Very helpful and fair. Class isn't a cakewalk, but if you apply yourself and ask questions you'll do fine. If you are any fan of history look for Dr. Galgano.
Great Prof. He'll help you and encourage you the whole time. Do work, stay on top of it, this class will help your writing make leaps and bounds. Get used to having everyone know you as that guy from the library
History Majors: take his 395 class, you won't regret it. Helpful and understanding, very smart.
he's willingly to help anyone, personable and knowledgable, worth taking any of his classes
He is the nicest man ever! He is so knowledgeable about history it almost makes me sick. Definitely take his class because he knows what he is talking about...and you gotta love his bow tie outfit everyday, its adorable.
Best teacher i have ever had! try to get into his class, you will love it!
Excellent professor-loves to teach- inspiring!
He will keep you entertained in class and those bow ties he wears are so cute!...You have to do three papers and two exams plus a cumulative final but its not that bad and he is an excellent professor!
One of the best history teachers I've ever had. I learned more about studying history in this class than I have in any other. He gives helpful advice and treats you like an adult.
Really good teacher! His class is the most interesting class I have ever taken, He loves teaching and you will love learning! Definitly take him!
Truly, Galgano is a peerless instructor. Take any course and you will certainly not be disapointed. His knowledge of English history is so vast, that it borders on precognition.
Unpleasant.
Its hard not to respect this man because he knows everything about history and is willing to share it. Be prepared to work REAL hard on a research paper (long one too....).
He knows his stuff, and can answer questions on even the most minute details of British history. A bit boring to listen to, if you're not into history. (cracking up at that spiderman reference)
Good Prof. Will answer any question fully. Mumbles some! Hard Grader but will always check your paper for you.
He is a great lecturer and really knows the materials. He is very helpful in office hours and a very down to earth, knowledgable guy. Enjoy his class!

Galgano knows everything you could ever want to know about European history. His lectures are never boring and he has a great sense of humor. While his papers and tests are hard (hope you like identifications), if you get through this class you'll feel it was worth it.
Galgano rules! So nice and helpful! Tests are pretty comprehensive, but not too difficult. 3 papers are required but arent hard either. Definately take him!
This class is hard, but Galgano makes it enjoyable! Not too strict on turning in assignments...pretty easy grader. If you have to take this class, Galgano is the BEST!
he is the best teacher at JMU hands down. he is unstoppable! he knows everything and communicates so very well that you get an understanding for what he is trying to say even if you have fallen asleep! good experience here.
I absolutely love this man. He is so helpful and nice and a pretty easy grader considering he's the head of the history department. Nobody can make 395 enjoyable but he at least makes it bearable. He's an adorable man with cool bow ties and by far my favorite professor at JMU.
I love Professor Galgano!! Makes a boring class interesting, and is very willing to help you with any problems. The best professor I have ever had, by far.
Department head! But don't let that scare you. Lectures are fascinating, relates material to every day examples, as any good interpreter of history would do. Brings out some historical nerdiness in you.
Awesome teacher. I made the mistake of waiting to do all the identification lists on the night before the test--they're long, so get a headstart on them, but basically everything on the exams come from them. Really knowledgable, and despite his mediocre French accent (I'm a French minor lol) he's a really great prof, take him!!!!!
BOWTIES...Galgano is awesome. He just stands there and lectures but he is a really good professor. He knows so much about European History. My friends are in his 395 class and love him to. No lying kind of a tough grader but it's college. Recommend highly.
Galgano's class is as stated before on the more dificult side for a 200 lvl. But he expects the best out of everyone. There are 3 tests, 3 papers, and participation/attendence. There are a lot of terms to know, but you can kind of figure out what he wants you know about them.
395 enough said. dr. galgano was the most helpful professor I have had at JMU and he def. makes this class bearable. if you have to suffer throught this class then take galgano. you won't regret it
I had a bad experience with Galgano. His class is interesting at times, but an insanley tough grader. Snubs in the halls, and isn't really helpful when you ask for it. I went to his office was told my paper was fine and got a bad grade on it. I would stay away if possible.
