by far one of the best teachers. He actually makes things make sense and puts them into logical perspective. Hes funny, nice, and all around a great guy. He gives review sheets before the tests and basically tells you word for word what will be on it, if u study for the multiple choice you should def get an A. Very easy and a good guy

Heffren is the****. He looks like he'd be the most boring ****er in the world. But in truth, he's the best ****ing professor I've had. Brillant and very welcoming to discussion. If you can take his class, DO IT. He's not hard and you actually learn valuable information.

The best prof I've ever had so far! Very funny and actually makes sense of the material. Need a Soc course? Take it with Heffren. You'll learn a lot and have a good laugh. Although, I must warn you, pay attention to his stories, he tells them for a reason.

The class was great, learned a lot about politics and really encouraged me to pursue Poli Sci as a major (which was my plan before this class). Even the boring stuff was fun, although there was quite a bit of writing.

i really like him as a teacher, he has a very easy grading scale, i would highly recommond this teacher to anyone

This was a really great class. Mr. Heffren is very funny, and he uses this while he's teaching. You won't be bored in this class. Every week you have to do a one page journal and you have a midterm, final, and two papers. If you're interested in sociology, take this class.

Prof Heffren is an excellent teacher and very helpful to his students. I learned so much about politics and he made even the hard stuff easy to understand. He's funny, creative and the class itself is pretty easy. I got a B without reading any of the textbook. AWESOME professor, I highly recommend, especially to History or PoliSci majors!!

Is really informative when it comes to American politics and policy. He's an all around a really nice guy too. He grades on the easy side but don't go in there thinking you can breeze through his class. His lectures are very interesting, you can learn alot from this guy...Take him!

Probably the best professor I've had at this school. He doesn't bias your grades by his personal opinion, he's funny and open-minded. Just show up to class and he'll treat you fairly and with with respect.

Probably the best teacher i've ever had. just show up to class, listen to him talk, write down whatever he puts on the board (which isn't much), and turn in 1 page a week

Dr. Heffren is a great teacher. He is soooo fair in grading. Funny guy, loves his sociology, and really easy paper grader. (I even wonder if he read my papers!) But his tests were HARD!!! I never would have thought it, but it was true. But only 2 tests, and you can make up those points by doing the papers. Take him, he'll keep you laughing!

Dr. H was very helpful and very accommodating. I really enjoyed his class. He was very easy to understand and made the topic interesting.

He is a fun and informative teacher. He tells jokes and stories that also have to do with lessons, but they are great fun and will help you remember the information. He grades papers rather easy but his tests can be a little tricky, just study and you should be fine though. I recommend this teacher to anyone planing on taking sociology!!

Excellent class. Great movies, discussions, readings, and teaching. He has a very clear teaching style that covers material and current events. He can also be funny at times which makes the class easier.

One of the best professors at HCC!I learned so much in his class. There is a journal entry due once a week, two papers, a midterm and a final. If you look at the review sheets you will do fine on the tests. He is hilarious! He tells stories that relate to what you are learning. Take his class.. you will not regret it!

Dr. Heffren is hilarious to start. I really enjoyed this class because it was fun and he always cracked jokes and made us laugh. Also, most theories and concepts he taught us, he related to real-life situations. I recommend everyone take this class. This class is pretty easy as long as long as you attend class and do your work.

His goals are made clear from day one and as long as you follow his instructions, show up, and take a little time to study, it is an easy A. Don't try to breeze through, and participation will really help with gaining brownie points. On day one, be ready to do the "Elevator Experiment." Lots of fun!

Dr. Heffren is really a nice and funny guy. This guy knows EVERYTHING about International Relations, it's amazing and makes for an interesting class. I would without a doubt take another class with him but my major doesn't require a class from his field of work so I don't think I will be able to. You should take him he's AWESOMEEEE!!!

i love this man. he made you feel special and worth listening to. he was just an overall great human being who was also an awesome teaching. gosh. awesome discussions, awesome movies he showed. take his class it's great! i took his international relations course and absolutely loved it

He is such an amazing professor! I took sociology at another school and hated it! He made sociology come alive with great discussions and interesting lectures. His assignments are challenging but fun and worthwhile. Take his class you won't regret it!

As long as you come to class and complete ALL assignments- easy A! There are only 5 grades, so if you miss one, the highest grade you can get is a B. The only negative is he is SUPER nice and other student tend to take advantage of him, by not coming to class or making up a ton of excuses for homeworks etc, which can be distracting.

He makes a boring topic fun. He makes rude and super fun jokes all the time. Great teacher and an easy A!

Professor Heffren is a great guy and very friendly. The work is easy and straight forward. The lectures can get pretty boring so the class was rarely full.

I had him for a summer class. He is the best professor ever. I enjoyed his class and learned a lot. Extremely open minded,keeps the class fun and makes you interested in such a boring subject as poli.He keeps the class on 100 level unlike many other poli professors.

Awesome and funny. I had him for American Federal Government and got a C. His tests are a little tricky, but besides the tests, he's an awesome and great professor. I would take him again if I could.

I took him for US government and intro to US foreign policy. Both classes were amazing. government tests were not as straight forward as you'd think, but the way his class is set up its very easy to get an A, as I did in both his classes. everyone I talked to in either class got an A or a high B.Papers are completion, not accuracy. Easy GPA booster

Dr. Heffren is an amazing teacher ! His class was so much fun and he made it very interesting! He gives 2 exams 2 papers and weekly journals. So his class is very doable! I would take it if you need a great Sociology class!!!

Had Dr. Heffren for 101 and 201 and really got more than I expected in the 201 class. Work is doable and he is willing to work with you if you have questions. Highly recommend.

