Dr. Istvan is a wonderful Professor. He is very knowledgeable, and I found his choice for Textbook ( Rauhuts Ultimate Questions: Thinking about Philosophy -3rd Edition) was very helpful. Attending the Lectures is crucial as well as taking detailed notes, which is easy since he loves to talk and write! He is helpful, and very charismatic!
Professor Istvan is nothing short of a fascinating teacher. His class is a purview of all the most important philosophical questions, but even with the wide scope he still manages to dig deeply into each topic. I left the class knowing he was my friend. The eccentric and brilliant professor Istvan has that effect on many of his students.
Go to class and take good notes, the test will be based on these, participate which he encourages but when appropriate, he will ask. Try to do the writing assignments early so you are not dragging. Overall he is a great teacher, he manages to cover all the work but he is also entertaining which can appreciated when taking the class on late nights.
Micheal is the man! He's very neutral when it comes to the philosophical stances; he always fully reveals both sides of the debate. He's very respectful of everyone's opinions and values but he doesn't shy away from getting you to think of things in a different light. He also has a very unique engaging lecture style. Highly recommended!
This man is hilarious and will have the entire class laughing the first day. His method of teaching is mainly through lecturing but, during his lectures he takes himself off the teacher pedestal so we can all be peers discussing new ideas. He is very friendly, chill, and a great teacher. warning: tests very hard but he gives you days to do it.
Participation is encouraged but he is quick to shoot students down when they're wrong. He only taught a few lectures, students taught everything else (if you don't like public embarrassment avoid this class). He's knowledgeable about the subject matter though & quite funny as a person. He's horrible at grading things, your grade is kinda a surprise
Prof Istvan is a good teacher for the class, philosophy can usually be a pretty dry topic with a lot to memorize but he engages the class and provides good humor and commentary for the material. The only thing to watch out for is the group presentation; if you aren't coordinated it can get a bit confusing so talk to your group members and be ready.
He was an amazing professor that was very knowledgeable about philosophy and made the material easy to learn and in depth. He cares a lot about his students and also keeps everyone entertained and engaged. Great teacher, I'd definitely take his class again.
Enjoyed being in his class, always kept it interesting, l am still looking over my logic exercise to get a better understanding thanks again for having such a great professor that loves to teach, you can see it in his class that he cares and passionate about what he do
He was great! He was very flexible as well as understanding! He does go a little fast in lecture but if you ask questions, he will break it down for you!
Professor Istvan is one of the best professors I've had, especially for a core class. He is passionate about his field and it shows in his lectures, and that passion is contagious. The material is kind of hard to grasp but he works hard to put it into simpler terms. If you have the opportunity, take his class, you will not regret it.
He uses humor during his lectures, although some may find his humor kind of dark. He does talk kind of fast, which can be a challenging to learn from. Test are take-home/open notes/self graded, BUT DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THAT! Take plenty of notes. Not an easy A, but very manageable. Everyone must teach the class at least once, but twice forExtraCred
Professor Istvan method of teaching philosophy keeps you engaged and intrigued. He communicates really well, cares about each student, and helpful in explaining the material in further details if needed.
Great teacher! Stay engaged and participate. Follow directions and give a little effort, everything will be fine!
If you stick with the material and show effort, Professor Istvan will take great care of you! The textbook is free! The tests are take home and self graded! Participation is key. Mike is super enthusiastic and provides super entertaining and hilarious lectures.
He was okay. Grades come from a few things. Humor is kind of dark and his tests are extremely difficult.
Had to drop the class before it was over I never understood what he was talking about he talks to quickly and is all over the place during lectures even with taking notes and the online textbook I always did poorly on his tests and there is a required group presentation you have to do which is worth 50% of the grade
Anyone can be successful in this class as long as you try and do not give up! Go to every class and take notes. If you don't understand the material Michael is more than happy to help. If you do not do well on the logic test, trade that grade for a second presentation. Istvan is passionate and caring, you'll love this class.
