Does not completely explain problems. Leaves a lot of steps out and assumes students understand. Nice guy, but difficult class unless you have extensive prior knowledge of Calc 1 or you are taking it for a second time.
HE is a nice guy, BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT TAKE HIM! His grading scale sucks because he only grades on exams. If you end up with him, pray for mercy. This class is HELL!!! I used to love math but now I wish that it never came into existance. Good luck, you will need it.
He was difficult because he works out problems in a different way than I am used to. He also hates calculators. If you are stuck with him, go to class, do the homework, and meet with him when you have questions and all should be ok.
Dont take this class under him... He is a horrible teacher and I would never ever ever want to deal with him again.

He was a good teacher, but you do have to work hard, come to class, and study to do well in his class.
If you expect any sort of curve to help your grade out don't expect it from Gilbert. His tests are hard. I never missed a day of class, did every homework problem, made a 90 on the final and missed a B by 1.5 points and he would not help me. No rewards for improvement over the semester.
he can teach just fine
As stated, he is not an easy teacher. His tests are fairly difficult and he does not curve one bit. The grade is based fully on the tests and final. He is willing to help anyone but is greatly annoyed if you don't do homework first. He's a good teacher, but you will have to do homework and attend class to do well.
Dont take him I took him and made an F then I took it with Dr. Lawkins and made a B. So get out now.
The first half of the semester he was fine, but that was the easy stuff. When it got to the more difficult parts he would not answer questions or explain how to work problems. Tests are very hard. He will single you out if you are not an engineering major. He did curve my grade so I got an A, but he always picked on me because I'm a business maj
I love him, but its not an easy class at ALL! He was so nice and helpful though. Take initiative and speak with him periodically, then he'll like you and you'll do fine. Keep up with the work, all of the quizzes are pop! Go to class, he'll call you out otherwise. He genuinely wants you to do well, so take advantage of that! Good LRCs!
I took his t/th 2hr night class. He was interesting enough for me not to fall asleep- I enjoyed his methodic lectures with adequate examples. His tests are tough, but he gives you credit for making the effort. HW is not required, but I feel like he favored you if he could tell you did it. An A was a 92. 4 exams 1 give-me take home and final.
He's impossible! I made an A in 141 and I'm almost failing this class. He is really intelligent, but an awful explainer. He never answers questions fully. Also, the only grades are the 5 test grades so if you are a bad test taker stay away!
Alot of people have no clue what they're talking about. He is a genius of a man and teaches well. He does skip easy steps, but he assumes since your in calculus you can do easy 5th grade steps in your head. The no calculator rule is tedious, but helps you learn better overall. Understand the homework concepts and the quizzes will be a breeze.
Great professor! He tries to help you understand the material, and if you have a question he will explain it until you understand it. Very helpful during his office hours. Will work with you if you can't make it during those hours. All grades come from quizes, so know the material, he does give partial credit. I would highly advise taking him!
If you just go to class and understand the basic concepts, you will get a good grade. His quizzes are only the basics of what you learned, and his exams are easy. He is a really great teacher. HIGHLY recommended.
It is an entertaining class and is taught well. He's a real guy that makes it understandable. Take him.
Gilbert is one heck of a cool guy. He's good at teaching and he will help. DO your homework and an A is inevitable.
Gilbert is a very good teacher. The material in 142 is a lot more difficult than in 141, but as long as you attend class and do the example problems, you should be fine. Also, use office hours if you need extra help.
Solid teacher and does not mind going out of his way to help you IF he knows you are putting amble effort into his class.
Outstanding. Notes are helpful so go to class. Likes to use example problems discussed in class on quizzes. He will give really useful study guides for exams. Highly recommended.
Excellent Teacher! I learned a great deal in this class. Gilbert was extremely helpful. He wants you to learn and do well. He always tells you when there is a quiz, but there is no schedule so you have to go to class to know when they are. No homework grades and no calculators. I plan on taking him for Calc II
I have always made A's and B+'s in math. so far I have failed two out of three of his tests. He goes over notes so quickly you cant understand. tests are easy IF you understand EVERY concept. would not take again.
He's a great guy and wants to help. He encourages you to come to his office hours and his tests are not hard. No quizzes, so test grades are important. Class isn't required, but I highly recommend it.
He is a nice guy but he teaches to his class as if they should already know everything there is to know about Calculus. He goes over the problems extremely fast and skips steps that he assumes you know. Like I say, nice person but I highly advise that unless you already know all there is to know about calculus, stay away from this professor.
