I took this class my freshman year in spring of 2011. If you can get past the "tough-guy" act, you can see that Garcia class is interesting. TAKE EXCELLENT NOTES. The book isn't necessary, so don't bother. Tests are hard, but there's a generous "curve" since lots of people tend to struggle. Try to beat the average (~60's on tests).
Hilarious. Hard. Interesting. Book NOT needed!!
cool teacher.
Good teacher.
Pretty interesting teacher
Very interesting teacher. Comical and helpful.
Keeps it interesting with his humor. Tough material he likes to challenge you.
Booyah for extra credit!
Very funny guy, enjoys a good laugh.
Loves a good laugh and is very scarcastic. It is a hard class but you must take it as a bio major. Study hard and you'll get through it. If you made it to this point your doing well so far
Awesome guy. Really funny and helpful. Makes class fun and interesting
He's funny , but stern. Make sure to listen up and take notes.
Very good at lecturing. Attend office hours to do well in class.
Interesting professor and class. Pretty funny at times.
really interesting man. class time is definitely engaging, but u'll have to take ur own adequate notes
funny, but not easy. He likes chili peppers on rate my professor.
challenging course
he's a smartass. rating him as hot for extra credit.
interesting class
Go to class take GOOD notes. Rate him for some bonus points.
Hi, Dr. Garcia is a cool teacher!
... He is definitely a character!
Keep up with lectures!
tough guy attitude but interesting lecturer, don't buy the book, just take good notes during lecture
Dr. Garcia is great! Very interesting lecturer!
Professor Garcia rocks!
Interesting to listen to. You really have to think on the tests.
Interesting to listen to
Garcia is the BEST!
He is not very nice at times and sometimes he will answer your questions...sometimes he will not.
Garcia is the BEST!!!!
Good teacher and straight forward about the information
Garcia. What a guy!
Dr. Garcia is AWESOME!
Great!
Garcia is awesome!
Good professor, interesting exams
Attend class; study your lecture notes; ask questions when you have them; pretty straightforward course
great
interesting
The best bio professor I've ever had!
Interesting class, pay attention and take good notes. If you don't get it, go to office hours.
Ask tons of questions until you fully understand the concept. The tests are based on using the information you know instead of memorization. If you simply memorize material, you will fail.
Overall great teacher
Ask questions and work to understand the concepts instead of memorizing. Makes you think instead of just remembering. Great professor who creates an entertaining classroom dynamic.
His tests are hard but he curves it so its not that bad
Have to understand concepts rather than memorizing notes...don't bother buying textbook!
Test are really hard, but if you literally write down everything he says and study the notes a week in advance, you will be fine, there is a big curve
Funny Professor. Just like all other classes, must work hard and know material.
Overall Great teacher, very hard tests but has a nice curve. Must go to class and take excellent notes and really understand the material not just memorize it.
Tough but cares that you do well and earn your grade.
Not an easy class, but he is always available to answer questions
Good teacher. Keeps the lecture very interesting and is treats us all like the adults we should be treated as.
He's a good teacher but very hard study and you will do well
Interesting class, nice curve. Go to class or you will fall behind.
I love the class, he is great.
Go to class and office houres
He is a great teacher, but beware of his "jokes"
GO TO CLASS!! ask questions if you're unsure of anything. I like his teaching style. He tends to talk fast so compare notes with someone after class. Don't buy the book.
Pay attention in class, go to office hours.
make sure you go to class everyday! Go to his office hours from the start of the semester.
Funny guy. Makes fun of you whether your right or wrong which sort of takes the tension off if you are wrong. I'm calling BS on the textbook thing though. I have found that it helps bring everything together. I saw him working out at the Rec a lot, homie's got nice pec's!
Good guy, seems to genuinely care about students doing well. Willing to answer any questions and offer help at office hours. Funny guy too
Seems like a good guy. Genuinely cares about students learning. Will answer any questions and offer help at office hours. Funny guy too.
Favorite BIO class thus far
Go to class, take notes, ask questions, and go to his office hours.
He says it how it is. You actually obtain and learn information every class. His lectures are more like comedy hour with some biology thrown in the mix.
Fantastic teacher. Truly cares about student leaning and very available for helping each individual succeed if they want to and have the drive. One f my favorite professors here.
Very entertaining and interested in student learning. Only complaint is that he gave a practice test for the first exam but wouldn't discuss the answers so it was not very helpful.
He was great!
He is a good teacher and presents his material very clearly.
Fun professor with interesting lectures.
This a difficult class, need to take it seriously. Ask questions, go to office hours and DON'T Memomorize
Very fun professor! Important to go to lecture everyday
Very sarcastic which I liked. Honest in his opinions of what you need to know. I was genuinely interested in what he had to say.
Good lectures and excellent teaching. Can be intimidating at first, but encourages to ask questions and tests for actual understanding of material.
