Best teacher I've had in any class. Absolutely wonderful. Two thumbs up! :)
Take advantage of all the extra credit offered! It probably adds up to about 30 points throughout the semester.
Great teacher!! Lots of extra credi!! Tells you exactly what you need to know for the exams with a simple "M" for memory in the notes. I would definately take him again if I had to.
Dr. Golde is great. I took him for 0110 and 0120.
awesome prof...definitly take him for 0110 and 0120...best chem prof at pitt
He's a wonderful British man!
Really funny in class, very patient with questions, and is present at some of the labs and recitations. But he beats around the bush too much concerning the topics and leaves out lots of info that you'd want & need for the homework.
Dr. Golde is a good professor. His midterm exams are pretty easy, but the final was difficult. He gives extra credit opportunities, and you get credit for homework.
He is such a great teacher and he's the funniest little man you will ever see! but really, he wants you to learn and do well and is ALWAYS there if you ever need to ask questions. plus he gives extra credit all the time...not that you'll really need it.
In lecture he makes everything crystal clear for you!! But his exams are tricky and he can be grumpy with questions. Has tons of extra credit, demonstrations, and computer goodies during lecture...I would def. recommend!

Dr. Golde makes every concept in chemistry easy to understand and retain. The workload is just enough to prepare you for exams, which are straightforward and totally fair. Can't recommend a teacher more than Dr. Golde - definitely take him if possible!
Definitely take professor Golde for chem 0110 and 0120. Many of my friends had the other professors and their classes were much harder. ALWAYS print out and take the exams from the previous years.. that's basically all i did to prepare for the exams and ended up getting a B+
Very nice man. class extremely easy. tons of extra credit.
not the great teacher everyone says he is. Decent, but not the best. Tests are tricky and lecture had nothing to do with the homeworks which had nothing to do with the exams. Read the book and pay attention in recitation.
I LOVE YOU GOLDE!!!! I wish your class would have been open for chem 2!!...
AMAZING!! take him and you'll do well in chem. best prof ever
Lectures are interesting and clear-as-day. The assignments prepare you well for quizzes and exams, which are fair and easy. Can't go wrong with Golde for general chem.
TAKE HIM TAKE HIM TAKE HIM!! Makes chemistry extremely EASY. Has a bunch of practice exams which help you predict how problems on exams will be worded. He's an extremely smart guy and gives help to those who need it.
Class was awesome! Golde is such a great teacher to have for chem. The only thing I would say is that I found him to be very boring after a while. You could not go to class, like I did, and still get an A for the course
Excellent teacher, explains the material well. His tests are fair- if you don't put any time in, they're tough, but as long as you know the material well, you'll have no problem on them. Overall the class is not very difficult. Plus his British accent is adorable!
great professor, managable class, easy A with minimal effort. reading the textbook is unnecessary.
great professor, managable class, easy A with minimal effort. reading the textbook is unnecessary.
Dr. Golde is a good teacher. I did not not learn a single thing from the class though because I already took a similar level class in high school. I think the tests are perfect- not too hard or easy. I would recommend - I think anyone who tries in Dr. Golde's class can do fine.
Dr. Golde is the best. His lectures can get a bit boring, but every once in a while he'll interject something witty that makes everyone chuckle to themselves. He posts past chem exams online, which are very helpful when studying. His tests are pretty easy as well. Plus he has an amazing British accent.
Dr. Golde is an easy teacher. However, you will not learn much at all. The lectures are a bit dry. He is big on conceptual stuff. I actually changed teachers because I ended up teaching myself all the material that would be on the tests. He's a nice man but could improve teaching methods.
Great teacher, if you go to class and take notes, you can not fail. If you took AP Chem last year, skip this class. Its too easy. This is the perfect class for people who just need to get a science out of the way. He is funny, and knows chem pretty well.
The best chemistry teacher there is. His class fills up very fast so grab it fast. He is funny and knows the material very well
He really hates to meet students during his office hours. His idea of tests is out of this galaxy. Different variations of the same test is unfair. His tests are total lottery. Avoid him !!!
Take Golde if you can. His exams are fairly easy and he teaches well. best chem teacher at Pitt
Despite popular belief, Dr. Golde isn't easier than all the other professors; however, the way he teaches makes the material seem easy. His lectures are extremely clear and so enjoyable (especially because of his oversized sweater vest and accent). wants students to do well, lots of extra credit, and well-prepared handouts for class and recitation
IMO, he's overrated. He is clear in his teaching and often humorous. But his tests require little understanding of material and simple memorization of "M" topics in notes is often enough, which doesn't help you learn much. He's not very approachable...if you ask him questions individually, he tends to be impatient and often rude or condescending.
He is funny in lecture and tries to make the material easy, but sometimes stresses relatively unimportant concepts while covering more important, but less stressed concepts on the test. He is very unapproachable and not very helpful outside of class, but he gives a lot of extra credit. Good for chem 110, but not 120 if you want to learn anything.
Definitely overated. Had Golde for chem 1 and 2 and learned absolutely nothing. I passed because of chem lab recitations. Lecture is pointless except for "M" topics. Tests are tricky and depending on which version of the test you get..u might fail. Most say he's a sweet guy but he's secretly an *sshole. Pre-med? Take a diff. prof!
had dr. golde for both chem 1 and 2. overall was a good teacher, helped you understand the information through a variety of ways. funny guy, too. gives tons of extra credit.
I love Dr. Golde so much. His lectures are so fun and understandable. Love love LOVEEEE him
GOLDE PWNS! HE ROCKS!
THE prof for chem at pitt
he's overrated.
I'm bad at chem but dr. golde makes it fun. He is extremely nice and helpful. Everytime I needed to talk with him he set up an appointment with me, He is a good guy, and if your good at chem you will get an A
Dr. Golde is extremely overrated. He seems like a nice guy because he's moderately funny during lectures and gives extra credit, but he is very unapproachable, doesn't answer e-mails, and is a disorganized instructor. His lecture notes make the concepts seem easy, but the tests are hard. Recitation was the only thing that got me through his class.
Golde is SO overrated! He seems nice at first and is usually funny in lecture but is very unapproachable, very unhelpful, and often very rude in person and out of classroom. He makes it seem simple but teaches u the simplest part of a concept in lecture then tests on the hardest part which u never went over in lecture or HW. DONT recommend at all!
BEST professor ever!
He is easy, but does not teach as well as he should. Tests are pretty straightforward. Lecture is annoying - spends so much time on things that are not needed, when lecture could have been done in half the time. Do homework, Do ALL extra credit, do practice exams, you'll be fine for tests then.
Dr. Golde is a very kind person, however, he tends to be very disorganized in his lectures and oversimplifes the information making it seem more like a high school class than a college class. Some people love him, but I prefer to be challenged.
This class very straightforward and Dr. Golde made great efforts to help students (extended recitations, study sessions, lots of extra credit, practice exams)Lectures weren't the most exciting but they were well organized and easy to follow.I would definitely recommend him as he seems to truly care about his students.
Homework to do every week. Doing it definitely helps in understanding. Tons of extra credit. Would recommend going to class to help understand all of the material covered.
By far the most notable general chemistry teacher at Pitt. His classes always fill up first. Teaching style is straightforward and his tests are fair. You really should read the book if you want an A. Class is interesting and attendance is important.
rrrrrr
Best Chem teacher at Pitt. His tests are very fair and his teaching style is straight forward. No tricks. HE also offers a ton of extra credit. Take his class
Tests were fair, homework easy, and lots of extra credit available. Overall I found him to be kind of scatter brained and I could not follow the notes when studying for an exam.
Pretty good professor. lectures and notes were way too simple compared to tests. Tests were fair but always tricky. Homework/quiz every week, extra credit is available. Definitely recommend taking his class compared to other gen chem classes i've heard about.
He points out all the main concepts in his notes with the use of 'M' topics. Be sure to study these. The homework helps with understanding the material. He offers tons of extra credit, it's easy so do it. You will be glad you did. Do the practice tests and read the 'M' topics for the tests and it should be easy. I got an A studying that way.
Amazing teacher. he bends over backwards to help his students do well, and you will learn a lot. hes also sooo cute! hes little and has an adorable accent. he should be anyone's first choice for chem
Best Chem professor at Pitt
I can't think of a better professor to teach this class.
