I loved Dr. G's teaching style. I always would try to be early because he did fun little warm-ups. I found him very approachable. Highly recommend him.
This professor wasnt my cup of tea. I just personally didnt like his teaching style. He stressed me out and didnt seem very approachable. A lot of his teaching habits reminded me of things high school teachers would do, like not let you sit in certain places of the classroom.
Great professor, I would recommend taking this class with him. The class is hard so showing up is something you should do.
Dr. Gilliam always teaches the class with so much energy and positivity which makes lectures really enjoyable. He genuinely wants his students to pass and is very approachable for help. Overall he's a really engaging and friendly teacher. 10/10 recommend.
I felt like a high school student in Dr. G's class. He wouldn't let us sit where we wanted, would single people out in class, and distract me during tests weaving the rows trying to catch people cheating. I emailed him about issues with grades syncing and I never got a reply. He didn't give enough time for quizzes or wrap ups. Would not take again.
This was my first term at OSU, but Dr. G was by far my favorite professor. He is very inclusive to all and amazing at hammering home the true foundation of calculus. I feel very prepared to move farther along the calculus series due to his teaching. His lectures are by no means mandatory, but I would recommend attending as they are very useful!
Pf. Gilliam 4 MTH-256 Pros:Class notes are helpful He tries Cons:Handwritten notes are in cursive He does single expls. of problems in class, when many are necessary due to special cases and diff Wastes class time on non-related openers Teaches like you are in HS. We only have 50 minutes, be snappy Does not know fundamentals or has diff. explaining
I wasn't sold on his teaching style at the beginning of the term, but he really grew on me. He gives example videos before each lecture which will be really helpful if you have time to go over them beforehand. He is also very open, and doesn't seem like he's hiding things or out to get you. He used a sound-effect board for our COVID class too XD
For the first term of remote classes, he made a great effort to make the class accessible and understandable for all students. There were weekly to-do lists, opportunities to catch up on missed work, and office hours directly after class. His lectures were funny and informational. Easily the best math teacher I've ever had.
Gilliam is arguably the best professor I have had yet at OSU. He is excited and engaging with the material. He makes complex concepts simple in explanation and is incredibly patient. I would highly recommend taking this course if you have the chance. I don't typically like math, but Gilliam makes it fun.
One of the best professors OSU has. Enthusiastic and makes the lecture as interesting as possible. Tries his best to help out students by answering questions, or spending time on topics the class is struggling with. Genuinely is a caring person passionate about math. Great Professor who loves what he teaches. Highly recommend.
Very upbeat and energetic, made the 9 am lecture enjoyable.
Incredible instructor, straight forward and approachable! Great at leading a zoom lecture and making it feel like a class room.
Professor Gilliam was so nice, but the amount of work in this class is actually insane. About 10% of the material on the homework is to covered in lecture, another 10% is in the textbook, and for the rest, you just have to teach yourself. I had hours of homework every night just from this class, I usually like math but this was so awful.
Dr. G really tries his best to make sure everyone succeeds in his class. Always willing to answer any questions and help you understand any concept. Plus he has a cool soundboard that plays sound effects during online lectures.
Countless small hard assignments with multiple exams throughout the term, very caring and a great teacher.
Dr. G is easily one of the best profs. He was incredibly nice, incredibly understanding, and very willing to work with each individuals needs. In an 80 person class he tried to remember each of us, he reached out if he thought you needed help, he was lenient with late work and gave full credit. At 10 am Tuesday-Friday, he was always joyful
Dr. G is awesome! Super funny and interesting, and a really nice and all around cool guy. Has a lot of energy and makes everyone feel welcome and included. Deadlines are pretty clear, and he wrote his own textbook. A lot of homework, but Dr. G really cares and is more than willing to work with students towards their academic goals. Thank you Dr. G!
I just finished this class as a remote class via Zoom at OSU and I have to say Dr. G was probably the best teacher I had all term! By far the best math teacher I've had at OSU. His lectures and notes are super easy to follow and very explanatory (and they are recorded/uploaded to canvas). He is very helpful and loves when people ask him questions.
I loved Dr. G he always took the extra time to explain things and made sure everyone understood the material before moving to the next thing. He makes lectures entertaining and doesn't assign too much work.
