He's hot, he's a fun professor and really sweet :-) i'll take anything he teaches!
Very down to earth, clear, and entertaining. Two thumbs up.
Good lectures but long final essay :-(
Took every class he taught while I was there. Great professor. Entertaining! Goes out of his way to help students. Take careful notes and don't worry to much about the readings!
Fun class. Learned a lot. cute
taking him for campaigns -- easy to watch and to listen to. doesn't seem to use book much
right wing rhetoric a bit thick at times. clearly very intelligent and competent however
Great guy, great class. Wonderful professor. clear and concise, with a dry sense of humor. Understanding. Not bad too look at either, looks great and a T and jeans.
Albeit it is polisci 101, the class is rediculously easy and he's a welcome and refreshing relief from the leftist b.s. you get from most other professors.
Excellent professor! Lucid, funny, understanding, highly intelligent. Managed to be informative and not boring in a lecture class of almost 300. You won't regret taking a course with him.
GREAT! Wish all my teachers were like him!
Mike was the man. Easy ass class. The midterm was CAKE, the final is the same thing. TAKE THIS CLASS.
i don't think the class is that easy! professor is really funny but doesn't use the books so much. he is def. cute
Final was cake. Posts the answers and the questions 10 days ahead. Lectures are actually interesting. Great professor -- take the class. Very funny
Very good lectures. a little disorganized on the grade part -- pretty hot for an older guy
Great lectures. Funny but uses a lot of good examples and keeps people awake which is hard. grading system was hard to figure out and prs didn't always work. great prof though.
the hottest older man i have ever seen. its nice when it gets really hott in the class and he has to take of his jacket. Definitly worth going to. ohh interesting topics too
This guy is awesome. Great lectures and very interesting discussion sections. Testing style makes you learn the material but is easy because he posts potential questions online then selects a few for the test. Papers are graded fairle. Go to class and study the stuff he puts online and you'll be fine.
Great professor. Good lectures -- funny and he kept people awake. I wanted to have more links of ameri. pol. to current events. he even did a few of the discussion sections which was nice. def. on the cute side.
Maybe the smartest Prof on campus, but definitely the funniest! Liked his teaching style, classes are relaxed... only sign up if you've got what it takes - he'll figure you out anyways. Seems tough on the outside but he's actually a real sweet "Mensch" :)
Took campaign course -- great topic and a good prof. he had a lot of practical experience and kept people awake in class. He gave out the terms and questions ahead of time so the tests weren't hard if you did the readings.
You will understand politics beter than ever and this class is a must take for polli sci at Umass. Best tteacher I've ever had at Umass he is the best. Take any class with him you will learn somthing. the role of American politics
very hot very funny
Very approachable and easy-going. He obviously knows what he is talking about...and yes, he is a beautiful man.
Good guy, enjoyable class, though I don't reccomend it for a Gen Ed. For Polisci Minor or Major or someone who is genuinely interested in Politics it's a good pick. Weekly papers can be annoying to do, but they're not difficult. TAs are cool.
he's a good guy. the class is interesting, a lot of reading, but it's well chosen. aside from exams grading is from your TA- based on weekly papers 2pgs. don't take it if you have no interest in the subject, but dont not take it just cause you're not a polsci major.
he's a nice guy...i'm not very interested in political science, so this really wasn't a class for me. it seems good if this is what you are interested in. overall not bad, but def. not my style.
this guy knows a lot, and makes it easy for you to know a lot. even if you don't want to, you can pass the tests by just looking at the the study guide, which includes everything that is on the tests.
took him for campaigns and learned a ton -- i was a pol. junkie. he is very interestings. sometimes rambles but the stories are fun. funnyt and hot and smart -- nice combo
Took American political thought with him. If you do the reading and keep up, his lectures make a lot more sense. Very nice and fair professor and a genuinely good guy.
Keep class interesting. Lots of readings. Will learn a lot from him. He's had a lot of political experience, so he's not just an academic theorist.
