Took the Honors Physical Anthropology class, there was one presentation, one nine page essay, and three tests. Overall a pretty enjoyable class, he doesn't have any office hour, and email contact is usually the best. Uses powerpoint lectures.
Very insightful instruction. PhD from UC Davis. Taught in ways that extended interests beyond archaeology
Very interesting professor, he loves what he teaches and it shows! I highly recommend taking his classes.
Prof Grofe is a very intelligent man. I definitely recommend taking this class if you are looking for honors classes. You will learn a lot, but at the same time its not overwhelmingly hard. His quizzes are just vocab and his tests are pretty straight forward. There is one presentation and a research paper but he's an easy grader.
Michael is really cool and a good teacher, and he has lots of really interesting stories to tell related to anthropology. And he doesn't make you do homework aside from one presentation and paper except for some reading, and he emails you a lot.
Very, very easy class, especially for honors. He has really interesting stories to tell, considering he actually worked with Koko. He practically gives you all the answers to the test the class period before, so don't miss it. You don't need to buy the textbook because you never use it. He won't bother getting to know you if you don't participate.
It's more than obvious that this man is passionate about everything he puts his mind to. He has to be the most knowledgeable and unpretentious professor I have met. By fostering an interest for students' comments, he engages everyone's input and welcomes any kind of curiosity. Refreshingly, he acts like a human being, and not a monotonous robot.
Mr. Grofe is one of the best professors i have ever had. It is my easiest and favorite honors class, and I loved it so much I decided to switch my major to anthropology. He makes his class interesting, but he is also understanding if you miss a few classes. Mr. Grofe totally rocks!
Michael is as lively as his depictions of this subject. This is not a class to miss, nor would any class he teaches. His passion for life and all its components shows vividly. He's a real peach.
He likes to teach a lot about his experiences (usually Mezo-America), but the class I took was WORLD prehistory and he just taught about Mayan's. At one point, he actually gave us a quiz on the chapter he was going to be teaching us, and never quizzed us on the material he'd been teaching us for a month. Not very good.
By far the best teacher I have had at SCC. Very passionate about what he teaches and I have never learned more in any class. His personal experience makes the subject relatable and more exciting. Absolutely loved this class and learned a lot.
If you actually pay attention he's not very hard, but he does challenge you! Overall a very passionate professor and makes class fun!
He's a really cool professor, I plan on re-taking this course so I can prove to him that I was just too immature back then. I hope he'll give me a second chance, he teaches so passionately.
Dr. Grofe is one of the most knowledgeable professors at SCC. Great class!
Grofe does a great job of making a difficult topic fun. Overall, he is fairly lenient on deadlines, especially if you work hard. For work at home, there can be extensive amounts of reading (especially if you fall behind) along with other things to do for the class; just stay caught up on the material and pay attention in class and you will be okay.
Grofe is a relaxed and helpful teacher. He can be a bit disorganized in lecture, but he is very passionate about what he does, and it makes the class fun. The class itself I will warn, is a bit rushed due to a lot of content, but with Grofe it is very fun.
The content may be difficult if you fall behind, but he does a great job at making it fun and interesting. He's very very very helpful and really wants you to succeed with an A. He's very lenient and a really good teacher who has a passion about the subject. The students loved him. I'd recommend.
Dr G is an awesome instructor, very dynamic. Makes his class fun and really involves his students. A bit aloof if you run into him outside of the classroom.
Grofe is one of the best professors I have had at SCC. He is energetic and engages the class. I took this class in the summer so we had to use the discussion board. We had three tests two of which were online. His class has made me choose anthro as a minor! I would definitely take him again.
Dr. Grofe is ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS I have ever met. He's so passionate, fun, funny, clear, helpful, energized, and someone who made Linguistics more interesting and fun. Of course, you have to do your job as a student and be prepared as well. His rich academic and personal experience make the class much more interesting and fun! TAKE HIM!!!
Came into this class not really expecting to have any interest in the subject, just wanted to take it for my credits. Prof. Grofe is AMAZING. One of the best teachers I've had so far. He's so passionate about each culture and the way he teaches is so entertaining. Little HW & simple Tests. He's really a great teacher i highly recommend taking him!
