Heslop has signs of someone who failed from his profession. Overcomplicates stuf
Easy class if you pay attention and take notes...but tough grader on homeworks, and difficult to understand
Don't take this guy... he sucks
Smart and nice guy. Pretty tough on grading, makes sure you know what you are talking about. Not a class to breeze through.
Easy class, bad teacher. I wouldn't advise taking him.
Hey Guys, If you are in college for not developing your intellect you're wasting your time. You are goiing to get a job if you have 'real' intelligence. He is good at developing that. Take him
He spends too much time on some facets, and doesn't hit on others. He is disorganized, with a facade he vehemently wears that demands of the student meticulousness, and his own skewed sense of logic.
the worset teacher on this planet, take him and see what happens
The worst teacher I have ever had in my life. He was disrespectful, rude, and would berate students every class. Never, ever take this teacher. My uncle is a professor at AU and he says that Heslop's tests are ridiculous and irrelevant
His multiple choice tests are all Ds'. I did not even study and just put Ds' for his mulitiple choice test and passed with a C. This guy need to take some English class. Mix up "Do" and "does" a lot of times. Do not take him because yo
Either he needs to retired or be fired by NVCC. Worst teacher
I don't know exactly the course number but it was ecomonics 1, I hated it. The test are redicoulous, they are multiple choice but confusing.
DO NOT TAKE CLASS WITH THIS GUY, all his tests are mulitple choice and are very hard and some involve caclualations that he never teaches in class, he's always complaining about how bad the students are when he's actually just a bad teacher
He is bad. Very bad. Dont' even try to pass by his class. No matter how much you study you can't get a good grade with him. His testing system is out of this world. He is a nightmare!Try him if you want to torture yourself.
You can read the other students explainations, but let me give you some stats. First test, 1/2 the class failed and no one got an A. Second, still no A's, but "only" a 1/3 failed. I stopped going at that point. If you see this prof. RUN, SAVE
VERY DOGMATIC, UNPLEASANT TEACHING STYLE - I AM AN A GRADE STUDENT AND STRUGGLED WITH MUCH PAIN TO EVEN GET A B. HE DERIVES A CERTAIN PLEASURE IN MAKING YOU SUFFER - HE NEEDS TO DO PSY 201/201. DO COURSE ONLINE IF NO OTHER CHOICES.
the worst teacher i have ever had, studied as hard as i could and still failed ...so dont even think about taking ECON with him.
I'm a hardcore A student, omfg...wth was the first thing that came into my mind. IT WAS A MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST TOO!!
I agree is is hard. Dont take him if your major is other than economics. if it is economics or something in that stream do take him. he is a challenging professor. i assure, you that u will become sharp after taking his class.
omigod. i just failed the first test ever- i have never ever have gotten an f before. he doesnt want to help, and thinks its the student's fault that we got bad grades. claims his tests are very easy. He is the worst teacher i have ever had in my life!
His tests include things you don't even learn in class. His teaching style is very unlpeasent and being in this class is a pain.
Terrible teacher. Do not take him.
can teach economics - I thought that I was unteachable in this subcject and stil got A. But the class is hard, and he is rude, and unpleasent to students...I learnt economics but I wouldn't take this class again with him. I hate his guts!
No no no terrible........... do not take his class plz.
I am reading this from students who don't even remember their class numbers!! Prof. Heslop does not teach any 111 or 311 level class. He is frankly one of the most principled profs I have met. You go to school to make your brain sharp. Do just that.
Can not understand what he is saying half the time...is very hard and does is not helpful
hes the meanest person ever, he has no respect, and he doesnt care about his students. only time he'll ever talk to you is during his office hours. youll understand what he teaches but his tests are hard. if you wanna get an A or a B, hes not the guy for you.
Honestly, although he really loves Economics, he is a terrible professor. Worst professor i've had in 3 semesters at NOVA. If you read this, i caution you, do not take him.
First of if you want an easy A go look somewhere else cause this is not the place. His tests are really hard basically because it covers things he hasn't tought in class the only entertaining thing about the class are his bob marley shirts with fat blunts on it
he has not a good system of teaching.I do not understand when he writes on the board because his writting in not clear at all.I was very interested in this class but I am very dissapointed with the teacher's system.I would like that you do something since 21 students dropped the course.Thank you
Do not take his class...his tests are very confusing and they seem like he made them 10 min before class...during all my tests he was telling us to "turn to page" whatever because he made a mistake...his tests seem like his goal is to trick you...all about respect but i saw him yell at lots of kids
thinks he is a good teacher but isnt he needs to realize teaching isnt what he should be doing. students dont like him he doesnt like students.he needs to teach so students have enough on their notes to study. i feel bad for thouse who have to take his class and cant drop out. disgrace to NVCC!
By far the worst teacher I have ever had in my three years at NVCC. I cant understand a word he says, his hand writting is so sloppy that I cant even read it, and he is down right disrespectful and mean. His tests are very hard and doesnt cover what he has taught in class. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
notes do not help on the test. barley understand what he's saying. and the only way to pass the test is to answer the questions always D,C,or B never A
Wanted to like this prof. Started okay, but mid-semester he got a bit bi-polar. (Ex: it's ok to leave for the bathroom w/o asking one day, not the next). Doesn't consider suggestions from students. Tests are all T/F, but v. v. difficult to read and understand. Is passionate, but not about teaching.
this is the WORST PROFESSOR EVER!! his tests are unnaturaly hard and most of the class dropped out. can't teach, boring as hell, is wack. sick and disturbing.
you are better off reading the book on your own. if your intention is to learn, don't take his class. if you intention is to get easy grades, don't take his class. he knows economy but he dosn't know teaching. he's always right so don't argue.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had, I have never done so poorly in a class. He won't help you with anything, and everything on the tests is from his notes, but his tests are worded to trick you. Don't take him if there is any other teacher take that class.
He sucks, he doesnt know what he is doing and he is very unclear. He tries to make his test really tricky and he ends up tricking himself.
THIS TEACHER IS THE HARDEST TEACHER IVE EVER TAKEN. HE GIVES LOTA TESTS, 2 TAKE HOME BUT STILL HARD. NOTES DONT HELP. THE DOCUMENTS HE ASK TO PRINT DONT ALSO HELP. I DUNNO WHERE HE GETS THE TESTS QUESTIONS FROM BUT THEY ARE REALLY HARD, EVENTHOUGH THEY ARE MULTIPLE CHOICE.
Test's had very ambiguous questions. I got an A but it took a LOT of studying and using the book and a little luck. I would definately not take another class with him.
This teacher was absolutely wretched. He would put multiple typos on tests. There would be no correct answers for some of the questions because he didn't put them on! Always late to class. He sucks. I am a good student and barely passed. He is undreasonable. Good luck.
Professor Heslop can be very nice, but I concur with most of the other comments here. The harder I studied for a test, the worse my grade. Once I stopped trying, my test scores went up! Huh?? Plus, I just wanted to learn a few basic concepts; instead, it's super-abstract advanced theory. Unhappy...
