two papers, two fairly easy tests and a lot of Karl Marx and Feminism
class was a daily discussion, a social hour for a grade. There were two research papers, but thats pretty standard for eng 112. I hate english but enjoyed coming to his class.
He is at his best when talking about communism (or more specifically, the evils of capitalism) And he's really nice and grades kindly.
I would recommend him b/c he's very interesting--but he's not clear on what he wants for your papers and YOU have to ask questions about the assigments. He also does not grade easy with papers which is tough considering he doesn't elaborate either! Word of advice: WATCH YOUR GRAMMER in your papers.
very vague in assignments and grading, but the material talked about in class was interesting. just keep on top of things and ask him about assignments.
Great teach, hates Duke(SO DO I) and comes 15mins lates to class the first wk of school. his grading style is not good. loves discussion expecially during the drug policy and Communist Manifesto. Big Carolina and greatfulldead fan.
this guy was the worst teacher i ever had,i did not get a paper back until the end of the semester, basically he sucks
I have taken more than one class of his just because he was teaching. He opens your mind to many new ideas. He makes you ? your morals and beliefs, which opened my mind to a whole new world. Take as many classes of his as possible GREAT TEACHER!
He was a great teacher! He talked about a lot of interesting topics that really makes you think! It made class go by really fast! I would recommend taking his class to anyone! Especially if your not sure about MLA formating and the communist manifesto!
Couldn't say I would ever want to take this class again. His tardiness and lack of class preparation makes it difficult to want to be there.
Very interesting guy. Big Dead Head. Whats not to like?
I loved the class!! He is very intellectual!! I recommend taking him if you like thinking outside of the box... it's fairly easy except for the homework assignments, keep in mind he is an English teacher ;-) but overall, one of the best classes I have ever taken!!
By far.. One of the best teachers Ive had at WakeTech. He's very smart- and definetly grabs your interest... Dont confuse his niceness as being a pushover- definetly not. I believe he gives conferences on the MLA- so- take advantage of the the writing center (it's like a gift that keeps on giving).. plus, he'll give you xtra credit for it as well.
Good job confident professional! He teaches with tact and diplomacy. Thought provoking questions based on well explained topics, practical examples, and discussions captured student interest and attention.Mike had a thorough background knowledge of each topic. "What do you think" summed up by his own personal point of view was a great challenge.
Awesome teacher, totally nuts! Fair on grading papers and testing. I was lucky enough to have him for ENG112 and a lit course. If you like philosophy, you'll love his classes.
Very good teacher. Helpful with papers. He is very, very smart. He has a thousands of ideas running in his head and they all make sense. You must have him at least once while at WTCC.
I am fortunate enough to have him as a brother-in-law and as a "how-to-succeed-in-college" guide. Very helpful, humble, brilliant, funny man. Yes, I can't walk in his house without being called Ophelia or some other Shakespearian character, but I know I'll be able to depend on him for help when my own professors are kicking my butt. I recommend him
He gives out some of the most interesting lectures. He will definetly grap your attention. His tests aren't very difficult as long as you do the reading, come to class, and make sure you don't have too many grammitical errors when writing an essay.
Engaging speaker,great professor!
He is different, he poses different scenerios to teach aurgument, philosophy and critical thinking. If you come to class for the reading the quizzes are on you get an easy A on them. He expects you to have the elements of aurgument in your papers and is a stickler for MLA. Make appointments with him in the writing lab, he will guide you.
Wonderful lectures, brilliant ideas & great conversations took place in this class. A+ teacher. Clear on expectations, fair grading, relaxed atmosphere and attitude. He is a brilliant thinker and sincere about his beliefs and what he teaches. He is able to have a class step back and examine why we think the way we do. Highly recommend!
Mr Joyner is by far the most inriguing and abstract teacher I've had when it comes to English. He is def. philosophical. 112 is a fairly easy class though and he is a good teacher. He always outlines key points and makes everything pretty easy. Always ask question in class, it can't be guarenteed that he will get back to you through email!
His lectures are so interesting! He's very brilliant. Knows how to make you think and create discussion. However, I found his grading IS HARD. He knows the whole MLA book by heart and can rip your poor essays apart. Put a LOT of time and effort into your papers & pay attention to detail. Great teacher but be willing to work.