I don't know why everyone is suggesting his class to take. I personally thought his exams were very tough. I've seen other chem professors' exams(Martucci and Foltney) and their exams were WAY easier and simpler than Golde's exams. Golde asks very confusing concept questions. Other than that, he is willing to help other students kindly.
Great professor. Very organized and he has M topics which tell you what is going to be on the exam. With extended recitations, study sessions that he teaches, and very clear class structure, I would highly recommend him. Cares about teaching and is very helpful.
Not extremely easy, but if you're good at chem you should get an A. I went to every lecture but looking back you do not really need to as you learn in recitation and the practice tests are pretty much the same things as the real tests. Pretty boring lecture though, but worth it
Michael Golde > All
Golde is the man for Chemistry. He is basically the Joe Paterno of Chem. His lectures become boring from time to time but he is easy. His practice tests are really good help, sometimes his multiple choice questions get confusing though. Math problems very straight forward though. Highly recommend
Yes, Dr. Golde is an adorable and tiny British man that wears oversized sweater vests. And, in lecture, the concept seem easy to understand and he puts and M next to topics to memorize for exams. However, out of lecture the notes seem disjointed and the exams are tricky- all multiple choice and lots of conceptual problems.
He is a boss. He isn't out to screw you over. Gives tons of extra credit, he's awesome, and he looks like a pterodactyl.
Lots of extra credit, but really mean in person.
Golde is a really awesome funny little old man. He is the best chem pro in pitts.
Dr. Golde is honestly the man. His cute little British accents and wide array of sweater vests are sure to win your heart over. The class itself is extremely interesting thanks to him and he is very helpful, giving lots of office hours, review sessions, and study group sessions. Of course Chemistry is pretty hard but with Golde, it's not so bad.
Golde is one of the best Chem professors on campus. During lectures he outlines what topics you need to know with his "M" topics (Memorize). His exams are only 15 or so multiple choice questions that are kind of tricky, but he gives partial credit on them if it is a "logical answer." Would recommend him, his sweater vests, and his accent any day.
He might look small and charming, but MEAN in person! He is so thorough, and wants you to be too. Exams not only test what you know about Chem, because they are ALL trick questions. Offers extra credit, though. Curves in his own weird way. Keeps you on your toes. Kills more trees than global warming.
Cute little old man, but very tricky tests. I didn't start going to his reviews until the end of the semester, but GO TO ALL OF HIS EXTRA HELP SESSIONS. if you put forth the effort then your grade will reflect it. definitely the best curving prof at pitt, and gives lots of extra credit. but he's tricky if you don't put a lot into the class.
His tests consist of very tricky questions. He focuses more on conceptual questions than actual math. Overall, good professor.
Golde should be your top choice for General Chemistry 1. He is clear in lecture and test question topics are not surprising but the multiple choice is fairly tricky.
He is a very good professor. Knows what he is talking about. Go to lecture and extra help sessions and you will do fine.
Golde is such a cute little guy. Thought his lectures were kind of boring at times, it won't hurt you if you skip here and there. Most of your learning will be done in recitation. His exams can be a little tricky at times but he's pretty generous with partial credit. Take him if you can. Somewhat hard work will get you an A!
Had him for Gen Chem 1. He is so cute and looks like a pterodactyl in his sweater vests. He was really organized and clear in lecture, and gave good homework problems. A bit rude in person. His tests were fairly difficult and the wording is always tricky. He was funny sometimes in lecture and liked to make jokes during experiments he did. So cute!
Golde was the best teacher I had ever. He would be your No1 choice of Gen chem. Very generous of giving extra credits. I just looooove him.
I had Golde for Chem 1 and 2; I didn't have a great background in chem and was afraid of it, but after the first week of Chem 1 I realized I had nothing to worry about. He is organized and passionate about teaching, wants students to succeed, and gives you all the tools necessary to do so. He focuses on concepts so you actually understand the work
Definitely a great gen chem teacher. His tests were pretty simple and studying aside from doing the practice exams was not really necessary. Attending lecture certainly helped as he is very clear and tells you exactly what you need to know in order to do well. Take him for chem 1 and 2 if you can.
Excellent teacher and lecturer. Knows his stuff so well he doesn't just read from the book. He actually teaches the sections he thinks are important and he teaches them really well. Lots of in class examples with chemicals. His tests aren't hard and the curve is generous. In my opinion the very best teacher for general chem
Golde's lecture is helpful if you are able to pay attention. Sometimes that's not easy in his class. My biggest suggestion is to use his office hours because he is a great one on one teacher and will help you understand the material really well. Also he is a fairly easy grader and will give you as much credit as he can on exams.
Background: Honors Chem & AP Chem in HS. Didn't have to study for the 1st exam, studied 4 hours for 2nd exam. Didn't open textbook until Chapter 10. Attended every lecture. Got a 90 on 1st exam, 84 on 2nd exam. Quizzes in recitation each week were easy. Spent 2-3 hours outside lecture each week on the class for homework using the solutions manual.
Good lecturer, funny, and VERY smart. You will absolutely learn from this man. His grading is generous-you will not fail. His exams are pretty tricky (A-J Multiple Choice answers) but if you know the material you won't have an issue. Probably one of the best professors at Pitt.
I wish every professor could have handled Gen Chem 1 like Golde did. I was given more resources to learn than I could have ever wanted, and I really got to understand the concepts. His exams are very fair (although multiple choice) and he is really generous with extra credit. If you are taking Gen Chem, take Golde!
Golde goes too fast in class and you learn more in recitation. Also, his tests are only 15 questions so that if you miss a small amount your grade drops significantly. I got a B in the class but it's not easy. On one on one he is also snippy and arrogant. I dont know why so many people like him...I am not taking him again.
I came in with no background in chemistry so this class was difficult!Goes slow in lecture but jumps around. He gives you a list of his "M Topics" before tests. Great idea to attend his extra help sessions! Dealt more with concepts then other chem 1 teachers do.Does curve but reading other posts I expectected a better one! Ended the class with a B
Golde is the best. I hated chemistry in high school and Golde made it fun and interesting. Considering a chem major now because of this guy. He always tries to incorporate in class demoes and real world applications of concepts. Tests are fairly easy and if you keep up with the material on a weekly basis you will do very well in the class.
Awesome class. If you complete the HW, do the quizzes, practice OWL and work through the past exams, you are going to get at worst a B. Fair, not easy, tests.
Golde is a good teacher, and seems to be a cute old man when he's teaching, but is not actually very nice in person as far as I can tell. The class is pretty easy, and he's clear about everything.
Golde is a great professor! If you the homework, do all the pratice exams and look at the textbook sometimes, there is absolutely no reason why you can't get an A in his class. He's the best.
Fantastic Professor! Definitely take him if you get the opportunity. Very clear and makes concepts so easy. Chem 110 was honestly easier than AP Chem in high school thanks to Dr. Golde.
Golde is by far the best teacher i have had for my 1 year at Pitt. Pretty easy, not so accessible for office hours but is so helpful. He lieteraly does everything possible to make you succeed in the course. He is not here to weed you out. Love him.
Easy class, practice tests online. uses OWL which is pretty expensive but means very easy hw
Golde is a great chem professor! He has all his past years exams online with answers and he uses the same type of questions. He also gives a lot of bonus which was helpful! Needless to say his class for chem 0120 filled within an hour for next semester.
Golde is a wonderful and funny guy he really wants people to pass his class. he holds review sessions for each chapter after the first exam he offers 25 extra credit through out the course.I asked him for extra help and he partnered me with a TA who met with me every week till the class was finished. I highly recommend his class!
I probs would have found the course hard but I got a 4 on the AP and was retaking it to help GPA It's obvious who has had AP or not by the set of high grades and low grades when he goes over grades even so he tries to help the kids with lower grades but I don't know anything about it because I didn't have to attend C. Johnson is awesome as a TA
Highly recommend. Besides the fact that he is an adorable Brit, he genuinely wants you to succeed. Tests can be a little tricky, but he offers some extra credit and you get credit for work shown on multiple choice tests which is awesome. Definitely Team Golde!!
