Professor Hayse is a very helpful and organized professor, a genius in the area of modern European history. But if you aren't serious about keeping up with the vast material that he aims to cover, and you don't take good notes...keep on movin'.
Best Professor that I have had at Stockton. Can answer any question- very knowledgable & professional. Exams are well-rounded- if you know the material as it is presented you will do fine.
Hayse knows his stuff. 3 courses later I still enjoy his lectures. Be ready to study & he will open doors for you. Knowledgable & personable, a great guy.
This guy knows his stuff. He is willing to help, but doesn't like slackers.
This guy is great. He really knows his stuff. He should probably be heading the History Dept., or at least be routledge's boss. (Fire her).
Brilliant man. One of the two best history professors at Stockton (Routledge the other). If you let him, he will inspire you to learn.
What to say about Hayse? He's awesome!! He is an influential professor who is always willing to expand your ideas. He has inspired me in many ways and I can't express my gratitude enough. I didn't know that a professor could be so helpful until hi
Boring lectures, unless you are REALLY into history. Makes you do presentation & papers, but very understanding of student needs - i.e. help after class, giving extensions, etc.
Very well organized teacher with more information to impart than you can keep up with. Extensive notes and doable tests, but you WILL HAVE TO STUDY, hands down, otherwise you will not get anywhere. Lots of reading as well, very good for Hist. majors.
he is a very intelligent man! He knows way more than any american needs to about german history. You MUST study for the test though!! this class also has a lot of reading and you must keep up. Lectures are somewhat dry but helpful if you really listen.
Dr. Hayse is very nice always there to help and very smart and any class with him is great.
he knows a lot about the subject, but sometimes its confusing when he explains everything. just ask, and hell clear it up. also, he gives a lot of chances for extra credit.
A very smart guy, you'll like his classes if you really like history, he can tell you almost anything about European history. He is fair and understands what being a student is like, tests are tough, but he's pretty clear about what's gonna be on there..
Professor Hayse is brilliant and such an amazing teacher. Very flexible and helpful and definitely pushes students to reach their full potential.
mild mannered, BRIGHT, understanding, enthusiastic. i enjoyed this class thoroughly
long lectures but very clear. really cares about the students and your work. very helpful. take him if you can

Easily one of my favorite teachers ever.
Great teacher.... you gotta do the papers ...no exams...one presentation...overall one of the best teachers i ever had
hard!
one of the best things about him is that he truly is enthusiastic about what he teaches n is willing 2 help u in every way. he grades papers hard. make sure u read before u come to class n be ready 2 discuss, he gets really mad when no1 reads the material or speaks up in class. enoyable, funny, friendly, take this guy if you can
Excellent professor & interesting class. he didn't bother the sleepers, had some funny Russian jokes and easily conveyed the material. stressed class participation & gave many chances to do so. his tests were short & to the point & allowed room for opinion.
ridiculous amount of material on study guides, only about 20% of which is on the actual exam. grades papers really hard. LONG BORING LECTURES. don't take him if you're not a history major. kicked us out one time because nobody raised their hand to answer a question. he's extremely smart though and knows more than anyone should about germany
his class is extremely boring and fun. He means well but he just lectures the whole class and doesnt really review for the exams. He gives you 60 words and tells you to know them only 7 will be on the exam..nice guy..but hard...
Can be a bit long winded, but does have some every interesting things to say. I took Soviet History and really enjoyed it.
Professor Hayse is the reason I added a second minor to my transcript. I took History of the Third Reich and LOVED IT!! There was a lot of lecturing but he made it interesting. He had pictures from his own personal experiences. He even had his in-laws come to speak, they were children in Germay at the time. German Citizens! Take him its worth it!
Took History of the Third Reich with him in the spring semester. I have to admit he can get off track a bit, but lectures were interesting to say the least. The amount of knowledge he has is unbelievable. Great prof!!