Good professor, very easy to understand and goes over readings with good examples. a bit intimidating if he comes to discussion sections, do def do your readings, or at least skim cuz he sometimes goes to discussions and you're screwed if you don't...oh and pretty good looking.
funny and expereinced so the class has a lot of good stories. gets off syllabus sometimes and grades come late. fun for listeining and looking
Took three classes with him. He is really good at keeping you awake and interested and very funny. Cute for a guy old enough to be my dad. fair grader sometimes gets off syllabus
Knows a lot, but kind of rambles on in lectures and doesn't really connect the dots between concepts. He's definitely down to earth and approachable.
fantastic professor, interesting, relates current events, extremely smart, one of the best professors i've had
i'm taking american politcs..awesome guy, and for that reason i kind of felt bad that i never went to the lectures (he told us he doesnt count prs for anything). i have an easy TA, so i'm doing wicked well..only three grades for the whole class
easy class, fun professor. interesting talks
He is a funny guy Takes pride in keeping your awake for 50 mins. His notes suck very pointless. His notes wont help on the exam. Dont buy the book you don't need them and you will get back $20 for $80 worth of books.I would say not a bad class he gives you a study guide and if you follow that you should get a good grade.Pretty much straight forward
Approachable, interesting lectures. Tends to get off topic and doesn't really teach 'for the tests'. You have to put it all together by yourself.
Honestly one of the worst professors i've had. His notes made very little sense and seemed to have no meaning. A fairly nice guy, but gets easily off topic and made material unnecessarily philosophical.
Good Teacher. Did not post slides online but if you went you understood the material much more. Not boring and the midterm and final were mostly writing. All the grading is done by the T.A. and you had a write a 2 page paper every week, with one allowed to be dropped.
This guy. Let's just say I do not recommend him for any class on any subject whatsoever. He's a nice guy but he's by no means a professor, of political science or any other science. Plus he curses during a lecture more than any professor I've ever had. Yes we're in college but nonetheless, it's unprofessional. His partner Lonce isn't any better.
Post below is ridiculous!! One of the best professors I've had because he makes you think. And he's funny. And Lonce is HILARIOUS.
Hannahan is the man. The most politically incorrect professor of political science you'll ever have. Mad funny too. As for this class, its really boring and the lectures are kind of incoherent.
This guy. He does not know how to teach. This experience epitomized the phrase "teach yourself" because that is literally what you had to do to pass. No matter what he teaches it all sounds like one big class. I've had him twice. He doesn't even have steady office hours...needless to say, he has no time to be a professor. I DO NOT recommend him.
Michael Hannahan is one of my absolute favorite professors! He is hilarious, and his points about political life are often surprisingly profound, even if they may seem a bit ludicrous at first. He's very laidback, and his knowledge about Massachusetts Politics (the subject) is rooted in a lot of experience. If not this class, def take one with him.
politics through film - his slides are a little confusing and he tends to "wing it" when it comes to the syllabus. You need a netflix account to get the movies which sucks because the shipping is so slow. But overall an easy class and you get to watch a ton of good movies
I like Mike, he's a smart, cool guy, no doubt about it but as a professor, not so much. His slides are barren so you have to listen and that's fine but you get the assignments and all you can think is "wtf?" He's all over the place and I just don't get it. But he's likable so...
Thought he was a nice guy until I tried to approach him about different aspects of the class. Cold and unreasonable, kind of a jackass.
really good prof. interested in mass politics and has lots of experience in the state house and local govt. brought in 2 state reps for quest speakers and always lets out class early. take his class
I hate everything about poltics and managed to get a B in this class. I went to a lot of the lectures but not towards the ends. Slides are all online. Discussions are annoying but mandatory. Review the slides/texts before discussion. Quizes are easy even if you didn't watch the movies. Tests are easy too. All essays.
not just a point by point class but if you follow you can pick up a lot about politics. lectures are entertaining
Awesome professor, very clear on assignments. Midterm and final were take homes, TA's are great also. Very knowledgeable professor and hilarious, Would recommend him to anyone even if it's not your major.
Real easy class, even though Hannahan isn't clear and doesn't seem to care about people other than himself.
Very interesting class and I really enjoyed it. Hannahan is a very clear and funny. Definitely take it if you have an interest in politics. Fairly easy too and the weekly papers aren't graded very hard.
LOVE THIS PROFESSOR! Took controversies in pub pol during '12 presidential election and he literally changed the whole race for me. got so much more out of it than I would've without him. Probably the BEST public speaker I have EVER witnessed. Could listen to him talk all day, highly recommend ANY class with this man. Picks good TAs too.