Golde is an excellent prof. very nice and lectures are very clear. he tries to trick you in tests, but then gives partial credit on multiple choice questions so it evens out. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND.
Dr. Golde is hands down the best choice for general chemistry at Pitt. He has been teaching for some time, so he knows exactly what teaching methods work and which do not. He also knows what topics will be most helpful for the future, so he puts most emphasis on the most relevant concepts. He is always willing to help. I had him for chem 1 and 2.
Yes, the hype is absolutely true. Golde is by far the best chem professor at Pitt, if not one of the best overall professors in general. He teaches very well, and his lectures keep you constantly involved. He also offers a ton of extra credit to help bolster you up to that A. Overall I'd absolutely recommend his class, you won't regret it.
Organized but boring but chem 110 information isn't exactly exciting either. Tests are fair and gives credit for work. Definitely recommend him as a professor
Tough finals. Very conceptual based questions. First test avg was 85. Second test avg was 73.
I would definitely recommend this professor. He gives homework weekly which prepares you for the recitation quizzes and the two midterms. Do all the bonus because he takes whether you did them or not into account when calculating your grade. It will push you from a B+ to an A-. Buy the hybrid edition of the book new! He makes u use the online code.
Harder than CHEM-0110. Do the bonus and the CAIM. Use the old exams when studying for all the tests.
Dr. Golde really knows his stuff. He makes sure you learn the material, I found recitation and the homework very helpful. His tests are very conceptual but if you put in the effort they're not too bad. However, I found that he isn't the most approachable professor at Pitt, he has a bit of an attitude if you ask him questions about the material.
Decent chem 1 professor. His tests are very conceptual, there are some trick questions. Go to the review sessions he has after the 1st test, they are extremely helpful! Also, make sure to do every extra credit assignment, there's about 15 extra points which can raise you a letter grade.
Big Mike Golde is a great chemistry professor. Yes, you have to study and put time into his class. There's a relatively long homework assignment due weekly. Very doable and reasonable. Would HIGHLY recommend taking Golde for chemistry.
If you don't have a good chem background, you're better getting help from your recitations or going to tutors. If you ask him questions he's rude and isn't clear. He gives extra credit to the class and does study sessions for those who struggle which help! 2 midterms + final; I feel not enough time is given. I don't see what the hype is about him.
I really like how Golde teaches lecture. He writes on the blackboard rather than posting powerpoint on line and skimming through them in class like many other intro science classes. GOING TO LECTURE IS A MUST. Posts previous exams online. He seems like a nice man, but he is so rude if you ask him a question or seek extra help. NOT APPROACHABLE.
Pay attention to the demonstrations. He tests on the specifics.
I took AP chem in high school and understood the course material. Dr. Golde's lectures are great, but his exams were tricky. The wording of his exams made it harder to take and his exams are conceptual heavy. He gives partial credit, but 1 multiple choice question is worth 6 points.
Dr. Golde is probably your best bet for Chem 0110. Your grade is out of 600 points: 100 from recitation (quizzes + homework), 100 from lab, 100 (x2) from each of the midterms, and 200 from the final. I got an 89% and 76% on the two midterms, a 93% on the final, and ended the class with an A. Golde is clear, helpful, and offers tons of extra credit.
Sweet guy, tries his best to make lecture fun. His tests aren't that bad if you put the time in to study for them- treat his practice exams like the bible and get your hands on as many past exams as possible (be friends with your UTUs, they might have exams that dr. Golde doesn't give out). Without a doubt the best choice for gen chem.
I took AP Chem and I did not find the concepts he taught hard. Except when I listened to him explain them, I just got confused, so, I don't think his way of teaching chem fitted my ways of understanding it. He's very lenient with grading, though those points can only save you by so much.
Attend lecture, as the tests are easier if you understand his way of thinking. His grading is extremely fair. Take advantage of any and every extra credit opportunity. The points can really accumulate and bring your grade up a good amount at the end of the semester. A little condescending one-on-one, and sometimes chuckles at your questions.
Golde lectures at a fairly slow pace and in an understandable, clear manner. He writes main points on the board and indicates which ideas should be memorized. Thus, students need not scramble to take good notes, and it is easy to see while studying which points are key. A lot of fun, relevant demos, and he seems to care much about his students.
Enjoyed his lectures. They are rather straight forward. I thought he brought it down to a level that was easy to understand but still taught something. He writes everything by hand on the board, so attendance is pretty important. Enjoyed his class, I would recommend.
I had Golde for chem 1, and I can honestly say I've never seen a professor so devoted to their students. I'm not even in his course anymore and he's still helping me whenever I'm struggling in chem 2. He really understands the material and gets you to expand your brain when thinking about it. If you do poorly in his class, its bc YOU don't care.
I am not very good at chem, but Golde presented the material in a very clear way. He is also very charismatic! The tests are hard but he provides you with practice exams, and curves the final grades. I found recitation to be very helpful. There are quizzes and homework every week that goes towards your grade. Overall, I would recommend Golde!
Dr. Golde is absolutely fantastic. I've never met anyone who cares more about his students learning the material. DEFINITELY recommend for either Chem 0110 or 0120. He's actually really funny and interesting. He gives you the exams from each of the four previous years. I wish I could take another class with him!
He's a fantastic lecturer; it's very easy to keep up with him and understand what he is explaining. The tests are somewhat strange, but they are not difficult. Additionally, he posts old tests online for practice. He gives around 25 total points of extra credit too. There are weekly recitation quizzes and homework. I strongly recommend taking him.
He knows his material, and teaches effectively and gives a lot of demonstrations. He also grades you based on effort rather than what your score was, which can either help or hurt depending on priorities. A "C" is easily obtainable. But anything beyond you will absolutely have to work for.
He's the highlight of my day.
Dr. Golde is a great intro to chemistry professor. His class is very straight-forward. He gives lots of extra credit. He also posts old tests online which help very much. He assigns A LOT of homework but the problems are not difficult. I recommend renting the solutions manual. Overall, great professor that I am definitely willing to take again.
He is great! Very hard working. And his UTAs are also the most helpful.
It really seems like Dr. Golde loves what he does. He tries to make class as fun as possible, by doing little experiments here and there, but you HAVE to go to lecture. There are questions on the exams about things done in class. Overall, I would recommend him as a chem professor. Just remember that chem in general is hard and you have to try!
I had him for Chem 2 after having an awful chem 1 professor and I went from hating chemistry to loving it. his practice tests are exactly like the real tests and you get tons of extra credit so getting an A requires very little effort. I HIGHLY recommend him for Chem 1 and Chem 2. He is the best gen chem teacher at pitt. Sometimes scary tho
His tests are tough and not always reflective of the practice tests he posts. The tests are also on huge blocks of material, which makes it harder to study. It is important to go to lecture, as he throws in "Memorization" Topics in lecture that appear on the test and you won't find in the book.
Golde tries hard to make the material as clear as possible through a variety of examples. He offers a lot of extra credit - really he gives you every possible material to help. He offers review session and is readily available. Taking him for chem II as well because I enjoyed it so much.
Tests are tricky as all hell. You MUST know the information inside and out to do well on his tests. He is a very cute old British man, but this class is not an easy A. He does give you a lot of resources and extra credit - TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS. Read the chapters, go to class, do the homework and you should not have a problem getting a good grade.
Golde is a good professor. Unlike other professors, he WANTS his students to do well. He offers review sessions weekly and he is readily available in his office hours. Another advantage of taking him is the amount of extra credit he gives (helpful!). Also, the tests are tricky so be prepared to study. His class is pretty hard to fail though.
He is the worst professor for first semester chem. Instead of easing us in he just made the tests extremely hard that even my TA didn't even understand who is currently in organic chem. He can be really mean as well even though he may seem like a genuine man. Reading the book didn't help for the exams neither did going to his lectures.
Mr. Golde is one of the worst professors who has ever walked this Earth. His tests were extremely hard to the point where the T.A couldnt even understand what was going on. He also falls short of understanding and has a knack for applying difficulty to everything that he does. If you value your sanity, don't take this class
This class is the toughest class that you will ever take, and i say that because each test and each final change with each passing year. Your best way to survive is to honestly, not take this professor. Waste of a good portion of my life.