I teach history at the Middle School level and took Prof. Hayse's history of the Soviet Union class in fall 1996. Normally, I'd be very interested and into the class. However, I was pledging ZBT at the time and would be falling asleep in the class while he was going on and on in that monotone voice of his. I felt bad because I was interested.
I took Prof hayse for Soviet history and German history. He's very intelligent and works well with the class. If they make a movie about him, Tim Robbins will play him.
Took Hist of 3rd Reich this summer. Greatest class I ever took and really interesting. Tends to get off topic and is long winded but a lot of fun and really enjoys what he teaches.
Lectures can be a little long winded. Had him for a summer session and I don't think scaled back the class at all. Covered a great deal of subject matter in a short period of time. Extremely critical in his grading of papers. Good professor if you're a history major.
I took him for Modern Europe, which was a very interesting class. Professor Hayse is very knowledgeable and does not give a lot of work. However, his lectures always go to the very last second and he is slow at grading papers.
Had him for Honors: Inventing the Past. While he knew a lot about subject matter (history) his class was all over the place. Couldn't really explain what he mean by 'inventing the past,' handed back papers weeks later, barely any help, no point to his readings. He even opted out of evaluation. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR HONORS
Took unreasonably large amounts of time to give feedback. Poor communication with students. Did not allow students to fully explore the idea of "inventing the past" in an interesting or effective way. Did not respond positively to feedback from students but instead tried to defend his teaching(even if it was clear that his methods were ineffective)
Took an unreasonable amount of time to give feedback. Had poor communication with students. Failed to allow students to fully explore the idea of "inventing the past" in an effective or interesting manner. Did not respond positively to suggestions from students. Instead, he defended his teaching methods (even if they were ineffective).
Prof. Hayse gets a bad wrap for being a little scattered in his teaching methods. I can honestly say I'm glad I am taking him for historical methods, as he has made the entire process relaxing and put me at ease. Read the articles, and the rest is just working on your topic choice, sources and your thesis introduction/chapters. He's really nice.
I have Hayse for Methods and he's so so unorganized. We haven't gotten grades back all semester and it's the last week of classes. Don't take..
I took Hayse for Methods this fall. He's a bright guy who is actively working on his own research and he's well respected in his field. However, he seems more focused on his own research than actually teaching our class. He's not a bad guy, just very unorganized. We didn't get our papers back and the class wasn't structured at all.
He is really kind, and he truly does try to help you through Thesis as much as he can. He has a lot going on, so it can be hard to get a hold of him for help or for your grades/drafts. This course is all self-managed, and you have deadlines to meet. Otherwise you're on your own for research and writing. He makes Thesis Seminar bearable.
Hayse is a cool guy and is really knowledgeable about the Holocaust and German history. The class was sort of unorganized, but I didn't mind. He's definitely an easier grader than McDonald, but he isn't ridiculously easy either. If I wasn't graduating I'd take him again.
I have Hayse for the Advanced Seminar Power course and it's pretty lousy. He's very unorganized and hasn't handed us back and papers all semester. I have no clue how I'm doing in the class, despite the fact that it's one week from the end of the term.
Will not return papers at all. You will never known how you are doing in the class. Always unavailable. Full of himself and speaks to you like you're stupid. Will give you assignments 12 hours before they are due. Extremely unorganized. Don't bother unless you want to be stressed out.
Completely disorganized. Gives directions for papers less than 24 hours before they are due and never bothers to grade them let alone hand them back. Have not received feedback on papers all semester. Never responds to student emails. Can be very rude and condescending. Does not seem to care about students. Terrible professor.
worst. professor. ever. never gives feedback and loses papers. is very rude and seems not to care about students.
Not the most organized professor. Never hands back work so you know how you are doing or what he wants in a paper. Can be very hard to reach as he rarely responds to student emails.
Very unorganized. Class discussions are like a guessing game for the smallest specific detail he is looking for you to find. Does not seem to care what you got out of the readings or even what the author is stating, but what he thinks is important.
