Lecture is based off readings and his own industry exp. Tests are combo of lecture and reading but tests are very straightforward and not wordy.
He is clear about what he wants from student. read the book. and he secretly score your attendance on his paper. He maybe the nicest professor on hospitality law classes. student who took HMD402 last semester, definately chose him again for HMD401 on next semester.
It was hard to pass, things a lot to do.. and.. boring lecture.. Difficult law class.. Attedence mandatory.
This law class is a breeze compared to the other sections. He has a LOT of experience not just in the practice of law but in law enforcement as well. Many relatable stories and tests you on only the concepts he greatly stresses in class. It can be boring but read the book and it will be an easy law class.
Easy class. But he does not follow the grading rubric at all. Only posted three test scores and ignored attendance and group projects.
Take your text book and do the work. Study your notes so take really good notes. Enjoyed his class and he made law understanding and applicable.
This professor is a little difficult. You must attend class and you must read the book. He gave a couple pop quizzes over the previous notes. A few exams that are a bit tricky, he doesn't ask simple questions. The project was to create an employee handbook.
If you're reading this looking for a law professor, just click back over to myunlv and take Gebhart's class! Ya, it can be slightly tough, especially because of the reading, but that's because it's an important class. You can get sued for millions for anything out there. He has lots of experience and is witty, drawing you into every lecture. 1010
Just read the book and participate the class, you will be fine. He's kinda lazy so he may not give you the pop quiz as he said, but we have presentation and assignment during the semester. Also, attendance is really important.
Good professor. Grade based on exams, which are fair, and he considers attendance & presentations as a way to bump your grade. Had I studied a bit more and gotten A's on the exams, I could've skipped the final. He has experience and interesting stories. Not sure another reviewer would complain he didn't give the pop quizzes he mentioned lol.
An interesting class & funny professor. Attendance matters & you must read the book. Overall I liked the class but the exams are tough (mutl. choice & short answers). I thought I did well on the exams but the grade came out to be a lot lower than I'd expected & I STUDIED. Not sure what hes looking for since he keeps all the exams.
His class is so tough! The tests are mostly essay questions and they are crazy difficult! Avoid this class if you can!
Great Professor. One of the very best at UNLV!
Tests are tough and comprise almost your entire grade but Gebhart is a super awesome teacher, gives exciting lectures, not a lot of homework. If you're going to take Hospitality Law, take Gebhart he's fantastic. I wont take a Hosp. Law class from another professor.
During classes he will say what is on the tests. He asks you to read each chapter before class but he doesn't give any pop quizzes. He likes participation, and you get 20 extra points if you attend every class. If you miss a class he deducts 3 points, and he takes attendance every class. Great teacher!
His class is tough, but he makes his lectures interesting and funny. Tests are tough, but if you read the material, it's not too bad. Overall, great teacher. I will take him again for HMD 402 if possible.
Hands down, the best professor in Hotel. He is tough, fair, and makes you take responsibility. But, the class is fun and full of laughs. I learned more in one semester than I have in 3 years at UNLV.
I had Gebhart for 401 and 402. He is a fantastic professor. There is no better professor in Hospitality. He knows his stuff and his classes are fun yet challenging.
His class is very tough! tests are hard!
Professor Gebhart is the my favorite professor. He makes the class extremely fun. As long as you read, show up to class, and participate in lectures, you will be fine. Get A's on both exams and you can skip the final.
Professor Gebhart is very good at explaining the topics in Hospitality Law; so good that sometimes his lectures become too long and boring. However, participation is very important. His grading criteria is based on three test and participation. In order to participate you have to read the textbook (which is a little expensive).
He is a great person. super smart. you will definitely learn a lot in this class. he is a hard grader. you must participate in class he loves calling on people. I will take him again he is very knowledgeable.
Awesome Professor! Super knowledgeable on the material and really wants his students to learn. Mandatory attendance, but he gives 20 extra points on to your grade if you attend every class on time. 3 tests, partially multiple choice and short answers. Go to class, pay attention, participate, and you'll easily pass.
This is one of the toughest, if not the toughest, course in the Hotel College. Gebhart challenges you in the course, but you'll come out truly understanding law. Take great notes- everything in the course was important and mentioned somehow on exams. Exams are tough and can be tricky, but if you know the book and notes, you'll be good.
