Anal retentive. Gives exam questions before exam. Take copious notes. Be prepared to participate in class.
Do all the readings and take really good notes. Participation is a major thing for him. Never walk in late or fall asleep in class or he'll make a big deal out of it. But overall a great teacher!
Amazing teacher. The class consists of very passionate and enlightening discussions. READ THE TEXT and expect to participate in class... and don't fall asleep!
He's too strict. Yea, he gives out the midterm early, but it's really hard. You have to read ALOT, and he WILL call on you in class, so be prepared.
very boring. no need to take notes or pay attention really. He does give a participation grade, so you have to talk every during the discussion.
get out while you still can, he grades hard, and very obnoxious
Dr. Gross makes history interesting and exciting. Attendance is necessary, and you take lots of notes- but he gives you the essay questions before the exams. Good professor- I would take him again.
He gives ya the test questions a week in advance which is pretty nice, but they are indepth questions. He class is boring as all hell but you do learn alot about history. Im not a big history fan but i didnt mind his class
nice guy. cares about his students. need to do work though. reading intensive
Dr. Gross is a great teacher. His class is challenging, but not hard, especially if you've taken history classes before. He's awesome - take his class!
A nice and very interesting professor. He always has some interesting stories to tell. I enjoyed every minute of his class.
Dr. Gross teaches as though his job was on the line and someone in the department was in the back of the classroom grading and marking his every move. Very slow-moving class and unanswered questions. Almost too polite, grades in class are average.
If you participate you will pass with a good grade. Dr. Gross keeps the class interesting but doesn't put up with laziness and don't dare be tardy. Exams are essay but you get the questions plenty ahead of time.
good teacher, kinda nerdy though. he gives out test quests ahead of time, so if you take good notes you'll be fine. interesting material, class can kind of drag but i do recommend it!
THE WORSE TEACHER EVER!!! U HAVE TO TALK OUTLOUD IT JUST SUCKS AND SOOO MUCH READIN DONT EVER TAKE THIS CLASSSSSSSSSS
He reads his notes off like it's a play and is very boring. He used g.d. one time and it made me dislike him a lot. He gives 2 exams; both essay, but he gives the exact questions a week ahead of time. The class is interesting if you're into that sort of thing. Don't do it to yourself.
Unless you feel like re-taking this class, run. Not only is he boring, but he doesn't care at all about the people in his class. He gets his words all mixed up and you spend more time erasing and rewriting than anything else... So seriously, RUN!
class wasn't that hard being he gives out essay questions ahead of time, but going to class is absolutely misery. you can only miss 3 days. you must participate in class--he'll call on u. he requires a lot of reading. most boring class i've ever had to sit through. don't take it
Dr Gross has a great love for history and inspires students to want to learn. I loved his class
You can tell he loves teaching history. Classes are pretty boring, but some lectures manage to be interesting. He does give out the EXACT test at least a week in advance. Take good notes and prepare your essays before the exam, and you'll do well!!
AHHHHHH. This was the most boring class EVER! The tests are essays which he hands out ahead of time, but going to class is misery. You have to talk outloud, and he requires so much reading it's ridiculous. Very annoying.
GIVES STUDY GUIDES FOR TESTS. Awkward personality but very kind person.
What a great professor, really loves the subject. Attempts to help you if he can. Class discusions important(affects your grade). 3 books for this class: a text, a document text, and Maus(this is a great comic!). Essay test and one paper.
An excentric man who loves history and is well versed in German. What more could you want? Well, he does give a very complete study guide for all of his tests, that's a plus.
Great teacher. It's like all other History classes being all lecture with a couple of exams and a map quiz. There's a project but I thought it was interesting. Just put forth an effort and do the work and you'll make the grade. He expects you to have your work on time and be to class on time. The History dept. should lighten up on attendance policy.
He definatly is passionate about the class. You will read and discuss a handful of short primary documents consisting of 5-10 pages of reading a week, plus book reading. Great class, 2 tests, participation/attendence grade, and a paper. Make sure to use and state how you use the documents in your essays for the tests though. Do this and your set
He deff seems really hard in the begining..a lot of people drop but i'm glad i didn't...tells u exactly what is going to be on test..Crazy weird guy but its worth it...u get tons of reading but notes cover everything so u don't even have to read...i recomend u take the class!
He seems hard in the beginning but he warms up. Enjoys teaching and makes it not so bad to go to class (attendence is strict), but overall I would take him again. He also gives you essay tests ahead of time.
