When I took HRM1101 with Kate Nelson, it was co-taught with Michael Houldin as well when Nelson had to go on leave for surgery. Houldin is a really awesome guy, and gives enjoyable lectures. HW and Assignments are really easy, Tests can be a challenge, and the group project really isn't that bad at all. I got a B+ but put very little effort in.
Houldin structures this class pretty easy. 4 in-class essays, he'll put a bunch of topics on the board and tell you to write about two, worth 50pts each. 2 tests (NO FINAL), worth 50pts each. Then a group presentation worth 100pts. He does care about attendance, but if you have something going on, he'll always excuse you - just let him know. Easy.
great teacher! All the exams based of power points. he loves bringing in current controversial events so it kept class interesting. He loves a student who participates and brings their own insight. Gave some really good tips on negotiating job offers. in class essays, but their fairly short (400-500 words) and opinion based. would take again
Worst ethics professor. Journalism major in college. Half of each quiz asks about random names he talks about in class from his 100 slide powerpoints. Grades each paper like a journalism major, regardless of how much you demonstrate your knowledge of the material taught in class. GPA will drop in a class that should be an easy A. Avoid him
He was an easy professor. Exams are from the pps, word for word. He grades you a bit heavily on in-class essay. He goes crazy on the final presentation. But he's a nice guy. class is also great with the stuff he teaches you. But definitely prepare well for the final presentation. He really nitpicks you. But put in the work, Easy A
Really nice guy. His lectures were based off of relevant experience and he seems passionate about what he is teaching. He grades the essays a tough, but if you double check your spelling and grammar you will be okay. The quizzes were directly from lectures so it is important to attend class.
Everything else was pretty easy, but participation and final project was matter. In the final project, professor became a picky person. Also, even though I participated all canvas discussion, attended all classes, and asked at least one question per class, I got 88 out of 100. It changed my grade from A to A- with only 0.11 points differences.
Prof Houldin was an amazing professor! There are 3 tests and 3 essays, which are easy if you take good notes on his power points. There is also a group project at the end of the semester which was easy as well. Go to class, take good notes and you will receive a good grade.
very good teacher. lectures are never boring because he ties in current events. makes it very easy to participate b/c there are no wrong answers. you could even say something way off but he'll figure out a way to tie it into the topic. no tests/final. only 3 300 word MAX essays, 6 quizzes and 1 easy group proj on a topic of ur choice.
Loved this class and professor ! 6 quizzes taken exactly from powerpoints. 2 short 300 word write ups, a 500 word write up, and a group project. Final is just a 400 word write up addressing the prompt he gives. Discussion based but enjoyable if you don't mind speaking up
One of the best professors at Temple! Lecture heavy classes but the topics discussed are always interesting. A few quizzes/essays and a group project, if you do the work and participate in class you'll get an A.
He should increase his expectations of students to improve the learning experience (make it more challenging). However, he gives excellent feedback on papers and is very down to earth. Hes got a great personality and is very humble. Very easy class, short papers, easy quizzes. Why should students be required to pay for this class? Its nearly useless
An excellent professor. The course was easy and he made everything fun and connected to the students very well. Open note quizzes, easy assignments, and clear understanding of the teachings. Definitely recommend his class.
Professor Houldin is one of my favorite professors I have had this semester. He's very kind and always has a fun story to tell the class. The only issue I had with this class is that the woman who grades the assignments for him is a VERY harsh grader. There are only 3 big assignments per semester but her grading really effected my overall grade.
Great professor. Engaging within class, has loads of experience, overall made class enjoyable. HRM1101 is easy with him as long as you put in at least some effort.
Overall, an easy class with a cool professor. Open note/book quizzes and tests and only 3 assignments. The textbook can be found online for free and the assignments are easy if you put in the effort. He uses fun examples in class and explains concepts well.
Great guy, class was easy, tests are open book highly recommend
Love this man. He's the coolest and he keeps his lectures relevant to topics you will love to learn about. This course is easy too, always open-note tests and quizzes. I will miss this course, I learned a lot!
This is a very easy class. Quizzes every other week or so and four exams. There are three assignments but the graders for Houldin's class do not leave enough feedback and sometimes their comments do not make sense. Love everything about this class except the grading on the assignments.
One of the best classes Ive taken this semester. His lectures are always interesting. He is so relatable and tries to make class fun. Such a down to earth man, honestly so sweet. His work is pretty light if you put in some effort but the people who grade the work grade weird which is a pain. Will definitely miss this class and Houldin!
