I had him for personal morality. Great class, but it's impossible to get an A, so if you want an easy A, do not take this class! The midterms and paper are impossible.
He grades really hard. Doesn't give out solid A's to anyone.
Impossible grading standards... It's a GEN ED
It is true that this professor does grade REALLY hard, BUT it's a very interesting class and you really do learn about philosophy theories (i took personal morality also). Midterm/tests are short in class essays and he gives you the questions beforehand.
this is a tier one gen ed and it is ridiculously hard... i have never ever encountered a class where the sole purpose of taking it is to regurgitate exactly what he tells you, and that's how his tests and papers are
The class is hard, but I love it. He's a very dynamic teacher, and he isn't difficult to understand.
he is very interesting and does not give a lot of work.there is reading for everyday but he goes over it in lecture.he really seems to care about what he is teaching and there is not a lot of work.the gradeing is fairly easy and he posts his lecture notes online, tests just ask you to repear lecture
In this class, you almost never have to do the reading assignments. If you attend class everyday, you can pass any test or do any assignment off the top of your head. He is a great teacher, but sometimes a little boring. In class notes are even posted online if you don't want to go. Good class.
hes extremely thorough. you dont need to read the readings. the grading is pretty generous, but that also depends on you TA. pretty easy clas
good class. posts notes. thorough explanation. not a lot of work, but helpful assignments. take the class!
Professor Gill is very clear and his teaching style precise. Something really nice is that he doesn't take attendance AND all the notes from class are online. :)
Gill is a very nice professor. He is helpful and a very clear lecturer. You only write two essays throughout the course and have one midterm and one final. That's it! The discussion section for the course is really interesting so make sure to go...plus they take attendance in the discussions.
Gill was awesome and class was really interesting
Gill is such an awesome prof. He's hilarious, intentionally or not, and he makes his lectures very interesting. The TA I had, Chris Freiman, was far too difficult in his grading and was boring as hell in the discussions though.
Awesome Professor. For not being a philosophy major and taking a 400 level class, I still felt comfortable being in the class. Always there for office hours to makes sure all of the material is understood. Highly recommend!
Gill is a good teacher. The topics are pretty interesting and I like his jokes, but it can be boring some days. There is always reading homework but it's not bad at all and he only sometimes gives reading quizes. His powerpoints have all the information you need to do well on Midterm and the Final. The group discusions help clarify the material.
Easy class, if you stay focused. Take it.
There are only three tests, and one paper. Blue book exams, but he gives you questions before hand. Do well on everything that is graded, because there is no extra credit or homework grades. Reading is not necessary, but attend lecture. I earned an A
He is foolish. At first, I thought he was alright, he gave cool examples and was easy to understand. But he does not always think outside the box, which is the job of a philosophy professor. He is just too close minded and stuck to all his articles.
his tests are SO HARD. i'm an A student and fail every single one of his tests..he uses trick questions to confuse you. If you want a fairly easy gen-ed do nottt take this class!!
Highly recommended. Challenging, but reasonable. Smart and insightful. Humorous and candid. Great prof.
He is a pretty good professor for a lecture class, but i'd recommend going to at least most of the classes, because while he does posts the notes of the class online the class is pretty interesting, I had the class at 9 am and it wasnt to hard to to function the rest of the day after that class
I really liked this class in the beginning it was easy because I read the text. Once I stopped reading it got hard. Make sure if you don't understand anything ask in your discussion or go to office hours. This class was hard for me, but if you can understand the material you'll be fine.
Teacher is good, but horrible horrible TA's. Especially Lenhart-if you have this TA you MUST get a new one. He is horrible.
He is a very reasonable professor. To be honest as long as you show up to lecture and discussion you don't really need to read the book (at least not nearly as much as they think you should). The material is easy and so are the tests, essays can get a bit ugly though, thankfully there are only 2 the whole semester.
Very interesting high quality prof. really explains everything clearly and does not try to be tricky. Just show up for class and do the readings once and the A is almost a cinch.
Interesting class. There are two short papers, two midterms, and a final. The final is worth the majority of your grade, but he gave us the essay topics ahead of time so it's not too tough. The two midterms were all multiple choice and pretty difficult. My T.A. graded the papers pretty hard. Do the readings and go to class...or at least discussions
Amazing teacher, thought he was awesome
He is a great teacher. Really funny and clever. I enjoy going to his class. If you have the opportunity, take it.
