The tests are hard, but the quizzes are easy. Its a tough class no matter who is teaching it. Dont take it freshman year like I did, bad idea. Hes fairly good at explaining the subject matter and hes availlable for extra help, but the class is a lot of work.
Joyce is definitely a good teacher for a class like Calc III. Lectures are easily understood, and tests could have been much more difficult.
Hes pretty good. Lectures are organized, and tests are not too bad and there is a heavy curve. i don't think its too hard of a class, but some people have trouble, thats probably why there is such a heavy curve
He's one of the nicest teachers i've met and he's not a bad teacher, but his tests are pretty hard. they are so much harder than the quizzes and homework problems that you get. But he's always available for help and he strongly encourages it.
THIS GUY'S THE NICEST GUY I'VE EVER MET, HE'S SO SMART AND KNOWS HIS STUFF AND IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE FOR HELP. I WANT TO TAKE HIM TO THE HORNETS GAME.
super boring lectures but doesn't take attendance. The tests are hard but theres a curve and he genuinely wants to help if you come to him. calc is probably difficult no matter what teacher you have, this class was pretty decent.
Prof Joyce is a great teacher! His lectures are very clear, and we go over problems with a TA once a week.
Great teaching!!! This guy is nice!!
Really great guy. Teaches extremely effectively. tests are not as hard as people say they are. almost the exact same as the homework problems. I highly recommend him.
Professor Joyce is awesome. Especially for Calc I, he goes above and beyond what is necessary to ensure students understand the material. Tests are challenging, but certainly not impossible. He is absolutely brilliant; I just wish he was teaching Calc II next semester! TAKE HIS CLASS.
BEST MATH PROFESSOR EVER!! It is not that he is easy, he is just a good teacher. Explains everything clearly. Best Math professor in world. I love him. OMG I LOVE HIM!
Super nice guy, class isn't hard if you take notes. I really recommend him, he's very fair and wants his students to succeed.
This course was great because of the amazing ability that Professor Michael Joyce has in teaching calculus in a way that is clear, thorough, and logical. He explains math so easily that it becomes like music to my ears. Professor Michael Joyce actually explains why an equation or a derivative is the way it is. Take him if you want to KNOW math.
Dr. Joyce is the nicest man ever. He is down to earth and extremely smart. He knows what he's teaching and wants everyone to succeed. I wish he taught Calc 2 and beyond. I would take him over and over again if I could. Take him cause he's just that good!!!!
Professor Joyce is a fantastic instructor. He is clear, informative, patient, and brilliant in his field. While some theorums, formulas, etc. are intuitive to him, he's always willing to help struggling students. I never took calculus in high school, but I breezed through the course, all thanks to him. I'm taking Calc II because of Joyce. TAKE HIM!
He is so great and makes sure everyone understands it before he moves on. he is the BEST calculus teacher i have ever had. a genius but also knows how to explain it to people who have no clue how to do calc (like me). he is awesome!
Super nice guy. He is extremely helpful and he knows most of his students are there to fulfill the requirement. This can actually be a bad thing if you understand a concept because he will harp on it continuously until EVERYONE gets it. Tests are not bad. Final is doable, but you have to study. Talk to him if you ever need help! He cares about you!
Excellent professor. Very knowledgeable regarding calculus and loves teaching. Read the book before class, go to class, take good notes, spread your homework out during the week, go to office hours, and study hard and you will learn calculus very well.
Best Professor ever!!!! Always there to help, and super helpful in explaining things
Dr. Joyce is super kind and helpful. He really seems to care and goes over plenty of examples in class. He's completely willing to answer any and all questions, both in class and in office hours.
Tulane's math department is lacking, but Joyce makes up for it. Consolidated is NOT an easy class by any means but Joyce truly wants you to learn and do well. You just have to put in a ton of effort in on your end as well. Super nice guy and is a MUST TAKE if you want a solid math professor. Do the homework and go to class and you should be okay.
He's a great Professor, and a very kind guy. Will help you learn and loves to teach. Take him if you have the chance. He is excellent and taught me to love math.