Avoid taking this professor if you have to, there are far better history professors at Stockton that actually care about their students.
Never handed back papers and only posed grades for them after the semester was over. You never know how you are doing in his class since he never gives feedback. I am not sure he even read our papers and he just made up our grades
Never learned anything from this professor. He is never organized as others have said. He never gives feedback or gives back student's work.
Avoid taking this professor if you can. He never gives any work back even after the semester is over. You never know how you are doing in his class or what he expects of you.
Avoid taking this professor. He is never organized, never gives papers back, lets you know papers are due less than a day before, never get grades all semester. Just a bad professor.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. Does not seem to care about students at all. He never gives back papers so you have no idea how you are doing the entire semester. Do not take classes with him if you can help it.
Fails to return papers or give students an understanding of how thy are doing in his class. Can be very rude to students and never answers emails.
Lousy professor. Never gives feedback and is hyper critical of your opinions in class discussions. Does not give guidelines for papers until less than a day before the papers are due. Constantly forgets about things clearly on the syllabus and will never give back papers.
Unorganized teaching style. It is as if he doesn't really care about his students. Never gives guidelines. Never gives grades. Never gives papers back. Never responds to student emails. Never follows the syllabus. It's like he should not even be a professor.
Terrible professor. He is never organized or seems to care at all about his class or students. Hayse never hands back papers. We received zero feedback all semester. You never know what your grade is until it is too late.
I don't think I learned anything from him about power in history. Hayse is really unorganized and can be very smug when you ask him about your papers or grade. Does not seem to care about teaching, which is supposed to be his job.
I big disappointment in class that should have been interesting. Hayse never gives papers back. If you make a mistake or do not write in a style he wants (which he never specifies) you have no way of fixing your grade. He can be very demanding and critical of students while he fails to meet the same standards.
Very unorganized. Hayse is very knowledgeable about modern Germany but this class seems like it could have been organized differently. We never received out papers back all semester. Hayse was very helpful with our individual consultations about our term papers. I would recommend an independent study with him over an actual class.
Professor not seem to care at all about this class which is kind of, you know, his job. Never bothered to grade papers all semester or answer student emails. Rarely was in his office when he said he would be. Always promised to hand things back but never did. He was kind of rude about class discussions. Regularly was late for class.
nice guy. is area of expertise is Germany and the war. he does expect a lot from his students but he isn't terrible. he is a bit unorganized and doesn't give papers back. but a simple email asking him where you stand would help. he responds to emails fairly quickly and is very understanding
Tries to cram everything in 1 class. He's disorganized when it come 2 lecturing. Feedback on assignments & returning them is close to never but judges when you submit something late. I'm a firm believer that a person should lead by example. He encourages questions & is very knowledgeable about Germany. He will look sources up for you if you need it
If you want to learn about the Third Reich, there probably isn't anything this professor doesn't know. He looks for class participation. He is very nice, and his assignments (mostly book reports) are very reasonable. The course is not difficult, and the reading assignments are interesting. You will learn a lot in this course.
Assigns tons of reading but no tests and get frustrated when no one talks about readings. WILL NOT GRADE ANYTHING! Going into the final paper you will have no idea if you are writing to his liking. Most likely will not respond to emails. last week of class he assigns presentations that are not in the syllabus and he has not discussed all semester!
This man is non existent. We had an online course this semester and he did not grade one assignments and didn't even put in the final grades for the semester when they were due. I honestly have no idea what is going on, and I don't even know what grade I am going to get. He knows a lot about Europe and it's easy but it's not that interesting.
Professor Hayse is very knowledgeable in this area of teaching. The class was really interesting, however it is necessary to read and constantly pay attention. The grade consisted of midterm, final, two book reviews, and participation.
He is a great professor and extremely knowledgeable. You will have a ton of reading to do (four books!) but will also learn a lot. You will received graded papers late, so make sure to remind him that you are waiting for feedback and he will be happy to work with you. The lectures are amazing. You will not find a more passionate history professor.
