Not the best chem prof I've ever had. But definitely not the worst!
grumpy!!!
Boring, not very competent IMHO, tests ambigous sometimes, but won't kill you
His lecture sends you in a sedative state (zzzz) but at least he makes it clear
No Comments
very hard and not helpful at all
A bit distant form students.. I have reserves on his personality.
i don't know how he teaches but i sure know that he will not increase your marks
clear presentation of topics, material covered in class is on tests nice lecture

boring class,i always sleep there

The power point presentations are nicely well done. He tries to be a bit helpful. But I still can't learn anything!
Prof. was very helpful, kind and approachable. He did curve marks at the end. Lectures were presented very clearly, organized and were interesting.
Clear Lectures, generally a great prof, but needs to make lectures slightly more interesting. Tests are fair
He's really helpful when you talk to him in front of a group, but extremely rude one on one. He gives insanely hard tests and then raises everyone's mark at the end. His lectures are usually well delivered however.
he is a were quick teacher , his test alway have one question no one will get, and lecture note dont help just do the problem in the book ahead of class
I agree very rude one on one.. hes one of those ideal professors you dont wanna ask a dumb queshtion too or youll get a hell of a response(this goes for most chem profs anyways).. good prof nonetheless, u should take his class.

If u failed this course, it was your own fault. Do the work, and anyone is capable of getting a decent grade. Do not blame professors.
he is honestly a nice prof, i don't know why ppl are complaining. it's true that if you do the work, you will get a decent grade. go to upper year chem courses, and you will apprecitate how much hempstead babies the class. GREAT PROF!!!
Prof Hempstead is OK. He's very arrogant, doesn't particularly like students, and constantly tells you to study more sections than are ever on quizzes or tests.
7/10. Pretty boring lectures. If you study hard enough, you will do well. (meaning that tests are hard, but fair)Make sure to go to his help room times, as its very beneficial. One time he hinted to a question on the test worth 3 marks. (10%)
good prof. I liked his way of teaching, esp. after I saw how upper year chem profs are. He does baby the class and repeats one thingmany times if u dont get it. Take it!
GREAT prof. I had him as subsitute, and loved his way of teaching. He is sooooooo much better than Hastie. Have this guy if you can. And by the way, he is NOT rude, he is normal
He sounds like seth green while lacking any passion for the subject.
Lectures are very clear but not interesting. He lacks enthusiasm and is a bit arrogant. Not the most personable guy. His tests are hard, but very fair. If you put in the work, you should pass. Overall, if you can stay awake during class, he's a fine professor.

i dont think its an issue of doing your work. loads of student do thier work. hempstead is not motivating. check out maggie austen!
Simple a great prof .. very helpful ..approachable .. explains the material in an excellent way ... a very fair prof ... fair tests .. i recomend this course
He speaks monotonously and wimpers often. His tests were easy however, he scrutinized and picked on obvious things.
very boring while he teaches and u will definitely need a coffee in the morning. quizes are easy but the final was hard, test book is useless basically
he's boring but teaches well. Exam and quizes were fair. If you get a hold of quizes from previous years you're in luck!
The worst prof ever!
His tests are really hard, he gets things on the test that are not included in the chapters you are supposed to study. Always the first page in the test doesnt have to do anything with what he teaches us.. he sucks
awesome! if u do da work u'll b fine....i dont know why ppl r complaining about him...these ppl r probably da ones dat dont do their work....n then blame da prof when they fail.....this prof was good...im not really good in chem but still did good in his class with little effort...prof is awesome....just do da work n u'll surely get an A.
He never smiles and looks difficult. But he is a good prof. His tests are fair, but he never does bell-curve. One advice: pick up yr test papers at his office asap cos' after 2 or 3 weeks you won't be able to get them remarked (simply because he won't do that and you lose mark for nothing). Trust me his TAs mark test papers very badly and randomly.
He's perfect! In fact, he's better than perfect! Next to him, perfection is crap!
An excellent prof. provides solutions to the assigned problems from the text book. Explains very well and clearly. He makes tests from his lecture notes.so if you understand them fully, you'll ace the tests.
One of the best Professor i've had the pleasure to learn from. Hempstead is awesome. His lectures are interesting, the stories he tells once in a while are just captivating. Attend his lectures and take notes ... study from them to get a good mark.
one of the top profs at york, easy to understand and he doesnt require much from you, just that you do the work required. and its not askign alot amazing top prof!
Professor Hempstead teaches very well and he is very clear in explaining the concepts. Midterms and exam were fair, but you've got to study well.