Great prof if you pay attention! Definitely go to him for office hours if you need help because he's great at answering questions! The material is tough, but if you do your homework, pay attention in class, and ask questions, you should be okay! He also curves a little bit at the end if he sees that you're putting in the effort
Literal angel sent from heaven to save me. Most kindhearted caring math teacher i have ever had in my entire life. Made so much extra time to work with me and tutor me through the whole semester. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Gave me so much help on homework and he just understood all my struggles and gently helped me not to freak out. Best man in the world.
I took AP Calculus in high school, so this class was very easy for me. Michael Joyce is always willing to re-explain concepts. He is very patient with all of his students, and always advertises his office hours in case someone needs extra help. He uses a lot of example problems to clarify concepts. There are occasional times he takes attendance.
The BEST option for MATH1210! His lectures are straightforward and logical and his tests are very fair. He let me argue back points on a test. MATH1210 is tough, but he is the best thing about the Tulane math department. I'd never taken calc and did well. Lots of homework (but it's all helpful) and occasional attendance. Highly recommend him!
One of the better math professors of the department. Explains things clearly, but any student who hasn't taken calculus before will struggle keeping up (take long calc). I liked that homework problems were online (helps you through them and tells you how you did). The tests are tough. Especially the department wide final.
This man is an incredible professor. He makes something as complicated as calculus easy to understand. I would take his class again in a heartbeat! He always spends time clarifying topics if a student is confused. Overall, a great instructor and person!
this man is god. best math teacher in the department. incredibly nice, awkward in an endearing way, very understanding and always makes time for every single student. he's very fair in making his tests however, some might run into trouble with the departmentwide tests. god's gift to tulane's math dept.
Joyce is such a helpful man. He gives 2-3 webassign homeworks a week along with a weekly written homework which requires a ton of work. The written hw is much harder than any of the tests and the root of much of my stress. Still, I highly suggest him as a math teacher. He goes out of his way to help his students and its a great teacher as well
He is the best math teacher at Tulane and probably the best math teacher I have ever taken. He does a really good job explaining the concepts, so even though there are departamental exams, you are prepared for them. Calc isn't easy, but if you work hard you can get an A. He is also willing to meet with students outside of office hours to help.
Love this guy! sometimes fails in his explanations of calc ideas, but for the most part... does a good job of making calculus pretty simple. only one hw assignment each week that takes maybe an hour or two. Come to class, take notes, do hw, get help if you don't understand, and this class shouldn't be too hard. Joyce is very nice & cares. take him!
Classes aren't mandatory, except for the recitation class with the weekly quiz. Joyce is supposed to be the best calculus professor, but I didn't think he was great. He is very nice and willing to answer questions but can explain concepts in a confusing way. There are daily homework assignments in the online textbook but I don't find them helpful.
He's great. Definitely the best option for calculus. He cares so much that you learn the material. Tests are curved and pretty fair. He does push you to think on tests and apply previous concepts from the semester, but he's fair and tests what is taught. One weekly written homework assignment, 2 tests, and a final. Take him.
Took MATH 1150 with him. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you show up and take good notes they will be very useful. He tests fairly and with a curve, but definitely do the textbook practice problems before the tests, as the tests definitely challenge you to remember the material taught. I definitely recommend taking him.
Having previous experience in calculus, I thought this class would be a breeze... Boy, was I wrong! Dr. Joyce, though, is a great teacher! He assigns weekly homework that is surprisingly time consuming, which make you learn the material, but is graded very strictly, so missing work will hurt you. 2 tests, 1 final, weekly homework assignments.
Joyce will forever be the best option for Calculus, the man is simply brilliant. He changed his course design, though. Homework is due online every Monday and Thursday, which is manageable. Your grade is made up of your homework average, 2 midterms, and your final, but he prepares you well and is always willing to help outside of class!