Professor Hayse is very knowledge about the Third Reich. He loves it when the class participates. Participation is key! He is not a touch grader. A few book reviews and a research paper of your choice. Also an online final exam. He does take a while to give grades and papers back but he is very passionate and will help you if you try.
Took Inventing the Past with Dr. Hayse. He is an intelligent man and is extremely knowledgeable of German and Holocaust history. Unfortunately, I would not recommend him if you are concerned about your standing in the class because he only put one grade on the whole semester- and our grade was only based off of a few grades.
Never in my four years at Stockton been so offended by the way that a professor speaks to me or classmates. During group discussion, he clearly gets off on throwing his knowledge around and putting students down. A good professor is critical and looks to help - NOT TO BELITTLE STUDENTS. If it weren't my last semester, I'd drop him. But I can't.
The most unorganized professor I've ever had at Stockton. Has no clue how to follow a syllabus and randomly changed and assigned new vague projects throughout the semester. Easily distracted and goes on unrelated tangents to the current lesson. I've never been more apathetic towards a class. Do not take him if you have any interest in learning.
Dr. Hayse is a walking book on the Third Reich, you'll never find someone as knowledgeable on the subject than him. With that said, he is the most unorganized teacher I've ever had. You will never know what's going on, and you'll have no enthusiasm to go to class. Interesting yet veryboring class. I've heard he doesn't grade hard, but not sure yet.
Honestly. This class is ridiculous. I havent received one ounce of feedback and today is the last day grades are suppose to be in. He finally graded assignments I did months ago. He waits till the very last minute and does not provide any feedback. He is so unorganized that its not even funny.
Tells us we need the books and then posts them all online. He will tell you an assignment is due and then not give you the assignment instructions or details. Tells you to participate and then if you say something he doesnt want to hear he shuts you down. Im actually sad I took this class
SO UNORGANIZED! He is part of the failing education system.
Just as everyone else has explained, Dr. Hayse is VERY knowledgeable. However, for him, this does not seem to translate to the classroom gracefully. I honestly felt like I was being set up for failure as I was not prepared for my more advanced history courses. I just felt completely lost the entire semester without guidance.
You will never receive an ounce of feedback or a single grade from this man. Taking a WW2 or holocaust class? He'll talk about WW2 and the Holocaust. Taking any other type of class? He'll talk about WW2 and the Holocaust.
he never updates grades and every class is a lecture
Despite unorganized lectures and not sticking to the syllabus, he is a funny person but he is very lecture heavy. If he says you will have a classroom discussion, prepare to talk once during the class because he will continue on and on about three million topics before someone else can speak.
Loves the sound of his own voice. Talks down to people. Totally refuses to acknowledge any sort of feedback provided.
terrible.
I took professor Hayse this year and he is VERY lecture heavy and talks a lot . He did not go by the syllabus what so ever we were supposed to have 4 map quizzes and only did 1 of the 4. I will only have 4 grads for his class attendance, #1 map quiz, the presentation and the final. I would not miss attendance because it does bring your grade down.
I had Professor Hayse last semester, I took his summer course & am registered for another one of his in the fall. He is knowledgable, passionate & understands if things pop up. It's an upper level course so he has high expectations but he has good feedback & explains any confusion. I'd take his classes 10x over. Declared a minor because of him
Professor Hayse is very knowledgeable about the topics he teaches and its clear he absolutely loves his job. He is quite lecture heavy, but provides clear powerpoints for you to take notes while he talks. Truly passionate, involved on campus and personable with students.
Hayse was an amazing professor. He truly is an expert in his field and I feel lucky to have learned from him.
His class was okay I guess. Except that the semester I had him, he basically didn't grade any assignments until the end of the semester so no one had any idea what grade they had. Otherwise it was super easy, but I don't think I actually learned much
