funny, funny, funny--a thrilling professor and a somewhat adequate human being
Yes, he can teach--he has that down. But I go to class to check out his suits!
he's so smart, he's so smart, he's so smart...
hardly any homework, just a few papers and a few simple quizes
Very hard! He requires us to read two books in few weeks, grading is not easy too.
His examples are ridiculously simple compared to his assignments(i.e 2500 word essays that are Engl 1C level).Very picky at grading. He requires a lot from you, but he does not give much the class.
His class was based on American studies. He did not care whether or not you took history. It was a very ethnocentric class.
Also had him for 1A and I liked how he taught the class. You do a lot of in class discussion group work, them you go home and do whatever assignment needs to be done. I like the group discussions, because you get other's opinions. No expensive textbooks!
the guy can teach...my essay writing improved because of him... he is a pretty funny guy and seems like a good guy... he grades kind of hard, but it will force you to improve your writing... no text book so thats good...dont take him if you want an easy A
he gives you couple of options on the topic of your essay but you gotta choose from something he gives you which are all hard to write about... grades pretty hard too... if your not into take an easier teacher
you want to begin by commenting on the suits, but you stop; wanting to be helpful you move on to more eruidte issues: intellectual capabililty, wit, golf handicap. but then you just gotta shutup and admit: one of the best teachers on the planet.
Harper is a challenging professor who says so on the first day. Firm but Fair. Likes to see initiative in the students and will look favorably on you if you show it. class is tough but you are guaranteed to learn by it. Not recommended average students.
Yes, the class was pretty difficult but my writing has improved so much because of him. If you are looking for an easy A, do not take him. But if you really want to learn and have an exciting class, he is the perfect professor!!!!!
I dont like this guy. he seem mean to pepole dont spek english with excelent abilitys. i are ecconomic major from napal and he did not pass me for only reason of poor engrish skill but i get excelents on all other school abilitys but professor harper do n
Tough class if you don't keep up with the work. Had to read 4 books (but enjoyed them all). Make sure you spend a lot of time on your essays, and you should do fine.
extremely nice, understanding, and funny teacher. assigns little work but is picky with grading-ALWAYS wanting you to elaborate on things that need no further explanation. great class though!
very nice and friendly.
As his loafers scuffed the classroom floor, there was an overwhelming silence. His face stern,no smile to speak of EVER..cynical..lacks clarity & an appreciation for the artistic aspect of writing. This class had a negative impact on my GPA/self-efficacy.
I don't like this guy. He's nice until he's jerk, then he's just a jerk.
This teacher is awful. You explain and explain and he still writes (explian). His moto is "I don't care what you write, but how you write." Biggest load of bull ever. I gave an essay he gave me a C on to another teacher and they were perplexed.
The worst . . .just a awful teacher . . .not think he actually reads or essays
Class itself isn't that hard, but he's a tough grader for the specific class. I'm sure many 1A and beyond students wouldn't get an A. He did prepare me well for 1A though...
He is one of the best teachers I've had, the books he makes you read are very interesting. Harper is a very friendly teacher who cares about his students, he is also very helpful. If you're looking to learn then take him, but if you are looking for an easy teacher then, this is not your guy
He assigns four novels, from medium to over 300 pages in length. If you are a word or lit type, take his classes. If you know you're going to have a lot of essays in the future, take his classes. If you just need the credit, you might want to find a prof who assigns fewer and shorter novels.
he is very unfair, i did all my essays went to his office hours for help, i got tutering help, and is till recieved D's on all four of my essays tried really hard and recieved a D. retook a the class w/another teacher and passed with a B+.
Michael Harper is a very good teacher, he makes learning fun and intresting. You will do essays and read quite a bit, but the quizes are easy and don't summarize the essays!!! He will not give you good grades on the essays if they are summarized. Overall a very helpful, funny and easy to talk too.
Great Professor! Best I've ever had! I highly recommend Professor Harper for any class he might teach. He made me work hard and I learned a lot.
When i got my first essay back from his class, i thought i was going to get a heart attack. He gave me a D! I have never gotten a D on my essay in my life! i quickly dropped his class(very smart thing to do) and took a different class and got an A.
Very, very, very, very bad teacher!!! Very rude, and is not helpful at all!! I recommend him to people I don't like!!
well he hardly showed up for my classes, as for quizzes u'd be retarted if u can't pass them. however hes has high demands for his essays
got all a's on quizzes. even before he made them take home. got c's on the 3 essay's and ended up with a C in the class. makes me think he tossed out all of the quiz grades, or just didnt care. had the feeling he did not keep his word on what he wanted on the essay's, or grading
nice, funny, charismatic guy but the class is not that easy. very demanding with his essays, always asking "why?"--you'll find yourself repeating one point in five different ways if you want the a. 4 bks, 1 essay for each bk, detailed quizzes that simply test if you read or not, and the final.