For me, the lectures weren't very helpful or clear but recitation definitely helped and so did the OWL assignments although they were really annoying. Doing all of his previous exams were very helpful in preparing for his upcoming exam. He also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities which can really help boost your grade
Goldie mean and snippy when approached. You must break the ice with him and you must, in a way force him to talk to you. If not, he ends convo. He shows a pleasent personality when lecturing. Practice tests are no where like the actual exam. Do the extra credit and do well in lab. For baseline C, you only need 50% on exams. Exams are stupid hard.
Doctor Golde is a good professor, and from the horror stories ive heard from other chem classes he is very good for the department, he offers a ton of bonus points (around 20) and all previous exams are online, do the homework and take good lecture notes (not online) and you will be fine, also pay attention to the in class demonstrations (on exams)
To be completely honest, I didn't get all of the hype for Golde. He wasn't the greatest to ask questions to and always seemed like he thought of his students as lesser beings for not knowing everything about Chem. You have to go hard if you want to do well on the exams. I got a 82 (out of 102) and a 102 on the two exams and still got a B+ somehow.
Dr. Golde is a very kind and funny Professor. He really made an effort to engage students in lectures however; as an instructor I feel as though he lacks clarity and the ability to adequately prepare students for exams. None of the homework, examples, or quizzes really helped prepare for the exams because the problems he chose were too simple.
Dr. Golde is really clear on what material you are responsible for (even gives exact page numbers) and he covers EVERYTHING in class. His lectures an demonstrations make sense. His tests do change each year, but he also supplies you with all the exams and finals from the past four years. If you keep up with your work, you will be absolutely fine.
If you are taking a chemistry course, try to get this professor; from what I have experienced and heard from other students, he is the best teacher of the basic Chem courses. His extra credit requires some thought but is very doable. The tests can be difficult but he makes it very clear when his office hours are which helps to counterbalance that.
Chem homework took a lot of time, but was absolutely essential to passing the class. He is very knowledgeable and is also very good at transferring his knowledge in an easily understandable way. Provides a very good foundation of chemistry. 100% would recommend.
Golde as a lecturer was pretty boring leading to low attendance and loss of attention. Gave ample practice problems and bonus. Grading is easy. The man is fun in lecture but very unapproachable. Overall very fair. Best bet for Chem 1 and 2. Take him and you're golden.
It's clear that he's been teaching for a very long time and knows his stuff, that being said, make sure you think through your questions before asking him for help. His tests are fairly straightforward and he does give quite a bit of easy extra credit to benefit the people who actually go to lecture.
He's probably one of the better chem professors. He's a little condescending when you ask for help, but he's a fair grader and gives a decent amount of extra credit. The final was much harder than the 2 midterms so definitely study long and hard. I'd recommend him.
Go to lecture. He's adorable and his lectures are incredibly well organized. You only need the textbook to do the homework problems each week (there are quite a lot). He does everything within his power to prepare you. The grade you get is entirely up to you. Offers a ton of extra credit, so DO IT. You'll regret it later if you don't
Awesome professor! Crystal clear lecture notes. He explains things well and gives a lot of practice resources. Take and study the practice exams really well because they are just like the tests. He offers a ton of extra credit as well. Great professor who wants his students to succeed.
Prof. Golde is so passionate about chemistry and it shows in his lectures. He communicates very well with students who might not enjoy or understand the material. He has a lot of extra credit opportunities, and gives partial credit on multiple choice if your work makes sense. He does give a lot of handouts, so stay organized.
Tons of extra credits! It's like he always want students to do more practice and give them out as extra credits. Exams are not hard. Easy to get over 85/100 if you study. Patient and willing to answer questions you have(if you can find him). Give out many extra sessionHowever, he is absolutely not so energetic and you need time to get used to it.
Dr. Golde is a baller. He offers more extra credit than any professor I have ever had. He's very clear with what you need to know for the tests and offers so many handouts/study materials that help so much when studying for the exams. He doesn't post lecture notes online, so going to lecture is a must but he's so adorable you'll want to go.
Golde's lectures can be very dry, but he makes it a point to go over specific things that will be tested in lecture, so regular attendance is a must. He knows his stuff, and you can really get a lot out of the class if you stay awake through the lectures and take good notes.
Dr. Golde is a very experienced professor. His lectures go over the basics and the homework and outside reading are needed to do well. His exams are very difficult and require a lot of preparation. There is no curve, but 30 points of extra credit given over the semester. He is very condescending and not open to "stupid" questions .
Loved professor Golde. Had to retake Chem 2 at 8am with him and he always made Chem as fun as it could be at 8am. Great guy super caring and has an adorable British accent. Tests are hard but fair
Dr. Golde is a great professor- so great that I took him for Chem 1 and 2. His class was incredibly easy. The only downfall to this is that I was definitely not prepared for the intensity of organic.
Golde is the man. If you've taken AP Chem in high school you will be fine for this class. Only problem was 8am sucked but Golde made it tolerable.
He is an okay professor but not the best. He will REALLY YELL AT YOU if you ask him some "too easy questions" or take what he said into granted. Sometimes he kind of said so but denied saying it afterwards and shouted at you. Most of my friends got scared by him once and don't dare to ask him questions anymore. Experienced in teaching in dumb ways.
Dr. Golde made me love chemistry. He does so much for each student individually, and really cuts down how much you need to know to what is necessary. TAs were the worst part of the class, but Golde was smart, funny, and tests were pretty fair. He gives some bonus and really steps out of the curriculum to make you like the subject.
Golde is the best!!! He goes above and beyond to show how much he cares about his students (He even handed out cookies during our final!). He makes you work for it, but your GPA will not suffer from his class. I personally do not like gen chem at all, and he actually made the class enjoyable for me. Hands down, take Golde.
Great professor! The material was a bit dry but he does his best to make the class engaging. He gives lots of extra credit over the semester but you really have to understand the concepts to get full credit. A's are 10080, C's are 7050 and does not give + or - grades (ie no B+ or B-). In his words, "you have to work very hard to fail my class."
Imma keep it real. The class is pretty straightforward. I got a 91 on the first test, 73 on the second, and a 96 on the final and got an A. Just do the practice exams, extra credit (30pts), recitation sheets, PRAY, and you should be fine. Golde is a interesting man though. He is not the easiest man to talk to outside of class. BELIEVE THAT!
Golde is a very knowledgeable professor but his lectures were often very disorganized and I ended up just studying from the book. His tests are also on the difficult side and your best bet is to take his practice tests and look over recitation worksheets. He has lots of study sessions but even then some of his test questions can come out of nowhere
A very good choice for Chem 2. He genuinely wants you to understand the material. His lectures aren't the most interesting but you gives you detailed notes and worksheets that are important for understanding the material. He gives over 20 points of extra credit. Exams are not impossible but you must put in the effort and study. Glad I took him
Probably the most overrated professor at Pitt. Do not take if you want to learn chemistry. If all you care about is learning a ton of random factoids and not synthesizing or analyzing any chemical content then you should take him. Tests are just logic puzzles and are a poor indicator of what you learned in chemistry. For memorizing he is the best.
I asked him a question once and he told me "go away." His lectures were unstructured and extremely bland. Tests didn't test comprehension, but rather if you knew random facts mentioned once or never. Each question on exams attempted to trick you. Every week we got so much homework, none of which prepared us for his exam questions at all.
Most overrated professor on campus. 1. You can't understand a word he is saying in lecture 2. his tests are nothing like the recitation quizzes 3. very unusual grading policy -- he doesn't tell you the ranges for each of the letter grades. Overall don't take him.
Overall great professor. If you go to lecture and do the homework the class is manageable. Posts many old exams online, complete and understand them and you should do well on exams. The first professor I have had who held weekly review sessions on Saturdays. He gives a lot of resources and sacrifices a lot of time to help students succeed, use them!
Cares about our understanding of the material. So if you understand the concepts and not just the facts, then you'll do well. Entirely reasonable professor and it's hard to get a bad grade, due to the breakdown of the class. Annoying homework. Will get a chuckle out of you now and then. Definitely the best option compared to other chem professors.
