Cool guy, explains really clear, essy to take notes, however the class average was an F in the final and a D in the course.
Overall a good instructor. Expect to work hard, but his grading is very fair, and he will explain topics clearly, make use of the "questions about the homework" part of class!
Pretty good teacher; his notes and instructions were easy to comprehend. He's young and very approachable--a little condescending at times when answering questions, but who isn't? Overall a good class...my only complaint: he's hot, which is sometimes a distraction ;)
He is an extremely cool guy. He does not demand you to attend every class and does not assign too much homework. Attend the last class before each exam, it is really beneficial. By the way, he is really hot which may lead you not concentrated in the class.
If you're taking Calc. 1 at UofA, this is who you want teaching you. He is very clear during lecture and will tell you what he expects you to know for exams. His tests were tricky, but its for the better. Take him.
I took this class over the summer (8 weeks) and i must say that it was hard but doable. he is extremely funny and very engaging. Going to class is not hard at all and he is extremely clear and super helpful. I went to his office hours because there wasn't enough time during class to explain everything and he was great. I would totally recommend him
Michael is easygoing and patient. He is willing to give you good grades. His class is enjoyable and his teaching makes sense. Although Calc III is not an easy course, if you often visit him during office hours and to have a good relationship with him, you will understand the material and eventually benefit from this class.
Really cool and laid back guy. He has a way of explaining things in a way that convinces you that you understand something more than you really do; so, make sure you study outside of webassign. Pretty easy tests. Great guy.
Michael is very fun and helpful but knows how to get down to business. His lectures are clear and concise and his notes are very specific. The material is challenging, but if you go into his office hours, he's very helpful and explains everything to you as simply as you need it.
Michael Gilbert is by far one of the best professors of math, if not of any department at the U of A. He is an extreme intellectual who knows what he is talking about at all times, and makes sure you are there with him every step of the way. He is also a great guy who wants to relate to you. I would take him for every math class if I could.
Michael is a great professor and explains everything so clearly. He really cares about the students and is very passionate about the topic. Very cute and funny as well ;)
Dr. Gilbert cares about his students and takes time out to help them with questions. He knows his subject and makes the lectures fun. You will definitely receive the grade you want if you out in the work. If you plan to take Math 116 here, he is THE man. He is also extremely funny!
He's the best. He makes sure you actually know the concept and where formulas come from. Although he does do quizzes and some work in class he'll let you take it home! Overall superrrr easy. You'll love him as a professor! Whole class got high grades
Dr. Gilbert is a really good teacher! Show up to class, do the study guides and homework you'll do good in the class. Definitely recommend!!
Dr. Gilbert is the best math teacher I've ever had. Don't get me wrong, this class is quite difficult, I rated him so highly in easiness because of the way he makes difficult topics seem easier. GO TO CLASS. If you miss even a single day you risk falling behind. His office hours are very helpful.
Dr. Gilbert was an awesome teacher. I thought he taught the lectures well and cares about his students. He will learn everyones name in the class and call you out randomly. I definitely hated it at first but it kept me focused and was beneficial towards my grade. Make sure to take Dr. Gilbert for Vector Calculus.
He's a fantastic teacher that always available and accessible. His lectures are always crystal clear and he's a funny guy that doesn't take things too seriously like some professors. All of his exams have a high average for a difficult class like MATH 223. Vector calc will be hard but Dr. Gilbert is one of the best professors to take it with.
He is a really cool teacher, and he is really helpful. He is really clear on his lectures and you will know exectly what he talks about. His tests are really tough, the average grades for his tests are not pretty. But all of your grades depend on your final. There is really nothing to worry about.
I have never been good at math but he is such an amazing teacher. He is willing to help you at any time and really cares about your success. His lectures are really clear and he really takes the time to go through every detail of a problem and doesn't just expect that you will know certain concepts.
Dr. Gilbert was honestly the best math teacher I've ever had. Tests can be a little challenging but he definitely prepares you for them
He literally is one of the worst Profs in the department. His methods are unbearable and his tests are unreal.
