Annoying voice, very easy but boring
No Comments
Hare was slow and boring and got off topic very easily which often dragged on...
Easy if you have old tests...he repeats them every year.
No point in going to class. He mumbles and grumbles. Just do old tests.
failed if go to class and read the book, get high marks if you do the old tests
Good for a 2 hr nap. Scribbles on the overehead while mumbling.
Funny sometimes but some classes just don't know what the heck he's saying
Soooo EASY, Just do old tests! Too much reading, don't got to lecture, just tut
just study the old tests. nice guy, looks like a grandpa and hates mornings too
Monotonous voice, sometimes interesting, easy course.

really nice guy...almost failed his class...it's all about the old tests

the sweetest man, looks like winnie the pooh, just memorize old tests for 90+
he is weird!
This big prof, can't teach. He draws lines for graphs out of no where!
encouraging and wants his students to succeed...
he has set ways, but tries to be fair. lectures boring, but could be material
Sounds like Joe Clark. WAY too many abbreviations. Tries to be funny but......
final mark was lower than expected :-(...maybe got bellcurved down...
old tests are where it's at
No Comments
E-mailed him for help & he said: 'I don't do e-mail', this is the 21st century!
Dull.
Just study old tests and you're set as he repeats the EXACT same questions.
Very, very nice man. Tests are straightforward
Tutorials are very important for getting answers to past exam questions.
Very boring, too many abbreviations, very messy. Past exams are key.

VEEEEEEEEEEERY Boring
Every year's exams are practically the same!!!!
Easy course and as mentioned the key are studying past exams and tests as the ones you will do are near carbon-copies. Boring prof., but clear. Scary how many times he joyously talks about the Blue Jays and spring training.
Excellent teacher! Made economics very interesting. I liked his special topic on productivity growth!
He draws random lines and makes his OWN abbreviations, but his tests are exactly like past ones, overall I'vehad worse!
Boring class, but a very nice man!
Very easy class - Hare was a character, which some people like in a professor. He would spend half the class talking about the Kyoto accord for the first half of the year though. It was interesting the first few times, but not the last 25.
mildly amusing. interesting character!! he's actually retired now (2003) but is still teaching, i think he has nothing better to do.... exams are just like past tests...
when you got past worrying if he was going to drop dead or fall over at the beginning of class he was moderately amusing. Likes macro but dont disagree with him about government intervention. :) Tries to be fair and is very helpful and accommodating.
Very easy if u can get a hold of old answer keys. I skipped most of the lectures because they were quite boring. Much easier then some of the other eco100 profs at U of T.
this man is so right-wing he should move to Wyoming...i've had enough of his anti-Liberal sentiments
Hare is very disorganized in his lectures (though lecture outlines pretty clear.) I am happy that his term tests and exams look virtually the same as the old ones.
In summer 03,the tests are copying from his pass papers. So many students got a high mark for the 1st test80-90%. So, he made the 2nd test harder and many got low marks40-60%. Exam is not easy to gain marks. Many my friend did badly. Aware it.
messy graphs/didn't explain material very well/ relied on memorizing old tests and reading text/jokes lame/very political/got screwed on final exam. Overall, awful experience.
Absolutely horrendous prof, mumbles in a monotone throughout the lecture, have no idea what he's going on about half the time.
BORING: I don't think it's him, but just the course itself. I had the evening class which was a couple of hours too long. Words of advice: coffee and imagination.
I just finished reading the comments and although I took his courses from 69 to 72 he sure hasremained the same. Only the Topics havechanged
tests taken directly from problem sets. no tricks, easy to get high marks if you do the problems. disorganized in lectures but has a clear course format
Lectures are OK, BUT I can't follow this man's diagrams. The lecture is truly a 'lecture': He doesn't ever pause to guage the level of comprehension of the class.
The diagrams are a little messy but at least he draws it in class so that you know how it was created. Tests are very similar year after year. Very similar.
HA! didn't read anything. didn't do problem sets. studied notes and old tests and went to tutorial. its was an easy good mark foor approx. 3 hours a week.
He's UofT's "Jolly old man!". His classes are entertaining and very informative. Very helpful and extremely smart!!!
he is sooo cute!! he's a wonderful man and his lectures were very interesting and very 'real'..so many of his concepts came in use for other classes.
Didn't go to class, but still found the tests easy. I'd definitely recommend him.
This dude is a joke. During the lectures he goes off topic a lot, his diagrams are too messy. He adds a lot of stuff in that course which other professors don't. He may be predictable though. Anyway, he should be kicked out of U of T.
AMAZING! He is the smartest economics prof ever! If you are interested in economic development this is the prof to talk to! He is so intelligent. It was the best course I have ever taken and the most applicable.
Best professor for first year economics. Makes old tests available. Easy to follow and tests do not vary from year to year.
I really regret not doing well in this class..it's not that hard if you understand the concepts & do old tests/problem sets, because the new tests are derived (exactly) from those problems. Many ppl did well in this course because they studied effectively.
Good Course. Funny Prof. The above quote who says it's no work probably got a 65. Lectures and Readings are very similar to give you a good understanding. The Final 50% Exam is based upon your understanding.
I thought this class was pretty difficult actually, he covered a lot of things other profs didn't, and not so much theory..everything was graphing & quite extensive sometimes w/all the conditions. But it was good that he made his old tests available..
he sux big time!!!!
he could have taught it a lot better - skipped A LOT of steps..had to get outlines from other university's/course's websites to understand the material. overall, not a great experience..
By far the most boring prof of all time
if u've nvr taken eco DO NOT CHOOSE HARE. He lectures in a completely diff order than all the other profs & is the ONLY 1st yr prof who's tests are all quotes where u have to: state ur position, draw graph(s)&explain (no MC or short ans!). also MONOTONE!
Hare was an amazing prof. He was easy going and so knowledgeable! I did soooooo well in this class just cuz i was really motivated to learn and do well cuz of him. The class is hard yeah, but he is an excellent prof. One of the best profs i've eva had.
This class was incredibly difficult and extensive. He made it harder with his monotone voice. However, if you have previous years tests, you are in luck. They are very similar but the marks you'll get depends on the markers.
The course is pretty difficult; I would have preferred another ECO prof for first year 'cause he didn't explain things all that well; DO NOT buy the textbook for this course -- it's useless -- you don't refer to it all; If you miss a class, you're screwed
Amazing and very smart. Maybe you have to be an upper year economics student to fully appreciate the inteligence that is Professor Hare.
Regarding the last comment, prof. Hare is a very intelligent man BUT for first yr students,I agree that he could have made the material more accessible. ECO105 is apparently easier if you want a higher GPA.
He's the reason why I continued my studies in economics!!