Such a great teacher! He is always making jokes and doing things to always keep your attention!
Gill was so nice and he tries really hard to relate to students through his lectures. He keeps them funny, light, and interesting. I had no interest in Justice and Virtue, but this was my favorite lecture anyways! Do the essays. Attendance isn't that important. You really don't need to buy the textbooks since he posts the slides online...
I really enjoy his lectures. He makes them interesting, even if you aren't terribly interested in the class. He is generally funny and makes the lectures fun.
He is great at keeping you enthused and interested. Has great stories and jokes. His Clarity is crystal clear. Take the class, books are cheap $1-$3 dollars tops. Attendance isn't mandatory except discussions, TA's are helpful but grade is 3 papers, 3 tests and discussion attendance thats it
Awesome professor, he explains the material really well and if you go to class you will learn alot and get an A on the test.
A very interesting class on Justice & Virtue. Textbooks are cheap. He has a strict "no electronics"; wish more professors would do that.
Dr Gill is an amazing teacher. He is funny and interesting in lectures, and super helpful outside of class. I would highly recommend taking a class with this man!
The class is somewhat interesting, but it can go over your head a few times. Gill makes a good attempt to make the class laugh, and I generally liked him. The essays are completely ridiculous, because it's a 400 word limit and it takes at least 500 words to get the correct philosophy across. His tests are a piece of cake and the final is easy.
He is a pretty good professor....there's not a ton to the class. You sit and copy notes from a powerpoint the entire class. However, he presents the info in a clear manner, which makes things easier. A pretty good class, doesn't require that much work at all.
Didn't like this class at all. It was boring and pointless. You had 2 tests and 3 papers. The tests were really hard and my discussion teacher was really horrible. If you don't think philosophically don't take this class.
The class was not hard at all. 2 papers and 3 test (two of which were multiple choice). Pretty good lectures, which were clear and funny. Our TA, on the other hand, was super boring. As long as you take notes and follow the guidelines for the papers, you'll be fine. I'd take him again.
Gill is an awesome professor, and made philosophy interesting and fun. The class is not easy. We read a lot of very difficult texts, but he makes them very clear in the end. Hard class, but interesting and great professor.
Professor Gill is very passionate about what he teaches. He also loves getting everyone in class involved. Class was pretty challenging though. My TA was awful and graded essays extremely hard. I wouldn't really recommend this class to anyone who doesn't LOVE philosophy.
He's a good teacher, but gets upset if you use laptops or leave early during the lecture. The lecture isn't mandatory, so there's no reason for him to get mad. Only 6 grades, and papers/tests aren't easy. I wouldn't recommend this class.
Professor Gill is an amazingly knowledgeable guy. He's very passionate about philosophy, and very simply explained the hard readings assigned in this class. His class is not easy, however. With 100 points total in the class, there's not a whole lot of buffer room. Still, very interesting subject, and I love the way he teaches. I'd recommend it. :)
He's a good professor, doesn't take attendance but tests can be hard if you don't get the concept. Overall, he's good.
The content is difficult, but Prof Gill explains it very clearly. Attendance isn't mandatory, but definitely necessary to do well on exams because the readings are hard to decipher w/o his help. 3 papers, 3 exams. Not a hard class if you go and do the work. Prof Gill is a great teacher and a very knowlegable guy. Take the class if you like phil.
Class might be boring at times, and the discussion is not helpful either. Out of the two essays we had assigned, I got two D's, even after working my ass off. I was told to do the readings, even though the readings are 85% of what is discussed in the lecture.
Gill is a pretty nice guy. But the class is incredibly hard. Tests difficult and my TA was a VERY hard grader. AVOID THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN.
Incredibly interesting course. Gill is a very good professor, but this class is only for someone who is ready to be involved. Very small class and you need to have done all of the readings for discussion.
Every paper I got a C on but that was just becasue of my TA. I showed up to every day and failed the first test. Then I stopped showing up and got two B's on the next test. my advice is save your time and dont go to class and study some smart kids notes.
