He lectured like a high school math teacher, he reviewed a lot, did example problems, and made sure we really understood the material. He's very easy to get ahold of and would help us on assignments instead of sending us to the TAs. I was worried about this class but he made it much simpler and easy to understand.
All quizzes and Data Analysis assignments are online, however the DA assignments take up a very long time, can't do them the night before they are due. However Professor Holland is a very good teacher and if you pay attention and show up to class you'll do just fine.
Professor Holland is a new professor, he used to be a TA but he's pretty good! A lot of other STAT professors are horrible so I'd recommend taking him. He's really nice and cares for his students, so he'll definitely help you if you reach out. The class is pretty hard but he tries to make it easier to understand.
Attendance is 7 percent of your grade. He tries his best to teach everyone, but like, you get lost. Topics move quickly. I had to pay extra for an online thing that can be the same as using excel. I like using excel more, but we had to use stat crunch. There are a total of 4 DA's HW, thats very heavy. Its long af. Exam, ha, yeah you'll fail.
Very Challenging Class. Had to study a lot for an A-. Very nice guy and lots of office hours. Attendance is mandatory. Very hard exams and hardly ever curved. Four very long 'data analysis assignments' and online quizzes. Overall should be pretty easy to get a B or C but near impossible to get an A. Also, not very understanding on due dates. Eh.
The professor was ok Reads off slides Math is not taught by reading off slides To be honest if you want to pass this course I will suggest you just take it online and do it on your own 4 DA projects which do not make sense and multiple choice exams which are long and hard In reality the course itself is not properly structured.
He was just alright, you would have to put in all the hard work yourself.)
Professor Holland is an amazing professor. He is always willing to help on assignments and responds quickly to emails. Class is pretty easy as long as you pay attention in class, show up to class and complete assignments on time.
Professor Holland was a very kind and loving teacher. He respects his students and tries his best to teach the material properly. Personally I feel like Math is a subject that is very difficult to teach and he did the best he could to teach it. He is always available after class and you can email him for assistance on any assignment. He is amazing.
Professor Holland is awesome! Class is a lot of work but he is very helpful and has tons of office hours. If you show up to class and study you'll do great. Recommend!
So, Prof. Holland is a solid STAT 250 choice. I've heard horror stories with other profs but Prof. Holland is great. Attendance is graded so be sure to go (or have a bub lol). I know I really lucked out on point w that. Though I missed a large number of classes, I know going in for lecture is worth it if you actually want to know what you're doing!
The lectures are basically him reading off the powerpoints, it is a waste of time to come to class BUT he takes attendance so you have to be there even if you have to learn the material outside of class because during clas she only reads slides. The course is poorly and it is not taught as an INTRO course, harder than you think for a 200 class.
Prof. Holland seems to know a good deal about statistics, just not how to teach it. He is usually available during his office hours, but that doesn't compensate for his poor instructive methods. He reads off of powerpoint slides which contain way more words than necessary and never works out problems on the white board(which is how you learn math).
Holland is a great professor, but the fact is that this is complicated material for someone like myself who is horrible with math. I would recommend the GTA office hours in addition to class. He makes sure to get some class involvement as well if that's your thing. From what I have heard In comparison to the other 250 professors, hes your choice
It is important to do the practice problems for this class in order to make sure that you fully understand the material. Professor Holland is also a great help if you go to his office hours and there are also TA office hours that you could go to. He also makes you feel very comfortable when asking questions and will not make you feel stupid.
Professor Holland lectures are mainly him reading off the slides, which is a waste of time. You will need to teach yourself everything since he cant teach whatsoever. Don't bother going to his office hours he's very condescending to his students especially to female students. The course isn't properly structured and very hard for a 200 intro class.
He is an ok professor. He will help you during office hours but as someone already said, he reads off of slides and can be condescending sometimes. Also, this class is insanely hard for an intro class. The quizzes and exams are HARD & don't correlate. There is literally a quiz, DA, or test due every week. Points get taken off of DA's for no reason.
Would not take this class. Grading was extremely tough. Assignments did not teach me anything. He reads off the slides therefore I had to teach myself. He was very rude to students for no reason. Wouldnt feel comfortable having him as a teacher. Extremely hard for a intro class. would never recommend him to any of my peers. Terrible experience
Horrific experience. Dont suggest taking course :/
The class consists of 4 exams. 4 long DAs and about 10 quizzes. NOTHING gets dropped. No points are given back. lets say you did not round an answer you get no points back. DA and quizzes do NOT help you for the exams. Exams are not just math questions but a lot of it is based on understanding the material. DONT take this class.