Awesome professor! His passion in what he is teaching is obvious and even made me interested in linguistics. Most all of his lectures are interesting and he is pretty funny. As long as you do all of the assignments and study for the tests (make flashcards) you will do well in his class.
The man is a vessel for all the joy and passion of the world to be channeled into students as inspiration and hope. Does really good accents.
This class totally changed how I see the world! He's an overall very kind and interesting person. I DEFINITELY recommend him. Expect some good accents and sound effects.
A fantastic professor who has a gift for teaching. I came to this class with no interest in linguistics but left with a new mind. I'm not exaggerating; I gained a conception of language that changed my life. I have since transferred to a university and he is still my best instructor. Remember to engage your peers - language is a shared experience.
He's a great professor, and i want to take more classes he teaches. He's funny, cracks the whole class up, and is very easy to talk to. He gives options for extra credit on every quiz and drops your lowest quiz score. He's an all around amazing professor. If you show up to class, participate, and pay attention his class is easy.
Amazing lecturer. I would take his class again. Extremely dynamic and passionate about. A very fun class, time goes by without one even realizing. I highly recommend him.
It is obvious that Grofe wants his students to do well and pass. He is extremely well-spoken and educated during his lectures, and he takes the time to ensure that his students understand the material. I have had him as a professor for two years, and I have enjoyed both Physical Anthro and his lab. I highly recommend him, especially for lab! L
Teacher with many experiences to talk about and help with his lectures. For the exams you need to study his study guides. Has a final group project that is simple. 3-4 papers but he gives examples and clear rubrics. Fun class. Test are easy if you study. Various vocab quizzes that are easy with extra credit.
This anecdote sums up Professor Grofe in my experience: I approached him after class and asked for some outside-of-class reading that might introduce me to the history of anthropology as a field. He sent me an annotated bibilography of both historically important texts AND his personal favorites, with DETAILED explanations. Life-changing professor.
Dr. Grofe is awesome. He is very intelligent and his Lectures are amazing. Everything I learned in this class was interesting. I would definitely take him again for the lab. I highly recommend him.
I have always been interested in anthropology but Dr. Grofe made me even more interested. I never got bored because lectures were amazing. I liked everything about this class and enjoyed every minute of it. Dr. is very intelligent, knowledgeable, attractive and has a beautiful smile. Wish you all the best Dr. Grofe.
This class was super interesting. He's very educated on this subject. Easy extra credit points on all quizzes. Lots of terminology on tests. I don't think we ever had homework. He does random sound effects & accents which keeps class interesting. He's a slow grader, but I would definitely take his class again along with the lab.
Love him! Just work hard, participate and do the work and you'll get a good grade. He offers extra credit! He cares about what he is teaching you and it shows! Take him, you will enjoy class
Professor Grofe really opened my eyes to the concept of linguistics and the structure of language. So many subjects that I was never aware of and yet experienced every day were made clear to me. His lectures and his character are amazing and hilarious! Do the work and you'll be just fine, I'll definitely be taking him again next semester! RECOMMEND
Professor Grofe is definitely one of the gems at SCC. Very engaging lectures, knowledgeable (which contributes to his interesting lectures), and if he doesn't have an answer to a question, he will get back to you. Take advantage of extra credits, stay off your phone during class (he will call you out), and use the study guide before exams.
I cannot and do not want to recommend this professor.
This experimental class focused on ancient Mesoamerica. Without a doubt, this was an exhilarating class filled with tons of amazing information. Prof. G's awesome lectures and clear grading criteria made this an easy yet thought-provoking class. If you ever get a chance to take this class with him, DO IT. He will open a new perspective for you!
Prof. Grofe was an amazing instructor. He conveyed the concepts of physical anthropology extremely well and is a professional at what he teaches. His lectures are amazing and he is also hilarious! Gives out tons of extra-credit and makes his assignments enjoyable. He is always ready to help you to succeed in his class and I recommend him very much!
Prof. Grofe's physical anthro lab was an amazing experience because of his guidance and class structure. His lectures were amazing and he is always ready to help. In lab, you work with other students and Prof. G made sure that we were all on track. Gives out tons of extra-credit and his exams are very easy as long as you study. Would recommend him!