No note taking needed. As long as u go to tutorials do problem sets and study old tests, a guaranteed B. Dont know how long he'll be teaching though, his health is questionable.
Economic Development is a very interesting field, and he obviously knew a lot about it...BUT there was a ridiculous amount of reading (from expensive readers) and the tests were harder than necessary-and he blamed the low class average on us not studying!
The worst prof in the world! He completely killed the subject for me. He should be fired.
If you can stay awake through his lectures, you'll find them to be quite interesting. But that's IF you can stay awake...
he's boring, but if you do past tests, you'll do well.. he's fare .. no curve balls..
Jus straight proper!!!
His tests were fair, at least. His classes are very boring though!
such a professor. cutest old man. past tests and tutorials key. don't need the reader. a helicopter for everyone!
Kind of dissapointed to hear that other classes were doing simpler things, especially since I wasn't going into further economics. However, I would recomend him for further Economic advancement since you seem to get a deeper knowledge of economic theory with him.
If you have good spatial skills & do problem sets consistently, you can do well. That said I nearly failed because I have horrible spatial skills, whereas all my other classes were in the B+ range. Consequently I really, really regret taking this course - for an easier time, find a diff. section.
althought the lectures are extremely boring but is still quite helpful (well every lecture is anyway). give prof hare a break! at least he keeps using past test and exam papers LOL! props!
Yes, Prof Hare's lectures are boring. I hardly used to go to lectures. However, ever since I talk to him in his office, my whole perspective on prof Hare has changed. Not only is he extremely intelligent, he treats students with respect and dignity. (TRY TO STAY AWAKE THOUGH)
He is a very good proff knows his stuff and very intelligent as well tries to interact with sutdents byapplying the theories you learn about in class to our everyday life and tisng that really concerns us to know baout if continuing in economics

This guy is THE most boring prof I've had in UofT by far.. He talks for hours with the same tone, and most of the class is sleeping! Although knows his stuff, I suggest he retires as soon as possible because many of the students get decent grades due to tutors or own ability!