Exams and quizzes are all online. They should be on paper specially the math exams because for solving a problem it takes many steps. Also you dont learn your mistakes this way because the professor can not see what error you did. math should always be on paper. partial credit should be given too. This felt like a online class. would not recommend
If you plan on taking STAT 250, I would highly recommend Mr. Holland. Yes, the exams and Data Analysis projects can both be difficult at times, but I will say that Mr. Holland does prepare you the best he can. Both his notes and in-class examples are helpful when studying outside of class, which is a must because this class is by no means easy.
Class consist of 4 exams 4 DAs and 10 quizzes. Homework is not graded and the quizzes have little correlation to whats on the test. DAs are difficult and time consuming. I recommend going to the TAs for help on the DAs. Be prepared to teach yourself mostly everything, he just reads off the slides.
Show up. Listen when he says "THIS IS ON THE DA". In class practice problems are very helpful, take handwritten notes, not typed. Homework isn't graded, but is so helpful for the quizzes. Tests are conceptual, but quizzes are actually with the numbers. Know how to use formula sheet, and read carefully always. DAs take time, but doable. Decent prof
Went to class didnt pay attention at all. I never studied until the day before the online quizzes or tests were due. thats why I never really understood the concepts fully, just read through the powerpoints memorized how to do problems and when the test came, I just somehow was able to pass. Do you need to show up to pass? I didnt, too early for me
Holland is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He tries to cram so many lessons of Statistics in one class period and will not go over any confusing topics. He does not try to help and will throw a fit if you don't understand anything. I had a family emergency and he did not let me take my test. His office hours are only 30 minutes. Terrible.
Please be warned don't take holland because he is very bad in teaching, has zero patients for the students and he enjoys being very dismissive and rude towards his students. I have never seen a professor so terrible, so be warned.
I thought this class would be like a high school STAT class, because it is a part of MASON CORE, but Mason just makes it way more difficult than it should be. Attendance is mandatory, but I did not learn anything in this class, and the power points do not make any sense at all. Also, the TA's do not help, and finding a tutor is nearly impossible.
This class is definitely challenging. ALL 10 quizzes are open-notes, they are pretty easy as long as you do the practice problems (take pictures if needed). The 4 DA's are somewhat difficult and time consuming for sure. There is A LOT of material covered in every class period. I recommend showing up to class and pay attention to his lectures.
Prof Holland was very laidback and chill, he is serious about you wanting to understand Stat and pass. Although my grade, he was a good professor and helpful if you actually go to him during office hours. He is also pretty funny and likes to crack jokes in class.
Solid prof. Can be a bit sassy at times, but is willing to explain the concepts thoroughly. Participation matters! Assignments can be time consuming but nothing too difficult. Take advantage of the GTAs for DA assignments if you need help (DAs are long but not too difficult). Practice all of the sample problems on Statcrunch youll be good!
Professor Holland was a tough grader and his lectures were sometimes confusing. Many students do not believe attendance needed to be mandatory because 85% of the content was explained in the powerpoints and textbook from blackboard, but he required it anyways. He wasn't horrible but I wouldn't recommend him, either. You have to work hard to pass.
He is a good man, and will help you if you need it. Attendance is graded. There are quite a few assignments, but they arent too difficult if you have listened to it read through the notes. Notes are all discussed in class and PowerPoint is online. Lectures can be a bit drab. 4/5 would recommend
For the exams today are take home online, he wants you to buy a webcam and turn it on while you take the exam, it's very creepy, DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY AT ALL! His lectures are boring, don't make sense, nothing he says will be on the exam, doesn't help the students with anything and very rude.
Holland is probably the best stat250 Professor at GMU. DA assignments are super long. Tests are through respondus, if you dont have a webcam, he will accommodate you. Quizzes have multiple parts to each question. Attendance is mandatory just like every other stats class. Overall A good professor and will answer your questions if you ask in class.
Prof Holland is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He's unwilling to work with people to understand concepts. Attendance is graded but he reads directly off the powerpoint which are surprisingly unhelpful. The DA's are so long and he does NOT help. I went to him for help and he laughed and dismissed me. Makes an already hard class, worse
Prof. Holland teaches like a conspiracy theorist trying to piece together bits of information in a way that might make sense. I've basically had to re-teach myself the entire course. He gives out these papers (Data Analyses) which are quite difficult. He will call you out if you leave early. Unforgiving, unhelpful, don't take the class.