He barely showed up to class which was a little frustrating, but overall still a very nice guy.He is kind of a nerd, but will make you laugh if you let him.He does require you to think a bit- not extremely easy or extremely hard. If you are an A or B student, Harper is a great choice for you. If writing is tough for you, take someone else.
Very good teacher. Lots of reading and kind of hard with essays but very helpful.
I took his class in session 1 of summer 2005. He is a good teacher A LOT of reading but easy, quizes are no brainer. He let us out early probably 2 hrs early but that's in summer. I suggest taking him in the summer.
he's a really good professor. he is approachable and very helpful. when i told him i had a hard time with my resources, he actually lent me a book he owned! really nice. he was absent a couple of times but it wasn't too bad. we still got through the semester fine.
He is excellent teacher and fun to be with. I would recommend his class as it certainly helps to enhance your writing skills. Sometimes he is irregular but covers up quickly. Only thing I was not happy about is the calculation of overall Grades. It is possible that he doesnot consider all the grades of quizes and essays and grades on his judgmnt.
He asked for your opinion but not really. If your perception or concept of certain idealogy conflicts with his .....do not take his class.
Great teacher. I hated english before I took his class. He is very helpfull if you have questions, accepts late papers if you are having difficulty, and is always available to help throughout the process. Spends a lot of time talking about the material before you have to write about it. I would suggest this instructor to anyone.

Very fun teacher to take and acctually makes use of the materials fees we all have to pay.
few are the teachers who make the mind tumesce, the imagination frolic, and the intellect grow--and who can do stand-up routines with the best of them; think Penn Gillette with a tad less hair, and you've got the picture of this singular teacher. slackers beware! you have to have a mind (with ideas!) to ace this class.
Good Teacher, learned alot of good technique from him, which will probably carry through all of my college career.
A wonderful teacher! One of my favorites at Mt. SAC! I actually learned how to think about something I read and write something coherent about it. He's a total nerd, but makes you laugh. Just get on his good side early, don't summarize plot in your essays and you'll do fine!
This professor likes to joke around alot and always has a cup of coffee(esp. at 4:oo in the afternoon). But all in all, i would recommend him to take as an english teacher because of the fact that he makes you analyze. Also i like the book selection he has for his students to read...very interesting.
Not helpful and mean. He gives you 4 boring books to read through the semester and all four essays are on those books. If you don't like reading, don't take him! He also grades hard!
i took him for all those classes. i didnt like him. he give us boring stuff to read. too many essays, andhe grades pretty hard. u have to be a pro writer to get an A in that class. he gives alotta busy work. he doesnt teach and usually lets class out early. there is no point in even going to his class. juss kno the hw and do the essay.
wow.. DONT TAKE IT!... he might seem nice so only because of that i stuck through but it screwed me over because he grades hard. he gives random quizes and gives essays back REALLLYYY late so you dont no how down in the hole you are till u prob wont be able to get out. I regret not dropping this, my friend dropped after the first day.
Do Not Take This Teaher! He doesn't care about the class and nothing productive happens when you go; he grades very hard; he might be the worst teacher I have ever had!
I agree that he is sketchy on the grading, but I think that everyone gets the greade they earned.Hands back stuff SUPER late so if you take him don't expect your first essay back until 3/4 through the semester.Despite this, he is a fantastic teacher and funny guy.You just can't be too uptight in his class.Relax, you'll get your stuff back eventually!
He helped a lot!!! Great sense of humor. He helped me become a better writer.
Grades a little hard.. very easy-going guy and somewhat sarcastic. Don't ever really get papers back, and he doesn't even take roll. Gets pissy when no one shows up to class, but who can blame them? Don't really do much in the class.. boring material.
Don't recommend him at all! 1)Always late, therefore you get to leave super late. 2) You won't get your papers back till the end of the semester. 3) Not very bright, not interesting 4) Grades extremely hard on papers (like he's perfect) 5) Only likes smart & good looking people. You decide. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
This class has been a waste of my time, didn't learn anything. This Instructor doesn't teach, he just bs's too much. He does not care about the class or you (the student). Gets angry if you ask questions. If you want to learn something, don't take him.