Joyce is the best. He is clear and doesn't have an accent. His penmanship is also really clear, he's good at answering questions in class and he's always available during office hours or if you make an appointment with him. you don't have to go to class but what he teaches gives you the steps on how to do the hw. tests are a little harder than hw
Joyce is by far the best math teacher at Tulane. He is so clear when he teaches and he is incredibly patient. Your grade is based off of your homework (due every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday online) and 4 tests. His tests are not too difficult and he gives them on the Monday and Friday of that week so that you can choose from your better score.
the WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. told me to drop his class when i wasnt doing well. wasnt understanding to anything at all and was not overly willing to go over exams. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. huge regret and he will add sooooo much more stress to your life.
This class was my worse nightmare and I did terribly. However Professor Joyce was the best math Professor I have had. He was available anytime and would work with you as much as you asked. He really cares about his students and helping them pass the class. Yeah the subject matter is insanely hard but he does all he can to help as long as you ask.
Great professor! Joyce is very approachable, and his lectures are always clear and understandable. I had never taken calculus before and ended up with an A-. Curve at the end helps, but be prepared for a lot of homework and studying.
Joyce is the best calc professor at Tulane. Very smart, kind, and incredibly helpful during office hours. A little awkward but in a wholesome way. If you complete and understand the homework, attend office hours and recitation, you will do well. Would definitely take him again.
Calculus and concepts like these are so very hard for me to grasp but Joyce made it doable! I struggled so much first semester of Calculus and I wish he had been my teacher then. He makes learning Calculus fun and engaging and I'm not going to, but sometimes I think about being a math major. You still have to work very hard. Definitely take him!!
took his Long Calculus I class - go to class, pay attention to his lectures, and do the webassign homework, and youll be fine. additional SI sessions are also helpful
WebAssign 3 times a week (about 2 hours of work each). Talks with a lisp so sometimes hard to understand, though is super caring and wants you to succeed. 2 midterms (for both you have 2 tries, Monday/Friday, take the score of the higher one). 4 dropped hw grades. Final (35% of grade so study!!) Answers emails/webassign messages fast.
I liked Michael Joyce for Long Calc 1. He explained things at a slow and steady pace and always made sure students could ask questions at any point during the class. His "2 day midterms" are SIGNIFICANTLY easier on the Monday than the Friday, so make sure you study for the first one. If you have even a bit of common math knowledge, you'll pass.
Joyce is as sweet and helpful as a professor teaching Long Calc can be. He explains concepts pretty well, and posts notes online. Ultimately, though, it's easier to just learn the material through the homework. Study for the tests and go to SI sessions, because they will sneak up on you. Reminds you of your dad that doesn't get Facebook.
I took AP Calc in high school and barely got an A in this class which is long calculus. The midterms are easy but the final was impossible. He doesn't teach in class so be ready to teach yourself everything. If I had not previously taken calculus I would not have received an A. If you work hard and quickly you can do homework in class.
Only professor worth taking for calculus at Tulane (trust me, I took the class a couple of times all with different professors). I'm terrible at math but he really cared and helped me succeed in his class; I wouldn't have graduated without his help! He truly wants all of his students to succeed.
Easy and caring teacher. By far the best math professor at Tulane. Super accessible outside of class and always answers questions in class. Wish I could take him for every math class.
So laid back and chill. He really wants all of his students to excel in his class. Everyday, he takes 5 minutes to talk about studying habits, motivation tips and how to become a better learner. Long calculus isn't easy, theres no way around it but he made it so much more bearable. Help us by letting us take tests 2x and using the better score.
I cannot stress enough how nice Dr. Joyce is. He is like the dad we all wanted that grills outside in New Balance tennis shoes and an old navy shirt while saying "Hey sport!"
Best math teacher at Tulane. He explains the concepts so well and really wants you to do great. He is always available to help you and encourages SI sessions if you're struggling. For both midterms you have two exams and he takes the highest of the 2. Worth taking long calc with him if it's been a while since you had math.
The goat. Really easy class, does participation on a phone app so you don't have to show up. Of all the lecture halls at Tulane I found his lectures to be the easiest to understand. Lets you take midterms twice to raise your grade. Take this class.
He is the man. You are crazy not to take him.
