He was a good teacher, knows the subject. His class schedule is very clear and straightforward, 4 test and a paper w/no hmwrk. Mandatory attendance, 3 absences allowed and the test is off the extra readings and slides. a lot of info to take in, but the "final" is the last test an it's not cumulative..
I do not recommend students taking his class for the following reasons. First, he does not convey the information in a way that is understandable to his students. Second, he assigns two books. One on line and one that we had to purchase. The online was very difficult to understand. Plus movies. Third, on the second test most students received D's.
funny prof. tests are hard but i loved the class. one of csuns best.
Class consist of 4 Test all on the Power points given which are HARD! Interesting class but a hard class! Do not TAKE unless you're good with REALLY memorizing stuff. Attendance is mandatory..
This class was one of my favorites! i dont know why pple are giving bad reviews! He is so helpful, he responds to emails fast. Test are easy if you study, they are literally straight off the powerpoints. i did not buy the book or read the online readings and i got an A in the class. just go to class daily & really study the pwr pts & u'll get an A!
A good student is a good student regardless of the professor. I took him for summer session and even though it was a lot of material for a 6 week class, he made it his priority to make his material clear and understandable. He's also very funny and encouraging. Team Carter! I recommend this professor!
great prof who cares about students. take him!!!!!
Carter is a great professor. His tests are made from his lecture slides. He literally copies and paste them to the test. Make flashcards of the powerpoints and you will be fine. 4 exams, 1 research paper (12-15pages). Attendance is mandatory.
the class was interesting! he was a good professor but the tests were a little on the hard side. he graded on a HUGE curve. overall a cool class
Carter is one of the best professors I've ever had. He really knows his stuff and how to make the subject interesting. He's helpful, enthusiastic, and really helps you to stay motivated. Take him! He completely changed my outlook on school. TEAM CARTER, WHADDUPPPP!
He is a very easy professor. The exams are all based on the power points and only 3-5 questions are from secondary reading materials. All you really have to do to pass is review the lectures (available on moodle) and pay attention. He is also very helpful outside of class and does not have too many expectations of his students. I would definitely take him again!
Carter is the best professor I have ever had at Csun! I Definatly recommend you take him! He is very helpful and makes the class interesting! Take him
Professor carter is my favorite professor here at CSUN. he makes the class and subject very interesting. he is funny and enthusiastic about sociology. The tests are fair and all it takes to pass is to study the material. If anyone wants to take a intro to sociology class, professor carter is the one who you need to take it with.
As an incoming freshman, it was intimidating coming to college, he give us advice on college and has a very kind heart. No final to take. 4 Exams. Book was not used. No homework assignments. Curves grade. Makes class very interesting and wants to help. Plus he likes the 49ers which is a plus
Very standard college lecture course...he posts the lecture slides on moodle, not necessary to get the book. all you need to do to pass the class is to go to lecture. he's very passionate and makes sociology really interesting. i would definitely recommend him!
Professor Carter is one of the best professors. As a first-time Freshman I thought the class was easy and straight forward. You do not necessarily need the book; you just need to study all of the lecture slides. Overall he is a great instructor and I learned a lot.
Dr. Carter's approach to teaching this class was very helpful. His lectures and slides clarified the subject matter and textbook readings for me. He gave great examples to illustrate concepts.
Class was interesting but tests were VERY hard. He gave us extra credit so it you did it you got 2 additional percentage points, but didn't help me much lol. Read the book and slides thoroughly and do flash cards for the slides.
Professor Carter is one of the greats. He really wants you to pass & succeed in life. The book is only used as help, as quizzes are based mostly off the powerpoints and readings on moodle. Aside of the 4 exams, the grade consists of a term paper which he gives you a few options to do it on. When thinking about taking the class, join team carter.
Passionate professor who loves teaching.Presentations are effective/clear.Harsh grading system based on memorization of four books and a researched term paper.Tough to pass this course. If you are a female student, you will find his personal points of view about women offensive. He frequently makes inflamitory comments.Except that,it is a good class.
Tough class but great professor. Dr. Carter is a hard grader but fair. Would take him again.
Good prof. He's straightforward and very clear on what he expects on tests. Just study his P.P slides and you'll be fine. I took him summer 2014
Great Professor. He is very clear on all the subject matter and wants all his students to do well.
Dr. Carter is by far the best Professor at CSUN. He is very clear in his lectures. The book is NOT required. The exams are all based off the slides, as long as you study the lecture slides you will pass! There are 4 exams. 1st exam covers 1-2 lectures, the 2nd exam covers 3-5, 3rd exam covers 6-8, 4th exam covers 9-14. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.