Dr. Gross counts attendence, Gives 2 tests with 3 essays on each, one 6-page book review, and is a good lecturer.... Grades kinda hard but def take him if your a history major... easier than Dr. Ross but harder than Dr. Jenks....
Really mean and rude. Ughh.. cant wait for his class to be OVER. Do not take unless you are smarter then him.. and well good luck with that!
Excellent professor! Routine makes class easy. Lectures are creative/well versed. Brace yourself for moments where he stands on desks to give a Beer Hall Putsch. Jots down key terms before lessons to make note taking a breeze. Very personal, esp if you know your history and finish your readings. Primary doc readings and class discussions help alot!

He seems hard in the beginning. I'm glad I stayed. Alot of reading, but it's worth it. Loves class discussions, takes attendance, and gives out essay tests beforehand. He makes it where you want to learn. He really loves history!
This is my favorite professor at ECU.. best class- seems like alot of reading but worth taking. best history professor- go to class, take notes= VERY EASY. love him
He's too cool for school! He makes me want to live, sleep, and eat German History. His lectures amazing, his prose fluid, his knowledge infinite. What a babe.
Way too much reading. Seriously close to a hundred pages some weeks!I would say just read the sources,b/c they are the basis for the exams. We did read a comic/novel about the Holocaust, which was cool.He does call ppl out from time to time, and does not value students' opinions, though he asks for them.He isn't as harsh as he puts off to be, though.
Dr. Gross is passionate about his subject and wants students to be passionate as well. The first day scares everyone but im glad i stayed. do you work, read, try to not miss very many days and youll be fine! makes class interesting
Very helpful, if you want the help. READ the required reading. take notes on it and refer back to it when he calls on you, he will. GO TO CLASS! Great teacher, passionate..never boring makes you think, and funny guy.
This class is AWFUL. READ THE BOOK. He will call you out & he will embarrass you. He doesn't care what you have to say & thinks history is amazing. I dread this class everyday. Don't take his class!
Nice guy. Very passionate about his class and gets into his lectures. But if you are shy don't take this class because he will call you out and make you feel stupid if you don't know the answer. MUST READ!!!
Other professors are much easier. You will learn a lot, however it is very hard to get a decent grade in the class. Essay tests and lots of reading.
Good professor if you pay attention and take good notes. All of his tests are essays (from the notes), but he gives them to you ahead of time. So if you decide what you are going to say ahead of time, you will make a good grade. He wears the same outfit every day, literally and his hair is always a mess. But hes a great teacher!!
He will scare you at first, but I definitely recommend staying. He is wild, entertaining, and so much fun. His lectures will teach you more than you can imagine. Exams are essays, which he gives to you before hand. Fair grading. Attendance mandatory. Talk in classes and READ! Participation is huge.
I dread going to this class. Professor is very theartical but tries to cover more than he can, yet he tests you on things not covered in class. Read his freaking books(especially the one HE wrote) because theyre on the exam but you never talk about them in class. Don't take this guy unless you absolutely have to.
If you have not put on your big kid pants yet DO NOT TAKE HIM. He will try to scare you but he is an amazing teacher and you will learn more in his class than you can imagine. do the reading and do the work he gives you if you want to party and expect an "A" this professor will not be fun but if you want to work he is the best decision you can make
An interesting, articulate, and intellectual man. Has no time for laziness or those who are not motivated to do well. He expects much, but offers excellent feedback on writing assignments. Mercilessly tore apart my weaknesses in historical thinking but I was all the better for it. I like the guy, a great professor, but DO NOT screw around!
Definitely one of the best history professors ECU offers. Could probably teach English courses and do so better than many ECU professors. Killed my papers with corrections and pointers but is a surprisingly lenient grader if he can tell you put forth the effort. Extremely knowledgeable and helpful, gives you 3? days to miss before taking credit off
Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.
He is very smart and it is clear he knows what he is talking about. There are only 5 grades in the entire class but I feel like he prepares you well for all of them! He gives you the midterm and exam in advance to study with (SUPER HELPFUL). He is, however, very rude and will call you out and humiliate you. It is A LOT of reading!
Dr. Gross is a raging progressive socialist and is not afraid to admit it. That being said, if you can tune out the partisan BS that he rants about occasionally, he is a very good teacher. He gives you everything you need to do well on the exams, just make sure you are prepared for class discussions or you will be made fun of.
There aren't many assignments for this class, which means you must do well on all of them. However, if you study and follow instructions this isn't hard to do. If you do not do the reading you will be picked on. If you are the type of person who sits in the back of class or shows up late do not take this section because you will be called out.