I had Dr G for 3 classes and thought he was awesome. He loves it when students approach him with questions and show an interest. 200 levels require alot of test preparation but the exams are always straight forward. You can tell he wants everyone to do well.
Dr. Galgano makes the 200 level European class into a very challenging class, on par with the 400 level history courses I was taking during the semester. To his credit, he is a fantastic orator, explains things well, but if you sit in the back he has a tendency to be inaudible at times. Tough grader, not the most outreaching professor I've had.
Galgano is awesome. Whenever you have to take 395, definitely take it with him. He makes that class much more bearable, plus his bowties and jokes/comments on the world are ridiculous. Galgano knows an astounding amount of information about history, sources, and anything else you need for 395, plus it doesn't hurt to get to know the dept. head.
Dr. Galgano was the best professor I've had at JMU so far. Your active participation in class will go a long way with him and he will appreciate you for it. If you're taking 395, take it with Dr. G; he is ridiculously knowledgeable and extremely helpful when it comes to research assistance. I've never had such a dedicated professor!
Very hard tests no matter how much you study. Unrealistic expectations of students. Lots of reading. Unwilling to admit fault when the class mean is 9/20 on a test. Avoid.
I agree with the reviewer below, Galgano is simply arrogant and unwilling to think about how he affects his students. Although I have a B+ , I would avoid him, because of his attitude and the amount of work this is for a 100 level course. Daily hw assignments and lecture is simply a review of the textbook.
avoid at all cost!!! I'm an Honors student and still found this class to be impossible. I've read all the assigned readings, went to class and studied for more than 6 hours for each test and barely got a B- on each. He is a nice person but has unrealistic expectations for a GenEd class.
This was the hardest and most work I put into a gened at JMU. Galgano seems nice but his class is absolutely impossible, avoid at all costs
So much work for a gened. Ontop of that the tests were incredibly hard no matter how much I studied. For the final exam multiple choice we had to get 20/20 or we'd get a "0." I for one failed as even that portion of the test was difficult. Overall he's a nice guy though.
GHIST150. He lectures for 1 12 about content he could have explained in 10 minutes. The first class we listened to his presentation about the definition of population. Then, we spent an entire class listening about how to write a bibliography. The next class we spent listening about how to write a book review using summary and evaluation.
he was great!
A great teacher. class can be boring from his long lectures but the final project can be very fun if you choose what you're passionate about!
The class may feel long, but he always has something interesting to say. He is a teacher who wants students to grow and learn from the class. You have lots of little assignments to boost your grade and he is so helpful with everything. Gives good feedback. Pick a good topic for you paper and you'll have fun!
Galgano is an amazing professor. He is so unbelievably knowledgeable and truly believes that the professor and student are equal. He loves when the students challenge him. No tests besides midterm and final exam and both are take home. There is only a long paper that is a big part of your grade. Definitely one of the easier gen eds for cluster 1.
One of the best professors I've had at JMU. Honestly he is so respectful and helpful towards students and treats you as his equal. Only 2 tests, midterm and final which are both take home, and one paper that you have the entire semester to work on. Easy gen-ed.
The class is not really difficult and the only reason lectures needed to be attended is for the participation grade. There isn't really much teaching going on and there isn't a strict rubric any of his grading. Midterm and final are take home but require time to complete. whole semester is basically writing a term paper, do not procrastinate.
Really sweet guy, lectures can be pretty boring, but if you make it a point to participate in class you might actually enjoy it. Only work is a midterm, final, and research paper which are all take home, but are pretty lengthy. He also does reading assignments weekly which aren't too bad.
I wanted to take time out of my day to complete the review for the worst professor i have ever had. His monotone voice puts you to sleep while he spews irrelevant information. He keeps your grade at an A (as long as you have done the homework, which are long and daily) then the final and oral presentation which are dumb, he grades way too hard.
Galgano is a really nice guy, the class just takes a decent amount of effort. If you put in the time then your grade will reflect that. Everything is pretty much done online, daily assignments, midterm and final, and the term paper.