Unfortunately Professor Hare's attempts at keeping his lectures interesting failed MISERABLY and it was a fight to stay awake. Perhaps because I am not very interested in the subject, but it was painful. Tests were straightforward but difficult.
hare tried really hard, but unfortunately, the lectures can be rather dry. he seemed really nice, but i just didnt like the material whatsoever. i guess if you're into economics, you might really like the course.
Hare is a very nice person but a very disorganized prof. His tests are very straightforward. If you are planning to take Economics as a Specialist or a Major, I would suggest not taking Prof. Hare. This is my most hated class this year (I just don't like the Economics, not Prof. Hare's fault).
needs to make his lectures interesting ..very very boring ! feels like he's speaking to himself
tests are basically the same from year to year. the lecture notes he makes explain just about everything you need to know for the tests. i'm not particularly interested in economics, but if you need a decent mark to help your gpa, take this one. trust me.
By far a terrible teacher! He may get good reviews from some students because he IS a very nice guy. However he a terrible teacher: fails to convey concepts, doesnt emphasize the right things, generally BORING. I would advice people before accepting him as a teacher! BEWARE!
Hare was, as many people said already, boring. But I think many people leave out how much information he taught. TONS of info. I learned a LOT. He speaks in a monotone, but aside from that, he teaches newbies a LOT about economics.. And the class is very easy if you study past tests ;)
i don't want to say that....but Hare is stupid. He is not a professor, he doesn't have a Phd, doesn't have a master, all he got was just a B-Com degree.... he is stupid, give you and impression that he doesn't even want to teach, overall, garbage!!
Worst class ever -- the sole reason my GPA was sub-3.0 my first year. You either burn or you fly in this course, at least when I took it the class distribution was all concentrated around the 80-100 range and then 40-50%. Had to inflate grades by around 10% to get them where he needed. Get Carr, he's apparently better & offers multiple choice exams
No Comments
all those bad comments about him for eco100 class should not be considered for students who are doing eco specialist or major- i mean if you ACTUALLY know economics- eco360 is valuable course and will help your thinking skills, strongly recommended only if you are willing to go to his lecture!
Do not get Hare for ECO100. As another person said, get Carr if possible, he's the easiest. His method of teaching is similar to MIT's, where he went for undergrad...I felt like this class was more a logic prep course than a nice introductory class. Tough if you're not innately gifted in eco.
Carr > Hare
Lectures are generally boring and confusing and his overhead notes are a complete mess (didn't even care if the students could read his pathetic writing). Don't EVER buy the Extract reader as it is nothing but a piece of huge and expensive rubbish. Despite of his horrible lectures, his old tests and lecture summaries have been quite helpful. I skipped his lectures in the second semester and survived his class solely because of tutoring.
very very very boring proff. impossible to copy his notes in class and his tests and exams are too long. we have to complete many long answer questions in only 45 minutes while other proffs give out mc's. the exam was unfair since he even told us that some of the qs we wouldn't know.