The class is boring and I've skipped it at least 4 times throughout the semester. The textbook is pretty much useless, so don't waste your money on it. Don't get me wrong. He's a good professor. You will earn an A if you're willing to put in effort to understand the materials, which i struggled a lot. The point is: get a good TA like Ian Evans.
Super easy class, don't bother reading the book. Go to lecture, listen, take some notes, and review before exam and you'll be golden, I got an A. Interesting subject too
PHIL 324 Law & Morality, is a very. interesting class, there are two papers and two test, which you should do well on if you go to class an actually pay attention. Gill was a great professor, I recommend this class.
Absolutely a great teacher! He makes the subject so interesting. You must do the readings and work to achieve the A. He is a very fair grader. I would highly recommend Dr. Gill.
Amazing Professor. Great in lecture and super helpful outside of class. A 400 level phil class is never easy, but this guy's teaching and enthusiasm make it worth the work.
Good professor, interesting subject, ridiculous class. Grades weren't entered first until after an essay, a test, and 3 quizzes (halfway through the semester). The essays are graded harshly and confusing terminology is used on tests. Reading doesn't guranatee an A.
Gill assigns readings that are never too hard to understand and always reviews the content in the lectures. The essays are based directly off of documents assigned and lectures. Not too difficult and definitely forces critical thought which, if you are interested in expanding your mind, is absolutely amazing. Love Love Love this professor.
The class is seriously super easy. I never do any of the readings and just go to the lectures, which aren't even mandatory. the tests are easy and essays really aren't that bad, there are only 2. Having a good TA makes discussions more interesting, but overall it's super easy and interesting
The class (as far as tests go) is easy if you attend all the lectures. You don't have to read because he goes over it so thoroughly. The essays are terrible! Tons of confusion, very little help, plus they are each worth 20% of the final grade. Class was boring and tedious. Gill is always behind on grading as well. Probably would not take again.
This class was a good class and he is a great professor. Essays are really simple and layer out for you but the tests are a bit difficult. Attendance is not mandatory but his lectures are interesting. Great class and TAs are very helpful.
Great teacher. Not an easy course (tests are difficult & essays are very specific) but Gill is extremely helpful. Lectures are interesting and he jokes around at times making them more enjoyable.
Pretty easy for a gen ed. Little to no homework, some readings you need to do because he has pop quizzes but other then that no homework. The tests aren't to hard but the essays are pretty challenging. Over-all easy class.
Very good teacher. The material was actually quite interesting and overall made the class worth taking. There are readings though which most of the time should be read due to some pop quiz (but they're very simple that you could answer them by skimming the reading).
Dr. Gill gives really good lectures, so attending isn't a bore. His tests and pop quizzes on the readings (only a few a semester) are SUPER easy if you have paid attention and written down notes. He has you write a few papers, but they are mainly restating the positions of the philosophers and your position, so really easy. Must attend discussions.
Lectures are really interesting and easy to follow, he is a strong encourager of in class comments and questions. Essays are challenging but scheduling appointments with TA's can get you an A on the two papers. Doing the reading is important for pop quizzes but they are fairly easy, he just wants to know if you have done the reading.
Doesn't post lectures online so you really have to attend lectures to know what is going on. Not hard if you actually pay attention even though it's boring.
He's a good teacher. Technology is allowed. His lectures re not posted online and attending class makes the tests and papers easier. Very helpful.
He's a good teacher. Technology is allowed. His lectures re not posted online and attending class makes the tests and papers easier. Very helpful. Reading materials is essential and makes class easier, some of them are lengthy.
I found Professor Gill's class a joy to take. I am not one for philosophy, but I found his lectures were the most useful to understand material. You can use your laptop to take notes for his class. If you read the material, and are able to understand what each of the philosophers think, exams and essays are extremely easy. Essays are content based.
Difficult tests. extremely specific to philosophers whose ideas overlap. Only grades are tests and papers.
Prof. Gill is an amazing teacher. Tests are usually straightforward and easy. Watch out for the essays, though. They're worth about 20% of your grade. I recommend attending the TA's office hours because they are the ones that will be grading your papers. I got a C on my first paper and did well on my tests, but that C resulted in a B for the class.
Such a wise and inspirational teacher. The people complaining are probably the ones that never went to class. It was my ABSOLUTE favorite. It opened my mind to so many new ideas and theories. The readings were interesting, and his voice was seriously one of the most crystal clear voices I've ever heard. I was so excited to go to class. TAKE IT.
