Honors 200 is a good class... if you have a lot of time to read and you like to participate in class. It's pretty easy to get away without reading the material, and he's a very laid-back guy.
This class will take all of your beliefs and challenge them. It is a great personal growth class.
awesome class, and awesome prof, hughey is da bomb. this guy is cool as hell.
Arrogant, ****, elitist. Unfortunate combination in an Honors Program Director. I hope other instructors in the program are not like him. Also dismissive if he disagrees with your idea.
Why IS he the Honors Director? Self-involved, manipuative, ego bigger than Texas. Dismissive of ideas that don't match his own. Wants to be thought-provoking but ends up being controlling. **** (makes snide remarks outside of class about heavyset female students). Makes me wnat to quit Progeram
Arrogant self-involved -- plays favorites -- believes in a "meritocracy" You'd think an Honors Director would be more enlightened Not Hughey If you don't subscribe to "Hughey's Universe" forget it Grit your way through Hon 200 Other Honors teachers ARE much better just not Hughey
Uses knowledge like a weapon Looks down on certain students Ironic he teaches about social groups and then can't relate to students (or only to the most elite ones) Middle name must be Arrogant! Watch out for this Prof Do Not Take
Completely agree with previous messages and then some For your own self-preservation take some other Prof for this class Because of this Prof I decided NOT to major in Sociology AVOID AVOID AVOID this Prof
What to say about Prof whose Ego is bigger than the class? If arrogance is a professin, he's got the PhD in it! He's why students, especially women, avoid the Honors Program! When Administratin wises up to him, school may get a REAL Honors Program Until then save your tuition and your self esteem!
He knows when an idea is good--when it's one of his own! He's a legend in his own mirro! Good example of why Narcissism is bad for your health! Must have gotten his Phd in the Sociology of the Sneer! Not a good Prof for Honors students Take any other Honors teacher but avoid this Prof
Prof what-a-waste Main subject--his self-importance & student learning zero! If he's the Honors director, I don't want to be part of the program. Also snipes at other profs (very unprofessional in my opinion) and women students (if unattractive--a lawsuit waiting to happen if you ask me). Avoid
An EXCELLENT professor. I never found him to be dismissive to ideas that he disagreed with and I never thought that he was egoistic. Much of the class was student discussion and what Prof. Hughey offered was very insightful and helpful.

I'm an almuni of MSU and had Hugey for intro soc as a freshman and sociology of religion as a senior and enjoyed both those classes a lot. His lectures are great and I always liked how he could get students to join in discussions. It's true he seems to play favorites, but when the chips are down and you need help he is there for help 110%. He does care about ALL his students, any class, majors and non majors alike. Give him a chance, Undergrads. He's well worth the experiance. Alum of Class of May 2000.
Hughey likes to play devil's advocate - he does it in all of his classes. He does it purposefully to try and get a rise out of students, to challenge them, to get them to react and stand up for their opinions and beliefs. He's not really a total jackass, as seems to be the consensus. I personally think that his teaching style is unique and interesting and it seems that a lot of people obviously can't handle it....
I've had Hughey for a number of classes and I've enjoyed them all. He definetely challenges people's opinions, but that's what professors are supposed to do. His classes have an easy going atmosphere, which allows for candid discussions. Overall, Hughey is a great professor.
Hmm..so he helped one student FIVE YEARS AGO? Get a grip He's toxic, he's arrogant, he's rude, he dotes on one or two "special" students (he decides --but no one know how) Want to learn how to feel like a microbe? Take his classes. Ratings running against him 5-1 so trust them Be real: He's bad for your student health!
OMG I wish I had seen these ratings earlier. I almost dropped out of the Honors Program because of this Prof. See his big head--that's because he's full of himself and a lot of hot air Arrogant YES Has favorite 'special' students YES. Someone report this guy to the Professor Police. Suffer his ego but take other Honors classes for your health
As a public service note that of the 21 ratings here all but one are negative This Prof must have a PhD in I'm-better-than-you'll-ever-be! Who let him out of his office cage? If you want to play games to get a decent grade, take him. If you want to learn something of real value, avoid him. I hope other Honors classes are an improvement!
Should have found ratings sooner Now I'm stuck But there's hope Heard through advisor there will be a new Honors director soon Easy to see why This Prof's ego is bigger than his ability to teach anything. Can see from other ratings that other Honors classes are much better so I won't give up yet But avoid this Prof at all costs
He's breathtakingly arrogant, rude, small-minded and overbearing all at once. I was floored when someone told me he directs the Honors program! Now I'm not even going to consider applying for that! Has awful & incoherent assignments. Why does the university allow him to teach at all? Avoid him!
All ratings on target This Prof's ego bigger than his brain Destroys your self-esteem then wants to know if you're interested in the Honors Program! So Not Savvy! Run away; run away now

Not just a jerk. He's a TOTAL JERK. See ratings and be informed.
Yikes. What's his problem? Who soured his apples? Ego out of control. Earth to Hughey. Earth to Hughey. Other ratings soooooooo truuuuuuee. Avoid this man if you value your brain or your sanity!
