He's so sweet and easygoing. I really enjoyed his class! He's not an uptight jerk like most of these teachers I have taken.
was really helpful and understanding
Great teacher! He truly takes time to help you and he'll look over all your papers before their due and give you feedback. Fun class. Barely any reading.
His online class was smooth. He seems to be an easy grader. Recommended!
His class was a waste of time. It was useless to wake up in the morning to attend his classes because you can't even hear him, or understand his mumbling.
take him, his is a great person and very easy, not like the majority of the professors at SMC. He's sweet and understanding. I can't wait to take his English 2 class next semester!
not too strict about deadlines. a lot of group work, on-line work as well, two or three essays but the first two are in groups. the final is a paper, which isn't too bad. overall an easy class. he's funny and easy going, so no major problems.
Mr.Gustin is great! He assigns a lot of group work and homework is done online.. you post your answers and comment on eachothers' work.No tests! Just three or four essays/research paper.
This is the most understanding teacher ever. You can actually talk to him like a normal human being! he is chill and laid back. Sooooooo nice. Be prepared for online work. Loved this class!
Such a nice man! He is kind & understanding. This class is so chill. Expect online work such as discussion threads which r easy. He asks ~3 papers to be written but he grades pretty easy. Laid back & not a harsh grader at all. Everyone will surely get A.
great teacher!! definately take him!!
Offers a lot of help. The discusstion threads and assignments are pretty easy, but you have to put in the time.
One of the nicest Professors. I learned so much from his classes!
Took this class online, and it's a lot of work. His grading system is, how can one put this...unbelievably unfair. Try to talk to him about it and he gets hostile and refusts to help. Vague and snotty sometimes, even over the internet. Take this class with someone else.
he is very nice. he is an average grader but talking and sitting down with him will get you far. he really does take the time to go over your mistakes. he is a genious in getting the entire class involved. one of the most interactive classes i've ever taken
I took his class online. He is very strict about turning in assignment on time. one time, i submitted the assignment half hour late, he gave me an zero. Beware of plagiarize, he scans very essay very careully
A lot of work!!! Strict deadlines, tough grader, group projects were difficult. Unless you have the time to dedicate, take another class. Had him for Eng 1, this class was great and he was very helpful, got an A. In class...yes, on-line...no.
(online)He's good so far.Good on the grading. Seem's like a really nice guy.Only thing is that there is a LOT of work.No joke(8week semester)you're week could look like: 1-2 essays, plus detailed comments on a few short stories, and possibly an exam if scheduled for that week.do take if u got time.
Great teacher! Interesting readings and not an anal or difficult teacher. Take him!
weights tests and papers the same as discussion! a lot of work. not an easy grade. not willing to provide any sort of extra credit, will not take late work for ANY reason.
i took his class online. He sucks..he needs to be fired...whoever gave this guy a job needs to fire him ASAP..only class at smc that i hated...
I'm currently enrolled in his online class. Really difficult. The material he has selected for us to read so far hasn't been terribly impressive. The questions he asks regarding the material, even less so. He is an extremely difficult grader. He is friendly but doesn't seem to participate much, if at all in the discussion threads.
I am currently enrolled in his online class and I love it! Very hard, but am learning a lot. He is extremely nice when you communicate with him and if you show him that you can do good work, he is more likely to be lenient with you. Funny and fair, I am SO SO glad I took his class!
This is NOT an interesting class. He grades very hard on essay not on content or style, but on tiny little things. But I end up with an A in the class anyway. The discussion is not helpful, but a great boost on the grade. Exams are not helpful either cos all people can just take the exam with the text book next to you. So it is time wasting easy A
The teacher was nice enough, a "lot" of work. No extra credit. Did not care for the way the test was administered. Not the correct format for a on-line class. Better if teacher narrowed the focus of what was going to be on the test, and gave study guidelines. A hard grader, but does seem to give you the benefit if you are dedicated.
I really loved this professor. He is one that I will remember forever. In my top 3 of best professors, but i know some people who didnt like him.
I am a student who does not enjoy reading these boring short stories that were assigned as well as writing those dumb papers. But, I put in the minimum amount of time and still got a B. It's alot of work!
He was a pretty hard grader but he makes clear what he wants done. The tests are pretty easy I was a little bummed out that I got a B because I got A's on all but one essay but didn't do all the discussions. Class is only 8 weeks good way to get this transfer requirement out of the way.
