Nice enough guy, but not very clear when helping you solve a problem. He is also really strict about attendance!
Joy has a wierd sense of humor that i find funny. he teaches very well and is always there to help you outside of class.

His jokes get VERY annoying. The content is straightforward and rather easy overall. If you know what a mouse is, you'll be bored to tears. He also gets frustrated when more than one person has a question at a time. Talks about the "glory days" of his life in the military too often.
he is incredibly strict, and demands a great attention to detail which is unrealistic for college students at 8am on a monday
the class was frustratingly simple, but I got tired of his holier than thou speeches
Great teacher who definetly knows his stuff. His jokes are funny if you have enough world-wide knowledge to understand them. He will teach you a lot and if you miss class he'll meet with you and show you what you missed. I would recomend him to anyone. very knowledgable guy.
Class is boring at times. Some assignments are difficult due to inadequate explanation, and don't miss some classes; you could miss critical details. I believe we had 4 100pt quizes and a final which was in a group! Good class, and I enjoyed it! He has dry humor, but heck it's only one semester!
He says random stuff(like talks about cycling) but the class teaches you a lot and you can tune him out sometimes, if you want, but he's really helpful outside of class. (He's pretty much the hottest teacher on campus and wouldn't I love to see him in his bike short)
Not hot in his biking shorts - in fact that would be a grotesque sight. He is a good teacher and is an easy grader for the most part. It's a required class and Joy knows that; take him and you will have a good time in class and learn a lot!
M Joy is such a nice guy. Some people think he is dry, and just hands out a lot of worksheets and busy work, but truly, such a great teacher and so helpful if anyone needs help. Always there for the students, and always willing to give test reviews which are helpful. If do the work you'll get an A.

Funny guy, but prepare for his agonizing tests. They sometimes can be more difficult then one would expect. Learned quite a bit in this class.
Its basic stuff, but his easy in class examples are not even close to the homework. You just have to understand the basics of the programs.
Great teacher. Lets you turn in the homework anytime during the day its due. Can come to later class if you miss it in the morning. Some of the stuff is a bit hard to understand, but he's always ready to help you out if you need it. Overall, good class.
This prof is super cool. as long as you pay attention, you should be set for the semester.
He thinks he's a lot funnier than he is and he's a jerk when you ask for help. Some of the tests are hard, but there's so many points in the class that it's not too difficult. Easy final project.
This guy is kinda weird, but a good teacher. He seems sort of arrogant, but you will learn a lot in the class and it is not hard.
Meanest teacher ever. Tests are almost impossible for the average student
Hard, not helpful
He is a very odd professor. The material is very easy though. You should get an A in this class as long as you don't miss class. He can be rude to the students he doesn't like so get on his good side.
He thinks he is hilarious but he really is not funny at all. He is a computer Nazi and monitors your screen throughout the class. If you are not on the same thing as he is it is a "warning" and he takes off 10% of your final grade. He sucks but he is required if you are a Business makor so it is easy enough to get through
The class is very vital for the business major because much of today's business world is located on the computer. However, I find it ironic that Professor Joy is the one teaching the class. The lectures he provides the class are very boring and not very helpful. He constantly stops in the middle of his lectures to comment on an irrelevant subject.
As a fellow classmate remarked...his tests crazy!!! If you do the homework you can get a decent grade, but the truth is he is very unapproachable. Also I saved my test ...and for some reason it didn't show up in his lil file thing. Then I got accused of pushing cancel instead of save...I'm not that computer retarded.
Useful material but not a great teacher. Not very understanding when asking for help, it is recommended to get help from him by making an appointment after class. Pay attention to detail. Tough tests.
tough teacher, doesn't spend as much times on things you want, but rather on things he wants, tough grader. Don't be on internet during class.
Actually, I really liked this class. I found the subject matter interesting, and he is very friendly and helpful when you ask. Tests are killer because it's hard to predict what's on them, but if you review a little and remember things he covered in class, it's possible to do well. Plus the homework is easy and can make up for poor test grades.
Joy is very boring and difficult and expects you to already know a lot before entering. Be ready to struggle and work together to figure it out.
Get a different teacher if you can. His lessons are often hard to follow and he rarely gives an explanation to them. The tests are incredibly difficult even if you can follow what you're doing in class. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!