There's a test 1, midterm, present., and final. NO CLASS WORK/HW. Exams are take-home, open book/note & you even grade it yourself & send him the original along w the graded copy thru email. Doesn't teach almost all semester, students do through presentations for about 10/16 wks. Pay attention to note-taking w it comes to exams. overall tough class
Fun teacher but watching presentations for a couple months sucked.
Lectures are long but very interesting. He moves quick so, get ready to write notes. Also, get ready to read because the lectures and test are directly from the book. However, he is pro student and is very open to extra credit on all his exams. I really enjoyed his class and learned so much.
Most lectures are taught in presentations by the students in assigned groups and that makes up half the grade, the rest comes from 3 tests.. When he did teach he went very quickly and easily got off topic. Tests are take home but even with my all my notes they were still very difficult. I wouldn't recommend him and would look for another professor.
He is a great professor, very funny and keeps class entertaining. Attendance isn't mandatory to pass this class, I didn't go to class for a full month and half and still received a B. The test are easy as long as you study the exam study guide he gives you.
I wish i could take this professor for each of my classes! Get ready to keep up with all the notes that he is very clear about! Tests are take home just read the notes/review for them and you should be good! One presentation that is worth 50% of your grade but very easy to make an A on! Attendance isn't mandatory but the notes are really helpful!!!
Dr. Istvan is passionate&charismatic. He can effortlessly talk scenarios&facts consistently with such energy, using out of the ordinary& extreme cases to drive point home. As long as you participate, u will pass. He will work with u & is very empathetic with how stress classes can be. I appreciate his genuine concern for his students & generosity.
Dr. Istvan is different from other PHIL professors as in: he doesn't require tons of essays other Ethics profs require. This is a hybrid class where students help teach the theories, which was daunting at first but I really learned about the theory that I helped present, and it's 50% of grade. Learn the Logics part well and you will do fine!
His exams were super difficult. Even though those were take-home exams and provided study guides before each exams, it was pretty difficult to find the correct answers. No extra credit. His lecture was heavy, but more than half classes were taught by student presentation. Easy B if you did every exam and presentation, but difficult A.
Michael does his best to provide lots of enthusiasm for a topic that might not be exciting for everyone. Don't ever be afraid to ask questions-- he's always happy to answer them. Most of the material is provided by group presentations. Exams are open note but are more difficult than you think so take notes and when in doubt, elaborate!
Excellent energy from the prof and the class. He really cares for the students. Ask him to help you with anything, like getting a job, proofreading one of your papers, spiritual advice, how to deal with a problem roommate. . . Istvan is always available beyond the confines of the class.
Horrible professor this class is hard and he doesn't help. The class is taught by students in groups and he just gives notes and the tests are hard
Mr. Istvan was a great professor. He made you work for your grade. He provides the e online copy of the textbook which was a plus. He will not hold your hand and I encourage you to write everything down. No matter what it is. Attendance is not mandatory but if you miss one day, you will miss a lot. Take home tests/open book and notes. I earned a A!
His lectures are interesting but not really helpful on exams. His tests are all take home but my notes from lecture were pretty much useless. I had to google every question just to find the right answers. Most of your grade comes from the tests and there's a presentation everyone does in groups. You don't get to choose your topic or your partners.
Professor Istvan lectures are confusing and his exams are no better. He does offer open book and notes, but even then his exams are confusing. I recommend to do 2 class presentations cause his logic portion is difficult.
If you do good on your presentation and come to class ready to learn and ask questions youll get an A
He is a very personable teacher, that genuinely cares about his students. He is not there to just hold your hand, you have to pay attention and make an effort. Participation during class discussions are important, and you give one presentation that seems overwhelming but is overall easy.
Professor Istvan is without a doubt one of the best Professors I've had the privilege of taking a course with at ACC. He is extremely well versed in this subject and seems to be generally knowledgeable about most areas of study. Very charismatic an hilarious. He's able to take difficult concepts and deliver it in such brilliant way. 5/5
Professor Istvans course appears difficult at first and his presentations seem overwhelming, but its not bad at all. Take good notes and you will do well on the midterm and final. At the beginning of the semester, he tells you not to worry and he means it! Dont stress the course, he will take care of you.