Wonderful teacher with a great sense of humor. Took a few classes with him these summers. A very jolly fellow besides being a very knowledgeable person.
interesting lectures. don't really relate to midterm/final though. mandatory discussions. good ta's
This teacher will not make time to meet with you. Rarely returns emails. Will not issue make up exams unless you fight his department. Extremely fusteratig I would not recommend his class he is a self interested professor.
guys was pretty awesome
Good class and lecture. You have to watch all the films on your own time though. If you don't think you actually will watch them and you'll just Wikipedia the summaries (it can be tempting), the class wont really be worth it. The films are good though, so you should take this class and watch them.
Professor Hannahan is a very interesting man with strong opinions. I believe he worked under Mitt Romney when he was Governor of MA and has held various other prominent positions. He is moderately conservative but very respectful of all views. I myself am liberal and found his perspectives to be somewhat eye-opening.
Don't take this class if you're already interested in and knowledgeable about politics...you will be bored to tears! He puts outlines of lectures online and our midterm/final had a lot of choice. I didn't really have to do any of the readings other than the ones he mentioned in lecture. Watching the movies gets really boring.
Hannahan is a very interesting professor and will keep your attention in class. Midterm was a take home and wasn't bad and online quizzes were fairly easy. Keeping up with the movies isn't bad because they're all good. Good history gened if you have some interest in politics.
Really easy class. All the test questions are on the book's companion website and the final was an exact copy of the guide. This teacher is not too available as he's usually away in some other country. I got a 100 on the final and 98 on the midterm and ended up with an A-! Didn't even change my grade ugh.
Straightforward class. Weekly movies, readings & reflection papers. 1 missed discussion/2 missed lectures permitted. Lecture slides posted online. Good lectures but too vague on text materials if you want more out of course (i.e.,Toqueville/Mckibben/Foy/Federalist 10). As others state it should be an easy A.
Great teacher, entertaining. Would answer students questions when asked. He is the only non far left polisci professor in the Umass department and offered a nice change of pace.
This class was very easy but I couldn't believe it was a 200 level class. I learned virtually nothing and Hannahan condescended to the class the entire time. If you have any real interest in politics or in film & film theory, do not take this class. It's an absolute joke.
Hannahan is a funny guy who wants you to do well. Took this class for an easy history gen ed and boy was I glad I did. 1 take home midterm, easy assignments (2-3 pg opinion papers, do it and you get a check plus), and one final. Make sure you get a good TA bc they're the ones who grade everything. Enjoyed the movies, very little stress. Recommend!
This class has almost nothing to do with film. Sometimes he references the movies during lecture. Sometimes.
I find this class to be so unorganized. He told us we were supposed to have movie quizzes and we never have. I never watch the movies but it doesn't seem to matter. Movies are never mentioned in lecture and discussions don't really connect to lecture. I thought it would be more interesting than it was and I find the professor to be arrogant.
He's a little strict about attendance, but basically the only homework is watching movies and reading a bit, so it's understandable. His lectures are interesting and he's a funny guy, so class doesn't drag. Take-home midterm, the final is scheduled but is only on material from past the midterm. Not a difficult polsci class or HS gened
Very easy class, especially for someone who isn't interested in political science. watch movies every week and usually have a 3 page paper due every discussion. easy grading, however
One of the best classes I have taken at UMass.
Really interesting lectures! You don't need to watch all of the movies.
He is the worst professor I have ever taken a class with at UMass. I took 201 online and he didn't respond to emails. His Moodle was completely disorganized. The lectures were so broad, I didn't learn a thing. He was not understanding of extenuating circumstances at all. Avoid his classes like the plague. Thinks he's better than teaching undergrads
The class is supposed to be American Politics through film. The films were not spoken of even used, every lecture he just went on rants about his own personal interests. Very unorganized and the TAs are hard grades and discussions do not help at all, they also talk about random stuff. Only grades are 4 papers, final, and 10 page midterm.
Overall, Hannahan is a knowledgeable and respectful professor, but I think students are confused because it is supposed to be a film class, yet the films are rarely discussed. I took this class because I wanted to learn about how American Politics was illustrated through movies, but that was not the case. Just an ordinary politics class.
