Lecture and readings are interesting.
Overall, a great prof! However, be prepared to take lot's of notes!
What's with the fake accent
Drop the fake accent
Ya whats with the accent - thinks students are dumb
What accent is that???
Definitely not the course material keeping the ladies interested in this class! Stop using long words to sound smart, its a turn off.
Accent has got to go..were raised in TO. Need to provide students with PowerPoint presentation instead of the LONG Notes, full paragrah FORMAT. Prof know the topic....class was pretty intresting, maybe adding more stories would be easier for students to relate to material.
Too many readings!!!Seems a bit insecure(why else would you use a fake accent & brag about your PHD @ 29?)Like he's trying too hard with the students. He does know his stuff though, and is very helpful...especially with the ladies!I think he thinks he's hot.Personally don't care for his chest hair.
He's a helpful teacher, but not during class time. Sometimes notes can be comfusing and it would be better if they were formatted differently. He doesn't talk about the readings much (or at all), which makes me wonder why I bother doing them cause they're pretty long. But he's overall a nice prof.
Speaks with this bizarre accent. The pretension level is high but he looks a bit like a very small Val Kilmer and talks like Derek Zoolander so maybe it's all good in the end.
Stop being so flirty us female students. ew.
Pretty dry class, only reason for attending was the Prof, He's extremly attractive, but has an issue with attempting to do Irish accents?!?!?!
Decent prof. He's a little too "friendly" with us ladies and could get him in trouble in the future!
I don't know what kind of English he speaks but I sure don't understand a word of it.

This prof is a good teacher but sometimes loses his students with some of the big useless words he uses. He is EXTREMELY attractive...always a plus...Pretty lenient on the marking..not too specific..sometimes it is good to be..
He's an alright prof. Just uses too many big words sometimes, but if you pay attention you can figure out what he's talking about. He has given some breaks in regards to the mid-term and final paper.
The language he is speaking mixed in with all the big words makes it difficult to understand a lot of the material.
Wow.....if only all profs were this good looking. It is actually hard to concentrate. He is very knowledgeble on the topic of policing and is very helpful with marking and paper info. I feel like I have learned a great deal from him...and not all of it has been in the classroom...
Great Prof. He's very intelligent always there to help students and VERY ATTRACTIVE!!!
Professor Kempa is an intelligent and forthright man. His knowledge of things odd is rather endearing. He reminds me of Val Kilmer a bit too much and I occasionally dream of him at night.
HOTTY!!!!! WOOHOO
No Comments
Well, he knows he is HOT and uses this. if you a girl you are in luck, he is tooo friendly wink wink. He is smart i can give him that, way to friendly and helpful for my liking though.. what about accent??? DROP IT TOO PRETENTIOUS
I have to admit he is pretty hot, he looks so much like Val Kilmer but a shorter version way shorter version. he has this annoying accent and use big words to make him look soo smart, DROP THE ACCENT its annoying.. He is way to friendly with the ladies if you know what I mean. EWW that chest hair, shave it
He is a very good prof. Although he uses big words, he is VERY HOTT!!! I mean like burn your mouth on peppers hott!I would love to run into him outside of class ;)
Come on people.. it's a South African accent, mixed with a little Irish. The places he said he did his grad work. I see all the girls have gone gagag for him.. big surprise. One of the best profs I've ever had, isn't super left-wing like most of the crim profs.
Best prof ever. Makes class so interesting, he's very funny
He likes to use a lot of big words to make himself sound smart. It makes him pretty hard to understand sometimes. He also makes these bizarre gestures to emphasize his points. It's hard to describe, you'll know what I mean when you see it. He's a pretty easy marker, though, and as long as you do the readings you'll do well.
Kempa, is a high spirited teacher some are frightened by this but he is very interested in what he teaches. However, he does use big words and when explaining stuff a lot of students find themselves lost. Also, if you have a written final by him - expect it to be tough for policing II.