If lectures aren't you're thing he still makes it easy to follow along for those who ask. I'd imagine this is a hard class to be an efficient professor in, but it is doable with a professor like Mike who sets you up to succeed.
He is super cool and straight to the point.
Prof. Istvan is down to earth and hilarious. He is the utmost encouraging prof. I've encountered and truly cares. The subject is difficult already, but you're given the tools to succeed. He is well versed and brings a new perspective to the subject. Believe him when he does his spiel at the beginning of the course! You can make an A, Participate!
The course is difficult, but his knowledge on the material makes it easier for you to understand. Dr. Istvan sincerely cares and wants you to succeed (plus, he's hilarious). If you make an effort and participate, you could make an A. Take good notes, present twice, and you will only have a midterm and final, which he gives ample time to complete.
Dr. Istvan is awesome! He cares about his students and makes lecture interesting. All the students have to present once and twice for extra credit (: The presentations are easy, he will give you all the info. you need. This is one of my favorite classes it will help you prepare for the future. 100%!
Funny guy but bad professor. He was always making jokes and makes all the students feel comfortable but I didn't really learn much. The lectures are confusing and he moves through material quickly. His tests are take home but notes don't help. No one in class ever seemed to know what was going on. He's cool but you won't learn anything.
Doesnt really teach makes the students do it in groups. He is funny but I didnt really learn anything the whole semester. Hard to understand sometimes with abstract concepts and he moves through material quickly and is all over the place.
Dr. Istvan is a great/ different professor. Pay attention to his examples given in class, (they might be on his TAKE HOME test) in other words take good notes. If you do two group presentations your chances of making an A are HIGH.
He is a fun guy and his classes are very interesting. Grading pattern is so much nicer than any other professor. He really appreciates everyone and knows all about the topic. So much educated and talented person. Smart person and a fun loving environment. Would definitely recommend taking his class and I would do that too. :)
Dr. Isvan is a great Professor. Hos course is challenging but you can definitely get an A if you pur effort into it. His tests come straight from his lectures. He allows recording, I did and it definitely helped! I'd 1000% take a course of his again!
Prof. Istvan is a great professor! If you pay attention and participate, you can achieve an A without too much work. He is usually informal, and class is more like a discussion than a lecture. Each student will have to do at least one presentation, but Dr. Istvan gives you everything you need to do a good job.
kept things interesting even when they werent
The best Prof i've had during my time at ACC.
Best professor ever. Prepare for the presentation!
His textbook and notes are nonsense. Everything he writes is packed with so much extra garbage (in order to flaunt his intelligence) that you have to decode the language in order to understand it. He was wildly innapropriate and insulting to others. Lost my 4.0 from far more difficult classes to a technicality in ethics. Smart dude but not fair.
Dr. Istvan is an amazingly smart teacher. His knowledge of ethics is overwhelmingly evident and he is able to make any lecture interesting and beyond hilarious. This class is very hard however. The tests are very difficult even if you are a good student and understand the material well. Prepare to make friends & study groups if you want to pass.
Absolutely amazing. Great lectures. He gives excellent feedback and if you show up, theres no reason you shouldnt get an A.
The tests are HARD. The questions are confusing, you feel like you're being tricked and you're always second guessing yourself. He obviously knows his stuff but gets annoyed when students aren't catching on. I only chose his class because people said it was an easy A, I don't know what they're talking about because I struggled since day 1.
Professor Istvan made me feel extremely uncomfortable always telling jokes uses extreme profanity I did not know when he was ever actually been serious his tests are extremely difficult and a big chunk of your grade is determined off a group presentation if you are not prepared he will crucify you and attack you with questions u warned good luck
Doc Istvan is spectacular. You will likely prefer his lectures over group presentations but as he tells the class the lessons learned from working with teammates and building up the confidence to teach a class session are what really matters to becoming successful in life. Istvan got me into all my colleges! He even called several for me! CARES
Just got back home and all I can talk about is how great Istvan was. My time in the US has been great. He has welcomed me into his home. I just cannot say enough.