Only math professor worth taking at Tulane - literally impossible to not do well, fantastic teacher
Prof Joyce's lectures were very clear and easy to understand. I didn't take calculus in high school and I did really well in this class. Basically, it is clear and easy in class, pretty confusing on the homework (lots of it), and then clear and easy on the tests. Tulane is really lacking in math profs, so if you want a good one, take this class!
Professor Joyce is one of the best math professors at Tulane! Hes so caring and kind. Make sure to ask him questions in office hours if lectures or homework are confusing. Get to take each test twice and get the higher of the two grades. Homework gets harder as class goes on, but three lowest are dropped.
I didnt fully appreciate how good of a professor Joyce is until after I finished his class and went on to take 1160 with a terrible professor. Michael does a great job at explaining intro level calculus content, and spent the first half of 1150 reviewing algebra and trig concepts to make sure everyone the strong foundation necessary to succeed.
Joyce is a great math professor. He explains concepts really clearly and does great notes and examples on the whiteboard for all of class. Homework can be difficult but there are TA help sessions and office hours if you need help.
joyce is an actual angel. the best Calc I prof you will find. the lecture is pretty big (like 70-80 students) and half the people in there dont even have him as a professor, they just show up because their professor sucks. he really cares about his students getting good grades and his lectures/notes are thorough. just show up to the recitations
Took him for calculus after withdrawing from another professor's calculus class with a C-. Was easily able to get an A.
I have had Michael Joyce for the past 3 semesters (took Long Calc 1 twice because I didn't put the effort in the first time and got a D), and I love him. I'm going to be sad when I don't have him next semester for stats. He made math easy for me (even though calculus is hard!) and if you don't understand, he goes out of his way to make sure you do.
Taking Michael Joyce is like watching a Khan Academy video live. He is very helpful and caring, and is a good teacher. He writes all the Calculus I tests here at Tulane, so his lectures are actually good preparation for the exams. Nightly TA help sessions are very useful, but the exams are ridiculously difficult.
Dr. Joyce is the best!! He cares so much about his students and really makes an effort to get to know his students, even in such a large class. I went to office hours a lot and he knew my name by the second time I went. He is undoubtedly the best Calc professor offered for Calc 1210. He explains topics very well - definitely worth going to lecture!
Prof. Joyce cares a lot about his students, and dissects the different sections of topics very clearly. Though, it's still extremely difficult to score high on tests. I put it countless hours of studying and ended up with a b-. 2 exams, quizzes weekly, hw three times per week and a tough final! Be prepared to work if you didnt take calc in snr yr.
Love Dr. Joyce! He is one of my favorite professors at Tulane. His tests are very fair and similar to in-class examples. I highly recommend taking calculus with him if you get a chance.
Professor Joyce is a gem! He made a difficult class with heavy concepts doable and interesting. Highly suggest taking this class or any class with this professor.
Joyce is easily one of the best math professors at Tulane, even for higher level classes like Linear Algebra. His lectures are clear and relevant while his homework assignments and tests are straight forward and fair. As long as you show up and do the work you can succeed in his class.
The best option for calc/long calc for sure. He makes calc not that difficult even though it is always a rough class. Goes slow and is super easy to follow along with.
Big lecture class. One of the only if not the only MATH1210 teachers that post the notes and video lectures Attendance is not required but to do well you must go at the pace of the class. Homework almost every other day is annoying but nothing too difficult. Quizzes are tough and graded by TA. Probably best option for this class.
I found this class relatively easy since I took calc in HS. He's one of the best math teachers I've had teaching wise, and although I never went the SIs seemed really helpful! The exams are open note, but definitely make sure you still study. He was really nice when I emailed him so thats a plus!
Professor Joyce was an amazing professor and wanted everyone to succeed. During his lectures, he is very clear to understand and talks at a relatively slow pace. Overall great teacher and at the end of the semester you get to drop some of your lowest grades.
Professor Joyce is definitely the best option. As someone who struggles with math, the class was hard but not graded solely on tests, and he allows you to drop some assignments. His lectures were pretty interesting, and he is accessible through email. There is a lot of homework and the quizzes are difficult, but that's universal for calc 1
Not a good teacher and an even worse grader
Love Joyce. Definitely the best option for calc 1. The tests and homework are the same for all professors but his lectures are much easier to understand and he is so sweet.