Michael Gilbert, in my opinion, is an easy and understandable professor. He gave tons of partial credit, no quizzes, and didn't collect homework. He was, for the most part, easy to understand. I recommend him for anyone taking Calc 2.
Mike Gilbert is a fantastic teacher. For those who did badly in his class, I have to imagine it happened for one of three reasons: lack of math aptitude, lack of effort, or just the fact that it's Calc II. It's one of the hardest math courses that most math and science people have to take. I know many people who failed the class with other profs.
Excellent professor! He is a little weird, and is literally all over the class room. He will help you as much as he can. He does expect you to work hard, but will help you if you ask him and/or go to his office hours. One of the best teachers I have ever had. Calc 2 is not easy, but he does a good job clarifing it
he is a great guy and does a really good job explaining everything but your only grades in the class are the tests, so if u mess up on one you are screwed. the tests are pretty difficult so u have to study like crazy.
Excellent professor. Though the class is difficult, he explains the material well and is very helpful. Your Grade consists of just four tests and a final. Attendance is not mandatory, but the textbook is a necessity.
Calc I and II. Awesome! He does a great job of explaining tough material. If you get confused, he'll do whatever he can to help you. He's also entertaining, so you don't zone out in class. He never puts surprises on tests. Go to class, you'll do fine. Do your homework too, you're golden. Reworked sched just to have him twice. Definitely take him!
He is probably the most helpful professor I had so far and just simply an amazing person. He does a great job explaining the material but its necessary that you read the book before coming to class. Attendance is not mandatory but really important if you want to succeed in his class. Go to his office hours, take notes and PRACTICE! & you'll be fine
Mr. Gilbert is really entertaining and helpful when you need him. I heard this was one of the hardest classes in the Math world but he made it very understandable and entertaining. It helps to do the homework. Most of the tests are like the homework. He does not try to trick you. Highly recommended.
Mr. Gilbert is very approachable and always in a good mood. His classes consist of lots of example problems. I highly recommend doing the homework assigned, it will definitely help you keep up during class. Very quirky, which keeps an otherwise sleepy classroom interesting! As long as you keep up with the work and ask questions, you should be fine.
Professor Gilbert is a really nice guy. I just didn't think the class was very interesting, so I didn,t go to often, which is NOT a good idea. If you go to class and do the homework though this is a good math class.
very enthusiastic about teaching and is, in my opinion, a hilarious guy. If you just do the work you will do great--he puts nothing on the test that you can't do.
Gilbert is a fantastic prof that really cares about his students. I would be taking him for 141 if I could work him into my schedule. Everything is crystal clear and he doesn't throw curve balls. I may be wrong, but I don't think many professors would come to campus on a Sunday evening to help students review for a non-final test.
Attendance and homework both optional. Followed the book closely. In-class tests were not bad if you did the homeworks. Do the homeworks! Several tests were take-home. Tests always had extra credit. Great teacher, very funny and approachable. Likes to learn your names. I definitely recommend his class.
Do the homework when he teaches new topics. His exams are easy. There are no tricks. Exams are the ONLY grade, so make sure to study. I only need a 60 on his final to get an A in the class. He is very helpful. Only teacher I know who will schedule extra help sessions from 6-9 on a Friday night to help students for an upcomin exam. Great personality
One of the best professors I have ever had... Take him for Calc II! He makes a relatively hard subject come together, at a very reasonable pace. Cha-cha-cha!
Literally my favorite professor of all time. He always makes jokes, and even if they aren't funny you can't help but laugh at his comments. He will always help if you ask him. His tests are difficult but easy to do well on. I hope I can take him for Calc III!
A great teacher.Enjoyed going to class. If you put in the effort, you can get the grade you want.
Professor Gilbert is an amazing techer and I reccommend him to everyone. He really cares about his stundents and whether they learn or not. I had his 8a.m. class and he always came in with a smile on his face and asked us how we were doing. The material is challenging, but he will review things if you ask questions. He is the best teacher I ever had
Gilbert is an awesome teacher! So fun and easy to talk to! It is so easy to find him for office hours. Questions on the exams were expected and I got a really good grade! I would highly recommend taking his class!
Great teacher. First test be ready for it because it was fairly simple but, it was over material i missed in class. Go to class, take notes, and you WILL get an A. And Always study! tests are what he tells you will be on there. Failed first test but tons of extra credit. It is really easy to get an A if you pay attention.
