied out of the book, did all mastering went to all workshops, went to class and did everything I could. Straight A's on all the quizes. Straight C's on every exam. If you are not good at analytical thinking DON'T TAKE him.
for SWEET LORD's sake, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Dr. Gaines talks about critical thinking and MCAT prep, and he tests accordingly, however critical thinking requires a firm understanding and knowledge of the material and for a beginning BIO class its unreasonable. HE TESTS AS IF YOU HAVE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE! Consider yourself warned.
Interesting class, however I fod Dr. Gaines' lectures were at times lacking in detail, and at times the information wasn't communicated clearly. He says you don't need the book, but if you don't read prepare to do poorly on quizzes/tests. He's always willing to help and has quiz/test reviews. Mastering is useful, the tests are often hard, but fair.
If you don't have any background in biology his class would be difficult. There are weekly quizzes and I don't think he prepares students enough for his tests - they have MCAT questions on them. It's possible to do well and he has good intentions, but the tests are very hard compared to other professors
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am good at science, did all the workshops and mastering and still failed the tests. So basically even if you give it 110 percent, do all the work and about 7 hours of your life every week outside of class, be prepared to still have a bad grade.
Gaines is not a bad man, just not the teacher for everyone. I was a Biochemistry major when I went in, but I changed my mind entirely after his class. If you aren't in love with science GET OUT. This class is a weeding out process. You WILL struggle if you are not committed to science or if your passions lie elsewhere, as mine did.
NOT easy. You need to study at least every other day to get an A. There are quizzes every week - his tests are mostly MCAT questions This class is a lot of work, takes up most of my time.
Gaines is one of my favorite professors I've had at UM. Yes his class requires a lot of work, but no more than what is expected of aspiring pre-med students. He always goes out of his way to accommodate the students in his class and I love that his style is to leave room for a lot of independent learning. I'd definitely take another class with him!
A very hard, frustrating, and time consuming class. Dr. Gaines is a very nice man and means well but his class is insanely difficult.
This class was such a mistake. Even if you read the chapters, do the MasteringBio attend the lectures and workshops, it is still difficult to get even a C in this class. He expects intro to bio students to be able to think on an MCAT level- ludicrous. I had all A's except for this class. It's just way too much.
Prof Gaines is a great man with the best intentions for this class. At times it can be incredibly difficult; however, unlike other teachers he actually does everything he can to prepare you. If you aren't interested in biology this class would be very difficult but for pre-med students it's a great decision to prepare you for years to come.
This class ruined my GPA. I attended every class, workshop, review sessions, and exam reviews and studied my butt of for every assessment, and yet I still got only a B. Dr. Gaines is a great person but his class is incredibly difficult and challenging. There are 3 mc exams and a final. He drops lowest exam grade. This class is not an easy A.
Overall, I had a really positive experience in Dr. Gaines's class. While exams were challenging, they taught me how to think critically about material. Dr. Gaines is engaging in class and holds many review sessions. I loved attending class. It was a lot of work, but I studied hard and got an A. It was definitely worth it! Great class!!
ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS TEACHER!!! From day 1 he was a very caring and intelligent man. He truly wanted all his students to do well on his exams but at the same time, he didn't want to set them up for failure in upper level Bio classes. He is probably the most helpful teacher at this school and has the most review sessions throughout the semester.
Professor Gaines is a good person, there's no doubt about it. He also makes sure you really learn biology. However, if you want a good grade in a class, this is not the class to be in. I wish I hadn't taken Gaines freshmen year for bio because I heard about so many other people at Miami and other schools who easily got an A in BIL 150.
This is a very difficult class. I did well in AP bio in high school, so I came into this class pretty confident, but it ended up being my hardest class of the semester. Gaines is clearly very knowledgable and seems to care deeply about his students, but he goes through material very fast and I found his lecture style to be hard to follow at times.
gives me nightmares
Though you really have to work for your grade, this class is totally worth taking with Gaines. Comparing to every other BIL 150 teacher, you learn the absolute most in Gaines and are the most prepared for the future with this class. You're going to have to prepare, but with Gaines you don't just memorize the info, you actually understand why.
If you haven't taken AP Bio relatively recently then you are going to be SO lost in this course. He's a sweet guy himself but he rushes through lectures, wants you to read 5 chapters a week, has a quiz every week, as well as an online quiz that takes you minimum 2 hours and you only get 2.5 points if you get a high enough grade on it.
Dr. Gaines is the sweetest professor ever, I love him as a person. However, LISTEN CAREFULLY, do NOT take BIL 150 with him. I took this class because I wanted to master the material, but I ended up hurting my GPA as a freshman. Every week there is a quiz(15 total) & at least 2 lengthy online assignments, 3 exams thru semester and no curve applied.
Don't skip, go to test reviews, and try to read. He's here to weed out the kids who won't make it.
He will destroy your GPA. You might be thinking that you're ready for the challenge, just as I was, but this man's sole ambition is to screw your GPA. I still have nightmares about his class. Class average is a 52! 3% get A's, 5% B's, 80% C's, and the rest fail. If you have the slightest dream of going to med school, stay away from him, or suffer!
I hate to say this, but you really are at an insurmountable disadvantage if you haven't taken AP Bio- and not just because it's "omg too hard!" The problem here is that the questions on the exams are based entirely on his lectures. If you have no bio background you'll get lost VERY easily, and then you can't depend on the book to teach yourself.