Very nice teacher, responds to emails, pretty organized. Doesn't teach the right material in class and then expects us to know how to the the homework. Overall good choice and very helpful but not the best teacher.
He is your best option for sure and is a lovely person. Calc sucks here and he is the best of the worst- the curriculum is trash and he does his best! I sound harsh but it really isn't him but the class isn't great/its difficult ESPECIALLY if you haven't taken calc before (I havent). Lots of hw and quizzes but that softens the exam grades
Get Prof. Joyce at all cost if taking math. He is an amazing lecturer for math and puts concepts in terms students understands. Also creates environment that allows students not be scared to ask questions. I hated math before, but Joyce made me enjoy it again.
My only regret is that I didn't get him for MATH-1210 so I took him for MATH-1150 instead. Almost every other professor in Tulane's math department is a let down in comparison to Dr. Joyce. Great man. His classes usually get filled up quick during registration periods, so be sure to act fast to get a chance to experience a genuinely good professor!
Joyce is fantastic. His lectures are solid and explain the material well, sessions with him in office hours are genuinely helpful since he will work one-on-one with you to help you understand, and he's all around a nice dude. The only issue with him is that he does not write the tests. From this, tests can really sink your grade and he can't help.
The curriculum for calc is awful, but Professor Joyce definitely tries his best, and he's incredibly nice and accessible outside of class. He also drops lowest grades in most grading categories. What's taught in class usually isn't helpful on the homework, but tests are really similar to the practice tests he gives. You don't need the textbook.
To be honest, Prof Joyce is the best youre gonna get for Tulane math, esp Calc. Hes very nice and knows what hes talking about. Hes willing to answer literally any questions and always offers office hours. He was super nice and chill.
professor joyce is by far the best professor in the math department. the curriculum is horrible but he genuinely tries his best to make it as enjoyable as possible. if you ever have questions or need help he is super easy to reach, definitely would recommend for any math classes!
I took Real II. Dr. Joyce is the greatest professor that I have had the pleasure of taking at Tulane University. I CANNOT recommend him enough. He is always ready to answer homework questions, always available over email, and extremely nice and understanding in office hours. Seriously cannot recommend any course taught by Dr. Joyce enough.
I took Dr. Joyce for "long Calc" and he's the best math teacher I've ever had. He's able to explain things multiple ways if you don't get a concept and his in class notes were well organized, color coded and very helpful with studying. He gave practice tests that were similar to his actual tests and HW and other small assignments are a grade boosts
THIS IS FOR MATH 3050. The material for MATH 3050 is pretty challenging and requires a lot of outside work and practice. Because the material is hard, the majority of the class is prof. Joyce writing on the board. Attending was definitely beneficial for me because prof Joyce explained things better than the book.
Dr. Joyce is really the best option for calculus 1! His lectures are clear and easy to understand, and he posts notes and zoom recordings online in case you need to review or miss class. The classes and homework, as well as supplemental study materials, do a good job preparing you for the exams and he really makes calc manageable!
Calc 1 is hard but Joyce is a great professor. He records all the lectures and posts them to canvas the same day. One time the lecture didn't record but he went back and refilmed it that night. You can tell that he cares about his students and I really appreciate that. He's great!!
Lots of homework and "midterms". Professor Joyce is strict on missing exams due to illnesses such as mono and won't excuse them. The same thing applies to missed recitations and homework assignments. Attendance is not mandatory but recitations essentially are. The problems in lectures are also significantly easier than what are on exams.
I can't lie, I didn't go to a single class, but Joyce is chill and a good teacher and makes himself available after class if you need him. Best calc teacher probably.
MATH 3050: Professor Joyce clearly doesn't just love math itself, but the challenge of teaching it. You can tell he's put a lot of thought into the best way of explaining a difficult new concept. I have never met a professor more eager to help me out (even with stuff he's not responsible for, like advising my course selections for next semester).