When I'm lying in bed at night trying to go to sleep, I just picture his monotone voice in my head and I'm asleep in seconds.
I really enjoyed Prof. Galgano's Class. One outside novel with small daily assignments and a term paper that you could choose the topic under a general genre. Galgano encourages participation, but it benefits you in the end! He is very helpful, but you have to initiate getting help, and he wants you to succeed.
He is not a nice man. He assigned 10-page papers on a midterm and final week. I didn't have time to study for midterm and final. He is very inconsiderate and stubborn person. You probably seek for another professor. The amount of work is the same as 300 or 400 geneds classes. Not everyone got an A for this class. Not everyone get an A in this class
Do not take this class unless you want to waste an unnecessary amount of time on an entirely too large work load. A Gen Ed class should not be as stressful as this one. All of the classes are solely listening to him talk (because after all, he knows everything there is to know). 0/10 would not recommend. Save yourself.
Dr. Galgano is a nice guy but this class was awful. The book we read was terrible, the paper assignment was unclear and graded harshly, and the amount of work needed for this class will take up a large majority of your time. If you are taking this for a gened, save yourself and take something else. I REALLY wish I had.
Professor Galgano is my favorite professor at JMU! He wants you to succeed and is willing to help you as much as possible! If you do your work and put in the effort you will do just fine in this class. He is a fantastic guy who created the class 395 so he knows the ends and out of the class! TAKE HIM!
Save yourself the time & trouble & do NOT take this gen-ed. It was so much unnecessary work that all felt like a waste of time. There is a 10 page research paper that he is extremely picky & harsh about, as well as 2 online exams that take DAYS to complete & even those are not easy As. The lectures are extremely boring as well. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
Fall'14. Could have gotten an A without going to class. Focused on reading about global overpopulation (somewhat interesting but overkill; we spent the entire semester analyzing a book about this) and How to Write a Research Paper (helpful). Friendly man but lectures were incredibly boring. Easy class. Final paper was straight-forward but 12 pages.
Professor Galgano isn't bad, but the course is a little more than expected for a gened. There are frequent daily assignments of a novel, a midterm and final based off of those, and a long research paper throughout the course. My high school required me to do a similar paper so I just turned that in, but it would have been a lot of work otherwise.
Prof Galgano was an excellent professor. At some points, he could be a little strict, but as long as you put solid work into your assignments (.. and don't fall asleep in class!) He'll see that you actually want to succeed in his class and give you lenient gradings!
To clarify, I enrolled in Galgano's study abroad program in Paris and Normandy, France. The trip was breathtaking and I loved getting to know Professor Galgano and his wife. He did give us a bunch of easy, interpretive writing assignments. Professor Galgano is a great man, though, and everyone should take the opportunity to meet him!
HIST 150 is an easy gen ed with minimal effort. Only one 10(ish) page paper. The first half of the semester are short 1 paragraph responses to the chapters in the book he assigns. His lectures are somewhat interesting, but my class was dull so it was hard to pay attention at times. Somewhat of a picky grader.
For a GenEd this class was way too hard. He assigns at least 40 pages of homework a night (textbook, articles, etc) and tests on information not covered in class. If you miss lectures in class youre screwed. His powerpoints are mostly pictures with little information, most notetaking comes from what he says. Be prepared to do a ton of work and cry.
This class isn't difficult at all as long as you actually show up to class and are able to grasp simple ideas. You write two papers the whole semester and i don't know anyone who has gotten below a C on them. The tests aren't that bad either, but they aren't multiple choice. Please do the readings because he loves to talk about them and they help
Galgano is a nice guy. Be prepared to read a lot and be tested on things outside of lecture. Lectures can be pretty boring but if you understand what is going on it can be kind of interesting. Easy grader for the most part on tests and can be pretty funny in lectures. Overall a gen ed that is boring but easy.
His lectures are a bit boring; however, if you read the textbook well and go to class you will pass. His tests are not that hard if you read the chapters and the articles he hands out.
