Loves to teach! The courses subject matter is hard to understand but he translates the literature for the class so everyone can understand. Very interesting and knowledgeable.

He's a good teacher but not my favorite. I did not find these classes enhancing my English skills. The Eng 080/090 are not transferrable anyway.

I've had him for 3 classes and loved him! He is great fun, enthusiastic and very knowledgable. Very kind: assumes you are as smart as he is when you know its not true. Always uncertain of what he was looking for, I still managed A's.

This is my favorite English teacher. I will recommend him to anyone. Very helpful!

Probably one of the smartest guys I've ever met, he weaves history, literature, and the rest of life together and makes it relevant and understandable. A classic.

He is the best teacher that i have had in a long time. He really cares and enjoys teaching. He is a teacher that wants to pass his students and so he will make sure that they do. I would suggest his classes.

Pretty tough grader: refuses to give an A on the first essay no matter what (his words, not mine). Very funny and interesting to listen to, even for boring topics about Shakespeare. Good overall.

he's really cool. doesnt give any busy work like journals or in-class essays. grade is based on 4 essays, a midterm, and a final. pretty easy class.. fun discussions, easy grader. he uses his own book so we can save some $$. he talks about when he was our age a lot and he's pretty funny. recommended

great teacher. he's funny at times and keeps awake. but don't make the mistake of not doing the essays because they'll kill you. he allows you to rewrite them for a high grade. oh and best thing is you don't need to buy a book. he made his own for you to just print.

really great teacher. never a dull moment. be sure to pay attention to lectures cuz hes pretty much giving away your PAPERS! find a good topic, turn it in on time, and show up to every class. if you can do those, u'll get the A for sure

Mr. H is a good teacher, and tries really hard to keep the class interesting. You don't need to buy the book - he made his own. The four essays are quite simple, and you will have to come up with the topic yourself, which is really neat. The midterm and the final are really easy. Take his class, do the work and you will pass.

Extremely easy class. I didn't have to put in much effort. Only four essays, midterm, and final. Didn't take roll. Attendance not really necessary if you can read a book and write an essay on your own.

i really hate english but he explained exactly what he wanted and made it easy for me to write papers. the midterm and final were really easy & you dont need to buy a book because he makes a printable verison online available to you. he is awesome and i told all my friends to take him next semester. his class always made me leave in a good mood

I had Mr. H for a summer History class. It was pretty easy. Though we had to take almost weekly trips, they were fun and informative. The tests were EXTREMELY EASY. I'm talkin'- he made up a few questions and helped us while we doing it. He's a really fun guy. Laid back with a good sense of humor. Great teacher.

He gives you the freedom to write what you want, but somehow it needs to be related with the assigned readings. He is interested in the process of critical thinking and not in the Engl. style. His lectures are very philosopical, funny and interesting. I hardly recommend him !!! Also,he created a printable version of different readings.NO NEED A BOO

Hes awesome it was an easy A as long as you show up to class and do the reading its sooo easy and his test are rediculously simple.

I AM used to getting A's in English, and I got A's in all five of the classes I took with Mike Harutunian. He is a wonderful teacher, who knows his subject. He pushes students who want to be pushed, so perhaps that was the problem for the other postee.

He was very helpful.

Took him over the summer, 4 essays in 4 weeks. Easy grader. My essays were GARBAGE and I still got an A on all but one of them. Goofy, kind of a meatball. Allows you to re-write your essay if you didn't too well. Highly recommend.

Had him last semster for 101. He's incredibly knowledgable, and I don't know how someone could say he was a flake! He had us turn in all of our essays in just 4 weeks so that we could really work on revising them for the portfolio. Most of us didn't, and those who didn't never showed up! This semester is really cool since he's trying to save us

He is a very jolly funny teacher. He PROVIDES the book for the class. No homework, no work in class except talk and discuss stories. 4 essays during the semester and he practically tells you want to write. Awesome, easy, fun and made me enjoy the class. Very few teachers can do that.

Good teacher, and fun lectures! It is really cool because I was scared of this class, but he is really helpful! The awesome thing is you can rewrite an essay if you do not get a good enough grade!

HE IS A GREAT ENGLISH PROFESSOR! THE CLASS IS PRETTY MUCH LECTURE. NOT BORING LECTURE BUT VERY INTERESTING. EACH CLASS IS ONE BIG GROUP DISCUSSION. NEVER ANY CLASSWORK OR HOMEWORK. ABOUT 4-5 ESSAYS. GRADES A BIT TOUGH BUT THAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK HARDER AND IMPROVE YOUR GRADE. COOLEST THING IS THAT HE PROVIDES THE TEXTBOOK! take him 4 sure.

This teacher totaly rocks! He will change your life! The lectures are interesting, my friends and I actually wanted to go to class. We learned a lot too.

I took Professor Harutunian’s class over the summer; I highly recommend him. Professor Harutunian is a very helpful professor, and his lectured are very interesting. I got an A in his class, and English is my second language.

I thought Mr. H was the greatest. Funny, interesting as can be, and graded fairly. I enjoyed his class tremendously.

