he gives an insane amount of reading. Does not follow the syllabus at all, tends to make stuff up as the class progresses. He goes off topic a little bit but is very interested in what we have to say. He assigns a lot of blog writing but doubt he ever checks it.
EASY class! Supposed to blog 3xs a week, but seems like he stops reading them a few weeks into semester. Brings in guest speakers. Had one quiz on all the readings, which was generic and easy. Really nice, helpful guy. Lots of group work.
Huber is a nice person but assigns confusing assignments, is unclear about due dates and NEVER answers his emails. He assigns blog writing but never gives grades. I dont believe he checks anything. DOesnt really teach anything either... My advice is just do everything he ask and dont expect him to reply back via email to help!
Oy vey! Nice guy, but VERY confusing with what he expects, and does not really teach much.
Huber knows his material inside and out and was interested in the class doing well, and he'll get pissed if he thinks you're blowing it off. It was a night course, so thank god he wasn't a snooze like lots of professors here.
AJRL475 Topics in Journalism: Social Media Took this class with two friends and we loved it. Huber works fulltime at the Times Union newspaper and he brings current events into class. It's one of the few journalism classes where the material was totally current and helpful. He wasn't arrogant like some teachers here.
Just got my grade. A. Yeah baby!!!! Prof Huber makes you do a lot of work on your own , but if you have half a brain, it''s not hard. I learned a lot and the class was fun. It's the only course I took that gave me real skills. No textbook to buy. Nice.
One of the best professors I had at UAlbany. Hes very helpful and will give you good feedback. Do your work and show that you care and he'll give you a good grade.
Group projects early in the semester. Individual work later on. The code wasn't easy, but I think this course prepared me for life after college. We built online portfolios that helped me with job interviews. Practical stuff. Good advice. Good guy who cares about his students.
The best journalism class at UAlbany!!! I didn't want to take it but it was required. Now I know why. I learned more than I ever thought I would and I can definitely use what he taught in my career. Treated us like adults. He let me meet up to get extra help. Cares about the students and doesn't act pompous like so many professors at Albany.
huber is not the best at sticking to the syllabus but that ended up being a good thing he taught me things that no other professor took the time out to do and no book ever could he stresses how much he wants ALL his students to do good so he can be a bit critical of your work hes family oriented guy and considers his students family :)
Huber cares about the work you put in, but more than that, he cares about his students. He stresses hard work because he really believes that his students are capable of producing good work. He treats students like adults, which some people don't like. Most importantly, if you're having issues with anything, he will do everything he can to help you
Prof. Huber knows his students very well. He clued me in to an internship that could lead to my dream job in May. Get to know him. It will be the best thing this department does for you.
Huber is one of the best professors I've had the pleasure of learning from. As the comments said below, he genuinely cares about his students and believes that they will have a future if they can push themselves. Huber is the man. Cheers professor! You deserve it!
I liked this class! Learned a ton. Smart guy. You don't need to know computer code. He teaches it as if you're working for an online magazine, so you build websites from news stories. Late in the semester, we built online portfolios to show our work and get a job, maybe . ;-) Already used it on my grad school admission!!
Huber is awesome. He gives fun assignments. We created online magazines, shot and produced video, built websites and online portfolios (I still use mine). He cares about us and he wants us to take pride in our work. You can tell he cares. Not a hard grader, just don't blow off homework or skip class. Good teacher. Funny guy in class.
Professor Huber is one of my favorite professors in the Journalism program at UAlbany. He is always willing to stay after class to help you with a project, and he is such a nice guy. I learned valuable skills like taking video, building an online portfolio, websites. Take his class! You will not regret it.
Huber gives LOTS of work. Assignments arrive a day or so before they're due and are not listed on the syllabus. He also doesn't give concrete feedback- no Blackboard use, no letter grades, he'll maybe tell you you did okay. That made it really difficult for me to know what he wanted. He says "this is what it's going to be like in the REAL WORLD."
Professor Huber works at a newspaper fulltime and he brings his experience into the classroom. He's flexible with assignments and he likes it when students seem to care about their work. He helped me with my writing and was quick to offer extra help when I needed it.
Huber is great. He taught us how to build web sites, create graphics and maps. For our final project, we bought our own domain names and built online portfolios. I have my own web site now. Coolest project I made in my four years here. He's easy-going and stays late to offer help. Best class I've taken.
Huber gives too much work. He does not follow the syllabus and when he does he will give you an 4 page paper due before the next class at noon. He works at the Times Union which is great, but sometimes I feel like he thinks we are his employees and gives us the amount of work he gives them. He forgets that students have other classes besides his.
