Great teacher! He is really into the subject of politics and he just loves the stuff. I recommend using him for any course you take in politcs at SCC. Real easy to understand, replys to your emails quickly! AA++
Great class - Hoover really taught well.
Great teacher! I could always get into contact with him! Always responded to my emails & he’s was always in his office for me to talk to him. Very organized teacher & went by the syllabus very closely so I knew what was due.
Very enthusiastic teacher. Covers all walks of information and incoporates opinion and class discussion daily. Tests can be a little tough but overall he is a very good professor.
SCC's only Poly-Sci professor. Difficult, but Poly-Sci is. Made wide use of computer material and video learning. Difficult grader. Many objectives. Tests are all 100 questions (not easy). I Still recomend.
Tests are very difficult. READ the study guide and the chapters before tests. He's a very enthusiastic teacher though. Has good lectures and a funny sense of humor. Political Science is difficult for sure. There is TOO much material on the tests.
he's a very passionate teacher. lectures are interesting and he is easy to contact. one main gripe however, tests contain TOO much material. I mean the study guide is HUGE. There are 5-6 chapters over each test. Each chapter has over 50 questions! geez.
He loves his politics, thats for sure. Very enthusiastic and intelligent. Thankfully, he dosen't take sides (liberal or conservative). He lets you decide that. Not an easy class though. Tests are tough. There is a lot of material to go over. Recommended.
SUPER TEACHER! Just study the student guide for the class for the tests and you will do great!
unorganized and never available in his office on fridays
I am an honors student and let me tell you, the tests are very hard. I might still get a B in the class, but that is only because the papers help you cover up somewhat for your horrible test scores. He's a great teacher, but needs to lessen the material.
A tree hugging liberal who teaches with a major bias. His tests are not relevant to the material in the book, and his lectures-doesn't get more pointless than that. All he does is sip Dr. Pepper and laugh at his own jokes-while no one else laughs.
A very enthusiastic teacher. Great lectures and fun class. The only problem with the class are the tests (i.e. they are pretty difficult). Thankfully, they aren't worth that much. Do good on the papers, e-discussions, and extra credit to get at least a B.
Prof Hoover really knows his stuff. He can lecture for hours picking out dates and examples w/ out ever looking at notes. The class fun was. His grading system is fair, but tests are difficult. Wait till you see the material packet! I still reccommend.
DO NOT take this class over the summer. He is an excellent teacher, definitely knows his stuff... just entirely too much material to learn over the 6 week course.
He's a very good teacher, but the material in this class can be overwheliming, especially is you are a full time student. There is sooooo much to grasp and learn in this course. I still recommend, but only with a light schedule.
I found Dr. Hoover to be very interesting and non-biased. He was clear about assignments and only tested on the material on the test study guide. I learned a lot, but watch out for the Article Reviews -- they're killers, and he grades them hard.
Hoover's passionate about his politics. He is does not express partisan bias and gives great lectures. Hard class to get an A, but also hard to fail. Read a lot. The course material packet is huge, so beware. I reccommend overall.
pompous agenda-pushing liberal who thinks he's oh so funny. avoid his class at all costs.
I have taken two of his courses at the SCC main campus and I truly enjoyed them both!! Hs is a really good teacher who really has much experience in political science. Brings many interesting topics to the table to be discussed. AA++ teacher!
Very interesting class. Hoover is SCC's only poly-sci teacher so your stuck with him. Luckily he's a very good teacher. Very intelligent and class lectures are fun. A lot of work, but necessary. Totally recommend.
The guy is a genius. He can get a little off topic sometimes and notes don't help on test. Study the guide. Its verbatum to the test. Liberal dosent show to much in class. A lot of work. Easy to pass but barely gives A's. Alot of C's and B's. I still recommend. He is a great intellectual.
Don't take this class!
Dr Hoover is a great instructor, but the class is very hard especially if a student does not like politics.
This class is really hard. Make sure you do well on all the work that is due throughout the course because you are going to need all the credit for it. The test are very hard.
Most of the comments are right - he is hard. He only asks of you what you want to get out of the class. make sure you READ & study HARD!! follow the syllabus! I should've put more time into this, even though it was boring. you have to work for your grade. don't take him unless you can work - HARD!
Its hard to rate Hoover. He is one of the more brilliant minds and the class is interesting, but in-class lectures and notes are not clearly put on the test. Do the HUGE study guides to study for the test which are pretty difficult. Not the easiest grader or class. Hard to get an A. Still reccommend
Dr. Hoover does not have his online class organized. Maybe he is putting on more than he could chew, otherwise study and you will have no trouble getting a good grade, and best of all, you will learn useful things in his class.