I got an in both is micro and macro classes, HORRIBLE experience. He is by far the rudest and most degrading professor i've ever had. He'd tell people to shut up, he'd scream so loudly over NOTHING. And to top it off he'd come to class late. You won't succeed in his class unless you have very good test takign abilities, at least 1100 SAT
Prof Heslop is very knowledgeable in his field. I am a very good student with a 3.8 gpa, but I got a C in his class despite hours of studying/reading and using a tutor for help. My tutor was also helping another student who was taking an advanced grad school microecon class and said the topics we covered were easily a s advanced.
HE should be fired ... he is so loud he is give a headach , no matter hard you study you will NOT get a A. take his class and you will regret it. also he is boring as hell.

Look, heslop dont take any b.s. but hes got to be the coolest jamacan teacher in the system. his test are 100% multi. choice, he prides himself in his grammer, its hard to follow on test, trick q?'s, extra criedt for finding them first. dont buy the book you wont need it, take great notes and be at every class, gota b, heslop gets er don.
Prof. Heslop does 100% lecture which consists of 30% economics and 70% biased opinion. He seems to be very knowledgable, but does not teach the class as if it is an intro class. If you do not know anything about econ take another teacher. His exams are an exercise in minut semantics that do not always test econ.
Prof. Heslop is a man that is misunderstood. He cares deeply about his students, as well as their ability to grasp basic economic concepts. He does not put up with nonsense, nor does he allow students to run over him. Some of the comments listed are personal attacks on his personality. Which is fine, but as a teacher is amazing. Check him out.
MGH should be the only Econ teacher. very worldly and knows lots about how people live. his class is hard but if you ask, he will let you do extra credit. he can be often mistaken for an intimidating person but is very kind and cares about your grade more than you do. if you are choosing an econ professor on this site, CHOOSE MGH!!!
I really wanted to like this professor, but he was the worst teacher I have EVER HAD. He attacked his students with personal insults, was very stubborn, and his tests had HORRIBLE GRAMMAR! Perhaps he is misunderstood, but enough students have SPOKEN to him about what makes his teaching style so awful, and he hasn't changed. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
He is a great Professor. His classes are for those who are really interested in learning. If you are a slaker then you should find a different Prof. He is extremely helpful. If you come to his office for help he will go over any question you might have from your test or homework in detail. He is the kind of Prof. we need at NVCC.
Rambling lecture, tests are full of errors and poor wording that consume much of your time. Doesn't quite know how to handle students. Wearing a Bob Marley shirt complete with blunt did not make up for his flaws.
This is the worst professor Ive ever had in my life. He rambles on for hours and has a very poor teaching style. He personally insults students and has a hatred for Americans. He spent 20 minutes of my first class talking about how lazy and stupid American students were compared to Jamaicans. His tests have terrible grammar and he just plain sucks.
He is a horrible teacher. Who gave him his job?
I can tell only one word: RUN..........................................................................While it is not too late. He doesn't respect anybody. My question is, does NOVA has any idea what they are hiring??? This man need psichological help, I'm serious!!!
he does not like students.more than 50% the class fail most of his tests not becuase the students are unable to understand economics but his teaching style is bad.It is very likely he intimedates his students so they wont ask questions.its clear: the students are trying but heslop cant teach well enough 4 his students to meet his own expectations.
his class is very hard, but he is a nice guy al long as you show you are paying attention...he did bump my grade up to a C though!!
His tests are geared to find out what you don't know. They trip you up with weirdly phrased questions that take forever to figure out. He is cool outside of class, but he will go on and on about how stupid students are and how we put forth no effort. I worked my ass off in this class and got an A, so I don't know what he's talking about.
While I will agree that this guy is unbelievably hard (I still don't understand how I got a B in the class after all those F's) but I think he is still a very good teacher. This guy works his tail off to try to make students understand this stuff. Maybe he teaches poorly but I'm giving him an A for effort. You won't be dissapointed in his sincerity
took his class last semester, hard grader, lots of things to read and keep in mind, also lots of assingments.but he really is a best qualified teacher though, you have to be in class everyday, and everything he told you to.still it's really hard class, he makes things clearly to understand but in the test it is way too hard. HARD
this guy is an ok teacher. he is your best bet with econ teachers. he is hard but fair if you study you will do well.
Do NOT take him. You will not learn. His speech is not clear and can't be understood. He is rude to students and makes them feel as if they're all morons whehn they ask questions. You must act as if you are in preschool or you'll be yelled at. He does not deal with students as adults but as lesser people. I may file a formal complaint against him
He's one of the best professors I've ever had. His always willing to help. He's the best
he really is a qualified teacher. but too hard.lectures are hard and will demand lot of time to get A or B in his class. tests are extremely hard, unbeleivable. and for the final u'll have an oral test for ecnomics - which is quite crazy!! he's hard hard hard.. but if u try hard u'll learn a lot.
he really is a qualified teacher. but too hard.lectures are hard and will demand lot of time to get A or B in his class. tests are extremely hard, unbeleivable. and for the final u'll have an oral test for ecnomics - which is quite crazy!! he's hard hard hard.. but if u try hard u'll learn a lot.
Horrible teacher. Does not know how to teach effectivly. AVOID at all costs.
I took him for both mac (B 87)/micro (96 A). Very Good at teaching but don't question him or what he teaches. I will forever remember the stuff he taught though, as he said "YOU WILL WORK". As others say he does insult students. Don't listen to his speech on social healthcare either. Read every ? on tests, he will try to trick you
Horrible teacher, not recommended Stay away! Very Unorganized! If you cant keep track of attendance right then dont keep track of it and then blame the students for not coming to class
Professor is very good, and pationate about what he is teaching. If you care more about learning, than passing, take this class w/this professor, and disregard what others, say!
Very difficult to take in the summer. The professor really knew his materiel and never used notes. It was too fast for me to grasp.
I took this class during the summer (6-week session). It was way to fast, very compressed. His tests are extreamly hard, very confusing questions. Does not respond well to questlions in class, or if you disagree with something he says. He can be very helpful on occasions. He really knows his stuff. Don't take an abreviated class with him.
Mr. Heslop is an awesome teacher. I can't believe he has such negative ratings on here! He wants each and every one of his students to get an A. If you don't understand something, ask him. Def show up to class. He sometimes gives take home tests, or lets you work on tests together in class. He will do ALL he can to help you outside of class too!!!!
I went to his first class and never returned, he souded like a tough teacher, there's no way i would have made it. dont reccommend if you are not very hard working and dont know math well.
I took both mac and mic with him, got A's in both but without any resenment he is the rudest teacher I've ever had. I've seen him curse at students and get really nasty. His trick questions have nothing to do with econ, he'll just switch words around and ask very ambiguous questions. His testing and HW's are challenging for all the wrong reasons
Prof Heslop is definitely a very good teacher. Just make sure you ATTEND class! He gives a review guide of whats to come for every test, and the way he explains Economics is within a high level. Even though i managed to get a C through Micro, i could have done better if only i worked hard outside of class. So try to keep up!!
Prof. Heslop is not only unhelpful, but he's also a d***. He enjoyed berating and humiliating students who asked "stupid" questions or come in even one second after class begins. His tests are unreasonably hard and when the majority of the class got D's or worse he accused us of being "poor students who will never get into Harvard." Thanks, buddy.