Stop using big words you're really not impressing anyone and drop the fake accent you were born in toronto come on. Although the subject matter is sooo complicated and nothing i expected from a policing II class, he graded quite leaniently on the midtem and final so i guess if you make the effort to partially understating the material you'll be ok
worst teacher, avoid if possible. overcomplicates everything, uses large words to appear smarter when the lesson could be much more easily understood if he spoke in normal english - you have to do a lot of work to just understand his lectures
He is a good teacher but needs to stop using big words! he needs to be clear as well other then that he knows his stuff! and is very good at it, really funny as well. Definitely Recommended if you know English quiet well.
WOW, he's sexy! Like super hott!! Can't get better than that. Oh by the way to all the people who can't understand him, maybe you're not bright enough. Because he does use big words but they are often very clear. He's really smart and knows the stuff really well. I would recommend him and this course to everyone! He's a hunk!
Took quite a bit from this class. The material in the beginning of the term was overwhelming. Really thought it would be easier for a 1000 level course but by the second term, it got more interesting and after you get the hang of his lingo you'll do fine. Ended up acing the exam :) He's pretty charismatic.
wow best prof as of yet! can't even begin to describe how amazing his class was. it is confusing but i went to every office hours and it helped ALOT! definately take if you want to enjoy crim
Great Prof. Talks very fast so if he gives you permission I suggest recording his lectures. Pretty fair midterms and finals, and discusses in detail with you the answers to midterms afterwards. Very charismatic teacher and makes learning fun. Don't try Facebook in his class though 'cause he walks all over the giant auditoriums while lecturing.
Talks quickly and has a very concentrated train of thought that you really have to follow closely in order to understand everything he's saying. Record his lectures - doing that got me an A+ on the midterm. Definitely has a passion for crim that shows in his teaching.
Amazing! Love the lectures, he makes the course very interesting and fun. He is funny yet still gets through the course material at a good pace. I would definitely recommended him!
A funny prof who truly loves teacher. However, he often uses big words, which can confuse students!
Great prof, engaging and inspiring
Good prof. Pros: engaging, varied visual aids, fair exams. Cons: talks fast, uses big words, speaks only in run-on-sentences with many ideas. He extends deadlines for late assignments well past the end of the exam period, which can be a good thing, by probably bad because it teaches bad habits. Overall a great prof who cares about his class.
Very good guy, I can tell he's very into what he does. He likes to use extremely big words and tie them all together into one long sentence but apart from that he's a very good lecturer. Easy class too...he even posted the questions to the final exam so we can prepare before going to write it. Anyone taking Criminology, must take it with Kempa
Amazing teacher! Makes difficult topics interesting adding quirky stories into the mix to provide examples. Extremely engaging a difficult class to drift off in. Tests and assignments are fair and marked as such, does not use a text but instead uses articles which is great! One of the best profs at UO hands down!
Not a fan of the marking layout for the course, too many papers.
Honestly, he's arrogant and vain. However, he really knows his stuff. If you don't go to class, consider yourself lost in regards to the material. Shares a lot of personal stories..talks about his outfit choice almost every day. Still, he's kind of hot...and will be more than happy to help during his office hours. Overall, decent prof.
Even though he talks at super speed, and the amount of information on his slides is overwhelming, if you listen to him and follow his study guide, you will get a good mark. He made me laugh every class, and is a very animated speaker. Awesome prof.
Every1 needs to stop attacking him personally. Forget the accent and some1 else's inappropriate chest hair comment because the man truly knows what he is talking about! He is very helpful/interesting/FAIR. Don't use social networking sites in class he doesn't like it and u will get caught. Attend lectures and do the readings and you will succeed
He talks too fast and is over the top dramatic which is distracting. There are also way too many readings for this class, and the books are not cheap at all!
Satisfactory quality. Got a 70 percent on a paper that lacked commentary as to how that grade was achieved.
He knows what hes talkin about and has a lot of passion. Some of the students are crushin on this proff but he doesnt cross the line. Props to him. he knows his stuff. Good proff.
Such a fun class. This guy knows what he's talking about. You have to attend all the lectures and do all the readings to succeed (quite a bit of reading, but do it and you'll pass guaranteed) He managed to make us laugh every class and made the whole experience fun. Being cute doesn't hurt either :p Great prof, great class!