He is boring, he doesn't teach anything. Has you read boring****, and is such a hard grader on essays. So if you just want to read and write essays all the time then take him. I would encourage everyone to take someone else, he does not welcome questions and turns in essays super late so you dont even know how your doing in the class
Things you need to know: I didnt like the class,he is a hard grader, and didnt like the books/movie we had to write on,started out with almost 30 students and was down to 14/takeahint . Other stuff: He is good at teaching what he knows, you leave each class knowing exactly what you need to do, a page of notes on exams, let out early quite a bit.
Harper's class was pretty tough; it was mostly about thinking critically and analizing. The books are cheap and the story's are pretty short, but they're hard to understand and he expects you to understand. The essays were extremely difficult, and I usually like writing essays. Lots of group work. I usually like English, but I hated this class.
I've always liked English, but this guy was really unorganized and graded really hard. He gave you essay prompts to purposely confuse you and expected you to critically analyze it over the weekend then write an essay that is due by Monday. Don't take his class unless you want your GPA to suffer.
very tough coz he wants u 2 learn! lectures r easy 2 understnd altho if u read d txt, u can skip d lecture. quizzes r easy. d only hard thing r d essays. enroll on his class only if ure a PRO in writin an essay. u wont get an A here. never plagiarize ;) i liked his class but im dumb n writin essays.
I took the class over the summer. The books were really interesting, and the quizzes are extremely easy. But the ease ends right there. Mr. Harper is not helpful at all. He assigns assignments and sets you up with a group. Your fellow group members will be just as confused as you are, because his prompts are difficult and he doen't explain things w
I took this teacher in spring 06 and he's friendly and nice,HOWEVER he grades very strictly . I ended up getting a C in the class and i worked my a*& off on every friggin paper. ..Do not recommend him unless you dont mind getting a C.
this guy is a loser. so slow on returning papers you never know what your grade is. besides being a terrible professor he always seemed depressed. made me hate going to class. waste of my time. gives group work to keep us busy while he chills in his office. obviously one of those i'm-tenured-and-i-don't-give-a-crap people.
Mr. Harper is horrible. I worked very hard in the class, I had perfect attendence, and I got A's on my essays, but he ended up giving me a B in the class.
GOSH, WHERE DO I START!!HE RETURNS PAPERS SOOOO LATE!!!HE IS ALWAYS WALKING IN & OUT OF CLASS,AS IF HE HAS BATHROOM ISSUES.KEEPS YOU IN GROUPS MOST OF THE CLASS TIME.HE IS NOT VERY HELPFUL AT ALL!!HE IS NOT SO BRIGHT!!HE SHOULD RETIRE!!HE SEEMS DEPRESEED & HE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO TEACH AT ALL!!!DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!U WILL REGRET YOU EVER DID!
not at all an easy A. He says to write exactly what he tells you, but you still have to extrapolate. no style points; requires you to write the way he wants you to write, but you don't learn this until you get a low grade on your first essay, returned half way through the semester. but once you get used to the style its not too bad.
this s.o.b is a complete moron. i am an excellent student and could not buy a bone with this guy. i wrote great essays and he gave me bad grades. i did exactly what he told me to, to fix what he said was wrong and i still got a bad grade. other students in the class felt the same way. i hope no one has to go through the mistake of taking his clas
I had harper for 1A and 1C I loved the class;he made english interesting for me and my writing has improved. Most people think that 5 books a semester(not even 150 pgs in length); along with short essays is hard! i don't think so;yeah he grades tough on essay, but it's for OUR benefit;I am glad that he challenges us and lets us voice our opinnion.
Worst professor i have EVER had. Didn't show up to class almost half of the time, and when he actually did teach, it was practically nonsense. He has a very bleak view of the world.
I think that people who take harper need to 1)need to be easy going and not uptight 2)expect imperfections cuz he's human 3) needs to start thinking at college level. i think that people expect free rides and that's why i loved the class. he doesn't give it to you;he challengs you and hey i'm happy with my grades; over acheivers stay away! Not for u
Mr. Harper made me have an epiphany. I had no idea what logical thinking was. His class was hard as hell at first but when i finally got it, it was a cake walk. Got an A+. His class is not about creative writing, its all about ideals and abstracts. There is only one right answer. Kinda like math. If you're not a ponderer dont take him, you'll fail.
I qualified for English 1A the summer before my junior year in high school and took him then - big mistake. He's a difficult grader and I remember our class dwindled to about a dozen or less survivors. I got a C in his class but a 4 on English AP exam in high school 1 year later - go figure. Take him if you are confident in your writing abilities.