Most overrated professor at the school... He talks through difficult concepts too quickly and spends too much time on easy concepts. The tests are like mind games, since his goal is basically to trick you. There is way too much homework, that doesn't help at all with the exams. Do all of the practice exams and recitation quizzes before exams.
He is so overrated it's crazy. He talks through difficult concepts too quickly and spends too much time on easy stuff. The tests are like mind games, since his goal is basically to trick you. There is way too much homework that doesn't help at all with the exams. Do all of the practice exams and recitation quizzes before exams. 25 pts extra credit.
I enjoyed Golde's class. His exams are very difficult, but he gives 25 points of extra credit throughout the semester that boosts your grade. I got a 61 on the first exam, a 69 on the second and an 80 on the final and got a B. If you study and take good notes you'll be fine.
Not a bad person. Very nice and approachable. But, TESTS ARE HORRIBLE. Take basically any other chem teacher.
he is absolutely AMAZING. he has very clear expectations out of what he wants and he gives you all of his old test materials to study from, which are basically exactly what you will see on the test. He is a very interactive teacher and doesn't just go through slides, which helps SO SO much with the problems involving math. I highly recommend
Professor Golde is a great teacher and I learned a lot from the course. However, the exams are so ridiculously hard and are meant to trick you and make you second guess everything you know. He gives extra credit and does post his old exams, but they dont really help as he finds new ways to incorporate tricks into test questions.
Weekly quizzes in recitation do not prepare you for the exams. Weekly homework also does not prepare you for the exams. He says his exams use "logic" but it is rather a game of can I understand his difficult wording and get around him trying to trick you. The exams are not comprehensive of your actual chemistry knowledge!
I had a horrible experience studying for several hours the week before an exam, doing the old practice exams and still failing because of the ridiculously tricky wording of the questions. lots of extra credit and hes a decent lecturer, but the tests are still absurd. There is also an unbelievable amount of homework for how little its worth (1.5?)
A very fair professor. He gives a lot of extra credit. Some of the conceptual questions on exams can be tricky, but his mathematical questions are very easy. He is a great professor who makes jokes in class! definitely would recommend!
do NOT take anyone else for chem 0120!! he's an AMAZING professor, everyone else is a hot mess. exams can be tricky, but provides four old exams before each exam so you know exactly what to expect. fair and lots of extra credit, like 20-30 points. lectures are good, but you will need to put in extra work and practice besides just attending lecture.
Professor Golde is great! His lectures are very straightforward and he provides demos which helps your understanding of the material SO much. Yes, the tests are difficult, but pay attention to lecture and do the practice exams and you should be fine. Hell definitely manage to get a laugh out of you every once in a while! Would totally take again.
Golde is a good lecturer if you're able to pay attention because they get super boring. It is very easy to zone out and scroll through social media instead. His exams are super hard because they expect you not only to know the material but be able to answer his riddles. However, he offers like 25 points of extra credit which is a great grade boost.
Dr. Golde gives solid lectures and they can be very engaging. He also does a lot of demonstrations which make material more understandable. However, the exams are super difficult and you must really understand his wording to do well. I learned a lot, but I don't think my scores are representative of my knowledge. 20ish points of extra credit too.
Good lecturer, probably one of the best at the university. However, his tests are really hard compared to the quizzes he hands out. He'll hand back old exams with the answer key but without his explanation of how to work through the problem, studying them is real difficult. To the point that it feels like his exams aren't indicative of content.
Great Chem 2 teacher, wouldn't want anyone else. His tests are hard but you leave the class knowing your stuff. Study and do the homework and you'll succeed. Also, watch out for him chucking dry ice.
Golde is amazing. Chem 2 is going to be a hard class no matter who you take. Many exams from previous semesters are made available for practice.
Golde is one of the best gen chem professors I've ever had. Tests are really hard and tricky but are still fair. Makes you memorize a lot of information but most of it is pretty intuitive. Lots of homework each week but it helps a lot w/ understanding the material. Quite the personality and made for an amazing semester.
A lot of homework but the homework is actually helpful for learning. Some difficult tests but the extra credit puts it in a pretty fair curve. One of the midterms were kind of unfair and a lot of random things you had to memorize which is kind of dissimilar to other gen chem topics. No midterms are dropped and there are only 2.
Golde is a really good lecturer & teacher. He makes tough concepts seem easy, &the notes that I have from that class are amazing. I learned alot from him and recommend him!You are graded by few things & have to memorize some tid bits of info, but he offers 25 points of bonus, which is 4% grade boost since the course is out of 600 points. Take him!
Dr. Golde has to be one of the best chemistry professors that I have ever had. You can tell that he really knows the material well and has perfected teaching this class. His midterms and final are all multiple choice with some show your work. Read all of his questions on exams very carefully because he pulls some little tricks in the questions.
Golde is a really good teacher, but his tests are very challenging. I would take him again.
Golde is great. He loves teaching and has so many ways to get help in class if you are struggling (office hours, extra recitations). Creates great study guides/outlines for his tests and has past exams to study with online. Very organized. Has short sapling set and textbook homework due each week. Lots of extra credit in place.
By far the best option to take for chem 2. If you do the homework, sapling, and extra saplings you will understand the material well-- but you will only do well on the exams if you study the past exams hard to get a feel for the tricks he pulls on them. Put in a good amount of effort directed at past exams and his review sessions and you're set.
Really good teacher who emphasizes the most important material. I thought his class was very difficult, but he was a great choice as a professor. Frequently held Saturday review sessions.
He is the best professor I had during my freshman year if you are looking for learning chemistry 2 with good professor, Dr. Golde is your choice. His class might feel homework heavy, but it is graded leniently and the TA's are amazing as well. You still need to work hard to get those extra credits and success in the class
I really thought he was a helpful teacher. I didn't do so well because chem is hard, but it wasn't because he was a bad teacher. Good class. Take him.
If you want an A in chem 2 take Golde. The way he sets up his recitations is engaging and set you up for success on his tests. I think his lecturing ability is overhyped. I could barely understand him and he was boring. I eventually started skipping. Still ended with an A because of the 25-30 extra credit points!
Ungodle over rated. Extremely nice guy, but 16 question multiple choice exams with choices A-I? absurd. I would tutor kids in other classes with teachers that are considered far harder and they would get As, where I ended with a C+. I am not the best test taker, but his ambiguity was off the charts.
Definitely the most knowledgeable professor for Chem 2. He's super passionate about what he teaches. His tests are hard but if you study old exams (he gives you a ton of them) you'll know what to expect. Gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Also homework (textbook problems) is a portion of your grade and it helps you study!
Dr. Golde is truly an amazing professor. He's been teaching this course for longer than most of us have been alive, and his passion for chemistry is unparalleled. Yes, his exams might be difficult... but you'll be glad to have Dr. Golde as your professor. Extremely organized and dedicated. Provides many resources for success. I greatly respect him.
He was an okay professor. His lectures were very dry and boring. Lots of bonus points and it makes it almost impossible to fail. Quizzes were very easy but the midterms were very conceptual based. Lots of homework as well. He gives Sapling homework along with written homework. Textbook is online and free. Golde is one of the better Chem professors
Personally, I loved Dr. Golde. While his lectures aren't the most interesting, the notes he gives are so clear, detailed and very relevant to what exams will be on. His exams are very hard but he gives you plenty of resources- so many old exams, etc. which makes it possible to do well. Plus tonsss of extra credit! And hes also adorable
Golde was a great choice for Chem 2. He's not only adorable, funny, & cares a lot about teaching but it's easy to succeed if you put in the work. He gives tons of extra credit (30 points of it) & the hw is heavy but prepares you & forces you to learn the material over time. He gives you old tests/finals over the past few years which is so helpful.
I love this man. I would take him again and again if I could. He does demos in classes and takes a break halfway which is so helpful with the heavy content. He does everything he can to help his students pass. He responds to emails quickly and with much detail. I would recommend him everyday to anyone.
Golde is a great choice for gen chem. I am NOT good at gen chem in the slightest but was able to get an A- in gen chem 2 because of him (I got a B in Fortney's gen chem 1). He has good lectures and is a very cute old man. He can be condescending at times so just ignore it. Just take good notes and DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS AND ALL EXTRA CREDIT.