Went to every single class, once you see him you'll understand ;)
Exceptionally knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what he teaches. He manages to make rather bland topics interesting, and always makes the class laugh. Do the readings, and pay attention in class and you will succeed. It is because of Kempa's class in first year that I became a double major to include Crim :) THANKS KEMPA! YOU ROCK!
I thought he was really good. Yes he does use big words too..but overall hes great!
I took this class a while ago but he was a great prof. Everything he taught us I'm using now in crim theories classes and now it all makes sense. I'd take his class again.
He's a great teacher- smart, good vocabulary and funny. However, there is a lot of reading to keep up with and the midterms were very difficult. Puts all his PowerPoint on Blackboard, which is helpful.
good teacher, makes the class lath and makes dry boring topics interesting. way to many readings, and is a hard marker.
Great prof. He marks hard and expects a lot from you, but I feel that it's rewarding when you do well and understand the concepts. He is also VERY willing to help you and explain things over. Don't be afraid to ask questions during class, he never makes you feel like you've asked a 'silly question'.
Kempa definitely knows what he's talking about. He grades quite fairly and he expectations are crystal clear. Readings are on the extensive side, but contrary to what you may hear, by attending every lecture and reviewing as you would for any other class, getting an A is quite possible without the antagonizing readings. Overall, he's fantastic.
Amazing
Probably the best public lecturer I've ever had! Not the easiest class but he makes the class SUPER interesting! Attendance is mandatory if you really want to understand, I didn't do a single reading and did fine! Notes and study are key! He's always available outside of class for clarification.
AMAZING prof. So glad I had him first semester - definitely guaranteed my love for my crim major! Hope to take more classes with Kempa in the future; such a helpful engaging prof :) fave class.
Such a great professor! He really strengthened my love for criminology, not to mention that he's pretty hot which is merely a bonus. Such a funny prof too & makes classes so interesting. If you get the chance to have him I recommend it because the course load is fair, he's an easy marker who loves his students & he always answers questions clearly.
Pros: He's really funny, amazing prof, extremely interesting to listen to, very dedicated to his teaching and a very fair marker. Cons: Can be hard to follow at times. Totally recommend him!
He is an amazing prof. His class requires work, but if you do the work you will get the mark. For his exams make sure you STUDY. If you do not study, you will not do well. He gives a lot of hints in class so ATTEND and take GOOD NOTES! He knows so much about crim and he is really funny and cute. For his assignments, listen to his requirements!
Great professor he has really interesting lectures. Assigns a lot of reading for each class.
Does the weirdest things during his lectures like dance and change characters. He keeps things interesting but makes his lectures harder then they need to be. Make sure you listen carefully and take notes while you're at it. If you're in crim, switch to kempa! He actually knows what he's talking about and is available to help students if needed!
Such an amazing professor! Always enjoyed attending his classes! He is always willing to help you, and is very clear on what he wants! He knows you can do it so he makes you work for it! Amazing prof overall! Would definitely take his classes in the future!
Very cool guy, funny and nice. Lectures were so dry they became unbearable at one point. Lectures only contain general ideas, you have to do readings your own research to get the concepts. Mid terms and exams generally difficult.
Was unclear on what to do for the proposal, the midterm's multiple choice questions are hard and the exam is very long (essay-type answers). Still, very interesting class, and very funny prof. He explains in great length.
He is hilarious and uses real life experience and examples to explain course material, his lectures were really stimulating. He puts his powerpoint slides on blackboard and is really approachable if you need clarification or have questions, when people messed up their papers he even let them redo them. There's a lot of reading but his class is fun
He's an amazing teacher! Made introduction to crim very clear and interesting! He's very professional but also makes a lot of jokes and engaging the class and does a lot of weird movements which makes it so entertaining and interesting to watch! Clear marker. Tells you exactly what he expects there are no surprises. Do it and succeed. RECOMENDED!
Amazing teacher, but difficult readings. He really helps you understand exactly what hes looking for in essays so you don't get side-tracked by all the rest of the information given. Fair marker. Work hard and you'll get a good grade !
AMAZING PROF! I switched to his class and it was the best academic choice I've made! I look forward to his lectures, he makes every topic interesting! He definitely deepened my love for Criminology. If you don't have Kempa, TAKE HIS CLASS!
