tough class but awesome teacher and cool as hell.
I agree! Tough class, but great teacher!
Simply put, Dr. Holden is an exemplar of an instructor. Fullerton College is extremely fortunate to have him.
Great Teacher...Have to keep up with the exercises to understand lectures. Very helpful and easy to understand. Very interesting class. One of the best teachers I've ever had. Highly recommend this class and this professor.
He's very helpful and funny too.
If you want to learn something take his course. Yeah he is definitly a hard teacher but highly intelligent. Not an easy A but information will help for life. Make sure to do all the homework.
his class was hard...a bit boring..ok a lot boring. i regret taking this class.
This class was a challenge. If you work hard, you will get a deserving grade. It was interesting and I learned alot. Read the book every night, take really good notes, and ask questions.
awesome teacher. **** buying the book. he tells you whatever you need for the test, hes even better then the book. hell he'll even give you the test to take home. very smart teacher, but be warned the class is hard. easy to get a C, but hard to get anything above it. all other phil teachers suck!!!!
great phil teacher compared to others, sometimes fun, sometimes boring
great
The text is ridiculous, it is sooo boring and impossible to comprehend and Holden doesn't offer much clarity in lectures. He's not helpful, and makes things too difficult and complicated for an "intro" class. If you are not naturally gifted in Philosophy DON'T take Holden. Boring, hard, stressful
Text is near impossible for intro ethics. It is extremely wordy and the readings per night are extremely difficult to complete and both comprehend. In class he dumbs the text down, so as long as you come to class and take good notes you should pass with at least a C. Great instructor difficult class
Your whole grade was based on three tests which were two essay questions... Whole class was based on six questions... had to drop
Loved the teacher, HATED the subject.
I was disappointed with getting a B in this class because I am a good student, I worked hard, and I had a strong interest in the subject. Perhaps avoid if you want straight A's. However, the professor clearly knew his material and had an interest in teaching the subject. The lectures were interesting and fairly clear.
Such a WONDERFUL teacher. The class is very difficult, it takes lots of time and patience to pull an A but it is well worth it. I would def take Dr. Holden again.
Pretty easy class. Never really read the book, just followed the lectures, write a LOT on the tests. THe more the better, a pretty easy A if you can attend class and have good notes.
First off his lectures are incredibly dull and his attitude is cocky and arrogant. The class was ridiculously difficult. The text is next to impossible to understand and his lectures hardly offer any clarity on what you've read. He makes the subject too technical and difficult to apply to real life. He grades very harshly. Awful class.
ok u need the book now! he changed his class due to people not reading. they're 2 point each summaries which add up. GOTTA GET THE BOOK!
So far, so good.. : )

it was so BORING!! Philosophy is something that is very interesting he just makes it soo sooo boring. There is homework due everyday so attendance is a must in this class. He is just so boring!
The worst teacher I have ever had. Horrible personality, and horrible teaching style. Boring, mean, very difficult. DO NOT TAKE HOLDEN.
He knows the material very well and is enthusiastic. He is also very difficult. Don't take him unless you like philosophy or at least plan to try hard in the class. I do my homework and study, and I have an A. It's not impossible. Just do the work. He knows his stuff and is helpful.
This is the social and political philosophy class but I also had Dr. Holden last semester for intro. He is a great teacher, HE KNOWS HIS****. He has no problem answering questions, and in fact encourages you to ask them. He is truely passionate about philosophy and it shows. Don't take it personally if he shoots you down, it's part of the learning
In Intro to Logic, Dr. Holden presents complex means of approaching argument in a simple and concise manner. He is extremely eager to involve students in the process of sussing out the reasoning behind the theories and does a fine job of reviewing assignments in detail. He is very eager to help.
he's a cool guy. philosophy is a very hard subject to grasp but he tries his best to explain it. def take him. i would really recommend taking him over the summer!! no homework just tests for summer school. good teacher, and a nice person.
HOLDEN IS A NERD! His views are dull just like him. Way Too many tests....