Doctor Istvan is an intense researcher who still cares about teaching regular people. He has super humble roots and is down to earth enough to share that with the class. His class operates more like a family. So if you skip you might not understand what is expected and find him intimidating. (For all those who like intense artist types he has a gf)
The good Doctor is not afraid to tell us about his personal life and be vulnerable. Istavan is comfortable with exposing his flaws, even about highly personal matters. A lot of them he knows we have too. This makes us feel trusted and confident to excel. Intelligent and emotional. If you want polished go elsewhere. Istavan instead is authentic.
Amazing first class. This is going to be an excellent semester.
Michael a great professor! But he is first and foremost a mentor. He actually listens. He advocates for us. He reaches out to us without us asking. He helps us figure out how to navigate not just through his class, but through other classes. In my case, he inspired me to make connections at UT and make my transfer application as strong as possible.
To smart for his own good. He is crude and unprofessional. encourages you not to email him And just ask during class tests are take home but hard an confusing. I knew the material but second guessed myself cause the questions are nonsense. 50% of the grade is group project with students who never show up for class or respond to emails good luck
A beautiful course from a gifted teacher who is a "great soul" (in the sense that Aristotle uses that phrase in the Nicomachean Ethics)
Glad he was able to teach all the way in Leander
Most of your grade depends on a group project and assigns the groups and the rest comes from take home tests that are extremely difficult and tricky. Yes he is funny but all over the place while he lectures. The group presentations are a joke and he only understands the material. I barely passed. I would pick someone els.
After I read an article by Michael I wanted to be his student. My husband moved with with me from Sao Paulo to work with Michael. For a very busy man his classes are wonderful. I go to all he offers. American students do not understand what they get. How can someone skip or talk during lecture? Michael still does not get mad. My religion has grown!
I have no idea what my grade in the class is and its the last day of the semester. His test are take home but difficult. The textbook is useless. laziest professor Ive ever had. go to class, take notes the best you can, hope theyre good enough to pass the test. Self grade your tests. & for 2/3 of the semester the class is taught by students
disagree with the other comment. almost everyhing in class is self-graded, so it is impossible not to know grade. he even gave out spredsheet to help us do the math. i do prefer when he lectured though, not students!
Istvan is a very kind person who speaks passionately about his subject and doesn't place pointless burdens on students like busy work or requiring an expensive textbook that the class doesn't use. His lectures are entertaining. I liked it best and feel I learned the most when he lectured. He is flexible about due dates, which I appreciated a lot.
I definitely do not recommend this professor. As others have stated his tests are extremely difficult. I spent almost 8 hours on each test and still barely passed them. The students teach the majority of the semester & no one knows what in the world theyre talking about. Laziest teacher Ive ever had. We even had to grade our own tests. Ridiculous
Definately a bright spot in my day. Even when students are teaching Dr. Istvan engages the entire time adding humor and insight. You think you know where he stands n the fundamental issue of ethics but you do not. He is great at playing devils advocate and getting students to do so as well.
Straightforward grading. Easy B. Tough A. Do all tasks and guaranteed a C. Use Michael as a resource. He looks young but is wise.
Energized!!!
The most challenging class I have had in my academic career thus far. Professor Istvan's intellect can be intimidating, his teaching style is informal and he is definitely not giving hand-outs. He is genuine, and if you care about your education and your grade you can succeed in his class. If you can record lectures, it will help tremendously.
If you enjoy teaching yourself the material then this is the class for you. The hardest class that I have taken so far. Majority of the semester was taught by the students; except for two weeks worth of the semester that was taught by the professor. If you need this class for your major look elsewhere. There are better Philosophy professors.