Awesome lecturer and very intelligent guy, but can be hard to follow. Has a very specific train of thought- you have to listen to every word he says to understand his point, and even if you do listen, you may not understand because of the advanced language he uses. Read slides before lectures to get a general idea before class. Overall good prof
I came to Ottawa very excited to have my major in criminology and from him being my prof, I've already changed my major. I really do not like him as a prof. He gets off topic very easily and talks way too fast to take any notes on what he is saying.
I loved this class! Kempa is hilarious and talks about personal things all the time. He loves what he's doing and because of that, sometimes the terms he uses to explain things are hard to understand and he talks extremely fast!!!
Kempa is a great guy, really funny but his lectures are boring. Sometimes during lectures he makes really weird gestures and rambles about his personal life which is annoying. He doesn't make his explanations clear AT ALL and the mid-term is hard, paper is hard, and final is hard too so basically it sucks.
Favourite proff! He's hilarious but he also clearly knows what he's talking about! I never needed it but I feel as though he is always glad to help students and is not intimidating
Kempa is a beauty. He can get off subject, but it's always related in a roundabout way. He's very clear about what he wants and is straightforward in his exams. He also actually cares about his students and will help you if you mess up/don't get it. His lectures were ones I didn't want to skip. If you can, GET HIM AS YOUR PROF.
His lectures are broken up so you do one topic/class, makes it easy to study. Lots of jokes/stories that keep the class interesting, but relate to the material. Recommend taking notes on a laptop because he is a fast talker, and gives you a lot more details than what are on the slides. Took as an elective, helps PSY1101 (similar theories/concepts).
He uses a lot of unnecessary big words, makes a lot of jokes repeatedly, and the lectures are hard to follow. There is a lot of reading, but he posts the slides, and wants his students to do well. If you read you will pass. The information is really interesting, but he isnt.
Super funny prof with really captivating lectures. His expectations for the 1 paper you write are super clear. He uses really big words though so beware you might have to google what they mean. 1 midterm with mc and an essay, really easy. Exam was the same but REALLY hard. Was my favourite class, just study a bit and you'll pass with at least a B-
Dr. Kempa is a hilarious teacher. Often uses examples to better explain tough concepts, but also often uses superior grammar that makes it harder to understand some concepts. Midterm and final are hard. If you study it shouldn't be too bad, but make sure you do the readings and study. He tells you exactly what he is expecting from you for essays.
I don't recommend taking this course with him unless you have to. I know his ratings are relatively high, but trust me. He makes this course unnecessarily difficult, and very "economics" heavy. His lectures are quite dense, with overly academic speech (and jokes, yes). His exams are less content more analysis based. More a 3rd yr course than 1st yr
Had Kempa for crm1300 and crm3305. Great teacher . I would suggest going to his classes. You learn waayyy more then just doing the readings. Especially for crm3305 no power points just him talking all class. But he makes the material interesting and very easy to understand. Really chill and funny teacher Crm1300 lectures make understanding easier
Great prof. His lectures were always very interesting. He was very clear on his expectations for the essays on the exams and on the research paper. He's very easy to talk to and genuinely wants to help his students succeed
You feel like even though you may not enjoy criminology his teaching style makes up for it. He is in love with the subject and enjoys teaching, it really makes you want to come to class just to listen to him. He loves joking around and telling us stories. Makes you forget that it's a university class (in a good way).
by far the most charismatic prof you'll ever have. super entertaining, he uses accents all the time; you'll laugh. He's vocabulary is ridiculous so you might feel super lost sometimes. Pretty economics heavy for a first year class, but honestly he's so wonderful he makes up for it. If you're going to take crim, take it with him.
He is a really funny guy but does not know when to stop the jokes and concentrate on course material. He is a tough grader and it is a tough class. DO NOT TAKE AS AN EASY ELECTIVE it is not easy.
Bring a laptop because he talks fast. He makes lots of jokes which can make the class fun, but it can be really annoying too and you can get lost when you are trying to focus on the material. I don't know if I would take another course with him if there were other options.
Knowledgeable, knows alot about criminology.