Holden is a great teacher! Philosophy is one of those critical thinking out of the box kind of class but he makes it easy to understand from his lectures. my advice would be to attend all the classes and take really good notes for the essay exams, and try not to get frustrated with the books because they suck. awsome teacher, and a nice guy!
boring lectures
Holden's down. He's clear, prompt and cuts right to it. No BS. His class was interesting and insightful, even though it was during summer and we had him for like 5 hrs straight. On the second day a crazy religious girl stood up in front of all 50 of us and screamed and cursed at him. He didn't even lose his cool. Kudos man. Just take GOOD NOTES.
He's a great prof. makes everything easy to understand as long as you pay attention. he makes class pretty interesting with his stories and all. even though you dont read he goes over everything in class and if you dont understand the reading he'll help you understand. as long as you go to class and pay attention it'll be easy.
Pretty easy class.....try's to scare you on the first day.
Dr. Holden is a university-caliber teacher on a community college campus. His passion for philosophy is evident in his wealth of knowledge in it, which he is happy to share with any student who asks. His class reminded me that everything worth believing in is worth questioning. He's a rock to cling to in a sea of abstract thought. A great teacher!
Holden is a great teacher! He explains everything extremely well and he is hilarious but his tests are hard. The whole class is 150 pts and each test is 2 essay questions worth 25 pts each. I thought i wrote a bunch of A papers but they were all C's. The reading is hard but matches with his lectures well. Do not fall behind on the reading!
Holden is one of the most intelligent prof. i've met. Attendence & the textbook are pretty much mandatory to pass the class & he really pushes you to "think out of the box" Make sure you do all the homework assignments. you dont get ne credit for it but HE WILL call on you when going over the answers in class. VERY good prof. pretty hard tests
Dr. Holden will challenge you like no other prof. at the CC lvl. He is a bear in the class room, and WILL make an example of you if you are not prepared. However, he is a very kind helpful person, and will offer any help you need during office hours as well as in class. He will not waste his time with you if you are not willing to do the work.
Really cool guy that is deceptively stern. I thought he was an atheist all semester because he is extremely good at being objective(turns out he's baptist). Just show up, do some reading, and take good notes and your in. Not an easy class but not too difficult. But, you can NOT coast. You will have to pay attention
He is extremely intelligent, teaches the subject well, extremely helpful, and can actually be interesting sometimes. However, he is way to opinionated that it interferes with the learning experience. He is extremely egotistical to the point where I could not listen to him without hating him. However, I still recommend him if you want to learn.
Cynical sarcastic teacher. You can either take his class serious and have a great time, or suffer all semester because you're too lazy to do the work. Your choice.
He is a very intelligent teacher, well spoken, and knows his subject very well. The course was incredibly difficult and extremely demanding. Your grade is based on three tests consisting of two essays each. If your into philosophy and care about that subject, by all means take him. If you want an easy grade, AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!
He is very knowledgeable and smart but man he is hard. His quizzes are easy but he expects really excellent essays on tests. I liked listening to his lecture but since Philosophy was not my major,I wasn't wiling to put too much effort into this class so I dropped it. Stay away if u want an easy class.
Incredible teacher. Probably one of the best on the Fullerton campus. He is highly objective, articulate, and rational. He also challenges every student to master the material. Relatively easy class too if you do the homework every night. You'll find logic an easier subject than expected. I got an A
Super guy; awesome, informative class. There are three essay-based exams, though I didn't find him to be as tough as a grader as everyone makes him out to be. He seriously tells you everything he wants to see and is alwaays willing to help clarify anything. Great if you have at least some interest in the subject...
Great teacher! Wasn't too interested in the subject but gained interest, I encourage attendance if you want a good grade. He's very willing to help even outside of class. Do the reading, even if its after he explains it, that mostly what i did, skimmed before then reread after class. only has 3 essay exams. great teacher and class
Hard class with 4 essay tests, but encourages any questions in class and helps you understand the book when it gets confusing. Very knowledgable and objective in his lectures.
I can´t in good conscious recommend this prof. His grading system fails miserably in gauging who really learns and to what degree, and who just regurgitates info.Lectures are dissappointing and unsatisfying. He´s kurt and difficult to interact with.So many classmates expressed the same sentiments. It´s a shame.Philosophy is exciting and exhilerating.