I had personal matters going on this semester and Professor Grofe went out of his way to ensure I succeed in his class. His passion for teaching is evident. He cares so much about his students and can honestly say he wants all of us to prosper. I am so grateful to have had him and be a part of his class. I hope to be as great as him one day.
Professor Grofe is very flexible and understanding in his quizzes and exams. He gives partial credit and does not try to fool you like other professors. If you actually study and participate you will excel in the lab. He is funny and attractive so it's not difficult to pay attention. I loved being in his class and would definitely take him again.
I enjoyed his anth 310 so much with Professor Grofe! He's definitely very passionate about anthropology. Definitely assigned readings, but it wasn't hard as well as easy lectures. Come take notes listen and you'll pass! Promise you won't be bored or disappointed.
I've always been a science-phobe and this class definitely made me fall in love with the field which was unexpected. Just do the work like the adult you are! If you pay attention to the lectures the studying won't have to be as heavy for the exams. Don't forget the weekly discussions.
I highly recommend taking a class with this professor! If you take the time to read the book and do the study guides before exams, you should do well in this class. I definitely have a new found appreciation for this subject after taking this course. His humor and passion for anthropology had me looking forward to his class throughout the semester.
Make sure you PAY ATTENTION in class and also attend class! Everything that comes out of his mouth is on the quizzes and exams! Office visits are great as well! amazing professor! Do all your Homework! and make sure when you are taking the quizzes they are written and make sure it's lengthy he loves to read! and you get the full points!!!
I loved this class, and it was so much fun. I highly recommend Professor Grofe. He is an amazing professor. Do the homework, study for exams and quizzes, and take notes, and you will be fine.
Dr. Grofe makes lecture so engaging and interesting. I have always hated science related courses, but now I am considering minoring in Anthropology because of him. It is an easy class, just make sure you are taking notes on everything he says. He practically tells us what is going to be on the quizzes. A LOT EXTRA CREDIT, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT!
Grofe was hands-down the best professor I've ever had. His passion for anth facilitates the learning of his students in itself. He'll start to speak and you'll want to listen. His tests are not ambiguous; it's clear what you should know. He's jolly and hilarious, and seriously brilliant. Has done great work in his field. A legend. A star. My idol.
I've never been so enthralled by lectures. I highly recommend this class for a manageable workload and if you want your mind to be blown! You should study for tests and quizzes (3 tests, a handful of small quizzes with extra credit on each one) but he provides a study guide for EVERYTHING. Dr. Grofe wants to see everyone succeed.
This is one of the best teachers at Sac City. He is so dedicated to what he is teaching and lives through his teaching. If I could take every class of his I would. Hes a little touch but give lots of quizzes , extra credit , is lenient on papers, and gives an entire extra credit quiz. He explains everything very clearly and loves to inspire people
His lectures are all over the place. The papers he assigns have nothing to do with Anth. 1st paper was on a boring video game. Has discussion boards and quizzes every week! Discussions opens on your 1st class of the week and is due that same day. Quizzes are due the next class. Plus he has 5 more quizzes in class. Grades hard on discussions boards.
Dr. Grofe is hands down one of the best professors I've had for Linguistics. I enjoyed taking this class with him, and he makes his lectures so much more interesting and fun to learn. It was after taking this class that I went on to do my minor in Linguistics at UC Davis! And I'll say this again, one of the best professors I've hadfor linguistics!!
Dr. Grofe is outstanding. That's the simple answer. I absolutely adored every minute of his class and I didn't feel overwhelmed at all despite the state of the world around us. He really did so much for us to make the class streamlined and effective, and I really think I learned so much from his class. He is amazing. Please take his class!
He assigned 1 discussion board along with a discussion quiz and 1 lecture quiz every week. There are also 4 projects in a semester, and 3 out of 4 are multiple choice. However, be sure to watch his prerecorded lectures from beginning to end and take notes since it is the easiest way for you to get an A in the class.