His lecture is great, and you must to prepare to read the book and take good note during the lecture, and do not ignore any black square part on the book and anything that he mentioned that he will put on the exam. There are only three exams each worth 100 points, and if you have perfect attendance without any late, you will get 20 extra credit.
Took summer course. Excellent professor. Best I have had at UNLV. Very good professor, funny, knows his stuff.
If all professors were like him, then UNLV would be great. His lectures are amazing and he makes sure everyone is involved. Bottom line is you are missing out if you don't get in his class. There is always a very long wait list so you must get in early.
Best professor at UNLV. Took him for 401 also. Wouldn't take any other professor for law. He is very smart, funny, and actually cares about his students and their success. I enjoyed every class. Quite possibly the only professor that actually challenges his students to be prepared. He will call on everyone at some point.
What can I say that hasn't already been said. BEST professor in Hotel. Hands down.
Gebhart is awesome! Come to class, participate, and you'll be fine. Gives extra points at the end of the semester if you come to every class and aren't late. Tests come right from his lectures and from the book. Took him for both 401 and 402! Makes things very easy to understand, always willing to help, definitely recommend!!
Professor Gebhart not only is a professor that still works in the industry, but uses a lot of his experiences as examples for the text we read. So long as you are on time to his class, read all the material, and prepared to share your opinion on the text, this will be one of the best course you can take at UNLV. He's amazing for HMD 401 and 402.
Best professor. Has 3 exams your grade relies on. But! He keeps a big eye on attendance. If he sees from your attendance and participation (answering questions, showing you read the book) he'll boost your grade if he feels you deserve a better one.
One of my favorite professors by far! Although class attendance is required if u want to get extra points, his class is super interesting and easy to pay attention to
He is by far the best professor I've had. You will learn so much. I mean, he still scares me, but he's amazing. Class participation is crucial and you will have to beef up your reading comprehension skills because he expects you to be prepared, but he is caring, fair, and AMAZING. Taking him for 402 & I can't wait. Do the work and you'll be golden.
Took him for 402 and 401. My favorite professor in four years. Smart, funny, and cares about his students. His classes fill up within 1 minute. For good reason.
I have never enjoyed a class so much! It is later in the day but i dont mind because I love the material and the way he teaches. Definitely wish there were more teachers like him at UNLV. Never thought I would like my Law class more than my concentration classes...
Gebhart is very funny. Makes the class very bearable. Just read and come prepared to class. He calls on students every class but this motivated me to be ready and on top of my readings. 2 tests, 1 final. 2 Group presentations that are not graded. Gives extra 20 points for perfect attendance. If you read or study his ppts, you'll pass easily.
I took a class with him in Spring. Taking him again in the Fall. Awesome professor. My favorite at UNLV. He is smart, funny, and engaging. UNLV is lucky to have him. His classes are tough, but better than any other class I've taken. He makes you work and that is actually refreshing. He isn't hard to look at either.
He is really tough. You will have to study hard to pass this class. There are 3 exams. 2 group projects but not graded, just helpful to understand the lectures better. I will tell you one thing, don't miss class, because he gives 20 pts for final grade if you have perfect attendance and that made me pass the class. Very vague on what to study.
Took him for HMD 402 in summer. Excellent professor. I loved his class. Hard work, but he makes sure you learn the law. Not for slackers. Maybe best class I took at UNLV because he really cares if you learn. Refreshing.
my favorite professor at UNLV in four years. His class is fun and he definitely knows his stuff. Come to class prepared, though.
He is a funny guy and his stories are great, but whenever I see him outside of class he ignores me. I feel like he doesnt like saying hi to his students... besides that his class was alright, the course itself is a hard class. A lot of studying required. His looks make up for his somewhat monotone lectures.
If you don't like teachers who randomly pick on you, then he isn't the right professor for you. Attendance is mandatory and group projects. He makes you present as well. He is nice though and many people seem to like him so... its up to you
Gebhart is hands down the best employee law professor at UNLV. Go to class, pay attention, and read A. Also don't miss class, he gives an extra 20 points if you have perfect attendance. Best class I have taken at UNLV.
Owns his own law firm so very proficient in subject he teaches. Funny and knows how to keep you interested. Just participate and interact a lot in class and you will get on his good side. He will pick on you if he catches you sleeping or not paying attention. 4 exams, very straightforward, attendance is mandatory, takes point off if you don't show
Dr. Michael is a great professor and know well in hospitality law. He uses real examples make the class fun and easy to understand. Three exams and if you do well you don't need to take the final. The exams are kinda hard but you learn a lot. He offers 20 pts extra credits. Best professor I ever seen in UNLV.