Can I punch him in the face now or do I have to wait until he rips me & everything I stand for to shreds?
Verbally controlling, egotistical, interested only in his own ideas. Either unreadable or non-responsive to students questions--especially if challenging, or veers off into a defensive rant Only a few weeks left in the semester and counting the days! Others tell me there are much better Profs in program. I can only hope. Read ratings & be informed
Very easy as long as take the time to study. Be prepared to have your opinions and ideas challenged, just like a good SOC professor should do. I wish I would have had time to be in the honors program.
He's not afraid to bring up controversial topics and discuss them in class, and that's good. He is very opinionated, and I often found myself disagreeing. This is good because it broadened my understanding of why I think the things I do and why others differ. He may get you heated, but discussion leads to understanding–which is why we're here!
ROCKS!

Why do we even have to take this class? Became totally uninterested in Honors program due to this prof and class
I don't care what anyone else says. I love this class. It is a class for mature people. If you can't handle having your beliefs challenged...maybe you should crawl back under your rock and stay there. I think Hughey has a lot to bring to the class. Besides what is better than sitting around and chatting? So what if you don't agree?
Lectures alot, however there is never any homework. We don't use a text book, so most information on tests comes from his lectures. Class isn't manditory, but if you miss something important you can't look it up in a book. Class and tests are easy, teacher is great. He always talks about stuff going on in the world the first half of the class.
Super simple class- take it if you want an easy Soc credit. Only take three short tests and no homework (except some reading). Lectures are relatively interesting and Hughey has a great personality.
No book... very hard class if you dont do good taking notes
IF you can pick out information that you think might be on one of your two 20 point exams or your 40 point final, take this class. No review sheets, or specified items to help you prepare for exams. Teacher was interesting, but had a different teaching style.
I HATE THIS CLASS AND THIS TEACHER!I wish I wouldve read these b4 cuz I never wouldve signed up 2 take him.Sorry some ppl cant just magically know whats going 2 be on the tests based on lectures for 1hr&15 min. He's so full of himself.I would rather have homework because i have failed both tests & probably the final and have to take the class over.
Does not provide necessary information for tests. Only good part about class was the story of the girl and thunderous noise. Ask him about it.
I really enjoyed this prof. Highly recommended!
If you pay attention in his class you will do well. Take notes, pay attention & listen to his great stories & you will come out of his classes a more educated person.
Does not provide adequate information for the tests. Very few points in class, so you MUST do well on the tests.
Three exams the whole semester. Prof. does not prepare you for exams. He lectures entire class and expects you to take notes without saying what's important. Doesn't use powerpoint and doesn't write anything on the white board. Impossible to take notes unless he tells you what to write down. Tests are terrible because you have no idea what's going
3 tests. no homework. tests are 25 points each meaning that each point on the test is over 1% of your grade. I'm a A student and i had no idea what I was supposed to learn or know during class and for tests. AVOID HIM. he doesnt care about anyone. WORST PROF i have ever had so far. over half the class failed the tests and no curve.
I would say that hughey is a prof you should take for upper level classes. I wouldn't take him for intro because he's not a freshman's prof. Attend class, keep up with readings, ask questions, go on tangents- If you have a question ASK IT he'll be more than willing to explain. Good Prof encouraged me to actually think.
Not a class for freshman. Show up for class, pay attention and write whatever you find to be important. Doesnt write on white board or give out a homework. He made me think critically and I enjoyed his class. By far my favorite prof.
I don't know why his ratings are so low. Fabulous professor, I went into the class thinking I would hate it, but his lectures made me want to come back again and again, even through it was a morning class. Tests were easy, right off material from the class.
Hard to keep up with what he's talking about. Only 3 exams all semester so it's pretty much pass/fail.
He said he was the "textbook", show up to class and there is no way you won't get an A. I've been to every class and studied for 2 hours for the first test and received an F. The questions and multiple choice options were not in layman terms. The essays, I still think I had the right answers after reviewing. classroom participation, forget it
I loved this teacher! I hadn't known much about sociology before taking his class, but now I'm majoring in it. He assigns readings, but I never did them, if you should up you should have no problem getting an A. His lectures are really interesting and it was a fun class! No group work or in class assignments or anything.
I came into this class thinking that Sociology was a joke, hoping that someone would change my mind. Well, i actually respect it more, not because of Hughey though. I discovered in this class that he is by far the worst not just teacher but professor i have ever had. I really hope there aren't worse at teaching and respecting their students.
Awful teacher. Just awful. Worst I've ever had. Plus I can't say how I REALLY feel because it would be considered an 'unclean comment'.
Terrible, doesn't curve and your whole grade is 3 tests. The total points you can get in the class is 80 points, so it's impossible to ace. Absolutely awful, worst professor I've ever had. Do not ever take a class with him, seriously. I'm an A student and I'm struggling.
Hughey can be a little boring because he teaches the longer classes, but if you listen you'll get a lot out of his classes. It's easier to listen and take light notes then refer to the book later because it's easier to follow that way. He'll make you earn your A but you'll get a lot out of the class if you work at it.
