don't let the dirt easy midterm fool you the final's a lot harder
Midterm was very misleading...Final is very very difficult!
Interesting material, well-travelled, knowledgeable.Extremely difficult MT/final
NICE, APPROACHABLE, WELL PREPARED PROF. LEARNED A LOT FROM HIM. TRICKY MIDTERM, FAIR FINAL

manm this guy is the crappiest lecturer i've ever had.. terrible note hes says abunch of stuff and writes down a friggin line...he presents us a slide show and were gonna be tested on that..lol what a joke
Very few notes, but not much to learn. Do what he says and suppliment his notes with text readings and this class is an easy A.
Love his voice, hate his notes. Know his stuff well but goes off topic/outline at times, so hard to follow. Very cool slide shows. But i skipped most of his lectures because the book was more organized.
Midterm is an easy A if you know the main concepts, but final is more difficult. Good lecturer, although his notes are difficult to follow without reading the text. Very helpful in office hours.
he told us the outline of final exam (points to focus on), but most of the questions were outside the outline.

lecture notes are a bit messy, but he always tries to make the course interesting. don't underestimate the final exam- although fair, it is nothing as easy as the midterm

his midterm n final exam is SOOOO hard!! omg!! i barely passed!! although he says dat u dun need to read da text...u better or u r gonna b in deep dodo!! he's quite nice n funny~~ i like his barnicle joke fact~~haha
midterm is easy, final is hard as hell(hints at what's on it though). he is v.specific, so don't miss a single lecture (i never used my txtbk). lots of slideshows and videos (barely any are tested on)
a great/ fun person, (ok i fell in love with him) but his notes are way too vague. DO NOT even think about missing a single lecture if u want to do well. midterm was ok but the final was ridiculously hard.
This man looks EXACTLY like Russell Crowe. His lectures are all done using very simple terminology, and you find yourself amused by -in his own words- his "wierd sense of humour". However, easy midterm does not equal easy final: BEWARE THE FINAL
Not bad, not bad at all. Can be a bit unclear when lecturing and his notes tend to be slightly vague. However, he is quite approachable otherwise and he tries his best to help and be friendly with his students.
I you like structure, you probably won't like him. Lectures are dull. I had Celeste Leander for Biol 111 and she is awesome. Choose her over Hawkes if you can.
He needs to either upgrade his style to incorporate technology as well as newer editions of the text, produce notes that are not so vague. Doesn't seem to care if everyone talks through the lecture which can be annoying if you want to pay attention.
Final was today. I have never seen a final that hard be4. Whatever i studied applies to 30% of the test only, so frustrated. His guideline to the final was broad. the only way to do good is to study every single aspect of what he talks about. Believe it!
Mt was easy, the final was way too hard. The bad thing is his notes are so vague, you have a lot of reading to do in the textbook to cover his topics. The worst thing was there were no practice finals, problem sets etc to help you. You have no idea how his questions r gonna be like, hence screwed..
I agree with the last two posts. I wrote the final yesterday and it made me feel retarded. Yet the mid-term was a breeze. Overall, he was way too vague. He seems to be wrapped up in himself and puts minimum effort into teaching. He's been teaching the course for years so don't expect improvement.
Interesting lecturer. The final was a lot more difficult than the midterm. You don't need to do a lot of extra reading of the text but you have to attend lectures because that's where all the exam material is taken from.
FINAL KILLED!! They actually posted the marks last night and I had a 64%(MT-85%) thank god they removed it just this today(to edit?) otherwise I would have committed suicide! That was the hrdst exm Ive evr writn in my life. ovrall good prf, helpful outof class and very patient. but KILLER FINAL!!
Midterm: 80%, Final under 57% but passed... and i studied..
Easy midterm, 90% and barely studied. I made stupid mistakes or else I'd easily have gotten 100%. Final killed me, overall mark was 76%. Did quite a bit of studying for the final too.
His lectures: boring. His mt: all from lecture material. His final: way too synthesized. He is a friendly guy but you can tell he'd rather do research.
Not bad professor, I almost got an A+. MT tests you on how careless you can be, any careful person can get perfect with basic biology background. Final tests you on how smart you are, no need to study or any testbook reading. Just figure out what is asked and recalled what he said in lectures.WOOT
got 96% on the midterm with minimal studying, yet got overall of only 84%. The fianl is BRUTAL and you basically have to memorize the text whilst relating everything you memorized in paragraph answers. however, you can put jokes into your exam which could raise your mark up!
Yikes. He asks obscure open-ended questions while expecting clear, concise answers. I think he's been reading too many detective novels.
Phytogeography was a topic I was keenly interested in before I took this class. While there is nothing difficult about the information in the course material, it's hard to know what he wants in his exams. He says he wants synthesis, but it isn't easy reading his mind.
Have yet to take the final (I have this feeling that I won't be so pleased after tm), but he's a good lecturer, and really knows what he's talking about. Helpful in the lab, but not around as often as Dr. Berbee is. The faculty and staff of Biol 209 are excellent - a very good course!
It was interesting to me before I took it.