Professor Huber is an excellent teacher. He gave me us lots of work, but everything was geared toward skills that will help us find jobs. We learned how to create web sites, how to write in clear language, not academic nonsense, how to work in teams, how to build an online portfolio to showcase our best work. Take this class. You'll love it!
Professor Huber's 490 DIgital Journalism class was a lot of fun. Not a stuffy teacher. It's not easy to pick up on all the projects, but I learned tons more than I expected when I registered for this required course. Good guy. He stays late and talks to students, not something you see often here.
I took the required digital journalism course in spring 2017, my last journalism class. I learned more in this class that helped me get a job than in any other class I took at UAlbany. I now work in marketing -- no journalism jobs - but I use website skills every day at work.
Super cool guy. Have taken two classes with him and think of him as more of a friend than a professor. Easy to have a conversation with, most student love him! Website building skills are useful for those going into digital media. Def one of the best profs in the Jrl dept
I was terrified of this course at first. I was also terrified of this course at the end of the course. Still, Michael Huber is a solid professor who wants to see you succeed. If you want to take the low road, prepare to fail. If you want to work as a journalist, this is the professor for you.
Huber is an awesome teacher. He's always there if you need him but also not on your butt if you don't want to do anything (but your grade will show it) and we pretty much spent the whole second half of the semester building websites however we wanted based on the projects he gave us. Class was really fun and not hard if you keep up with the work.
Very important class to take for journalists and writers. Huber teaches you how to adjust to the digital world and build your online presence which is super important.
Professor Huber pays attention to each one of his students and is highly respected for that!!! He truly cares about the future of journalism for us millennials.
Huber is a terrific human being and an exceptional mentor. Aside from the practical skills in his course, he is a fount of wisdom on the realities of working in media today. This is a man who will always make time to meet with you and go the extra mile.
Michael Huber is a wonderful professor and Communications and Marketing Specialist at the New York State Writers Institute. He was very nice and gave good information about the future. Michael was also a good mentor and helped me succeed in my future. I am proud to call Michael my mentor and my professor.
Really teaches you things that will help you after you graduate.
Huber is a nice guy. He wants to see us all do well. But he doesn't use blackboard which is a real pain. He doesn't respond to emails, and you have to be really proficient with website building to do good in his class. You don't learn anything in this class, he wants you to use what you already know, which many kids in the class did not.
I finished my journalism degree with Professor Huber's class this semester during covid. Even though we didn't meet in person, he went out of his way to get to know me and always encouraged me. I learned how to make videos, graphics, and build websites. Glad I took this course. Learned a lot of helpful skills that I hope will land me a job.
Finished my college education in Hubers class. Best professor I had at UAlbany. Friendly, helpful, intelligent and didnt act pretentious like other professors. He helped me a lot and taught me a bunch. Everyone should take a class with him, regardless of major. 490 taught me a lot.
i honestly why Huber teaches this course. He is completely inaccessible to students outside of class and plays clear favorites. He expects you to treat this class as if it's your only one, yet gives incredibly unclear guidelines and gives zero guidance on assignments. He is also incredibly insensitive to students who are struggling in his class.
Professor Huber is charismatic and considerate about providing students with skills to be better prepared for the workforce. You will walk away with many projects to bolster your resume. He is open to feedback and helping students do the best they can. This is a rewarding class and the effort you put in will equal the grade you end up getting.
It was a pleasure to learn in an environment that had such an acute focus on professional development.
Professor Huber is a great professor. He is an effective teacher and only wants the best for his students. I would recommend any class he teaches.
Huber really cares about his students. He gives a lot of time in class to work on things which also allows for feedback and he makes sure his students know they are cared for. He really wants to see his students succeed and has been a helpful professor to me in my final years here.
I liked Huber's style of teaching. He spoke about his own experiences and created hypotheticals to give us an idea of what the world of journalism is like out of the classroom. He treated us like adults that he respected. Huber also seems to genuinely care about the success and wellbeing of his students.
Amazing Prof! This class was by no means difficult if you showed up and did the work. We picked our topics for the midterm and final which made it fun. I not only learned a few new computer skills but also great life/real world skills. He was always available to help in anyway he could. I highly recommend taking a course with Prof. Huber!
Although instructions can be confusing at times, he is more than happy to stay late or meet with any student at any time during the week to go over the assignments and answer any questions or just talk about life. He will bring up his own experience during class and encourage kids to take risk when they go out in the real world.