Professor Holland is something else. There is a PANDEMIC, people we know are dying, the university is CLOSED, all classes are ONLINE, & GMU even altered the grading system for leniency! But he made us take an exam the WEEK OF classes returning online, & emails after 3 online lectures passed, saying attendance on blackboard is graded. No respect.
He is just fine. He can be really rude, mean and sassy. Reads directly from ppt but explains the concepts occasionally. does not reply to emails and is not understanding as well. Everything in his class is honor code violation . Quizzes are hard. Tests are based on def and concept rather than math. He doesnt give enough time for DA either :(
NOPE. As a professor, you need to respect your audience. We are not your children. Back off. If you want to treat us as adults, STOP ENFORCING THE HONOR CODE. Mention it and display it once. If violated, we face the consequences as adults. As a teacher, be more approachable. No leniency even after the transition to online classes because of C-19.
Professor Holland is quit annoying. I couldn't stand his voice on online lectures at all. He reads over power points and honestly the examples he gives just confuses you even more. He's like a dictator, even though he knows most people don't care about stats at all, he teaches like we love stats. He was not helpful at all during Corona.
idk why people are complaining about the DAs, webcam for exams, etc. These are set by the department-all STAT 250 students have to do it regardless of prof. The content is difficult!!you have to ask for help and put a lot of time/effort to do well. Holland explains well, responds to emails quickly, gives tips to help on DAs & exam, nice & respectful
If youre unfortunate enough to get Holland don't take a class right after. I got points off when I stayed the whole class and left 5 minutes after time. He's an ex high school teacher and still acts like one. God forbid you get up to use the bathroom, he might publicly remind you that its an honor code violation to leave after taking attendance.
I dont know what all the bad comments are about the professor. The DA's are very easy and literally take 2 hours to do. The exams are easier than the quizzes but I recommend using stat crunch for the quizzes. This class really isnt bad at all, he explains everything really well and gives good examples just pay attention in lecture.
Not the move.
Consists of 10 open note quizzes, 3 exams, 4 data analysis assignments, 1 cumulative final and attendance is graded. He goes through material very fast and the class becomes difficult very fast. He's very nit-picky and would post notes that were empty or missing information (Whats the point??!). He does respond to emails fast. Had to teach myself.
I took stat last year and failed so bad I didn't even bother taking the final. I did have to work MUCH harder than I did before but I was able to pass this time around. He had a lot to do with helping me pass but you WILL have to put in the work. Can't blame him for the pace or structure he's just following instructions but he truly cares for you.
Prior to the COVID Pandemic shutting down our school, I really liked Prof. Holland. However, after school closed, he was never considerate or understanding of the new life circumstances students had. He completely disregarded student family or work commitments. All of my other professors almost instantly made accommodations, except for him.
This class moves very fast and Professor Holland is a decent teacher (not amazing but not horrible), but I needed to find a tutor outside the class. But he does not care for his students at all. I needed extra time because my mom died and all he said was: that's life. I would not recommend taking this class with him. He does not care about students
He's okay, but I had to basically teach myself. The class itself is challenging. You have to put in a lot of work for a good grade. A lot of material is covered every class. The DA's can take very long. Do the practice problems for the quizzes! The exams are easier than the quizzes. Not my most favorite class tho.
I honestly thought material wise it wasn't hard but math and science come easy to me. I did self teach through the textbook and practice problems since I fell asleep in class. Honestly if it doesn't come that easy seek help because he is ruthless and mean about it. Don't wait to start the DAs late either they are not hard to complete.
This guy really cares about his students. Hes very passionate when teaching and it really makes what would be a boring class enjoyable. He really isnt given the credit he deserves, I was having trouble with a DA and he really made an effort to help me. Hes definitely one of the more personable professors.
Do not take Mike. He does not care if there is a pandemic going on in the worst and makes things more challenging than they should be honestly. Also his lectures are painfully annoying because of his voice. Honestly prior to the virus situation he was fine but this really showed his lack of compassion.
This class was very challenging, weekly quizzes, 4 DA assignments that were tough to complete. He is very heavy on honor code so be super careful he will never let you forget it. Not very helpful when you don't understand so you need to teach yourself. Attendance is mandatory and he's strict on it. Try taking someone else more understanding.