Very, very interesting discussions. He is very clear on his opinions, but he can be completely nuts. Make sure you put a lot of research and your own original ideas into the research papers, and PROOF READ!!! Take it to the writing center (extra points). Easy class, but a hard grader when it comes to your final paper. Easy final, and midterm.
Mr Joyner is a cool guy. He gives extra time for papers (if you really need it) and gives easy quizzes throughout the semester to help your grade. He isn't out to fail you and his class is interesting as well. If youve had him before, you will hear the same exact stories again. He tends to be a little outrageous at times as well.
The quizzes he gives are easy, but what he wants in the papers is very unclear. Even if you go to the writing center, it seems impossible to make an A. He is very particular about what he wants. He doesn't answer emails and he missed half the semester due to family issues. Good luck if you take him because you will need it.
well lets just say he missed 3/4 of the time which some of you might think is a good thing but when you learn nothing your papers are nothing. grading policy is outrageous. you would think a guy gone all the time would cut you a break knowing he didnt teach you anything.do not take his class
do not take this professors class. wrote excellent papers and ended up with a C in the class. Probably one of the highest averages in the class. gone most of the semester. THERES YOUR SIGN
very smart never there. wrote well written papers and also managed a C. Please take a word of advice and omit this guy from your schedule!!!!!!!!
Mr.Joyner's Eng 112 class was great. The class discussions were fun and informative, and while he gave gidelines for papers you ulitmately got to pick your topic. I have never been a fan of Eng.classes, nor was i good at writing papers but i did well in his class! I would recommend him as a professor, and i will attend his Critical Thinking class!
I enjoyed Mr.Joyner's Eng.112 class. He got the class involved in discussions and likes for students to be objective and think out side the box. It was fun to hear the diffrent sides of subjects. I would recommend him to anyone! Juet remember to use the library resources and the ILC writing center. He's very intelligent and will answer questions!
Fascinating, witty, & highly intelligent. I always look forward to hearing his lectures. He's also very attractive. Recommended.
Fascinating, witty, & highly intelligent. I always look forward to his lectures. He's also quite attractive. Recommended.
The most insightful and thought-provoking teacher I have ever had. Very much enjoyed his class, that being said, I got a low B or mid-range C on every paper (while every other class I took this semester I recieved A's)... his grading is tough, got a C on the midterm, and nothing was marked wrong. Regardless, I would definetly take his class again~
Most disorganized professor I have ever had. If he did not show up late, he did not show up at all. He even admitted to sitting in his office rather than coming to class. Lectures made sense, but his directions were never clear for writing papers. No idea how he came up with his method of grading, but it was never logical. Biased, ridiculous.
All I have to say "avoid the teacher" he is not helpful at all, always late, or doesn't show up for some reason! very disorganized. You won't get to any of yours scores til the end of the course. His class aveg. is a "C."
This course of instruction was truly an eye opener. Mr.Joyner is very insightful and compassionate in his style of teaching, I highly recommend him to anyone enrolled in English 112.
Mr Joyner is the best professor that I have ever had. He is very knowledgeable of the material. And very easy to talk to.I enjoyed the class 100%.
I would never take his class again. He was constantly late and canceling classes, never gave back grades in a decent time, and was so unorganized he actually lost some of the work I did in his class. He seems to be a nice guy but this class was not for me.
The greatest tragedy possible is the waste of an able mind. In order to grow, a person's beliefs must be challenged. Mr. Joyner makes it his duty to do just this! Therefore, a person can walk away from his course with the immeasurable gift of new perspective and new possibilities. What more could you want from an educator? Highly recommended!
The most interesting, enjoyable, and thought provoking class that I've attended (engineering major). Mr. Joyner's students benefit from a true university level learning experience. Mr. Joyner teaches a thought process valuable in nearly every aspect of life (logical reasoning). Exceptional teacher/great class/stress-free/highly recommend.
Great teacher! Very helpful and keeps it interesting.
Good professor, very entertaining. Keeps you interested. Definitely cares about the subjects and encourages participation. Getting a good grade in his class isn't easy, however, because he considers a C a decent grade.
Prof. Joyner is an amazing teacher! He is witty, brilliant, and makes you ponder the greatest mysteries of life. What more could you ask for?For all of those who complain about his grading:if you turn in a well thought out paper w/proper citation and grammar, you will receive a good grade.Simple as that.He does not give "easy As" to the undeserving.