I (heart) Mr. Gustin. Excellent, clear, helpful, all you could ask for. Oh, and I really like that he doesn't take any crap. You don't do the work, you get marked down. No excuses. So if you're a slacker, go elsewhere.
VERY unprofessional; not open to opinions or individual intrepretation (hello, English LIT???); has unclear instructions and grading is inconsistent. He has "pets" that are not necessarily the best students (prejudiced/biased). The only thing I learned from the class is that he's unstable and a detriment to the English dept. Take a diff instructor!
Disregard last bitter rater. Probably tried to skate through. THIS IS AN ONLINE CLASS. It is up to YOU to get the threads and papers done on time. You DO have to put in the time and energy to get a good grade. If you want to take ENG 1 & 2, take this Professor! It is at your convenience, but you Can get an A... I DID
Prof. Gustin is a wonderful teacher. He is very clear and straightforward and gives plenty of time for assignments and exams. I was going to drop the class due to personal issues, but he encouraged me to stay in the class and was very helpful in catching me up on the classes I missed. He's a great teacher; I highly recommend him!
Whatever you do don't miss any assignments or test because they will lower your final grade by 1 whole grade. You might end up in the second week of class with no possiblity of getting an A.
I found Prof. Gusin very clear and helpful. I took an online class in the Winter 05 and was very pleased with the format of the discussion threads and assignments. Prof. Gusin was always avaliable to answer questions. Overall, the online experience was great.
Does not provide a lot of feedback on papers, and is brief when responding to emails, but assignments are informative. Be prepared for the tests.
He's a very nice professor. He's helpful, his study material's interesting and not as hard as some of the other English professors' out there. He's quick with feedback and a smart sense of humor. Oh and a nice grader too...i took an online class and it was really smooth.
I took the English 2 Online class with Mr. Gustin and it was a great experience. He is very helpful and provides very thorough information for the class assignments. If you do all the work, you should have no problem succeeding in his class. He was very helpful with comments on all the work as well.
does not respond to emails. for an online class, communication is crucial, and this professor simply isn't there for students.
Took online. Comunication poor. Extended deadline on assignment and when I email stating the system would not allow me to log on prior to new date he replied three days later saying sorry nothing I can do about it now. Would not recommend to friends.
I took the online course for winter, and it was great. I like working on the computer, so it was pretty fun. You don't really need to dedicate that much time and it's pretty easy to find out the type of answers he likes. As long as you don't procrastinate, you should be more than fine. I never really had to e-mail him.
I took English 1 online with Professor Gustin in Winter 2007. He is an easy grader, not too much reading as other professor. However, no draft paper for his class's essay. I'm going to take English 2 online with him for next semester.
Mike is not anything like what these people say. It is online cl****, but he expects effort and interest. Do the threads ON TIME and pay attention to CITATIONS and the rest is taken care of. ****igned readings are also pretty cool, so in all, its nothing at all to complain about. And he does in fact comment on writing and respond to email. He's cool!
This teacher is really not helpful. Is not interested in helping the students and his replies through e-mail are cold and unfriendly. Within the 3rd week of class I had no chance of getting an A and was barely holding onto a B and I hadn't missed any assignments. Grades harshly and lowers grades on stupid tiny mistakes. DON'T TAKE HIM!!
Professor Gustin's class is a breeze. I choose to take it online for summer 2007 and it suprised me how easy it was. All you have to do is do the discussion threads and make sure you use correct citations for your work and you will be sure to get a good grade. I spend about 2 hours/wk doing classwork and I have an A with only one assignment left.
I enjoyed Professor Gustin's English 2 course. I took the 8 week online version over Fall semester. I probably spend about 2-5 hours a week doing assignments. Just make sure to do all assignments (on time!) to the best of your ability and it will be a breeze. Discussion thread points are too easy to pass up! He is a nice guy & helpful.
took the online 8 week course. Really good experience. 6 assignments + discussion threads. Do the discussion threads on time and to the best of your ability and make sure of citations and you'll be good to go! got an A it was worth it. I would take another class with him for sure
As a budding young English student I was swayed by popular opinion to receive instruction from this hack, for lack of better words. Will not email students, does not comment on writings only grades. This "instructor", has an automated free response poetry exam. Need I say more, avoid at all costs if you desire to enrich your college experience.