Unless you love Stat DO NOT take Holland. Tons of work, no slack, even during pandemic, and dictator about attendance. Would never recc him to anyone who isn't in love with Stat. I tries my ass off and even with help from Stat majors I only landed a 77. You will regret taking him unless you want the most stressful and difficult class of your career
Mr. Holland does not represent the core values of GMU. Due to Covid-19, said he will no longer be taking attendance and will post videos of the lectures online for us to review. Two weeks later, reneged initial statement and declared virtual classes mandatory and that he will be docking points to those that missed the previous two weeks of classes.
Not a good choice.
Makes think way more difficult than they should be for a intro to stats class. Not worth at all. Just don't, trust there are way better profs out there.
This class is tough in general. I took this class Spring 2020 and if you take him in person, just know that he also grades attendance. Make sure to get an 85 or above on the DA's and do good on the quizzes and you'll pass the class. DA's weigh more than the exams. Can be kinda rude sometimes. Try your best & attend the lectures or you'll be lost!
Professor Holland was pretty good. He taught in a way where it makes sense in a class that is somewhat challenging. He records the recitations and walkthroughs for us to go back to in case we forget or miss during the pandemic. Overall, he is a good professor.
HE IS AWESOME A REAL GEM. Professors like him are so rare. HE actually cares for us students. All the negative people have no idea and took him for granted. Really cool guy. SHOW HIM RESPECT.
Great guy
Prof. Holland is one of the most helpful math teachers I have ever had. Math is not my strong suit, but Prof. Holland is super helpful when you are confused with the material. Has recitation and office hours 4/5 days a week and everything is recorded. He genuinely cares for his students and helps makes the difficult material easier to understand.
This class was difficult and the content was very heavy. There are 4 Data Analysis assignments; the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. The teacher assist. guides us to wrong answers and I could no longer use them for help. Even if we do get help from Prof. Holland, he was not very clear on what to do. This was a very time consuming class.
Weird guy. Heard bad things about him. Did not answer all emails when I had questions. Says willing to help students, but definitely does not go above and beyond like other professors. Gets off topic talking about his cat. Lectures are not very helpful. Already took stats in high school, but this class was very different with little help.
Prof. Holland is good since he is always willing to help you and gives you lots of choices for it. He explain topics clearly. Although, he takes more than time than he should to explain the topics, but he is very friendly and patient with his students. Would take this prof again. His emails are encouraging too. Lots of homework tho
I had Professor Holland for 250 and he's the only reason I finished above a b in that class. The material is hard, but the practice problems are just like the test and I have never had a prof more willing to help you if you go to office hours.
He is the worst Professor at GMU. If you wanna pass the class dont take it with him he is that bad. So many assignments and if you cheat he will put on academic integrity.
Statistics is difficult for most regardless of the professor, math is not my strong suit, but to understand the material (yes it is a lot) I believe the best chance is with Professor Holland. He explains each step thoroughly and knows multiple ways to solve. Genuinely a mathematician. If you can't follow the honor code don't blame the professor.
He is NOT flexible nor is he an easy grader. I regret taking his class.
Worst Prof at GMU he is wired and he is really a tough grader don't take him if you want to pass the class.
He made this class so difficult. He posted 3 hour lectures every day and if you didn't watch the whole thing you wouldn't be able to understand any of the material. He is overall just a bad teacher, couldn't help you with any problem because he would talk himself in circles. Do not take this class if you value your time.
hard grader with lectures that are even harder to follow. sends out emails weekly that are lengthly /overwhelming. emails are upbeat about pushing through the semester but he crushes your hopes of doing well with every assignment he grades. lecture are like 3 hours + multiple times a week, super unorganized, talks in circles take somethin else
Professor Holland is a nice guy and very helpful during office hours. However, the way the class is organized, at least virtually, sets you up to fail. The only way you'll be able to understand the material is by going to recitation hours, which take 4+ hours to watch. Tests, quizzes, and DAs are nothing alike, so it's hard to grasp the material.
Worst professor at Mason. The class itself is great, I truly enjoyed the material. Holland made the class more difficult than it needed to be. Talks about students to other students, although identity it kept anonymous, positive things are not shares. If you go to GTA hours for help, they are great!
one of the hardest teachers 10000%. he made the class 20 times more difficult than it already is. he would record several 3-4 hour lectures per week and expect us to watch them to understand the material. it was impossible to do other school work with this class. he grades very harshly as well, especially on the data analysis assignments.