Professor Joyner was great. He has a wonderful perspective and I found his lectures to be outstanding. It was nice to have a Professor with such and interesting point of view. I would definitely take him again if I am able to. I would highly recommend him for any Lit course. Personally I had him for ENG262 and it was excellent.
Professor Joyner is raw and engaging without compromising his professionalism or the integrity of the lessons. He allowed for open discussion and promoted free thinking within the context of our coursework. I genuinely looked forward to attending his class, and I was inspired to bring my A-game evry class. I Highly recommend his course to all.
Mr. Joyner's Eng 112 was a very enjoyable experience. His lectures at first seemed irrelevant, however as the classes went on they blended together in such as way that really brought across the material. He encouraged original thought, to shun preconceived assumptions when forming a paper. He teaches students to be intellectuals, not dictionaries.
Professor Joyner's lectures were very intellectually stimulating and thought provoking. As a libertarian I had a personal disdain for all that was Karl Marx. After the course I still believe in free markets but I have a new appreciation for Marxist ideas. Great Course!
Professor Joyner is an excellent and thought provoking professor. As an Argumentative Writing and Critical Thinking class, much of the in class time is spent in debate and parsing the argumentative essays in the provided text. He was tough on grammatical citation issues, but I would love to take the class again, it was very interesting.
Took his class in Spring 2011... Still don't know final exam grade or final paper grade. Decent teacher, but is terrible at getting grades back.
my favorite english teacher by far. i agree with everything michael joyner says or does. He's opinionated but he's usually open minded, and even if you don't agree he's respectful. Not the best at giving papers back, but he's really laided back! take him if you like to argue all class.
I adored Prof. Joyner as a teacher!!! He is by far the best teacher I've had at Wake Tech!! I was completely uninterested in this class when I signed up for it but by the end I was looking forward to my nights in class! very laid back and easy going, he does take attendance everyday so be prepared to go to class! take him you won't be sorry!!
Great professor! I had a terrible experience when I took American literature. I used to say literature would be the only subject I would not major in(I hated it). Thanks to Joyner I enjoy the works and look forward to class. HE ALLOWS STUDENTS TO THINK. I do not know my grade yet. But I don't care because I learned a lot. Thank you professor Joyner
Mr.Joyner is a fair and understanding instructor. He is willing to work with you, as long as you put in the time and effort. When it comes to his grading policy, he rather see you produce a paper of quality and not a rushed job. He has also proven to be very knowledgeable. His classes are very entertaining and engaging.
Mr. Joyner is a wonderful teacher; everyone should take one of his classes!! He is very interesting and well informed in his subject. He inspires thoughtful discussion and grades papers more on overall content rather than docking points for every minor grammatical error. I never thought I would like British Lit as much as I do now.
I have learned so much from Mr. Joyner. At first I was afraid and my thoughts were in a box but after attending his class he has taught me how to open my mind and think outside of the box. I am able to look at life and situations differently. He has taught me how to think critically and it does not mean my thoughts are negative just open to new.
Had a lot of discussion in class which was interesting!
Mr. Joyner is an excellent teacher. He is brilliant and extremely helpful. He provides solid examples in class and truly makes the student think. I would highly recommend him to anyone. He is the best college English professor I've ever had. If you work hard and do exactly what he asks of you in his courses you will do great. Take my word for it.
Mr. Joyner is an OUTSTANDING teacher. He goes above and BEYOND for his students. He is always available to talk with students about their grades and gives super easy quizzes to help bring their grades up. He does not impose his views on you at all but he really makes you think CRITICALLY. He is the BEST teacher I've ever had!
Mr. Joyner is an excellent instructor who values the opinions of his students and always listens. The material can be daunting, but he uses personal experiences to make it easier. His grading is unique in that its based on content and he doesn't take off for every little mistake. He is someone I would want to sit with and chat over a beer!
Mr. Joyner is by far one of the best teachers I have had. He really makes you think outside of the box and incorporates topics in class that you normally would not think critically about. He helps you to have an open mind on many current issues and definitely helped me to form a stronger voice in defending my opinion.