Dr. Gilbert is easily the best math professor at the University of Arizona. He is an active staff member in the department and is willing to work with you in order to help. His Lectures are clear and he really knows what he is teaching. The material in this class is hard, and everyone taking this class knows that. He will make it easier!! -L
I was so glad to have had Dr. Gilbert for vector calc. He gives great lectures, is extremely knowledgeable, and prepares you well for the final. One of the best teachers you can have though, as he gives a lot of partial credit if you show you understand concepts.
Vector Calculus is a really difficult class, but Dr. Gilbert sincerely wants his students to understand the material and be successful. He's a good professor and an understanding individual. This class is hard, but I know I learned a lot and I definitely appreciate Dr. Gilbert's teaching.
Like most math classes at the U of A, the tests are the most important chunk of your final grade. I think Dr. Gilbert is the best choice if you want to feel prepared and ready for the exams! This was my second attempt at taking calculus and I got a much better grade this time around. He's great at teaching math, simple as that.
If you have the chance to take Michael, do it! He is a young, funny guy who is relatable but is also a great instructor. He makes things clear and gets to know all the students. Calculus is difficult but he explains things really well. If I could take him for the rest of my time at U of A, I absolutely would.
Michael is a great instructor, I took him for the second time in Calc 1. He really explains a lot more theory in the math than other professors. I highly recommend him because he is cool young and funny but mostly understanding. He provides notes and does not require the book, his tests are fair depending on how well you understand the subject.
Michael is easily the best math professor I've ever had in my college career. He is a young and fun guy who really cares that you get it and doesn't go too fast nor too slow. It's calculus so it's not easy but he really sets you up for success. I hope he teaches more math classes here at U of A so I can continue to take his courses.
He clearly has a real passion for math and it comes out in his lectures. Has a dry sense of humor, which I appreciated. Tests are moderately hard. Do all the homework, test reviews the night before tests, and show up to class and you'll get an A.
He's a really good calculus teacher. One of the better professors in the U of A's dreaded math department. He's a fair and pretty generous grader. Please respect him and show up to class, he's a good guy.
By far the best math teacher I've had, and probably the best teacher in general.
Michael was an amazing professor. He explained everything really well, and his tests were exactly like his lectures. The only annoying this was the homework. The U of A requires online homework for 120R students, so it wasn't his fault, but there were assignments almost every night, though it was pretty easy
Hes easily my favorite professor Ive had so far & makes difficult concepts approachable. You can tell he genuinely cares about your success. This semester he started doing team homework which helped me meet people in class, but my group was hard to work with. His tests are difficult; definitely go to office hours if you need any extra help.
The most fun class. Teaches all concepts from the ground level. Makes you work hard and works hard himself too.
Dr. Gilbert is such a good teacher, If you have the opportunity to take one of his classes definitely take it. He wants you to succeed and gives amazing test reviews and really strives to make you understand the most important concepts at a good pace. Very compassionate and funny guy. He is very helpful in office hours if you need extra help.
Dr. Gilbert is probably the best math teacher I have ever had. Definitely take his course if you have the opportunity! He really cares about his students and is so funny!!
Definitely one of the best math teachers I've ever had. Goes in-depth with the material and is willing to go over more examples and answer any questions. Calculus is a hard subject but he makes it a lot easier to learn and understand. Would take him for all math courses if I could.
He is the best math teacher I've ever had. He respects the students and is very funny. Explains everything very well and will help you if you have questions. Its calc so it's not easy, but if you go to class and do the work you can get an A. Would definitely take again
Dr. Gilbert explains concepts clearly and completely, making math understandable rather than just a collection of vaguely-related confusing ideas.
Took this course over the summer. Ended up dropping a good amount of assignment and dropped the final and gave the average instead if wanted. Would recommend taking 116 with this professor. Lectures were videos and were very straight forward with no textbook needed but need to access the webassign which is included in the textbook access.