Easy class. Attendance is not mandatory. Don't buy the textbook ! Study lectures. Easy test entirely based on lectures. He is clear and funny at times. Take this class for an easy A or B.
Great teacher!!! Very easy class to pass.
Dr. Carter is a great professor! As long as you know the lecture material you'll pass. Attendance is not mandatory since he doesn't take roll. Don't buy the textbook, as long as you study the lecture notes before the test you'll do good. Curves grades on the test depending on how the overall class scores.
He's a pretty easy professor, no need to buy the book since his tests are based on lectures only. He posts all of his PowerPoints and doesn't take roll so no need to go to class.
Where do I start! He's amazing! Posts notes online don't buy book. Gives extra credit at end of semester! He's so sweet and nice and he cares for his students, u can tell he has a passion for teaching! Try to get him quickly cuz his class always gets filled up! Made me think of life differently & love sociology! I'd recommend for everyone!
Easiest A of my life. He doesn't take attendance, there are 4 exams and that is all that goes into your grade. No need to get the textbook, no need to show up to class (I went 5 or 6 times during the entire semester), if you study the power points he posts online you will pass with flying colors.
Great professor! (GO TEAM CARTER!) If you study the Powerpoints, you will definitely get an A. Easy class. He is also a fan of "none of the above" answers on exams - so beware! Make sure you know the material, so that you know FOR SURE that the answer is not listed in the options!
He' s a great professor who loves his job. He gives 4 test and 1 term paper. For his tests he gives 40 questions from the lectures and 10 from the readings. You must study if you want to pass the class. Some of the lectures are quite long but he makes them interesting.
He reads everything off a power point. SOO much for you to remember. In some test there is about 100 slides if not more that you have to remember. 4 test and 1 ten page paper.
Definitely take professor carter. He has great energy and soc 250 was very interesting test are easy he replies instantly to emails. Great class ! Great professor ! Wish I hadn't taken his class on Friday because personally don't like Friday classes.
4 tests and he gives extra credit. final not cumulative. You DO NOT need the book. all you have to do it memorize the power points for each test. Questions are very simple and easy. If you have a good memory I suggest you take this class. Mr. Carter is a very nice and funny man, like a giant teddy bear, he curves all tests if the class needs it.
Professor is great with his lectures. Very clear in his grading. Has one extra credit assignment. It's tough because he only has four exams and they're tough as they're only 50 questions and usually cover 3-4 lectures and 2-3 chapters in the book. You really really have to study to pass. Participation doesn't matter.
This class was easy for me though lectures were long since the class was only Fridays. You need to devote a lot of time to studying for the test since it's all about memorization. I got an A by doing flash cards and taking them wherever I went, I also read the book to better understand. I got a B on the first test and for the rest I got A's
Great Professor. He is funny and loves the subject. I enjoyed his lectures, you learn a lot. He is very straightforward in lecture. He truly cares for his students. He curves exams based on how the class did overall. Love him!! Best prof ever!
Professor Carter's class is amazing! Would definitely take again. He puts all his lecture slides on Moodle, which has everything you need to know for the test, plus the readings. Dont need to go to class, but his lectures are interesting and goes into more detail. Dont need book, unless you want a further understanding. Curves tests. 3% EC offered.
You have 4 tests worth 25% of your grade each and that determines your grade. I got a C on the 1st one because I was lazy and did not study, studied very hard on the next 3 and got 2 B's and 1 A. Finished the class with a B but I could have done better if I studied for the first test. Tests are curved but not by a lot. Easy class overall take it.
I loved this class. The material was interesting and Professor Carter's humor made class better. You can tell he knows what he's talking about. He's very approachable as well. There's a sign in sheet so unless you wanna lose points, I suggest showing up. It's not dreadful anyway.
He's the toughest grader that I have had thus far and I am a straight A student. Summer Seminar is based on timed in-class essays. He expects 3 essays to be done in 2 hrs and that they be COMPLETELY THOROUGH. I found that hard to achieve in such a short time. Everyone I asked got a C in this class. He needs to cut back on the essays. It's too much
Easiest A that I have had at CSUN! The grading scale is based on 4 tests worth 100 points each. I wound up getting all A's on my exams and the semester has not ended yet. It is not required to go to class. Michael Carter's lectures are elaborate. He says that you could meet your potential "girlfriend/boyfriend". That alone is a good hint of advice.
Dr. Carter is an amazing professor! The course is based on 4 exams all throughout the semester. The book isn't mandatory because everything you need to know is explained WAY better on the in-class slides. I recommend going to class because it helps when he explains the subject upfront. He cares about making sure everyone understands the subject!