Professor Gilbert is amazing!! Even at 8:00 A.M., he is so friendly and joyful! He is definitely one of my favorite professors. Go to class and do the homework. Even if some material is confusing, he gives extra credit! TAKE HIM for calc II; you won't regret it:)
Mr. Gilbert is probably my favorite math teacher I've ever had. I had him for both Calc II and Calc II. Homework is optional but I recommend you do it, as exams are similar to the homework. Grading is pretty fair and he gives a TON of extra credit. Like I said, I liked him enough to take him twice.
One of the best math teachers i've ever had. He is extremely helpful and encourages you to ask questions and interact in class. He is very willing to work any homework problems and doesn't make you feel dumb if you don't get it. It's a good idea to go to every class so you dont miss anything. His tests are tricky but he's a reasonable grader.
Seriously. The best math teacher I've ever had. I definitely recommend him to everyone! I suck at math, and he actually helped me understand it and like it. He's likable, funny, and really wants his students to learn. He's one teacher I highly respect and look up to. Study hard and you will do well in his class.
I loved Gilbert. He does leave out the algebra steps, but if you ask him to do them he will. His tests are straightforward with no tricks. He is one of the best math teachers I have had. Definitely recommend him!
he goes so quickly and gives you little to no time to copy down, and when he finishes the problem he gives you 2 sec to ask q's. he gives extra credit but its almost impossible to get it on his qz's. he is a harsh grader!! dont expect an easy a,b, or even c!! he takes off so many points if you dont do each step like he does even if you get he answr
Gilbert's Math 125 class wasn't extremely hard, and with very little effort made an A. I took calculus in high school, and this was basically the same class. He does give in class quizzes, so you do need to show up to class pretty regularly. He's also a really nice guy. If you email him, or talk to him in person, he will help you.
He is a very nice guy. The main thing about his style of teaching that I did not like is that he goes through the material too fast. To me he was not extremely detailed for Math 142. He also can be harsh at grading, and the only grades in his class are quizzes and 2 tests. He does give some extra credit projects, but they are not very easy.
Highly recommend Mr. Gilbert for Calculus, tests are straight forward. There are bonus points on all quizzes. He is a very helpful and good math teacher.
gets frustrated if you ask a lot of "algebra," questions, but a nice guy. tests pretty straight forward-gives you a study guide. teaches differently from web assign. he's an ok teacher for someone who isn't good at math. not the best or worst. quizzes always stump me, but maybe not like that for most.
Michael Gilbert isn't very good at explaining math for being a Calculus teacher. If he gives you a review out of the book to study for the test, be warned that the test won't even remotely look the same as what you studied. He is horrible with e-mails and doesn't help, despite how helpful he portrays himself. Not the hardest teacher, just annoying.
Not helpful, difficult to understand what he is trying to teach. Instead of explaining how he got an answer or the steps he took to get there, he just does it and expects everyone to understand. Tests are sometimes related to exams, web assign does everything a different way and he doesn't teach it to get the answers on there. Go to class!!!!!!!!!!
Gilbert usually makes mistakes in class but he gives take home test along with in class exams. Always grades a 75 point exam out of 80 points or so and always trys to give extra credit. After reading these other reviews it seems like people dont try and expect good grades. Just go to class and do some of the homework and youll be fine.
I already knew calculus, so this class was a breeze. Not very clear in instructions but more than willing to help. Also hilarious. Gilbert is the funniest professor I've had in college.
Gilbert is a good professor. If you enjoy dry humor, you'll like him. Go to his lectures. I skipped two and never understood the material like I would have if I had gone.He explains the material well. It helps if you have a good recitation GTA. Just pay attention. I have taken calculus before so I didn't really find it hard. Take him! It's easy!
This was my best class for the semester. While the lectures are not mandatory I advise going. I learned the most from my TA and the exams were relatively easy if you paid attention during recitation. Highly recommend
Laughably easy. just go to recitation and the tests will be a breeze. He is really disorganized though and his lectures are pretty useless. Take him if you want an easy A
This class is cake if you've taken calculus before, otherwise it could be a real headache. He goes through problems really slow and is pretty disorganized. Go to recitation and not lectures.
Dr. Gilbert's class was frustrating to say the least. He did make it clear that his door was open, however, his level of understanding was slim to none, so don't show up with an excuse. The recitation is your best bet for understanding the material. Lecture is pretty unorganized and confusing.