Nice Prof! Teaches very well! However the textbook was not so great!
Fair tests, average expectations, lectures are clear and simple enough. Not a nice guy to talk to, especially if you're questioning something he said. Get a hold of past quizzes and exams rather than focusing on the textbook or lecture notes. Other professors this year made the course unnecessarily hard. Get into this guy's class, pass, and get out
GREAT PROF! one of the best I had at York! very organized and clear. write everything he says in lecture and only study lecture notes. Awesome prof!
he has the personality of a chairleg
Attend all lectures and write down ALL his notes as his tests are based on his own notes rather than the textbook. Try to get a hold of past tests besides the ones he posts. Study hard and you'll easily get an A.
He is a relaly good prof! However, you haveto attend his lectures because the tests are based on the lecture stuff more than the textbook! Pretty straight forward tests/exam if you attend class and do your h.w. Got an A! :)
He's an excellent lecturer for sure and you should never expect anything else from him. very indifferent person, unexpectedly weird questions etc.. After all, just a good TEACHER
He's very clear, and will explain concepts over and over again until you understand them! His tests are MUCH easier than pietro's. If you need an A/A+ in the course, your best shot is with Hempstead. Don't be discouraged by the first test, the second, third and exam are all easy.
Good prof who wants you to learn the material. Test are hard but what else is new in a chemistry course? There are lots of outlets to get help and he answers all of the questions in class. Enjoyable enough for a chemistry course.
My favourite york professor hands down.
He is a cold and rude person, not helpful, no sympathy. So hard to deal with, he doesn't care your feeling. I am so hurt after asking help from him.
To get an A+ in his class you need to: pay attention in class and take notes on his lecture slides. Do the questions he assigns and read relevant parts of the textbook. Go get all the quizzes and exams from previous years. He takes questions number for number from previous tests.
The most boring teacher, by far, that I've had at YorkU. Had a three hour lecture, so it was absolutely brutal. Real tip: buy the old test/exams package from the chemistry society at the beginning of the year to practice for the tests. While the old tests he puts online are useful practice, having the whole package makes a real difference!
oh boy. 3 hour chemistry lectures on tuesday nights with professor hempstead. by the end of the semester i stopped going. Worst monotone ive ever heard. The tests are more than fair, but you have to work really quickly or you will not finish. You can't listen to him even if you WANTED. but overall nice guy i guess?
i like this professor because he is very direct and straight to the point. what he teaches is what you will encounter. though there is a book he makes slides with all the necessary info. honestly you wouldnt even have to go to lectures and you could ace it. its a course thats easy to pass and also easy to fail. read and do his problem sets.
Nice Man, doesn't smile, straight face, very clear and builds the lesson step by step, you must be quick if you are taking notes...do all the questions in the book for an A+.
This guy can not teach period. He is the worst prof I have ever had. you won't get anything off of his lectures. hard tests. you are on your own.
Cold and rude. Will suggest that if you are having trouble with the subject, that chemistry is not for you. Both him and his wife are insufferable and a disgrace to York University.
Idk why so many of the students are complaining. He's really not bad. Chem 1000 is a hard course I mean, you just gotta work hard. To me, he's a good prof, and honestly his tests are so FAIR!! Love him for that.
Sure, he's pretty monotone and seems to have a bland personality during lectures, but he knows his material well. Tests are fair, but nothing is easy without practice. Really helps to do practice problems not just from the textbook but past tests as well. Have to work hard and practice ALOT, regardless of his teaching. Exam is easier than tests.
Easy course if you have a good chemistry background. but if you don't, prof hempstead won't be helpful at all. you are on your own which is the main thing I learned in university so far.
He is a nice prof. but his classes are boring especially when you have to sit through the lecture for 3 hours straight. His tests are very easy and anyone can get an A on them if they at least did their homework. The exam was brutal, some questions came from material that was not taught in class at all (but exam was made by another prof).
Honestly, i tried to avoid him last year by switching from his class because i heard people say hes very rude and he sucks. But i just had him for 2030, and hes the best CHEM prof at York. Despite what people say, his lectures are actually interesting but then again i really like chem so idk about others. Hes extremely helpful and very nice.
Such a passionate professor, and really cares if you get the material as well. Tries so hard to make sure everyone gets everything. Fantastic prof.
He is a very good teacher, easy to approach and ask questions. He will answer all your questions in a very nice way so that you understand the material. Past tests are a good option to go through.
Great Prof!
Practise from past tests and exams and you will be fine... Hempstead is an alright prof, pretty monotone most of the time and mostly reads off his slides. He is very helpful if you ask him questions and he does know his chemistry.