I took this professor this past semester and I am still trying to figure out how is he a professor. It seems like he is out to fail you and is not helpful at all. I should have listened to these comments on here before taking his class. By far the worst professor that I have ever had. If you take him get ready for a nightmare.
Absolute waste of time and money. Do NOT sign up with him. He spent more time humiliating and degrading his students than teaching. His tests are beyond hard because he incorporates more than what he teaches.
I really don't understand why this guy is allowed to teach. There are no words for how rude and downright abusive he can be. When I missed the first day of class he actually yelled at me in the hallway! Please, please, please avoid him like the plague.
Class is entirely lecture, and he is very hard to understand vocally (he is Jamacian). Tests are extremely difficult. Very tough and contradicting grader. Also, presents his bias opinions that relate to econ every chance he gets.
this guy is horrible! Please do not take him!!!If you want an F, then it shouldn't be a problem.
Hes ok. Basically if you want to slide by do NOT take his course. His course if for people who WANT to learn the class and WANT to learn ECON. If you dont want to do NOT take his class it will be a living hell. A is possible if you just do what your suppose to. If you want to skid by for an A your in the wrong class.
Compared to the other Nova teachers he's hard, but honestly, not that difficult. I hate the comments that are like "If you want to actually learn" I didn't want to actually learn anything, I wanted an A, and it wasn't terrible, I mean Mason's MUCH worse. Dude, like half of my class got A's. But as a person, on a 1-10 scale I'd give him -2.
don't take this class! he's rude. his test make no sense... they have nothing to do with the notes or book! asking him questions is hard because he treats students like they're idiots and he gets mad at everything. half the time you don't know what he's teaching!
i do not reccomend this professor at all, he holds very biased opinions, and gives his marxist views every chance he gets, and hes very rude and hypocritical, he gets mad at the drop of a hat, if youre civil with him he wolnt bother you too much but hes just a very very difficult man who should not be teaching, though his accent is entertaining.
This guy really shouldn't be teaching. He is knowledgable but makes learning difficult because of his nasty attitude. If he suspects that you miss a class he'll auto accuse you of constantly skipping and being lazy. Too egotistical, impatient and ignorant to hear you out after that point. I came enthusiastic about econ and left feeling wronged.
he is not a man of his words. don't ever believe on what he says especially about the homeworks and tests. very hard questions in the tests. no matter what, he has to be right one way or the other (lots of attitude). he pretends to be nice and doesn't care about anything. always late to class with some excuse.
He's a difficult professor, no question about it. However, get past his heavy accent and actually pay attention to his lectures (which means get to class on time), then students may learn a lot. Also, professor Heslop may be very strict, but if you treat him with respect and not take his criticisms personally, the class can be much easier.
First day of class, 10 students showed up. Second day of class only 5 found its way back to the classroom. Third day, he is down to 2 guys. Do YOU need more to know?
amazing professor, really knows his stuff, all these negative comments are the ones who get all rebellious with him in class for no reason...he deserves more respect for his GREAT teaching skills, he really pushes your mind to go beyond ..if you want an easy A forget about this class..STUDY STUDY but worth it!!
He is a terrible teacher. i took him during a 6 week summer session and he was as everyone said very rude and unforgiving. not a very nice teacher and didnt seem like he wanted to help me when i asked him questions out of class. his lecture notes are sloppy and too fast. whatever you do please dont take his class...he's a jerk and terrible teacher
Actually he is a very kind and helpful teacher. It is not an easy A in the sense that you can just show up and get one. He makes you work for your grade but as long as you show up to class and take good notes you will be fine. Those people that had problems with him are most likely lazy and rude. He is not rude, just wants respect, its not hard
I loved this class. I read these comments before I took the class , and they're why I picked him. He is tough, but you learn a lot. You have to put in a lot of time. You have to read the newspaper. Accurate study guides. So many options for the writing assignments that you can easily find something you know well. Very liberal. Fascinating.
I took his eco201. He is really a serious professor. If you want to get an A,the only thing you shoud do is study and study. But his class is helpful.Someone who said he is terrible because they didn't study hard and didn't get an A from him.
took him for both macro and micro and ended up with an A and B. hes a hard professor but he knows what hes talking about. all these people who dont like him probably didnt want to put the effort into the class and were expecting to blaze through it like its high school. NOT gonna happen.
I got A in his class. It's also easy for anyone who is willing to study and review to get A. He is very patient and glad to answer all your questions about economics. if you really want to learn something about economics. He is the best choice. If you just want to kill your time on his class, you should go away.
He is really a good teacher and very fair. He is one of the best teachers that I ever had and it's becasue he sets the standards and expectations very high. you study hard and you learn the materials very well. If you want to learn and study you want to take him, but if ur lazy and want a easy grade ur getting an F. He is very hard sometimes but th
You will regret taking his class. Although he explains everything very well, his tests are ridiculously difficult. He's uncompromising about everything and easily gets offended. The beginning of every class starts with him complaining about students who don't show up. I really dislike this man.
This guy is crazy, he give so many tests and each test has 60 question, but the class is only 1hr and 45 min. NOT ENOUGHT@@@!!! When i did all my HW and i got 2 B on the first 2 exam then i choose not to take the finial as he say if you want to take what you have and not to take the finial is OK!!! but he give me a C!!! coz he is crazy!!!
I dont know why he has bad ratings. It's probably because people are lazy and expect an easy A. He is not the easiest of teachers, but this is college. The tests are hard and you will need to study and take good notes in class to get an A. One thing is his handwriting is hard to read. If you're up for a challenge, take his class.
Awesome teacher! Will take him again. I worked not so hard but learned a lot and got an A. Not sure why so many negative comments? Heslop is intelligent, funny, punctual and a man with principles. Respect him and he will help you at any time.
The WORST teacher ever! has some issues about himself that he should leave outside the classroom. Once he did not want to teach part of a chapter because he thought he already did even though we told him he didn?t. On the final he forgot to tell us we could have calculators and because of it we did not finished the test. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Professor Heslop is a good teacher. Be sure to go to class and take notes, none of the tests are based on the book. I wouldn't even buy the book. As long as you take good notes, and review them for exams, you should do fine. I got an A. It's important not to miss class because his exams are based solely on his lectures.
horrible teacher. he knows his stuff, but cannot teach at all. he rants on his personal issues before teaching, does not cover all material. if you can take this class with someone else, DO SO
Worst teacher I've had, period. He made a mistake on an exam question and refused to give anyone credit for it, even though there wasn't a right answer listed. He is headstrong to a fault. Avoid this man at all costs!
This professor is horrible. He only yells and tries to intimidate the students. Do not question him about ANYTHING!! He does not use the textbook, but requires you to buy it. His class is only for his viewpoint on politics- not Microeconomics. Stay away at all costs!!!
The worst college professor I've ever had! He wastes time talking about personal issues and politics. He's VERY biased, and tries to intimidate students my making quizzes/tests harder than need be. He gets mad if you go against him on anything. Very hostile and unpleasant. He knows his stuff but doesn't teach it properly. Very confusing and hard!