AMAZING TEACHER! He's great at getting you to understand things. 3 tests 3 essays each. Attendance, only required if you want a good grade.
He is definitely not an easy teacher. You can't get an A by being lazy unless you're somehow crazy smart. I was interested from the beginning, though the material he covers later is different.. My first philosophy class. I'd say there's a lot of memorizing and reading to do. And yea, you need lecture for a good grade :]
avoid! Very biased.Tough grader, likes suck ups who only hold his views. Not what a good philosophy class experience is supposed to be like. Take another teacher.asks you questions every class and will make fun of you openly in front of the whole class if you answer incorrectly. essay reading assignments are extremely boring. Take at another school.
He is not easy so if your a lazy ass college student who only goes to school because mommy and daddy expect you to go dont take his class, actually don't even come to school because your just taking up parking spaces. However, if your serious and want to learn the subject best possible teacher. Best teacher at Fullerton
Good professor, he does a good job of explaining the complex topics. You need the books, but they're small paperbacks. His grading system is difficult. No extra credit, no homework, only exams which consists of two essays. A week prior he will give you a sheet with 6-7 topics and he will choose two to write about the day of.
This teacher is very boring. However he does know his stuff. His grade for the class includes 9 in class essays. You get 7 different topics the test could have on it and you have to choose two and write about those 2. You get one 5x7 note card as well, handwritten.
He teaches his honors intro class like we should already know what he's talking about. I got it in the beginning but as the semester went on he got more and more unclear and hurried because of his multiple absences. I'll never take another philosophy class and I was considering this to be a minor for me. Terrible don't take him!
Dr. Holden is one of the most helpful and intelligent teachers I have encountered. Many reviewers have complained that he is too difficult, or too serious, but philosophy is a serious and difficult subject. To those who are afraid of open ridicule of your beliefs, he only asks that you explain yourself and justify your claims.
often referred to as the anti-hanson. This guy is serious, straight forward and to the point. you will definitely be challenged and hopefully you will be a better person for it.
Holden is a very educated man. He really knows what he's talking about. The class itself is dry: straight up lecturing and he has the type of voice that makes you want to sleep, but go to class, stay awake, and TAKE REALLY GOOD NOTES (a must)!!! took the honors class and got out with a B. all tests are in class essays.
I took him for honors in spring 09. His monotonous voice makes you want to pull out a pillow and sleep. but othwerise hes pretty easy. just do all the assignemnts, come to class, and make your notecard full of notes and your good. i got an A in this class and it was my first honors class.
No hw. just a lot of reading. you're not gonna pass if you don't read. your grade consists of 4 exams. 2 essays for each exam and 3 essays for the final. VERY HARD class! for me at least.
If you dont completely agree with him he is a complete ****... DONT TAKE HIM
No actual assignments, just reading. Plus, there are only 3 exams, which consist of essays. I actually enjoy phil; however, he's rude, his lectures are dry and aren't very helpful. He acts as thought he is a superiour being just because he has a phd. I tried my best, but had to drop at the last minute. ):
hard class because the teacher designed it that way. This teacher actually enjoy torturing smart students. This is probably because he never got a good grade in any of his college courses except for philosophy so that is why he tried to "destroy" all the smart students. I think he has mental problems and needs to consult a psychologist/therapist
Worst teacher ever. He brings people down because he his bitter about his own life. Makes fun of Christians & God. No assignments. Just exams which he can be biased about grading. Unfair grading. Will give kids a bad grade if he does not like you or your views. Should be fired.
He will breakdown everyone's beliefs. His lectures are actually quite enjoyable and I looked forward to attending his class just to listen to him talk about different views. However, his tests are quite difficult. Don't write about your views...that isn't the point of the dam test. Pay attention and prepare your notecard well and this class is easy
He grades hard and he definitely will bring you down. If he doesn't agree with your POV he'll try and destroy it or disprove it.