Two exams: Midterm and Final. One 10-12pg paper. Nine Reader Workbook Assignments (This is homework-Just about one RW due a week). Lectures are boring. Attendance is not mandatory. I failed the midterm, didn't do the 12pg paper, but completed all of the RW assignments and got a B+ on my final and passed with a high C.

Sweetest professor I have ever had. So funny and he really knows his stuff. His lectures are always interesting and enjoyable, and he really does try to make the class apply to people who are taking it for an elective. Awesome teacher, take him if you get the chance!!!!

Heffren is one of my favorite professors because he was so easy going and down to earth. He is always making you laugh. Although some of his lectures get boring at times, he always finds a way to make it interesting again. He loves discussions, which may lead him off topic but I would definitely take him again

I. Love. This. Man. I have taken three of his courses and am heartbroken there are no more left for me to take. He is such a sweetheart and truly cares about his students. He's also laid back and understanding when it comes to late work, missed classes, cell phones, etc. He's wise, knowledgeable, and very funny. Literally love him.

Ask questions! He is able to explain in lame-mans terms bit also gets side tracked easily. Understanding the homework designs as well as assignment directions is important and listening to directions are key (he doesn't put directions online at times). Midterms and finals are a bit difficult. Study, show up, take notes and you'll be fine.

All of his classes basically have the same platform so he doesn't do anything outrageous . He also teaches Sociology and Urban Sociology, which is a very fun class

I've always loved the social sciences so I had no worries when I signed up for this class, but I had no idea how enjoyable it was going to be. I always look forward to his lectures, and the workload is very small (always a plus!). Dr. Heffren is amazing and maybe the best professor at HCC.

Dr. Heffren is a really nice guy. I only took Sociology for the credit but I heard good things about him so I made sure I took it with Heffren. The only annoying thing about this class is how he grades. He grades using a GPA-like system which is really annoying and in my opinion is not really fair. Anyway, no getting around that...

Has a lot of life experience applicable to the class, and is very understanding of missed classes. Little to no work, but exams are difficult, and papers require a little more effort than the average paper. Beware of his AWFUL handwriting.

One of the nicest professors' I've had at Howard Community College. Works with you, actually talks to you like a person instead of holding a "superiority complex" above anyone. Super nice guy, engages people and always respects their opinions, works with the students.

AMAZING. I dread college but I would never want to miss his classes. He made it so chill, had very interesting lectures, funny, and made his lessons super simple. He helps everyone pass. He doesnt grade too harshly. I wish I could take him again for another class. I passed easily.

I have taken two sociology courses with Dr. Heffren. His lectures are informative and he encourages students to ask questions, make comments, and explore ideas. If an interesting topic arises in class, he let's us explore it without immediately refocusing the class onto the lecture. Papers are important. Tests are not very difficult.

Heffren is amazing! Lectures were funny and he tells a lot of interesting stories from his many years in academia and other fields. He makes everyone feel comfortable in sharing opinions too. Honestly, class just felt like friends getting together and discussing different ideas in political science. Tests were straightforward so no surprises!

Michael, is by far, my favorite professor I have ever had! He's super chill and he's hilarious. While it is pretty clear he leans to the left politically, he tries to be as unbiased/reasonable as possible when discussing ideas that he does not agree with. Make sure to engage in class discussions! I would highly recommend him!

I came in expecting the worst. Older gentleman, bespeckled, and dull tone. However, you cannot judge a book by its cover. Professors Heffren's Urban sociology lectures were fun and thought provoking. He encouraged me to go the extra mile with my assignments, and if I had any questions he'd help make terms easier for me. I'd give him 10 rating.

Professor Heffren is fantastic. He is one of the best professors at HCC, he is well regarded as you can see from the reviews. He makes education interesting & informative as it should be. I took three classes with him and do not regret it at all. Save yourself time and pick his classes before they fill up because they will fill up fast trust me.

Prof Heffren is one of the best teachers at HCC. The textbook is required, but I never read it and received an A. He pulls the important material from the chapter and puts it into a presentation which is also posted to Canvas. He loves when students are involved and participate in the lectures, hes so funny. I am taking him next sem for Soci.

As usual, Professor Heffern demonstrates why he's the best option for sociology courses here at HCC. His minorities in America course was quite informative and delightful. What made his course greater was that the class consisted of diverse students from different backgrounds that were knowledgeable in every subject we spoke of during the semester

Lectures are always great and help me understand the information. 100% recommend taking his class even if its not a required course for your major.

A very nice guy, extremely accommodating to students who might be struggling. Involves the class in lectures and willing to answer questions immediately before tests about the test material. If you're new to the fields of sociology, psychology, or politics - this is the professor to start with.

Great professor with a class fairly easy to pass, but almost impossible to get an A in. Your grade is calculated like a GPA based on 5 things, Journals, Paper 1, Paper 2, Midterm exam and Final Exam. Therefore unless you get an A on all these assignments, you will not have an A.

What else can I say besides he was great. Perhaps the best professor I've had during my time at Howard Community College. Insightful, wise, and respected are three words I'd like to use to describe him.

Wrote a one page paper after each section and took a midterm and final. His lectures are very interesting and easy to follow along. He gives a review for the Midterm and Final that is extremely helpful and also tells you what to study and what not to study.

This was one of the good professors at HCC, I like that we got to interact with one another throughout the class. He never assigned too much work, and he was good at explaining the material. He did talk too much sometimes, but it was not a big deal. There was only a couple huge assignment, and everyone had to participate at some point in time.

I had Dr. Heffren for political ideology and he did a great job of making dry material interesting (although his class was a lot of reading). He's such a nice person and very knowledgeable too. He's a fair grader and very understanding. He is pretty monotone though, so his lectures can be hard to pay attention to. Overall, he's a great professor.