Searching for truth is difficult within this website. In your search, it is first necessary to define what a "good" professor means to you. Do you want to skip class and still pass with an A? Or would you like to study and learn? The latter is more important to me. What people like to hear is illusion, what people should hear is reality.
Wow, I was very surprised at how bad his teaching is. He brings too much of his own opinions into classes, lectures for hours on topics students can comprehend more easily from reading the textbook for five minutes, and makes homework and tests excessively difficult. The textbook was quite expensive and is rarely if ever used.
he suckssss!! hes always late (10-15min). He teaches tpu aboyt something and tests you on something else. He talks about his opinion and might hurt waht you feel/belief/etc. take him if you want to waste your time. he is really bad
I finished with 102%. Also the only student who challenged his weekly pro-Obama, anti-capitalism diatribes. He will proudly make it known that he favors big-govt socialism, but will engage in a debate if you know what you're talking about. That said, he definitely knows the material and explains it clearly. Copy his board notes. Graded fairly.
Confusing and badly written tests, badly written questions causing confusion, seemingly unanswerable, noticeable typos and mistakes No in depth coverage of topics significant enough to help in answering test questions topics on tests not covered in class or the textbooks assignment of take home tests before topics are covered in class
Gave us 1 HW assignment that accounted for 1/3 of the final grade, and his grading seemed opinionated. I could be doing better in the class (think I'll come out with a C), but this guy really lacks a lot, and is NOT your usual professor. He usually comes in a little late and while the entire class has been waiting for him, he comes in and
Warning: horrible professor. You decide whether or not to subject yourself to hypocrisy and ignorance because they are both abundant in his classroom. He digresses about his BS every class and always makes it a point to let everyone know just how bad little black babies have it and on and on and on and on and on. Seriously, this guy is a headache.
Tough but great professor.
Class lectures are critical. If you have good testing skills you will do fine. Cares about students and even gives take-home tests. Not an easy A, but not so hard either.
Honestly before taking this class, I had a relatively low interest in economics, however after taking his class, economics is one of my favorite subjects. He is very good at explaining topics. However, it's not an easy class and you will need test taking skills!
Always available to his students. Will explain you things as many time as you need. Class is not easy, so, you need to study to get good grades. He tells you to buy the book, but no need for it. I barely used it. So, unless you plan on becoming an Economist, I do not recommend buying an expensive book to let it sit on your desk.
he's tough but he knows alot his exams are little hard but he gives extra credit its not an easy class it requires alot of work i got an A but i worked hard for it
horriable teacher, dont take this jerk, the test are really hard and complicated, the worest professor in my 5 semesters at nova
I remember reading through rate my prof. to see what this professor would be like and I actually thought to myself, "it cant be that bad" BUT IT CAN! do not take him! he isnt fair, he constantly puts down people, stops in the middle of a class discussion to yell for 15 minutes at some kid for being 5 minutes late. Dont do it, TRuST ME!
The absolute worse experience I've ever had in a class room. He is rude, unapproachable and excessively hard with his tests. Instead of taking some responsibility for his own shortcomings as a teacher when half the class fails a test, he berates and belittles the class. Unless you are fond of verbal abuse, avoid his class at all costs.
Constantly late to his own class, takes up his own class time ranting his own political views, then holds the class past time to finish his lecture. Scolds pupils for disrespect in front of entire class for putting books away at 10:10 pm which is when class should end. Where is his respect for students? Maybe some students need to catch a bus.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! First of all he is just very boring, his lectures are torture to sit through. Secondly, as many others have said, he often insults his students. And he likes to go off on whatever random thing is pissing him off that day. Tests are hard too, and he doesnt explain things very well. DONT TAKE
DONT TAKE.very hard,always mad never help.BORING TEACHER
He is a nice guy. In order to understand the subjects he teaches, you really have to have an interest in the first place. Fastest writer in a marker board I've ever seen, which doesn't help as far as note taking. Sounds like the majority of the raters here were looking for a "gimme" class - this was definitely not one of them.
He is late to every single class and students have to stay 10 or 15 minutes after class was scheduled to end to make up for it. When students have to leave he gets upset and starts ranting because they are leaving and wastes class time doing that, verbally abusive when he thinks someone is making him look bad, does not go by lectures/notes for test
horrible professor I have ever encountered, book is very expensive and does not use it. Notes and lectures are not what's on tests. Frequently makes mistakes on exams and blames the students for not catching it, Make a note of what he tells you bc he quickly changes his mind and says he never said that. Changes rules everyday to his convenience.
He is a good professor who knows the material very well. However, over the course of the semester, the exams got harder and harder. The good thing is that the final exam is dropped and you can walk with your coursework grade. Overall I would say you can take Economics with him, but study like there is no tommorow for those exams!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!!He is rude, he belittles the teacher, he is sloppy and you can barely understand what he is talking about. He is overly opinionated and speaks very low about Americans and the current state of our economy. 30 people at the beginning of the class, 4 at the end...you do the math :(
I came out learning more about his personal life and feelings rather than Economics. I feel he resents the fact that he teaches at a Community College in a wealthy area (he makes that fairly clear). Wildly difficult exams and the notes barely relate to the material.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. HE ALWAYS TALKS OUT OF COURSE.
This is the worst Econ teacher at Nova. He belittles teacher and students that does not agreed with him. His test is very hard and does not cover the notes in class. And he is very opinionated about the us economy and students work. Don't singed up for his class unless you want to fail the course
Repect his philosophy...but that's it.. His expectation is too high. Tests are NOT related to lecture and books.
Awful teacher. Promises to help students but never follows through. Must play by his exact rules to get anywhere and even sometimes he doesn't respect those. Tests are extremely difficult. He teaches on the topics but the tests go much deeper then he teachers. He never brought a book to class or referenced any notes. Do not take ECON with him.
If you are looking for an easy class then do not sign up.He does give a very interesting and passionate lecture. The tests are not easy but if you study you will do fine, after all its community college, just show up!If you want an easy A look elsewhere, if you want to learn something then take it.And yes he does yell at late students(kind of funny)
If you want to fail, take this class. Have fun
This Professor I believed has somethin against United Sates system as a whole not only Economybut everything. He makes a big deal out of everything and if someone is not agree with him on anything he reminds the student one and all over again each class. I'm sorry to say this but I think he is not a normal guy ); and I'm agree with the others you'l
This professor has a problem(personal problem)sorry to say that he is unatractive and unhappy at all. He hates young men. He likes to see young girls in his office. He has a hidden agenda.
If you are reading this, and the 27 other pages of ratings on this professor, yet you still take his class, then you are a true idiot. He is an angry, negative, foul, degrading person.I have always been an A/B student, graduated high school in 3 years with an advance diploma and a really nice GPA, yet he basically called me stupid. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
If you want to learn something and study(isn't it what you are going to school for?!) take this class! Otherwise, don't bother. I loved his class period!
TAKE HIS CLASS!!! you will learn a bunch of necessary things. go to his office hours and consult with him. He is great!!!
Wasted $200 on a textbook which he doesn't use at all. Sets up appointments with students and doesn't show up. Is ideologically motivated and biased. According to the administration, is only kept on the payroll because of affirmative action.