I think Gaines is a really nice guy, but honestly, I think he expects too much out of us. On the syllabus, he says he expects his students to spend 10 hours a week, just reading the text book. This doesn't include his mastering bio assignments which are ridiculously long, or just studying. I wouldn't recommend unless you love reading bio
Ridiculously hard for a level 1 bio class. crazy amount of work, i wasnt able to focus on any of my other classes. i HIGHLY recommend not taking him. Nice guy, and will help you if needed.
Probably the worst teacher on University of Miami's Coral Gables Campus. He has a very backward way of "teaching", which is to quiz you on material, THEN teach you what you were just quizzed on. The notebook that is mandatory for the class does not reflect quizzes or tests at all. you learn how things work, then you're tested on how they don't work
WAY too hard as an intro class. this KILLED my GPA even w getting A's and B's on exams! I got a C! Unless u took AP Bioknow bio, STAY AWAY. Lectures too confusingVERY FAST. Grading scale NOT clear. Nice guy in general but extremely arrogant & sarcastic in answering questions. (hard) quizzes & Mastering every week, tough but doable exams.
Expects way too much of us. Claims we should spend 10 hours+ a week on the class when most others have other classes that demand at least half of that time. Not a very good lecturer which is troublesome because his tests are very difficult. Studying for hours does not help; he does not test memorization, he tests critical thinking skills.
Tests are extremely difficult, even if you read the book, it is difficult to get an A or B. Lectures are very fast and confusing. The weekly quizzes sometimes don't cover the material he said he was going to cover. I would not recommend this as an intro bio course to anyone. Test reviews are useless, as he gets very confused about the questions.
Terrible teacher that does not know what he is doing.
Not a bad teacher or class; If you follow the syllabus and read what you're supposed to read and when you're supposed to read it, along with doing the study modules on mastering bio, the tests aren't bad. However, the final was brutal... Brought me down from an A to a B, still feeling bitter after all that work I put in. You definitely learn lots.
Time to get straight to the point. This class is doable IF YOU ARE WILLING TO WORK FOR IT. This is not a BS class. I started working for it midway through and got a B. Could have gotten an A if I worked hard the entire time. STUDY FOR QUIZZES AND DO THE MASTERING. TESTS ARE HARD, SO DO NOT CRAM FOR HIS TESTS! Lectures don't help. I taught myself.
This class is extremely difficult but doable. His lectures were very confusing and fast. So, be prepared to teach yourself a lot of the material. Also, I didn't like his grading method. If I had gotten 4 more multiple choice questions right, I could have been bumped up to the next letter grade--but he didn't do that. It was just 4 MC questions!
I had no previous Bio knowledge. This class consumed my life and I got a B+. 90 is an A not A-. Would recommend for students that really care about learning material and having it stick for the future. Great guy and I loved this class as it was very rewarding.
This class isn't easy. If you want to succeed you have to work hard, and study a good amount. I didn't take AP bio in highschool and still manages to get A thanks to him giving me three points for free. So yeah he's a pretty nice guy, who will make you work hard and there might be times you feel lost and hopeless, but I promise you can get an A.
Dr. Gaines makes you work for your grade. He provides ample extra credit opportunities though so take advantage! There is one group project that is an easy A as long as you follow the guidelines and participate. He holds three review sessions a week and even though is one of the toughest professors, he's also one of the best.
If you want to challenge yourself, there is so many you could do. Messing up your GPA is definitely not for you. Unless, you like to do hundreds of bio questions, ready to have quiz every week at 8am and exams. Go for it. I really wanted to like him. I do.
Any upperclassmen will know this is the usual difficulty in any normal science course here. You get used to the work, but if anything this course was easier than it should have been. The curves were thrown everywhere 18-20% curves is a god send if you didn't get at least a B, you didn't even try because you were probably getting D's without curves.
Gaines is the greatest. If you want an A, you will have to work, but he provides more than enough resources to do that. Tests have tons of extra credit, and the weekly HW assignments and workshops are basically free points. He wants you to succeed, and will help you with anything you need. Favorite professor by far.
Do not take this class!!! Absurd amount of work for one class. Mastering Bio questions which he makes you do every week take at least 5 hours to complete even if you do use the internet. Quizzes every week. Questions on his test and quizzes are hard and confusing. Good luck on the final because theres really no way to get an A on it. Horrible prof!
Taking Dr. Gaines for BIL 150 was by far my best college decision yet. Though you work a lot harder than any of the other sections, you also learn SO much more. He prepares you for the biology on the MCAT which is so important if you are pre-med. He cares so much about his students and takes extra time every single week to do review. WORTH THE WORK

You really have to work for an A in this class. Studying a lot is essential especially for the quizzes he has EVERY WEEK. However, he does give a lot extra credit on the quizzes and tests, so that's a good thing. He gives a TON of Mastering Biology homework so don't wait till the last minute to do it. Just show up to class, take notes, and study!!
The biggest college wake up call ever. Take him only if your truly ready to bust your butt studying your first semester in college at 8 am
Gaines is a great guy. He expects a lot from you, but it is still a very fair class and grading criteria. Every test has extra credit, and your grades are not only based on tests. There are weekly quizzes which are actually harder than the exams, but they have extra credit as well and he drops a few.
The biggest college/premed wake up call EVER. You really have to dedicate your life to this class to get an A. He is the sweetest guy but he does not mess around and really makes you work. Doing extra credit, practice tests/quizzes, and reading the book are essential. So hard but so incredibly worth it. I feel like I can conquer anything after this
Gaines is the toughest professor you will ever take in terms of work. The material can be straightforward, but its all tested analytically. No simple questions. Lots of homework, but it'll make you learn the material. I never used the textbook and got an A, literally just use the study guide and his lectures
You have Mastering Biology every single week along with readings from the textbook. There is a quiz every Tuesday at 8am thats not only based on his lectures but on the readings and Mastering Biology as well. You learn the most from his class because the workload is heavy, not because he teaches well. This class is not an easy A.