By far one of the most passionate professors I've ever had! Very caring and understanding with his students. Has good lectures but you will need to spend some time outside class for self-teaching, but that's just typical.
Overall good and entertaining professor. Only complaint is that sometimes he would move too quickly through his lectures without stopping to respond to questions or mistakes.
Absolutely my favorite teacher at OSU. Professor Gilliam is an amazing lecture professor and I took him for my fall and winter terms of MTH 251 and 252 last year (pre COVID). You can't go wrong with him, he genuinely cares about his students and does a great job lecturing the material in a very clear and interesting manner.
I took Diff Eq with Dr. G, and he made the material so engaging and his office hours were always super helpful. The class was asynchronous, and he gave out the material in a bunch of different formats (video, notes, textbook, etc.) so you could choose how you learned best.
Took integral calculus in Winter 2021 and it was a very very difficult course. The homework was incredibly overwhelming, to the point it was almost undoable. I do think the professor did an adequate job of teaching the course, but it is the hardest of the MTH25X series.
He spends most of lecture re-hashing the basics, and sometimes goes over the important stuff at the very end of lecture very briefly -- usually a day or two after the homework for that subject matter was due.
Hands down the best math professor at OSU. It feels like he actually understands what his students are feeling as the course progresses. By that I mean he, at perfect times, cancelled homework's or had slower lectures to verify everyone understood content. Also he's funny.
Dr G is my favorite professor in the OSU Math department. He allocates classtime to fully answer questions, teaches accessibly and succinctly, and is totally transparent about what will be asked on exams. His attitude is super fun and engaging. In my class, people clapped when he walked onstage! Highly recommend his MTH256 class if you can take it.
Let me preface this by saying that he is a great professor that cares for his students; however, I find that his lectures are very lackluster and could be more organized. Reading the textbook chapters and skipping the unimportant parts (basically just skipping to theorems) was more helpful. The first week of lectures is basically the make or break.
he is a good teacher very engaging. Used Knewton Alta for the online homework and only used the textbook for written hw. For KA, only gives credit for what you have done at due date, afterwards has to be 100% completed. was unclear. KA is 15% of final grade same as the final quiz, 15%. Knewton Alta hw takes forever to do unless you understand it.
Professor Gilliam is an enthusiastic and charismatic presence in the lecture hall. You can tell he loves teaching, and does it very well. I would say his lectures could be a little more organized, but he is very good about posting all lecture slides and recordings on canvas day of. Missing class frequently is not advised
Dr. G is a very good professor with engaging lectures. He was fairly heavy on the homework side, but if you do it, you will understand the course material better and score better on exams. One critique would be that some of the lectures felt unplanned or rushed. It wasn't terrible, you would just have to study a little more for those chapters.
Seems like he really cares about his students, does his best to amke lectures intersting, engaging, and fun. First good math professor I've had at OSU.
Great teacher as well as human being. Doctor G really pushes his students to be better. I myself am not the best at math but through out the term I felt Doctor G gave me the tools to succeed. If you take this teacher be ready for cheesy jokes and very informative lectures.
I recommend going to his classes in person, he's really kind and funny. His lectures help and he always answers questions.
The best math teacher I have ever had, at any educational level. He has a way of breaking down the complex into simple steps that are easier to do. Usually math professors tend to struggle with engagement, but the energy Gilliam brings to the lecture hall makes math more than bareable. If you have to take differential equations, Gilliam all the way
Provided awesome insight for STEM majors taking his math classes of how specific math applications are used in real world situations over a variety of majors / careers. He came into lecture everyday seeming genuinely excited to teach and inspire those in front of him. I took 252 after a gap of no math, and he helped me catch up seamlessly.
Every once in a while you get a teacher that is so helpful, instructive, caring, funny, and (in the best way) challenging that education turns into an inspirational experience. He teaches EVERYTHING clearly that will be on tests. Knewton Alta is tough but will help you learn the content. He emphasizes concepts and you genuinely learn. TAKE HIM!
Dr. G is fabulous, hes funny, teaches well and knows his math. He assigns a lot of Knewton Alta work but as long as you are up to date with those u should know the material pretty well. All the tests are based off of in class recitation worksheet.