HANDS DOWN MOST PRO-STUDENT PROFESSOR YOU WILL FIND! Unlike one report Mike Istvan taught officially 7 weeks, not 2 weeks, and for reset of weeks in EVERY class he helped students presenters teach the material. You should be serious in his class, which is one of the best offered at ACC regardless of discipline!!!
In our class Michael experimented with lecturing up at the board with student presenters. He told us about the positives and negatives of other styles he has used over his years of teaching. As an education instruction major its nice that Michael experiments with his approach.
Awful and inappropriate. You teach yourself and he sits in the back of the class and grades you. He was funny but jumbled in his speaking the few times he did teach. The majority of the class is taught by students in groups who are all too nervous and dont know what theyre talking about
Agreed. Istvan will help you out of tough spots without seeming above you. He shares his difficulties with the class and relates them to the topics. His class is for people who care. But he still does everything to make those who dont care pass!
Going back into the fall semester hoping to have more teachers like Istvan. He made my spring semester inspirational, which carried me through a summer of travel and great experiences. Presentations mean so much in this class, and for your later life. Take them seriously. If you do, he will help you get a great job or transfer to UT or Txstate.
All my classes have been at Cypress. Istvan is by far the best professor at Cypress. His Ethics class is full of passion only a month in! Besides a couple of noisy and rude students, the experience is perfect.
He is funny, he does care, he is intelligent. BUT he is condescending, and likes to say often that he "teaches to the lowest common denominator" and makes remarks that make students feel stupid. He is passionate about his class, but he does make you basically do his job and teach the rest of the semester after the first test. Strong personality.
He has a tough personality, but he is passionate about his class and he will give you as many examples and explanations in order to get the class on the same page. his lectures are amazing, he uses the white board and never uses powerpoint. for the group project is important to have organization and show that you worked hard, its a piece of cake
Only participation, logic exam, midterm & final and group presentation are taken into consideration for grades. His tests are take home but full of abstract ideas that do not make you feel confident about your answers. He makes you feel inferior during class telling you that he can't answer your questions because you should know what he's saying...
Ethics was a mindblowing experience. I think I lucked out with the teacher because everyone I talk to hates taking this required course. It truly changed my life. Many of us in the class are going to switch majors to philosophy now!
What an amazing experience. Take this class. Take this class if you care about life and have some sense of gratitude. If you are apathetic, nihilistic, tuned-out, inhumane, easily-triggered, bitter about reality, then what is reflected back at you in the Istvan experience will likely make this a bad time. Or maybe, just maybe, you might change.
NO reason not to do well on tests. Take home, straight from lecture. He also gives out the answers in a way too obvious to state. Those who pay attention spot the answers. Those who care about phil do well regardless. Those who dont do well are too tuned-out to see what is in front of them or be helped, even by Dr. who wastes too much time on them!
Hes is a okay teacher. During lectures he goes really fast and you can barley read his handwriting. All test were take home test not extremely easy if you dont know the basics. The study guides are super long. He doesnt put in grades any grades the entire semester. You dont know your final grade until after the grades are posted.
Almost everything in this class is graded by the students themselves (following rubrics and keys). It is extremely strange to hear someone complain that they dont know their grades. Everyone knows their grades! Each student gives themselves their grades.
This class first seems too hard. He is trying to toughen us. He tells you in the first class not to complain. He tells you it is bootcamp. Just hang in. Learn something. Then easy A. Slacked off and still got a B. This is guaranteed B class.
This class was hard. If you dont pay attention or put in effort then good luck. His test was the hardest thing ever. The material was hard. Im glad the class is over. Also he doesnt have office hours you have to email him if you need to talk to him. The class is taught by him but then he puts us in groups and we have to teach the material.
The grading is base off of Participation (10%), Final (25%), Midterm (25%), Logic Exam (10%), and presentations (30%). For presentations he put us in groups and gives us notes he made up in his own words and makes us teach it to the class for a grade that is 30%. He teaches the class for the first month then we teach and at the end he teaches.