Don't take class unless you are a freshman pre-med students - class is completely catered to these kinds of students, and unrelatable to those pursuing other majors of study. He teaches too quickly and gives absurdly hard test questions.
I felt liberated when his course ended. Hes a great guy dont get me wrong, but coming from a student who has gotten As in O-Chem and Physics at UM, this class was ridiculous. Too much work. He goes over many chapters in a week, so you have tons to read on top of the MB hw. Test questions fry ur brain, I don't think gen bio should be this difficult.
Gaines is the best bio professor ever. If you're premed, you'll just be hurting yourself by taking other professors because they won't prepare you as well. I went to all the lectures and didn't read the book and ended the course with a high A. All you need to have a good grade in his class is to show up and take good notes!
Professor Gaines is a good teacher. But like most of the other reviews said, he is incredibly hard. All the questions are critical thinking and good for preparing for MCAT. He gives a lot of opportunity for redemption, with bonuses, quizzes,a project, and tests. He's not very approachable, though. This is a very independent-studying course.
I never even bought the book for this class and I never really studied for his tess/quizzes. HIs online hw is a pain and takes forever to finish, so divide it up between friends. Go to class, go over the online homework, and take good notes
He is interesting. Be ready to be on your toes at all times. He makes you work for sure.
You will need to put in the work in this class to succeed. However, if you do put in the work, you will be rewarded . This class also serves as a great tool to learn how to perform well in college as well as on the MCAT. This is an intro BIO class. There is a TON of material to cover. Gaines does his best to emphasize what is important/tested.
The tests make no sense and he is not willing to help at all
Tests (and sometimes quizzes) are incredibly/unnecessarily hard. Forget studying for other classes, as studying for something as simple as a quiz in this class should take up most of your time. Also speeds through lectures and makes you read idiotic current events articles that have nothing to do with what is on the quiz. Would not take again.
Professor Gaines makes you work for everything and the class is very difficult. I took AP, had a solid background for Bio and I learn so much more every day. Studying for this class is more than I have ever done before. Also, going to office hours helps. Taking any other professor is selling yourself short if you want to go to med school.
Dr. Gaines is the best professor I've ever had. If you're planning to be Pre-Med, this class shouldn't scare you, it should inspire you--it should make you want to work this hard in all your classes and in everything you do. Gaines pushes you, but medical school will be much harder than this, I promise. I would recommend this course to any student.
Info he gives in lectures is often ambiguous, irrelevant, & rushed. if you really want to understand the material you have to read the book because his teaching is not helpful (and neither is the study guide.) If you're premed his class is probably a good idea, but if not, stay away! He's not very accessible (he doesn't even have office hours!!)
He is an awful teacher, worst I have ever had. He reads off of slides and does not explain things at all. You HAVE to rely on reading the book if you want an A. In review sessions for quizzes and tests students often correct him and we have to take a while talk out a problem because even he does not know the answer.
He is a awful teacher, the worst I have ever had. Their are Quizzes every week. Don't bother going to lectures as he does not explain, or go into detail in class you just have to read the book. He does not know what he is talking about and is often corrected by his students. The tests are very hard. The class is only offered at 8am.
Lecture consists of him skimming over huge concepts and unless you took AP bio in high school you're either screwed or have to be motivated enough to teach yourself everything. Also, he expects you to pickup the concepts fully in class and calls down groups of people to answer a question in front of everyone.
Hardest class I have ever taken. I stopped showing up to class and quickly found out Khan academy is better. His tests are nearly impossible. You can study as much as you want but still will find problems you can not answer. None of his tests or quizzes are regurgitation of facts they are all application based. Good if you are unbelievable at Bio.
Dr. Gaines is a very nice man, but do not take this class. The amount of homework is crazy and instead of memorization, every test is critical thinking questions. There are quizzes every week. Definitely not an easy A or introduction to college classes. If you have him, good luck.
I absolutely loved Prof Gaines. While it was a hard class, that isnt a bad thing because you learn an incredible amount and he's very dedicated to making sure his students do. Very inspiring and caring man helps prepare for MCAT. If youre pre med and you dont take this class honeslty I think youre missing out. Try to sit in the front
Took this class first semester of Freshman year, my opinion is if you are planning on taking this course with no Biology background be prepared to study harder than those already exposed to the info. AP Biology really helps. Didn't find the lectures or the book really helpful. The material was really challenging and there is so much outside work.
Took as a freshman. Quizzes & tests have a lot of crictical thinking but also extra credit questions which help. Gives other extra credit, DO THEM ALL!!! Video project for an easy A. Study guide is great for MCAT prep. I regret not studing more bc I could have done much better. Take notes and learn from the HW and TB. Must put in a lot of work!
Everything about his class is difficult. You have to be on top of your game 24/7 to get an A. His tests are crazy hard and goes way way way too fast. I would not take him again. But in the end you'll learn a lot if you stay committed.
It takes some time to get to know Dr. Gaines (as he his always speeding to his next meeting.) I have known him for seven semesters now (five of which I took credits with him), so believe me when I say that he cares about your performance, your future, and what you think of him. If you have the drive to change yourself, I suggest chasing him around.