Don't expect much , he lectures well , clearly , although not the best of personalities , doesn't really care about you as an individual . I think he's neutral he won't really help you to get a good grade or affect you the other way to get a bad grade , so study well , do past papers and you gonna be fine !
Arguably the best Chem prof. YorkU has to offer. His tests are magnitudes much higher in difficulty in comparison to other profs. It's not even worth it, students that average +90% get a rude awakening when they drop letter grades in his class.
Honestly, its university chemistry. It isnt supposed to be easy. If you don't work, you wont get your mark. He does his part well though-he knows his stuff, he explain it well, he'll pause every now and then to make time for questions. What else should a prof be?
Reads entirely from his lecture slides. If you're good at self-teaching, lecture attendance is a waste of time. 95% of lecture slide material is in text, but there is stuff only on the slides. Study both. Tests are fair, though lots of practice (both text questions and ESPECIALLY past tests) is required to do well. Do NOT try cramming the night b4.
Hempstead was an easy prof but it was hard to stay awake in his lectures. Read the textbook and unlike me, get past tests. The final exam was easy and straight forward.
Just a basic prof. If you can study from the textbook alone, take him. Tests are fair. My only regret was attending most classes. Stay home on your tuesday night and just study from the textbook and glance through the slides. The people who hate him as a prof just dont know how to study on their own or arent studying properly.
Dr. Hempstead is an excellent professor. His tests and the exam are very fair. If you cannot achieve a half decent grade in his class, chemistry is probably not your field. His lectures were slightly monotone, but he's very approachable and if you have any questions, he is more than happy to answer them. In short, take Chem1000 with Dr. Hempstead.
CHEM 1000 is a hard course. Hempstead gives a 3-hour lecture, which makes lectures feel like they take forever. In reality, he is pretty clear, pretty helpful (in the tutorial he answers all questionsproblems), but if you can study well on your own you will be fine, provided you read the book and his slides, which may contain other stuffeqns.
Extremely fair tests. Read the book and understand all the slides. Do as many textbook questions, the extra ones given on moodle and previous tests.
very helpful explanations when going through practice questions. efficient during tutorials, will go through many questions in the allotted time. would recommend +1
Great prof. His lectures are clear, informative and interesting. Make very detailed notes during lecture and study those along with the textbook and past tests. Midterms are fair, and the final exam is more harder but do able. Make sure you study all of the material equally for the final exam. AA+ is very attainable.
You have to do many practice questions from the book to get an A in this course.
So this guy is useless. His lectures are really boring. Tutorials are useless and usually last for 5 mins, does not take up questions in tutorials. So don't bother going. If u want to pass learn his slides and read from the book. Make sure to do his pass midterms cause he repeats the questions and they are pretty easy. It's easy to get an A
worst prof ever, lectures were very long and boring. the prof doesn't give questions in the class, tutorials were useless. but to be fair his tests were the easiest, so if you're taking chem for once he is fine, but lectures wont be enjoyable.
Absolutely horrible. AVOID CLASS WITH HIM. Hell ridicule you if you have bad question. I was practising a problem and kept getting stuck before the second quiz, and eventually resorted to asking him for help. His said, "are you kidding me? a baby could do this.." he puts you down and his lectures suck, you have to read many pgs in the textbook
Very hard class, I wish I transferred to johnson (his quizzes were easier imo)
Had a question marked wrongly on the test, I bought it to his attention in office hours, but not only was he not there for the first 15 minutes of his 1 hr office hour period, he disregarded it completely...
Switched into his section expecting high grades, but got messed over
wow those tests...
This man does NOT know how to teach at all, he is disorganize and always making mistakes during lecture plus he is disrespectful, York should get rid of him!!! AVOID HIM ANYWAYS
as mentioned in the other posts the guy is a jerk and his lectures are pretty much pointless. He looks bored and like he doesnt enjoy what he is doing, propably longing for his retirement. His tests however were the easiest, if you put the work for it. No chem is easy, you still have to study. He makes the first one always harder so be prepared.
he helps you if you need help. his tests are fine. he makes funny/awkward faces whenever he picks someone to ask a question, whenever they ask a question, and whenever he finishes answering a question.
His lectures are not informative. You have to read a lot on your own. Tests are hard and expect the worst. No easy questions on tests.
Good lecturer, but that's about where the compliments end. Do yourself a favour and keep your head down in class and work hard and avoid ever having to interact with him at all costs. An A+ is very possible if you understand the concepts beyond just being able to do formulaic problems.