Tests are difficult. He doesn't use textbook. He class isn't easy. You have to study really hard to get A or B. And he gets frustrated easily.
I have never in my life ever had such a horrible teacher! I am a hard working and respectful student. I had him over the summer and he was extremely rude. He says that students who don't pass his class are because they don't study but it's because he lacks clarity in his questions on tests and refuses to accept that he's was unclear or mistaken.
I wish if I had read the comments by other students before I took his class. His exams are extremly hard because he expects us to think really deep into his exam questions. He is always 15 to 20 minutes late to his class and blames on traffic (LOL) and I personally think he is kinda wierd.
This teacher is awful. His test are hard and never uses the text book. He is weird please never take his class.
He is an ok professor, but his exams are very difficult! The book is helpful only if you study extremely hard. He does NOT like it when students do not do well on his exams! He also does not tolerate tardiness!
hates when students ask questions, he is NEVER wrong, dont question him, you can hardly understand him, his tests are not about if you know the subject matter, rather if you can decipher his cracked out logic.
I'm seriously warning you to never ever never ever take him. You might have an anxiety attack and die. This man thinks NOVA is an IV league school. I gave it my all, blood, sweat, and tears. Studied until my eyes bled for this class and still did poorly. I've been an A student up until this class. Not only am I mentally drained, but emotionally.
Like the others have said, he is a extremely HARD teacher. Just because, he doesn't explain very well or in detail. He hates when people ask questions. Sometimes insults the students. Really hates when students fail his tests. However, I will respect his knowledge/philosphies in life and whatnot.
VERY DIFFICULT. He tends to yell a lot. Does not use a textbook. Is very quick during lectures and doesnt like questions. I put in serious work to get a B.. very very tough, take a different professor even if the class is on sunday.
The best economics professor I have ever had. I do understand why some students complain here, he is not an easy teacher. You have to want to learn, and actively listen to his lectures to do well. Prior to taking his course, I had no interest whatsoever in economics, now I've transfered to GMU and I'm studying econ as a major.
Highly not recommened. Understandable but you must listen carefully. Class is all about notes. Politically motivated, then counters his opinion when discussing a market economy. Read from a known Communist agitators book (Noam Chomsky) to class. Loves inserting global warming, health care, and redistribution into his 10 minute off subject
His tests were confusing. seemed like a b c d were the same thing but in different words. this class was a total WASTE OF MY TIME.
one of the rudest teacher in my life, doesn't care about students. He does not use notes in the class and ask student the hardest question anyone can possibly think out in the exam so no one can solve.80% of my class students got 60 points below in his exam, and barely remaining got 70-75. WARNING!!!please do not take this class.
The best eco prfessor at NOVA. I can say this after taking 202 with another professor.I wish I had taken it with Heslop, but unfortunately I couldn't, because it was an evening class. If you really want to learn something take HIM, specialy 202 is all concept based and I regreted after taking it with another professor
The best ECO professor at NOVA. I can say this after taking 202 with another professor. I wish I had taken 202 with him as I took 201, but unfortunately it was offered at evening. ECO 202 is all concept based and you can't do it untill you have clear concepts, Professor is the best at giving clear concepts. so what are you waiting for. sign up NOW!
I recommend you avoid. I've got "A's" in College Chemistry I and Calculus with Analytic Geometry, but its his entry level course to Macro Economics that breaks my A streak. He gave a take home test that no one in any of his classes got above a 90 on. That right there should tell you everything you need to know about him. A freaking take home test!
I liked his class. It was pretty straightforward. I had him for ECON 201 and decided to take his ECON 202 class. If you take good notes and actually pay attention, you'll pass. The test and the notes go hand in hand. As long as you do the work and actually use the study guide that he gives for EVERY test, it's an easy A.
I never expect a class to be 'easy'. You have to do your homework and study of course but there are WAY better professors to take economics than this one. I have no idea why some of the reviewers here would even take his yelling and cursing. Do any of you guys have balls?
He is very difficult and confusing. Class consists of him talking and writing on the board but his handwriting is terrible at best. He's rude and expects everyone to know what he does. Tests are confusing and in a class of about 15 not a single person received an A
If he get the opertunity, he'll go on a long tangent. Taking notes can be difficult because his hand writing is so bad. His tests are hard. If you bomb one, you may get an opportunity to do an essay to make it up. He's a little abrassive, dont be intimidated. Take clear notes and ask lots of questions even if you know the material.
He was a terrible professor. Went on huge tangents about how bad he thinks republicans are. Yells at students. Tell them they are dumb when they dont agree with his political tangents. He is the worst professor i've ever had. Rude beyond all believe. Don't understand why he is still at nvcc.most students dropped... DO NOT TAKE HIM
DO NOT TAKE HIM!Never!!The worest prof.at NOVA.tests aren't about knowing the answer but a cheap word game.He brags about things that you would think are just standard.
YOU GRADE OPTIONS ARE EITHER D(if u work hard) OR F. he can't contain himself in the class gets distracted so easy and burst out on students who has no interest in his personal life.
He is very hard teacher. He tells the students about the test just before a day and expects them to do well on the test. he also provides study guide which is useless, it is not help full at all. Half of the stuff on the study guide he never teaches in class. On more thing is that he makes his own test questions which are very hard.
He is a real ball buster, the class is very confusing because he has terrible handwriting and is all over the place. Most of the class will be spent ranting against the U.S. and the exam is made to trick students to chose the wrong answer. AVOID AT ALL COST
Do not take him. He is a major hazard to your grade and your interest for the subject. No clear instruction for his assignments.
Took his summer class and went into it thinking this shouldn't be too bad. I struggled to get out of that class with a C and I made A's in all my other classes. If you don't like the idea of a 4.0 GPA, take his class. He rambles on about who knows what about liberalism/socialism, then expects you to know all the material for his self-written tests.
Do not take him.he said he taught@Nova for over 10 years, but Still clueless on how to do a study guide, focus on lecture or give clear instruction on assignments. Grade is F or D. The guy has no confidence in himself and somehow students are to blame.
Avoid at all cost, that is all
Avoid at all cost, pick some one else, any one else. that is all
This is the worst teacher I have ever taken. Lectures are convoluted and unorganized. His tests have material not covered in class on them and he tries to trick you with his wording. He uses big words to seem intelligent but when errors are pointed out he cannot explain the answer. NO BUENO
He lectures quickly so make sure you focus on taking notes. Gives out study guides for each test and almost everything on the test comes from lectures so you don't really need the text. Tests are hard but lots of chances for extra credit on test. If you want to be coddled and get an easy A take someone else. If you want to learn economics take him
Best teacher Ever! Always willing to help students!
Wether you want an easy A or a challenging class, I don't recommend Mr. Heslop. He overcomplicates economics. His tests are confusing and he can get some answers wrong. He often finishes his lecture 5 minutes late. If you still get him, he'll be nice to you if you're serious and you can manage an A if you study hard.
This is the worst professor in NOVA avoid him at all costs. He failed me and I never missed a class and studied all his notes
This guy wastes half the class going off on useless tangents which is unfortunate due to the length of the class being 4 hours long. He could probably cut it down to two if he gave simpler expectations of what he wants us to know as opposed to 4 different variations of the same topic making it confusing.