Golde is a great teacher. He gives you lots of resources, practice, and all the tools needed to succeed. With that being said, his tests are HARD. Substantially more difficult than recitation quizzes and homework. This class is by no means an easy A, but I definitely learned a lot. He gives a lot of extra credit which helps cushion low test scores!
Golde is a great choice for Chem 2. He is very kind and cares about his students, though his class is not easy by any means. The tests are very difficult, but if you take good notes in class, read the textbook, and utilize recitations, you can do well. Attendance isn't mandatory for his class, but it's really helpful to be there, and to take notes.
Dr. Golde is amazing and he's one of my favorite professors! He's so passionate about the material and he does a great job explaining difficult material. His tests are not easy, but if you go to class, take notes, and practice enough, you can do well. Definitely take advantage of the extra credit opportunities and all the resources he posts online.
He's overrated. Lectures are extremely boring. Exams are very difficult but at least he gives practice exams. Do all (25-30 points) of the extra credit.
LOVED him & his class, I already miss not having him as a prof. He's so sweet & teaches the material well by writing on paper in-person (online he went through his pages with us in detail as if we were in class) & he always uploads the pages online. We had 2 exams (100pt) and a final (200), & weekly HW (part of recitation grade). I recommend him!!!
Overall, good choice for gen chem 2. A bit overrated but he has a cute accent and is a caring dude. Lectures are a bit unorganized but he's enthusiastic about chem so that's a plus? He gives out a lot of extra credit. Exams are not easy but simulate in-class work very accurately. He grades exams sometimes by hand by himself, impressive!
Hes a good teacher but the practice finals are nothing like the final he will give u. The final will be hands down the hardest test you ever take; harder than my physics final.
Mr. Golde is the worst chemistry teacher I have ever had. I took Chem 2 with him and did well all throughout the year. However, I only did well because I taught myself the material. The actual final was NOTHING like the previous finals. It was extremely hard for no reason and half of the problems were never taught.
Worst chemistry prof I've ever had. Makes general chemistry so much more complicated than it needs to be. Expect to spend hours every week on mandatory assignments that count for basically nothing. You'll take two impossible exams and a final which will determine your final grade. Worst class I've ever taken, and I'm usually an A student.
STAY AWAY IF CLASS IS REMOTE. To make sure that no one cheats he makes his own exams, but this makes the exams impossible to study for. Nothing is curved so if you don't do well on his tests you can't do well in the class. I would study for 1-2 weeks ahead of time and still get D's. I also found that he didn't treat students with respect.
I thought Golde was alright. Maybe a little overrated, but I feel that he is better than the alternatives. I thought he was very thorough with his lectures and explained concepts really well. The exams are tough, and you have to study and practice a LOT. The final was WAY more difficult than any practice exam he gave and was a slap in the face.
Taking Golde online was rough. Exams were very hard, some questions had really weird wording and felt like riddles. Decent lecturer, but not very receptive to questions. Seems like hed be a lot better in person tbh... though he isnt a bad choice given the alternatives. We also got only 10 points of extra credit, not 30!!
PLEASE do yourself a favor and stay away from this class if it is remote. We had only 10 pts of extra credit so the curve was basically non-existent. Doing good on exams was a matter of understanding his tricks; so you could know chem but still do bad cause he made everything a riddle. Studied for weeks but none of the practice materials/hw helped.
Golde is a really good at explaining things and he always had nice examples or simulations to show us to help us understand. His exams were extremely difficult though. Read each question VERY CAREFULLY or else you will be tricked. He could be a bit harsh if you asked a question he thought wasn't good.
This was the hardest class I have taken at Pitt. Your entire grade is two extremely difficult tests and an impossible final. I am an honors student and am on the verge of passing, I have never had this kind of experience before. His lectures are boring and useless and every test question was a riddle. Don't take this class unless you like crying.
Chemistry 2 is a very difficult course, especially online. However, I found Dr. Golde to be an amazing professor. He definitely knows what he is talking about and provides a lot of homework, reading, and practice for each chapter. I think he is a great option for a difficult course. You will leave knowing chemistry 2.
Dr. Golde is a sweet lil British professor but his class is VERY HARD! Weekly quizzes require studying, homework is lengthy, tests are super hard but you leave the class well prepared. His tests are very hard and require so much preparation just to pass. Luckily, Golde gives extra credit but those assignments are graded harshly as well.
Recommendations on getting an A: Before weekly quiz, redo homework and make 1-page study guide for notes. To prepare for exams, start 3 WEEKS EARLY if you want to get an A. Review notes/redo EVERY homework assignment/recitation worksheets, quiz questions for EVERY CHAPTER. This process sucks so bad but if you want that A, u gotta die a lil inside;)
Not a good choice for online learning. Tests are impossible and hard for no reason. We did extra material and chapters than the other chem 2 classes for no reason and Goldes is definitely the hardest chem 2 professor by far
Golde is just an incredible professor, a real gem! He truly loves chemistry and wants each and everyone of his students to succeed. His tests will challenge you slightly, but he goes over all the material and does not throw any curveballs on the tests. I couldn't recommend Golde any more. He is one of Pitt's finest!
He is definitely a good teacher but his tests are close to impossible. He will make you work for it. Work like a dog for it. His tests are weirdly worded multiple choice questions with options A-H so every mistake you think you can make will lead you to one of those answer choices.
The exams were basically impossible, and our class got nowhere near the amount of extra credit other people said we would. I would not advise anybody to take this class especially online.
Spent most time outside of class studying and did well on first exam. As work piled up and the material got harder throughout the semester, exams were harder to prepare for. Study like there's no tomorrow (time the practice exams). Dr. Golde is very knowledgeable about the material so use him as a resource. Lectures fast but content-filled.
Golde is passionate about chemistry but I was never able to stay engaged in this class. He might be better in person though. His exams were very difficult and took a lot more time to prepare for than most people have available. His recitations are mandatory but they were pretty helpful. Didn't get as much extra credit as other reviews said
His lecture were super boring and he was rude sometimes if you ask a question he doesn't like. He also didn't use power point slides he would write out the lecture notes and scan them and just zoom through them and read them in class and refused to upload them until he was done with them. The exams were riddle like and hard.
Golde has a British accent, which will distract you from the fact that his lectures are incredibly confusing. It's like he knows chemistry, but can only explain it at a level that was beyond me. I spent a lot of time revising outside class. Fortunately he's pretty forthcoming with previous exams and his new ones usually don't deviate from old ones.
Dr. Golde is a good person however his class is very hard and exams are so difficult. There are weekly quizzes, two exams, and a final. I do not recommend taking him if you are concerned about your gpa.
Golde is a sweetheart, he wants his students to succeed, offering explanations in office hours and answering questions at points during lectures. He provides lots of resources (ie. practice tests) for his exams and I found them to be fairly written tests. Can be a bit boring in lecture, but maybe that was Zoom's fault. Solid choice for Chem 2.
Golde was clearly very passionate about chemistry and included fun video demos in his lectures. I found him to be pretty funny, but kinda boring at times. The first two exams weren't too hard and similar to the practice ones, but the final was different from the practice and difficult. Other grades included weekly quizzes & hw (drop the lowest)
Literally will just make up grades. Normalizes grades, doesn't have an accurate canvas or syllabus, lied about the amount of extra credit we could get, MAKES UP GRADES FOR PEOPLE WITHOUT LAB THAT YOU WILL NEVER SEE! Terrible teacher he just scrolls through a pdf of notes that make no sense. Your grade will 100% rely on tough exams and nothing else.
Do. not. take. Golde is the most confusing prof ever: in the way he grades, his exam questions, everything. Exams are INSANE for no reason. HARDEST CHEM PROF FOR CHEM 2 BY FAR- DO NOT TAKE IF GIVEN THE CHOICE. Also difficult to calculate your grade during the semester because everything is ambiguous and normalized, he makes things up.
Golde is a great choice to prep for any pre-meds out there. The way he makes you think on the exams prepares you for the higher level thinking of courses like O Chem and the MCAT. Definitely a challenge but will help you in the long run. He curves at the end and gives extra credit. Grade is exam heavy so do the practice exams!!!