He is an excellent lecturer. He is so fair. Likes red algea!. so helpful and willing to answer questions. Final was soooooo easy, if it wasn't because of his portion of the exam, I would fail the final.
Poor Mike, he's a good lecturer but Berbie is just a tad better than him. He's portion of final is straight from notes, no need to sweat when he's your prof
Very helpful, caring prof. If you attend all the classes, midterm and final exams are very easy.
Phytogeography was a drag. Hawkes has been reading too many detective novels--his exam questions are weird and obscure. Be sure to ask for clarification b/c he's expecting clear answers despite asking open-ended questions
Great prof b/c he's not there to trick you.
This guy is all talk, literally. He talks and talks and talks and writes mb 1 page of notes at the most? you hav eto really listen to do well on MT and final. But final questions were really directly from what he said in the lectures. he doesnt lie: he doesnt try to screw you over but rather helps you get a good mark.
bad notes and cancels class because he's lazy!!!!
Tricky prof, gives no practice MTs/finals whatsoever. He's a big fan of giving extra assigned readings, and he tests on them (at least for this final) A LOT!!!
all you do is take notes and then have to commit them to memory for the midterm and final, if you're good at that you'll do awsome, if not stay away, a bonus is that he sometimes cancells class and gives you a reading assignment, careful though cause that material will be on your tests
Terrible prof who's a big talking head. Gave lots of very detailed questions on extra readings, unfair. Dry jokes everywhere...
The material is not very exciting, your standard bio class. His jokes are so lame they make you laugh. He's a nice guy, midterm was easy but didn't prepare you at all for the final. Night and day difference between MT and final, all styles were completely different and is worth far more than the MT.
So hard!
Excellent instructor. He teaches you everything you need to know for the midterm/final during lectures. He tells you exactly what will be on the test. He doesn't try to trick you. I took courses just because they had him as an instructor because I liked him so much!
GO TO CLASS! All the material on exams is straight out of his notes. You will not be prepared unless you go to class. That being said, the material is fairly easy, and he is pretty funny at 8 am. Studying for the exams was a breeze because it was only on his notes and extra readings. Final exam is definitely harder than the mid-terms.

Decent prof. Although he specializes in Botany, he actually spent a lot of effort into biol 121. He made you read current events on related topics taught in bio 121, keep you updated of the current issues. Definitely copy / record his lectures, since his notes are brief sometimes. bring a laptop if you have that'll be the best choice
Good Prof. Nice Lectures! interesting and fun! Love the virtual field trips he made. Have to study his reading assignments!!A lot of the exam questions on based on those. Midterms fair~~ Finals a bit harder... (mainly based on assignment readings) But, he was nice and good notes giver!!=)
In order to do well in his class you MUST attend every single lecture and listen carefully and write down everything he says. Also, you MUST do the reading assignments because there are many questions on midterms and final based on those readings. At 8am in the morning, it is extremely difficult to stay awake in his class. He's really nice though.
Very good prof, give extremely detailed notes that are not overwhelming in terms of length. would definately take his class again if possible.
although he speaks in a monotonous style - if you really listen to what he has to say about the subject, it'll be helpful when u read over the chapters. PLEASE READ THE TEXTBOOK - he's the type of professor that 'helps you along' but will not cover 100% of the material in the lecture. he even says so himself. his midterms are easy and manageable.
although he talks in a monotonous style, if you listen to what he has to say about the subject, it'll help alot when u read the textbook. PLEASE READ THE TEXTBOOK - he's the type of professor that 'helps guide you' but will not cover 100% of the material in lecture. he says so himself. his midterms are manageable.
I actually really enjoyed this class. He really knows how to teach this course - very experienced, very fair. His slideshows were AWESOME. In general, it's easy to get a good mark.
He was a great prof. Very interesting and fun. He reminded me of someone's cool uncle. Class was easy and enjoyable, and all the tests are based on lectures and readings. I even enjoyed it at 8 am!
Great Prof, really cool and really interested in what he is teaching he was by far my favourite first year prof. Make sure you go to class and copy the lecture notes, tests are straight from his notes and assigned readings and are quite fair. His final was mostly application of knowledge and examples - know your terms! Highly recommend him! =)
Much better than Dr. Bole, and tests are relatively easy if you study and apply a bit of common sense.
nice guy but really dry course... you can tell he really loves ethnobotany, and unless you have interest in it too DON'T TAKE THIS. make sure you clarify with him and the brutal TA what's expected of you for tests and assignments. come to class to take the notes but bring a crossword (or noose). don't buy the textbook.
Oh don't be fooled-he's not a nice guy. He's just a really bad prof who tried to make up for it with a veneer of niceness. He is boring and uninspiring, and lazy. Half the course are guest lecturers, and two weeks of lab time is devoted to class presentations. The TA is brutal too. Take it with Shona Ellis if you must. This guy is a waste of space.