At first I thought he was a bit of a jerk, but I soon realized it was my own error in not understanding some basic English terminology. This was my first college course ever. I did it online, and have no regrets as I ended up getting a 4.0 He chooses from fairly progressive topics for discussion and paper writing, so staunch Republicans beware.
to the angry comment below: he does email you and is very clear in what he tells you and in what he wants from you. his poetryexam, as his literature exam, is standard and straight-forward. if your read what he asks you to read (10ish short storiesand a few dozen poems in an 8 week class) then you get an A on exams. he also grades with comments
Written assignments are easy and he often extends the due dates. The class is very chill, except for the exams. However, the essays can compensate for the exams... he's a very lenient grader. Doesn't require as much reading as other english 2 professors, except for the final. Recommended.
Loved it! Straight forward no frills, mixed up essays, quizs and threads. Read the assignments and post ontime and you are certain to get an A!! I emailed him 3 times and he responded the same day each time.
I took the 6 weeks, online, summer session of this class. It was a very challenging class and I felt like I was on the computer all the time but he was helpful and quickly answered any questions I had. If you do the work you will get a good grade. Highly recommended!!
HEs alright, I mean as long as you read the reading and do the work, you should be fine! 4 essays and 2 online exams and 6unit discussions thats all you need to do! but oyu must be focused on his notes and lectures to do good on the exams otherwise you cant get a good grade.
gustin made me totally stress out
Folks, please pay attention to those "five stars" comments, they were like a year ago! He gives out so many work which is really hard.. I?m taking 8-week online class and it just used up all my time.... I can?t even squeeze out some time to study my other classes... DO NOT TAKE HIM PLEASE
I'm an international student. English is never easy, especially it's my second language, but I think the professor is really helpful, he always answerd my emails in details. Discussions and exams are not hard, just read through all the materials you'll do fine. There are only 4 essays and 1 novel reading. I think I'll end up with a B. Take him :)
Not a fan. I'm taking his 8-week online class, and he is actually a harsh grader and will significantly lower your grade for making tiny mistakes. His comments on graded essays aren't usually more than a few sentences, making it difficult to know how to improve. My grade doesn't reflect the effort I've put in. Take a non-online class instead.
Despite all the negative comments left here, I thought this class was awesome! I loved all the readings, none of them were boring, and he was very helpful if you asked any questions. Obviously you have to put in some effort but I was taking 12 units and working part time and I managed just fine. I love this professor!
Has a weird way of grading which makes it very difficult to get an A. Also, doesn't give credit for last minute work.. I found out the hard way and it cost me a letter grade... I don't recommend... there are other more flexible and helpful teachers.
Very fair, he is a good teacher.
Took Eng1 online, 8 week course. Really enjoyed it. It was a lot of work, with 6 essays, but they were all of manageable lengths. He was very helpful and prompt with answering emails, and even extended a few deadlines upon request. Seemed very reasonable and spirited about what he was teaching. Only the main textbook and novel are needed.
Great teacher...He's a decent grader, not too hard or too easy. I can see how he could be misunderstood as a hard grader but if you actually show the least bit of interest in the work, he is very willing to help you earn the grade you desire in his class. Great instructor!
His 8 wk online class was fun and pretty easy IF you do the work. Work load is not bad at all. Do the assigned readings, do the online discussions, do the essays, but definitely PREPARE for the tests! They were easy because I prepared, but would've been hard otherwise. Easy A if you do the work.
Took him online, he sucks. Loads of work, and weird grading system. Reduces lots of points for little mistakes, his writing assignments are sometime unclear. The exams are weird and unclear. He gives very little credit for discussion threads, if you do on the last day (even if it's way before deadline hours). The readings are interesting tho.
Took his Eng 2 online class based on the recommendations here. Big mistake! I'm a good student, mostly As and Bs... But I had a hard time in his class. Weird assignments, strange lectures, very little guidenes. The essay requirements are not clear. Would not recommend.
I am taking his 6 week summer, online class. But I am enjoying his class! :) His readings/assigments are interesting. He seems nice too! But I think his grading system is weird. His assignments are unclear and confusing at times. But if you have a question, ask! He will always respond to his email. Easy A if you put in the time and work!