If you do not come to class prepared or late you will be picked on. Sit front and center in class, if you don't wanna sit there don't take this section. Assignments are easy if you prepare and follow instructions. If you can get past the boring, sometimes insulting, classes you will make a good grade.
He does a good job teaching but you better be prepared. If you are shy or don't like class discussion, he tells you on the first day find another professor. You learn a lot in his class which was great and I wanted to continue learning history.
Great teacher. He really knows his history. If you pay attention in this class, you will come out with a lot of useful knowledge. Do the readings and you will be fine. He gives you the topics for the exams ahead of time and makes sure you are well-prepared. However, if you don't like to participate, don't take this class.
One of my favorite professors. He knows what he is talking about and is really passionate. He challenges you to think, and I have learned a lot because of it. Be prepared to read a lot, but if you do, you will be a part of some amazing discussions. I promise if you do the hw and participate, you will be rewarded by the end of the class. :)
Prof Gross is awesome. He makes the class fun, and all you really need to do to pass is come to class and participate in the lectures. While it is good to do the reading before class, as long as you pay attention and take notes you will be able to slide in there. He isn't a tough or easy grader, and he never assigns homework. I would recommend!
Prof Gross has so far been my favorite professor at ECU. History is so boring but he is so passionate about it and makes the class get engaged in the material. He is an honest grader and if you pay attention to his lectures and take notes you will pass all the tests easy. I would take him again and his class was fun! Lectures can be long some days
Very knowledgeable and passionate about history. However, he brings politics into his lectures and things can get heated sometimes. Very tough grader and doesn't really make directions for tests very clear. Very few grades so not many assignments to catch up if you don't do well on the first one.
I really enjoyed Professor Gross overall. He loves the subject and shows it everyday in class. His lectures are interesting and you have to participate for your grade, which I liked. His tests, however, are extremely annoying and difficult. No tests questions, only essays. Very few grades given and you have to go to class or you'll fail.
His lectures are very entertaining. You must participate ALOT. The lectures aren't powerpoint based, they are very much group discussion based but he will make sure you know what he wants you to know. The tests are only essays, but you get advanced copies of them. Recommend using a laptop for notes because he does bounce around a lot.
Really cool class. Never really enjoyed history but he made it really interesting. He makes it as though you can make connections between history from centuries ago to today. Reading before class makes it so you can participate in class discussion (a lot of that) but if don't just take really good notes.
Professor Gross is such a weird guy, but he really knows what he is talking about and is super passionate about History. This class has SO much reading. Be prepared to read and take notes on about 40 textbook pages a week in order to participate in class (which makes up most of your grade). Its tough but manageable if you work hard.
Class will really scare you in the start, many dropped and I thought about it. He grows on you over the semester as you start to see the man is a genius. He knows a lot about his subject and his lectures actually teach you new concepts that blow your mind but actually make sense. Only gives 4 assignments but gives you advance copies weeks before.
Dr. Gross is super intimidating at first. You have to be ready to work and read and participate in the class. That being said the class is super interesting, and you learn so much more than what another professor might teach. He is a little bit strange, but does want you to succeeded. You have to participate, and to do that you must READ. Take him.
HE IS THE TOUGHEST GRADER!!! Your final grade only has 4 assignments that go into it so if you fail one, its really hard to recover. He definitely doesn't make it easy to pass this class. I tried to actively participate each day and did all of the reading and still got hit with over-critical grading. This class takes too much effort.
Dr. Gross has by far been one of my favorite instructors at ECU. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. if you pay attention and apply yourself you will learn a lot. Even though Dr. Gross is very personable, this does not mean he will give you a good grade. you really have to earn it. overall Dr. G is an amazing instructor!
This man was by far my favorite professor my first semester of college. He makes you view history in a way that you would never expect and always ends his lectures by tying everything he has talked about in class that day together and blowing your mind in the process. All your grades will be essays but he gives you the questions before the test.
This class was great. He lectures were very engaging and heavily dependent upon the readings from both the textbook and source book. Only a few grades go into your overall grade so you have to be careful and smart. Attendance matters. As long as you do the readings and participate you'll do fine.
He does not tell you what he wants for any essay test, he will give you a "prompt" ahead of time, he will count off for anything you do not mention (he does not tell you anything about what he wants mentioned) and is the toughest grader I have ever had. He enjoys taking people down a peg. I would not take him again if he were the last teacher.
He WILL intimidate you the first class. You have to read before class, take notes and be able to contribute to discussion. I've never been big on history, but his lectures are VERY interesting. He really knows his stuff. Beware of the essays, there's only four and yes, he does grade tough. If you want an easy A, this may not be the class for you.