Love this teacher. Best teacher I ever had before. English as always been my worst subject but with this teacher it clicks. He teaches really great and doesn't move on until his class knows everything. I would highly recommend you to take his class. He is very passionate about his job. Go Tar heels!!
Mr Joyner is a pretty cool teacher, very helpful, if you need anything or have any situation when you talk to him there is a solution to the problem in the student favor and the teacher as well if you do what you are supposed to, you should come out with an A if lower a B, i also liked the way he taught the class very open (not stuck in the book)
I was very pleased with the course materials and discussions. He came to class every day to inspire students to broaden their minds. He reminded me of a University professor in that you should read materials before you get to class and the class structures was open discussion on the material. I Highly recommend taking his course
Mr. Joyner is an excellent teacher and expressed a great understanding of the material as well as a way to capture the students attention while teaching the material. This was a 3 hour class and he definitely made it much more enjoyable then i ever thought a 3 hour class could be!!
English 112 is the BEST class I have taken at Wake Tech! Mr. Joyner is a awesome teacher who really knows his stuff!! As a result of me taking his class, I am much more confident that I will achieve my academic and career goals. Thanks Mr. Joyner for your time and commitment that encourages us to pay attention, study hard, and don't give up!!
This class turned out to be much more interesting than I had anticipated it being, and Mr. Joyner really engaged all of us. It was a 5-week summer session, so it was VERY fast paced and full of hardwork, but it was quite rewarding.
Not a boring english class! he made it so interesting, brought up good subject and it actually opened my eyes on things that i never thought of. I wish i took ENG 111, 112 with him. He is down to earth and straight forward. Not many teachers these days are as good as he is.
Mr. Joyner has very interesting lectures. He always had my attention in the class. Joyner is very intelligent and he is a passionate teacher. I would recommend this class to anyone
Awesome teacher! He's objective and plays devil's advocate in the debates ensuring that you learn to argue as effective as possible. He's patient and will help you to understand what he's saying and his assignments. And will help in anyway he can, even years later.
Great teacher. Very tough on MLA format even if it is perfect he will find a mistake. Very intelligent and knows his material. If you want to step your game up take this teacher if you want to be average go somewhere else.
Mr Joyner is such a great instructor. He is funny and nice, very intelligent, has intriguingly controversial opinions, responds VERY quickly through email, and gives you the grade you deserve. Plan to become acquainted with at least one person so you are able to get notes if you miss class. Final exam was a walk in the park. BUY THE BOOKS.
Teacher is fine but when it comes to grading. He is so unfair. It is easy to pass class but he gives almost every one in class C. If you want C then take him.
Interesting topics discussed, and I actually learned from the readings. Getting A's on the quizes is easy if you do the readings and pay attention in class. The essays are graded a little though but if you go to ILC and/or REAL center getting at least a B should not be a problem. Learn MLA format, because he is tough on that. ALl in all good class!
Mr. Joyner is passionate and opinionated. The first couple weeks are spent reviewing MLA format, on which Joyner is quite strict. After that class time is spent on discussion and debate. Quizzes are super easy if you do the reading. Papers are graded fairly, just make sure you understand what he wants and take them to the REAL center. Great Teacher
Mr. Joyner is passionate about what he teaches. He offers his own highly intellectual opinion during discussions. He promotes critical thinking. I suggest you take this course during a regular semester and not during the summer, especially if you work full time. All in all, this class is great, but Mr. Joyner makes this class enjoyable.
Mr. Joyner creates a classroom environment that invites participation. His lectures are very interesting. The essays are graded fairly, and you defiantly wont be left wondering why you received the grade you did.
Mr. Joyner is engaging, energetic, and a little eccentric...perfect! You're sure to be challenged by the topics discussed in this class, so bring your brain!! As an older student, I found Mr. Joyner's approach to be enjoyable and entertaining; lively discussion, holistic grading, and a great sense of humor!
He is a knowledgeable and outstanding professor who always willing to help students.
loved the class. He is very intellectual. I recommend taking him if you like thinking outside of the preconceived idea. He grades fairly, and you will get to know what mistakes you have done. one of the best classes I have ever taken!!
Mr. Joyner doesn't just talk about things because it's what he needs to do, he's truly passionate about what he does. Even though I know I won't get my A that I need to stay competitive for the nursing entrance, I've learned more in his class not making an A than I have in classes where I have. For that, I am very grateful. Thank You, Mr. Joyner!