His lectures can be a bit dry but he is honeslty a great professor who knows his stuff. Make sure you like to read because there is a lot of it. 2 papers, 2 test and 1 final.
He's one of my favorite professors, and one of the nicest. If you go in for office hours with questions about a paper, he's very friendly and helpful. He's also very understanding about missing deadlines/classes as long as you have a valid excuse, and does his best to be available to you so that you can succeed in class.
Professor Galgano is one of the nicest professors I've ever met. He's really helpful and his comments are really thorough. He also makes himself very available for helping anyone during office hours. It's a very good class, a little dry but very necessary.
Professor Galgano is literally one of the nicest professors ever!!!! His class can get pretty boring but he grades really easy, and all the assignments are straight forward. Theres a take home midterm and final also!!! Def take it
The entire syllabus is laid out at the beginning of the semester and this is a good class to take if you don't take test well because there aren't any. However you write a lot, for midterm and final and term paper. Short homework assignments, nice teacher. You really need to participate. I never read.
don't sit in the back because he basically whispers. the daily assignments are pretty easy but the midterm and final, although take home, are way too long and are just unnecessary amounts of busy work. his lectures are extremely boring for the most part. participation is really important. I would definitely try to find another class to take instead
Galgano is such a good-hearted guy! His lectures tend to be a little boring and repetitive but he makes it an open discussion to everyone so if you participate, it's not bad. There's one book we study throughout the semester and a research paper. Midterm and final are very lengthy but also very doable if you don't wait until the last minute.
Galgano is an amazing prof! He gives great feedback on all assignments. He gives daily homework, but they're fairly easy, as well as the midterm and final (long, but take home). I recommend him to anyone. He cares about his students, he will help you with anything, and he is always so happy when you go to his office hours. Participate in class, too
Professor Galgano wasn't the worst professor I've had. His lectures are VERY BORING and made me fall asleep sometimes. If you don't show up and participate, then you won't pass. Midterm and finals were both take home, which I liked but his directions are very unclear. He is a confusing professor because he is never clear with what he wants.
This class wasn't too bad. His lectures are very boring but he's very helpful and cares about his students. There's a decent amount of reading and he tests on a lot of stuff outside of class. Theres only a midterm and a final but if you don't read the textbook they can be hard. There are 2 papers and he's an easy grader for the most part!
Professor Galgano really cares about his students and gives you lots of chances to succeed. You have 2 papers (You get a choice of prompts), 2 tests, and extra grade boosting assignments. The tests are honestly a big workload but there's a huge take home part that counts for a good amount of the overall score. Not the easiest A, but very possible.
Amazing professor! Gives clear constructive feedback on all assignments. His expectations are clear as well and not difficult to meet! If youre going to take HIST 395, I highly recommend him. If you put in the effort and go to his office hours then passing with a B or better is guaranteed.
Honestly, a solid choice for a gen ed, and a really interesting class. I can't say that Galgano is the most exciting, engaging professor you will find though. It's not even his personality as much as his voice. His voice is really calm and relaxing which can put you to sleep early in the morning. However, this was a really good class!!!!!
Exams are entirely short answer, impossible, and makes you read the textbook like it's your day job. I can't explain how many times I couldn't stay awake in this guys class. Graded by very few things. NO!!!!!
He is incredibly boring, and monotoned. His daily assignments are easy but his exams are impossible. It is all long answers, you have no clue what hes going to ask, and the only insight to the exam is that you need to read every page of the book. It seems easy enough but you have to read 40 pages for each class
Let me save you some time while picking classes. Do not take this class if you think it's going to be an easy gen ed. Lectures are very boring and teach barely anything. When you ask questions, he doesnt answer them straight up. Nice guy but makes this class harder than it needs to be. Get ready to put in the time.
Galgano is a nice man but having this class bright an early at 8am is rough. He has a super monotone voice so staying alert can be difficult. As a gen ed this class is wayyyy to hard. His tests are basically two large tests some take home and some in class. Again a nice man but I would never take this class again.