The professor is very smart although he lacks communication skills. He will drive you up a wall because his class is a "discussion based class". Discussion based classes are not that hard but if you get the answer right he will reword it that way your wrong in his eyes and will get points deducted for "word choice".SO ANNOYING !
Dr. Gross means well. He tells you upfront what the class expectations are and does not hide about its difficulty; however, you do not get enough from the class for it to be worth your trouble. The "discussions" offer no real insight as the students opinions are smashed if not 100% in line with his thinking. Hard to get an A, not worth the trouble.
He warns you about how nitpicky he is about everything & discussions are interesting. HOWEVER, this guy is so hard to please. I was there and spoke every day, worked hard to do well on the midterm, final, and essay and ended up with a C. He didn't even break down the individual grades in Blackboard so you can see why. He's also rude. Don't bother.
Ok so this class is weird because he like only gives out Bs and Cs, its super hard to get and A or anything below a C, also the class is 90% class discussion which got old quickly, but I got a B in the course which I was alright with
Gross warns how hard his class is at the beginning of the course and how you should drop if you are lazy but I needed this class and to be honest his class isn't that THAT hard. I hardly did the readings but showed up to class everyday and you won't get much out of his lectures, they are repetitive. He also has a tendency to ignore other opinions.
My initial thought when I started his class was that he's extremely weird but over the course of the semester he really grows on you. He's very passionate about history and gives a lot of good information. You must attend class and take notes! He will deduct for any points you do not mention fromhis lectures on the exams which are in essay form.
Read and participate and you will pass with a c. You really have to spend some time on each assignment (study for exams and dont write the paper in one night) to get an A.
Love to hear him lecture about topics he is passionate about. My class was very small, and we became close as we participated in class discussion. The man loves a class discussion and WANTS to hear what you THINK. Great class if you really want to learn. Also an OK class if you don't want to work too hard. Exams are hard tho.
Michael Gross is an absolute gem of a professor. Every single class will keep you highly entertained with his intensely detailed lectures. Occasionally goes on left-leaning political rants. Your grades are based on a map quiz, a midterm, a book review and the final. He has become one of my favorite professors and I hope to be able to take him again
Mr. Gross is mediocre at best. You are graded based on only 4 assignments, which are a map quiz, an essay, and two exams (both are essay formats). He is a tough grader. As a person, he is extremely rude and arrogant to his students, even if you just want his help. His lectures aren't helpful at all. You have to read his book. I would not recommend.
Guy cost me scholarship. Asked him multiple times how to improve my essays and was told nothing.
Dr. Gross does not teach, he simply asks questions until someone eventually gets it right, or assigns us to read the textbook. He doesn't reply to emails or phone calls, so getting ahold of him is nearly impossible.
Easily the worst professor Ive had here. He is impossible to reach and does not lecture at all. Your grade is literally only based on 4 things. He is often times rude and incredibly condescending. Do not take!!!
do not recommend taking a class with this professor. He grades based on how much you participate in class and gets very frustrated with his students when they do not know how to respond to his questions. He calls students out and is very disrespectful towards opinions. He makes jokes that are very uncomfortable, beware he will not respond to email
He is mean to his students, he goes on tangent and rants on things not related to the course subject. I received an A, but I would never take this man again.
He just rambles the whole class and literally teaches nothing. There was like 3 grades the whole class and they got put in the final day so I had no clue if I passed till then. I somehow got a B but I didnt learn a single thing
Professor Gross routinely yelled at and ridiculed students, talked in circles, and asked trick questions. Nothing is posted to Canvas so you must come to class. Grading is focused on speaking/writing well. Class time was enjoyable only because Professor Gross' behavior was comical at times and my classmates were interesting to talk with.
Do not take this class with Michael Gross unless you want to be tortured every tues/thurs. He will degrade you for not knowing the answer to his question. Avoid at all costs
Dr. Gross is awful! He ridicules you if you don't know an answer to a question, if you have a differing opinion, or if you just want help. He is a tough grader! You only do 4 assignments in his class so there is no room for error. He doesn't answer emails and you have to read a lot. He is very weird and gives me the creeps. Stay away from him!!!
Avoid at all costs. Disrespectful, rude, degrading, creepy (especially towards the limited number of girls in a history course). Show up and take notes, and study or you will not pass. Your grades are based on a map quiz, midterm, book review and final. He likes to berate students for not knowing, not understanding, and having a different opinion.
