overall a good teacher but totally opposite of his last name....no smiles, not at all jolly .
Relaxed prof. I learned a lot about Germanians. One extremely easy essay, easy mid-term and final. You can get a B with little effort.
I love this guy. He is a good prof. Very helpful. He really cares about students success.
He taught us in the spring ... made the course really interesting .. great prof!
One of the best profs at Ryerson. He's just so relaxed and doesn't let his students stress too much...mainly because he is very clear and presents the material in a very organized manner. Trust me...you gotta have him!
Monotone Man. His voice will put you to sleep, but if in some magical way you stay away, you'll actually learn something.
Everything you need to know is clearly laid out in his notes he places on blackboard (don't bother with textbook). His tests/exams are clear and fair - he gives options! Amazing. A really good teacher, would definitely take another one of his classes.
A professor with absolute expertise in the area of economics, you truly could not ask for more. Very (fact establishing) polemic academic.
This man knows the text by heart. Can recite it while pacing the width of the class, in a trance, the string of the overhead screen that he walks thru doesn't faze him. Never smiles. Very organised but mind numbing
He's the best prof i've had
Good 'ol Jolly. He tends to read out of the textbook A LOT!
very helpful note
Very easy prof, just study his notes and a B- is guaranteed.
This guy screwed me up in the final exam! Questions look easy but have lots of traps. Better read carefully.
He has a lot too say, and it really helps you grasp the history and events that have shaped the current economic world. You have to be prepared to stay awake and take notes, but if you do, you'll ace the course. I got and A in the course, because he was so through in the material he covered.
Not the most flamboyant guy you'll ever meet--frankly, a bit on the "cure for insomnia side". BUT--the man knows his stuff! Do your best to stay awake during class, follow his instructions and 'not-so-subtle-hints' as to what "may" be on the exams. Your mark will reflect the effort you exert.
His lecture style is a little dry but he puts the theories into context and "adds value" to your knowledge in this way. Tests were fairly easy. He is a nice guy too. :)
Good prof, but not great. Seems to be a good chap. His lectures are dry though, and I think he spends a little too much time on certain topics than I'd like. It's not a difficult course though. The tests are 40% MC and 60% short answer, I think (can't remember it that well).
this prof has no vocal range - he sounds like a robot which makes micro-ec even more painfully boring
jolly..don't be fooled by his name. Not even the slightest bit jolly. He pretty much reads off of his slides. Class is really dull and boring most of the time. He's OKAY
This Prof is like a Robot, so boring, he just reads the slides, I manage to get a b- , He gives out no assignments or any free marks, just 2 test and exam, he goes throughs the slides to fast in my opionion, hes a nice guy but attending class wont help, Self learning is the only way to pass, Test are Hard just a bit tricky, Exam was not that bad
He knows his stuff, but... has no idea how to get students to listen. extremely boring, but try to listen because what he says you will need. More enthusiasm would make him good.
Smart prof who provides great lecture notes if you manage to listen. Pretty boring and monotone, but stick it out, you'll be glad you did when the midterm rolls around. Needs to be more assertive w/students.. you literally have to be speaking as loud as possible before he tells you to keep it down. Sit near the front and bring a coffee.
he's very helpful in getting u into sleep..ZzZ..(even coffee won't work)
I think he is the dryest professor i have ever met. His lectures are the exact pages of the textbook and never changes his emotions. But his tests were all multiple choice and pretty straight forward and he lets us keep the tests.
this prof is speaks one tone from beginning till end. i went to every class, yet i still think i learned all the material by myself, because i can't keep myself awake in his classes. he can't really control his class tho, the students are really rude to him, which i think is unfair to him, since he's never picky and he's an overall nice professor.
He is a nice person but he is very boring. He's like a robot reading off the slides. He WILL make you fall asleep. Going to his lectures is a waste of time. All this semester, I read the book.
He sucked, basically
Dont bother going to class. his slides are word for word from the textbook, so read it on ur own. the assignments are not bad, but time consuming. super monotone voice, and puts u to sleep esp at 8am in the morning.. bring a laptop to keep u occupied. exam was insane!!!
Attending his class was a complete waste of time
if you have him...change before its too late...or else you will regret! he WILL make you fall alseep for sure....
History teacher=BOOORING! dont take his class, drop it! take it w/ others! very hard marker, he sucks.