Professor Hoover was great! Interesting lectures, very engaging. Follow the syllabus and USE THE STUDY GUIDE. Reading the textbook first then listening to the lectures puts things in perspective. Very little of the in-class notes helped with the Study Guide.
Dr. Hoover’s tests were a little hard but he was an excellent teacher. Was always available for me to get into contact with him if I ever needed anything. He really likes political science & gives us so much info on politics!! Make sure to read and study the book, especially with the study guide!
Super easy. Just read the book and you will be fine. No need for hard-core studying. I took the Summer A class, missed 5 days and STILL got a very good grade (even though I can't STAND politics and never studied for the tests)! Hoover is VERY laid back. Take him with confidence!!!
Another left-winger who still can’t get over the 2000 election. Follow the study guide and the class should be a piece of cake. Class was good but the professor is a bleeding-heart liberal so conservatives beware.
This professor knows a lot about politics and is a very good teacher, for his class do all the work required which is very important and do the study guide to review for the test and u will be fine.
Seems like a real nice guy who knows what he's talking about. Grading is very fair. He's a little liberal for my taste but still a great teacher.
boring
No Comments
very knowledgeable professor. extremely broad exams (covers 5 chapters). keep up with the study guide, attend class religiously and make A's on the written assignments & you should do find in the class. his classes can be boring at times, he likes to show videos. he's funny when hes not trying to be & laughts at own jokes.overall, great professor.
Exams are a little tough because they cover a lot. Lectures and handouts are good. Knows his stuff and presents all sides of arguments equally ost of the time. Take notes, read, do the work = good grade. Fair and willing to help or sometimes allow a 2nd chance.
Very boring class. He is very liberal and often biased. Tests are difficult but the papers are not too bad. Videos are awful.
the nice thing i can say is he does know his subject. i hated every moment in class! lectures were boring, videos sucked, tests were darn near impossible, and he has a way of making you feel inferior. unfortunately he is the ONLY prof that teaches this class. good luck! i'd try valencia next time for any pol science class.
Dr. Hoover was a good teacher. I took two of his classes and his tests were a little hard. If you keep up with the study guide he gives, you should do fine. Even if you don't do so great on the tests, there are plenty of other assignments to keep your grade up. Videos were old and somewhat outdated, but he tells you that ahead of time.
He definately knows his stuff. Hes a bit arrogant and is one of those pompous thinks his Sh!* dosn't stink kinda professors who is a godsend to politics and SCC.
Professor Hoover is a great teacher. He is hard, This is no show up went you want, He dosent play that . Lots of home wrk if you do your homework and read read and do the projects you should be fine.
He is a hard teacher; watch the syllabus. The two tests really really hard; but there are a lot of assigments to get points in other way.
He's ok, the only prof. who teaches the POS & GOV classes so you don't really have a choice. I just wanted to give him a "hotness" rating since I thought he was rather cute...
He knows his****, and does give both sides of every arguement, however he does slant left. Tests and such are hard, lectures are boring as hell but a good teacher.
Easy class but lots of reading and really tough exams.
He was an okay professor, I didn't get much of it so he was kind of hard to follow...but the homework wasn't too bad and even though the tests were really hard and I didn't do very good on them I got a B in the class. He's really picky though on everything being right on the papers you write so pay attention to detail. :)
He's hard, but fair. I thought his lectures were amusing. The tests are tricky, you really have to study and read the book to pass them. He had several written assignments, but they were short, one page papers so those were pretty easy.
I took three class with Prof. Hoover. The assignments are easy once you know exactly what he wants. His lectures are amusing, get him started taking about Starbucks see how long it lasts. His tests are all m/c. You can get a A on his exams if you do the study guide questions. 75% of those questions are the exam. Have a question just talk to him.
This teacher is awesome! He has a wonderful sense of humor and has good taste in music. His tests are somewhat difficult and be prepared to use webct.
This course contains too much material to be offered on-line. The tests were not based on practice test questions like Mr. Hoover said. You must have a complete understanding of government BEFORE taking this course.
Rude. 100% online, when you emailed a question, it would be days before he got back to you. He expected you to know everything. Removed discussion from the discussion board, also once a test was done he removes the grade and all. You have no clue of your grade during the class. If you don't want help take class, otherwise don't take this class.