The worst professor I have ever had at UM. Was a pre-med/bio major, got discouraged and switched majors after taking his class. Even for pre-med students, I don't think the way Gaines teaches is helpful; the only thing that helps you learn the information is the ridiculous amount of hours you put into studying for his tests (teaching yourself).
Too much work for both science and non-science majors. "Critical thinking" based questions that aren't related to his lectures and assessments. Do not take if you haven't taken AP bio (maybe don't take even if you have).
Do not take this class if you are not a pre-med. If you are then the class will definitely help you if you do well. There online homeworks are so long and annoying and the the questions he asks on his quizzes and exams require a lot of "critical thinking" as he says. However, he is a great guy and is very respected in his field.
Gaines expects A LOT out of his students. Don't expect to get much out of his lectures, I had to read every chapter from the textbook to get the info. He emphasizes "critical thinking", aka insanely difficult ?'s that don't relate to what you learned. If you work really hard & dedicate all of your free time to his course, you'll get a decent grade.
Gaines is a great professor. If you are gutsy enough to take his class, get ready to do some serious work, his course load is not for the weak. But, after you take his class, you will feel like a genius and every other science course you take will feel like a walk in the park. Very sassy man but a talented lecturer. Highly recommend.
Gaines is incredibly passionate about the subject. He gives you the latest information about current events related to the subject. He quizzes weekly but offers 3 weekly reviews for them. He gives LOTS of extra credit which balances out the difficulty of some of his exam questions. If you are pre-med you should DEFINITELY take bio150 with him.
took fall 2015. I ended up withdrawing due to personal reasons. He challenges you to be your best and really work for your grade. one of the best lectures he gave was his cancer lecture where he talked about his son who passed away. now oncology is an area that intrigues me very much. he doesnt let you take the easy way out, but makes you work!
weekly quizzes every tuesday covering A LOT of material. he skims over material in lecture so you end up having to do all the readings and teach yourself. Tests are hard. he expects you to put in so much outside work for the class throughout only to MAYBE get an extra bump at the end of the semester if you do EVERY extra credit assignment.
save yourself
He is very passionate about biology but he is not the best teacher in the world. He flies through all of his lectures and if you want to do well in the class you have to teach yourself everything. He is a very nice man but I regret taking his class.
Good person, cares a lot about biology. So freaking hard. I love bio, but this class ruined my gpa. He is just tough, never stops to answer questions, and forgets that its a 100 level course, not a 400. Needs to slow down. Needs to remember that teaching is not about "stump the chump," it's about helping people truly learn a subject.
HORRIBLE! Quizzes are given every week, they are tough! Test are hard and have a lot of critical thinking questions! Office meetings don't help either. Study Guide provided is GARBAGE!
prof gaines is THE BEST! His class is very tough, but your grade is directly correlated with the amount of work and time you put into studying. If you are pre-med, do yourself a favor and take this class! Go to his office hours! He also likes to have conversations with students about their goals and stuff outside of the course!
If you are willing to put the work in, an A is definitely attainable. He may be quite tough for a BIL150 course, but I wouldn't advise anyone to go with another prof because you would be doing a disservice to your learning. If bio won't be a part of your future, pick an easier prof. for the easy A. Really pushes you to your limits. Great guy.
Gaines is the best teacher I ever had. He cares so so much. There are tons of bad reviews on him, but if you're a hard worker you can't do it. Its not an easy A, you can't just not pay attention. Pay attention and try and you WILL do well.
-Flies through his lectures. You won't learn anything in class. Your best bet is to teach yourself through Mastering Biology and reading the textbook -Speaking of Mastering Biology, you will have assignments that take hours to complete -Very difficult exam questions. They come straight off of the MCAT. Way too difficult for a 100-level class
I could care less if he writes our committee letters, this man is completely overrated. Absolutely arrogant, he shows no measurable talent and basks in the god-complex that he has over students. No you don't have to suck up to him if you're a pre-med, there are better people out there like Dr. Myers who *actually* know how to do their job properly.
he is the W.O.A.T. Professor Gaines is the most narcissistic, rude, disrespectful man I have ever met! There are weekly homework assignments that take hours on end that end up having little-to-no relevance because his quizzes and exams are nearly impossible for the average student and do not have anything to do with the basics of biology.
IF YOU ARE NOT PREMED, do not take him. He is very very very very hard for if you are just taking this course to satisfy your prereqs. Especially if you are coming in as a freshman having no background in biology, this class will take 85% of your study time your freshman year. If you are premed however, do yourself a favor and take him, its good.
A lot of information and specifics to retain in this class. His lectures are alot DEF do not take 8AM CLASS as a Freshman!! GPA ruiner! Make sure you have a good background in BIO if you are taking this class. Final is impossible
Dr. Gaines is a nice man, but is very tough for BIL 150. I made the mistake of actually using the "required" $200 book, as all his exam material comes directly from lectures, mastering bio, and workshops, NOT the textbook. Would only use the textbook for clarification on challenging topics, but honestly there are much better online alternatives.
he is hilarious and a really good teacher! open to questions and accessible to students. this class is a lot of work but its not impossible
I love him honestly but a lot of people don't. Honestly if you're willing to work and you're a good student you'll be fine. He's great though. Sure there's a decent amount of homework but he sends emails out religiously and nothing is ever unfair or confusing so there's nothing to complain about. The instructions he gives are very direct.
Gaines is by the far the hardest professor for an intro biology class you can take. He gives weekly quizzes that are extremely detailed on material he doesn't emphasize. He spends little to no time explaining complex content, in which he asks very detailed questions on. He goes on random tangents that consumes class time. Overall, avoid this class.