Dr. Carter is an amazing professor! I would defiantly recommend. Although his lectures are heavy, by studying his power points you'll be fine. He has 4 test per semester, 1 extra credit assignment and does not take role. Attendence is beneficial for your self. He engages with the class and make the heavy lectures very interesting!
My favorite professor of my whole freshman year. Easiest class ever, only 4 tests and they're all based off of his lectures. His lectures are all on moodle so no need to go to class unless you like the classroom atmosphere. Do not buy the text book, you'd be wasting money. Take his class!! I learned so much
Carter is amazing. You have to study for his exams but as long as you show up to class you should be able to understand the material. You do not need the book. There is a small extra credit assignment but his grades are based on 4 exams.
Fri 3hr morning class. 4 MC 20% each, 20% group essay. For me the way the professor relates the material to everyday life and gives a reality check to the class. he encourages you to question why the world is the way it is. Or maybe this is just me thinking that. But the class is very doable and can trigger you to think about life in general.
His lectures are good because it goes really in depth, so there is no need to buy the book. Also, he posts his lectures online usually in case you miss class. He made the topic interesting with stories and examples. I would definitely recommend his class. Tests make up the grade, but they are easy if you listen and go over lecture.
I took his class in Summer which was pretty fast. A lot of lectures to cover and in seminars you need to watch movie and doing in class essay. You have a choice to complete your essay answers at home or in class. He curved the grading. I passed his class with a lot of hard work, and in the end one Term paper that also he curved the grade.
He's honestly one of the best professors I've had at CSUN so far. He gives you readings in the textbook but he doesn't grade you or test you on them so the book isn't really necessary unless you want to learn sociology in depth for yourself. His class is only 4 exams based on the lectures so don't miss class. Study hard!
I would absolutely recommend taking any one of his classes even if it's not for credit, hands down one of the best professors I've had. It is a lecture class, but very captivating and attendance is not required, but go if you want to pass his tests which are the only components to your grade. He's inspired me to look more into Soc. Don't need book
Very good teacher, his lectures are great and he explains the slides very well to make them understandable. All exams are multiple choice and based solely on the powerpoints and readings. Very easy, straightforward exams. Don't bother buying the book.
Great professor, very good at what he does. Clearly cares about his students and makes it very relatable. The class is baed of four exams, final is not cumulative. He's one of the best soc professors at CSUN. Very intelligent and has a very reasonable personality. Take him!
He bases all his test (there are only four) off of the readings and lectures. If you get a general sense of the readings and make a Quizlet for the lectures then you're good to go. I definitely recommend going to class, but if you skip a few times it's no big deal. He's really done to Earth and there's no homework, except the readings.
Book is not required. Very interesting and fun class. This class is really easy as soon as you study for the 4 midterms. He gives his own notes instead of the book so everything is very clear. I got 100% from all 4 tests.
Hes an amazing teacher. The class is based on 4 exams. The final isnt cumulative which is good. The exams are all based on his PowerPoints which are on moodle so its okay if you miss class. He curves every test.
No book needed. His class was solely on his lecture notes. Only four tests, no other assignments to help boost grade. Cool guy, but you really need to apply yourself, didn't really study much and that really showed, if you sincerely study at least for two whole days before a test you'll do great trust me.
Professor Carter is amazing, his lectures are interesting! Very traditional lecture class; no essays, classwork, midterms, or final, just 4 exams which are 50 multiple choice questions. All the lecture slides are on canvas so attendance is not mandatory. However I did better on the exams when I showed up. Just study the slides and you'll pass.
Professor Carter really brings the material to life. His lectures aren't stale and you can tell he's having a great time while teaching. There are only 4 tests and the final isn't cumulative; as long as you're able to read through the PPTs and the few readings we have online you'll be fine for the tests.
Professor Carter is amazing sociology professor. He goes over the lectures in class, and if you miss a day the lectures are all posted online. Attendance is not mandatory, but I do better on the tests if I attend class. He only has four exams which your grade is based on. Study the lecture slides and do the readings and you will be just fine.
One of the best professors at Csun. I was afraid the class would be difficult or boring but prof. Carter is pretty funny and makes lectures enjoyable, the tests arent hard if you study and he actually made me consider majoring in sociology. Amazing professor , take him if you can!
This class is very content heavy. Professor Carter tries his best to make the material easier to understand. There are 4 exams, readings and an extra credit opportunity. Highly recommend!