He is AMAZING! Best professor I've ever had. He will work with you for whatever you don't understand in class or outside class. Do a few book problems for practice, but he didn't grade hw.
Easiest math class I have had so far. Almost every test was a take home test that was due a week or two after he gave it to you in class. For the inclass tests he goes over examples and gives you the same types of problems
Funny guy. Good teaching. Easy homework sets. Tests are very fair.
He is a good enough teacher for anyone who is taking Calc III. Grades are only from tests but 2 of ours were take-home & they are fairly straight forward. He knows his calc, but sometimes he makes mistakes and engineers NEVER correct him. I always noticed the mistakes though. Nice and goofy guy. Take him for calc III if you want to learn & get an A
Gilbert is an awesome math teacher. He explains concepts throughly and tests fairly. He realizes that it is impossible for student to perform perfectly on tests, so there are always five extra points built in. In addition, he gave some extra credit for showing up to class when there were few students present. Half the tests were also take-home.
If you have the chance to take Prof Gilbert, TAKE HIM. If you simply show up, take good notes, and to the reviews carefully you can easily get an A. You have the opportunity to earn over a 100 on some of his tests which are not tricky. Some are take home. Don't buy the ebook - you can't use it in class.
I took him for both Calculus II and III. Not sure if he just loves calculus, but he's great at it and really made some profound metaphors about mathematics as a language that inspired me to love and appreciate math much more. He does usually make his own exam problems, tries to make them more challenging, but great teacher who wants to see you try
Loved him because he does not use WebAssign. I failed this class in the spring and made a high B in Gilbert's class. Definitely take him. I went to his office hours a couple times, and he didn't make me feel dumb; I know the material so much better after taking his class. He knew my name after the first week. He also teaches Calc 3. Hw optional.
He expects you to know all of algebra, trig, and calc I before starting class. If you are rusty in these, do not take him. He uses the examples straight out of the book for homework, only exams are graded. Half of his exams are take home, but they are not clear and you could easily miss points on them for missing parentheses. Take another teacher !
I feel like he helped me improve my craft. He will challenge you, but if you put in all your effort, it will pay off. :)
He is a great professor, I would take again. He really wants you to do well if you put in some effort.
There are better and there are also worse teachers. Seems better suited for Calc. Book needed for HW Pros: Extra credit if you answer questions on board. Helpful in office hours. Funny. Owes up to errors. Cons: Avoided teaching the easier way. Occasionally has strange outbursts & getting frustrated at kids. Quirky in a very bad way sometimes.
His teaching Style is tough and rough. You have to self teach yourself if you can not keep up to his speed. Will not remember your name unless you are constantly talking to him. He doesn't take attendance or homework and there are about 4 tests until the final, only things he grades. He grades harder on the take homes then in class tests. MEMORIZE.
He is so bad!
He may be a good professor for higher level math courses, but not for Calc 2. Your entire grade hinges on 4 exams -all worth the same amount of points, except the last one (it is worth x2). You have to do homework just to keep up, but he never grades it. I'm an A student, spent hours in the tutoring lab, his office, and studying and still failed.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but it is if you want to pass. Be prepared to never miss a day because the math tutorial center cannot help after halfway through the class. He used to give extra credit or quiz grades but decided to scrap that concept for this year. He desperately needs to pick back up these extra grades, way harder than other teachers.
I took 241 as a freshman in the engineering section. He took a little warming up to but once you know his style (heavy lecture), he's pretty okay. He's sometime disorganized but is aware of that and won't test you on stuff he didn't lecture. Grades all in tests and quizzes but there's extra points everywhere. Show up, take notes, go to recitation.
I took the Calc 3 Engineering section taught by Gilbert. Class is barebones with just recitation quizzes, 3 exams, and a final. Homework is optional - DEFINITELY do it so you can do well on exams. He posts worksheets with solutions but sometimes they're wrong. TAs are pretty good at explaining stuff Gilbert only skims over in lecture.
Can be pretty confusing to follow, even if you go to every lecture. It's important down the road a piece that you do all the homework and worksheets, and even then, the tests are quite difficult. No calculators on tests, and usually tests are challenging time-wise. Usually there's extra points built in to tests.
Was inclined to give a 2 based on my experience, but I must give a 3 to be fair as if you are good at math, he is probably ok. As someone who has had to struggle through math, doesn't come naturally at all, he was a mediocre professor. He is fair, but callously so. He does not care for any (trust me ANY) struggles you may have. Scores are it
Gilbert is so funny! He is a super great man, and a pretty good teacher! He moves really quickly with material, so attending class is vital to success. His tests are pretty hard, but he is willing to help in office hours, get to know him! One downside is that his class has 3 tests and a final and those are your only grades. Doing homework helps.