Mr. Gebhart is a fantastic professor. I enjoyed his 402 class and what makes it even better is that this topic is relevant. This isn't a class whre you will learn material you will never need, Employment Law is incredibly important. I have taken what I've learned to my job that I have now and hopefully my future management positions. luv his class
Ive never enjoyed a class more. Interesting, challenging, fun, and important. He should teach others how to teach. Hes just that good. Take him if you can.
Good guy, gives a ton of examples in class that really help you understand the material. He uses a powerpoint but doesn't really let you see it. Helps because its structured and follows the textbook but you're forced to listen rather than furiously jotting down notes. Would recommend for Hospitality Law classes over all other professors.
Loved this professor, made it interesting to learn law. Your grade is based off your exams but if you attend class you'll get a bonus at the end of the semester. I recommend not skipping.
Took online during Summer 1 (3 weeks). Each day will read text, take M/C quiz, and write paper (3 pgs. dbl. spaced min.). 3 exams (Friday's 1pm-2pm PST, 6 short answer questions). Unless you have 3 hours (at least) each day, don't take this section. Professor is quick with grading. Fast paced and lots of work, but done in 3 weeks so 10/10 recommend
He is unnecessarily difficult to the student, set up obstacles and problems for you to pass the class. He does not care about your schedule and makes the class very inflexible, which is the point of taking an online class. He has set time for the exam and does not care wherever you are at, you have to follow his schedule. He is cold and indifferent
402 over the summer. Fast paced with a lot of reading and papers. He grades fast. It is a whole semester is just a few weeks and he made it clear up front that summer is not just for easy grades so we have to work hard and we did. Test is scheduled to keep some from cheating which is bad that some will do that. Take if you have time to work hard.
I really was looking forward to this class since I've heard great things about this professor, but taking him online was just a bad decision. There is a 3 pg min. writing assignment everyday. You'll probably need to set aside at least 5 hours a day to do the research and complete the papers. Tough grader, not flexible. Be really prepared to do work
Professor Gebhart is the absolute best professor at UNLV. I heard good things about him and enrolled in both of his law classes this semester. I expected it to be good but it is beyond great. He teaches like no other professor I've ever had. He is engaging, funny, and demanding. I finally feel challenged and able to demonstrate my true potential.
In the open ended question you need to write the "exact answer" he said in class instead of the definition of that"exact answer" in your own words.
His lecture is actually very fun. Make sure to take notes, because exam questions are pretty much from the lecture. He talks very quick and a lot, sometimes its a little bit hard to catch up. He is very serious about attendance, so please do not skip class or be late if you want a good grade. You will actually learn a lot from this class!
try to get prepared before each class. Michael like those students who interact him in class. It will be easier for you on midterm and second exam if you participate well in class.
Professor Gebhart is one of the best professors I have taken at UNLV, his classes are fun and interactive and he rewards hard effort: if you get Straight As in only two exams and have perfect attendance you dont have to take the final. This class was definitely the highlight of my semester
Makes you work for your grade, and doesnt hand out As. His experience as a lawyer and past law enforcement help him teach the class. He makes sure that you know the material not just memorize it. He has great stories to tell as well.
My favorite professor in 4 years at UNLV by far. If you can get in his class youre lucky but be prepared to work. Its all worth it though. Best experience in college.
This class over all was great I just hate the professor! Super disrespectful and rude. He has a ridiculous way of checking attendance by marks on a paper next to your name, I never missed or was late to any class but his shotty paper said so and he said that he doesn't make mistakes! I find that absolutely ridiculous! Do not take this professor!!
He is extremely rude. He gives you way to much writing assignment, if you dont do it he takes points off. I did only miss the very first day and he gave me-14 for attendance. If you can do not take him. He is awful do not take his class
Took him Summer 2019. Tough grader and lots of work. But, I learned a lot. You have to write every day. He doesnt allow tardy work and rejects work that is not original.