Good lectures and excellent teaching. Can be intimidating at first but encourages you to ask questions to have a FULL comprehensive understanding of the material.
good guy, funny
NEED to go to lecture and NEED to go to office hours.
Going to make you earn your grade
This class is very interesting.
need to go to every lecture and office hours to fully understand everything. the exams will make you cry.
I enjoy the lectures; he definitely keeps them interesting and explains things well. If you work hard and seek help instead of thinking it will just come to you, you should do well
Garcia's classes are both informative and entertaining.
Go to lecture, really pay attention. You never know what he will pull on the test! Really need to understand what he is teaching you.
Good professor. Funny.
Great teacher. Very clear and helpful.
You have to go to lectures and office hours to understand material. His tests are ridiculously hard but there's a curve. He doesn't seem to care much about his students.
Go to lecture whatever you do, he is very informative and helpful.
great professor, funny in class and helpful as well
Knowledgable guy but the class is pretty hard. Prepare to work.
He is very funny! Very hard teacher though and will make you work hard.
Ask questions and DON'T Memorize!
Don't be scared to ask for help when you really need it. He will try to help however he can.
I absolutely despise going to this class, it's the worst hour of my day. I went to his office hours but they werent helpful. He talks to fast and if you ask him to repeat something he will sarcastically repeat back the few words you said. I honestly can't wait until I'm done with this class and never have to deal with him again. Stay away.
Is a tough teacher, but makes each class extremely interesting and funny.
This Cell Bio Connoisseur only enhances his charm with his sassy commentary that elevates his class to the entertainment level of SNL.
Dr. Garcia is the pinnacle of Latino intelligence in the biological field! The combination of his powerhouse level of knowledge combined with the driest of dark humor make the class enjoyable to attend.
Professor Garcia--a doctor of Biology, a captain of industry, and a king among men.
This guy makes his class interesting. He tries to be funny but overdoes sometimes. All in all, great class.
If you took the looks of Enrique Iglesias, the funniness of Will Ferrell, and the brain of Albert Einstein and then fused it all into one superhuman person, the result would be Dr. Garcia. What else would you want in a professor besides hotness, funnies, and brains?
Dr Garcia makes his class extremely entertaining and fun to go to!
This class should be renamed Cell Biology - Marine Corps Style. He insults you to break you down so that you can feel better about yourself when you do something right (which isn't very often!) Fun class!
What I have learned from Garcia thus far: Don't raise your hand.
This guy, is the bee's knees. The cat's pajamas. He does with Cell Biology what Da Vinci did with the Renaissance, makes it his... being of lesser value. He dominates this field like the Seahawks dominated the Broncos in the Super Bowl. To top it all off, he does it better than a comedy routine by Gabriela Iglesias.
There are truly no words to describe how much of a genius this man truly is. He is brilliant, dresses like a Greek God, and keeps the laughter coming in class. His class is A1 like the steak sauce. There will never be a dull moment. Who knew learning about biology could be so fun? I dare you not to have him as a teacher.
Mr. Garcia is like a catalyst. He increases the speed of which I learn. His lectures are very informative, insightful, and I am grateful that I have him as my Biology professor. For all he does, he should demand more... but like a neutron, he has no charge.
He is so interesting I could sit there for 2 hrs listening to him read the dictionary.
Dr. Garcia is hilarious! If you need a dose of laughter, his class is the place to go. Not to mention his wonderful sense of style. Enough said!
One of a kind professor.
Dr. Garcia... SO fly
Good teacher. Teaches well.
Dr. Garcia is the best professor I've ever had!
If you have to take this class, take it with Dr. Garcia. Your life isn't complete without him in it. Go ahead. Take my word and sign up for HIS class. It'll be your best decision yet.
Dr. Garcia is like a younger, more distinguished version of George Lopez.
gud stuf
If you want accurate information about him, look for posts made after the beginning of the semester. (e.g., after the beginning Feb 2014); i.e., after the first test. He bribes students with extra credit to give him a good rating BEFORE the first test. Some decisions, such as changing test dates, are hugely unfair to the majority of students.
Tests are ridiculously hard. He deliberately tries trip up students. He can be extremely rude to students if they annoy him. He doesn't mind embarrassing students in class.
He was an interesting teacher. He kept me engaged. Although attendance isn't mandatory, I would recommend going every day. I wouldn't trust that you'll be able to understand someone else's notes. He goes completely off lecture. If you can get ahold of old tests, that would sufficiently help you. Garcia is a teacher you should really get to know.
Took this class after receiving a W in Dr. Zhang's class the prior semester. On that note, AVOID DR. ZHANG AT ALL COSTS. Dr. Garcia is the absolute funniest teacher I have ever had. His lectures are very informative and he won't move on until everyone understands. He encourages you to ask questions and is available for additional help through email
Tests were difficult, but he was funny and good at lecturing
One of my favorite professors I've had. Going to class is like going to a comedy show. This guy is hilarious! The jokes he tells are all relevant to the material and help tremendously in remembering it. My TA, Scott, was also very helpful and nice. Great professor overall! Definitely my favorite Bio class I've taken, probably due to him teaching.