I agree with the person who said this was not a class for procrastinators. But I don't agree that the lectures were useless. I was in class almost every meeting, and everything made sense when you went to class regularly. I also got him to look at my papers, and with just a bit of his help, I got an A.

Haurtunian is one of the smartest prof. I have ever bombarded on campus.... His lectures are not only interesting but also very important to those that are mature and understand. If you are a responsible student and take advantage of getting your essays checked prior to the due date YOULL BE FINE! really take in what he says...aids every aspect!!!!

If you need your hand held in order to accomplish your assignment, do not take this class.This class is for students who are interested in getting a glimpse of what is like in the workplace. Those who work hard, think critically, and meet deadlines will be successful in this class. Prof. will guide and offer constructive criticsm.

Be responsible if you take him otherwise dont complain.Nice professor, will answer any questions.Does not count attendance, but he does remember who attends class and gives them priority at the end.Discussions are sometimes useless & does not always reply to emails. Theres no reason not to pass if you show him your progress throughout the sem.

Mr. Harutunian is an amazing teacher. He is more concerned with creating critical thinkers than he is with 'going by the book.' I seriously wonder how high his I.Q. is. Uber smart.

Very intelligent teacher. Strict within the guidelines provided in the syllabus. Class mentality is good, but often times less than good. Fairly helpful, but if you are in need of more help, it would be best to refer to a tutor.

He was an amazing teacher! Very down to earth and only taught you what you would actually need to learn to succeed in life.

He talks about random stuff that can sometimes be interesting... but can sometimes be totally boring. You have to write 4 essays about nothing but he will help if you ask. The midterm and final were ridiculously easy.

very very smart guy. really gets you to think outside the box and analyze everything in ways you didnt think posssible. always answers questions in class and is VERY helpful when you ask for help but is sometimes unclear of exactly what he wants. only 4 essays. time to write in class. not so bad considering it IS english.

Good professor, he can talk for hours. I took the 3 hour night class so it was hard to stay focused on his lectures. Not hard to get an A on his essays, just know what the topic is and really go into detail about what your point is. but he doesn't really put notes on your essay of what was good or not. But overall I wouldnt mind taking him again.

English 101 in itself is kind of a BS class as he may even say. You will have to most likely re-write or fix your essay's if you want to get an A or B. The subjects we talked about were sometimes interesting and sometimes extremely boring. Good teacher since 101 is mandatory.

Best teacher ever

Really interesting class, consists solely of discussion about society and change. However, it's hard to figure out exactly what he wants on essays and tests... But the class itself was really interesting and really makes you think. He discusses issues pretty fairly and insightfully. I am really glad I took it.

The discussions were VERY interesting! I enjoyed the class. He was very helpful in explaining the type of essays we were to write. He wants the class to participate and encourages deep thinking about the stories. You can even turn in essays ahead of time and he will tell you where you need work on it. Highly Recommend! I learned a lot & made an "A"

His English 103 class changed my life. The very first lecture was on the technological singularity and the implications it could have on our lives. This and his sci fi class were the most interesting classes I have ever taken. His class and his thoughts inspired me to apply to Stanford. Come into his class with an open mind, you'll be fine.

I have earned a B.A. degree in English and am now teaching English Language Arts at a L.A. high school. Looking back on my college years, Mr. Harutunian was, by far, my favorite teacher (and I had many!) and would encourage anyone to take ANY of his classes. If you require a lot of handholding and don't enjoy using your brain, take someone else.

Mr H. was extremely interesting. The only work that is do is the four papers. In class, all you do is discuss readings. Highly recommend!

A real lightningrod of a mind. A very thoughtful man, with the rare ability to take any topic and approach it from a multitude of directions. Incredibly kind, funny, and intelligent. Somewhat disorganized with the class, but aware of it and makes up for it by being a brilliant explainer and fairly liberal grader. If you're self motivated, TAKE HIM!

Greatest language teacher I ever had so far, he makes the class so funny, yes he is a little unorganized, BUT he makes it up, cause its just so funny :) You learn a lot through his very enjoyable classes :) Take him... Took him over Winter session, awesome 101 class, won't forget this guy, he even looks like a really cool neighbor dude..

Such an easy teacher especially if you are taking his winter intersession. 4 essays that's it? He's very helpful so don't be afraid to ask!

The only English professor who has actually taught the subject. He is witty and intelligent. All papers are gone over on a one-on-one basis--he is kind and encouraging. Look to him for betterment in the subject. I will look for him for all future English classes. No textbook was used.

Professor Harutunian Is a great, lighthearted, and interesting teacher. Took Winter Eng. 101. 4 Essays Total Work Due. I really learned to advance my writing skills to the next level in this class. Professor Harutunian is also very helpful and friendly so don't be afraid to speak up in class discussions. Good Luck all!

this professor is really helpful. He makes sure that all essays turned in are A worthy and keeps giving you chances to get it right. His goal is that every student knows how to write a proper essay. I really enjoyed learning from him, and he really helped me understand the requirements for a great essay.

Very nice teacher! His class was almost entirely discussion, which I really liked. He is very kind and enthusiastic. If you enjoy literature and discussing literature you would enjoy his class. He takes a lot of the themes and morals from works and analyzes our society in light of those themes. One of the most enjoyable classes I've had at COC.