Great professor! I took Dr. Carter during the summertime was able to attend throughout the 6 weeks of the semester. His lectures are straight from the exams, seminars are important to attend in order to pass your class and get your mandatory points. He is so compassion teaching and very open-minded. I highly recommend this sociology professor. :)
Dr. Carter is honestly amazing. He makes the material fun and interactive. If you take good notes and review them a couple times before the test you will be fine. Also make sure to do the readings that he puts on canvas, they are on the test. I would suggest going to class because he breaks down the concepts really well.
I don't understand how people don't pass this class. All you have to do is study the lecture slides. Make a quizlet from the lecture slides and just study that and you will get an A. Extra credit and curves all tests. Pretty good lectures and he is funny.
Prof. Carter really opens your eyes about different views. He is really charismatic and really loves sociology. Take him, you'll learn a lot. This class is heavily based on lectures and does not provide study guides. Just study/ memorize every slide and you'll be fine.
Honestly an amazing professor. He is a funny dude and is very passionate about sociology. The course is based off of 4 exams only, all based on the slides. I never bought the book and got a decent grade in the class without it. Learned some cool stuff throughout the course, definitely recommend.
Grade is based off four exams. Dont bother coming to class since the exam schedule is posted online and he just reads off the slides that are already on canvas. Gives extra credit but wont round. Ignores emails and left me at a borderline grade. He's also boring
He is a good professor. He's really funny and explains the material clearly! You don't really have to go to class, just study the slides. Grades are based off 4 exams solely. Easy A if you study the material or attend class everyday! Gives extra credit and overall really interesting class! Would recommend! (p.s. you don't really need the book!)
Your grade is determined on how you do on a total of 4 tests. There is no homework. The class is pretty much all based on lectures, but his form of teaching makes the material not be boring. He is good at giving examples that relate back to us as students in the real world.
Carter is great. His lectures are so interesting and the tests are pretty straightforward as long as you study ahead of time. There is a lot of information to take in, but studying ahead of time and understanding the information as you move along is key. However, if you end up having to cram for a test, he gives heavy curves and is very reasonable.
He makes you think about society in different way! His lectures are interesting, but your grade is only based on tests and just two extra credit, not too much so know your lecture very well!!
Class is based off 4 exams. Im a bad test taker so its a really hard class. Its not what you think it is. The lectures are so long and the only way to pass the test is to memorize the slides. There like 100 slides per chapter
Took professor Carter for Soc. 150 during fall semester of 2019 & he is the best! You do not necessarily have to go to class but when I was absent I felt bad because I felt like I let him down in a way. His lectures are incredibly easy to understand and he explains concepts in a way that keeps you in engaged & made me reconsider my major, love him
Based on 4 exams. I did bad on one exam and lowered my grade (did not study) but it was still a great class to take. I learned a lot. Definitely study if you want a high grade. You do not have to attend class but still, do if you want a better understanding of the material. Otherwise, study the slides.
Prof. Carter is one of CSUN's best professors. It's an easy A but you also have to put the work in. every thing on the lecture is on the test. 4 exams throughout the whole year, and a few extra credit. 1st exam i got a 26/50.. because I didn't study and thought I could cheat since it's a big lecture class. 2nd exam I got a 46/50 because I studied.
I love him. very educated person he taught me so much. the class only has 4 tests and no hw but if you just show up to class pay attention then review ur notes you'll get an A. he doesn't trick you on tests. His lectures aren't boring and he's funny. i wish he can be my prof for everything
Your grade is based on 4 exams; none are cumulative. Exams are based exactly on the lectures and canvas readings. It's not mandatory to come to class because he uploads the powerpoints anyway, but he involves real-life examples that make the class more engaging. Make sure to do the readings no matter how much you don't want to.
Terrible at explaining things tests you specifically off of all the slides (there are a lot) Doesn't make sense with lectures very hard to understand. I learned nothing from this professor very upset with how he teaches.
Honestly hated this class. Wasnt very communicative towards his students. Bubbly attitude but did not give any helpful extra credit. Just a small percentage bump if you did a survey. One low test can bump your grade from an A to a C and is a lot of material to cover. Highly recommend not taking.
Grade by 4 exams. Keeps you engaged in his lectures. Exams are based entirely off the lectures and canvas readings, so if you take the time to review them you'll be fine.
Took this Professor during Covid so the semester is all online. Carter gives so many lectures, chapters, and essays to take notes on. Regards to the test, you have exactly 30 minutes to take them, once you answer the question, you are not able to go back to check questions or look at any of your previous questions. Gives 30 min. for 25 questions.