This is definitely the hardest class Ive had to take so far. The material isnt tough once you go over it multiple times however I find myself having to re-teach the material to myself because Dr. Gaines goes extremely fast, rushes over complex material, he gives weekly quizzes, and his tests have extremely detailed questions. Wouldnt take again.
If you are Pre-Med take Gaines. The class is challenging but if you are dedicated and work for it, it will pay off. GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS. He has office hours by appt only so this is the best time to ask questions and clarify things before the weekly quiz Tuesday. The tests are challenging but if you study and try on the homework you'll be good
Despite it being a relatively difficult course, taking this class is very useful if you are planning to take the premed route. He can clearly explain the concepts and is very good at clarifying if something becomes difficult to grasp.
I took Gaines as for HPM, an I was nervous at first but in the end I really liked him. If you put in the effort its not too bad. For his tests there will be like 56 questions each worth 2 points but then it will be out of a 100 points (so essentially 12 bonus points). In the end I'm very happy I took him because I feel like I know way more.
This man made me hate biology. avoid at all costs
Honestly, I should have read the reviews before taking this class. This class will push you to the limit. Its an 8AM. You might tell yourself like I did that you are a morning person, but youre not. Do NOT take this class. If you have taken AP BIO in highschool, you may do well, but if you havent GOOD LUCK. HE GIVES INSANE amount of work.
Worst. Mistake. Of. My. Life. I came into college thinking I was going PreMed and wanted to be a doctor, this man ruined my view on science in general and now I have changed my major to humanities. If you want to continue to like science, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I have more homework and work to do in this class than my other 4 combined.
I wish I could go back in time and read the reviews. I REGRET TAKING THIS CLASS AND NOT DROPPING. Its a freshmen class and it feels like youre in medical school. He doesnt know how to lecture and his exams and quizzes are VERY DIFFICULT. If you care about your mental health, DO NOT TAKE HIM. I dont understand how he is still a professor. DO NOT
I don't think I've ever studied as much as I have in this class compared to other STEM classes. If you like pressure take him. If you're truly ambitious of becoming a doctor take him. If you really want to learn biology take him. The amount of work given is a direct correlation of how much you'll learn. His goal is to mold resilient students.
In Gaines' class you will learn a lot, but prepared for MASS amounts of work and studying. The workload is overwhelming and will force you to focus on just Bio instead of the other classes you have. Only take if you are pre-med and are willing to work a lot to learn. If you are willing to sell your soul to the devil than take this man.
This was literally the hardest class that I have ever taken. It's very clear that he is knowledgeable on the material but his ability to effectively teach it in an understandable way is lacking. I pretty much had to go back and re-teach myself everything or find other resources to help me understand all of the concepts.
Just don't take unless totally necessary (I did not have any other choice for a bio professor). Unless you want to work with him later on or are pre-med, the amount of work just is not worth it. His tests are very difficult as well. Seems like a good man, just not meant to teach an intro bio class .
Gaines is the hardest professor to take for BIL 150. The reading can be a lot at times and his exams can be challenging. Additionally, you definitely have to attend lectures to understand what the uploaded powerpoints mean. However, I am very glad I took the class because Gaines is a very caring professor that makes you really understand the class.
Took AP bio last year which was pretty helpful. Definitely go to lecture because that's very much what exams and quizzes revolve around. He's a busy guy but makes himself accessible thru rev. sessions. Wants you to succeed by putting in the effort. LOVES CRITICAL THINKING. People will say he's one of the toughest science profs around but not so bad
This guy thinks very highly of himself, so "office hours" don't really exist, as he doesn't have the time to help a freshman out with difficult biology concepts. He is a nice guy, but not a great professor as he reads off of PowerPoints and the quizzes/tests are almost entirely based off what he says during lectures.
Dr. Gaines has such a great personality but I hated his class. I've heard that if you're on the pre-med track you should take him. I was not. Also, if you haven't taken AP Bio or just a Biology class recently, DO NOT take his class. No matter how hard I studied I always failed. I even went to tutoring and his office hours. I don't recommend
the class is hard no matter what prof you take it with. Gaines is a good teacher and sets you up for success as much as he can. take good notes using his guide from the bookstore, it points out all important topics for tests and quizzes and then you dont need a text book. online HW was actually helpful if you really do it
Prof. Gaines is a nice guy and tries to set u up to succeed in the long run, only if ur pre-med. Lectures can be confusing & hard to follow as he bounces around alot. Quizzes & tests are not your typical bio assessments as they are much harder. Sometimes feels like your answering MCAT type questions. Learned a lot from the HW by taking notes on it
Prof Gaines is very passionate about biology so he wants his students to learn. Homework is tedious, lectures are important, reading the textbook was SUPER important for me. I made outlines using the textbook & his lecture notes & thats how i studied, i always felt lost after his lectures but then i read the TB & it made more sense. Dont be scared!
Dr. Gaines was a very unique teacher to say the least. His lecture style is very fast and covers lots of information in a very quick manner. I went to all his lectures and found them helpful, although you definitely need to spend LOTS of extra time on your own to master the material (youtube or reading the textbook).
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS if you are planning on a 4.0 GPA! Lectures are compressed, useless (learned everything from the text). Hates answering questions. Trick questions. Homework is on material he specifically said we won't need to know. Excessively difficult final. EXHAUSTING course, went to every review session and lecture, still ended up with a B
Taking Professor Michael Gaines class is one of the most Deeply regretted choice of my life. From my experience, this man does not respond to emails, does not take into consideration extra credit unless every single one is done. If you want to experience a semester on the verge of depression and anxiety, this biology class is for you. Save yourself
Bioethics was a clear cut class. Quiz every class which meets once a week based on reading assigned for that class. Quizzes are 2 questions each, but need to read. Participation matters. Easily able to get an A in class if you do well on quizzes and participate once or twice as it is a discussion based class! Just do the readings!