His lectures are so interesting, I loved going to class. He tells stories that relate to the subject material and are super funny and easy to remember for the exam. Midterm and final were both easy and he's not that tough of a grader. He's very fair and will use a curve to get the highest grade possible for everyone. Don't get the textbook.
He talks a lot so be ready to take notes. He has really weird rules like don't eat yogurt in class but I think thats normal for old profs. Go to class or you'll miss a lot.
Show up to class, pay attention and you'll pass. Don't be late because he will single you out and embarrass you lol
Kempa genuinely wants his students to do well. He gave lots of instructions and is clear with what he wants so the class is fairly easy if you do the readings and go to class. No powerpoints tho, it can be easy to zone out when he's lecturing. The only negative is that he takes forever to give you grades back. Other than that, highly recommend.
This man! I love Kempa great Lectures and he make sure you get to understand what he talks about! Jokes are super Dad like which is funny! Pretty amazing overall he loves to sing! 10/10
Total piece of work professor. Youd think professors were trained to not share their personal opinions all of the time, but this guy does it all. Especially at a time of such divide in the world, youd think profs would remain as objective as possible. All of that has been thrown out the window. Kempa has no class and it shows.
Nice guy! I can tell he just wants his students to do well and he tries hard to achieve that. He is a fast talker so beware lol.
Professor Kempa is by far the best prof I have had in the midst of this pandemic. Exceptionally understanding of the different circumstances students may be going through right now and just takes away the additional stress and anxiety students are feeling during this time. His lectures are incredibly interesting, he makes it very fun and exciting.
I loved this class. He makes the subject interesting and easy to understand.
The highlight of my first semester. Super laid-back and he made class so fun. I will definitely try to take another one of his classes!
Kempa was a great prof to have. He was hilarious and told so many stories! There were only 2 projects, 1 midterm and 1 exam. All were marked fairly, and he even wrote out the format for each assignment. Some of his lectures did get a little boring, but it's bound to happen with the course material. Loved his class, would take it again!!
Kempa is a great prof. The readings for this course are really heavy but he is super fun and definitely recommend for any course! He knows the material really well and is great at answering questions.
This guy is GOATED. Honestly didn't go to lectures that much this past semester but whenever I did he made it worth it. Funny and will never just read off the slides, he will take time to explain it using real day-to-day stuff you can relate to. Elite teacher
Kempa is literally the best. He explains everything super clearly and always clarifies when people have questions. He makes class super fun even in the morning and online. Clearly knows his stuff, will definitely try to take another class with him.
Amazing prof! He was funny & kept his lectures entertaining. One paper, one midterm and a take-home exam. He grades fairly, also allowed me to resubmit a paper for a higher grade which was great. Not hard to pass. Textbook for readings but I personally didnt use mine much
Super fun prof. Very easy going with due dates and extensions. Incorporates current events into the course learning and allows for casual discussions. He also sang and played the guitar at the beginning of class on days that class was at 8:30 am.
He understands what is happening in the real world and does not share his political views.
Very easy class. Didn't read nor listen during the lectures. Exams are written essays. Easy to write about whatever and still get an A. Kinda feel bad for taking advantage of how chill he is but whatever.
Kempa is a great prof. His lectures are entertaining and he makes the content easy to understand. Would definitely recommend
Kempa is a really good prof who makes his lectures interesting and is super straightforward with assignments. As long as you go to the lectures before the exam/midterm, you'll be fine
Professor Kempa's lectures are informational, entertaining, and lively. He is a great teacher who genuinely loves what he does and it translates into his lectures. However he doesn't go over the readings, he adds onto them, so it's essential to participate in class in order to pass. Great prof, hilarious, and his grading criteria is clearly stated.
I loved Kempa's class, I'm now looking specifically for classes he teaches. His lectures are recorded but you're missing out if you don't go. I actually want to wake up for his 8am class. He grades fairly, there are a lot of readings that are important but if you don't have time, he does go over the topics during lectures. He's also very interactiv
Prof Kempa is the best! He is really passionate about criminology and it shows. He will also add his own stories to lectures to make them more interesting. LOL, he even played guitar for us once! The course itself is a bit of work, we only have about 3-4 assignments, my advice is DO THE READINGS!