Professor Joyce is the best choice for math at Tulane, and I stand by that. Although the class is super hard, Professor Joyce tries his best to make it better and more understandable... for the most part. Calc is hard to begin with so I cant fully blame my professor for my grade.
Professor Joyce is the best Professor for Math 1210 (Calc 1). His lectures make everything so clear and simple. He is available outside of class if needed and he just enjoys teaching Math. The class is pretty hard but he is definitely the one who teaches it the best.
Calc 1 is a really tough class if you didn't take Calc in high school, but Joyce makes it as easy as possible. He explains things well, posts his lectures and notes on Canvas etc. Really cares about his students and math in general. Great guy, but tough department and class. I recommend office hours and tutoring if you didn't take in high school.
Joyce is one of the few good math professors at Tulane. He records every lecture & attendance is not mandatory, and he is accessible in office hours. He is very kind and explains things well to prepare you for exams, which is crucial because the calc department does not round or curve. The exams are difficult but Joyce's lectures will prep you well
Joyce is by far the best choice for calc! The course itself is very hard, but he made the class more manageable. He posts all the lectures online as videos, so you can watch them if you miss a class.
TAKE HIM!!!! He is the best. I had NEVER had contact with calc before his lectures and I got an A. Math itself is not easy, but he makes it manageable. Even if you don't get his class, attend his lectures.
So here's the thing, in my experience, MATH 1210 is an EXTREMELY tough class, even though I had exposure to Calc in high school. However, considering the other professors, Joyce is your BEST BET if you have to take this class. Joyce's lectures are very organized and logical and even if you don't get him as a professor, WTACH his lectures online.
Calc 1 is a terrible class, but Joyce does an amazing job teaching it. Don't bother going to class if it's early, you can just watch the lectures since he records and posts all of them.
I took Professor Joyce 3 years ago and I wanted to restate that he is by far one of the best STEM teacher I've taken at Tulane. I see him at the tutoring center constantly teaching his students outside of class if they need help. One of those few professors who loves his job and deeply cares about what he's doing.
Best math professor at Tulane
Dr. Joyce was an amazing Calc I professor. He is the literal light of the awful math department here at Tulane. He is super helpful in office hours and will always help out no matter what. Not only was he a professor to me, but he also made my first year experience all the more better, becoming a mentor for me. TAKE HIM EVEN IF HE'S AT 8 AM!!
Joyce is truly the best prof. for Calculus. Truly cares about his students, and clearly loves teaching. Calculus is a tough subject but he does great at explaining it. Tests can be hard, but if you study well and you know the material, you'll do well. Would take him again 100%!
Decent enough math teacher but sure can get caught on a lot of side tangents of proofs that are not necessary to the class.
He is the actual goat when it comes to calc. The absolute best teacher who you will actually learn from. I went to every class and just paid attention and got an A+ on all exams. Pay attention and you will do well. He is passionate and will take time to explain something in further detail. He also does zoom lectures if you can't make it to class.
can't stress how awful everything about this class was for the whole semester. The recitation was so disorganized and the teacher didn't know what he was doing either
Joyce is the best calc teacher no doubt. His lectures are helpful although he sometime doesn't have time to cover all the material which makes the webassigns difficult. He provides a lot of resources to study and is very accessible outside the classroom. His tests are very fair and similar to what he teaches and his study guides.
I LOVE PROFESSOR JOYCE. he is the best math professor i've ever had. he honestly might be the best professor I've had. he's so accessible outside of class. if you need help, he's there. the class was not easy but definitely doable. take him take him take him
Professor Joyce is a gem. Three midterm tests and one final were relatively easy. Textbook is free online along with Webassign for homework assignments. He makes students comfortable to ask questions in class or during office hours. He is passionate about math and wants his students to be successful.
I have never understood math more than with Dr Joyce. His lectures just make sense, and with a hard class such as calculus, it made it so easy to not only get a good grade but actually understand what's going on in the class. He is structured and provides resources for students that need help. The online textbook is also a good resource.