Professor Hoover is a very smart man, and he knows exactly what he is talking about. If you are looking for a B.S. class do not take this one. I was not thrilled that I had to take this class, and I did struggle in the beginning with the test, but you need to do the study guide he gives you AND the online quizes that go with the book, ended w/ a B
Prof Hoover is an ok prof, he is a little relaxed but you must turn in your work. the tests are a bit hard although they're multiple choice. You have to study. The discussions are somewhat intresting. There isn't that many prof offering this course. Just do the work and you'll be fine.
I took this class online and as long as you can articulate your thoughts well enough to write a few short papers, you will do fine. his tests are a bit difficult if govt is not your thing but he always seems to give extra points on every test given. he also provides extra credit helps a lot i even went to his office once and he was polite helpful
I really loved this guy - He's an excellent professor, extremely intelligent and knows exactly what he's talking about. He likes discussions and thus makes the class interesting - but you have to be interested in the subject otherwise you'll just be bored. Tests are kinda hard and he grades paper a bit harsh but he gives a lot of EC so it makes up
I expected this class to be very fun and dinamic but it was rather dissapointing not only because how useless and hard to understand the text book is, but also because the professor's lectures have little to no relation to the content seen in his tests. He will be very political during class, even when not required.
Definitly one of the good guys. Tests are hard even when you study. He is indeed a charming fellow and captivating speaker. Through animated dissertations, he teaches thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Hopefully he will continue to change the world through his gifts of knowledge and empowerment.
A brilliant man and a gifted speaker. He can stray from info that will be on the test during lectures at times, but it mostly contributes to a complete understanding of the subject. The tests are hard, and some of the questions/readings for online required discussion forum seemed primed or biased in favor of his own political views.
great speaker n hear to truly teach. brings a complete understanding, but strays from test material. do the chapter reviews, n you'll be perfectly fine
Political Ideology class is absolutely impossible to succeed in. had this professor for US FED GOV, and loved him. But this class is impossible. Lectures are fascinating, the subject is truly a necessity for politics fans, but DON'T take it! Quizzes are fill in the blank, and complete memorization, I spent 9 hours on a chapter.Got a 60 on quiz. ARG
Mr. Hoover cares about his subject, but he uses the classroom as a bully pulpit. His argument constantly changes-one week he compared Mike Huckabee to a communist, then said "we need to look at economics from the perspective of Karl Marx". The class is not an open forum. You must always agree; and if you question anything, expect to be belittled.
Hoover is an erudite teacher with a scope of knowledge concerning political science that is hardly matched. Through enlivened oratory he brings clarity to a much muddled subject. Nonetheless, be ready to take weekly quizzes that test your ability to find and know ideosyncratic details on political philosophers. Besides that, it is smooth sailing.
Make sure you complete all of the online discussion comments needed. Stay current with reading and be able to analyze what you've read. Dr. Hoover really understands political theory. He does expect work out of his students and enjoys discussing students' thoughts and ideas. Getting an A is possible with some work.
Online SummerA:follow the following to do well:Login everyday, respond to posts even when you're done with the quota.Use study guide, read it thoroughly with summary, memorize, have pages for tests. Do these things then you wont need to watch the videos or read book. He's VERY fair.If he challenges you, take it as a challenge n fight back with dignity.
I signed up for this class online. I had a few questions about the class, and I tried to e-mail him, and his e-mail kept bouncing back. I then called him and left several voice mails. I waited a week to hear back from him. He NEVER returned my calls. Needless to say, I dropped the class. Useless.
Do not take the online version. He seems to think you are less if you are taking an online class, at least that's how it seems from his replies. He won't admit mistakes if pointed out, unless it is pointed out by the majority of the class and he will make you feel less for making your own mistakes. Lots of work to pass the tests, so be prepared.
Good speaker, hard class. Lots of notes. Heavy book use. Too much material scattered online. Campus courses require a great bit of online work. mandatory discussion posts and all exams online. However, the exams are 75 questions in an hour and are really hard no matter how much you study. Never heard of anyone getting an A. Lots of people cheat tho
I took him online. He gives 4 impossible-to-ace tests, 2 papers and 5 discussions. We only had one chance to make any real extra credit. I wouldnt no recommend him at all. He is difficult
Dr. Hoover is a very passionate teacher. His exams ARE in incredibly difficult though. The utilizes the text book quite a lot. I received an A (and didn't cheat, like the previous person posted) but I made it a point to use the study guides that he provided, and answered each question to review before the test. Study groups will be your savior!