Lectures only. They are an hour long and he doesnt get to the point. You cant tell what information is useful because he rambles nonsense. Very confusing. Not engaging at all.
Great if you like Ted Talks. Easy A.
A is pretty much guaranteed if you belong in college
Loved it. Got a B but easy A. He cares if you care.
this has been a wonderful short semester. it is easy to focus just on the material instead of the grade because it is easy to get and A or B. such a caring and knowledgeable person
Professor Istvan is very understanding about family emergencies and corona virus issues and will work with you always.
Professor cracked my world open just in the first week. Online! Philosophy seems much cooler than I thought
In general philosophy is not the course where you can just Google quizlet all the answers. Dr Istvan tells you exactly what is going to be on the test. They are all open notes and book and gives you a whole week to do it. If you have trouble, just email him and he will help you out. Take him if you need a philosophy credit.
Ive never regretted taking a course so much in my life. He gets off tangent, lectures are 2+ hours (mind you online), he doesnt grade anything and is very condescending about it. He rants about how were basically sensitive and stupid. He had a whole day condescendingly aggressively addressing triggers. Hes wack, do yourself a favor.
Prof Istvan is hands down the best. I tried intro two previous times. The care he shows for philosophy and for students is amazing. He is sarcastic. He cares even if it sounds otherwise. He is a jokester. Steer clear if you have no sense of humor. He can be too real for some. He can stir up unwanted questions and emotions and make you question.
I've watched 3 lectures so far, they're great and entertaining. For once I feel like in real college, not 13th grade. I just met this teacher and he already looked over my resume and met with me, on weekend, to discuss interview strategy. He really does care and treats us like adults.
Professor Istvan is available with asynchronous course, phone too. The first exam and others is directly from the videos on youtube! We are allowed to watch videos while doing the exam and we have two weeks to do it. Professor Istvan is very understanding of our time. He pushes us but shows if we try we can do it. You only do bad by not trying.
I agree. Mike takes his duty seriously. It is hard to see liberal arts as important if you are a math mjor or engineer. But as Mike says: reading Melville or Plato, all their characters, is important for developing EMPATHY for others. Mike has helped me avoid relapse. He gives his number out. I can call anytime. No teacher has ever cared like this.
very flexible on deadlines very genuine and vulnerable very easy to make a good grade very inspirational and motivational very caring and sweet very unique and quirky very straightforward WHOLE SEMESTER SCHEDULE IS GIVEN IN SYLLABUS
Understanding professor.
this class was excruciating and unbearable. he gives no interaction with the class all semester and he only provides close to 2 hour daily lectures that are just too tiring to watch all the way through. he goes off-topic in each lecture video which makes it super hard to pay attention. tests are hard and hard to understand. worst class!
Completion of all assignments gets every one at least C. That allows you to focus on lectures NOT on how to figure our the quirks of the teacher
The subject was very interesting and I definitely learned new concepts in philosophy, but I learned skills of thinking that I didn't even know I was missing . Prof Istvam is the most caring teacher. He wants you to do well and the class is like life coaching and motivation.
Dr. Istvan eats and sleeps philosophy and critical thinking. The class was exciting but difficult. Spoiled students tried to complain it was too hard. I refused to join in on reporting. The class felt like course even a philosophy or ethics major would find interesting. To see a teacher so passionate for once was cool.
Because Dr. Istvan refuses to teach like it's 13th grade students in my class Group Me tried to take him down. Yes it may be too hard for just a community college course. But as others say everyone gets a good grade! The lectures and readings are hard. Getting an A is not! I like that Dr. Istvan has standards but holds our hands.
Istvan is highly knowledgeable and understanding, but the lectures were unnecessarily long. He goes off on tangents way too often. Take another philosophy professor!
What an excellent man and teacher. He has allowed me to attent his classes at various universities. Even the same material never gets old. He is the most caring teacher I have ever met, even out of elementary middle and high school. Truth matters most to him. He loves all but he has no time for virtue signals. Other profs treat us like invalids