This guy is kind of a turd. Aside from all the guest lectures, which were sort of interesting - and his lectures were interesting too - the most frequented phrase in class was "you're not going to need to know this..." This sums up the whole course, none of the tested material showed up in class or lab. Read the text and don't bother with class
good guy. too many pdf handouts. Difficult to understand exactly what the final exam will be like. Says he has confidence in the class, etc. etc. Should give previous exam example just as a guideline but i suspect he uses the same tests every year.
The class is boring/pure memorization for midterm, but after that 75% of classes are virtual field trips which are awesome. He gives you lots of hints for exams. Just wrote my final today and I found it pretty straightforward. I read some comments in here about having to do "detective work" during the final which I found was not the case.
Amazing teacher, always interesting in class and his virtual fieldtrips make you feel like what you're learning really applies in the real world. Definitely recommend him.
He's an awesome prof, definitely my favourite of first year, but don't expect him to hold your hand through this course. It's a lot of reading at home and taking extra notes to accompany his lectures. Lectures are tons of fun, they're mandatory and honestly I was excited every day to go to this class.
Take notes and pay attention in class is all you need to succeed in exams. He base exams on material covered in class, so it's important to attend 'every' class. For assigned journal readings, only need to skim through and get the general idea. Great professor.
hes a great teacher, very charismatic and his virtual field trips really helps to put everything together. but his exams are very hard! they're much harder than all the other profs, so keep that in mind when you pick his class.
Virtual field trips were awesome but exams were a little difficult. Final was all based on additional readings and guest lectures.
Has a rather monotone voice but has a calm and slow relaxing way of teaching. Notes can get messy at times because he likes to add things in the middle, making it messy, but if you don't mind that then it's okay. Remember to go to classes and take notes!
Professor Hawkes is an awesome teacher and a great guy. He really loves what he does and it shows. Avoid this class if you have a tendency of skipping as the class revolves around note taking - if you skip you will fail, the textbook is never used so learning the material on your own is out.
Fantastic professor, this is what I came to university for. All lectures were based on the current scientific papers, and exams focused on understanding both examples gone over in class, and on being able to form hypotheses based on data. I wish he taught more classes as I would take any and all he offered. Helpful, inspiring, even a sense of humor
Classes were super interesting and midterms were really easy. Final on the other hand was extremely difficult, my mark dropped about 16% because of it. Loved the Prof as a lecturer though.
TAKE ANOTHER PROF IF YOU CAN, super hard midterms and final specially if english is your second language. lecture notes are too shiityyy, you cant relay on them!!!
Really messy note. Tricky wording for exams. Low average (my class average was 62%). The TA was even more helpful than him. Avoid if you can
He's a good lecturer, but his notes are really messy. The first midterm was a joke, but he will absolutely mutilate you on the final exam. This class had the lowest class average out of all of my courses. If bio is not one of your strengths, avoid this prof or you will suffer.
Hawkes is a fair prof. Go to class and take notes. Then, FOLLOW THE OUTLINES HE GIVES OUT BEFORE MIDTERMS AND THE FINAL. Make sure you've read up on each of the outline topics in the text. Augment your lecture notes with what the text says about the topic. No page #s given, use the index. Tests based only on lecture content and the outlines.
He's a really cool guy, he really knows his stuff, and if you pay attention he slips funny stories in for you too :)
LOVE his lectures, he definitely makes class interesting. However, his lectures are not very organized. In order to do well in his class, attendance is MANDATORY. His exams are all based on the stuff he covers in class - which are not always in the textbook. In order to be successful in his class, you cannot be lazy!
Honestly one of the worst profs I had at UBC. I'm not saying he's bad for his clarity in teaching, but for his carelessness about his students. His lectures are what everyone is saying about them, Just an outline of the lecture. The course is 100% based on the midterm and final, hardest first yr bio, no scaling, go to ubc grade and check the 2012W
Honestly, the worst first year prof I had. I hated going to his class. The whole class is based on two midterms, and a killer final. He doesn't give out any practice midterms or finals. Just aweful.
Very clear about what would be on the midterm, and took care to make sure it was all covered in class.
I am very sorry if you get Hawkes for Bio121, despite his personality and relaxed attitude regarding this course, his carelessness will bite you in the ass. This course is 100% all you. If you don't go to lecture write down every dumb thing he says and study every link that thing is connected to you will fail. Easy course made hard thanks to Hawkes
Fair Prof. Requires some work on your own but if you study his outlines then you will do well.
Although Hawkes is relaxed and easy going he is possibly the laziest teacher I have ever had. The entire course was based off two midterms and the final and no practice questions or exams were provided. Most classes consisted of slideshows of his vacations which were hardly relevant and minimally useful.
Two words. TRANSFER OUT. He makes an easy class into the most confusing class.
His lecture material is way too basic for what comes on the exam and you are required to do in depth studying of everything on your own. His exams are very difficult. He is the laziest prof ever in that all your marks come from your midterms (worth 35%) and your final (worth 65%). If you study hard you will most likely do okay, but not too well.
You have to go to lecture. Writes lecture outlines on the overhead - a lot of the info he goes over and what's on the tests isn't in the text. Still the text readings are mandatory. I really enjoyed the class - there's no work except for midtermsfinals - but the whole thing is on you. He has great stories from a very full life.