Oh Joy...Well lets see, once you get pass the fact that his voice is very painful to listen to, that he spends the first 15 minutes talking about random bs, the fact that he can't hear you EVER, that he sounds and looks like that teacher off south park, he's really not that bad. DO NOT EVER GO ON THE INTERNET DURING CLASS. tests are hard!
Eccentric in a nerdy way, but can be funny. Very nit-picky about stuff you turn in, formulas need to be precise. In general not too bad, but if you need help find a smart classmate rather than going to him.
He is horrible. Horrible horrible and unclear. Its really difficult to stand him. This makes everything really hard. I tried so hard in this class but couldn't understand. Get a different teacher.
Terrible teacher. Avoid if possible. Subject is not terribly hard but Joy does his best to make it a huge pain in the butt. Very obnoxious, unhelpful, and not very understanding. He is out of touch with reality. Incredibly boring and as its a computer class you'll be tempted to browse the internet. Don't do it!! He'll screw you over.
Joy is a great professor if you just give him the chance- visit him after class if you're having trouble. Assignments to me were harder than his exams and can easily make up for bad exam scores. His exams are not hard if you consistently go to class and take a while to study for. But how else are you really going to learn the material?
He is the most random and possibly annoying prof ever. He talks about the MOST random crap. The assignments were WAYYYYY harder than what he went over in class. The final project is a pain in the ass. Take truhler if possible.
Joy is a great teacher. After his class, you will be able to use Excel and Access well. Tests are easy as long as you pay attention and assignments can be tough, but he is always willing to help you.
Wouldn't take this guy again. I did learn how to use excel, access, etc. but he just makes it too hard to learn the material. His tests are a toss up, you never know what's going to be on them which seems to be everybody's biggest complaint from my class. find somebody else.
Good teacher, hard class. Pay attention and you should be fine. Hard to know what will be on tests so know how to do all HW and in class assignments well. He is always willing to help if you are having trouble on anything, just ask. DO NOT surf the internet or do other homework during class (auto 10% off grade) Overall good prof
he knows his stuff but the class is very difficult and tests are even harder if you are not a computer savvy person. The tests are practically impossible to do well on but if you pay attention, go in to get help, do all the homework, and know exactly what you are doing then you should do well. He is a super nice person the class is just hard.
Most nasally voice ive ever heard and loves to hear himself talk...hence while the entire hour is him blabbing on about some dumb excel thing. Homework is way harder than the examples he goes over in class. If you cant do one part of the test, you are screwed for the rest. If you ask him for help he will just talk about something you didnt ask abou
horrible class. tests are impossible. if you mess up on one little tiny part of the test, you fail the entire thing. he goes on and on and on and on about everyting that you could possibly imagine. most of the time he is just playing around on the computer screne and the class had no idea what he is talking about. take a differnt teacher.
Business computing. Joy is always cracking lame jokes, just ignore them. He seems like he is annoyed sometimes. Class is well structured. Not a lot of homework. Three tests, that you should study for. Not a type of class that you can figure it out for yourself. Not a hard class. DO NOT buy the book, its really not necessary. Recommend fo sho
LOVE LOVE LOVE Professor Joy!! although the tests are hard and the assignments are challenging, he is sooo helpful! If you go in for office hours he will sit there and explain step by step what to do! :) He's also funny and friendly, even in an 8am class!
This class is SO easy. I'm pretty sure it'll stop being required in a few years once the university understands that we've all used computers before. I spent 80% of it on facebook and got an A
Professor Joy is not a great teacher, but you will definitely figure out the material he teaches you because the concepts are very straightforward. He goes off on tangents a lot and is very long-winded. The group assignment he gives the class is vague and very drawn-out. He often holds class late without realizing it. He is very nice though.
Joy is a great teacher. He oftern has trouble in the ratings due to the fact that people often struggle with his class. However, the class itself is not that bad. What causes problems is peoples past experiences with excel and access. Don't let the ratings fool you, just take the extra time to go talk to him and he will help you out. Easy A.
Yeah he cracks lame jokes and yeah hes a little bit out there but he is very helpful and explains everything to you. You can go see him during office hours and hes happy to help you out. Easy class if you take the time to do the work and study.