His test questions have minimum 6 concepts per question. Sometimes if we argue with him and explain why our answer was right he would give us points back. The most ridiculous chem teacher ever. Usually chem teachers say there are many ways to get the same answer in chem, but in his class theres one way to get many answers. Dont take him.
Spring 2021. Definitely not an easy A but if you show up to lectures and study well you should be fine!
3 tests and a final account for 2/3 of your grade. Decent curve but I felt there was a lot of useless information being taught in the class. The questions on the practice/tests are ridiculous tho. plenty of practice resources. A lot of extra credit. Lectures made me realize why kids skip
Weekly homework assignments and quizzes + 3 exams (including a final) make up your grade. The class isn't very easy, but Dr. Golde gives a lot of scaffolding on the homework assignments and posts old exams for review. He also offers extra credit throughout the semester. His lectures are informative and thorough enough to not read the textbook.
No Powerpoints. Gives slides & written notes from lectures, including "important concepts" that you need to memorize. He provides old exams, and all the quizzes to practice w/ answers. Homework questions are a combo of Achieve, Book, and old exam/quiz questions. He basically hands you everything you need to know & read. I didn't memorize enough lol
All exams are extremely difficult. He refers to things you need to memorize as "M topics", which is almost everything. "He asks things that you wouldn't be asked to do ever in chemistry"-My TA. He's taught this class for 40 years but isn't good at it. I have no doubt he knows chemistry, but he doesn't know how to teach people without a PHD in it.
He is literally so cute, and everything about him is great. I think the only thing I didn't like was that his notes are super unorganized, and it feels like it's just a list of information. He does do M topics, which are like concepts that you have to memorize for the test, so you know what you need to know for exams.
Note- chem is my hardest subject. Golde is so good at explaining and taking time to work through many examples at a slow pace during lecture. VERY easy to meet with and get help from. Practice exams that mimic exactly what real exams are like. Is engaging in lecture and does a demonstration every class. Cares a lot about climate change.
Golde is probably one of the better choices for gen chem you'll find at Pitt. His lectures are average; you can get by without them if you study the material really hard on your own, but you'll do better if you go. Exams could be pretty confusing but seemed fair.
Loved Dr. Golde! He gives us everything we need to succeed. Tons of extra credit opportunities, 4 practice exams for EACH exam/ the final so there's plenty of practice problems and a list of topics to memorize. There are also a bunch of office hours and he makes private appointments too. He's so funny and does experimental demos every class!
Dr. Golde is a sweet old man. He teaches through writing notes on the doc cam which are later posted. He gives extra credit throughout the semester and has multiple practice exams for the 2 exams and the final. Overall, he is very organized and a great teacher. The homework was helpful for practicing the concepts learned in lecture.
Though I didn't receive the grade I wanted, Golde is not to blame. He is a very sweet guy, gives extra credit, and provides his students with plenty of resources. The most difficult part of the class was the tedious conceptual questions on the exams, but these concepts often reappear throughout the semester. Also, his lectures were easy to follow.
Chem 2 is definitely a difficult class, but Golde is a fairly good professor. His exams were pretty difficult just because you need a conceptual understanding of everything, but he gives you "M" topics so you know what to memorize. His homework is also pretty difficult but the recitation quizzes aren't too bad if you pay attention.
Dr. Golde was very sweet. His lectures were very informative and easy to keep up with. The weekly homework was difficult, but didn't take super long. He offers extra credit that isn't too difficult. There is no curve and his exams are difficult, but if you study the class is definitely manageable.
Dr. Golde is really sweet! I found his lectures easy to follow. He posts his notes afterwards, but I wouldn't recommend skipping. He gave a lot of extra credit (around 10+ pts.) over the semester. I studied a lot for the exams, which were difficult, but the past exams he posts are really helpful. There are two 100-pt midterms and one 200-pt final.
I really liked Golde for Chem 2. He only has two exams and a final, but there is also homework and he offers a lot of extra credit. Some of the exam questions can be difficult, but overall, he's good at teaching the lectures and as long as you study the concepts and practice questions from lecture, you will be fine.
Golde taught me the most I have ever learned in a course. The exams were hard but prepares you very well.
Michael Golde was a good teacher, but I got bored a lot in class. I went to class every day, but I think I could have just studied his lecture notes that he posts after ever class and done the homework and still receive the same grade. He was helpful if you needed it and he was such a sweet old man.
Professor Golde is easily the best CHEM0120 prof. He gives a ton of extra credit and his exams are similar to his old exams, which he gives you to study. The lectures really aren't that bad, maybe a bit dull if you're not interested in chemistry, but he adds in fun examples and demos to make it more interesting. He's very sweet and is a great prof!
Dr. Golde was sweet but his lectures were dull and hard to pay attention to, and his notes were confusing sometimes. There's a ton of homework which isn't worth much, but he does give extra credit and partial credit on exams. The wording of his exam questions were also very confusing sometimes. Final grading criteria was also not very clear.
Decent lecturer; marks important things with an M (almost everything is marked though); online savvy for an older guy; UNCLEAR grading policy; 2 exams & final & weekly homework; taught a lot of info but manageable; didn't read the textbook lol; attendance not mandatory; 4+ easy extra credit opportunities ; I dislike chem so not a glowing review lol
Highly recommend! He is very nice and gives a lot of extra credits!
I will hype up Dr. Golde until the day I die. I didn't have a strong chem background, and Dr. Golde completely changed that for me. His workload is very manageable, he posts all his old exams as practice (and the format DOES NOT CHANGE!), and he outlines all *necessary* material (both the textbook and from class). READ THE TEXTBOOK!
Golde is a very good chem professor. He uses a lot of real world examples in his class and does a lot of demos that can help students understand what he is talking about. He gives extra credit opportunities. His tests are a little bit difficult as there are not that many questions for a lot of points.
Dr. Golde is a good professor, but overall the class itself is very difficult. There are two 100 point midterms and then a 200-point final which is about 30% of your overall grade. The tests are very conceptual and it is mandatory that you truly understand the concepts well. It is important to mention he gives EC points and there is a small curve.
Dr. Golde is worth taking a shot at. His class has a great structure. If you're a bio/chem/premed student, GO FOR him if you can. I would say he is the best professor for Genchem. You can learn things from him and a good grade is not that tough to earn.
Completely conceptual, nothing like the other gen chem profs. If you're only good with very nuanced conceptual questions then this is the prof for you, if you're like the median scorers (60%) when try Bell over him (and thats saying something).
Dr. Golde is very sweet and obviously cares, but his class is difficult. I mean, it is g. chem 2, but his lectures are very dry and I did not attend class for the last 7-8 weeks and still believed I would have received the same grade even if I attended. Do his extra credit and old exams and you'll be set. There is NO CURVE! Grading scale is unclear
Lectures were confusing to me, but the way he constructs his hw is masterful and I would clearly understand the topics by the time I finished my hw. Didn't read a single thing from the textbook. Also stopped going to lectures halfway through the semester and just relied on the notes uploaded to Canvas. He's slightly overhyped, but still the best.
Very achievable to get a B or higher in this class. The grading scale was unclear, in terms of diff between A- to A things like that. 400 points out of 600 are from testing (two 100 points and one 200-point final). Tests have things from class (demos), textbook, and lab, so attend lectures + read textbook. old practice exams are very useful.
Nicest chemistry professor at Pitt! Would 100% recommend him, he is very sweet and understanding. There are also a lot of extra credit opportunities.
was super sweet old man that definitely knew what he was talking about. however, was very difficult to hear him. he wears a mask and mumbles, so listen closely. he posts his notes, but there's really no structure to them and they don't have good practice problems. so write down ALL of the ones from recitation and do practice sheets.
Very big step up from the Chem 1 professors. Actually teaches and explains material to students. Exams aren't too bad and the recitation quizzes help to prepare you pretty well. My only real complaint is that the homework was fairly long every week. Plenty of extra credit opportunities as well. Overall pretty good professor.
Dr. Golde is an absolute angel, best Gen Chem 2 professor. He provides so many resources to help you succeed - detailed lecture notes, partial credit on exams, EC, and more. If you like conceptual exams that actually make you think, go take him! Keep in mind it's not easy and you gotta use the resources given to you and put in effort to succeed.