He's a good teacher and you hardly ever use the textbook!
I get that it's sometimes hard to follow what he goes on about in class, but what you get depends on YOU! There were so many lazy people in my class, who chatted during lessons, and never studied. How did you except to NOT fail?! He's good, and his notes are very easy to read and understand. Stop blaming him for your laziness and work hard.
Hughey is seriously the best. Sweetest man ever. Has funny stories all the time and am constantly laughing in class! Cares about students as individuals. Everyone who says he is awful can piss off because you're lazy.
You are given three exams the entire class, no other points are given. The exams are 20 questions or less and worded horribly. He gives no slides, reviews, or feedback. he doesn't care at all about the students. he only cares about himself and tells stories that have no meaning to the lesson. I learned nothing from him. do not take this course.
Hughes is a nice guy and a decent professor. Class attendance is absolutely necessary. Take good notes and be prepared to put in some serious study time. There were 3 tests throughout the semester and a few in class opportunities for extra credit. If you show up and pay attention it is not a tough course to pass.
His tests ?'s were so poorly written and his lectures were unclear and unorganized that his questions wouldn't align with what he says. He simply says that everything we need will come from the lecture. No book or website will help clarify HIS definitions of terms. 3 tests worth almost 20 points each, get 2 ?'s wrong on 1 and you're down a grade.
If you do bad in a Hughey class you're LAZY! His lectures are entertaining, & relate to the topics. He only gives a few tests all semester. go to class & review your notes. Stop being lazy & put the effort in. Hughey cares so much for his students & wants them to succeed. You'd know this if you bothered to have a conversation with the man!
His lectures are interesting, but often go no where. He's unorganized, and unclear on what exactly to expect on the tests. Will ask you every day "do you guys have any questions" in which no one will respond. Overall bad professor for soc 110. Would not recommend him for this course.
not organized and spends most of the semester talking of things that pertain to NOTHING! really nice guy and is definitely smart, but has not structure for the class at all.
Very good personality, but not a good professor. All lecture with no books, power points, study guides, etc. Lectures are sometimes hard to understand the concept as he usually tells lots of stories.
Long lectures that mostly consist of him telling stories, but you have to catch every word or you're out of luck. Very minimal number of points so each one counts. No test reviews so you have to write down everything he says and study hard and hope thats enough. He's a nice guy but the class is hard work. Assigns many long and boring readings.
Lecture based class. No book- book would have been helpful if he offered one...I Struggled with the class as there was no structure to the material.
A lot of people say that Hughey is an extremely hard professor, but if you go to class, take notes, and LISTEN to his lectures (even if they go astray), there's no reason that you shouldn't pass. His "stories" DO PERTAIN to the material and are NOT pointless. They are meant to make a point. Hughey makes class interesting and is very intelligent!
You have to listen to every word of his long drawn out stories to get the small bits of info he puts into his tests. very few points for the class, and no textbook makes it difficult.
So much reading in this class, we had three books to read from. The lectures did get a little boring, but he acknowledged that they were. He told us to ask questions, and sometimes we didn't start actual class material until a half-hour into it because he was talking with us. Awesome guy, but he makes you work for that grade with two tests.
Extremely selfish/weird/liberal/atheist and just an overall bad guy.
I dreaded this class because it is a purely lecture based with no text book. Gives less than 100 points all semester so it makes it difficult to earn points especially if you do bad on an exam. Gives very few assignments worth very little points. He stood in front and lectured without power points or anything to make it interesting.
I'm not one to normally write reviews, but: I enjoyed his class far more than I thought I would. I took away a lot of useful and practical information. Dr. Hughey is a good lecturer and makes it easy to absorb the point he is making. Taking the course online in the summer was intense. There was a lot of work involved, but understandably so.
The final was worth more points than you were able to abtain in the class throughout the entire semester. The entire class was entirely lecture based with a few short readings. Last days before the test, instead of telling you what to look at to prepare he tells stories for the entire class (which at the end he tells you are fake) but tests on them
Do not take a class from Dr. H. He is unclear on what he lectures on, but expects you to understand. He tells pointless stories with no correlation to his lectures.
Hughey talks a lot but everything he says is related to the tests. You just have to put the effort into reading and studying.
Insanely tough professor. There are 3 grades given in the class; a midterm, final, and a paper on a book from the book list, all graded subjectively. No study guide, no review, just a lot of information thrown at you. I had solid A's in the rest of my classes, worked my butt off for a C in his class, when I questioned this, he just smiled. AVOID!!!
Worst class I've ever taken, if you can avoid taking any classes with him do it. The rambles on about his personal life and tells stories that are supposed to relate to the class but don't. He only grades 3 things for the entire class, midterm, final, and one essay. The problems is the final is worth double the points of the other two combined.
You have to go to class everyday because his tests are all lecture based. Lots of memorization. Its unclear what aspects of his lecture are tested so you have to study everything. There are only about 100 points in his entire class, so if you get a 10/20 on your first (of three) exam, you have to get 100% the rest of the semester to get a 90% grade