Dr. Gaines is a good person. He truly cared for our class and you can tell how dedicated he is to teaching us. He gives many extra credit chances. However, the class is very challenging. He makes his questions are critical thinking. I suggest studying from his lectures and homework rather than from the book to get a good grasp of concepts.
lecture is extremely necessary. spent hours studying to still fail some of the quizzes and exams. oddly specific and critical thinking questions are extremely common. review sessions for the quizzes were helpful. be sure to keep up with all the extra credits. they aren't worth a lot but its still something.
Professor Gaines is a nice person, I guess. However he does not teach well, and he has clearly lost all of his passion for the subject. If you want to meet with him during office hours give yourself at least three weeks notice, as he is never available because he thinks of himself too highly to be bothered by meeting with students.
The man made me laugh, but more often than not, the man made me cry. I did well because AP Bio- DO NOT take if you haven't taken bio recently. His exams are crazy hard, his lectures are boring, and his exams are entirely based off of his wack lectures. Also, quizzes every Tuesday at 8 am. But am I going to cop that letter of rec? 100%.
Gaines is generally a nice and funny guy, but his class is not. He doesn't always do the best job at explaining concepts, especially at his review sessions. Entire grade is based on 100 for 3 exams and 200 points for final exam. Not an easy A to say the least, prepare for his class to be your priority in order to get a passing grade.
very fun class. have differnet doctors come in and speak about there profession. once a week. weekly quizzes and a 12 page paper due at end of semester. no exams or final
I got an A so actually listen to me. If you haven't taken AP Bio do not take this guy. If you have, you might get an A only reason bc it's review but the exams are stupid hard for no reason. "Prepares you for MCAT", yeah ok. Towards the end I stopped caring bc I realized there was no point. Try and find his old exams. Good luck if you have him.
Gaines is incredibly knowledgeable and the most caring professor I've ever had. He is easily accessible and responds fairly quickly to emails. As long as you attend class and take notes, getting an A in the class shouldn't be a problem. He's a great instructor and is always down to help!
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN!! He seems like a nice guy, but if you havent taken AP bio, you wont get an A in this class even if you study 24/7. Not only will you work super hard to just pass this class, but you will have to focus all your energy on it so your other classes suffer. Avoid at all costs
DO NOT TAKE GAINES FOR BIL 150 UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE. I made the mistake of taking this class with chemistry and calculus (as many pre-med students do) and it was unbearable. The questions on the quizzes and exams are extremely specific. Unless you plan on memorizing the Campbell biology textbook, avoid this class at all costs!!
hardest class I have ever taken. Almost gave up on studying bio after this class, but BIL 160 is much easier. I got a C in BIL150 with Gaines, but an A in BIL160 with another teacher. So basically, don't give up. lectures are fascinating, and he cares about his students. The tests are SO hard. Study by doing practice problems.
Dr. Gaines is very passionate about what he does and it is extremely evident throughout the course. The class is rough however he has review sessions three times a week and has a lot of ec on all of the exams. That being said your grade really depends on the amount of work you put into it (like most of the other premed reqs). AP Bio really helps.
I'm a hard working student; took chem, bio & math the prev semester, I had a 4.0 & honors before Gaines. He tells you to study specific topics that are NOT on the exam. When he says NOT to focus on something, do the opposite. 12-15 hours of work outside class - I have other classes & FT job. HORRIBLE professor. I learned nothing from him.
I purposely walk in the road when going to his class in hopes of getting hit by a car; his class is horrible! This class is the worst and I actually used to enjoy biology lol. The tests and quizzes are all very analytical. He expects you to study biology for 10 hours a day and ignore the rest of your classes. Please DO NOT take this class.
DO NOT TAKE HIS BIO150!!!
He's really tough but he cares so much. Plenty of extra credit, posts old exams/quizzes, gives bonus questions, always responds to emails and is available for meetings. He doesn't curve so be prepared to study a lot if you want to pass exams. Avoid taking with chem if you can, they're both intense classes and it was hard to balance, but possible.
I liked having Gaines as an instructor, but his teaching style is not for everyone. If you are a human Quizlet I would definitely not take his class. If you cant apply all of the specific information you learn during the lectures into conceptual examples, you wont do well in the class. Although VERY scatterbrained he truly cares about his students
Get ready to work hard if you take this class. You have to put in the time to read the textbook, do the homework, use the old quizzes and exams for practice. He's super accessible for office hours, hosts review sessions, and gives sm extra credit. He wants his students to do well. If you take advantage of the resources, you will succeed.
Prof. Gaines is an amazing guy but his class is difficult & time consuming. Exams are very difficult but if you pay attention, take notes, study in advanced and use the mastering bio resources to study you will do fine. This class is challenging but will make you a better student. If you are not pre-med I would take this class with another prof.
This class is tough, trust me. But he really cares and wants you to learn. Pay attention to his lectures and take notes. I mostly studied mastering and watched YouTube videos bc his lectures sometimes are confusing. Sometimes might go too fast. But he does review sessions, gives bonus questions, and extra credit. You have to work for a good grade.