Avoid, very low class average (~55%), boring lectures, his powerpoint notes useless, gotta learn everything from the textbook
DO NOT take any of his classes, coffee doesn't help to stay awake, he takes notes from book and pastes them directly into powerpoint and reads it all one tone. Test are VERY hard, non life situations, seems like every answer is right.
Rds off powerpoint notes. Switch to a diff prof. bc it's clueless if u don't understand ecn txtbk. Definitely buy the Study Guide book bc questions are similar on midterm and exam
Impossible midterm and final exam.Class average 55%.My mark is D.Switch him before it's too late!!!
bring a pillow!!
Some how managed to make one of the most interesting economics classes into the absolute worst. Go to class, listen to what he says, and do the Problem sets - they are the same on the midterm and FINAL.
pillow is neccesary for his classes
Regardles of the poor comments, I think he changed this year because he posted all the possible exam questions online for both midterm and finals. But his lectures are really boring (monotone session) so yea either bring coffee, pillow, or laptop to class or don't brother attend it at all. And remember to buy all the texbook and course packs!
I absolutely loved him. He is so nice and helps you out a lot when you need it. not a difficult marker unless you are stupid.
he is a great professor, he is kinda boring, but u don really have to stay in class all the time, but if u doo, stay in the very front, because he speaks very quietly. However his exams are soo similar to the sample exams he gives!! jus answer those exam banks, you will be fine! got a B+ :D
Can't hear his lectures and speaks in a monotone voice. Had to rely on learning from the textbook.
Hardcore exams and midterms. Amazing guy, very helpful, extremely knowledgeable in Economics. Lectures are amazing. He just knows more than any other prof in Ryerson about economics - he's a consultant to the city. But his exam and midterms are just ridiculously hard, you have to know entire book
Super boringgg.. bring a pillow or laptop if you go to class. His slides are taken right out of the textbook so attendance is really not needed. Just read the text and you'll be fine. And he wore the same shirt all semester. hahha what a guy
Although He has that monotone voice, if you listen hard he makes good points but super boring. He's a nice guy who bell curves, plus the tests are easy. just read the book, thats it. Ps. he tendsto wear the same shirt over and over again.
midterms are hard! however he does bellcurve some of the midterms if marks are really low! Overall a good guy
Very nice man and is more than willing to answer any questions but can't describe how incredibly boring he is. Mainly reads word for word off the slides with absolutely no expression. Attendance is not necessary to get a good mark, just read chapters and power points.
such boring prof!!!!but he is a nice guy!he is felexible!
Prepare for a borefest. He speaks quietly and in a monotone voice, reads off powerpoint slides. You do not need to attend class since he provides the powerpoint slides on blackboard. Fair marker, the midterm and exam may have some wording that is a bit confusing but fair overall. Got a B+ with minimal efforts :)
Boring!!!!! But fair marker
hes too boring, but hes a nice guy
Nice guy. His midterms and final were extremely easy(all from the power-pnts). Try working hard on the term essay cause that could be the only reason of your low grade.
very boring..just reads of slides which is useless
Reads off slides, so you're better off learning from the textbook. He is very helpful though if you do ask him questions.
I can't really tell if he likes teaching or not haha. he's pretty boring but I'm sure he's bored as well, he is super knowledgeable and its a basic course. I didn't go to lectures but I actually liked reading his book, that's all you need to do well on the tests. if you're interested in economics you will like him and the course.
Best. Professor. Ever. Very relaxed, tests are from slides which are quite clear and reliable. Very knowledgeable, very helpful.
He's pretty boring and I felt he marked a little hard on the paper but other than that I enjoyed the book, and liked that the course didn't have a lot of math in it. I would recommend him because you only need to read the book and you can still do well. He's a pretty chill proff, give him a chance- he is pretty straightforward for the exam reviews.
He's really monotonous and boring, but he's a really fair marker and he makes it clear what you need to do in order to do well. I rarely attended lectures because the slides and handouts he puts online are really helpful and the textbook is clear. The class was only graded on 2 tests and a paper, so it was easy to do well.
Hard grader. Might fail this one
Great Guy, only reasons hes a little unclear is the language barrier. Cant stress what a nice guy he is, his book is great too.
one of the best profs in terms of lecturing... but he is boring
had to take his class
Great teacher and nice guy, people will say he is boring but if they think the history of world economy is boring they have no business in an economics program. Always there to help, even if you ask questions about other econ course. Go see him during office hours, he is always free and will give you mini lessons on the spot. Extremely intelligent.