Love him! Lectures pretty much the entire class. For 102, he shows movies and you critique ads and poems. He jokes a lot during class, super fun and funny! Recommended if you want an easy class! 4 essays and a midterm = easy!

Tremendous Professor. Thought provoking. Does not place a unforgiving demand on technical side of writing(i.e., comma placement, tone, etc....) Really seems to focus on and reward the overall logic of the argument or stated position. If possible I will take him again. Other classmates have said the same.

Coming from an ESL class and going to a regular class was very scary. Mr. Hurutunian made me feel confident and I got all the help I needed and got an A in his class.

Very good teacher. He is rather lenient when it comes to turning in class work. You must write essays, but they can be on basically whatever you want. I highly recommend him!

Phenomenal teacher! I loved him! He does not assign much work, but when he does, he lets you write about whatever you want. He was really interesting and funny. You do not have to really show up or pay much attention and you will still receive a good grade. I 100% recommend!!

This is the professor who truly cares about the interests of his students to be specific IN YOUR FUTURE. He made me think about my own future not once but so many times. He helped me to have directions in life. This guy is big don't get intimidated but has a very huge heart. Take advantage when he gives back your paper. REWRITE IT. He's the best.

JUST AMAZING

I've had professor Harutunian several times. Having well over a hundred credits at COC and having attended two universities I can say Harutunian is perhaps one of the best professors I've ever had. He epitomizes what a good professor should be -- one who will challenge and guide his students to think for themselves.

He is extremely down to earth and willing to help.. I recommend his english 101 class. Love him!

Great Professor! Took his English 101 class during Fall 2016. Had quite a few mornings/weeks where I was unable to attend his class but overall just followed everything that was on Canvas. Decent grader, your grade may seem harsh at first but it's because he knows you can do better than that.

I can honestly say this class taught me exactly how to write a perfect essay. He had a great checkoff list that pretty much would allow you to write a well structured essay! Also one oral presentation that was very interesting! I gave him that chili pepper because he said hopefully someone would put it haha

Mike is honestly the most caring teacher I have ever met in my life. He forces you to think different, out the box! The class straight forward, you are only graded on essays that you turn in on canvas. Which are actually not long ,can be done within a pretty short time. He is so real and treats you like he would a colleague.

He's a really good teacher. He's welcoming to all students' ideas and class was never boring. Just work hard on your essays, put thought into them, and you should be fine.

Love this proffesor. He is filled with knowledge on plenty of different topics. He is an amazing teacher and the class is perfect for 101. This is because the papers are meant for building. He will give you one paper then ask to revise the same paper as another grade. Also gives easy extra credit.

Mike is an amazing professor. his teaching style may not be the same as most other professors, he still sets clear expectations for how he wants things done. His lectures usually go off on some kind of history lesson, but eventually come back to the topic at hand. My only knock on him would be his grading. Took him over 2 months to grade papers

Just finished this class with a B+ and this is it in a nut shell: Interesting lectures that are genuinely helpful for essays. Four essays that make up the entirety of your grade. Acts like he doesnt notice people who skip class, but then calls them out on it when theyre absent so.. show up. Pretty easy grade if you just pay attention.

Great professor. His lectures usually had to do with the essays that he assigned. The only thing I would say is that I found out my grade very late into the semester and he doesn't really respond to emails. Definitely ask him for something in person. His lectures were engaging but at times, repetitive. He also lets you work in groups for essays!!!

He gave students the freedom to express their thoughts, feelings without judgement. He was open to arguments made by the class. Challenged us to be self thinkers. Extremely professional, funny, down to earth and relatable.

His lectures can be boring sometimes, but most of them are interesting topics that are very relatable. He gives really good feedback, and not at all rude. I'm running outta space, but most importantly > He does not give busy homework. Easy quiz, one essay (rough draft), then another essay (final draft) next week (Sunday). one word, Easy.

Professor makes himself readily available. Class is structured for success. This class only had four papers, each with an average of 4 weeks to complete. Feedback and annotation were abundant and welcomed. Professor challenges one to delve deeper into subjects to support thesis which is important in a college level course. Would recommend to all.

This class is not an easy A but honestly really worth taking if you want to improve your writing. The readings for each week were extremely interesting and Harutunian pushes students to think about things from different perspectives. Highly recommend talking to him during office hours to figure out how you can make your essays stronger!

Although Professor Harutunian is a tough grader and has a very specific grading rubric, he allows ample time to write essays that aren't unbelievably long. If you need extra credit he will add a new assignment to help bring up your grade. His lectures were very in-depth and explored the world through a new lens. He has a unique way of teaching.

I can neither confirm nor deny the sleeping allegations... but let's just say I got an A. Very accessible outside class if you know what I mean 😏

He is very straight forward and helpful . You will get better grades once you realize what he is asking for in each assignment. If he sees that you are actively trying he takes note of that and will assist you with all your problems. What you put in is what you will get out in his class.

He's a good teacher and helps you think more broadly. He gives helpful feedback and sincerely wishes you success