Completely useless. Walks out every 15minutes for coffee, demeaning, ends class ridiculously early, no room for personal intellectual thought. His way or the high way. Grades ridiculously illogical and unfair, this man should be fired. I strongly do not recommend anyone taking him, unless you are confident in your writing and are prepared to ge
Really lazy, comes to class late often. There are days where he doesn't even show up. His essay assignments are extremely unclear and he doesn't do a good job of clarifying what he wants out of the essay specifically.
Professor Harper is great a teacher. His class is just little harder than other class. I think most student misunderstand his class. He is very helpful guy and he always there for me when I needed him. I think, he just hates those lazy people whoever pretended to be a good student without doing anything in his class. Because he is very tough, so yo
Completely enjoyable class. He is very funny. If you don't understand, ask because he is very helpful.
He has a great sense of humor, so it makes the class fun. THE KEY TO A GOOD GRADE: Follow his handout completely, DO NOT PARAPHRASE, stick to your "solid" thesis, use transitional words at the beginning of each paragraph, and punctuate correctly. VERY IMPORTANT: at the end of each body paragraph, write a sentence that connects back to your thesis!
He was nice but he was always late to class and he never really had a game plan. we watched a lot of pointless movies and we always got out of class an hour early. I consistently got B's on every essay (and one of the essays I did at 5 in the morning half asleep) Then I felt like I wrote the best essay of my life on the final and still got a B.
1st of all, If you truly want to learn dont take his class! If you just wanna get the class over with: take his class. He teaches nothing at all. Gives us like 3 questions to answer on our own and then we "Go Away". He walks out of class every 5 minutes to do who knows. Dismisses class early. Gives everyone a 'C' on essays when he didnt even teach!
amazing!!!!!!
His entire class is about "American Crisis", which is quite a vague subject to begin with. His topics are beyond boredom, and are completely uninteresting, and therefore, painful to elaborate on. He calls the class, "American Crisis", however, it lacks any crisis at all, no encouraging opinionation of the subject other than it's a pathetic class.
Worst teacher by far that I've had. He skipped 6-7 classes the one semester I took him and gave no warning he wasn't going to show. He lacks interest in what he teaches and expects you to be enthusiastic and interested. The class was pointless and I do not recommend him as a teacher whatsoever.
Ends his classes really early and you do not learn anything
This professor is not easy. it is hard to get an a on the essays but he does try and help you if you need help. he is not that hard either. ends class fast because he gives the information needed to start your essay.
He is an awesome teacher. He is fun and teaches what he has to teach.
In all honestly, I learned more from this instructor than I have from other English instructors at Mt SAC. He explained exactly what a paper should look like. Be prepared to do work otherwise don't bother going to college because it's going to become more challenging as you progress. The class was not difficult you just have to pay attention.
he is a great professor. his class actually made me feel like im in college and i learn things in his class that will benefit me as wrtier and through out my education. be prepared to put in work but well worth it!!!
He is a nice guy but he hardly showed up to class. He assigned essays and work but never collected it when he said he would and im not sure if that work was ever reviewed. I dont feel like I learned a lot from his class. If you take his class make sure it is the last class of the day because he cancels class A LOT!!!!!
Hes not exactly the best english teacher ive ever had especailly since he would cancel class alot! he would take about a month to give us back our essays and our homework and classwork would never be collected. It is diffucult to get an A or B on his essays.
He is an okay teacher. He doesn't teach much, but what he wants on his essays are pretty straight forward. He doesn't explain material thoroughly, but he's funny.
This class is easy if you put your effort into it. He is available to review your papers prior to turning them in. He is helpful and flexible with assignments if you need more time.He really prepares you to be ahead in your next class. Harper is a mastermind, and explains to the class to reach deeper in thought for your papers.
By far the most unhelpful class I've taken at Mt. SAC. I did not learn anything and he did not teach anything. He canceled class a lot which sounds nice in theory but then when you get back failing papers you realize maybe there should be more class. Even when he was in class he would leave every 5 minutes for 30 mins at a time. Do not take him!
He doesn't teach at all, I don't think he has a lesson plan at all he just makes things up to do in class at the last minute. He may have a since of humor, but it's only a cover up because he doesn't know what he's doing. I'm sick of teachers at mtsac wasting our money and not teaching. He cancels a lot. It's annoying
He got sick frequently, which made him miss a combined 2 weeks of class during an 8 week course. It sounds cool not having class, but then he'd rush to get essays done, which was not cool. The assigned reading is not interesting at all, it was such a weird book. I don't know if people should take his class...