Professor Joyner does not hand out A's. So stop right now if that is what you want. This is a class that required effort. With that being said, I feel like everyone should be required to take his class. What I ended up taking away is worth WAY more than any A. I thoroughly enjoyed his class.
Professor Joyner is unlike many other professors I have had. He wants the class to be involved and this is key to critical thinking. As I listen in class to other perspectives, I become conscious of how important it is to be open minded. Joyner has been phenomenal this semester. The topics he chose to discuss are thought provoking.
I really enjoyed Professor Joyner's class. I learned so much and the scenarios that were presented for discussion forced me to break away from traditional views. He blew me away with how knowledgeable he was on essentially anything/everything. He truly cares about making a difference in our lives, that is certain.
Professor Joyner is outstanding. He has extensive knowledge of literature and a good sense of humor too. He encourages you to think critically and class discussions are always thought provoking. I learned a lot from him. I took this class during the summer and I am sad that it ended so quickly. Highly recommend!
Took this Literature class in a 5 week summer session, and, I won't lie, it was a LOT of work! But Mr. Joyner made our class sessions funny and interesting, and the quizzes and tests weren't bad. Just go in expecting to read a lot and start on your essays early and you will be fine!
Thoroughly enjoyed his British Literature class. He makes the class discussions very thought provoking and relates the material to current issues. Most importantly, he teaches students to open their minds to the world around them and to think critically. I wish everyone could take this class! Lots of writing but it's to be expected of an ENG class.
Prof Joyner is great! I did not count on enjoying Brit Lit. But he is so passionate about the subject and I got hooked! I took the summer class but wish I had taken a full semester. Even though he has so much insight into the material, he encouraged us to find our own voice in the work and he learned from us! This is the mark of a great teacher.
Great mini-semester. Knew the material very well and kept to the syllabus admirably. Digressed several times into Marxism vs. Capitalism, but overall remained on topic.
Mr.Joyner was a excellent teacher, he helped me to think critically about things. We need more professors like him.
Overall, great teacher. Very helpful and expressed his points of view on the topics very clearly. He made sure we debated current issues in our world today. The teacher has a great sense of humor, and at the same time manages to get the point across.
Joyner is the best instructor at Wake Tech. You will have to work hard for your A if you are not naturally good at writing as each paper is a good chunk of your total grade. His lectures are engaging and he encourages the class to participate. I would definitely take him again.
This class was very philosophical, and insightful. And brings to light the creativity of underlying messages that authors secretly or often blatantly weave in to their words. Professor Joyner does an amazing job sharing the writings of wonderful authors of this era in British literature, P. Joyner is a must take teacher.
All around Quality teacher, cares about his students and passionate about his job. Deserves to be recognized for pushing students to think in new ways. Couldn't possibly ask for a better teacher for this class. I would go back and sit on in his class just to enjoy the quality discussions he lead in his classroom.
Mr. Joyner is a wonderful teacher! As long as you pay attention and interact in class you'll do great. There are two papers that you HAVE to prepare for, if you slack off on those you won't pass. Joyner's always available for help and is very enthusiastic, so make sure you interact in his class!!
I really enjoyed this class. I learned a lot out of the lectures we had. The Historical argument paper and the Policy argument papers really helped me to learn the process of research. Good topics were brought up by Michael Joyner. He really helped me to get ready for my next English class. If it was my choice I would take him again.
Mr. Joyner has an extensive knowledge of all the material he teaches in this course and puts in extra work on his own time to find support for his claims. It's hard to say whether he should be in a classroom or in the senate making changes for the nation. The first of my teachers to ever have an entire quarter dedicated to learning MLA, hes a must.
very tough grader.. if you don't like literature than don not take him.
I will remember this instructor for the rest of my life. Has a great sense of humor. Encourages you to think critically about some very sensitive issues, which has caused me to change my view on several things. i will definitely miss this class!
The papers were as hard as most papers are for most English classes, but they were the only assignments given that were really difficult. Quizzes were short and very easy. Lectures were very enlightening and were presented in a very sophisticated way. Very honest guy, very up-front about everything. Makes sure that everyone is prepared.
A great professor who has a lot to teach is students. Does his best to make sure his students succeed, inspires his students to think critically, and forces them to reevaluate their views on controversial issues. He is very understanding, but he is very specific about what he expects from his students and can be somewhat anal when grading.