He's a cool guy as a friend, but as a teacher he's not any good. He over complicates things, he never follows the book. He gets off task all the time, and his tests are way to confusing.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. HE IS NO HELP AND VERY ARROGANT
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! Does not have an accurate study guide for tests. Overly opinionated on politics. (Hint: EXTREMELY liberal) His attitude is less then pleasant. Does not use the book AT ALL! You're better off buying the book and CLEP'n out of the class.
Worst professor I have ever had! his tests are all trick questions that make you confused. His "study guides" dont match the test and has nothing to do with the test. He yells about random liberal issues throughout class, and does not teach us a thing!!!
He has no respect for students and is very mean to us. When he makes mistakes, it's okay, but if we make a slight one it's armageddon. He never follows the syllabus but expects us to. He makes test question options the same but switches up one word to trick you. He could yell at a terminal child and not apologize for it.
The professor appears to have a lot of knowledge in the subject. But the fact that he knows about economics does not make him a professor. As mentioned by other people rating him, his study guys are a joke, completely useless, he goes on random unnecessary tangents, and some of the questions in the test were never covered. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
He's an amazing teacher but if your not willing to be an amazing student you will not do well. If you want to walk out of a class understanding the material this is the guy to take. If you want an easy A, skip class, and don't take sufficient notes I wouldn't take his class. Although if you are up for a challenge with an a cool funny guy take him.
After taking Classes at NOVA for over 10 years, in many fields and careers, i feel confident when I say that, this class has been the worst experience I've ever had at NOVA. It's hard to follow along with his lectures due to the overwhelming amount of tangents in his lecture. He goes off in unnecessary topics, and wastes too much time.
Professor Heslop is extremely knowledgeable, and has real potential to be a great instructor. He just wants to throw some knowledge out and hope it sticks. His tests really hard in comparison with the subject. He won't return emails, and is always at least 5 minutes late. Highest grade in the class was a very low B.
Please don't take it! you rather stay home than take these useless class. Worst experience ever at NVCC.
He is a really weird, awkward, and obnoxiously opinionated man. He rambles on about irrelevant topics for much of his lectures and you have to do a lot of learning on your own to be ready for tests. it is not an overly difficult class however and the workload is not overwhelming.
So, for rather unusual reasons, this was the most difficult course I've ever taken. My 81% was the highest in the class. No curve. His academic philosophy is heavily influenced by his experience growing up in Jamaica, where getting a good education was clearly much more of a struggle, and he tries to duplicate this intensity through his tests.
Asked for 5 paged then changed his mind to 10 pages and he wanted you to be specific about a country's economy. Hand writing is UNCLEAR AT ALL, also he reads wrong books and he thinks it's the best by recommending it to students. Asked for a book and never used
Do not waste your time with him, and if you do get stuck with him don't ever expect any reading out of the textbook I'm quite sure he doesn't even follow it. I'm honestly not even sure where he gets his material from, and it's honestly pointless to even listen to him since he tests on the most random things. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!
Me on the phone equals trouble But if his phone rings it's okay. study guides useless . He goes into disturbing topics., twice while I was drinking water my plastic bottle made cringing noise(accident) he got mad. When I went to see if I should take final he called me disgustingly rude and wished he'd never see me again,I came out crying .
I'm going to give an honest review of him about half way through the class. Heslop is passionate, somewhat demanding, and teaches a very lecture heavy class. The textbook is not necessary to succeed but helps. If you want to succeed YOU HAVE to study on your own time. He often goes off on a tangent during lectures. 4 tests, 2 assignments.
He has 4 test one of them take home test and final exam but you can choose not to take final exam and take the grade you have before final. One homework assignment, but it is pretty hard. Test is not that hard if you study with notes from class and stuff that is on his website. Kinda gets off topic pretty often in class
He tells it like it is. I have much respect for him and he did me a favor of telling me of what to improve on. He makes you think and his class isnt an easy A, you earn what you work for. He gives a lot of information of what goes on in society. He will reach out to you if you need assistanc. take advantage of office hours.
Have to write a few papers Makes you think does not sugar coat anything test are pretty hard is funny
I am one to take notes in class- that's how I learn. I rely on what he says to take notes but he's hard to understand and his hand writing is bad. This professor walks into class so unprepared. He doesn't have power points and the terms, notes and study guides he posts are honestly not that useful. I do not recommend.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!! He does not use power points and his hand writing is terrible so you can't understand what he is writing down. He grades a little unfairly and some of the assignment qusetions make no sense at all. His exams are pretty simple, but he wording he uses on some of the questions makes no sense at all.
Typically (not always) goes on for the first half of the class on his latest ultra left-wing rant. All the indoctrination he dismisses as "econ related". The $200 dollar book is never used. The periodic assignments are filled w questions not covered in class for 1 min. Does not answer emails. I tried repeatedly. If you liked USSR this is for you.
The first five minutes of almost every class will involve waiting on Mr. Heslop to arrive. For a man who opines about the lack of respect for others that young people have these days, he sees no irony in being habitually late. The textbook is never used. The lectures are repetitve & incoherent, in most cases. The test questions are riddles.
Very knowledgeable. if you show up to class and take notes you will pass. Very detailed and the lectures include a lot of information. Provides notes on his website , basically of a breakdown of the topics to help you prepare for tests and complete homework which was a huge help to me. has a good sense of humor and actually kind of funny at times
Professor Heslop is one of the toughest professors I have ever had, but I am thankful for him, because he knows how to get things to your head. I learned a lot during his class. If you are lazy, don't show up at school, don't take this class. Show up at class, take notes, and study from his website and you'll pass. It is not easy, but possible.
Professor Heslop was like a bad middle school teacher. He loves teaching but is sloppier then any teacher I have ever had before. He scribbles over his scribble and it is almost impossible to take notes or read feedback. He is extremely close minded and although it was an ECON class, it was more of a bias political opinion class.
This class is an Easy A. We had 4 tests, 2 in-class, and 2 take-home-tests. There are 5 Assignments that you have to complete all semester.
Professor Heslop is a very interesting individual. He goes on a lot of tangents while lecturing. He doesnt reply to emails. He does grade assignments quickly and hands them back with comments on how to improve your quality of work though! Textbook is a waste of money(barely used) Good luck! Would not recommend and his exams are poorly written.
5 homework assignments- 4 exams. Textbook is barely used- Heslop is a tough grader! This class is not a easy A- Heslop will tell you that you have to work hard for your grade! He offers many chances for redos- important to talk to him if you are struggling. Dont wait till the last week to act like a student and seek help. Read tests carefully!
A hypocrite. Constantly late/absent. He expects post grad level work from a Survey course. His political views interfere too often. Text is not used. Lectures do not help. Tests are terribly phrased. Hw is unrelated. Doesn't email back. Doesn't care about students. Makes excuses for lack of timely grading. Don't take this professor. Ever.
I enjoyed his lectures but honestly, I didn't really care for them unless they helped with our exams and they didn't. I think he really does care for his students 'cause he offers a lot of re-do's. However, his lectures are redundant. I wouldn't recommend him but if you do take his class, show up to get on his good side but it's mostly self study.