Grofe is passionate about his field. His is willing to help and is cool to talk to. He does weekly quizzes on prerecorded lectures. Gives you multiple attempts. A discussion board and four projects throughout the semester & Final. His syllabus is clear and follows it. He offers a lot of extra credit so take it because it will bump up your grade.
I had to take this class for my major. I had no idea what Anth was about but I just thought it was an easy lecture class. Man, was I wrong. If you're interested in Anth then I'm pretty sure you're going to enjoy this class but if you're not then you're going to suffer. Thankfully the prof is super nice and cared for my grade. I went to office hrs
Hes very clear about assignment instructions and deadlines. The lectures are easy to follow and it is always clear what to write for notes/study for exams. Hes also passionate so lectures are pretty interesting :)
Professor Grofe's classes are for people who really want to learn a subject. If you're trying to take a class just to pass and get by, he's a little more on the challenging side, but you will certainly learn more from him than other professors. He is passionate and caring and will always be there for you if you need help!! He's one of my favorites.
I love Mr.G!! Textbook but I didn't use it since his lectures, online reading and videos cover most of it. There's quizzes, discussions every week with 3 big exams. Lots of work but he's super funny, caring, and as someone who is VERY bad with science in math, I learned a lot. He made me love science! If you go through the work, you'll learn it!
Really great professor and anthropologist! Has awesome lectures and the lectures are very easy to process. Theres discussions every week and quizzes but everything is so easy if you just go through the lectures. Super accessible outside of class and if you need any advice he will be there to help.
Professor Grofe has a fantastic range of experience in the anthro field. It was an online course, so lectures were recorded from previous semesters, but I look forward to his lessons in person if I get the chance to take another class from him. Make sure to put in the hours, notes & study guides, & you'll learn a lot, as well as pass.
I absolutely love Professor Grofe! He's so smart, but makes his teaching accesible to all. He's compassionate and is there for me when I'm struggling. He's invested in me and my success. He's very accepting and is easy to confide in. His biological anthroplogy class made more interested in science than I've ever been. I'd 100% take him again!
This class is hard but in a good way. Watch the lectures, do the reading, take notes and you will be absolutely good. There are 3 major "assignments" Grading criteria is clear and he's willing to help with anything you're having trouble with. Super amazing to learn from.
VERY DIFFICULY CLASS!! He is well organized but has a lot of assignments? Every week you will need to complete a discussion/reply post, take a discussion quiz, 2-3 hour lectures, lecture quiz, vocab and study guide. Additionally 4 projects, and 4 exams. On Exams a very tough grader!!! But the lectures are very interesting.
I took this course asynchronously and it was a good amount of work but not too much to handle for the most part. He is a very involved professor that cares about the students education. The majority of the course work is full of weekly quizzes and discussion board with an occational chapter quiz and project. Overall a good course to take.
Be prepared to actually learn something. If you aren't into that then this class isn't for you. Lots of lecture but it's interesting and a discussion board every week. He's caring and friendly and willing to help as long as you are also willing to help yourself. Well worth it if you're looking for an enriching experience.
Intense course with a lot of pressure! Online discussion quiz is 5 minutes for 5 questions and Practice Lecture quiz is 10 minutes for 10 questions which were not good enough time to finish it. Watch out for Dr. Grofe, he will make students take a quiz and test in person so study for those quizzes and tests.
I've already reviewed Dr. G, but I got to take his linguistics class in person and it was an awesome experience. People giving him 1 star and saying his class is too hard need to toughen up. This is college, not high school. Dr. G gives you an oppurtunity to learn meaningful content. He's always there to help, but you've also got to help yourself.
class is interesting, didnt expect it to cover so many various topics. the teacher is cool, he's not afraid to be real. the discussions dont matter that much, focus on the exams and tests. i flunked 2 of the exams and missed most of the discussion dates but i still passed :)
Professor Groffe is smart, funny, and compassionate. He knows his stuff and keeps it interesting. Definitely recommend!!
Mr. Grofe is a good teacher, he's funny and his lectures are interesting but I did really struggle in the class. Its easy to get lost track of assignments and keeping up is difficult. If you're good at managing your time and your school work then you will do well in this class.