This prof if awful, TA's are worse. Got a mark taken off because I was off by 0.01... Asks nit-picky questions about the textbook material, and literally told me that in order to do well, I needed to memorize everything in it. AVOID!
hes so boring and his tests are so hard in order for you to get an a+ you need to read the textbook, make notes, do all the textbook questions and pray for the best honestly i wish i took pietro instead (his tests are so much more easier and hes more interesting)
STAY AWAY !! i had a 95 in grade 12 chem and i couldnt even get a 60 in this class. his tests are SOOO hard..
Dr. Hempstead is extremely clear in his expectations and it is very easy to get an A provided you study. He records his lectures so you don't have to go to class. This actually really helped because I could work in the mornings instead. His slides are concise and clear. Honestly a very easy course with a little effort. Plus he is very approachable.
He offers nothing to the lectures - he just repeats what's in the slides. Therefore, going to lecture isn't mandatory, as you can read the textbook at your own leisure. Plus the slides he posts are quite succinct. His tests are on the easier side. In the published past quizzes across all sections, his questions are the most straight forward.
Frankly speaking, half of these people want a performer and Prof 'Stead is not one at all. A bit boring, yes, repeats the slides, yes, but does he uploads the slides? you bet. Most ppl dont understand his style, more than giving new info hes guiding you along what YOU should study at home, so just go to class & u SHOULD end up with easy B+ or more.
Hempstead is not the most interesting prof in York for Chem. Pretty boring, tbh. He uploaded his lectures online so I didnt really go to class. Do the past tests and know how to do each question. Use textbook for practice problems but honestly, it doesnt even matter as long as you do past tests. Easy A. Takes 2/3 tests, so 30% each.
Not an understanding prof what's so ever. I really don't understand educators that could care less about students. Why become a professor?
He is NOT even deserve to be a prof.i do not know why York university hired him from the beginning!!!
Classes are long and boring. He uploads slides but takes a lot of the material out, so you need to use the textbook to get accurate notes if you don't go to class. He either goes really fast or really slow, so sometimes even if you go to class you need the textbook to complete notes. Tests are pretty easy if you study. Go over old tests.
The lectures can seem long at times and drag on. He uploads the powerpoints so missing class once in a while is not a big deal. The midterms are not overly hard especially if you do the textbook questions. He always answers emails if you need help. He is good at explaining the material so even though attendance is not mandatory it is beneficial.
His lectures are just okay.
Overall a good teacher. Make sure to study from the textbook, slideshows and past tests. Tests are difficult, be prepared to study. Class was not an easy A.
Does not explain the content properly
Really nice person
he's not the best professor but he's testing is really easy if you are a good self-study-er you could easily get an A. he is very nice and caring but honestly of much of a teacher.
He is overall a good professor. Despite his lectures being long and boring, he is always happy to take time to answer questions before, during, and after lectures. He is very approachable and is quite specific as to what is expected on tests. His slides are clean and summarize main points very efficiently. Would definitely recommend him.
He genuinely cares about students and helps clarify any confusion, but he is simply not meant for teaching. His lectures are pretty dull and just reads off the slides. Tests don't resemble material in lecture that closely, so make sure you read the textbook. I would say avoid, but he's the only one teaching chem 2030 for the past decade (or longer
Most boring person ever. Avoid at all cost. Even though I got a good grade the course was very dull and too much effort.
Lectures are recorded, but there are clicker questions for participation marks you'll miss if you never show up. He just reads off the slides and it's kind of boring, but the explanations are good. The course is hard. Only buy the textbook if you want the extra practice problems. I was lazy and didn't practice enough, so my mark wasn't very good.
He is pretty boring in lecture and the tests are pretty easy to mess up. The tests don't look like the lecture at all. He takes the best 2 out of 3 midterms. He is pretty chill but can be pretty dull at times. The textbook will be your best friend
He is overall a good professor his classes are not fun but if you put the effort and study both the textbook and slides you will end up with a decent grade. take notes during the sem and study HARD for the midterms. read lab manuals to know what you are doing in the lab and listen to his lecture recordings when you don't understand the textbook.
This is a professor to avoid
Lectures with this guy are nothing out of the ordinary, there are slides that are posted on moodle and lectures are recorded, but I highly recommend attending lectures and being an active participant. He tries his best to explain concepts clearly to make sure everyone in the class understands it. Just do the homework and you'll be fine.
Really good prof. I highly enjoy his classes and how he explains things and always makes sure that he is clear and that everyone understands the material. Study his lecture slides and listen to lectures again take notes from book and lectures and you will be fine. I would def take a class with him again.