One of my favorite professor at UA. He was funny and always interacted with his students well. He had a highschool teacher feel to him; relaxed and easy going. He took time to explain everything and really cared about my learning. Unfortunately he left half way through the semester and that hurt my grade a bit. Great math teacher, highly recommend!
very chill. however, tests are difficult and once you fall behind it's hard to catch up
Exam instructions were very unclear, and all students were required to use CELL PHONES on one of the exams. We had to download a lockdown app on our phones and many students were confused about what was allowed. I got a very rude response from Prof when I simply asked for clarification for a later exam. The structure of this class is awful.
one of the worst experiences ever - hes rude, condensending and gets frustrated if you dont understand something right off the bat - cancelled last multiple times on a last minute basis
Professor Gilbert makes very useful notes to go along with each lecture and is always willing to provide help outside of class when you need it. He cares about his students and their understanding of the material. Would definitely take again!
Hands down best professor I've had at U of A. He is hilarious and has a great personality. He truly cares about his students. He is the best in the math department and I would take him again if I could. Lots of homework because it is math, but he is very understanding. Taking him, you will not be disappointed.
Main issue I had is that almost nothing was graded aside from exams until early May, a week before the final, so students have no idea what their grades in the class. Another is that he can be somewhat sarcastic and condescending, which can hurt in a class as hard as online Vector calc. Although, kind and funny and I did enjoy his class.
Very good lecturer - he's funny and manages to teach you vector calc pretty well. However, I found his tests to be incredibly difficult, and he said he was going easy on us this semester because of the pandemic, so... yeah. Probably a good choice if you actually care about learning this stuff, but don't expect an A.
He's a good teacher, but the way the course is set-up makes it difficult to get an A because few things are graded and it is super test heavy.
Solid choice for calc 1. I actually understood what he was teaching, and the pacing felt slow enough so I could grasp it and ask plenty of questions. Don't get me wrong, its still calculus, and the tests can be challenging if your not paying attention. Grading is tricky too because so much is put on so few exams.
Dr. G was a fantastic teacher! I really enjoyed showing up to this class as he taught the challenging material well, was understanding, and gave lots of feedback on our midterms. Overall Vector is a challenging class, but Dr. G taught us so much! He even autographed my notebook!
Dr. Gilbert is one of the best Math profs UA has to offer. He has a deep understanding of the subject and is able to explain the most complex of topics in the easiest of ways. The material for this class is challenging, but as long as you attend the lectures and put in the effort, he will make this one of the most enjoyable math class ever.
I had Dr. G Fall 2021 and I have to say I really like the guy. He truly does care about his students and gives mental health reminders and inspirational sayings throughout the semester. Vector is a hard class so expect to put work in if you want the grade you want. He is very engaging during lectures and can go off on some cool/funny tangents.
You can tell he is very passionate and always tries his best to make sure you understand. He also tries to through a little humor into his lectures which is always nice.
Hands down, one of the best math teachers in UofA. A lot of my friends struggled with Vector calc yet I found it the most enjoyable because of Dr. Gilbert. He makes the material easy to understand and hes easy to reach out of class. However, dont miss out on lectures or the material will get confusing.
Dr. Gilbert was fantastic and I'd highly recommend taking him for vector calculus. He was able to explain the material very well and it really helped me with the homework and exams. However, grades, except for exams, were not put in until right before the final. I would still recommend him because he was understanding and nice.
Super nice and funny guy. He does his best to make sure you understand the material. The material itself is okay, just as long as you study and take advantage of office hours, you'll be fine.
Professor Gilbert is the best math teacher I've had. He teaches calculus concepts clearly and well prepares students for tests. Attend lectures, he clarifies lots of questions in class. Webassign through the textbook is required but homework is similar to lecture problems. He's super passionate and funny, definitely a wonderful professor at the UA.
UA is notorious for having mediocre math professors but Dr. Gilbert is FAR from mediocre. He gave the most amazing lectures that I left every class confident in my ability to tackle it on the test. Like any math class though, you need to show up or you wont understand the material, even if it's not required to attend.
UofA bein notorious for their poopy math department, Gilbert is by FAR is the best math professor in the ENTIRE DEPARTMENT. He makes sure you understand the content, he presents his lectures in a strong and understanding way, If you could take him DO IT RIGHT NOW. Love this guy.
The best professor I have had in the 4 years I have been at the university. He is really kind and respectful. He really makes sure his students understand each concept fully before moving on to the next. Take his class. 10/10 You won't regret it.
Take this dude's class.
Gilbert is a great teacher for this class. His lectures are great and helpful. You will definitely not regret choosing him for math.