This class is basically AP Gov; if you want to learn about the very basics of politics, or just want an easy gen ed, this class is for you. The films are not mentioned much so there is not really a reason to watch them. Hannahan is not a great lecturer and just kind of rants about Republicans every class, so it's up to you if you're ok with that.
Professor Hannahan's class was interesting and was on the easier side. My discussion section was great, and the lectures were good. I'm a PoliSci major and this was a good intro class, and I would also recommend it as a gen ed. Some of the movies were boring and outdated, and I would describe them as more historical than culturally relevant now.
If you're interested in receiving the personal firebrand opinions of Mike Hannahan a few times a week without actually expanding your knowledge of polisci, or if you're interested in joining a cultural exchange program designed exclusively for Mike to run around pretending he's Will McAvoy from The Newsroom, this is the perfect class for you.
Sure, Hannahan as well as the TAs are rude and clearly don't care about this class at all. He didn't even know what time class started/ended and there are no grading criteria for papers. Sure, the class is not related at all to the films we were supposed to watch. But it was a pretty easy class. You don't have to do the readings or watch the films.
Class is made up of 4 (very easy) papers and the final but the lectures nearly have no correlation to the films and barely connect with the assignments. It's honestly just professor Hannahan spewing and somewhat covering the topic of discussion. He does not go over textbook or movie material in class but you will need them to complete the papers.
Professor Hannahan is one of my favorite professors I have had. His lectures are engaging and interesting. There are a few papers throughout the course and the midterm and final are taken home. He is very reachable and loves participation, but doesn't force it. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and found it difficult to not pay attention.
Here's the deal: if you are a PoliSci major, this class is going to be the easiest four credits of your life. It's just APUSH/ PoliSci 101 again, but with some movies and readings you don't really need to watch/read. If you aren't a PoliSci major, pick another gen ed. you'll need to learn a lot and it's hard to learn from the lectures
Do not take this class if you are into movies. The movies are barely mentioned in class, and there are so many random readings that are also very rarely mentioned. There are 4 papers, a midterm, and a final (which is 40% of your grade and on every single reading and movie assigned, despite them rarely being actually talked about in the class).
Mike is clearly a smart and experienced guy, but was not in my experience an effective professor. The lectures are boring and consist of rambling tangents with no slides or actual content. The movies are required but aren't integrated into the lectures, assignments, or readings, and the whole class feels disjointed. Attendance policy overly strict.
This class is not online anymore. The class is so heavily weighted on your midterm and final (over 60% of your grade) and the only other grades it term papers and attendance which barely move your grade at all. The lectures are useless and the exams are on movies and readings you have to do on your own and there is a lot. Don't take as a Gen Ed
He assigns movies and readings every week. For the final he says it will be focused on the movies and the readings but the entire final is only focused on the readings and not a single question is about the movies so don't waste your time watching them. Kind of ridiculous for a class called American Politics Through Film.
Professor Hannahan likes to hear himself talk more than he likes to lecture. His lectures often have little do with the course work and at times appears to be more opinion than fact. The 2 exams account for 60% of your grade. Students are often left confused how to study for these exams as it is hard to distinguish the facts and the Profs opinion.
This class was a mess. How is it film course if the films were barely mentioned in class. Lectures have no correlation to what we read or watch. The Professor would cover basic political topics but would go on endless opinion-based rants. Assignments are 4 papers and 60% of your grade is reliant on 2 exams. Not difficult if you keep up. rate it 6
Nothing of substance is ever said in lectures. You are graded heavily on the midterm and final, but most of the material on it is never discussed in lecture nor the movies. He gives lengthy study guides, but they are useless in terms of what is actually on the exams. The TA is nice and discussions are a little helpful.
do not take this course if you don't have to, if it is for a history gen ed literally take anything else. Your whole grade is based on a final and a midterm that he never discusses in class even though attendance is mandatory, they are based on a ton of movies and reading you do on your own. this class sucked do not take it.
I would describe Professor Hannahan as fine, but the class as great. PoliSci 317 had lots of guest speakers and whenever there was a guest lecturing the class was interesting. But when it was just Hannahan it would tend to drag. Terrible feedback, felt like my papers weren't actually read and if there was a response it was only ever semi-coherent.