Interesting and informative lectures, relatively easy assignments. Tests were moderately easy as long as you read the chapters and studied the notes. He has some study guides online and they were extremely useful for studying for the tests. I enjoyed the class overall. I would take him again.
not too difficult of a teacher, class topics do not relate at all to the tests so be sure to do the study guide before each test, takes a few hrs but 95% of it comes from that study guide, guy def. knows his stuff but gets off topic really easily and often over-explains things
Hmm Hoover... He is an alright teacher... Hard class, really hard test. 4 test, a report thing, few online discussions and one other thing i missed, but the big things are the test. Test are real hard and you have to study for them. I like the guy, nice guy but the class is not so nice. If you have to,goodluck, but overall not too bad, nice teacher.
I just completed this class online for summer and heres the lowdown. READ the syllabus/course content, he answers 99% of questions you have. READ the chapters, use the given study guide for notes, it helps! He says in syllabus to email him via ANGEL only and he does answer so ignore previous posters. Do all work! Be an adult, hes not a babysitter.
funny and great professor he can explain anything that's hard to understand. test and quiz are done online (lifesaver)! overall easy class and very informative
Grading structure is confusing. He will make comments on assignments and then be unavailable to explain. For a professor to be unavailable the entire weekend to email correspondence during an online class is ludicrous. Make sure you study all the course material, a large portion of the tests do not come from the textbook.
I am still attending but considering dropping. The tests are the worst part of this online course. The 75 questions must be answered in 90 minutes. The readings are based on the professors interpretation of the way the answer should read. You have must choose. There are also a questions that are double negative worded questions. BE CAREFUL!

He is unclear. His grading changes mid-cycle and isn't reflected in the syllabus. When you question him on it, he gives vague responses that make you think he's making it up as he goes. He's not very personable, either. He doesn't respond to questions over the weekend. The material is easy enough, but his instruction complicates it.
Whatever you do, not take a class from Prof Hoover. I have a 3.8 GPA and am almost ready to graduate. I have never taken from a worse professor in my academic career. He doesn't respond to emails, he doesn't teach you anything, you have to teach yourself, and his tests are ridiculously difficult. Please run the other way!!
Please do not take a class from Professor Hoover. He is the worse teacher. A matter of fact he teaches you nothing, gives you hard test, and doesn't answer emails for his online classes. Don't waste you time. You will not do well in his class. He doesn't explain anything. Just trust me and take someone else!!
Do NOT take this class!! The exams are brutal!!! I read the chapters several times and the material on the test was either too difficult to understand or not relevant to the book at all. I have no issues with the Professor, but I think this course is ridiculous. I am an A student and I'm struggling for a C in this class. Disappointed.
It is true Dr. Hoover is not easy. He expects you to put forth college level effort. This IS college after all. In each of his lectures he touches every subject covered in the text. I have never had a hard time communicating with him, either after class or by email. He is very helpful, IF you show him you're putting in the work.
Do yourself a favor and find another professor. Unless you feel like studying 40 videos, 5 chapters, and 35 handouts for one test. 75 questions. This guy is ridiculous.
Going into this class I was excited to learn more politics in depth, but this professor is extreme with his 75 question exams. Class material says one thing and then when you take the exam its another. Not good if you are looking to maintain a 4.0 GPA. This guy is tough and not neutral with his liberal leading articles. Run the other way!!
I didn't like is that the third test online wasn't showing up so I asked him about 4 times if he could post up the test so I could actually take the test and he said he would but never did so he had never given me the time to actually take the test and I would have passed the class even if I had failed the test because of the point system.
Honestly he was an okay professor. Not big on technology and kind of a hippie. He does grade fairly, and the online tests are easy as long as you read the book. Don't take the readings lightly, it will come back to bite you in the end.
I have never taken time out to rate a professor but I thought I would give you my 2 cents. I went into this class expecting the worse but it wasn't that bad!! I took it online for B term. He post a lot of material, handouts, videos but you really need to read the text, that is the key. He is fair and if you study you can get an A. I did.
Mr. Hoover struck me as a little extreme the first few classes, comes off as a bit of a hippie. He mellowed over the course of the semester. Not a hard class but not an easy A. Exams are open book, that was the only time I used the book
The tests were hard, be prepared for a 75 question test over 3 chapters that you MUST read. The study guide and practice quizzes are available but they don't help at all. You will not pass this class without reading the book. His lectures and power points are interesting but don't help either. E.C. is available and very NECESSARY.
His rules are set in stone. His lectures are interesting and detailed. Everything you need to know is in them. Notes on the board AND he reiterate them for the class. Take notes on BOTH. He is strict but a good teacher. You will NEED the book, indefinitely. His tests are huge, but are only on what he goes over in class. Great teacher.