I signed up for the 8 week course, 3 assignments 2 in-class tests, 1 take-home test. Assignments were graded impossibly, no matter how much work you put into it he would grade harshly. Final was optional although he recommended many not take it because it wouldn't make a difference in their grade.
He's hard to understand and will go on political rants often. I feel like he injects too much of his personal opinions into his teachings. Doesn't seem to care whether his students fail or not, no one got an A in my entire class yet he blamed us for not putting in the work. Would not recommend.
He teaches the material one way, tests it another way. Textbook? Doesn't even follow it, not even worth the buy. Website? Useless. He's supposed to give us an introduction to economics, but instead introduced us to the economics of drugs and prostitution. Words cannot begin to describe how offended I am of this "teacher." Save yourself and run.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time learning from Professor Heslop. He genuinely cares about having his students succeed, he clearly communicates course material, and the tests come straight from the study guides. This class is incredibly straight forward as long as you show up, complete the FOUR assignments and study for the FOUR exams. A great soul.
He's honestly not as bad as a lot of people here make him out to be. He does go on political tangents and inject a lot of his political beliefs into the class, but at the very least he uses those beliefs to connect with the course material. Textbook is good only if you need to cite papers. If you show up and take good notes, his class is a breeze
He's a very tough grader! He always talks about his personal believes, I respect that but sometimes has nothing to do w the subject, a student even had to raise his had and tell him to go back to the subject. I take lots of notes but none is on the quizzes. I asked everyone if they know what's going on and no one has clue. Ppl stopped showing up.
The material in the class is difficult so YOU need to put the work in! Don't expect to get an A without studying and practicing outside of class. Professor Heslop is a NOT bad professor. His knowledge shows in his lectures, he is very understanding if you have difficulties with the material and is happy to help. Do your work and you will pass!
Worst professor in the world, I once nominated his for a teachers award but now fully retract it, and one time I did do my friends hw just to get a head in class and ha. The person is very unreasonable and should be fired, his problems; he gets personal, he is uneducated, and has a pseudo-intellectual aire of false pretence regarding his work thx
By far the worse professor I have ever had, he doesn't post any notes or powerpoints on blackboard. you cannot read his handwriting on the board. he has a heavy accent so you cannot properly understand him. He is really tough on grading the homework if you don't explain it like the way he wants he will fail you even it you have the right idea
I enjoyed his lectures and he is in general, a very flexible professor in terms of accommodating students. You need to go to class in order to pass, and he does grade your homework very harshly. His tests aren't terrible by any means. Just buckle down on homework and you'll be alright. Homework is honestly the hardest part of the course.
Great professor, I took him Fall 2018 passed the class with a B. Do your work and pay attention in class and read your textbook. Do what you are supposed to do and you will pass. Get ready to takes during lectures, no powerpoints.
Worst Professor ever. Never again.
He RANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you learn Econ for 30 mins and he rants in beginning of class. he yells at students for one mistake to the entire class. he has 4 tests. 2 in class and 2 take home. 3 HW. his test is really hard, you can't find any of his questions on quilt because he creates his own test. never ever take this professor
This is an economics professor who thinks communist Cuba is a good idea. That should tell you everything you need to know. By far the worst Prof. I've had in NOVA. Spends half the lecture ranting about his extreme left views and how awful the US is even though he choose to live here, and the best part is it has zero relevance to the subject.
very political, rants a lot, grade assignments like an english professor. compensates for poor test scores (result of his teaching) by adding 20+ extra credit questions to tests. writes all his own test and assignment questions, they rarely make any sense so you are left spending most of your time trying to figure out what is being asked.
Decided to make this bc of a comment he made in class about this rating. to be 100% fair the class does feel like its a higher level course so if you're looking for an easy A this isn't for you; however, if you want to be prepared for your transfer school then take this class to get a taste of whats to come. I do believe this has made me better.
3 test 3 assignment 1 final (optional depending on grade) Do your work just like anything else and you will be fine.
The worst professor I have ever taken. I wold rather face Virginia traffic during rush hour and go to another campus that take this professor. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you don't show up to class you wont pass the tests since he doesn't use the 4 books he suggests you buy in the beginning of the semester. I wish I could write more. Hes bad
He gives extra credit on all his tests. Lecture heavy and you need to take notes because all the test questions are made by him. 3 homework assignments that end up being 45% of your grade and he grades them very harshly. Rants about the smallest things, gave us a 15 min lecture about preparation for class cause someone didn't staple some hw
okay, I'm not being dramatic but he's the worst teacher I have ever had in my life heavy accent hard grader and the worst handwriting ever
Probably one of the worst experiences I've had as a student. He does not only over explain the most simple things(spend two days going over the syllabus) but he often goes off topic. His lectures are boring and his hand writing is illegible, you will have to rely on the notes he posts online. The book was a waste of money as well.
There are moments where this professor is quite incomprehensible,he also has the most confusing speaking style and communication style in emails. He is also very unclear in what he expects out of assignments and will take weeks to grade them. Be prepared to teach yourself certain subjects as he goes of tangent so often things get skipped but tested
Awful experience
If you actually want to know what is going on in your course I don't suggest this class. He never posted our final exam online, and he acted as though we were the ones at fault for it. He is unclear about expectations. I am an A student in my 400 level courses at a University, and this class was more work, and less comprehensible than any of them.
Professor Heslop is the best professor I have ever had... His lectures are entertaining and he tells real-world examples and stories. He is passionate about economics and it really shows. Both classes had 3 tests and 3 assignments with an optional final. LOTS of extra credit. Do the work and you will do well. Its a privilege to learn from him.
This will be the most accurate review you will read. No matter what class you take with him, he knows his stuff. Very lecture heavy. Incredibly critical grader. Homework is weighted the same as the test. Want atleast a B? Do all the homework. He gives a lot of extra credit on the multiple choice tests so it helps. Can be tough w grading.
The most unprofessional, disrespectful teacher I have ever had in my life. He was very little communication skills and does not know how to be a professional. There was little homework, all quizzes, all tests. There was even "hidden" extra work that was not put into modules or syllabus, so beware of hidden assignments.
I took Professor Heslop completely online and his lectures were very boring. He is a very nice guy and he knows what he's talking about, but he goes off topic a lot. He is also a very tough grader so expect to go above and beyond on your assignments. The grade consists of 3 tests, 2 discussions, and 2 assignments. The final exam is optional.
He is the worst professor I ever had, whos either doesnt know how to use Canvas correctly or being too lazy to set up grade weight. He never gets the weight and percentage for grade right, so I end up having a 148% for the final grade shown on Canvas, but certainly the truth is not. Grade only by few assignments, each counts for 10% final grade
All of the feedback he has given me has been unhelpful, bland, and it feels like he is not even reading my work. This has been the worst experience I have ever had with a professor online. If possible avoid.
Don't take it unless you're a Econ major. Honestly not worth it if you're just taking it to fill a credit for college. Worked ridiculously hard for a B. The textbook is like a riddle and the assignments are hard.
If you do an assignment perfectly, he will make up a reason to give you a 60%. He rarely answer emails, but if he does, he gives a ridiculously vague answer that doesn't help. The exams are only available for one day, so you'd better make sure you're free on that one Sunday. On top of all of that, he just puts very little effort into his job.