Definitely my favourite prof. Very clear and answers all questions and is extremely humble and kind. Truly recommended.
the worst prof that you have ever seen in your life
I can't even say a word about him.
If you show up to class, participate and do all the assigned work. You are guaranteed a good grade. Don't expect to be spoon fed. This is Uni and you have to work for grades. Overall professor Hempstead does more than adequate job of presenting the course materials.
His voice put me to sleep in class but meh. If you can teach yourself the material (it's mainly high school review) then he's fine.
He is best at explaining all concepts. He make sure everyone understand by asking for questions after teaching some topics. He does all tutorials very well. Answers all the questions in lecture and tutorial very politely and he tries to explain as much as he can. The best professor for chemistry. If u have him dont miss to take him.
Prof Hempstead has a fairly engaging class. If you perform all the recommended work and the quizzes you will likely receive an A. For the A+ you should search up mock tests for chem 1000 depending on the midterm you want sometimes youll find similar questions there. He isnt the best when explaining and may confuse you so YouTube is a good friend.
He records lectures so at least that's good. Very hard marker, he does not give part marks even if you have the right work, his teaching skills doesn't help as well. He doesn't explain anything he literally reads off his slides, so attendance is not mandatory. Avoid him if you'd like to do well, I got an A but it was a struggle. He needs to retire
Overall he's one of the profs who is the most caring student during this difficult time so far. He keeps making office hours 3 times a week, and his test is quite fair but sometimes might be confusing. Do your practice and review the lecture slides in order to do well. He's sometimes quite boring BUT at least he cares about students.
Course is relatively easy and the prof does a good job at explaining it but the last chapter is very complicated took some time to understand. The homework was also very easy with good amount of time to complete. Prof provides good feedback to questions. I feel the course was not well structured with how many marks the midterms and final had
amazing professor!
He isnt horrible but the subject combined with how monotone his voice is put me to sleep. I couldn't watch the whole 47 min lecture at once it was painful. He reads off the slide but other than that he's good.
He is very monotone and boring, his lectures almost put me to sleep every time. He just reads off the slides so you might as well just read the slides yourself instead of watching the lectures but he is helpful in tutorials. The class was overall not too difficult as long as you complete the homework questions and study packages before midterms.
Lots of content is covered in the lectures but Dr. Hempstead has a very low and deep voice. As far as chem teachers go, I've had better, but he teaches things very clearly so I can't complain.
monotone and slow voice, weekly hw assignments(easy), and all tests in his class were consistent with the presentable material. He goes in depth if you need help with anything. He clearly knows his stuff, but the way he presented the last chapter(symmetry)was poor relative to how concise and clear he was in the previous chapters.
he puts me to sleep and attending his lectures dont help at all. i read the textbook by myself. he reads off the slides..
Hempstead explained concepts pretty well and it's clear that he understands the subject matter. However he speaks very slowly and it can be hard to focus when he lectures. The course itself wasn't too difficult but you absolutely need to put in a lot of effort. Tons of note taking, weekly quizzes and a good amount of homework problems
Professor Hempstead was decent. His lectures were a bit boring but they covered all of the material we needed to know for the exams. To be successful in the course just do the recommended practice problems.
Prof Hempstead taught pretty well but he talks very slowly and tends to drone on sometimes which can make it difficult to stay attentive. The course itself was pretty easy if you're willing to put in the work. I wouldn't fight to get a class with him but if it was the only option, I wouldn't hate it.
just reads at the slides and its a chem course like bro how
he's a very dry lecturer and its a struggle sitting through his 3 hour lectures. however, his tests are pretty fair and are basically pulled from the online eclass quizzes and the textbook. show up to class or watch the recorded lectures, read the textbook, do the assigned homework questions, ask for help, and you do great.
Prof. Hempstead is very knowledgeable and answers questions very nicely in Office Hours, he is kind. If you are fine at studying chemistry, the tests are fair. If you do the work, and do homework questions and midterm practice problems (focus on the calculation questions), you set yourself up for good results.
His tests are very similar to the textbook questions but marked veryyyy hard!! also he wouldnt teach what is actually on the test and you had to go and read the textbook so if you take chem 1001 you just have to read the textbook because what he teaches in class isnt really helpful towards the tests
Very fair examinations. As long as you do the homework, you will do well on the tests.
Good professor and extremely accessible outside class
Overall, Dr. Hempstead is a great professor! I highly appreciate that he not only records his lectures, but also writes on the slides themselves. I never had to attend a lecture in person and was able to study/make proper notes based on his lecture recordings. The lectures can get a bit monotone, but they are not hard to get through.