There's a lot of work and watching the lectures is a must. That said, there are multiple extra credit opportunities, & he really goes out of his way to make himself available for questions. He's extremely knowledgeable, very engaging, and gives excellent feedback. The lectures are pretty entertaining too. I'd absolutely take another of his classes.
Dr. G is incredibly knowledgeable about all things anthropology and his lectures are always engaging. Very relatable, while also remaining professional. Really wants the best for all of his students, offering lots of office hours and promptly replying to messages, even after hours. Great detailed feedback on all work, exams are very doable. 1000/10
An amazing professor who is good at teaching all areas of Anthropology. Graded mostly by quizzes and tests with a one or two big projects but as long as you attend and pay attention to lectures you'll be fine. A very fun teacher who is very accessible to students and is always willing to help if you ask for it.
Absolutely loved this class. Professor Grofe's teaching style is exciting and engaging, you feel like you're actually learning things every time you have his class. If you attend the lectures and pay attention, you'll do great. I would recommend making a note bud for when you're not able to attend a lecture.
professor grofe is a very knowledgeable and passionate teacher. I just found myself getting confused a lot of the time. it's a fast paced lecture, we were behind often so the pace was even faster and increased my confusion and ability to prepare for the tests. the tests are a very heavy chunk of our grade. just wish it was a little more thorough.
Lectures are hilarious, but somehow, they are fast-paced and behind schedule. To pass, you must attend lectures AND participate on Canvas. Project heavy towards the end of the semester but lots of extra credit opportunities. Study guides for exams are rlly vague and the quiz/exam questions are rlly specific. Always available to provide support.
Took his bio anth course last sem. Y'all please take a class from Prof. Grofe, I legitimately think that every person would have a better off life after hearing from him.
Lectures are very interactive. Assignments include weekly discussion board, couple projects and quizzes (written), an 3 non-cumulative exams(do the optional practice lecture quizzes). The professor gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Only downside was that the class was behind but still takes his time answering unimportant questions.
Great professor. Truly passionate about the material and cares about students
You just have to show up to class and keep up with the course load and you'll do great.
A brilliant teacher. He makes the subject very easy to understand and learn, and the work in his course isn't too difficult. I took him in person, so i'm not sure how it is online, but as long as you show up you're all set. textbook isn't mandatory. make sure you definitely ask classmates for notes if you miss a day. would definitely recommend him.
Dr. Grofe truly has a gift for teaching! This was hands-down one of the best classes & learning experiences I've had in junior college. This class can be very tough and requires a shift toward the lens through which you initially viewed “language.” 4 projects, 5 quizzes, 3 exams, and offers many opportunities for extra credit! Phenomenal professor.
This guy requires so much for an online class in terms of attendance. You have to meet with him on zoom and the # of times you log into canvas is counted. As someone who takes online classes and manages working this was an annoying inhibitor to my grade. Also many tests and quizzes you could only do on one specific day, awful for working students.
This class was great! The professor makes everything easy to remember, he utilizes lots of humor in his lectures, and also offers occasional extra credit. Unless you hate weekly discussion boards, I would highly recommend this class.
Dr. Grofe is a great guy, and he cares about his students! He would often get off topic, which caused us to fall behind on the material. Not a big deal because his lectures can be found online if we can't get through them. He's hilarious and is open to helping you if you need help understanding the material. Get ready to study and work hard!
Pretty good and easy professor and class. I don't really have a lot to say because he was very average (but in a good way).
Dr.Grofe is a wonderful teacher and lecturer you can tell he is passionate about what he does, always engaging. Be sure to take notes thats all you have to do, give quizzes full of extra credit - always got a hundred. I ended the class with a 103 percent. I will be taking his other classes too! Amazing professor, honestly
A knowledgeable and passionate professor who genuinely wants his students to succeed. His lectures are engaging, fun, and help make the material easier to understand. Be aware that grading relies heavily on closed-book exams and quizzes, which may be challenging for some students. But he is helpful, and passing the class is definitely possible.
Genuinely one of the best teachers I have ever had. Lectures will never make you bored and he offers a ton of extra credit to the point where a B is basically the lowest grade you should get if you study and do the assignments. 10/10 recommend.