Would not recommend taking his class. You spend two days going over the syllabus and on top of that he never responds to emails. Assignments are impossible to receive a good grade on as he expects essays per questions even though the answer to the question can be easily explained. Goes off topic WAY too much so it makes the lectures hard to follow.
Explains topics very thoroughly. As long as you pay attention to lectures, you will pass! On the other hand, if you dont take class seriously it will be reflected in your grade. He really believes in students reaching their full potential and provides in depth feedback to help students improve academically. Overall great teacher!
this is by far the worst teacher. he locs pointless assignments and has a control problem.
The most unprofessional professor I've come across with. He's a tough grader and not clear with his expectations. I would not recommend anyone to take his class unless you really have to.
Horrible profesor. Doesnt matter how well you do on your homework, will always find a reason to give a low grade. Takes ages to grade your work and never responds to emails. AVOID AT AL COSTS
Professor Heslop is a difficult professor! He is an unnecessarily tough grader, and not easy to learn from. Also, his feedback is not helpful. Avoid this class if you can!
he's the worse human alive. colleges need to get rid of terrible people like prof Heslop
Professor Heslop needs to retire. He is definitely one of the worse professors I have ever had. I wish I had referred to this platform before taking this course.
I enjoyed professor Heslops class, although he is a tough grader. If you're looking for a class you don't have to try in, this ISN'T the professor for you. For discussions, he outlines exactly what he wants and if you don't follow it to a T, then don't expect to get an A. He responds to emails quickly & is there if you have any questions.
Unless you do discussion posts the perfect way he envisions it, you'll get 60%. Take his feedback and apply it, it's like it doesn't even matter. Also in a totally asynchronous class he set ONE DAY to complete Lockdown Browser practice. If you didn't, you couldn't take any of the exams and had to beg him to retry. So much for online flexibility.
He is a very slow speaker, does not get to the point, difficult to even want to do well in this class, provides feedback in essay length and has no leeway with creative thinking.
Online class, and it's extremely easy. Could easily have an A but it's as if the professor doesn't want anyone to get a good grade. You need to do a PERFECT discussion post to even get about 16/30 on it. I think my discussion posts averaged in the low 70s, when tests, quizzes, and homework were all above 83%. I would advise against his class.
He finds any little excuse to not give you an A on any written work. His lectures could typically be boiled down to a 15 min power point, and one was easily boiled down to a graph which was easier to understand. He fought me tooth and nail to not accept an assignment that I submitted on time due to the format being in word.
Recently, I got into a car accident and have a concussion. I asked for accommodations based on doctors orders with proof and he said "NO you cannot! No student gets that opportunity!". I then took the final and failed due to my concussion and my inability to focus and was sick the whole day the following day. Worst professor I've ever had!
I had Professor Heslop in an asynchronous course. I fell slightly behind and every time I reached out for help he scolded me for my grade and didn't offer any help. I turned in three late assignments the last week of class out of pure desperation, and he wrote me a five paragraph rant on why I don't deserve to have my assignments accepted.
Professor Heslop has high expectations, but if you stay on top of the work, the class is doable. The lectures can be tough, but try using tools like unstuckstudy ai along with the textbook to succeed.
Does not understand english and will blatantly lie to take points off assignments. Encourages you to contact him regarding concerns only for him to reply in gibberish and arrogantly deny his mistakes in grading.
This professor gave us a study guide which was 100% useless when it came to the test the questions were different by the time I picked him by mistake saw his rating and wasn't suprised
For a guy that has lived in the US for over 20 years, makes 100k a year teaching basic econ at a community college(Found out via Openpayroll), and achieved all of this after coming from Jamaica(He will never stop mentioning taking a class from Kamala Harris's dad), he hates capitalism a lot.
This professor is the worst there is.He grades slowly, makes work too difficult&resources aren't correctly given that covers the hw given.Gave me a 2/10 for intro bc I didn't answer 1 question.1 may say "That's your fault" but no, his explanations are too wordy and requirements for assignments aren't stated well. Most prof grades it as participation
The lecture was tough because the professor explained things very slowly and struggled to use Canvas.Whenever we have a test, His lectures are confusing it's hard to understand what he's saying or what he wants us to understand. Even when I spend a long time working on homework or discussion boards, he always finds a way to lower my grade. AVOID!!
0 Rubric for any discussions. Graded discussions on obscure things that were never asked for/outlined in prompt. Lectures unnecessarily long. I got a 4 on AP Micro. It is not even that the class is diffucult, as I get 95+ on all 3 test, but he's just a horrible teacher.
I enjoyed having Professor Heslop for Microeconomics. Not many assignments, but they count for a lot. Pay attention, take notes, and use your brain. Professor is knowledgable and communicates topics extremely well. Grading felt very fair, and he will give you real feedback which is nice. My only issue was how often classes went over time.
His class is littered with his personal feelings about politics, he goes over time every class, he struggles with technology which degrades his already poor lecture style, and he says hmmmmmmmmm about 500 times a class because he is a poor public speaker. Do not take this class it is not worth your money.
Do not take if you just want an easy business class. Try to find any other professor.
His grading system made absolutely no sense. He said at the end of the class that it would be graded out of a system of 80 points, but ended up randomly grading it out of 100. Discussions were uselss, lectures long with honestly incorrect material.
Petty grader and got too much time on his hands to sit around and write 6 paragraph feedback just on your introduction post. be sure to be EXPLICIT. If you are not EXPLICIT enough he will deduct a petty point. I never had to report a professor to college authorities regarding unfairness on grading, but this time I did.
Started off ok, or at least I thought. If you miss 1 class, you're screwed. He doesn't use any technology all written notes. You need to be proficient in reading gibberish to read his hand writing. When I turned in an assignment on time and he put it as not turned it, I emailed him and he told me I need to turn it in on time, His words = "got it"
Very tough grader. He will take off points for the pettiest of things, you have to make sure you are extremely explicit with your answers. Always gives feedback on assignments, however, it's not really useful feedback as to how you could do better, rather just critique such as "less than satisfactory". Not many assignments so turn in your work.
Be warned, this professor will deduct tons of points for even the smallest details. All his feedback is complete gibberish even when it's 5 paragraphs long. He will not hesitate to criticize you to the point you're thinking "is he even allowed to say this?". The only good thing is all the test questions are on the quizzes so study. DON'T take him.
He gave lots of feedback but he's really hard at grading. I have emailed him about an assignment in the beginning of the course and after the course ended, I still haven't received any reply. He will literally take off your points because of the smallest just because he doesn't like how you say it. I won't recommend him.
Do not take his class! Save yourself from being frustrated and stressed out! Extremely hard grader when it comes to discussion boards, deducted a point off on a introduction post. He also had assignments due during spring break so don't think you will get to relax during that time.
If Karen grading was a thing, this professor would definitely be one of them. Very hard on grading, he also doesn't care about your family emergency, if it's late then your cooked.
Graded very harshly, nitpicked at every single thing. Would lose points at the smallest missing details on discussion boards. Lost points on introductions when it was just introducing yourself and what you would like to be called..