Literally my favorite teacher ever! He is so amazing. He only offers classes for 1.5 hours and 1 time a week which is perfect but does make you work more. I have worked so hard and learned so much. I wish he could teach every course. His tests are on the harder side but his assignments are not. It is totally doable to pass
I really liked Gebhart! he is very knowledgeable about law and really helps you understand it with his lectures. his tests are really hard, but it you come to class, pay attention in class, do the outside reading, and write good papers, you will pass and not have to take the final!
This professor is the worse UNLV professor I ever meet. There are nothing to help you to learn. The only thing he has is to write down what he tells you to study and never repeats. His research paper 3 page only helps you get half credit. His attendant is ridiculous if you don't show up on the class, he will give you grades like -9/40.
If you like to be late (even a minute), don't take his class. If you don't like to write papers, don't take his class. He is stern and professional and has every right to be. He is knowledgeable.I love how he teaches, he doesn't need slides. Clear grading, he says doing the minimum pages gets an average score, so don't submit him average work.
Hated his class and him. He did not listen to students' opinions at all. Did not show respect to students. The worst professor I have ever had in my college.
Very rude professor. talks down to students as though were stupid . with pandemic and everyone cxl class he sent us email telling us class not cxl and we would be losing point if not attended. Tough grades, no study guides, no power points, just says what he wants then adds to test. regardless of passing i will retake class with abetter professor.
Worst teacher ever, don't show any respect to student at all. Class transit to online due to COVID-19. No material provide to student, only tell student to read the chapter learn by themselves. Final exam lockdown browser+webcam.
Took Gebhart for summer 402. Lots of papers and writing. I learned a lot. Some comments say he is rude and doesn't care about students. Not true. He met with me online whenever i needed him to. If you're lazy or just want a teacher to hand you a grade, then don't take his class. He expects high quality work and reqwards students who put in effort.
Took him summer 2020. Great course and anxious to take him again starting next week. Great professor but makes you work for it.
He makes you work for your grade. I never worked so hard, but I never learned as much from a single class. Great professor.
Third week of semester and he is killing us. So much work. But, weirdly, I am enjoying the challenge. the professor doesn't mess around. He makes very strict rules to follow but I believe he is really trying to make us learn. He said he would and he is right so far.
I enrolled in his class for Fall 2020, and the online transition is a complete nightmare. He requires at least a 3 pages min. paper weekly (you need 5 pages if you want an A). Super tough on grading, deranged on format (he will literally give you negative points), & has a ridiculous expectations of student. Steer away from this class! Trust me.
Homework consisted of one essay with a minimum of 3 pages, but really requires research and thought. Zoom lectures were informative and thought provoking. His experience as a cop and a lawyer in the past combines well to give a matter-of-fact lecture style. Start the essay early and read the book. Make a study group for the test and you should pass
Going into HMD 402 with Professor Gebhart, I was beyond scared. He is very strict on what he expects from students, but its definitely achievable. If you take the time to read the book and do the research needed for the modules, youll pass easily, plus you will actually learn something.
LOTS OF WRITING. He doesnt teach, but rather makes you write 12 5-page essays that only equate to 5 points each. The papers must be done through research and reading the textbook on your own. Zoom class was mandatory with cameras and he calls on people randomly. Claims he wants to be helpful but has a rude demeanor when you ask for it.
The hardest class I've ever taken at UNLV because of the amount of research and essays that had to be written weekly, all at the minimum of 3 pages, but really requiring 5 pages to get full credit. He knows everything about the subject he is teaching and makes the lectures interesting. But be warned. The class is very difficult and time consuming.
I've taken Professor Gebhart for both 401 and 402. People who don't like writing will hate this class, but all the writing assignments are good topics. They help me learn the material, which helps for the short-answer tests. Live Zoom meeting also helps reiterate the main points. lots of work but just follow the rules, its easy A
I will admit, he can have an attitude a rude demeanor at times, but honestly, I feel he is fedup with the subpark work and attitudes students tend to have towards the end of their school career, especially in the hospitality school, things are lax. 12 papers, 3 tests, that is it. As a senior, 5 pages should not be hard!
Summer 2021. Awesome professor. Maybe the best I've ever had at UNLV. He zoomed me whenever I needed it and helped me through the class. I learned more in five weeks that I have in most regular courses. Take him if you can. He's great.
He knows the importance of this class, and that's why he is very strict. He will even deduct points if you do not turn in your homework. (Ex. you do not get 0/10, you get -5/10). his grading in the exam is not clear too. class is graded based on few works so you do not want to miss any of the work. overall, very stressful class I'd say.