Dr. G is simply unlike the rest. This dude brings amazing energy to every class despite his busy life, making class lectures super beneficial. Only had him for 111 but i'm sure he's a great instructor for higher level math. He understands and explains material MUCH better than my prof. in 241 lol.
Dr. G is by far one of the best educators I have ever encountered in my lifetime. Although integral calculus was definitely a tough course, Dr. G taught it in a way that was clear and made sense. Every lecture was energetic and he was so trigger-happy to answer questions. I was always looking forward to every single lecture. No doubt, take him!
Dr G is a great lecturer and gives his students plenty of resources to be successful in his class. Bi-weekly "Mini-Exams" are a great setup that I found less stressful than traditional course exam structures. There is a good amount of Knewton Alta HW assigned. Whenever I felt I was behind in this course I could catch up without being too stressed.
Professor Gilliam is an excellent lecturer and is really skilled at answering questions in a simple, easy-to-understand way. For people taking 252 this year with this professor- you will be successful if you use him as a resource by asking questions about homework (especially the written because that correlates to the test) in class.
Dr. Gs class is brutal essentially he got behind in the lecture and then didn't correct so our homework was constantly wrong and not on material we covered. he consistently gave out incorrect homework and had to correct it too late didn't give our ta's answer keys solved problems in weird and esoteric ways that our math tutors didn't understand.
Dr. G knows his stuff, but he presents the material too fast and tends to skip over some steps that he thinks are simple/basic, but as someone with a learning disability that made it super hard to follow his notes. He also grades written hw too harshly and inconsistently. The recitation ws are too hard & lengthy, & recitation isn't helpful either
Great professor who cares about performance!
This is the second time I have taken a class with Dr.G, and I've had the same issues with both classes. He's extremely punishing if you get behind in class. He constantly skips steps that would add maybe 30 extra seconds to the lecture, and in a class of 260 people, you're not quick to raise your hand if you're lost.
professor Gilliam does a fantastic job at making time during lectures to answer any questions by students. From my experience, the Homework and recitation content was harder than the test which got you prepared for the test. Expect a good workload but completely fine if you attend lectures. Overall a great professor.
Had Dr. G as my first math professor at OSU and it's hard to imagine how he will be matched. His lectures are very clear and give a lot of room for questions. You can tell he really cares about moving you forward through your college career as he will often give advice and things to prepare for upper level classes.
10/10 recommend! Very accommodating. Taught through the use of theorems and then immediately followed it up with example problems. Weekly quizzes in recitation but they are always fair. Tough 1st midterm, easy 2nd midterm. Great class.
Dr. G is awesome! His lectures are easy to follow and are overall very enjoyable and informative. He makes a difficult subject like calculus more digestible. Expect the homework and recitation work to be harder than what you learn in class but the exams will be similar to the difficulty of what you learn in class. Overall a great class!
He is an amazing teacher who wants his students to succeed. I struggled with the material, not because of him, just because it is a hard class but he will go out of his way to help you!
Really engaging lectures and takes time to answer questions in lecture. Workload includes 3 lectures, 2 homework, and quiz in recitation (can use homework as notes!) Homework is also reviewed in recitation so it is easier to finish and do well on it. Records lectures to canvas with captions. Clearly has a lot of energy and passion for this stuff.
Gilliam is very entertaining and strives to help students learn. Records and posts lectures/notes and is always very clear about homework, study material, and what to expect on the tests. Very good math professor in the department.
Dope Professor. Had him for mth 252 so excited to have him again. Difficult class but it is super doable with him. Just watch a youtube video maybe once a week to recap content. Impossible for him to get everything in with only 3 50 minute lectures but Dr.G is THE GOAT. Get's a little side tracked but such a spin on what is usually a dull subject.
Dr. G was a pretty cool guy but the way he teaches is really weird. He isn't the worst math teacher I have had but for people that really understand math they will really like him, but others who kind of get math won't do as well. To be successful in the class just do all homework and do decent on tests. The homework is way harder than the tests.
Explains concepts well, posts notes after class, charismatic, and gives good advice.
Dr. G is a funny dude and he makes class engaging. 1/4 of the class is spent answering questions. There is quite a bit of homework for this class but working with others makes it doable. Homework is MUCH harder than the tests. He is a little disorganized and will sometimes have problems on the homework that we haven't learned or are incorrect.