The teacher was funny and the class topics changed my way of thinking. He was sick often but if you need help, he was there. Overall I enjoyed writing about topics that I never had stopped to think about. This class brought awareness to me and how we all have our own perception to what American Identity is.
I took his 8 week class which I thought would be fine, but he missed class too much and expected us to know what we needed to write about, especially with the last essay we had. Anyways, he's cool and nice, but I don't know how good of a teacher he is when it comes to attending class. So, good luck to who ever takes his class, it's easy but not.
He tells you exactly what he wants to see in each essay you write and writes it down so you can take notes. You do have to write a lot in the class, but he only cares about the final draft of your essay. Overall a good professor, he was funny, and laid back (except for tardiness). Other then that he missed class a lot but it was not that big a deal
The professor often did not attend and when he was there he rushed the class playing catch-up. Unprepared, he more than once came in telling us he didn't have time to review our work. When he did return the work to us, we rare had time to review it before the next assignment was due. I didn't learn because he didn't teach. Tuition not well spent
For missing so much class he grades pretty hard
he graded reallly hard
horrible professor, he seriously gave every single student in the class a b without even reading an essay. don't take him
Seems like a nice guy but doesn't actually teach on writing. No passion what so ever.
Just don't.
He's a really nice and funny guy, but not the best professor. He's pretty straight forward on what he wants in essays, but nonetheless grades really hard. I took the 6 week summer course and he constantly left during class. I don't expect him to be there ALL of the time, but at least for more than an hour at a time.
Doesnt teach at all. Grades essay pretty hard. leaves class constantly .
He was very interesting he has time to help you with papers and has lots of discussions of what he wants of his students. His paper is the final and he is there to help you get an A.
Horrible professor! I had this professor for an 8 week course and we was absent at least once a week. Not helpful or clear on what he wants from assignments. Just don't take this class.
Great Professor! I had him for 1A the first 8 weeks and 1C the second 8 weeks. Got a B in his 1A class and an A in his 1C class. That should just show how my writing improved after taking his class. Yes he is late/absent quite a lot but he's still a good and easy professor and he takes time to try and clarify as much as possible!
A great teacher. Pretty chill and his class go fast but just pay attention and you'll be fine. He's pretty comical and it's been a fun class.
He is an awesome professor, Very helpful and easy. I took him both for 1A and 1C. During 1A he hardly ever showed up but he is very flexible, for example our final was just a rewrite of our first essay. He doesnt make you buy text books he gives out hand outs to save you money. He is hilarious! tends to curse. I highly recommend him
You will not learn anything in this class if you take this professor. He literally writes out all the paragraphs for you and asks you to write it specifically in his way. I read this book on Buddha and had no clue what it meant. Wrote an essay for it (BS'd of course), got an B. Passed with an A. Joke class but easy A.
this professor is very specific with what he wants in his paper. He will lecture, give specific directions, and is willing to clarify things so that everyone can understand. He is not a hand holder so if you need help, ask. As long as you do everything that you are supposed to do you should be fine.
Took him for fall. I at first thought he was a tough grader, but he was pretty straight forward about what he wanted in his papers. My grades kept getting better and better through out the course, and got an A. No textbooks are needed, except a novel which you will only need to write your final paper. One more awesome thing: Take-home final!
He is very straight forward. He will tell you exactly what he wants in the essays. You won't spend more than $15 on textbooks. Final is a take home! We watched lots of movies in class, which we then wrote papers on. I highly recommend him. Oh and go see him in office hours, he will help with essays; his office is amazing!!! you have to see it...
I took Harper spring 2014 for the eight week 1A course, and later on the 1C 8 week course. now let me say, I busted my ass writing those essays. i never received an A. he is such a hard grader. highest i received was a B on an essay. even though he is a hard grader, you will develop better writing skills and know how to pass his class. Take him
This Professor is not one to be taking English with because he will miss class a lot ,but when you miss class would make you regret it and even make jokes about you not being there in the first place. As a person he is pretty cool ,but when comes to being a professor he mod as well quit it... 0 out of 10 Avoid him all cost !!!
This class is a joke. He canceled class over 6 times & is a very tough grader! He constantly writes on your papers Explain further even when there is nothing else to say. He is never in his office hours! If u have to take this class have him proofread every paper before you turn it in so he has to pass you, otherwise enjoy getting Cs and Ds!
i like his class , he has his own style and he knows what he is teaching.
He has a really good sense of humor and I really enjoy his classes. You'll have to read some but not too much. He's pretty tough about grading, but if you ask him questions and make sure you're doing everything right, you're fine. I got an A for this class, and I worked really hard for it.