Professor Gross definitely talks in circles and goes way way off track but it is always so interesting to hear how his brain thinks, 100% never a boring class. Only grades you get all class is three assignments which personally I enjoy but he didn't grade till the very end of the semester. Super understanding, if you talk to him IN PERSON.
Dr. Gross is an exemplary example of what it means to be a professor. He truly cares for his students and is more than willing to help you with any concerns you bring to his attention. During my time in his course, I learned some important life lessons that will stick with me throughout the rest of my life. Everyone should take a course with him.
He made me laugh, but unfortunately not on purpose. We wrote one paper the whole semester. He did not put a single grade into canvas. Does not know how technology works.
This class was a waste of my time. All he ever did was ramble and not lecture about the course material. He is comical at times due to how quirky he can be, but that is the only positive I can say about him. I dreaded coming to this class since he yelled at his students so much and made us feel uncomfortable at times. Such a rude man. Do not take!!
Prof Gross is a savant as he is a UChicago, Columbia, and Brown graduate. He is very comical if you are friendly with him. He does not use canvas and does not enter in any grades but it is extremely simple to calculate your grade because there are only 3 grades the entire semester. He gives you the all the exams before you take them.
Very animated teaching style but politicized everything. Also only had 3 assignments the whole semester but never posted grades to canvas and never answers emails. Stay away
DO NOT take a class with him. He is a horrible professor and person. He never put in grades and did not set up the canvas page until half-way through the semester. He talked down to many students and puts you on the spot. This class is supposed to be about world history and he only focused on a STRICTLY white European view.
Do not take this class unless you want to immediately be put on the spot. He talked down on many students and if you are someone who is shy/introverted you will fear going to this class. It was hard to learn anything he was saying because he got off topic so much
Truly passionate about teaching. He wants all of his students to thrive and succeed. Only 1 map quiz, a midterm exam, final exam and he gives you exactly what is going to be asked on the exams weeks before, in order for you to prepare. He is amazing.
Professor Gross has a unique teaching style - he's quirky and engaging, but can also be blunt and critical. The class focuses on speaking and writing skills, with just a few graded assignments. While the lectures can meander, using tools like unstuck ai helped me stay on track. Overall, an interesting but challenging course.
He treats himself like a performer, and the classroom is his stage. Obviously very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject matter, but sometimes he just becomes too much. Only a quiz, short essay, and midterm and final, which he gives out ahead of time. He only gives back letter grades, and doesn't put any grades in canvas.
Dr. Gross is an extremely entertaining professor, akin to a jester. He makes an idiot of himself doing charades and constantly yelling. He is extremely scatterbrained and unprofessional, there are coffee and liquor stains over everything he touches. Unreachable outside of class. Actual class content was easy, few grades, he give ample prep time.
Dr. Gross is distracted and absent-minded. We were weeks behind on content at the time of the final exam. Very unprofessional and rude behavior. The most neurotic professor I've ever had. Never knew whether to laugh at him or be concerned. Very few grades, he gives you ample prep time however, like in all his classes. Don't take unless you have to.
Teacher is very unprofessional and problematic even when online
I took a couple classes with him now and let's just say… he's a very interesting character. Talks politics a lot, goes on rants, and just calls on people. But he is also caring, he took us out for breakfast and offered to pay for some of us. If you take HIST4000 with him, you won't do anything in that class.
Professor Gross is extremely hard to contact and never responds to any emails. It is currently finals week without a single grade put into Canvas to be calculated. He grades all assignments, hands them back, but makes you responsible for keeping track of all grades and all days absent. I would avoid taking this class, easily feel singled out.
Overall, is a genuinely bad teacher. He will go on loud rants about niche parts of course material for entire class sessions, is rude and condescending when students ask questions, refused to help students prepare for assignments, criticizes and mocks people of religious faith, and does not even go over any assigned readings in class sessions.
The class is very lecture heavy and be prepared to take notes. Some of his content is a little confusing so tutoring may be needed. His course is very challenging, and he is very blunt with his words, so if sensitivity levels are higher don't take the course.
Bro hes awful, his lectures are so boring and very discussion heavy. However he just contradicts himself and starts debates that only he's allowed to win and when you ask him a question he makes you feel like an idiot. Don't be fooled by the good reviews bro trust me
This professor is downright terrible. He is loud, gets offtrack about things that do not even correlate to the content he is teaching and he recently walked out of our class when we still had 45 minutes left because one student was on the phone. He does not grade anything and makes us keep track. I have no idea what my grade is. Terrible professor.