Great professor! Shares many life experiences and truly cares about you as a student and your future! Highly recommend!!
Professor Huber is the best and he truly cares about his students success! I highly recommend him for any class!
Professor Huber was awesome. I had no experience with websites. He met with me on days off to help with my projects. Since he worked at the newspaper in Albany, he knows what he's talking about. I liked how he didn't talk down to the class. He said we're adults and we should be treated like adults. Don't miss deadlines!
i loved prof huber. most lectures were him sharing his experiences, which helped me a lot in feeling more comfortable with the shift to college. there were short writing assignments once a week which were submitted over email. he's very understanding with late work, and literally anything else if you reach out to him. very easy & enjoyable class
Huber is one of my favorite professors i've ever had. He has worked a few different rolls within journalism so he understands it from different perspectives. He is pretty patient with us which I appreciated a lot as building websites with Wix is overwhelming at times. He is really encouraging and gives lots of good life and professional advice. A++
In the beginning I didn't think I would like the course as much. It was later in the evening, and for three hours but Huber made the class worth it. Huber was clear on his grading and expectations. The course was fun as long as you show up and do what is asked of you, it's treated like a job. If you do your part then your grade will show it.
I took Professor Huber's digital journalism course in the spring semester 2023. He was the best professor I ever had at UAlbany. He stayed late and was easy to talk to at office hours for extra help. Learned a lot about website building and journalism and how to transition from college life to the workplace. Highly recommend!
Professor Huber is the perfect class to take for a senior level class. He doesn't treat you just as a student but a friend and co-worker. Be ready to write and make websites because you do work every class but with a lot of helpful steps that he provides as well. He gives great advice to help seek your career in writing!
Homework was easy and classes were short.
Professor Huber was one of my favorite professors at UAlbany. He treated everyone like an adult and wants the best out of everyone. His assignments are straightforward and for most of the assignments, you were allowed to pick the topic you write about. 10/10 recommend this class.
Great Prof for FYE. Cares more about your experience as a freshman than the class itself and if you show that you care about the class and your work then he shows just as much care in return. Great guy.
Huber was truly one of the best professors I had here at UAlbany. Not only was his class fun, he was too! The projects were actually interesting and beneficial, not just stupid assignments that are only for grading purposes. 100% take him if you can! The skills you learn in class will be helpful no matter if you are going into journalism or not! :)
Truly amazing professor and class. Honestly, without him, I don't think I'd my first semester as much. His assignments were simple, and you really just had to show up to pass. 100% would recommend this class. Only issue is about the DONUTS given to us on the last day, because I thought mine was chocolate but it was actually blueberry(joke).
I really enjoyed this class. He is one of the best professors I had at UAlbany. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students and wants everyone to do well. Projects and assignments are easy if you show up and put in the work. He is very personable and was always there to help us if we needed it.
Professor Huber was very helpful with a busy semester for me personally. He was understanding but, also was willing to tell you if you were slacking off (like I was at times). Very easy professor to talk to and as long as you communicate with him ahead of time, he'll work with you as much as possible.
Professor Huber was one of the best professors I've had so far at UAlbany. I left the class actually having learned something by the end of the semester. All of his assignments, and the class overall, prepare you for the journalism career field, in my opinion. Professor Huber was very understanding and easy to talk to as well! Feedback helpful!
I wonderfully enjoyed my class with Huber. Not only was he understanding but he prepares you for the real deal. He stresses that we must learn to make deadlines, especially since in the journalism world, this is crucial. If you communicate with him, he will do the same with you. Amazing professor that I will never forget.
Awesome professor. The assignments given in the class were great additions to my portfolio. You can tell that he's one of those professors who actually cares about connecting with his students and being a resource to the them in the best way he can. Professor Huber also kind enough to write me recommendations letters three times for grad school!
I took his AJRL 490 and he did an amazing work on keeping us on track about the assignments while being very nice. He gives great advice, is very understanding and a great mentoring figure. The work needed has a lot of explanation provided. If you have questions he always responds quickly. Great class and he really cares about his students!!!
I think he is a great professor. He challenged me to be a better writer and helped me learn how to make a website. He also prepared me better for my future, which is so beneficial. When I bring in homework, he always critiques it and gives me constructive feedback, which is advantageous to the growth of my work. He was also really funny!
Professor Huber, is great and caring. He is a very understanding person and tries to prepare students for life after graduation. He will make you do amazing work that will help build your portfolio, his assignments are not complicated and will help benefit you in the future. I would highly recommend taking his class before you leave the University.