He's a good guy and cares about the subject but its too much work. spent so many hours on this class and never had time for any other class. offers no extra credit. alot of info in lectures but goes way too fast. four DA's, three exams, one final exam, a quiz each week as well as at least four sections of homework (20 q's each section) each week.
Only really took this class because I took Stats in my senior year of high school, and therefore thought it would be an easy class since I had experience. But that is not the case. The class is very hard and he gives a bunch of work for you to do every week. Also very not understanding when it comes to personal issues. Overall would not take it.
there's a lot of work but it's not his fault. every stats class has the same workload. but he is a caring prof that genuinely seems to want his students to pass. Definitely helped me out when i was struggling with some topics but still can be a tough grader. if you want to pass, I feel like holland is the best choice.
I was confused why he had such mixed reviews until I took the course. Holland isn't a bad professor, but the class as a whole was messy. A lot of homework every week plus a quiz, tests weren't terribly difficult, but data analysis assignments made up for it. Overall, if you will commit to showing up, the class is okay; if you miss you're screwed.
Prof. Holland is awesome best at GMU! He really cares about you succeeding and takes the time to go over everything in lecture. He's available for all questions in/out of office hours. You have to put in the effort and go to class. The bad ratings are from students who didn't show up for class and try. Lot's of opportunity for extra credit also.
Loved his class!! He has some strict rules and class is assignment heavy. However, the work is easy, and professor is always available to help. He is a good, upbeat guy that makes class fun and enjoyable. I recommend taking his stats class if you need a quantitative reasoning credit.
The lack of care this professor expressed throughout the semester was mind-blowing. I am an A-student and every time I emailed him I felt he was just in a bad mood overall because he always came off as rude or arrogant towards me for asking things. He failed to upload needed documents and his 'Data Analysis Assignments' are long and tedious.
Avoid him on a heavy semester. Holland has a tendency to "question-shame", and does not give very good feedback on his Data Analysis Assignments, he just marks things wrong with out clear explanation. Exams are fair though, nothing is out of the ordinary or a surprise on his exams, and they were all multiple choice. Be ready for A LOT of homework.
Loved this Professor. He is so sweet and has great lectures. I have a learning disability yet his lectures are so organized and detailed I did somewhat well in this class. Only complaint is the data analysis IMO they need to be shortened cause its excessive. Lots of homework and quiz every week. Dont be afraid to ask for help tho hes super nice
I understand the bad reviews to some extent, but I found his class to not be nearly as difficult as some say that it is. Make sure you stay ahead of the data analysis assignments, and the walkthrough videos he posts with them help a lot if you get stuck. The exams are sorta tough, however they don't require you to do many calculations by hand.
This professor is the worse, couldnt care less about his students, he forget to post his lectures on time and sometimes he forget to post the announcement and then if you forget something, that will be on you. His exams are though, and most of the questions are outside of his lectures, which makes it more difficult to have decent score on the exAm
A lot of homework, quizzes, and projects. The workload is a lot that you will forget to do your other work for other classes. I once ask for help, but he told me that he can't help and I have to figure it out on my own. You can't even ask for other people for help because you can get honor coded for that. Overall, don't take his class. Avoid him.
Professor had a tendency to 'Question shame' students who had questions about assignments. It wasn't very appropriate, especially towards his own students as a college professor. Missing a few classes will make you fall behind. He's an EXTREMELY tough grader and is not lenient with grading.
This prof is really tough grader. and doesn't about his students at all. DO NOT TAKE HIM if you want to pass
Dr. Holland combines his expertise in mathematics/Statistics with an excellent, articulate teaching approach. Contrary to other dubious reviews, Dr. Holland is one of the most accessible and down-to-earth professors you can have. This is a work-intensive course. Dr. Holland guides you through every step for you to succeed. Highly recommended!
The professor himself isn't too bad, he's laid back and cares about stats. However, the coursework is too much, making the semester incredibly stressful and leaving little to no time for me to work on things for other classes. The DA assignments are overly long and tedious, and the instructions are sometimes confusing and vague. Overall, avoid him.
Statistics 250 is a very hard and challenging class, and it is the first time students have to combine mathematics with context and the first time students will have to interpret results. It seems like most of the concerns about the professor tend to exist not because of any fault of his teaching, but because of the natural difficulty of the class.
Professor Holland is a great and caring professor. He invests a lot of time to help his students and his enthusiasm about Statistics rubs off onto his students. If you simply stay on top of things (attend lectures, do assignments in a timely manner, etc) his course is quite simple. Do not be scared by the negative reviews.