For a required class that teaches you how to check your email....I think there are two teachers that teach the course, and you want Joy. He is strict and makes super lame jokes but is moderately helpful if you have a question.
This class can be hard if you don't go in for office hours when you need help. If you go in he is extremely helpful. We never used the book in class, it was all outside reading. The class can be extremely boring, but I found some of the material helpful/useful.
Joy is very unclear in directs for assignments, and his class is super boring. If you pay attention to his lectures though, assignments and tests are a piece of cake.
The class was pretty simple. In the beginning, he gave quizzes every day, but they were pretty easy if you paid attention.
Joy is a great guy. The class is kind of boring, but it is a hard subject to make interesting. Homework assignments can be hard, but not impossible. He is great in office hours and if you go and ask for help on homework he will give you an extension. Tests are easier than the homework. Pop quizzes aren't too bad. The final is an easy group project
He is an all around great guy. He works hard to make sure you understand it, and his homework isn't hard if you pay attention in class. He teaches in a way that is easy to understand, especially if you never used excel before.
Really nice guy! Subject matter can be a bit boring and watch out for several pop quizzes in the first few weeks.
Mr. Joy is a good teacher, but he can be kind of boring. Class material is pretty easy - just pay attention in class and do the homework and you'll be able to do well on the tests/quizzes. He and the subject can be boring but he knows a lot about it and is a fairly nice guy. There is homework most nights and tests every couple of weeks.
The class itself is not too hard, but he expects students to figure things out rather than teaching them how to do something. In office hours he will help a LOT though, and via email, he is easy to keep in touch with and allows you to turn in late work if you need help after class and such!
Terrible professor. Doesn't explain things clearly, makes you figure things out on your own. Goes on power trips, gives preference to students and allows some to turn in HW later while giving 0's to others. Worst professor by far at GU...And he looks like an old version of the Home Alone kid.
Don't buy the textbook, you don't even open it once. Homework is harder than examples in class because he does not cover everything and expects you to figure things out on your own-Google is your best friend...Take a different professor, my friend taught me excel much better than this "professor." Surprised he is still a teacher here.
I would NOT recommend this class! He is the most boring teacher I have ever had. Class runs long EVERYDAY, and he spends the majority of the time just ranting about things completely unrelated to the class. Get any other teacher and you will be better off.
Joy is boring but teaches very straight forward. YOU DO NOT NEED A BOOK!!! Also is you go to his office hours he is supper helpful.
One of the most unique professors you will have- not in a good way. Drops you a letter grade if he catches you doing anything "distracting" such as sending a text. He will then proceed to call it "tough love". The class itself is useful, however the way it is taught isn't the best. Easy to get an A if you put up with his pettiness.
Fairly easy class if you have any prior knowledge of computers at all... Basic Excel work. Joy makes funny comments if you sit in the front and tells stories about his life. Easy class if you pay attention. Tests can be difficult, so make friends with your row
Worst teacher ever. I would say avoid at all costs, but unfortunately he is a required teacher to take. He is pompous, arrogant, and does not explain any of his homework. Tests are not that hard, but only if you have a group effort. Hated him. Took things way too personal and started crying on the first day of class.
He is probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He is unclear in his teachings and he rambles on about pointless things. He also can be very insulting. However, he is very understanding and helpful when you take the time to ask for it. Other than that, I would not recommend this teacher.
When you go into office hours, he does the work for you rather than help you understand the material. He has strict rules, and doesn't bend outside of them, he is a hard grader, and his tests are very difficult, he doesn't go over the test material at all prior to the test date. DO NOT USE PHONE IN CLASS!! HE WILL DROP FINAL GRADE TEN PERCENT!!!!!
He gives about 8 random quizzes typically in the first two weeks. His tests aren't very hard if you pay attention in class, have friends help you who took it before. Also the final raises your grade by a lot and is easy. The book is not used DO NOT waste your money on it.
Michael Joy shouldn't be considered a professor. He doesn't teach anything that relevant. Class is boring and you will want to fall asleep or go on the internet, but don't do it because you will go down a full letter grade. Goes off on random rants about personal stories about the Air Force that are dull and unimportant. Avoid if possible.
Awful teacher. Does not explain anything clearly.