Gilbert seems better fitted for a smaller classroom instead of a large lecture hall. I went to his lectures mainly to just listen to him crack jokes. The book and a good TA are your best friends in this course because during recitation all you do is take quizzes and his lectures are pretty useless. He will help you if you go to office hours.
Math builds upon itself, like a tower. When building a tower, you start with the base, then works towards the point. This teacher seemed to start with the middle of the tower and skip around. Kind of a mess. Also, math class (Cal 3) for just engineering students, taught by the math department was a nightmare. Not real great.
Do the recommended homework to study for the exams. Attend the lectures even though they aren't mandatory. Go to his office hours when you don't understand something. He is super helpful. Take the take home tests seriously.
Dr. Gilbert is a very helpful professor. He likes when students come to his office hours to ask questions. Going to office hours is probably the best thing you can do for yourself in his class. He is also a very caring professor and he makes an effort to get to know the students that come to office hours. Always do the homework, and you'll do fine.
He doesn't respond to emails, gives unhelpful feedback on graded tests (if he gives any at all), produces incorrect test keys (that he gets angry over if you point out that they are incorrect and request a regrade with a correct key), and gives incoherent lectures with example problems that are worked incorrectly. The only way to learn is the book.
Prepare to teach yourself everything, Gilbert doesn't even try to teach you or make his lectures interesting in any way. If you really hate yourself, go ahead and take him but otherwise stay away. Your grade is 5 tests and a final. Nothing else. Homework optional and unnecessary since the problems he assigns usually have little to do with the exam.
He was a very nice man and I enjoyed having casual conversations with him, but teaching this class was not something he should have been doing. I was very unorganized with no set syllabus with assignments and also some days he would come in just SUPER angry and took it out on us. If you get to know him and come to class he will grade you easily.
I attend class regularly and still find that his exams are ridiculously hard and do not reflect whatsoever on the homework problems. He "seems" nice but he also seems like he can snap really quickly. I wish there was more to your grade than just the hard quizzes and exams.
Very nice guy and extremely brilliant. He teaches with the concepts in mind so you can actually apply the material in real life situations. If that seems too difficult its unlikely a career in STEM is your best bet. If youre serious about math or a STEM career take him, youll be pleased that you did as his teachings will prove useful in the future.
Gilbert was a very moody man who often went off on tangents that had nothing to do with the lecture. He would also get angry easily if you didn't understand a concept he considered "easy". The class had 5 tests and a final. If you must take him, cross your fingers you get a good TA. Not sure how he his other classes were, but Calc 3 was awful.
I personally liked Gilbert's teaching methods. I liked how he explained step by step of each examples. Although he does not post answers to study guides, if you do all the homework and go over notes each night, you will definitely know the answer to the guides. Also if you get stuck on a question his office hours are very helpful. Attend class!
Gilbert was a FANTASTIC calculus professor. He teaches at a moderate pace that is easy to follow. His exams are direct reflects of the material taught, but you definitely need to prepare for them. Grade determined only on 5-60 point exams and a 100 point final. If you attend class and do the homework/studyguide it is a relatively easy math course.
He doesn't take attendance or check homework, but if you want to do well, you have to go to class, pay attention, and keep up with the homework. If you put forth the effort, the course is very manageable and not too stressful. There are very few grades, but his exam reviews are very helpful. He's a kind man and works hard to learn everyone's name.
Gilbert makes himself very available for students outside of class. He always encourages students to use him as a resource. He always makes class serious, but always makes students laugh and feel comfortable. If tests aren't your thing, the majority of the final grade is 5 tests, and a one point grade for your homework average.
Gilbert is a great prof! Awkwardly hilarious and really cares about his students (he may get your name wrong, but he tries). Lectures are straightforward and he does practice problems just like ones on hw and tests. Your only grades are the test grades, so don't make the mistake I did by skipping the homework. Cramming won't work for Calc II.
Good teacher, has no problem answering questions and often encourages them. All of the homework is online and uses a lot of those problems as examples.
The only grades were from 5 tests. Doing homework wasn't mandatory, but if you want to do well, you should probably do it. Exams are very similar to his study guides, but you might not get a study guide for every test. Overall not hard to make a good grade because there's a lot of opportunity for extra credit on the exams.