Super great guy! Tries to engage students in as much conversation as possible! all exams based on PowerPoint, had 3 projects due throughout semester and just had weekly chapter quizzes to do before class as homework! Just pay attention and do your work and you'll be fine!
great professor, you have 3 major projects the whole semester plus a quiz a week on the textbook reading, VERY easy A if you keep up which is very easy to do. keeps students engaged well during lectures, tries to interact as well as he can with the students with everything online. understanding, overall a very nice guy and good professor
Good use of current events, weekly quizzes, four exams, and three "papers." Daily participation points required. Very entertaining speaker and clearly cares about the content of the class.
There were discussions, not only on the topics he taught but also stuff we wanted to chime in. He was very nice and funny. The only bad thing I have to say about this course under his instruction was the grader. She wouldn't provide feedback on your mistakes and when she did they were simply incoherent and wrong (says 'strive' wasn't a word, etc.)
Hands down one of the top profs at Temple.
Professor Houldin is a very nice man and wants his students to pass. He is a caring guy and gives effective lectures.
This class was so easy. The assignments are graded tough but everything else is so easy. Take this class for the easy A
This class was an easy A. 4 open note exams straight from the power-points, 8 quizzes (open note) material from textbook. I will say some of the TA's are really tough graders. I got a 90 on one project but a 78 on the other one. Kind of annoying but make sure you put effort into those projects! :)
Houldin is one of the best professors at Fox, TAKE HIM! It was an in-person class and there were 4 exams, 8 quizzes, and 3 assignments. All pretty straight up if you just listen/read. There is no final. His lectures are so amazing and engaging and he gives great feedback. Just try and participate.
I loved Professor Houldin. Class had five exams (Quizlets online, just Google), a group presentation, and a VERY easy final. Went through very timely examples during class and always left time during class to discuss personal opinions. Grades the presentation a little harsh, but fair. Make sure you participate in class and on the discussion board.
The best professor that I have had. Professor Houldin has an amazing personality and incorporates his own experiences into his lectures. Be ready to write/type a lot of notes though and be ready to do it quickly. He usually gets all the information out before the scheduled lecture end and let's you out whenever you're done with the in-class exams
Very easy class, his lectures are an hour and 20 minutes and he talks a lot about why and how business' do so well. Homeworks and projects are easy so far, he makes class fun by understanding how college kids operate. He's a very good guy and has good morals, if only all classes were ran the way professor Houldin runs them.
Very funny and talks to you like an adult, not like you're a kid. Gives very good advice and always keeps your attention.
My favorite professor, he made me love this course, and always keeps you engaged with the material. Just pay attention and study the slides and you will pass all the exams. I enjoyed the projects, and wanted to participate because he actually cares about what you have to say. 10/10 recommend him, very funny and nice guy.
Nice guy, easy class. Quizzes every other week on specifically textbook readings. The exams are purely from his lecture slides. Grades he gives are vague on the homework. You will get an A if you do everything on time and watch his (recorded) lectures to study. He does online polls during lecture as the class participation, so try not to skip. ;)
Amazing professor, one of my fav. 8 quizzes (open note), 4 exams, no final, exams are exactly like powerpoints, 3 research/ interview assignments very easy. Only need book for quizzes. Makes class so interesting and keeps you engaged. Exams take like 8 min. Easiest class ever. participation is through polls. Very flexible and lets you make up quiz
GOAT, best professor at Temple.
buddy mad lit aint finna front bro the da goat
could see myself cracking a cold one with him
Professor Houldin is such an interesting and amazing person. He is always willing to listen to you, and makes participation fun. He's also a very good storyteller. He tells stories in a way that will draw your attention or even make you laugh at times. Also, the class is very easy. It's just 8 open note quizzes, 3 assignments, and 4 easy exams.
Professor Houldin really knows what he's talking about. Despite having a classroom full of at least a 100 students, he somehow manages to keep the class interesting and engaging. All of the quizzes in the class are open book and can be taken from anywhere anytime before the due date. The tests and writing assignments are generally easy.
Professor Houldin is a great professor. He engages large classes, provides good presentations and has straight forward exams. I recommend going to his class if your serious about a business career, he has great advice and personal stories.
He's the man, open book quizzes outside of class, 4 tests and no finals, and only 3 projects. Every test was based off the slides which he posted, and the projects weren't bad, but the TA and student graders made no sense sometimes with their comments. If you're looking for an easy class with good advice, take Houldin.
I recommend everyone take Houldin. He's a good guy, and you can tell that he cares about the material and teaching. He does his best to keep the lectures interesting, but sometimes the material is pure common sense. This is a very easy class, and he bases the tests on the slideshows.
If you need to take this course, Houldin is the professor to take. He is very entertaining in his lectures and grades very fair. The workload is easy and small and exams are 50 questions all multiple choice. This class is an easy A or B and he is a phenomenal professor.