This has got to be one of the worst professors to take. He dosent do the grading himself like a teacher would and expects you to do that xtra job. He gives 3 big assignments that will practically determine your grade, and he is a petty grader in them. Also, he assigns way too much hw that was due every week, very easy to fail the class.
Great in terms of teaching, willingness to help, and personality. He is an enthusiastic and approachable teacher. One thing I will say though is that he is difficult to reach on email: if you have something urgent make sure to do it in person. His class is quite easy as well (literally just listen in class: I didn't study too much and did well)
He has a lot of bad reveiws on here but he is a great professor you just have to be willing to give him a chance if your doing bad and don't seek out help ASAP he will get mad vs when you do, he is so caring and kind and he knows some ASL
Honestly hated this class. Boring lectures. BUT it wasn't the worst. Holland isn't too generous about extensions so just hope you don't have a life altering even happen. DA's are time consuming but not too hard. Only issue are the tests, which sometimes include stuff that wasn't on the HW or quizzes. Posts slideshows, so use those. Not terrible.
Awesome professor in terms of teaching and helping students, he truly cares about you passing the course. This class is doable if you are willing to put the work in. Definitely attend his office hours because he will help you understand the homework and DA assignments which make up a majority of the grade.
This class is what you make it to be. If you attend office hours and ask questions, you should be fine. Professor Holland will answer your Qs on the data analysis assignments, which take a while. Tests are hard but if you study, you should be fine.
Dr. Holland is a good professor. He is very passionate about statistics and is very respectful. Lectures are boring, but it is statistics so it makes sense. Be prepared to devote at least 8-10 hours a week outside of class to this course. graded on DAs, tests, online problems, and quizzes, so lots of ways to improve your grade. Show up to class!!!
If you miss class, you will essentially fail. He goes over a LARGE amount of material in one lecture and you won't make that up. If you space the homework as intended, you'll have about an hour of homework after every single class. He is very clear on what you need to know, but taking notes is impossible because he talks and lectures too quickly.
The class is centered around his unfathomably boring lectures, so if you zone out or miss class you will fall far behind. Most of this class also centers around 3 huge assignments, 3 exams, and weekly homework assignments. For one, I would avoid him altogether, but avoid this course in general if your workload is already heavy.
This course has the most insanely boring lectures you'll ever attend, but if you don't go you will fail. Additionally, the entire course is based around 3 huge assignments with 3 exams and a ton of homework. I would altogether avoid him if you can but also avoid this course in general if you have a heavy workload.
This teacher isn't a tough grader, he doesn't give too much homework, and the tests aren't that bad. The only problem is he's kinda boring. It's hard to pay attention because he's just talking and talking, no time for class discussions or anything like that. Also the slides are sometimes filled with too much recap. Overall, not a bad professor.
Professor Holland tells you exactly what assignments you need to do in the syllabus. There is no extra credit, but he does curve the grade to give students the opportunity to earn over 100 on some assignments. Lectures can be a little difficult to follow. He responds to emails and is helpful whenever you ask.
Listen guys, this class is designed to be difficult but the professor is teaching nice. I learned a lot from this class but the class is hard so be prepared to study a bit more and focus more on what he teaches during the class. Thatz it.
Be sure to take his class in person to maximize your potential to understand the content. Due to his class sizes he will never know a students current "grade or standing" in the course. If your struggle, he will legit give you the answers for the homework's/assignments. He can almost teach to a wall, so be sure to ask questions to remain engaged.
He is very knowledgeable about statistics. I am a statistics major and I took him my first semester of my freshman year. He is very clear about the material, and I never struggled with it. There is a lot of homework though. There are online problems/quizzes, and 3 DA assignments that are not hard, but take lots of hours to finish.
Stat 250 is a tough class, regardless of who teaches it. Holland is a nice professor, I'd recommend taking him for this class if you want to take stats to knock out the math requirement.
stats is difficult no matter who you have as a professor. i think holland is probably the best stat professor at gmu but that isn't saying much. do the work, attend class, go to office hours and you should be okay. weekly problems, quizzes, and 3 difficult exams make up your grade so get ready to study
I took this class for my minor asynchronously and I actually learned R & SAS more than l learned C and Python for my engineering classes. I liked the structure of the class- weekly labs, hw, open book quizzes with an open book midterm and final. The only issue I had was waiting 1.5 months to see my midterm grade when finals are 1 week away.