He's very passionate abt bio, but if u aren't willing to put in an insane amount of work you aren't gonna pass. I will say that this is the first course in highschool and college where I actually had to read every textbook chapter and take notes from it to pass his exams bc the lectures don't cover everything. There are also hard quizzes every tues
Professor Gaines gives very good and interesting lectures and you can tell he is very passionate about what he teaches. However, test questions are very difficult but he knows that and gives a lot of extra credit. There is a lot of homework and you do have to read the textbook. Also, he is always excited to answer questions if you have them.
Really good guy. As a teacher, he's kind of a hardass. Really pay attention in class. Quiz questions seem difficult at first, but reading them carefully will help you a lot. Don't be afraid to put in the work. Extra credit is abundant to make up for the difficulty.
not very helpful and rushes through material without really explaining any of it. avoid taking him if you have the chance.
I cried multiple times a week because of this class. I would try so hard just to get Ds and Cs on the weekly quizzes and the final was extremely difficult. Avoid or your GPA will pay for it
Dr. Gaines is very knowledgable and kind and provides many resources for his students to learn. That being said, I went to every single weekly review session and workshop, studied over 20 hours a week, did the extra-credit assignments and still ended up with a B.
professor gaines is very kind and is definitely passionate about what he teaches but he does not teach well and lectures are extremely fast and heavy. quizzes got a bit easier as the class went on but still were extremely difficult for no reason. final was impossible. basically an mcat. recommend finding old exams to assist with studying.
MUST go to lectures. Took him because he is head of pre-health. Very nice man, very hard professor. He expects a lot from his students; makes exams and quizzes difficult. I went to all the review sessions, really put effort into this course, he gives lots of bonus pts, but ended with a B. Practice exams/quizzes help some; final exam was bad.
This class was unbelievably difficult so don't get your hopes up if you think you're good at Biology. He is an extremely nice man and truly wants to help you; he also gives a lot of bonus points on quizzes/tests. However, if you don't put in the work, you will do horrible in the class.
This class is ridiculously hard, but I never thought I could learn so much in a 1 semester class. Dr. Gaines is an amazing professor and he really cares that his students are learning and thinking critically. The tests and quizzes are very challenging but he does 3 review sessions every week, gives extra-credit and is happy to answer questions.
pls spare yourself and do not take this man!
I've never taken a class even half as hard as this one but Dr. Gaines is a great professor who cares about his students. He makes this class too hard for an intro level course but I can guarantee that no other professor for BIL150 is as experienced or knowledgable as him. While I did not get a good grade, I learned so much I think it will worth it
Dr. Gaines has completely lost his ability to communicate effectively with his students and to teach material in a comprehensive manner. This is because he is becoming senile. He requires that you purchase his book that does not help at all. He also provides a fraction of the material that other professors give. A+ in AP Bio and 5 on exam. STAYAWAY
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. He is the single most difficult professor for BIL 150. He tests extremely hard and has said that some questions were unfair and confusing but will not give points back. His lectures make no sense, I had to teach myself the course. I am a very strong stem student, but this course was hard for no reason, with hours of homework.
You need to put an insane amount of work in to pass this class and it is hard to balance, especially if you're taking CHM121. However, you will come out of it a better student and know how to study effectively for even the hardest exams. Gaines get a bad rep but he's kind and very engaging. You're investing in yourself with this class
Professor Gaines is truly passionate about the material he lectures on and heavily focuses on the pre-med applications of the course. If you are not interested in pre-med studies and do not want to dedicate time to reviewing practice exams and quizzes, this may not be the class for you.
AVOID at ALL cost! He is a nice person, but cannot teach the material effectively. It's time to retire....
INSANELY HARD CLASS! He is an amazing professor and I learned from him but there are so many other professors that have easier classes for the same credit! That being said, he doesn't really care what letter grade you have, he just wants to see you're learning and putting in the effort (good to have a relationship if you're pre-med/pre-health)
DO NOT TAKE EVER. Gaines is the worst professor I've ever had. The only way to do well in his class is to spend more time studying for his class than all of your other classes combined. His tests are full of trick questions, and you have to think like him and have an unrealistic knowledge of each unit if you want to pass. Don't take this class.
I poured so much time and effort into this course, but the exams were so tough and weighted so heavily that it didn't matter. A couple rough tests and you're done, it doesn't matter how well you do in everything else. This class was very educational, I learned a lot, but the grading disappointed me so much.
Try to get another bio professor. If you're not in pre-med, you're screwed because there's no incentive to take this class. The amount of homework he assigns is ridiculous, and the class moves too quickly to pick up any information.
Hard to follow his lectures because he covers so much information in little time. His test questions require tons of attention to detail and knowledge of the most minor things covered in lectures or textbooks. Good guy, but just not a great professor IMO. His class is also pre-med-oriented, so avoid him at all costs if you're not pre-med!!!!!!
If you're looking for an easy A I wouldn't advise taking Gaines's class, but if you're looking to have a deeper understanding of bio and possibly looking into medicine in the future I'd highly recommend. Exams can be hard, but you have many resources available (don't skip review sessions!!) and extra credit. He's an all around kind, passionate guy!
Lecture-heavy classes, lots of assignments, and very difficult tests. He's very smart and covers a lot of information though, and there is some extra credit. His class is pre-med oriented though, so do not take him if you're not pre-med. Overall, cool guy, but he's a very difficult professor.
Hardest class I have ever taken. Unnecessarily hard and this class was more work than all my other classes combined. I wanted to go into the medical field but after this class I changed my whole career path.
Everyone acts like gaines is the most insanely difficult professor. He really isn't. If your a good test taker and put some effort into the class you should be atleast a B. He gives a crazy amount of extra credit, 15-30 per test and 2-4 per quiz. I'm not pre-med and haven't taken a bio class since freshmen year of highscool and found it alright.