Funny, down to earth, and has interesting lectures. He's very understanding and sympathetic if you have anything personal going on or a DRS. Definitely take him if you can! Do the in class polls they get graded. Only annoying part was the TA's who grade your three projects do a lazy job.
Houldin's a great professor for an easy required course for Fox students. Everything's graded by the TA's since it's such a big class but if you sit in front he's always around to chat after class and gives great career development advice. Just show up most of the time (you will get a participation grade) and do ur assignments and you'll get an A.
Professor houldin is the best professor in Fox school of business I just wish I should've took him later on the day like 10am and up. I would recommend this professor because if you serious about business this is the right professor to take for that, love this class.
He is a great professor for this class. If you go to class and pay somewhat attention to the lectures you will pass easily. Attendance and discussion boards are weighted heavily so learn from my mistakes and make sure to take the short time to do the posts to get an A.
Amazing and engaging lectures, he really gets you excited about the class. Quizzes once a week and questions come directly out of the textbook. Exams are taken directly from lecture powerpoints. As long as you do the work and study the powerpoints youll do well. 3 assignments throughout the semester and grading on those are a little ambiguous.
Exams are really simple and I barely studied but participation wrecked my grade. Rule is that you cannot miss more than 3 classes, must respond on discussion board, and be active in class. I only missed 3 classes, responded to every discussion board post but got an 80 for participation just because I did not really raise my hand. PARTICIPATE!!!
5 non-cumulative exams, easy weekly quizzes (material from the textbook), a few assignments, and participation. Overall, it was an easy course that the professor taught well. My only complaint was that the grading on assignments (which is done by TAs) was a little inconsistent.
Oh my goodness! Professor Houldin's class was the absolute best of my freshman year! The class was held in a large lecture hall in the lowest level of Alter, maybe 200 students, and he did his absolute best to give great feedback and attention to all his students! Mainly quiz based, quizzes were open book, tests were not. I would take again, yes!
This is the funniest man alive. Not only are his lectures interesting, but he actively tries engaging you in a meaningful discussion. This will help you learn and promote intuitive thought. He remembered my name in a class of 270 and is generally interesting and really funny. I would 100% recommend him.
tbh he will quickly become your favorite professor. its like a quiz once a week, 3 assignments which are interesting, and the exams are pretty easy which only happen every few weeks. just go to his lectures and you pass easy.
Houldin is such a clear-minded professor. So knowledgable and clear of what he talks about. Exams are pretty straightforward and the quizzes are so easy. 4 assignments throughout the semester, they take some time, but pretty easy. Also makes lecture fun and exciting. Definitely recommend taking him. You won't regret it.
W prof. Though sometimes other profs grade your assignment and they grade really strict.
Ngl he was a tuff professor. Easy quizzes just use the textbooks. Attendance is taken, but there is no final. 4 assignments that take a little time but youll be cool.
Mike was really an amazing professor that tried to make every lecture fun and also really engaging. Participation matters, through polls, and he also discusses what happens in the textbooks in class and usually shows up on tests. Just show up to class and tests will be easy, and no final. The assignments are also really easy takes like 3 hours max.
Very easy class with a humorous teacher. One of my favorites. Made class worth coming to.
For a class of 250+ people, Professor Houldin knows what he is doing. His exams are a breeze. The "hardest" part about this class is the homework assignments since they take more time. In general, he is a great guy to know!
Class was very boring, but easy. Grading was pretty unfair for some assignments.
course is easy, test are annoying because he puts random specific stats, incredibly boring class to sit through, but there is no final and quizzes are incredibly easy. i would say take it w houldin because it is easy, but he is very egotistical and lacks empathy so don't expect to have a great student-professor relationship.
The best professor ever.
By far one of the best professors I had this semester. He is very knowledgable about what he is teaching. Class is fairly easy, lectures are simple and easy to understand. Only gave 3 assignments the whole semester, a quiz every week but it is open book, exams are also easy if you just read over the PowerPoints.
The lectures are pretty boring, but they honestly weren't that bad. There are three projects that he lets you know about at the beginning of the course, as well as three exams. For the projects, follow the rubric carefully and you will be fine. For the exams, just look over the powerpoints and few times.
Professor Houldin made the class actually interesting. He's a sweet man with great lectures!! Take him if you can!!!
Possibly the best professor in the entire human resources department. This guy is super hilarious and genuinely cares about all his students. This is a class that I would never want to miss, you learn so much more than the corporate world. Just do your work, study, and this course is a no brainer.
super easy lol
Very good professor. Not much homework. There were alot of exams. but they were easy. Good person and easily reachable. Understands your situation and don't be afraid to reach out to him.