Took him for english 68 and he gives off quite a funny first impression but later as I learned at 2 weeks in he is such an anal grader and to top that off im more than positive he didn't even teach the right class. I know this because its supposed to be a prep class! Instead we learned about English 1C as so he calls "The Critical Witness" .
This professor has had class cancelled more times than he's had class in session. He's a very tough grader and he always returns essays late. Whenever there would be an in class-assignment, he would never grade them, so we wouldn't know what to improve on when it comes to writing our actual essays. Wouldn't recommend taking him.
Professor Harper was a good English professor because his lectures were clear, we got to see decent pulp fiction type movies to help explain the concepts we discussed and would later write about He would help if you asked after class, but he did have a problem of showing up at his designated office hours. Harper isn't super tough but you will work
Very good teacher, and he is hilarious!! He makes jokes but can also be serious when he needs to. Explains essays well, and offers make up quizzes. He does cancel class a lot which can be a plus for most people but overall I had a great time in his class and would definitely take again!
I recommend you not take this professor. Trust I'm doing you a favor. I took him for ENG68 and he hardly showed up to class. He didn't even show up the first day. We didn't take a final or read the book because he missed so much. I went to class every single day, did every essay the way he wanted and still got a C in the class.
Took this class in the winter. Participation is not mandatory but encouraged. Harper is a funny guy and a respectful professor. Show up to class and do the work and you'll pass. He didn't make us buy a textbook but we did have to buy a paperback book, which we ended up not reading because he missed some class meetings. Overall pretty cool class.
This guy doesn't show up to his own class, and expects you to know things that he should have covered on the time that he wasted. Dude is a slouch when it comes to handing back work, and you have to work twice as hard just to get by. Don't take Harper--unless you want to be torn a new one.
If you consider yourself a good writer, take this class. If not, don't. Its not much work but he does grade essays tough.
This might've been a fluke, but I failed to turn in one of my essays and still passed the class with an A. Other than that, the dude's hilariously funny. It's also a very chill class, especially since he ended up not showing up a good number of times, making the work load a lot easier.
If you hate writing, avoid at all costs. That is all you do in this class. Fortunately, I don't mind it and prof. Harper actually makes it as simple as he possibly can. We spend the whole week preparing for an essay and by the time the weekend comes around you have everything you need to easily write the essay. You get to watch some amazing films.
Dude does not show up to class. And when he does, he's 40 minutes late. Grades the essays pretty tough. How am I supposed to do well on my essays when he doesn't even show up to class to go over what he wants? Come on.
He's a super strict grader. I've never gotten anything below a B in my entire life and he started the semester by giving me a C. Hardest class ever not because it was actually hard but because he's grading criteria made no sense. He also takes about a month to return papers.
Don't listen to what others say, most people would like it when a professor is late to class; however, usually about two or three minutes late. He gives lectures that go well into depth about the texts that you read and usually lets you out early. He is a respectful guy and as long as you show up and do the work, you wont have a hard time!
He was often late or not there and let us out really early a lot of the time. We never got all of our papers back so I didn't even know what I needed to improve on and what feedback he wrote on them wasn't very useful. His class was really chill and he's laidback but kind of too laid back to be helpful at all. he answered emails with 2 words.
If you're looking for a professor who is super laid-back and will most likely cancel class a couple of cars throughout the semester, then Harper is your guy. He takes a very long time to hand back work and his comments don't really help out much . Only take him if you're not looking to improve your writing and want an easy B or C.
The level of difficulty was like any other class. He literally tells you step by step how he wants you to write your essay. Look I am not a smart guy but I get my work done, I literally just wrote my essays they way he showed us and walked out with an A. He's a nice guy. Just do your reading and write your essays, nothing to it.
Harper is such a chill dude. We watched three movies and he explained in detail exactly how he wanted the essays written. He told us when we were having quizzes and what would be on them. I would take him again it's an easy A
Professor Harper is an amazing human being. He is unbiased and opens the minds of those who do not think beyond their thoughts. I highly recommend him. He structures his essays and does not leave you to be lost. If youre a stuck up person with high expectations of people do not take him. If thats the case, hes too cool for you.
Took him for winter. Had an essay due every week but he literally helps you write it in class. Super easy and fun.