Dr.G was a solid professor. He played to his strengths well and taught the class very clearly. He was understanding to the student perspective on homework and tests and his tests were fair. To me, his conceptual explanations on differential equations were subpar at best, and the class felt like taking derivatives over learning how it worked.
Dr. Gilliam has been an amazing professor. I have had him for both MTH 252 and 254 and both times he has been one of the most caring professors I have had in college. He is usually available during his office hours and has often stayed after class for quite a while answering questions that I had. He also has pretty engaging lectures.
I took both Vector Calculus (MTH 254) and Integral Calculus (MTH 252) from Professor Gilliam. He is a professor that genuinely wants and believes in the success of his students. I would recommend Gilliam because he clearly explains concepts and helps students develop problem solving skills that they can apply to a variety of problems.
You learn so much from this class, and Gilliam is simply awesome, but beware it is 5 credits worth of work for a 4 credit class. A lot of it you have to do over the weekend.
This is actually a review for his MTH254 - Vector Calculus class, but that wasn't an option on the site. Dr. Gilliam is probably the greatest math professor I have ever taken a course with. Not only were his lectures informative, but he is a great person to be around, and genuinely made me learn so much.
Dr.G is fantastic! Would literally take any class from Gilliam. I absolutely hate math but he made lectures understandable and was very good at answering questions. Super funny guy. 10/10 recommend.
Dr. G is the best math teacher at OSU. He is so understanding and really cares about the material. While the math courses can be hard he works very hard to make sure everyone in his class has a good understanding of the material. He will always have students with the best test scores, and I wish I could take more math classes with him.
By far my favorite teacher at OSU. He knows his stuff and can share his knowledge in an easy way to take in. Take him please
Dr. G is an amazing professor!! He really seems to love his job and wants nothing but success for his students! I think he's great for most people, but for someone like me with a harder time processing the content, the pacing of the curriculum along with his high energy could be overwhelming at times (neither of these are his fault).
More of a review of 252, I went into this class expecting online lecture videos but instead it was youtube videos linked on canvas. When Dr. G did decide to make a lecture, it was really helpful. Written HW wasn't bad, but everything else blows. Would not recommend taking this course. A lot of the material that showed up on tests was not taught.
He's a great prof!
Awesome prof!
This class is disorganized and I find the lectures unrelated to the material we're tested on so I don't attend. The professor can't keep the class on task so there are often tangents on random topics. The hybrid information is more important than lectures. Nice guy and very good at speaking, it is just a poorly designed course.
This course is REALLY information heavy with lots of homework, both written and online. The textbooks are online, and lectures are long. He is very dedicated to his students, to the point where he realized there had been a grading error on my final grade and took the time to fix it a whole semester after the course ended!
Holy god I suck at math but this man really did his best to help me. Was going through family stuff and he was so understanding, gave me all my options for the course. Beware the content is really hard by the middle and end, but he is the best man for it. Office hours were genuinely helpful and he would ask probing question to get you there. 11/10
Dr. G, my math professor, is amazing! He made university level math so much clearer with his teaching style. He's funny and his office hours are super helpful too. I highly recommend him if you're having any trouble with math.
The goat of calculus
Listen, I am an Art History major and thought it would be really funny to take vector calculus since that is what I tested into. I would not have passed (Assuming I got at least a 12% on the final) if anyone but Dr. G were teaching it! Really funny and made the content super fun! The class is by far the hardest class I've ever taken though
Hardest class I've taken at OSU! Dr G. is one of my favorite professors. Very caring, humble, and tries to be as helpful and as clear as possible while giving lectures. He keeps emphasizing that all students belong in this class even if one doesn't pass. He cheers the class up during every lecture and has a great energy. Absolutely recommend!
Gilliam is the best math professor I have had so far at OSU. Vector calc is difficult, but he works hard to help students understand concepts and advocates for them. He encourages students to buy the book but there is no need. Sticks around after class to answer questions and makes lectures engaging and fun. Prepare for a lot of HW and exams!
This class was so difficult I wanted to give up so many times or walk out of lectures crying. But throughout every class this amazing professor took the time to answer questions, reassure students that they belong there, and make every little gesture to help the students to get through the term. Love this class!