This guy is legit the best teacher. You can tell he isn't just a professor and has actually partook in the business world. He is very caring and just an overall amazing guy. He gives super easy weekly quiz which takes me 6 minutes to complete (all control + F the textbook). He gives 3 or 4 HW assignments which are slightly long but relatively easy
Very good professor
Professor Houldin was very nice and give you chances to make up for missed exams quizzes. There are no final in his class and all of the exams are exactly like the slides. Overall, a very interesting class and good professor.
He was funny, always helped everyone, and gave second chances, The class overall was very easy as long as you took notes and paid attention. I would 100% recommend him
Very easy class if you go to it. All quizzes are open note. Only 4 assignments all year. Very good class + lectures and taking it made me want to switch my major to HRM. 100% recommend.
Amazing professor! Exams are easy, just take notes and review his slides. Exam questions come directly from his slides!
There were only 3 assignments for the whole year that weren't too hard if you put in a little effort, 8 take-home quizzes, and an exam that was straightforward if you paid attention in class or reviewed his slides.
TAKE HIM!!!
had prf. Petrucci, worst class ever, switched to Houldin and actually enjoyed class. keeps thing entertaining, he does cold class but just to hear others opinions and thoughts. Only 3 assignments all course. Exams are easy if you studys the slides. quizzes are open book. actually wants his students to pass/enjoy class.
Professor Houldin is a super easy professor. His lectures are funny and he makes class enjoyable. Attendance is mandatory though and missing a bunch of classes can def bring your grade down. There were only about 3 exams for the semester and all were super easy if you just showed up and listened, not much studying was required.
literally take him if you can, easy class and you actually learn
Too subjective.
One of the best professor I ever had at Temple. He's very nice and caring, give people a lot of chances to do well in his class. The class content is really interesting. His quizzes and exams are very easy and as long as you study the slides, you will do well.
If you just talked to him he is super understanding. He lets you turn anything late. There is no final exam which is really nice. Just make sure to replay to the discussion boards at the end of class.
Enlightened, humorous, and wise teacher. It's not a difficult course, but you can learn how to deal with troubles in the workplace, very practical! Take his class and get an A, that's it.
This professor is hands down one of the best professors at temple! If you want to learn any business course whether it's Econ, leadership or ethics make sure it's with him. His way of explaining is so easy and he is very engaging with his students. Overall a very good communicator and a very good professor
This is literally the best professor at temple. hes so nice and understanding and makes everything so easy. exams are so so easy and he just sets a small 400 word essay every so often and a 100 word diusucsiion board. this guy is so good you won't regret taking him, easy A
He was a great professor, he helped out when there were questions. Everyone in the class wanted to participate and had a good attitude toward the class, the papers weren't hard, and there was minimal homework, but when there was homework it took time to do it. Mostly at home quizzes and exams are in person but not too challenging.
Professor Houldin is an incredible educator and mentor. His wealth of personal experience in the workforce makes him an invaluable resource, offering practical guidance on what to do—and what to avoid—in professional settings.
-Hard grader - comes off as passive aggressive -Use sarcasm a lot - don't ask for extra credit because he won't give it to you.
I 100% recommend Professor Houldin. His lectures are very interactive and he is always open to hearing new ideas. He does cold call if nobody raises their hands, but doesn't make you feel stupid if you don't know. Not too much work outside of class and it's pretty easy. Slightly tough grading essays but if you do all the work you'll be fine.
Super nice guy - he just wants you to participate. Mandatory attendance, three 600-word essays, some canvas quizzes, and five in-person multiple choice exams based on specific stuff discussed in lectures. Lots of T/F questions. Very easy coursework but you still learn some fun stuff about HR practices and some business history trivia. Take him!!
Don't understand how he grades assignments. No rubric whatsoever. Also, every class would somehow go back to him expressing his political opinions. very unnecessary
This man is a fantastic professor. Most of his lectures are honestly interesting. He genuinely cares about his students and is always willing to help them. The class is relatively easy. I recommend this class for all business students because it is way better than the alternatives.
Super chill professor! He is so cool, and his lectures are very engaging. He gives personal anecdotes that make you really listen and gives some good insight to the social aspects of business. There are three assignments that are pretty simple if you put the effort in took about 2 hours total on each. His essays are based on the lectures in class.
an easy class and he's super chill. he even remembers my name in a hall lecture!! 5 mcq exams, no final. everything comes from the slides just pay attention to the examples and numbers. attendance is mandatory but you can skip 3 classes. the only downside is his vague feedback on the writing assignments, only the first one has a rubric
I LOVE THIS CLASS. I've never had a more engaging, entertaining, and informative professor. Emails back fast, caring, understanding of life circumstances. Attend class, PARTICIPATE, take notes, and you will have an A. Easy to pay attention, 5 exams all MC, no final, 3 essays-600 words. Made corporate life a lot more interesting, good storyteller.