He is a great professor, speaks very clearly and makes sure he clarifies the readings as well as he can. (The readings are difficult!) Do not make my mistake and skip lectures, you will struggle with writing the papers, which are a hugeeeee part of your grade! Tests are very hard so make sure you go to lectures to get all the help you can.
Very clear teacher and for the papers, he gives an exact layout of what he wants. also gives study guides for tests. the tests are kinda tough but they're alright if you go to lectures. go to lectures because there are random pop quizzes- i got a 0 on all of them though. definitely go to the discussion classes. i actually kinda enjoyed this class.
There is a lot of reading in this class and if you don't read you won't pass. Also the reading can be tough to understand so going to class is very helpful because everything is explained in more detail and the main points become obvious. There aren't a lot of pop quizzes but they are a big part of your grade because there isn't homework.
Go to the lectures and you will pass.
He is very clear in his lectures. He is very specific about what will be graded in papers assigned or in tests. If you listen in lectures you will get an easy A. I did not read any of the books he asked to buy, as long as you listen in lecture you will not need to read anything. I had no interest in philosophy but this class is great!
I looked forward to going to lectures because the professor made the subjects interesting and explained it clearly. For the tests and papers he tells you exactly what you should study or write so it's easy as long as you pay attention. I did not read at all, as long as you pay attention in lectures you'll get an A!
Take this class! Professor is clear and makes lectures interesting! Tests and papers are easy, as long as you go to lecture you will be fine. The professor basically gives you the answers to tests and essays during lectures.
I found this class to be very interesting so it wasn't hard to go to class. He gives random pop quizzes over reading for the night before but the readings are easy. He also drops two of the lowest quizzes grades. The work outside of class isn't hard. there is like 3 essays that write themselves and a total of 3 exams. I would recommend this gen ed!
Professor Gill was great a teacher! Topics were interesting, 7 pop quizzes ( but two lowest scores are dropped), 2 midterms, and then final. Also 3 major writing assignments, but nothing crazy. Readings are every night, but it's somewhat easy to not read & just get all the information from the lecture. Slideshows not online, & he goes kinda quick.
He is a good professor but it was hard to get a good grade. The only grades are reading pop quizzes, papers, tests, and participation in discussion. I went everyday and participated at least once a day in discussion and still got a C and 60% for participation/attendance. You must really participate and absorb the information to succeed.
I really enjoyed this professor and his class. However, he does give a lot of essays to write and they can get very specific! I lot of reading is involved and the tests are difficult if you do not study. I studied for about 3 days and barely managed to get an 80. The lectures are super interesting, overall a great class!
If you're looking for an easy A gen-ed, DO NOT take this class! The work load is not that much but there is a ton of reading and you have to be able to understand the concepts from the readings to pass the two exams (midterm & final) and pop quizzes. He doesn't grade essays easily, so if you're expecting to get an A make sure you work hard for it!
I wouldn't take this class if you are looking for an easy gen-ed. I'm finishing this semester with a B in class because he grades the essays pretty hard. I got C's on most of my short writings and normally I get A's in other classes. The midterm was also VERY specific in each concept (all MC) and the final is 2 essay prompts based on the readings.
I loved this class. It is not necessarily easy, but I definitely learned a lot and I actually enjoyed going to class and participating in discussions. The readings are not too long, and they are very relevant and interesting. I think anyone who is interested in environmental issues should definitely take this class- it is great!
Professor Gill is one of the best professor's I've ever had (and I've had many). He makes an effort to engage with his students and makes sure that every reading and lecture is worthwhile. I wish every class were taught by someone like him. His class is not an easy A, but if you only ever look for easy A's you don't belong in higher education.
This course I took with Professor Gill has to be one of the most interesting courses I have taken during my academic career. Environmental ethics is interesting, and Professor Gill teaches in a way that makes you think of all perspectives and may even change your own views. Straight forward grading on essays and exams. Pop quizzes that are easy.
He is not a teacher you want to take if youre looking for an easy A. He is extremely liberal and does not hide his bias at all, if you even mention a belief or opinion thats not extremist far left he discredits you and gets mad. He graded like a pretentious snob, definitely have to act liberal. Also some him scream at the top of his lungs at girl