Worst teacher ever. Only class I have ever failed in my life. Insults students. Friend had to sue him. The worst. He begged some of his students to rate him positively on this site, so beware of the nonsense.
He is very used to joking with his students. On the anniversary of my best friend's death I had this class. He tried joking with me several times & he could tell that this made me really upset (I was in a bad place and did not want to have to engage in class) after class he pulled me aside to be supportive. It was really genuine.
Considering this class was at the capstone level, he was the most amazing professor I've ever had. Honestly understood that we're busy seniors and made my life a lot easier. The class definitely lived up to expectation material wise; I learned about what I was interested in just for the enjoyment of learning it for once.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. His exams are complete nonsense. Study all the notes? Doesn't matter. He doesn't record lectures or go off powerpoint slides so good luck. He's funny, for sure, but he wastes so much class time just trying to be amusing. His exams are based on hypothesis and if you don't know tiny little details, good luck! RIP
Avoid this professor if possible. Exams are difficult and unnecessarily strange and confusing. He tries to use a movie plot as a framing mechanism for his exams, and he ends up getting more in depth in the narrative portion of the exam than he does in actually giving useful information to answer the question. Take different prof if possible!
Had bio 2300 with Dr. Garcia. Although I did well in his class, I found his personality to be very rude and off putting. He regularly mocked and made fun of students in class. His officer hours werent any better. He regularly mocked students questions and didnt foster an environment conducive to learning. Best way I can describe him is jerk
This class is insanely hard, but Garcia knows that. His curve involves taking the average for the exam, adding the standard deviation and thats max score for the exam. Don't be scared if you have him. YOU MUST GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Literally once he knows your name and a little about you, he's great. He will make fun of his favorite students in class
100 weekly quizzes+400 reading quizzes+500 tests (5)1000 (.7*lecture)*(.3*lab)grade. The hypothesis questions he puts on the end of quizzes and the tests are incomprehensible. At the end of the semester I still had no clue how to answer the questions on his tests. I knew the information well for tests and still did bad. He does "curve" each test.
The teacher was unapproachable for any type of question. The tests are non-descriptive and based on movies. His curves can be nice unless you are average because he grades based on the standard deviation. My year he dropped the final test and averaged the other 4 tests for the 5th test score. The teacher also comes off as rude and impatient.
This class is hard as well as the exams. However, the weekly quizzes that are offered help you prepare for the exams. Don't let yourself fall behind and go to office hours frequently. I studied maybe 1-2 days before each exam and still ended up receiving over 100% after the curve. It's a doable class, you just need to put the work in.
Generally rude, other than with his favorite girls. Brags about only looking over slides 5min before lecture. Consistently stated "What is impactful to you, will not be impactful to me" and "I will NOT remember you". Huge ego& belittles you. Talked about getting drunk during class/OH. Interesting content but can't stand this guy. Academia's worst
Dr. Garcia is the professor version of Dr. House. He leans into his poor reviews, making people think he is a horrible professor. In reality, Garcia cares about his students and wants them to learn and be successful. (class avg 3.4) If you actually want to learn and be successful, you should take his course, but you NEED to go to office hours.
This professor was rude and condescending. He basically just told everyone that they were not going to make it into medical school without taking his class and then proceeded to take most class periods talking about drinking and his love for spiders. He only favored you if you went to office hours, and curved the grades favoring those who did.
My biggest advice: - don't let him intimidate you at the beginning, you'll fail before you do well - don't worry too much about your grade, he curves majorly - go. to. office. hours. regularly. - make sure you have adequate time to dedicate to this class - utilize his accommodations, he's very respectful of them! - don't take him too serious
Professor can be blunt, but go to office hours - he'll remember you and be more helpful. Utilize Unstuck AI and the free textbook to stay on top of this challenging course. Worth the effort for the generous curve.
Constantly said: "I don't care about your opinion, I don't care what you think is fair, I will not remember you." Talked down to students he didn't like, curves heavily for his favorites. Office hours are important but he is very vague don't expect actual answers. He makes you take "hypothesis elimination" quizzes every week that most people fail.
He is extremely rude and condescending to students in a way he poorly attempts to disguise as humor, and bad at teaching. He constantly rants during lectures and draws illegibly on the chalkboard instead of using his slides. Be ready to commit a lot of time to teaching yourself the material, and you will be fine, but it will not be a fun semester.
He rarely teaches anymore, but if you end up seeing him teaching a class. I would say run. He is absolutely hilarious, but his exams are literally an LSD trip. Study the Taco Bell menu more than the lectures. Had to fight demons for my grade. Told him I had ADHD & Dyslexia during office hours and he said “DAYUMN'