If you don't read, please don't go to class..ever again. Holden is only hard because people don't put the right amount of effort into understanding his subject. Of philosophy, Holden is the master. If you have a question, he can be intimidating to approach, so do your reading and don't miss class. Be prepared to participate. Demanding but rewarding
Dr. Holden is precisely what a professor (or, any doctor of whatever) should be. This man knows his stuff & is passionate about it (something some Jr College students might be afraid or intimidated by, & so begin to cry) -He is ready & willing take you down if you attempt to spew some nonsense, but in doing so forces to assess your claims & LEARN!!
Professor Holden is one of the greatest professors I have had. It is wise to attend class because he explains any questions you might have about the assigned reading. He can be very opinionated, but if you get far enough into the class you realize that Philosophy is all opinion.
Please ignore all prior comments about him being a "great professor." He is truly the worst teacher I've ever encountered. He does not cover the material, he talks about his personal life w/o relevance, and he spends most of his time humilating his students. He says things like "I don't respect you" and "most of you will fail my class."
I have had Holden for three different classes. Students that do not like him tend to have thin skin. If you attack the material or him be prepared to discuss it clearly and logically. Tests are on the material, don't write about your opinions. After taking other Philosophy professors here I can say he is the least biased and most knowledgeable.
He rarely ever showed, didn't teach the material and required us to practically read and teach ourselves.
holden is a great teacher. he got me passionate about philosophy, he is hard but if you go to his open office hours and build a relationship with him the class get easier.
not for the narrow minded person, be ready to defend your beliefs. hes honest, unbiased, and rarely almost never gives his personal philosophy. if you like philosophy of religion hes a really enjoyable person to talk to if you go to his office.
He's very knowledgeable and willing to teach the teachable. But he has little patience for laziness and isn't interested in babying adults. He's not what some people below portrayed him as. He's a kind man. He really wants his students to do well. But he wont just hand out good grades. You have to earn them. I'm happy I took this class with him.
This is the worst teacher that I have had at this school. Even the open minded will find it hard to get a good grade in this class. He doesn't care about his students. There are no other grades besides essay tests, so if you are not a good essay writer-do not take this class.
poor use of examples-to relate with the text. ur grade is based on ESSAY midterms, cancels class alot! nOT WORTH TAKEING!
Great teacher overall, explained things with extreme clarity however do not take this class is you are a slacker. He makes you work for your grade, grade is based SOLELY on test so study the material! this is my first class that I couldn't get an A in.
Worst teacher I have ever had. He bases your whole grade on 3 essay exams, which I am usually very good at. More than half my class ended up dropping. He expected us to teach ourselves, which isn't good for an Intro class. He should be fired.
Holden is a very nice, funny guy and loves teaching philosophy. I received a B without ever reading the text. He allows a note card for his essay exams which makes them VERY easy. Attend class most of the time, make good note cards, and be a decent writer and you will be fun in this class. Don?t understand why others find the class so hard.
Holden is a nice guy, but I was not a fan of the class or teaching styles. I found this class very difficult and confusing. I studied more for this class this semester than any other class, and still ended up with a C. I would only recommend this class to people with a genuine interest in philosophy.
I loved him! He had excellent teaching techniques. He always took the time to actually connect with the class. Always asked if we had any specific questions and more than willing to provide extra tutoring. Overall, he's a very intellectual guy. Take him for an easy A or B.
nice guy, but for a beginning philosophy, this was pretty difficult. you have to teach yourself, and his lectures are fairly difficult to understand. your entire grade is based off of 3 written tests, but you are given a study guide with the questions and allowed a notecard. he missed class a lot without notice. sucks if its your only class.
Beginning philosophy.... very difficult for me, i thought this was beginner too, had no backround on this so it made it really difficult for me, a lot of terms i had to learn. Reading is a must , you have to read to understand. 3 essays for grade, get to use notecard as well.Class stressed me out the most...not easy stuff, if your not into phil..
Not a great teacher. Basically teach yourself and if you read the book there's no point in going to class. Grade is determined on three in class essays so if your not a strong writer dont take this class.
Prof. Holden is a really great professor. He really makes sure you understand the material. You can bring a 6x8 notecard with you to each test, which is really generous. Attendance isn't mandatory but there's information he shares in lecture that isn't in the text and thats part of what he wants to see on tests. Class is mostly discussion.