Professor Gebhart was wonderful! He can be strict but as long as you do your assigned readings before coming to class, take good notes, and participate during the lectures (he does call on students), you will do well on your exams and papers. He tells you what you should expect/study. Make sure to write 5 pages for papers to receive full credit!
Best Professor I've ever had at UNLV. He requires that you read the textbook chapter before class and wants everyone to participate in the lectures. He is an amazing lecturer, explains everything simply and in depth, and really wants everyone to do well in the class. DO NOT MISS CLASS.
I highly recommend taking Michael's law class in person rather than online. There is less work and papers to write. He wants students to participate and I highly encourage you do as you will learn more in class. Ask questions and answer his questions. He is passionate in Law of Hospitality and the class is practical. Best class I've ever taken.
Professor Gebhart was one of the few professors that I genuinely enjoyed taking their class for. He mentions how he wants all of his students to learn and he truly does. He gives real life examples and gives you all the info you need to know, so take good notes, study the notes, and show up on time! ASK QUESTIONS! He loves students who participate!
Professor Gebhart was very hard to like at first, but I grew an appreciation for him over time. There's no textbook, no online material, and no extra credit. He teaches everything you need to know for your exams in his lectures. There hasn't been a single exam in which I thought, "He didn't teach this in class," because he always prepared us.
Being completely honest, I don't remember a thing from this class. I only learned the material to write a 5-page paper each week cuz if you wrote anything less, you were not given full credit regardless of how ogod the content was. If you don't manage your time well, do not take this class online. I can't speak for his in-person class though.
Professor Gebhart is excellent. I also took him for 205. Don't listen to the complainers. He is tough, but fair. Law is not easy, but he makes it very interesting. Yes, there are papers to write and he has very high standards. But, if you do the work and put in the effort you will do well. He gives me all the feedback I need.
I actually had him for 205, summer session web-based. This class is a huge time commitment, and you will end up doing a lot of independent research since a lot of the information you need to know is not in the material provided. However, I really did leave this class with a strong understanding of the subject, and he was a fair grader.
Man this guy is badass. Makes the class pretty entertaining and I learned a ton of hospitality law. He will call on you randomly so be up to date with reading the required material. Reallly good professor!
I have taken this class about twice now the first time I dropped it half way because it required a lot of work. Now that I took the class its just extremely difficult.
I know his reviews look scary, but as long as you read the material he provides and check your essay formatting before you submit you will be fine. Every person who has received a less than satisfactory grade from him I guarantee has either slacked off or just not checked their work. You don't have to be smart to pass this class lol
Summer HR course. Lots of work, but I learned a great deal (refreshing). The professor was always available to answer questions.
This course is HMD 205. In my experience, I found it challenging to obtain feedback on my assignments, which required persistent effort on my part. The standards for written work in this course are very high, and despite my best efforts to meet these, I often found the expectations to exceed what I could achieve.
Online law class. Lots of work. Learned more in this one class than any other at UNLV. No joke that he can be tough, but he is very fair and always available to discuss things with me.
Great professor and is passionate about law but the workload is a lot, beware... the burnout is real with 1,500 word min papers due weekly even on exam weeks, you won't have much time to study beause of the papers. No textbooks, he posts your material and lectures. Exams are comprehensive so you really need to put in the work but it's tolerable.
Took this class over five weeks. Five major papers. All of them were very relevant, and the work was meaningful. l learned alot in a short time. Great professor.
Best class I've ever taken at UNLV. My favorite professor. I love his teaching style and I learned so much. I actually loved going to his class. Don't be late, though.
Professor Gebhart's class is challenging but rewarding. Stay on top of the weekly essays, engage in class, and utilize resources like unstuck study to succeed. Though strict, he's fair and genuinely wants students to learn. A tough but worthwhile course.
Wanted to hate him at first. Seemed strict. But turned out to be the best professor I've ever had. UNLV needs more profs like him. His style is rare and you'll love it.
Took this course Summer 2025. Dude was tough. But, seriously, the ONLY class at UNLV that made me want to work. He made me think differently. I learned tjings I'll never forget. Best professor at UNLV.
UNLV needs more professors like him. I loved his class and actually wanted to go because it was fun AND inspiring. He definitely knows his stuff. He makes class interesting. This is what I want from all my classes but I rarely get. 100% take him!