Take him for calc if you can. He is the sweetest and wants all of his students to suceed. If you go to class, you will do well in his class. He is very accessible outside of class and if you are struggling, make sure to reach out. He is the best CALC professor in the department I swear and a genuinely good guy as well
TAKE PROFESSOR JOYCE FOR MATH. His class is lecture based and he posts them online in case you miss class. Homework consists of WebAssigns and Knowledge Checks both of which are very doable. He makes himself available outside of class and provides practice exams to help us suceed. He truly cares about his students and what he's teaching.
Best calc teacher you can have here. Extremely helpful and clearly loves to teach. It is a tough class but if you are willing to study you will be fine. Attendance isn't mandatory but try not to skip.
Professor is Joyce is AMAZING. Best math professor at Tulane. He really cares about all of his students, and his lectures make really hard material easier to understand. The class is graded based off exams, webassigns, and knowledge checks. You can do well as long as you stay on track, and his lectures are on Zoom too, so that helps if you can't go
I never once went to class and got an A on every test. The textbook is great and I was able to teach myself the material from it. Lectures are good but they are slow and I didn't feel like I was learning from them.
Professor Joyce is amazing!! He is accessible outside of class and is very caring for students. He dedicates class periods to review for exams and gives plenty of practice problems. He has made Math 1150 very enjoyable and I recommend taking him. He records all of the lectures and posts to Canvas if you are unable to make it to class.
Hands down best math professor at Tulane. Genuinely wants each of his students to succeed. So great at explaining and is available to students three days a week for two hours with office hours. He never missed a lecture and is the reason I understood calculus. If you can get him as a professor, just know you are in the best possible class.
Great professor! Very well organized and clear expectations of students. Attendance was not mandatory and there was an option of joining each class via Zoom. The course content was relatively basic especially if you have taken a pre-calc or calc course in the past. He does reviews before each exam which are really helpful. Learned a lot.
MATH 3050: Problem sets are difficult. Exams are much easier than problem sets. The class requires a lot of outside preparation.
Can not understand him during lectures. So confusing and goes too fast.
He's the only good prof for Math1210! He has the best lectures and attendance isn't mandatory. All lectures are also recorded and put on Canvas. You have homework after every lecture but it's not too bad. Tests are similar to the practice exams on canvas. If you study you'll do well I recommend!
He's truly passionate about his teaching. He is very reasonable and kind. He doesn't grade the tests but you can submit a regrade and he will look at that (if you think your exam was graded incorrectly). His practice exams are VERY similar to the real ones, so it isn't difficult to do well. Lectures aren't necessary, but I'd go if you can!
The best calc prof! I took calc in HS and struggled but Joyce made everything very clear and easy to follow. The homework is 3 times/wk and takes less than an hour. The exams are the same across all the calc teachers and are pretty easy. If all goes well with the final I'll end with an A (I only study night before and skipped a few classes).
I didn't even have him. I had Yang. But this guy's lectures saved my life. The only math professor who actually teaches and cares about his students. Definitely try to get into his class.
He's the BEST prof for calc 1. Pick him if you can.
Such an awesome professor. He is so sweet and cares about the way he teaches. I would any class with him again if I could.
Professor Joyce is an amazing math instructor. His lectures are clear and engaging, and he genuinely wants his students to succeed. I found Unstuck study and the free course textbook really helpful for studying and staying on track. Definitely take his class if you can!
only good calc 1 teacher so just dont show up to whoever you have and watch joyce on zoom
BEST CALC PROF AT TU. Even if you don't get into his class, watch his lectures on canvas. He makes everything really simple. This goes for any calc class but practice exams are the same type of problems of what's going to be on exam so they are by far the best way to study.
honestly the best math teacher ive ever had. such a genuinely nice guy who loves what hes doing. its really easy to keep your grade up if you flop on the exams because there are losts of homeworks to do. his grading is super clear which is nice. the exams are a lot like the homeworks so just study the hw and youll be good for the exams. i
Professor Joyce is the nicest guy and wants you to succeed in Calculus. He hosts review sessions on zoom during finals and puts videos of his lectures up so any student who doesn't have him can get the help they need (bc the rest of the department is bad.) He is one of the best math teachers i've had and if you can get a spot in his class, yay!!!