Mr. Joyner's lectures are thought provoking and downright entertaining. He adds humor to discussions, which engages students making the content enjoyable. Above all, he truly cares about his students and is extremely understanding! If you talk to him, he'll work with you and do everything in his power to ensure your success! Phenomenal professor!
One of the best teachers I ever had. The lectures are interesting and fun. Lively discussions are always on the menu. I highly recommend him. Best English class I ever took!
Love him! This is an English class you won't regret taking!
As corny as it sounds this class changed my life. I would not be the same person without it. He will not only challenge your thinking but will help you find who you are and what you really believe. My critical thinking flourished and my argument formulation grew exponentially. He's not afraid to cover hot button issues. Best class I have ever taken
This is a professor you WANT TO TAKE. I am a senior at ASU writing about Mr. Joyner because to this day his class still inspires me. He was the first teacher to help me question my beliefs on many fronts; he taught me to be free thinking. He leads a college course the way it should be: designed to help you learn and discover. Thanks Mr. Joyner.
Mr. Joyner is an excellent English professor and truly an expert on all things MLA. He's always available by email for help and grades very fairly. His lectures make you think and he always turns lectures into great discussions. You will learn. If you are a good student and want an engagedhelpfulcool professor, look no further.
His class was AMAZING, today was my last day and I'm pretty sad it's over. By far the best English classteacher I've ever had. He made me think critically and I think I'll probably remember his class for the rest of my life. I'll take any class he teaches! But he's probably not the teacher to go to if you have a personal problem and need help.
Mr. Joyner has some really good lectures that he encourages participation in. They are involved but really make you think about how our society is as a whole. The papers aren't difficult, but be prepared to hit the writing centers for revisions. Mr. Joyner is open to discussion about in class topics, and really seems engaged in teaching new ideas.
Do not take a class with Professor Joyner if you just want an easy A. He makes you work for your grades. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about Literature. You will read a wide range of works and discuss philosophy at great lengths. A very interesting course that will teach you a lot. Do not take if you are not going to read.
It is not often, if ever, that I can say I actually enjoy a class but this would be one. The class discussions are interesting and class really flies by. This instructor is very knowledgeable. The literature choices are good and are still relevant in today's world. If you read the assignments, the quizzes and tests will be easy.
Mr. Joyner made ACA 122 relatively pain free. His interaction with us was always helpful, professional, and straight forward. Classes started and ended on time and we were treated as adults. He checks AND responds to emails frequently and in a timely manner. Grading and expectations were clear cut and discussed well in advance. Will take again.
Thoroughly enjoyed this class. I learned a lot about academic course planning and gained personal insight through the self-assessment part of the course-which was my favorite assignment. The lectures were informative and infused with personal life lessons and experiences, which I felt was a very effective style of teaching. Do the workget an A.
I really enjoyed his class. The two things I wanted him to change is the fact that he will not help you on your essays only the MLA part. Also, his readings that he makes us do in the middle and the end his lectures are somewhat interesting, but be prepared to ask questions because he wants the classes to be more into the lectures.
He's an awesome person, I took so much from this class. I opened my mind to new things and I gained a lot of knowledge. The only thing is that the 2 papers are worth 70 percent of your grade. And he expects you to take the papers to the ILC or the REAL center before you turn it in or you get a really bad grade. Some people just don't have the time.
This professor really encourages you to think outside the box and invites you to question your foundational beliefs.
Mr. Joyner is a Excellent Teacher and wants you to succeed! He's very respected by others. He made me change my views on some subjects but most of all made me think in a different approach. I appreciate his way of teaching and hope others develop themselves the way I did.
Mr. Joyner is a professor that I will actually remember! He encourages you to think critically about issues happening in the world around us. His lectures are fun and interesting and are more of a class discussion rather than a lecture. He is also very clear about the work that needs to be done and is there to answer any questions.
Mr. Joyner is a phenomenal teacher. I recommend taking him his lectures are eye opening.
Michael Joyner is a great professor. I enjoyed his class. All of his lectures are backed up with great examples. I thought that the class would be a bit more difficult but it was not. Mr. Joyner is always convincing us to think more often.