Gilbert was a pretty good teacher. Homework is optional. Completely based on tests. I had taken calc 2 before in high school and and put very little effort in the class. He sometimes went on random tangents in class that were kinda intersting. He gives out lots of partial credit
A true gem. I've never had a professor quite like this man, but he really cares about the students and wants to see us all do well. He's great at explaining all of the material and just an all around great guy. The class is difficult though, all grades come from just 5 exams and then the final so this isn't the kind of class you can blow off.
This dude is pretty cool and I like his abnormal teaching style. The only problem I have with his class is that he goes off on tangents a lot and teaches the material as if you are already familiar with the concepts. But overall this dude is a good professor.
Really cool dude, teaches you whats important and is willing to help
Just show up for class, take notes, do your homework, and study and you'll be fine. It's a hard class with challenging concepts but it's not impossible. He gives you exactly what you need to know for exams. Grade is only based on exams though, so don't take him if you're a poor test taker! Extra credit is often hidden on exams :-)
he took attendance at the beginning of the semester and then at random as semester went on. he tells seemingly random stories in the middle of class that he thinks has something to do with the material or context of example problems.
Gilbert is a mad man. Very spacey and odd, but a still a good teacher. What he does in class directly reflects his tests and exams. He uses examples straight out of the book, so you can look back at that if needed. Assigns lots of homework, but it's needed to understand. Highly recommend going to his office hours, it makes everything much clearer.
In this class (I made an A-), I was very nervous after barely getting a B- in Calculus I. But, this professor restored my confidence in math. His grades only consist just 5 exams and a final, but he MORE than prepares you for them with lectures and reviews. He CARES about the students as individuals and will do whatever he can to ensure success.
Tests are your only grades. He will go on long rants showing the elaborate proof behind concepts he is teaching which NO ONE in the class will understand. Without having previously taken AP Calc BC, this class would prove very very difficult. Nice guy, kind of creepy.
Your grade is based off of 5 exams and a final exam. I failed one and still got a 95 in the class. He's sweet and cares a lot about his students and their understanding of the material. He tries hard to learn everyone's names. He gives lots of extra credit opportunities and partial credit on exams. Take him! Sit in the front and talk to him.
This was by far the ABSOLUTE worst professor/teacher I've ever had in my entire life. You have a quiz every week and depending on his mood, that is how he will grade them. He goes off on random tangents and tries to explain simple and easy concepts in elaborate and unnecessary ways. I'm a math person and failed this class because of his teaching.
Normally a straight A student, but took my first W. Doesnt teach like the rest of the department. Homework doesnt count but is done in the textbook not webassign so you dont learn much. Thinks hes teaching an engineering course. I would reccomend any other professor, but if you're stuck with this guy math better be a priority.
Prof. Gilbert is nice, but a little weird. The class was straightforward; he worked through several problems. Didn't exactly explain/simplify things well. I did really well on all the exams in class but bombed the final (which was departmental and I thought was easy).
The first class really scared me because he was all over the place, but I think he was just excited to get started. Attendance is not mandatory, but is critical if you want to do well. He recognizes and appreciates class participance. Study in-class problems for the exams! And do the homework and ask questions about it. Go to office hours!
Hes hilarious and great at teaching
I really enjoyed Clac 3 with Gilbert. This man is an absolute weirdo, but in a really funny and endearing way. You can tell he really loves math, and he tries to learn everyone's names. At least in my class, the grades were 100% based on exams, but there were 6 exams so the pressure on each exam wasn't too much. Homework is optional, which I loved.
Gilbert is such a funny and sweet man. He genuinely cares for all of his students and tries to learn everyones name! The class is hard though if you do not spend time on it. He is fun to come to class for, but the notes are not very clear and laid out. I would highly suggest after class going through the notes and figuring out what just happened.
He is easily the most personable professor I've had, and it makes lectures a lot more bearable. Your entire grade is based on 5 exams plus a final. He teaches entirely out of the book so be prepared to read it. Go to class and study often, you'll be fine.
He's very personable and one of the best professors I've had. He always keeps lectures interesting. He also gives a lot of extra credit on tests so show your work. However, it is vital to study for the tests because your entire grade is based on them. If he gives you the option for a take-home test don't do it because he would make it super hard.