My professor in Math 112 was not the most qualified, especially considering the weak 112 curriculum, but Math 116 was significantly easier thanks to Gilbert's outstanding teaching skills. He effortlessly and thoroughly explains each problem. I find his method of teaching to be extremely beneficial and straightforward. JUST TAKE THIS CLASS!
He is the nicest teacher I have ever met. He truly cares about his students and wants you to succeed. Take his class!!!!!!!
Prof. Gilbert is a genuinely fantastic math teacher & he made it a pleasure to go to class. The content itself can be self-taught in two weeks & I recommend grinding out all the online homework in a few sessions, since they can pile up near the end of the semester. Bit of a tough grader for written homework & exams, but overall a fairly easy class.
Took this class over 5 weeks in the summer: - Lectures are clear and have a lot of problem solving. - WebAssign HW and 3 midterms+1 final are in-line with class content - Quizzes (open-book) have fixed dates, and are based on problems solved in class; one big quiz at the end. - Lots of discussion and encouragement to ask/answer questions in class
One of the best math teachers I have ever had, and a fantastic person. Wish I could take him for 129.
Terrible at explaining and goes through topics way too fast
Choose any other professor for 116
I think he is a nice guy, but I don't learn from his teaching style. I think it was also hard because he would talk and we had a TA who would write on the iPad, and they wouldn't always match up. Also, it was a big class, so it was hard to ask questions. I think he was nice overall, though, just not my learning style.
Gilbert gives really good lectures, you will need to study for tests but reviews and review keys are provided. He teaches math well and if you participate in class and focus you will learn understand the concepts.
Love him!! He has great Ta's who them and him work to build connections with students to help you succeed. This course, while studying was needed, was easy for me and my closest peers, because of his well organized schedule of homework due dates and well communicated concepts. Moreover, the exams were honestly a breeze, I would highly recommend!
So good!! He is clear and helpful in his lectures. Compared to 122B, his class was significantly easier. Tests are written well and not too harsh and reflects the final exam language. He is also funny and wears fire fits.
hould've been an easy class, but the professor didn't prep us for tests. WebAssign was awful, and Gradescope group work lost points for formatting. Class felt slow, though he tried to keep us a little entertained.
Convinced other reviews confused him for someone else. He either likes you or hates you, responds in seconds or not at all. Along with his poor teaching style, he is so inaccessible and it feels like he lacks passion for teaching. I struggled a lot and reached out so many times (IRL too), he never replied. I regret taking him, choose another prof!
Great professor that made lectures engaging and easy to follow. The problems done in class helped a lot for homework and the homework helped instill the topics. Perfect amount of homework. Exam reviews could've been better and were a lot harder than the exams but did help me prepare. Would definitely recommend him for calc 2.
He was incredibly understanding that as an accelerated summer course, we would be learning a lot within such a short amount of time. He makes jokes to keep us engaged, would ramble about the reasoning behind theorems, and you can tell he likes to teach and help his student enjoy learning.
He is fairly good as a lecturer and wants you to succeed. I did have one Gradescope assignment that there was a mistake in his grading, and he basically told me that it was only one point rather than fixing it. I got the vibe that he would've fixed it if I pushed harder, but I knew I was getting an A at that point. No other complaints though.
Gilbert is by far one of the best math professors in the department! And I took 223 in the summer so it was fast paced, but he sympathized with students. Exam material was definitely covered in class. He spent equal time both deriving and applying formulas to problems which helped with WebAssign. Expect group quizzes, easy if you go to class.
Michael was Amazing, he was very clear with his instructions, and the classes were very fun and enlightening.
Michael is funny and a very chill guy, and his lectures are always clear and very informative. Overall, if you put in good effort to do your homework, show up to most lectures, and complete the exam review packets they provide, you are basically set up to do well on exams and in the class overall.
He is a great guy and really cares about his students. Its a hard class but he makes it enjoyable. He has tutoring which was really helpful.
really great professor. he genuinely wants you to learn and understand everything. the hws and exams are fair, and sometimes exam questions came straight out of the hw. my main issue was how ridiculously difficult the final was. literally everyone i knew preformed terribly. this isnt the professors fault but man, the final was brutal