The difficulty rating is more of a reflection of the class than the professor. He goes fast and the only way to get everything down is to look at the slides. TAs can grade harshly, but he will hear your case. He is also accessible outside of class and willing to help. Class is in-person almost no matter what. Attendance is worth extra credit.
Im a very math focused person but he was by far the worst. Tough grader and attendance is used as extra credit towards the end of the semester and I had to leave early (last 5 min of class before the check in) for a medical EMERGENCY and he called me out in front of the whole lecture hall and accused me of skipping. Very rude and condescending
The hardest part about this class is that there is a lot of homework consistently and when the R projects come around it can get a little overwhelming. I struggled a lot because I did not take stat 1 at GMU so learning R proved to be more difficult than I had thought. Good instructor of statistics, but does not make it very palatable for non-majors
Awful
Just do all the homework and turn in quizzes and DA on time. The homework's and DA help you study for the exam. He goes way to fast with his lectures and it seems he over bloat's to fill in class runtime. Whoever grades the DA assignments is pretty harsh with grading. He's a pretty enthusiastic guy, but its hard to pay attention to the lectures.
He was a decent professor but it was just the course that was hard. Go to his office hours for help on the DA but sometimes his comments make you feel bad for not knowing the answers. I fell asleep in class & I am not a stats major but was still able to earn an A since I studied a lot and went to his office hours.
Extra credit is given for attendance (get it!!) Quizzes/homework aren't too difficult (for a good overall grade, do your best). The data analysis assignments are very difficult and take time (and graded harshly.) Prof. Holland is a bit intimidating at times. Start off on the right foot and you will be ok. You have to attend lecture to succeed.
Overall a great professor. You'll have to actually go to class to do well but his lectures were easy to follow along since he posts the slides. The weekly assignments weren't too difficult, aligned with the notes so easy grade boosters. The DA assignments are more tedious but if you follow the instructions and work on them ahead they're okay.
Very nice and understanding guy if you put in work to show up to lecture and do your work. The poor rating has a lot to due with the individual, and not the professor. Does not tolerate skipping, cheating, or disrespect. If you talk to him, he will listen. TAs gave me good marks. DA assignments take 5-10 hours. Be prepared to spend time on the HW.
Bro, the lectures will make you want to cry. You end up teaching yourself because the slides are your only source of hope for comprehending anything. Slides and google are my new religion. The attendance is 5% extra credit (not regular attendance grade) so show up anyway, you'll need it.
All STAT250 classes are hard, so get ready to actually work. Professor Holland does his best to explain concepts well and between him and the TA's there is always someone willing to help. START YOUR DA'S EARLY, DO NOT WAIT! There are online problems and quizzes almost each week and 3 exams. This class requires work, but is manageable.
the lectures were so boring and if u zone out once it will just snowball and you will be confused for the rest of the course. lots of online problems and quizzes. 3 data analysis assignments -- try not to procrastinate like i did. the work never ends. i can't wait for this class to be done. lord help me i don't know what's going on
He wasn't very understanding of student issues and would get annoyed when asked questions
Overall Stat-250 was a hard class expect to receive weekly online problems and online quizzes that aren't necessarily hard but do take time to complete especially the data analysis. Prof Holland overall was a bad professor his lectures felt rushed, when asking a good question he always made it seem that it was your fault for not paying attention.
The professor is nice although a bit patronizing at times. Every week 20-30 pages reading, online practice problems. quizzes after every chapter. 3 Data Analysis assignments which are really time consuming. Don't fall behind on the reading!!!! Prepare to do a lot of work outside of class. Not an easy A but overall a very well structured class.
He's only a good professor if you can pay attention to him... which is practically impossible. I think I learned more reading than actually being in his class. He's a bit short-tempered, but he knows what he is teaching. For the LOVE OF GOD if you take this class, don't expect to have any social life when the Data Analysis Assignments are assigned.
He is a nice professor. He replies to emails very quickly. We have three Data Analysis Assignments; they are very straightforward and easy to complete if you understand the concepts well. After completing the assignments, email him, and he will thoroughly review your work, point out any mistakes, and provide feedback on how to fix them.
STAT250 can be tough, but Professor Holland's clear lectures and approachable office hours make it manageable. Use Unstuck ai alongside the textbook for efficient study prep.