Many of the papers are argumentative; you are allowed to discuss your views and opinions openly, he may disagree, but he will do so respectfully. Very tough grader, stickler for MLA format.
Mr. Joyner is an excellent teacher great class. Mr. Joyner had great topics to discuss an very informative professor. In addition assured that all the students were comfortable with the topics we discuss and excluded personal experiences. I really learnt alot from this class and urge students to take this course with him trust me it's well worth.
I recommend taking him and i will take him again. I loved this class; you know English classes are most of the time boring, but this one is not you will be having interesting discussion. M. Joyner encourages student to think critically not just think about things without having any reason why. just read the pages and you will have a A in quizzes
Mr. Joyner is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. He has very good ability to clarify the material. Great professor, great discussions, and great class. I really like English 112. I wish I had not taken this class in five weeks.
Eng 112 is all about argumentative writing and with Prof Joyner you will talk and write about all sorts of political and social issues. His views are pretty liberal, but regardless of what your politicalsocial views are, taking his class is a great way to broaden your perspective. Not an easy A but you will definitely learn something new.
One of the best instructors at Wake Tech. A thought provoking class. Expect to earn your grade. Your "A" will not not come easy, but you will leave this class feeling knowledgeable and inspired. Mr. Joyner will thoroughly discuss social and political topics and leave you with something to think about. I took this class over the summer.
He truly knows what he is talking about with each topic. He is extremely knowledgable and cares about what he teaches. His grading is a bit tough on papers but DO NOT be afraid to ask for help! He is such a caring professor and will do anything to help if you just ask!!!
Amazing teacher. He is clear on what he expects of each and every assignment. I noticed right away that he makes you think (with language). After every discussion he asks if there is any questions. I knew the first day that I would enjoy this class because of how comfortable he makes it for everyone. He wants you to participate in all conversations
Great instructor. Tough grader but with realistic standards and good feedback for papers. Read, pay attention to the lectures and give a good effort when writing your papers and you should come out fine. Helped me 2 years after I transferred when trying to get the class to count for Global Knowledge requirement at NCSU (he's a WTCC advisor also).
Mr. Joyner is a no-nonsense, straight to the point, thought-provoking and civil instructor. I feel like I am getting my money's worth when taking this class. This class will not be easy, as it should be! Whether I pass or fail, Mr. Joyner has performed his job to the maximum. Give the man a raise.
I am an international student from Luxembourg and I was a little worried when Mr. Joyner announced that ENG112 was a lot more demanding than ENG111. However, he made me discover a lot about my own critical thinking skills. Furthermore, he covers controversial and interesting topics that make for great class discussions. Great movie and music taste.
This course was quite in-depth as far as content goes. It was however a very serious class and quite useful for anyone who is taking their collegiate career seriously.
Mr. Joyner is one of the best teachers I've had at Wake Tech. I've taken both his English 112 and English 242 and had a great semester both times. If you're looking for a helpful professor that will make you a better writer look no further. He won't just hand you a good grade, you will have to earn it. You will need to read to participate in class.
His grading system was different than other teachers I have had (holistic grading). His grading is tough, but fair. His lectures are interesting; we as a class discuss important social issues. The lecture itself encourages class participation and I enjoyed hearing what everyone had to say.
Grades via Holistic Evaluation: grading an assignment as a whole. Focusing on what the paper conveys rather than the grammar used, he critiques without concern for points. This method helps me fathom the significance of the work. One quiz (5 match questions, title to passage, graded instantly) each topic is argued far in advance for preparation.
Most of the people in his class are just there because they have to take this class. He is a hard grader on his papers like he is the professor at some prestige university. Also, his midterm and final are ridiculous because you have to know stanzas from all the poems you read, which is a lot. Nice guy, but terrible class.
Great instructor! Extremely knowledgeable. Very straight forward about what he expects. Very well organized and keeps the class on track.
You will get out of this class what you put in to it. We spent the majority of our classes debating and did our work outside of class. You have to put time aside for this class and take your papers to the writing centers if you want to pass. Even though I didn't necessarily agree with a lot of his opinions, he was very interesting to listen to.
Being an international student I never thought I'd ever take a British Literature class, but Prof. Joyner's class was very interesting and it was fascinating to see how so many of the poem's topics are still, and maybe even more, important today. Prof. Joyner is always ready to explain something that is not clear and he takes the time it needs!