Very hard class, but I am glad that I got it out of the way
Dr G responds quickly in the discord server and grade on time. His recorded zoom lectures are sometimes hard to watch because of volume issues.
You will be doing a ton of assignments. Dr. Gilliam does spend a decent amount of time fielding questions from annoying students which are only tangentially related to the course material because he is polite. I think he does a good job explaining concepts but a lot is up to the students to succeed.
I have had Gilliam for both MTH 111 and MTH 252(online over the summer). He cares about his students. He was really flexible with me when I had life things get in the way. That said, he tends to be on the unresponsive side if you ask for help via email. I also found that his explanations tend to be vague when you ask for help. Overall, average.
I took Dr. G for MTH 254, and he proved to be one of the better math professors I've had at OSU so far. Although we were often behind in lecture compared to other classes, if you worked hard he helped make vector calc do-able, and definitley cared more than other professors I've had. I plan to take him again for MTH 256 because he was great!
Gilliam was great, excellent at breaking down concepts and answering questions. Exams were very straight forward, make sure you do the homework it's often harder than the exams and helps your grade a lot. I enjoyed his lectures, he really cares and wants you to succeed.
Straight up: this is not an easy course. But as far as professors go, this is the best option. Dr. G has great energy behind his lectures and really cares about your success. Test heavy course so be ready to study especially for the cumulative final.
MTH254 is going to be homework heavy but Dr. G is exceptionally fair when it comes to homework and exam questions. His lectures are so good that if you go to class and do your homework you won't need to study much. He's very easy to reach outside of class too, so he gets bonus points for that. Definitely recommend him.
He's a super high-energy guy who can be amazing for class morale but at the same time, he can be a little flighty and jump through the material because bro is like permanently on 200mg of caffeine. He understands students' needs and wants students to live their lives !! He is better during office hours than during lectures, more in detail.
Gilliam is an amazing teacher. Lectures actually help for understanding the material and he is a very reasonable guy. By far the best Math teacher I have had so far. The class itself is hard but he as a teacher helped quite a bit!
Dr. G cares about the students and is always trying to help. I really enjoyed taking this course.
Dr. G is one of the best math teachers and best professors I have ever taken a math class with and I feel lucky to have randomly taken his class this term! I would happily take another class from him. He makes his lectures engaging and entertaining because of his enthusiasm for math, humor, and engagement with students.
Every lecture was a highlight in my day. Would 100% take again. He made math easy to learn and is very understanding of where each student is in understanding. Answers lots of questions in class and takes the time to ensure everyone is following along. Great lecturer.
One of the best professors at OSU hands down. Really funny, explains concepts clearly, engages the class and is always open to questions (though he does entertain some dumb ones) and is a very friendly dude. Class was a little tough but nothing unmanageable
His lectures were funny and overall great. If you stay on top of the work and notes then you will be fine. Keep in mind, he runs through class pretty fast so you will likely need to print out his notes or bring a tablet to do them online.
tapped in.
Dr. G is great professor and his lectures are easy to understand. Sometimes he can be a bit condescending if you are asking a more challenging question, but that doesn't really get in the way of learning the material.
MTH 241-E-Campus (not an option in drop down) Dr. G is awesome, he is very responsive to emails, and very willing to work with you. You will do great in the class if you follow the lectures and put in the work, he is generous with the grading, meaning if you miss a small part the entire question doesn't count against you.
great teacher and accessible through office hours. wants you to succeed in his class. one quiz, two midterms, and a really difficult final. i found it significantly harder than any previous test.
Had to drop this course because he refused to teach difficult topics in easy ways and overcomplicated it because "scientists don't use the easy method". Spends a lot of class time talking about himself instead of lecturing. Also, expects us to teach topics to ourselves prior to class as well as quiz ourselves on them. Not ideal for harder topics.
His lectures were really fun. I liked the way he explained topics, and connected the different things we were learning to make everything make more sense. The quizzes are pretty easy if you show up to lectures and recitations, and he gives very good study guides. As long as you show up and are doing the homework it should be an easy A class.
The classes is pretty straight forwarded and I thought his tests were pretty similar to study guides and reviews. However, I for Dr. G to be very condescending when it came to asking questions or asking how to start a problem. If I needed help, I often went to the MSLC.
Super fun class, would highly recommend Dr.G