Tougher than navy seal training
Esta clase es imposible. El maestro es un viejo loco
just for pre-med
Smooth seas don't make good sailors.
Despite what many reviews would have you believe, prof Gaines' class isn't that bad. It's hard, but with the amount of extra credit that is available, and how much Gaines cares about his students passing, it isn't hard to pass. Lots of lecturing, a quiz every week, and mandatory participation, so if you don't like that kind of stuff, steer clear.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! The tests and class itself are extremely difficult for no reason, and even after giving 20+ points of extra credit on a test people still get 20's and 30's. There was an extreme curve on the final exam,he is not the best at explaining information. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! IT IS NOT AN INTRO BIO LEVEL CLASS EVEN THO IT IS 150,
Avoid at all costs if you're not pre-med because this bio class is way harder than the other ones and is pre-med oriented. He's pretty obviously more of a researcher than a professor and expects students to know as much as he does, which is practically impossible. Test questions also tend to be very difficult though there's some extra credit.
I would not take Gaines again. If you do have to take his class, buy his book and attend lectures. The tests concepts come from that and what he says. All exam questions are applied information and are confusing. He is not understanding and was rude when I asked for help so use other resources instead of his office hours (like peer tutors).
Great professor that actually cares about what he's teaching. People don't like him because the class has a lot of information so you really do have to do all the work and study but as a professor he's great.
Gaines is hysterical and extremely knowledgeable. Integrative med is such a fun course that you learn SO much in since there is a new guest speaker every week. The 2 question quizzes on the long extensive reading every week are unreasonably specific but besides that the class is easy and fun/engaging every single week. Can be a tough grader though
Gaines' class is demanding but rewarding. Attend lectures, use the textbook, and engage with the content. For extra support, try using unstuckstudy AI alongside other study resources. Overall, a tough but worthwhile course.
Do anything in your power to not take this class, this is a general bio class and Gaines make it feel like you are taking Linear Algebra. He goes through the slides with no explanation, and all they have is pictures on it, and you have to know every single little thing(that is not explained). Save yourself.
Gaines is A very caring professor and his pre-health advising's are great way to get to know him and advance your studies. But if you work really hard in the beginning and take advantage of the extra credit you''ll be fine. For exams use Pearson, past exams, and quiz questions.
Just do yourself a favor and do NOT take Gaines, thank me later
Very nice and funny guy, terrible teacher for BIL 150. The exams were difficult, and a lot of the questions were MCAT style. He does provide ample amounts of extra credit, but that's the only reason why I got an A. Gaines would definitely be a better prof for a higher level of bio, but avoid him for BIL 150 at all costs.
This class is not as difficult as others would have you believe. Lots of EC and the exams were easy with lots of repeat questions from reviews, but lots of HW. However, the final was extremely difficult. My mistake in this course was thinking the final would be as easy as the other tests. As long as you study properly you will do well.
Gaines is very knowledgeable but his multiple choice tests are extremely difficult. I would recommend looking at the online quizlets on his tests for the A, but for understanding you will need to put in quite a bit of work.
While he is very knowledgeable about what he is teaching, he's not very good at making sure that you grasp it in the way he expects. He moves quickly on very complicated topics. If you are not pre med, there is zero reason to take him as your BIL150 professor. It's a completely different course than other professors for the same credit.
Do not take if you are not pre-med. He's a pretty funny person and solid professor, but a lot of exam questions are MCAT style and much more difficult than other BIL150 classes.
very hard to understand without additional help. test average D. so much homework. harder than any other prof. mandatory attendance. he is a big name though so if ur premed and not gonna drop out hes a good person to know. cares abt what he teaches but just too hard for a bio 150.
His class is the hardest bio class and it's unfair that the others are an easy A or B. Be prepared to study 8-10 hours a week outside of class and still get a C on the test. Withdrew from this class because it's so painful. Questions are all application/MCAT style. He is a teddy bear and sweet guy, but do everything in ur power not to take him.
Gaines is a very passionate professor who genuinely cares about his students and their success. His class is harder than many of the other BIL 150 courses, as he goes more in-depth. It is not too hard to get good scores; you just have to be ready to study. There are also weekly quizzes, which are somewhat difficult, but are helpful for tests.
Yes, his exams are difficult but these ratings undermine the opportunities he gives his students to succeed. He offers optional assignments for a grade boost, adds extra questions to exams/quizzes for extra points, allows the drop of one exam, and has a lot of work in the grade book. It's up to the students to take advantage of his generosity.
his lectures are not very focused on the topics. he derails a little bit with references to movies and quotes which might make it confusing. sometimes it feels as if he is unsure of what he is teaching and it is very discouraging as a student to feel confident in knowing the contents of the course.
If you get stuck with Gaines for BIO150 immediately switch classes or lose hope before the semester begins.
Gaines gets too much hate. While it's true that he is not the easiest BIL150 teacher, the class is not nearly as impossible as people make it out to be. He offers SO much extra credit. There's optional assignments ab every week, apx 2-3extra credit questions on quizzes, and apx 10extra credit points available on each test. Pay attention, ur fine.
Please take literally anyone else, I felt the most stupid i've ever felt. Sure he offers a TON of extra credit, but I was literally just riding the extra credit. Exams are not at all what is reflected in the lectures or homework. He lectures terribly, getting off track and not explaining things. His lecture slides are just pictures, no words.
This course is a little tough but he genuinely cares and as long as you go to the lectures and do well on the quizzes you will be fine.