Though the lectures can be boring at times, just pay attention and you will get an A. If you need any help on assignments, he is almost always available to email and you can get a response decently fast. No need to buy the textbook, not needed. If you have questions, you can look up stuff online.
don't take it :(
I don't know why everyone is complaining about Joy. BUSN 111 was definitely the easiest business class I took at GU so enjoy. Just don't be a stupid student; do your work and go into office hours. I had like 110% in the class... The group project in the end sucks but just start way early! Lowest grade I got on a test was a 97% and plenty of EC.
There is a good amount of homework that is very challenging. Especially if your computer is not a PC. He is really rude, but the material is easy to understand. There are a lot of points and it is not hard to get a good grade, just do well on the tests and be ready for pop quizes.
He is a terrible teacher. Great guy. But again... a terrible teacher. His tests are vagualy like the homework he assigns almost every class. He does not give partial credit on any tests. If you miss one character of code you will bomb the tests. This was my hardest class of the semester and it was only a 2 credit class. Final project will save you.
This class really wasn't that bad. Yes he can be very boring and strict at times but you just have to deal with it and you can do well. The one thing I'd say is that although this is a 2 credit course, you need to work hard to do well. There are about 4 tests, a final project, homework, and he gives pop quizzes at the beginning of the year.
Michael Joy is a tough man to win over, and you will undoubtedly dislike him right of the bat. I struggled a lot in his class which caused me to start going into office hours every week. He was always helpful and knew I tried hard. The final project got me up to an A, a grade I didn't have all semester. Needless to say, go to office hours.
People hate on Joy, but I found the class to be fairly easy and the professor to be very helpful. Joy is there for you when you need him to be. Sure, his jokes are a little (a lot) corny, but the guy means well and wants you to succeed. Do the work and you won't have a problem.
This is a very boring class, and Michael Joy is a very boring man. Do not take this class at 8 AM!! Also do not buy the textbook, you do not need it! Make sure to go to class, he takes attendance and there's homework almost everyday, if you don't show up you won't know how to do it. If you go to office hours he basically fixes your homework for you
Gets off topic when giving lectures and leaves you to figure out the homework on your own. Try to avoid taking.
I pride myself on being a smart and competent person who is willing to put in the work. This class is ALL EXCEL, you get excel or you don't. I would not take Joy again because of his interactions with students, including myself. Purely lecture. Office hours are super early in the morning because he has classes all day.
This class is a joke in every sense. The first few weeks of lecture are easy to follow and get a bit more difficult, but the are all very boring to watch. Homework can often times present a challenge as not everything on it is taught in class. Overall you should get a decent grade if you do all your homework, show up to class, and ace the final.
I actually enjoyed this class. He's a little funky but I found it hilarious. This class' easiness is basically about if you get it or not and if you don't he will completely help you and walk through every test or homework assignment with you until you get it. I think if you keep working on it or if you're at all computer savvy you should be fine.
Taking Joy is kind of a right of passage in the busn school. Joy is one of the most condescending teachers I have ever had. This class is all Excel, and while he goes over the basics in class, the homework almost aways is more complicated. If you go into his office hours he will be semi helpful, but will also make you feel like you are an idiot.
Joy is disliked by a lot of people that are not willing to put in the work to succeed. His class is all excel based and gives a lot of real life scenarios. I personally loved his class and it is very important for any business student to know excel. If you are a logical thinker then you'll do very well in his class, but you must pay attention.
Terrible. Goes over concepts once. tests are ridiculously hard. Had 15 people waiting outside his office during office hours EVERY time I showed up, had to skip class to talk to him, not mentioning his office hours start at 7 am. No help. can be understanding if you talk to him, he does accept late work. good luck fam bam
Professor Joy is really helpful and willing to help. I really appreciated having him for this class.
This class was stupid easy. Very basic excel skills, I studied for about a half hour before each exam and got over 100% on every one. He offers a lot of extra credit on each test through random trivia. The class is boring, but it is not hard to get an A.
Exams are extremely difficult. Group project is a ton of work. Didn't find him helpful when I asked for help.
Very nice outside of class. But in class, awful. You are basically taking a class on top of a class. Oh and if you have a mac computer... good luck. He has very little sympathy for work other than his class. He will offer help if you need and will be very nice about it, but will not cut you any slack.