Quiz and Exam questions aren't clear at all. When taking the exam and quizzes you will need a dictionary at hand. You won't have enough time to double check your answers. He claims it's okay to e-mail him if you didn't understand a question however he's always right So don't even bother Extra Credit assignments don't bother it doesn't raise percent
Professor Hoover made a class - 2 actually - that I thought would be a nightmares into a classes where I learned so much. He turned out to be one of the most inspirational and intelligent people I've ever known. If you're ready to challenge yourself, to work and to learn the truth, I'd strongly suggest taking one of his courses! Toatl A++
I feel this was a class in law school not an entry level college class. Some of the quiz and exam questions were not covered in the book. The study notes he suggested did not help much. His e-readings were very cryptic and did not really give you a question to answer with the 300 required words for ea one. I will never take one his classes again.
I am actually taking his online class right now, I am a disability student and he is very helpful though he may forget to set extra time if you remind him he will remember after a couple of times. Check your work everyday!!!!!
Professor Hoover's class was so confusing. His lectures were based off of power points he made he said were taken from the book and they weren't. Going to class was pointless, the lectures were not helpful so note taking was useless. We would't finish chapters so half the stuff on quizzes we didn't cover and they weren't in power points either.
I am taking his online class now and his exams and quizzes are ridiculous! I swear he purposely wrote confusing questions. I used his study guide for every chapter and it barely helped. I'm used to getting A's in most classes and I'm struggling to get a B. The information is easy to understand, but his questions are worded in a way to confuse you.
I took his class online and I regret it entirely. His advice and criteria is very cryptic for response papers; there isn't really a question to answer. His videos don't always load and they aren't much help to begin with. His feedback for assignments don't explain what you could do to improve and are overall useless.
His study guides are out of date and he admitted to it. Plus they have almost zero relevance to whats actually on the test. If I didn't have the book I would've failed every one of the exams.
Got an A but his online quizzes/tests often included things that weren't in the book and questions could sometimes be poorly worded. You might have a hard time if you're not majoring in Political Science.
he has a syllabus that he goes by, you can only turn things in once . one time i missed the deadline of an exam because i was out of town and he didn't let me retake it.
Very good teacher. You really do have to read in order to pass the course. It's basically college so they aren't going to "baby you," therefore it's tough. Extra credit saved my grade. Just expect to be on top of things and don't be afraid to communicate; professor DOES help if you need it!
I took him as part of Honors Political Theory. He's pretty chill. Try to engage in the conversation, you'll get more out of the class.
The tests are very hard
Not a fan of this professor. His exams and quizzes are chocked full of trick questions or topics that were not covered in class or in the readings. The "response papers" are his way of making you feel like an idiot and that your opinion is wrong. The lectures are boring and seem to just drone on...
Taking this course online and I am not a fan of it. I am use to getting A's and I am struggling to get a B. Exams are very difficult, seems like he put a lot of trick questions or things not even covered. His powerpoints are not very helpful, neither are the study guide. His feedback on response papers don't always make sense. I wouldn't retake him
I took this class online and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. This will be my first B. The chapter quizzes are relatively easy, although worded poorly. The response papers have no question to be answered, but he will still dock you critically. His responses are very difficult to understand. The tests have information that is not covered.
A little boring but honestly it covers important topics about politics that are relevant. The assignments are mostly quizzes based on the chapters from the textbook. If you prepare for them, you'll do fine. The response papers are tricky though.
This government class was alright. Originally, I loved government in high school but this class made me not like it so much. I had to do 4 papers that didnt really have prompts to it but is graded semiharsh. There is many many quizzes and tests. Thats pretty much it. I dont think the Professor is bad just expected it to be better.
Quizzes are fairly easy if you read the chapter, they are very obtuse in their wording however so read carefully. Response papers are frustrating with no blueprint on what the Professor is actually looking for. Little feedback on papers, but a tough grader. Unit Exams are crammed with obscure questions so create a study guide. Do the work, get an A
I took his class online, and it was the worst decision I've ever made. Both his tests and his papers are so vague in their wording it's hard to make any sense of it. He grades harshly too. I'm so glad that I can withdraw and take this class with a different teacher for free; I thought I was going to be stuck with him. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Overall, very nice man, knows his subject, fairly moderate. However, the "response papers" we had to do were horrible. The articles to respond to were dense and uninteresting, and he gave no one in the class a full score once. The mean score kept dropping as we realized a full score was hopeless. A lot of opportunity for extra credit, though.