A sweet man. Very kind and caring. If you are struggling he wants to help, just don't come to him before trying yourself. Like- don't be on your phone in class, come to class, and talk to him. and at least attempt homework. If you do this and still need help he is happy to help. A good professor lectures are very understandable.
Doesnt use Canvas. Must be responsible for yourself and your assignments. Very poor at explanations. Quizzes and Exams are only grades given. No extra credit provided
Calc II is the hardest class I've ever taken, but I still have really enjoyed it with Dr. Gilbert. He really wants his students to succeed. It is possible to earn bonus points on exams if you choose to challenge yourself.
Math142 is hard, no way to get around it. Gilbert grades leniently, which makes the class easier but you have to work for it. Gilbert taught some things well and other things not so well. Most people in the class don't like him, but I think he gets the job done as a teacher. Expects you to do to most of the work, but he will help if you seek him.
Math teacher have a way of making students feel stupid for asking questions. Gilbert is the complete opposite. He always explains the answer without being condescending (even when it has a pretty bad question). He is great at lecturing and knows how to get students to understand. Not many grades so if you don't like that: take different professor
I would definitely take Dr. Gilbert again. He is fair to his students. He makes himself accessible. He gives you whatever you need to succeed in his class. He will not bend over backwards for you though; you are responsible for what your mistakes and he wont change the rules for anyone. Cal 2 is always hard and he made it enjoyable despite that.
Gilbert is so funny! I'm honestly shocked only a few people laugh at his jokes. His exams are definitely doable, and if you bomb one, you still have a chance to redeem yourself. The grading scale is forgiving, comparatively. Plus, he's very good at explaining things on a 3D plane, which is super important in Calc III. This man deserves a raise.
Calc 2 was a breeze with Gilbert, he was funny, easy to talk to, and he explained things very thoroughly. Calc 3 was so much worse. Calc 3 is much harder anyway, but he was just not as good as he was in Calc 2. He made me feel dumb when I asked questions, and did not explain things half as well. Would recommend for Calc 2 not for Calc 3.
He tries to learn everyone's names; hes super easy to talk after class or in office hours. Sometimes he can get grouchy so just be patient with him those days. Don't question him to death. Let him talk first, ask questions later. Homework is optional but you should do it. We had a quiz every recitation class. Your only grades are quizzes and tests
For calc 3 our only grades were tests. He was amazing during the transition to all online classes. He would lecture during his normal time periods and upload the lectures to canvas after usually. If you show up everyday and show that you're an active participant in the class he is more willing to be personable with you.
I am taking Gilbert online. Half way through the term & I am doing very well (best I've ever done in a calc class at UTK). Gilbert does an AMAZING job w/ his online lectures, he is a very fair grader and gives lots of partial credit! He is very good at delivering the material in an easy to understand way! My favorite calc prof by far. HE IS A GEM!!
Hes a great professor and really cares about your understanding of the concepts. I had crap proffessors for calc 1 & 2and received C- and B- in both of those classes and thanks to Mr. Gilbert and his excellent teaching I am getting an A. Your grade is made up of 10 quizes for the semester and he drops the two lowest, and a midterm and a final.
Solid Calculus professor choice, low workload. Doesn't make Calculus easy, but no professor could, tbh.
I LOVE MR. GILBERT. Super sweet and caring, and he is honestly the best math professor I have ever had. If he sees that you are trying, you will end up with an A. He hums while he writes on the board, and he is a funny person. I had him for an 8 am, and his class was worth it being an 8 am. I wish I could write more about him if it allowed me to.
Prof. Gilbert is extremely good at his job and also one of the best people I have ever met. I made my worst grade of any math class in this, but none of that has anything to do with him. Tests and quizzes are straightforward if you pay good attention in class. If you can, take his class..
Dude was literally amazing during the pandemic.
Out of all my calculus classes, his was by far the hardest. The concepts weren't that bad, but we were graded on a few things. Basically, one or two mistakes could really mess with your grade. I did like Gilbert for the most part, he seemed like he cared and sometimes he seemed like he couldn't be bothered. Overall, it was ok. Just glad it's over.
Dr. Gilbert was a great prof. He really cared about his students and it was obvious he wanted to help. The homework is not required but you should do it. We had 11 quizzes, most were take home and he only kept the highest 8 grades plus midterm and final. He is very lenient grader, JUST SHOW SOMETHING AND YOU WILL GET PARTIAL CREDIT!!
Probably the best math teacher I have had thus far. He is very straight forward about what he expects from you as the student. His note system is pretty brilliant too. He sort of holds your hand and guides you through his them, and with the video recordings there's no reason you should miss anything. Class was still tough. Expect to work.