Took 6 week summer online course. Convenient but lots of reading and writing but if you stay on top of it it really isn't hard. If you are intelligent in your writing skills you should to have a problem. He is a helpful teacher and will email you back ASAP. Even extended some deadlines. I would recommend. Remember, a bit of writing/reading
You cannot be lazy in this class if you want an A. I took English 1 online. There was a lot of reading required as well as an essay pretty much every week. Those 8 weeks were intense but I did learn a lot.
I took Prof. Gustin's online, condensed class. He's a helpful teacher who may extend deadlines if he sees his students need more time. Easy enough to get an A.
Took the 8 week online class. He's very helpful and lays out a clean easy schedule. It's very easy to follow. Just read directions thoroughly and actually try. Typically consisted of discussion post w/ 2 responses to others x a week. 2 major tests, 3 essays (2 from text, other one from the book ragtime). Oh and don't wait till the last day = 0 pts.
I didn't meet Michael so I have a limited view of him. I took the online class over 8 weeks, and boy it's a lot of work. Don't expect to get off easy, you'll be writing an essay a week with other homework and a 'complex' book to read. I must admit, I didn't even read the book because I simply didn't have time. It's a tedious and fast paced course.
Professor Gustin's assignments make the class interesting. It seems like he bases reading selections on things enjoys. When professors put time and effort into making a class interesting, everybody benefits. He is helpful, responsive, and gave extensions. I took two English classes with Professor Gustin and I would recommend him to anybody.
Don't expect an easy A. This class requires a lot of work! After all, this is a college class and a tough subject. You need to make sure to post to the discussions and REPLY to 2 other student's posts and it's very important not to post on the last day! He doesn't give any credit for those who do that. Don't be afraid to ask for help! He's Great!
Mike is one of the most understanding and helpful professors I've had. The material in his courses are worthwhile and his passion for teaching is evident. He simulates an in-class experience and assigns an appropriate amount of work. If you're a diligent student, you will not be dissapointed. He's also a great guy. I highly recommend him!
Took 8-week online course and though it was a lot of reading, the assignments weren't too time consuming or overwhelming. He was always available via email and kind enough to extend deadlines if he noticed the class struggling. I'm definitely taking his Engl 2 class.
I really enjoyed this class! Professor Gustin is extremely helpful and his discussion/essay prompts were always very engaging. Some of the reading may challenge your critical thinking skills (in a good way!) But hey if you don't like homework/thinking why are you here anyway?
AMAZING online class. I loved being in this class so much. I took it as a 6-week winter course and it is extremely reasonable, and Gustin is a very good teacher. He truly wants you to pass his class, and gives you all the tools in order to do so. There are 4 essays, but they are very straight forward and simple. Take this class you'll love it!
Prof. Gustin's class is really easy. I took his 6 week online course and it was very manageable. 4 essays and 2 short exams. Don't buy the book! All material can be found online (if taking the online class). Would definitely recommend.
He was great! I did the online 6 week course and loved it!
I took the 6 week class and enjoyed it. Some thought provoking material made writing the papers more interesting. Was not difficult and I learned a lot! Would definitely take another class taught by him.
I like professor Gustin, he cares about his students if you put in your fare share of work. You have to meet the deadlines, just like at any other job. I took his 8 week online course, the pace was hideous. If you have other classes, you psychically will not have enough time for everything. Lots of reading, so you'll just have to skim the books.
Loved his online class! Make sure you stay on top of all the readings. He gives feedback and helps to improve your work before the due date. Great professor!!! I would 100% recommend!
I took Prof. Gustin's 8 week online class and loved it! I enjoyed all of the reading material and actually really enjoyed doing the discussion posts. You really have to stay on top of the homework if you take the 8 week version but the assignments are not hard. He lets you submit essays early for review before they are due which I highly recommend!
Professor Gustin is such a good professor. Assignments: 4 essays , about 3/4 exams, discussions every week but all these assignments are easy if you read the poems and the book . The poems are engaging and interesting so it isn't a dread to read it. Im bad at english but I passed. Totally recommend him.
I took this course as a last minute 6 week add on, for the 2nd half of an already packed spring semester. It is absolutely manageable! Professor Gustin embraces creativity and definitely wants you to comprehend the subject matter- think of it as an Art Appreciation course that focuses on really lovely literature. Each exam focuses on discussions!
Great experience with this professor.