He's a good teacher, he really knows the material and definitely has his idea about what they are talking about. He will allow conversation and discussion and if you have an opinion about the works he lets you express it. All in all he's a great teacher but you better read the works and pay attention or the papers will hurt you.
Professor Joyner is a great guy. Highly recommend him for any english course you take. He is clear with his lectures, he gives quizzes but they are super easy if you do the readings he assigns. He is a really tough paper grader, the only way to get an A on his papers is to take it to ILC and READ centers, that is the only way. Great teacher, 10/10
Mr. Joyner is a great professor who uses a holistic style of grading. His style of teaching, the application of critical thinking, is exactly what college is all about. Lecture topics are very informative and fun. Essay's are argumentative, and topics are chosen by the individual. You will not find a better ENG professor than Joyner, hands down.
His class is refreshing compared to a lot of professors at Wake Tech. Even though I didn't receive an excellent grade in his class, I learned a lot. I will be taking his class for British literature. BEWARE, he is not the kind of professor that you can get away with doing your research and writing for your essay a week before it's due. DO THE WORK
M. Joyner is up at 8:00 a.m. He will keep you focused and participating. He knows the MLA 7 Handbook and he reading MLA 8 as we speak. He only grades bad if the paper is bad, he gives extra credit for going to the ILC or the Reel Center for help. If you're willing to do the work he will help you. He is a straight shooter when it comes to grades.
I'll start by saying I do not enjoy English but he made it doable. He is a great teacher and very fair. No surprises in this class. no pop quizzes!!
Mr. Joyner is far superior to any other wake tech teacher I've had. Most days we spend in deed discussion on a variety of topics. However, if you are strong in opinions based on politics and/or religion you may have a hard time stepping back from your opinion and looking at these matter critically. Overall this class gets a 10/10. Would take again.
Prof. Joyner is a good and fair instructor. He has good lectures and discussions. You will learn a lot from him in class. But when it comes to papers make sure you go to the ILC Writing center or REAL center before you turn it in. Just read your assigments and ask questions and you will be fine
I do really love the lie out of the class, and every little detail is set to success. Nothing to complain about in this class, is a wide open space of critical thinking! the best ever! If you want to succeed then you better do the work!
Mr. Joyner is a really good English professor. He grades the paper as a whole rather than taking off little points for mistakes. He is a fair grader and you will get the grade that you deserve. If you utilize the real Center, you should do fine in the course.
I really enjoyed my time with Mr. Joyner, he is a greater teacher and wonderful adviser. He has a tendency to lose track of time but every moment is hilarious, informative and insightful. #GoPanthers
An engaging presence in class, respected for his approach, knowledge, and temperment.
His class was extremely interesting and his discussions about important topics like the drug problem and feminism made the class thing outside the box. However when it comes to grading he is very tough. He expects ALOT out of the research papers and does not drop any grades. one quiz grade caused me to get a B in the class when i was 1 point from A
Mr. Joyner is a very interesting guy. The conversations in class are never boring, he always asks really good questions to make you think. He is very straight forward with what he expects from you and the entire class for the semester. He gives you all the keys you need to be successful in his class, you just need to apply yourself and do the work
He is well knowledgeable about the readings and will have open class discussions about the reading. On papers he lets you know where you went wrong on them and tells you weather or not it was a well organized paper or not.
He is a fair grader and will write references to the LB Brief and MLA Handbook next to mistakes you make in your writing and citations. The class discussions make you think. His goal is to make his students critical thinkers. He incorporates psychology into a lot of the discussions as well. It's a fun class!
Mr Joyner was a great professor, he is also a funny professor who is very understanding and will help you out as much as he can when you ask, lots of readings in his class with quizzes on them but they are short and clear. tough grader, you have to try really hard to get a good grade on the papers.
Very good professor and a good man. Has a good approach to the course and to life. I enjoyed every moment I shared with him in class though it was for a short period of time. But he is or if not the best in the game!
Joyner is an excellent professor, he keeps students engaged with his lectures. He cares for his students and only wishes them success.
Sadly he had to leave our class at the beginning of the semester but I really enjoyed the time we spent with him. Great challenger of ideas and reminder that the world has so many perspectives that need to be respected. I long the discussions we couldn't have.