he's ok
Worst prof ever- if possible don't go take this course - if possibe, don't study economics !!!
Completely turned me off Economics. Hard to believe this guy is a professor.
Crappiest Prof. Ever. Sloppy writing (overheads), monotone voice, paces up and down then puts his ass on the wall. Tests are hard, no multiple choice. Terrible! Avoid Hare!
Do NOT take this class if Hare is the prof. He is the WORST prof! Horrible! I wonder if he's going to retire...... ever.
Well,he's ok.The extract is quite interesting and explains the material more fully.
Well, he isn't as bad as ppl say he is. If you pay attention to what he say, it's really helpful. Even though he does talk in a monotone and write really sloppy lecture slides, he doesn't seem like the type of prof that want students to fail.
The course is painfully boring and can be summarized by the word "productivity", but Hare stretches the theme out to a full-year course. Readings are way too long, material is very boring, and Hare puts everyone to sleep with his monotonous speaking tone and lack of interaction with the class. He's very friendly though.
boring
This class is staright forward and the test questions are easy to predict. YOU MUST go to class though---large emphasis on lecture material. He can be boring but bear with him- it is a GPA booster
His lectures are really boring but really clear and easy to understand... and they really stick in your head.
Interesting material, but the teaching wasn't particularly good. Lectures ranged anywhere from very interesting to virtually incoherent. Huge emphasis on labour productivity, which is good because talking about it is the best way to get good test grades. When taking this course, make sure you get as many past tests as possible.
Mumbles, low voice, hard to hear. Boring. Totally out of touch with modern economics. Nothing important to learn from his classes. A waste of time.
He mumbles, rambles in a monotone voice, making it boring and difficult to follow the class.
He's nice, but his lectures are confusing and the tutorials are crap. If you want to do well, all the material is presented much more clearly in the readings.
Overall good prof but needs to find a way to make lectures a little more engaging.
nice person. has a monotone voice though...
Hare's boring but helpful & loves what he is doing. He's retired and still lecturing. Tests are fairly consistent with past years. Attend lectures, it's easier than reading the textbook. If you really want to got to Ecoman, just attend the first session and grab the test package. The rest is practice esp. problem sets and previous test questions!
Just a note on previous tests and exams. It is also available at the ASSU which is at Sidney Smith rm 1068 for free!!! So instead of paying $40 to Ecoman for the test package, go to ASSU. Hare's handwriting is terrible and yes, he mumbles. Best if you can sit in the front. Tutorials are worse. Nobody speaks fluent English in the tutorials.
Poor teaching (communication, organization, presentation, logic) make this class more difficult than needed.
Poor teaching style, do not recomend the professor. Gives really bad notes as well as has really bad handwriting.
OK professor, monotone voice, the tutorials are a waste of time, but the tests aren't all that hard if you know what the prof wants.
If you can get over the fact that he drones on with seemingly no concern for the wakefulness of his students - he's actually a pretty good prof. Very smart... teaches at a pretty high level for first years. Avoid TA's who dont speak english (Mike and Ian are good). Alot of the questions TA's run through appear verbatim on exams!
He's an adorable old man but a terrible lecturer. So boring! I never went to class because all I could do was fall asleep.
Horrible.
A bit of a Luddite, with his no email and ancient overhead projector that breaks every week but other than that he's alright. Readings and lectures are sometimes interesting. Tests are fair and VERY predictable. I'd take another class with him.
He makes witty comments sometimes that just gets the class rolling in laughter. Tends to babble a bit too much sometimes, his delivery could use a little more intonation, but other than that he's a decent prof. Not the best, but certainly not the worst.
Ridiculous. When his slides are not hidden half in shadow and our requests to get rid of it are ever unsatisfied, his writing is illegible and graphs nonsensical. This man needs to retire NOW. I mean honestly. Nobody in my class ever has any idea what's going on except for people who have already taken Econ. Avoid at all costs.
eco360 with professor hare is awesome. hes such an easy going professor, doesnt care if your late, or never show up to class. tests are fair and actually based on the material in the extracts which is pretty rare at u of t. his lectures are boring but as long as the tests are fair who cares
Ancient Tree, But Amazing Wisdom! Go to his class and become an Economics enthusiast! Never learnt more in my life!
This guy is so old and his classes are so dull its so hard to focus, he is a very bad lecturer and he speaks in a monotone voice his writing is illegible and his old projecter always breaks every week and you cant see half of the slides THIS GUY IS LIKE IN HIS 70s-80s HE NEEDS TO RETIRE Ended dropping this class
Hare is a cute old man at first except for his monotone voice. He is passionate about economics (especially labor productivity which is literally all he talks about for the entire full year course). He sometimes uses complicated math/graphs during class but NEVER on tests - tests are always general short essay questions about different theories.
has a monotone voice - too much reading, makes you pay $150 for basically photocopying a textbook - seems to sneer at student's questions - interesting topics tho
Took him for eco360 and 324. Prof's voice is monotonous but easy to do well if you study smart. No need to buy any package, listen and take really really good notes, go over past exams (it is crucial as he uses the same sort of questions and themes).
Monotone but a very passionate economics professor. I learned a lot from him.
monotone.. speak too fast... hard to take a good note. but he is passionate about economics.
Hard to understand him. Treats class as we are ecionomic professionls. Doesnt really care aboout the students. Once i went to econ departmnet, ask one lady to contact him, cuz he didnt reply me. She said " mm.. maybe i should bother him and u solve all ur issues by urself?" What the..he never replied to anyone, how can u bother him then..