Pretty low stress class.Consists of 600 pts with 2 100pt exams,a 200pt final,100pts from recitation (70pts from weekly quizzes-these were usually pretty simple-and 30pts from weekly Hw-which was rly helpful in understanding the material). He posts old exams so after reviewing those I was usually confident going into exams. Also offers some EC
angel. HE IS SO RESOURCEFUL. past exams, quiz answer keys, many TAs and office hours, and zoom review sessions. He is a sweet teacher who genuinely loves chemistry. His lectures can be boring but his weekly homework, quizzes, and worksheets will help in addition to his posted lecture notes. He also has a good grading scale and offers so much EC
Dr. Golde was an amazing Chem 2 professor, although his lectures can sometimes drag. He has a lot of extra credit options and reasonable tests that are easy to study for since he posts the previous years tests with answer keys. I would recommend him for anyone taking chem 2 (just remember the class is difficult no matter what professor you take)
Dr. Golde is so sweet and funny in class. His lectures are very detailed and his tests reflect solely what was taught in class. He gives out his previous exams, which is really helpful. I got As on his exams by mainly studying those. His class is concept-heavy, so it is important to pay attention in class and understand them well!
Dr. Golde is a sweet and kind man. His lectures are thorough and the material he gives on Canvas - practice exams, quiz keys, and even Achieve homework is extremely helpful for studying. You will find that exams are very fair and based on concepts covered in class. Read carefully and always check answers because that's where most people mess up.
I liked Golde, I think he's a really good person and really cares about his students. I struggled with his tests as they were 16 multiple choice which was a really hard way to show your understanding for the whole 3-4 units learned. The tests are basically your grade as they were weighted so heavily. Wouldn't take him again.
This guy is so sweet and precious. Exams are pretty difficult and very conceptual based and can include some pretty difficult details, but he's so helpful and wants the best for students. He gives old exams, and our homework is also really helpful to study. Chem is a tough subject no matter who you take, but he's so sweet and amazing
I loved this adorable old man, but he is coming to the end of his teaching career. Difficulty of the three exams increased as semester went on but they were manageable, but very detail-heavy. He posted a ton of resources to use for studying which helped a lot. Uses many examples in lecture that help to understand and almost definitely are on tests.
Golde is just a sweet old man that wants to see you succeed and pass. However, i found is lectures very hard to follow/ grasp the overall point. But, Chem 2 material is just hard in general. His conceptual question were impossible in my opinion. You are expected to memorize like 1000 M topics for the exams and its just not possible.
The class was mostly conceptual and you have to memorize a lot of specific trends and facts that were seemingly unrelated. However, Dr. Golde knows the material very well and teaches it very well. Lots of homework, but also lots of extra credit. Exams were hard but similar to previous exams which he posts. Not for those looking for an easy A.
I've heard from people that Dr. Golde is an amazing professor and while I think he is good, I think he is a little overhyped. Coming into the class I had huge expectations but I felt like he was an okay lecturer who was nice and threw in funny jokes here and there. His tests are very conceptual and detail orientated but I learned a lot.
Dr. Golde was a decent professor. Exams were structured similar to old exams but that was it. Kinda overhyped and lectures were difficult to follow. He is a nice person, has some in class demos and gives like 10 points of extra credit. Exams had many questions which gave three statements and asked which one was correct but with all possibilities.
Dr Golde seems like a sweet old guy but the majority of your grade will be from the exams and they are SO confusing and so hard. think "options A-H with stuff like 'J) C and E'" kind of exams. there were also impossibly difficult conceptual questions. personally, I think there's easier profs out there for chem 2.
I will never forgive Dr. Golde for putting on his exam H3O without the plus and marking me wrong. I really thought it was just a typo that he didn't include it. This is an example of how he can be really tricky in his grading and tests. I do think he's an excellent lecturer, but his exams test reading comprehension rather than chem.
Professor Golde is a sweet, knowledgeable lecturer, but his exams can be tricky and heavily conceptual. Unstuckstudy AI was a huge help for efficient study prep.
Cool dude, but he can't teach. I learned almost nothing in class and had to teach myself the material.
I loved him as a person, but it is very hard to do well in this class. Practice exams do not reflect actual exams whatsoever, and are very unpredictable. It seems no matter how much you would study, exams did not reflect material. Also, lecture and exams did not seem to match entirely. If you are more concerned about grades, I do not recommend.
Honestly one of the best General Chemistry professors. I am not at all saying this is an easy A, but he gives you plenty of resources to prepare yourself and practice. The homework, online problem sets, and practice exams really helped me learn all the material. He also does demos in class to show chemical properties which is fun. Highly recommend!
Lots of material!!! But he does a good job of putting everything on canvas and putting everything together for you to study for exams. Only 2 exams and a final, no drop, so doing good on them is crucial. Lots of extra credit. Lectures not mandatory but definitely helps to go. Very nice profesor!
4 for difficulty because he definitely makes chem 2 harder than it needs to be. His test questions are very long and have many answer choices and combinations of answer choices, same with his homework. If there is one way to describe Golde it is very wordy. This being said he gives good resources to help study and is very available.
Lectures can be tedious but he makes it very clear what material you need to know for exams and what you do not need to know. Exam grades are bad mainly because of the test's convoluted format: each multiple choice question is worth 6 points (with less than 20 per exam) with 5-7 answer choices. Funny guy, gives a lot of extra credit opportunities
Golde is a very nice old man, but his teaching style is for some and def not for all. I went from an A in Chem 110 (with Dr. Michael) to a C in Chem 120 with Golde. It felt very impossible to do well even when I studied incredibly hard. Overall he maybe good for some but was horrible for me and some friends of mine. Wouldn't recommend.
Lecture was easy to follow but the tests are heavily conceptual and you cant rely on chem math to get you through it. He really does want his students to succeed and provides so many resources
Dr. Golde is an amazing and hilarious professor. The class was pretty simple, two midterms and a final (no drops), but there were lots of opportunities to gain extra credit. Exams were pretty easy, if you studied and did the homework. Lectures were a bit boring though.
Dr. Golde is probably the best choice for Chem 2. His lectures are somewhat boring but give all the necessary information and are clear about what topics need to be memorized for exams. Tons of study guides, past exams, practice questions, tutorials, and office hours are offered. Overall a good chemistry foundation and doable exams.
Golde is an amazing lecturer and very informative. Tests (~15 Qs) and quizzes can be very hard so you will have to study a lot. He tries to give extra credit on tests whenever he can so SHOW WORK WHEREVER YOU CAN! I really loved his classes and you learn a lot from him. He offers a good amount of EC and so many resources to help you prepare.
Super cool dude! Always shows experiments in class LOVE HIS SILLY DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS; if you get the opportunity, take him for chem 2!! Tests were straightforward if you study and he is a sweet old man who loves what he does; he doesn't like answering questions but that's what TAs are for!! TAKE HIM!!
golde is the sweetest old man i love him so much
Between homework, lectures, etc, Dr. Golde gives you all the resources you need to succeed. He also gives lots of extra credit. However, the format of his exams suck, because every MCQ is worth ~6 points and there are lots of “select all that apply” questions (usually no partial credit). He's very sweet, but there are professors with easier exams.
Dr. Golde is such a sweet and adorable man. His exams are challenging and worth a large portion of your grade. Even so, he gives you a ton of resources to study, including all of the lecture notes, homework answers, and past exams. Use your resources and you'll be fine.
Super sweet and accessible outside of class. However, I regret taking his class. I can't even tell you how much I studied for his exams and barely passed the class. This isnt a bare minimum case either. I did the extra credit, I got a tutor, I met with him, I met with TAs. Exams are nonsense. Don't study chemistry, study how he asks exam questions.
Golde was great! He is very conceptual, but if you study a bit for his exams its not hard to do well. He gives a ton of extra credit, and is a really forgiving grader for exams. If you want to do well, he gives several old exams for each exam which I recommend doing. He also gives a list of concepts needed for each exam, so make sure you know these
Professor Golde is super sweet. The content in the course can be overwhelming, as he gives a ton of resources for every topic, but Golde wants you to learn the why behind the chemistry, rather than brute memorization. His exams can be complicated, but the best practice is to do the old exams as well as review the homework and lecture notes.