Harper is a funny professor and is open to ideas in the essays we write! If you take this professor make SURE it is your last class of the day, he cancels from time to time. We had one book which was very cheap. He also helps us with the writing process of the essays, he goes over it in detail! Dismisses class early, essays prompt is EASY
He is alright he is not that hard the class is pretty chill but it is a critical thinking class so u have to write in class the final is to take home its an essay so no big deal and another essay that u have to send through email he does grade hard but its not that bad
Professor Harper is such an amazing professor, class is never boring he always has an interesting topic and he bases essays off movies and book we watch and read in class, he is actually super easy to get along with and is pretty funny! I would 100% recommend him and there's no homework!!!
The class was underwhelming. He missed quiet a few classes. You go in he tells you about the assignment and sends you on your way. I wish he had a strong structure class because the subject he was presenting is very interesting. If you can do the work with little to no guidance then this is the class for you.
Harper is cool the essay prompts are easy He explains how he wants us to write the essays he literally goes over every texts and even gives a handout on how to write the intro, body paragraphs and conclusion. If you have a difficult time with the class its either cause youre missing on the days he explains everything or youre not paying attention
Harper is funny His essays are fairly okay. If youre there on the days he explains the texts and the essay itself youre fine. Make sure its your last class of the day cause he cancels at times. So check your emails Final is easy as heck if you did the position paper. The book is cheap. and all the prompts usually relate to one another. take him
I failed my first ENG1C but Harper made it so easy for me. He explains everything clearly. He tells you exactly what he wants. You write all your essays in class so when you write your rough draft, you just put all your class work together. Hes super funny, it makes the class comfortable. Its impossible to get anything lower than a B.
Canceled class a lot, to the point where he had to drop an essay. When we did have class, it was a lot of fun. He's very good at getting off topic and telling stories. You will write A LOT of papers and essays in class and outside of class, be prepared.
Has a great sense of humor and is pretty laid back. Hes very straightforward with what he wants, and if you follow his guidelines closely youll do well on the essays. There are pop quizzes, but theyre easy if you pay attention to the material. He wants students to pass, so as long as you show up and do your work its a fairly easy to do well
Professor Harper makes English enjoyable for those who despise it. He is very straightforward with what he wants and wants you to pass. Only way to fail if you put no effort and dont go to class. Great professor overall with a great sense of humor.
best english teacher ever really wants you to pass offers a lot of help best teacher ive ever had
Best English professor. He offers a lot of help and is always accessible outside of class. He gives good feedback and shows you how to put an essay together. Just follow his guideline. He has a great sense of humor. He truly makes English enjoyable. There should be more professors like him. Take him you won't regret!
Average class. He is funny and defiantly likes to talk. You will only need to write 3 or 4 essays and rarely any quizzes. The quizzes are super simple and no effort, like bringing the required materials to class. Take this class if you want it to be straightforward and done with. Overall, it was doable and sometimes enjoyable :)
He often misses classes and make no sense of grade policy. He also has no any structure of class, If you can do the work with little to no guidance then this is the class for you.
He is honestly one of the best professors I have ever had. He is very inspirational and will often make you challenge your own views in the paper you have to write. He is a pretty easy grader and it accommodating to your needs :) It is an easy class if you show up and just pay a little attention.
Professor Harper is a great professor. He was very helpful during this crazy Pandemic semester. He went above and beyond to help us. You won't regret taking him. He's awesome and does not give too much work like other professors!
I took in fall, Was usually late or cancelled class "due to traffic or no given explanation" most of the time. If you want an easy A take him, if you don't want to waste your time take another professor. Several papers to write during the semester, one book to read, group discussions, watched movies, Avg lectures, funny, weekly quizzes but stopped
I took Professor Harpers online class in the summer. All we did was write essays and 1 quiz that was basically an informal essay. He is really unorganized, but he gives less work than other professors. Professor Harper is definitely picky about essays and cares about critical thinking. His feedback was pretty vague as well. Overall, not an easy A.
Professor Harper's class was do-able. His summer class were consist of essays. I got lucky because Harper thought class was an extra week long. Therefore, he had to cut assignments down and graded our essays easier. There is a lot of analysis required in order to receive an A. His feedback were vague and not understandable, but I just ignored itLOL
Professor Harper is great. If English is your lifes passion, you probably wont be satisfied but its GE class at a JC so it gets the job done. Best part hes very understanding, helpful and doesnt overload you with homework like some other instructors Ive taken, that take themselves and the class way too seriously.
This class was very manageable during a pandemic! Professor Harper did a great job! Cares about his students and is not a tough grader. Do a couple of essays put effort in them and you'll get an A or A+ We need more professors like him! Not so tough on the students because we're all going through difficult times and are trying our best!