To be honest, Jolly is actually one of the smarter economic profs at Ryerson. Although his monotoned voice may bore you to death in his lectures, just visit him during his office hours. If you visit his office hours he'll know that you actually care about the course and therefore easy grade.
He's extremely boring and monotoned. You have to really pay attention in lecture to get the most of what hes saying. I skipped every class and passed with a B. All the slides are on Blackboard.
Honestly, his lectures were so BORING. But mostly because the course is boring itself, i couldn't imagine any other prof making the material any thing but boring. But overall, he is super helpful and always there to answer questions. If you don't need this class, DO NOT TAKE IT lol.
He is a really great prof! Explains things simply and clearly. The only thing I didnt like was having to take this course 1st semester 1st year of my program before I took intro to macro and could really appreciate what I was learning to the fullest extent.
He's really knowledgeable, knows the material well. However, I still never went to class. MONOTONE. It's really hard to stay focused during his lectures, I felt like I was disrespecting him because he would catch me zoning out all the time, so i just stopped going. Barely studied for midterm and final and did ok, wrote my paper in 2 hrs and did ok.
If you ask for help on homework, he will help you. But the the course work taught was really boring and one of the hardest out of all my classes.
paper 25% midterm 25% final 50%... final exam was ridiculously hard compared to the midterm but if you read the textbook and make sure you understand the concepts, you'll be fine
Jolly is a very knowledgeable prof and knows what hes talking about but his lectures are boring. Hes very monotone and does not get the class engaged with the material. His midterm average was a 47 (had to bellcurve) his paper gave no direction on what to write about (only after when he gave the rubric back). Its a great deal of info but very borin
I took this because I took ecn in highschool so it was an easy credit. Professor Jolly is literally the farest thing from jolly, he is monotoned and makes you want to sleep. I didn't go to any lectures, I just read the textbook and got a 70 on the mid term and essay.
He is not an easy prof, but he is definitely not hard. This class is pretty dry itself and he is INCREDIBLY boring, very monotone and just reads from his VERY long PowerPoints. Class feels like it will never end, but you won't miss anything by not going. Just be sure to take the time before tests to go through the slides. Pro: He is really nice!
He is a real tough grader, but that doesn't mean you can't get an A or A+ in his course- you just need to really work hard for it. How he teaches is a bit boring due to his tone of voice, but the material of the class is super interesting. If you want to get an A, come to class prepare - read the chapter before going to the lecture.
This professor uses power points and explains the slides. He posts his slides on d2l. The exams were pretty easy. If you can just download an older version of the textbook. Just add explanations on his slides and study them. Don't spend too much time on the details (except for the short answer topics) just know the information in general.
He is a nice prof, but when i wrote the finals i thought i did very well. When i saw my grade i was disappointed. He is a very difficult grader. the way he makes the questions are really confusing and annoying.
He's a nice man but you don't really need to show up to his lectures to learn global econ. You just need to read the textbook. He marks easily with essays but he's a tough grader when it comes to the midterm/final exam. Don't worry if you fail the difficult midterm, just do well on the essays and the final exam.
If you show up and pay attention during the lectures there's no reason to read the textbooks
he is so helpful and will give you the feedback for your work very specifically. The lecture is not too tough. if you follow the slide and the work, 100% above A-. I highly recommend anyone to take his course.
He won't stop talking in lectures. Be ready to hear every life event and nothing about the actual material. He gets off topic way to much and makes the lectures dry and boring. Read the slides and stay home.
A nice prof who will help you out after class and gives enough time/chances to fulfill the online assignment too. He's just really monotone when he speaks, so sit in the front so you can hear him better (might mumble).
First day of class I decided to sit in the back, huge mistkae. He talks in monotone and doesn't speak very loudly. His voice puts me to sleep. Aside from that I found the class very difficult. I've always been intrested in this topic but the class was mediocre. Would not take this class again.
M. Jolly seems like a cool guy. Granted, we only saw about 3 minutes of his face a week. He only posts slides, with short introductory videos to go with them. At the beginning, I was annoyed. But he's a fair grader and the material is straight forward. He's a really smart guy and I wish I could have taken his class in person.