I appreciated Professor Holland utilizing the textbook and basing his lectures off of it. It made it convenient and easy to learn both in class and outside. Attitude was definitely and issue and I certainly had points where I felt uncomfortable. Overall good professor and I learned a lot! (Just study hard and do your reading)
He was nice if you went in for office hours in person, but he had an attitude in other environments (online office hours/in class). Lots of homework and bi-weekly quizzes. 3 data assignments that weren't too hard but took a lot of time. Ask him to check over parts of it for you over email. If you put in time and take good notes you'll be okay.
THE BEST professor for STAT250, stats is gonna be a hard class regardless. As long as you do the bare minimum that he explains in the syllabus ON DAY ONE you'll be fine. Treat it as a class you study for every week.
very good would like to suceed in this course
He's a pretty good teacher, very clear and enthusiastic about the material. You will more or less be fine if you do the online problems and the Data Analysis assignments ahead of time. Statistics is more tedious/time-consuming than downright difficult, and this guy does his best to make the material digestible.
not very empathetic - I did most of the big assignments wrong and didn't notice bc I thought it was an easy grade. spent hours on them to redo them and explained my situation but he didn't care. as long as you do well on the data analyses you'll be fine. he's smart and passionate about the class. very easy to calculate your grade.
Professor Holland's lectures were easy to understand. Everything you learn is on the presentations. Additionally, he responds quick with emails, he may be harsh sounding, but he is still lenient and will help you if you need. Attendance does matter, but it is beneficial. (He tells you some exam questions).
not happy in this course did not learn anything unsure if I did well or not no good
If you have him online focus because otherwise the online problems and DA's would be very difficult. He makes review sheets for exams that are actually really helpful in prepping which most profs wouldn't do. This is actually my second time taking stat 250. So glad I got a prof like him who's very nice and great at teachingl. Def recommend.
Showed up to class finished and submitting all the work did not do well or was able to obtain knowledge from stat tried to learn and get help exams and quizzes were difficult with amount of effort studying help wasn't that great he's a great guy but not a great professor and the GAs did not help at all and not even the free online tutors sorry.
I took Prof. Holland online and his class wasn't so bad compared to his previous negative reviews. He can be harsh but he's very easy-going with the lecture and HW. There's a lot of hw and quizzes, but they are manageable. His study guides were very useful his exams! Overall, I enjoyed his class :D
Professor Holland makes statistics easy to understand and is happy to help as long as you're respectful. He loves when students visit his office hours, he gives answers away, and you leave understanding more. This class will take up a lot of your time. Utilize every resource offered — TA, office hours and knack, they're there for a reason.
Very easy professor never payed attention in class but learned through the online assignments. Tests aren't hard if you just review the studyguide. Only thing is make sure to do data analysis at least a week in advance (they aren't hard just very lengthy and tedious). Overall very nice proffesor just do the work, the complaints aren't justified.
Professor Holland is honestly really good at conveying the content in his lectures. The course content in general was pretty confusing and difficult for me, so I had a bit of a hard time, but I can tell he tries to emphasize understanding through examples, demos, etc. His slides are also well-detailed and reading them really helped me understand!
He's okay when it comes to the lectures, he really enjoys teaching STATS, but the tests are difficult and if you want a good grade you'll need to study *a lot* Attendance is done every class but you can have up to 5 absences & you do not do ANY group projects Class is typically in a big lecture hall
Very lecture heavy, but does not just read off of the slides. He makes an effort to walk student's through practice problems on a separate, viewable document, and often posts his own lecture notes after each module. Would definitely recommend his class if you are new to statistics and need a more patients, clear-cut teaching style.
if you take this class, might as well sign up for asynchronous because it literally doesn't matter if its a in-person class or online, you still will have to teach yourself.
Mr.Holland is a great and enthusiastic professor. He really tries to go through everything step by step, provides many examples, repeats things over and over again, gives test question hints beforehand, etc. He truly does everything he can for u to pass, but tests r quite hard and are greatly concept/process based so u really gotta know ur stuff.
Class is easier than AP stats cuz it doesn't go over experimental design, chi-squares, and very little probability. Chill guy who teaches well & gives enough materials to study. Exams all mcq, so if you study, then questions are easy, or easy to process of elimination. Gives biweekly set of homework and max I got was 6, so no heavy workload
Professor Holland was a good professor for a core class requirement. He seems interested in statistics and wants students to succeed. Exams were more difficult than I expected but if possible take this course online. Going in person doesn't seem super beneficial if you have some background knowledge about statistics. He is a safe bet as a professor