Excellent professor, that cares about your understanding of the material, and carefully goes through steps to ensure that you understand the topic. His enthusiasm makes you want to attend each lecture. I got a B+, but that was completely my fault, there is no reason you should not get an A.
Honestly I love Gilbert so much. I hated calc 1 and 2 and was awful at them both, but somehow when Gilbert reviewed integrals and derivatives at the beginning of the semester really quick, it clicked (wish I had him for those two classes). He adds personality to the content which makes it a lot easier for me to learn. Amazing.
Definitely a weird guy, but I was always entertained in class. He does go off on tangents and tell stories sometimes, but it never really bothered me. Only grades were 11 quizzes (worst 3 dropped), midterm, and final. There is hw from textbook problems but it isn't graded. This concerned me at the beginning but just do your hw and you'll be good.
He is one of the best teachers in the math department at UTK. He makes things very clear, and is even clearer about how he wants work shown to get credit on tests. It is a hard math class, but he doesn't make it unnecessarily hard like other people, if you fail this class and you have Gilbert, it's because you didn't try.
Gilbert is one of the most caring professors I have had, he takes the time to learn people's name in lecture and is very funny and entertaining. There are no homework grades, usually about 10-11 quizzes and he keeps 8 grades, and there are two exams. Quizzes are tricky but if you attend class, they should not be too much of a problem.
Nice guy but very tough grader and not many chances to get your grade up . Be ready because it’s going to be tuff
If you like getting 5 massive, horribly representative grades to determine your understanding of the content, this class is for you. Also, be prepared for random days when he decides to let you redo test questions. Sorry if your sick in a bed, Gilbert could not care less as he plays god with your grades and tuition money.
Class was not even hard but the fact that he chose some random day after a test to let people redo. I honestly thought it was a joke when I heard it. That is some high school teacher level petty. Also, if you mess up one test, say goodbye to any chance at a good grade as you spend the rest of the semester scraping it out of a hole.
He chose a day to give test redos and said nothing. I did not know we still did graded work that we do not tell everyone about, such a joke. Class is easy but it makes it harder to get an A having to do better on tests because I couldnt go to class one day and missed a test redo.
Very good lecturer. He takes the time to step aside from the big new concepts to go over the stuff you should definitely know, but forgot, like trig functions, or a quick review of how natural logs work. He let us use an equation sheet, and for an exam most people made dumb little mistakes on, he let us redo part of it, so he's a very fair grader.
He's not that bad when it comes to teaching, but the only grades you get are like five tests. No quizzes, no homework, no extra credit, so if you mess up on one test good luck getting your grade up. Harsh grader and tests are really hard. This is saying a lot because I LOVED calc 1 and 2, I love math in general (I'm majoring in it).
Professor Gilbert is by far the best math professor I have taken at UTK. His only grades are 5 60-point exams and the final, but he provides reviews that are very similar to his exams. Anyone really struggling in this class either didn't attend class or didn't make an effort to do the reviews and ask for help.
Gilbert is a good teacher, has good notes that cover everything you get tested on. The reviews are very similar to the tests. Easy at the beginning of the term but gets more difficult later on. Other ratings complain about how they didn't come to class and missed the test redo. I mean, if you didn't come to class, that's your fault, not Gilbert's.
Gilbert is by far the best math professor I have had. The only grades were exams, but the reviews prepared for them very well. People are complaining about him being unfair for grade makeups, but he is a very fair professor and told us at the beginning class would not be a mandatory grade but helpful at the very least. Very entertaining guy, too.
I was a transient student taking a summer class for transfer credit. Although material is difficult, the lectures were clear, and he was great at showing how to solve problems. I only needed a minimum of a C in the class, and with not much effort, I was able to pass with a B+. He is one of the best professors I've ever had! 100% recommend.
I loved Professor Gilbert. I took his class over the summer, attendance and homework were optional grade wise but I would recommend doing any you struggle with. The guided notes were fantastic and he made everything easy to understand. He let us use specific study guides and notes on quizzes and the final. Dropped two quizzes and curved at the end.
Hi, I liked the professor. Sarah Bright
Professor is great - easy class, no textbook needed. Unstuck study was a big help for test prep. Definitely take this if you can.
One of the best math teachers I have ever had. He was super passionate about the content, the lectures were informative but not mandatory, and he grades very leniently.