Not a lot of guidance. Professor was basically absent the first few weeks of the semester. Took so long to grade the first assignment that the drop deadline passed without anyone in the class knowing their grade. No real ongoing discussion groups to collaborate with other students. Topic for essays was American Identity and was extremely boring.
He was absent for the first few weeks of the semester but it definitely gave you time to do the readings. Hes feedback on the essays were not helpful, suggest to reach out. From Quizzes to discussion board they were to prepare you for the upcoming essays, try to not miss most of it because it adds up on your grade. Very understanding professor.
Great professor! take his class not a hard grader! totally recommend!
Assigned about 5 essays, 3 quizzes, and a feedback-based final exam. Easy class, especially if writing isnt your thing. However, grading criteria unclear, doesnt provide good feedback and very backed up in terms of grading, posting assignments and announcements. Sort of disorganized but not too bad of a class.
Professor Harper is a caring professor who cares about his classes. Class was not mandatory although showing up will help you write your essays. Essays and final were easy, nothing over 5 pages. Harper was willing to move due dates for students who needed extra time. Im not good at english and passed with Harper. Would recommend!!
Professor Harper's class was really easy. There was not a lot of homework or assignments, and only about 3 essays. He's pretty funny and extremely caring and considerate. Only thing is that he's a little disorganized and not very clear about his grading criteria or what he's looking for when grading.
I would recommend to take this class if you aren't an English major. Didn't really learn much and barely had any class. He would be absent half of the time and most of the time without an excuse or would give classes that were like 10 min long. Very disorganized and late on grading.
He would always cancel class and even when we did have it, it was only like 15 minutes. He had vague essay requirements and super late grading. Didn't get results for essay 1 until after I turned in essay 2. Easy if you can put together a simple paper and make up random meaningful points about a story but he kinda sucks if you care about eng.
Clear instructions on what he wants you to write and understand.
Cool professor and very kind but wasn't very present.. I felt like I didn't learn much but prob because the class was online. Would recommend if you just want an easy class. Beware tho, his grading is very late.
His work is very straight to the point and the sources are just pdf stories which are pretty easy to understand. Only problem was he took a long time to grade anything and was pretty much absent. Highly recommend if you're looking for a class you don't want to stress about.
Easiset English class I have ever taken. It was online, but there were never any lectures or video. Readings were provided. Mostly short stories or short assertions on importance of critical thinking. Only 3 papers were assigned and he grades fairly. Also if you fall behind just email him- he was very caring and allowed late work. Grades slowly
3 essays+final (another essay), basically absent for most of the semester, feedback was vague, grades slow, moderate amount of reading Only pros are that he is open to extending due dates as requested and assigns little work. If you can take another prof, do it.
Grades too slowly, and doesn't want us to submit until after he grades them, and by the time he's done with the first essay out of the three, it is the last week. His instructions and feedback are too vague, which is hypocritical considering that he asks for us to clarify and be specific about what we argue for...
If your taking 1c to get the class requirement out the way I definitely recommend this professor, you get an assignment every week or 2 easy ones at that, and no need to buy a textbook all class readings are provided for you (short stories). Only problem is that he takes forever to grade your papers.
Easy class if you just want to fulfill a requirement. Minimal work, no textbook needed, and flexible deadlines. Could be frustrating due to slow grading and vague feedback though. I found Unstuck ai helpful for preparing essays.
I took Prof Harper's Eng 1A class over summer and it was probably the best English class I have ever taken. He was super clear with his expectations and was super helpful when he graded or if you reached out. This class was fairly easy in comparison to other writing classes I have taken and his criteria was very clear. Take this class!
He is a pretty chill professor. He is very straightforward on what he is looking for in assignments. You won't need a textbook, he gives out the papers. He also is very flexible with deadlines. There is a lot of reading material and if you actually read them, it's really easy to follow through.
I'm in my third year right now and he is by far the best professor I've had thus far. He's kind, compassionate, caring and is willing to work with you. We had some really good conversations outside of class and the class itself was a breeze, I never felt like not going to class, or that I had too much work for the class. 5/5, loved him.
I absolutely love this teacher. He is a great professor and is very fair with his grading. If I had to take this class again, I would definitely love him being my professor. -Valencia Silva
I was a last minute add on but I am so thankful I took his course. Lots of reading & typing. I took the 6 week summer course but at the end it was worth it. As long as you keep up & stay active on the discussion boards and follow the assignments you are good! Gives great constructive feedback on papers. Always available, great professor! Recommend!
Professor Harper provides clear instructions on what he expects on his assignments. His readings are a bit heavy but very doable. He is also super understanding with extensions and will provide you if needed. Take him!!