Prof. Huber is someone that will have a lasting, positive impact on you. He's kind, respectful, and sets up each student for success. Often, you'll have 1-on-1's to track your semester progress. Projects are fun and open-ended, which allows for ample creativity. He's also very understanding and helpful, so don't be afraid to ask questions!
Professor Huber is a great guy who clearly cares about his students. I feel very lucky that my academic advisor put me in his FYE class because I know that the positive impact he's had on me will be long lasting. I'll definitely miss being in his class.
Prof Huber left a mark that I'll remember till I graduate. Reminded me of my favorite teacher from high school who was caring & kept it real. Treats you like a student and developing young adult. He's literally like an uncle lol. Assignments make you think and explore life outside of being a college student. Great person and even better teacher.
I really enjoyed this class, the course, and the Prof. Michael that made it the most enjoyable course ever. I learned a lot and grew tremendously during his class. Thank you Mike!
Prof. Huber was the best professor I had this semester, he is incredibly easy to talk to and truly does want all his students to succeed. He lets students be their true selves and does not tolerate judgment.
Professor Huber is a fantastic person. In this course you will be able to learn how to create website, design your website, create stories and how to navigate interviews. There will be variety of times he will let you choose the topic of your interest to write a story about, with enough constructive feedback. Highly recommend this class.
Of all the professors I had at UAlbany, Mike Huber was my favorite professor. Not only because he was a cool and chill person to have as a professor but also because he was someone who challenged me as a person and saw the creative spark in me for the photography career I want to pursue. So he's a great professor and a great person all the round.
Easily one of my favorite professors! The work we had to do was relevant to everyday life. We were taught skills that can be taken outside of the classroom. Professor Huber was very encouraging and helpful when it came to projects/assignments. He truly cares about his students well being both in and outside of the academic world.
Professor Huber is a great professor who truly cares for his students. In the fall semester of my senior year in Digital Publication, he inspired my passion for podcast production and encouraged me to exceed my limits. His accessibility and understanding reminded me of my agency in personal growth and success. He believes in his students.
There are so many good things I have to say, but I'm a bit limited by this word count. Please know that this class was my favorite of my entire college experience. Michael Huber is an excellent professor who cares about his students. The class consists mainly of reporting assignments (which Journalism majors will enjoy). Do your work on time!
Huber is a great professor! He really gives good advice and wants his students to strive for greatness.
Huber showed me how to utilize my skills and become a better writer. He had so much faith in me throughout the semester and still does for my future. I recommend taking any class he has to offer!
Huber is a great prof. and cares about each of his students. It's super easy to do well in his classes, as long as you show up and turn in your work on deadline! Definitely recommend taking one of his classes, they're supper fun, informative, and conversational!
Great man, great professor. His Digital Publication class was extremely beneficial. The stories we wrote were meaningful, and throughout the semester he made sure to try to prepare us for how a real newsroom would operate. By the end of the semester, my classmates felt more like collaborators, and Huber felt like our leader. Take this course!!!
The assignments he give aren't just schoolwork, it's real preparation for the field. The pressure, unpredictability, and need to show up even when you're not ready stuck with me. Thank you, Professor Huber, for helping us grow in our studies, and always pushing us to keep going no matter what obstacles. You were easy to chat with, and super kind!
Really good guy. Best professor I ever had. Willing to give extra time when he knows you're trying. Be prepared to do real reporting and don't be afraid of the website building. Glad my family met him at graduation. My mom said he told her he's proud of me. Awwww!!!!!!
He is one of the best professors I've ever had during the program. He is eager to help you succeed in the program and your future career as a journalist or broadly in the communications field. All the practical skills you'll learn and your creations during the class will help you land your job as I did. Moreover, the guy is hilarious and friendly!
I love Professor Huber. Having an early class on Friday is annoying, but he makes it worthwhile. Even though it was a seminar, he ensured that we had fun while learning. The class was incredibly engaging, and he communicated effectively with all of us. His TA, Alex is also really nice. Overall, I would choose Huber as a teacher and friend any day.
Mike Huber's freshman seminar helps first-year students build a strong foundation for the rest of their college years. If it were possible to give our educators grades, Professor Huber would have an A. Spending so much time on a 1-credit class shows a level of caring I have yet to see from professors at UAlbany.
Very caring professor. Didn't expect much, just had to show up and do the homework.
Professor Huber is an exceptional teacher. He truly cares for his students and wants the best for them. He advocates for students to simply go to class and do their homework. Every assignment he gave was manageable and simply took 5-10 minutes to complete.