Professor Joy gets a very bad rap as a teacher from his quirky a. It's pretty easy to get behind on work but he is extremely accessible in office hours and very helpfull. Those that have Mac computers, it is very easy to go to a library computer lab to complete assignments and homework. Overall the class was easy and I enjoyed his teaching style
Prof. Joy is extremely boring and rants on about nothing for long periods of time. He comes off like he hates everything (not sure if this is true or not). He makes you do a ton of homework that he doesn't explain in class and group projects are more work than necessary. He also is super picky in the way he grades.
This is my least favorite class I have taken. Prof Joy's lectures were extremely uninformative and he often goes off on tangents that have nothing to do with the course material. His homework assignments are confusing, and he grades them very harshly. All that I learned in this class was from the online course, MyEducator. Not a good teacher.
Okay, if you need to take this class, don't fret. It's not that hard to get an A in the class as long as you are on his good side and do your homework. He does go off on a lot of tangents about life though. Not my favorite teacher or person in general but its not the end of the world if you need to take him. Tough grader though - do what he says.
DO NOT take Michael Joy. He is an incredibly tough grader and takes away a large amount of points for the smallest things. He barely explains the material and then expects us to do it perfectly on our homework. He is very confusing and just overall not a great teacher in this subject.
Joy docent explain things well. His class is useless. He gives pop quizzes. The online myeducator program is the only teacher you will need and even though the class is 2 credits it should be 4 because of the amount of homework and exams you have. Joy grades hard. He cares and is good with office hours but is very picky and tough.
This class is mandatory and important, too bad you have to take it with him! I feel lost most of the time and that's because he does not teach content, the online textbook does. The homework is long and hard, good luck.
Joy is a nice guy, the course is very hard though. Make sure you have people in the class that can help you because some of the assignments were so confusing and hard. Give yourself plenty of time to take the homework assignments. I also landed a summer internship because of the content I learned from this class!
The class is really easy as long as you look at MyEducator for a little. Coming to class is basically pointless (but attendance is mandatory) because it's just repeating what MyEducator says. You could probably do this entire course in like a month on your own. To be honest, it was a waste of time, I wouldn't have taken it if I didn't need to.
Contradictory to what many say about Prof. Joy, he is the absolute best Business computing teacher at this school. Take his class, go to class (every day) and listen and follow along with his lectures. He designs the class that if you listen you will never have homework to do outside of class and it's an easy pass. I would easily take this again.
Is Joy the best professor? No. Is his class unbelievably important? YES. You need to know how to do what he teaches, so go to the class and understand the concepts. Class is mandatory anyways but still.
The teacher goes off on 20 minute rants about random things in society instead of teaching the class about Excel. Then, he will briefly teach the lesson and not go into better detail. The homework's are much more complicated than what he bothers to teach. The tests are in class, extremely long, and beyond complicated.
Gives timed exams when no other assignments are timed.
This class and professor are pretty rough. Joy wants to be nice but is hard succeeding at this. He can come across very condescending during class and when you go ask for help during office hours. The homework takes hours to complete and is way more difficult than what he lectures about in class. End of year project is hard hope for a good group
The exams were impossible. He gives lots of assignments and they are so hard! He spends way too much time talking about his life and not teaching and we always ran out of time before he could even finish the lesson. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS, he'll give you an extension on whatever you came in for and he'll tell you directly how to do the assignment!
Bad communicator and doesn't explain concepts well. He goes at his own speed and gives assignments that go along with what we did in class, but it's not helpful because what he does in class does not make sense. Office hours are a waste of time too because he can't answer a question in a straight forward manner. He made me cry and Im not even soft.
Horrible professor. The myeducator assignments are usually simple but he gives extra assignments that seem impossible to get all the points on. His tests are ridiculous. He had to completely delete one because everyone did so bad in my class, but the next test was just as hard. Do not take him.
Probably one of the most frustrating classes I have ever taken. He usually wastes the first 20 min of class then jumps into the material over halfway through. All of the online assignments (MyEducator) aren't too difficult, you just have to read the material. His tests are impossible and grading is all over the place. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
He literally farted in my face. also his grading is ridiculous and the tests are impossible. Avoid at all costs.