Professor Carter gives so many notes on his lectures that you need to know for 25 question quizzes that you are only given 30 mins for, which is honestly not enough time with the way he words the questions. 6 quizzes are in the grade book, and that's it and doing bad on one will make it hard to pull your grade back up. He's not helpful either:(
listen to prerecorded lectures and then take 6 quizzes. Only downside is that there's 30 minutes for 25 questions and you can't go back to previous questions. Lots of studying/taking notes if you want to pass. My electricity went out the day we had a quiz and he let me take it later for full credit, so he's pretty understanding and flexible.
do not take this professor. he gives out so many lectures and theres only 6 quizzes. there is no homework, midterm, and final. theres 25 questions for 30 mins and its not enough time. just dont take him.
Hes alright. He just doesnt give enough time to study and its a heavy lecture. There is only 6 quizzes and one extra credit if you do it. Its a lot of studying, and you dont really have time for it.
He seems like he enjoys what he teaches, but lacks empathy. Make sure you don't get in a car accident or have a family member pass on the day of a quiz! He won't let you retake the quizzes under any circumstances. Lectures are boring and he talks the whole duration, but quizzes are online and easy if you watch the youtube videos.
There are a couple quizzes, do the readings and you'll for sure pass. There is an extra credit assignment that helped me go from an A- to an A+. There are many readings but it is all easy overall.
In 2022, Cultural competency/humility should be the bare minimum. The last thing students need is apathetic instructors who refuse to work with their students, especially during extraneous circumstances. Minority students deserve Professors who believe in social equity & are aware of the systemic inequalities that pose valid challenges to us.
Summer class. consist of quizzes and one term paper at the end of the semester. Super easy if you pay attention. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. He is very thorough, if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask.
It's not a good idea to take classes from him! The quizzes won't be retaken and the lectures are boring since he won't allow retaking them. It's pretty kind to hard because nothing a new learning of everything. There quiz for 30 min is so not enough! please don't take him.
Teacher graded based on quizzes only. Lets students who missed a quiz do makeups but students who do poorly on a quiz and want to make it up - too bad.
Do not take this class if you are taking it as an elective (not a sociology major) or taking more than 12 units. His lectures are unbearable. Only has 6 quizzes a semester and is not negotiable or understanding whatsoever. All quizzes have trick questions not even included in his lectures. I never got a C at CSUN until now, consider this a warning!
Class was fully online and based off of pre-recorded lectures and a textbook. There is a total of six quizzes and those are the only assignments for this class.
His class was easy. Only 6 quizzes, nothing else. Quizzes based on the lectures and readings. Quizzes 25 questions in 30 minutes which is very doable if you study. Take this class. It isn't stressful at all. Do not buy the book, you won't use it at all. Overall, this class isn't as hard as people make it seem. Gives a chance to make up missed quiz.
Easy B, but not an easy A.. Even after reading the material and listening to the lectures, I could not get 100% for the quizzes because of how they were worded. Other than that, his video lectures are interesting to listen to, especially if you like sociology.
Very easy A! There were "weekly readings" but you can definitely get away with not reading... Only 6 quizzes make up your entire grade. Very chill GE, recommend this prof!
Wasn't that hard of class. All you need to do is quizzes which have 25 questions, although you cannot go back onto the previous question, which is based of the lecture slides and some reading that is assigned. Mostly I got 23-25/25 which isn't so bad.
So this was an Asynchronous Class and there are 6 quizzes (which are like Tests) there are 25 questions you must study its from the lecture (if you take good notes) and also there are also reading quesitons in the quiz. But his Modules on Canvas is very organized so don't worry. Amazing Professor Highly Recommended
Completely online course. There are 6 quizzes with a makeup one if you miss one of those 6. Sends emails every week/ if there's upcoming quiz. Keep up with readings and note taking and you will be good. Really recommend this professor.
I wish I never took this class it's the only C I got EVER! It's super unfair because he allows students to miss a quiz and make up for it but doesn't allow students to take the makeup quiz in replacement for a low score quiz . I don't understand how he thinks this makes sense. Doesn't care about you and your grade at all! AVOID THIS CLASS
There are only 5 tests and your grade is based on that. Pretty hard to get a good grade even if you just mess up once. The lectures are interesting. Do listen to the lectures, read the readings. If you do the work you should be fine. I wish there was some make up assignment or just any other assignment other than the tests.
Not a hard class but you need to study your notes. Since there are very few assignments, I feel like that is why people complain because you need to do good on the all of them or your grade will go down drastically.
Great professor, very interesting. Every class is a lecture and there are 4 tests throughout the semester thats it! There are no assignments your whole grade is based on exams. I love this style of teaching would definitely reccomend!!
I loved this class!! No homework and no assignments. Only thing that goes into your grade are exams. 4 exams all worth the same amount so you have to study a lot. No final and no quizzes