Lectures but is entertaining. test he gives 7 questions week before and he will choose two of them. Dont need to put 10 pages just enough to show u know the stuff. 3 test thats your grade. Read the book before or he may pick you to talk. Great teacher recommend him for everyone. He was also absent alot. Good Luck
I had Professor Holden about 7 years ago but never got to write a review. Yes, the class is tough and you MUST read and understand what you are reading. He does not spoon feed but he is an amazing professor who gave me the confidence and skill to get into law school.
Took this class, sounded interesting, not a phil person.Ttough, but learned a lot from Holden. Not a writer, 3 exams with 2 questions each not my thing. Ended up with an A, he's clear about what's on exams, lectures about them and allows notecard...if you read and prepare you will do well. Don't take if you are looking for easy A!
Holden is a very good and very clear teacher. He`s the smartest professor I`ve taken and his lectures are incredibly well presented and organized. He`s easy to understand and answers questions very precisely. The class itself is a bit difficult but the teacher makes it interesting and doable. #1 tip: attend the lectures.
Hands down, favorite teacher at FJC. Had little to no interest in Philosophy, and left with a GREAT interest in it. You have to pay attention, ALWAYS go to class, and take lots of notes. if you do that - you will pass. He's very willing to help you too. Not easy, but highly recommend. You'll actually learn something.
Smartest professor there is. He will answer everything you are unclear about perfectly. Great lectures and nice presentation of ideas. Phil 202 is his favorite class to teach and I can see that through the effort he puts into it. Take him!
I get really good grades and philosophy has always been a big interest of mine. In his lectures I feel like i'm understanding everything he's saying and I go into his essay tests confident and then I never do well on them and I never understand why. The only class i ever didnt do well in at fullerton college.
I personally didn't like him at all. His lectures were very unclear and complicated. I found what we were learning interesting, but hated how he taught it so I had to teach myself. He doesn't email, cancels class often (without notice since he doesn't use the internet) It's not an easy A. I really recommend you get someone else! DON'T TAKE HIM!
So you seriously have to be the worst student to not pass this class. The lectures might be a little boring, but ask questions. Actually READ what he assigns, or at least try to because at the beginning of every class he asks if you didn't understand anything and he will explain kindly. Put detailed notes on your card he lets you use on tests!
Holden is a pretty cool guy. He is quite the character. His class isn't too bad. It's based on 3 in class essays. He allows a notecard for the test and his lectures are alright. Just read the book and you can get a good grade. He cancels class a lot. It made me think a lot and I found the material and text interesting.
If you just want a good grade just summarize the section from the textbook in a notecard for the essays. But he loves philosophy, and is really a good guy.
Absolutely excellent class. It is however very important to understand that this is not an easy A but he allows a notecard for tests so his essay tests are essentially open-book. Very helpful after class and during office hours. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT and you'll ace this class. Dr. Holden is truly an expert and his class is a real opportunity.
Very good teacher, very intense intro class. The teacher expects a lot from his students and is really bothered when no one does the reading. You are graded solely on three essay exams which is stressful, but visiting his office helps. If you genuinely want to learn about philosophy, this is your man. If you just want a grade, go somewhere else.
He's a super cool and knowledgeable teacher, but the material is tough. He gets off topic very easy and you have to really take notes to succeed. He does let you use a notecard on tests, though!
He gives you 5 essay topics which is the study guide 2 of which will be on the final. His essays can be a lot of work, but I realized throughout the course that if you include a lot of examples in your essay then you're guarateed a good grade on the exams. However great teacher and very passionate! He takes attendance every day!!
Mr. Holden, like philosophy itself, has a very controversial teaching style. If he pisses you off, good. If he enlightens you, good. He gets sidetracked often, very much like a philosopher. Mr. Holden is not just a philosophy teacher. Mr. Holden is a Philosopher and a human being.
I visited this page after hearing that Dr. Holden retired. I'm sad that he's gone. Dr. Holden's class was one of the first I took when beginning at FJC and was easily one of the best and most influential. Not an easy course but genuinely great. He's a philosopher and he wants his students to learn to think as such. I wish I could give him thanks.