Listen, Kempa is a pretty funny dude, but anyone that said his class was easy is a liar!! I worked harder in his elective class than my program class. Personally, I didn't understand his course. I passed bc at the very least he told us the exam question in advance and thank god for the class google doc
Professor Kempa is one of the best professors Ive come across in all my time in university. He actually makes me want to attend 8 am classes and makes the course so enjoyable. His analysis of many topics is very well-prepared and he is very knowledgeable and kind. The course is heavy though but hes very lenient and an easy grader. Recommend!!
By far the best prof I had that semester. I always looked forward to his class. He's so so funny and he genuinely cares about his students. He was very accommodating of the individual needs of each student and was so receptive to feedback. Almost switched my major to crim because of his class.
Honestly, nothing bad to say about Kempa! He gives great, interactive lectures. He's truly a great prof and is understanding!
One of the best profs Ive had so far. His lectures are very entertaining and his passion for the subject clearly shows. The course material was interesting and he made difficult concepts easy to understand. Assignments were at times vague but not difficult. Overall a great professor whos very knowledgeable. Take Kempas class if you can!
One of the best professor. Super energetic and GREAT lectures. Subject is so interresting and Professor Kempa really cares about students (Gave us 2 extra weeks for assigment because we had too much things going on). Gives great assignment but is a little harsh on correction, gives good feedbacks tho. Would 100% take other classes with him.
A great prof who is extremely passionate about policing. I don't usually enjoy 3hr 8:30am lectures but he made each one fun. The concepts were difficult to understand but he made them much easier. He is accessible outside of class too. He calls on random students to answer questions which was nerve-wracking but that would be my only complaint
Dr Kempa was my favourite professor by far! Easy material as long as you are interested in it, but there was a lot of reading involved. Overall he's great!
I don't enjoy 3 hrs lectures, but Kempa was really engaging and really took the time to explain the course and the material. The thing I liked the most about the course is how clear he is about what he is expecting in the assignments. He is also very reasonable and understanding as he gave multiple extensions for the assignments.
Professor Kempa is extremely engaging and passionate about what he teaches. His class was my favourite this year. He's seriously the best, is very understanding, flexible, and charismatic and teaches the course material very effectively and clearly. Would 100% take one of his classes again :)
fun lectures and was very accommodating (I think he would let you hand things in late) but grades tough and assigns a crazy amount of readings. the lecture slides were also not very in depth so if you didn't take good lecture notes you're sort of stuck. we had one take home midterm, one paper, and the final was also take home.
Really funny and chill guy. Hes really good at giving lectures- downside is that the slides are not as in depth so be prepared to take hella notes. Really nice about due dates and will give extensions. Was graded on midterm, paper, and final (all take home) + he gives tips for each exam in class
Funny guy, super accommodating, lectures were in person, on Zoom, & recorded in case you couldn't make it to class, multiple extensions, 3 tests (all take home). Lots of reading though & you need to actually do them. Assignment guidelines are a bit vague but they're still pretty easy. PowerPoints don't contain much info so take lots of notes
Kempa gives amazing lectures. I've had him twice now and I'm never left without direction in his classes. He is honest with his feedback and will devote time and resources to make sure you understand the subject properly. I encourage students to go to his office hours if confused about anything in his class. Great prof, would take again.
Incredible prof. Attendance was mandatory but lectures were streamed and recorded on teams in case people could not make it. Other than the midterm and final (which were both online and open book) there was only one research paper. Kempa explains things very clearly and is hilarious. I highly recommend taking a class with him.
Incredible professor with very entertaining lectures and anecdotes. Graded on one paper, one midterm, and one final exam (all take-home and fair). He assigns a lot of readings but tbh I didn't find them necessary. He records all the lectures so if you miss something it's easy to catch up. 100% would take another one of his classes.
My absolute favourite prof of all time. Hilarious guy, personable, and friendly!! He's accessible outside of class through email, and responds very quickly. Dr. Kempa also offered an online version of CRM1101 for the days students were unable to make it to campus. If you put in the work you'll do fine.
Love Kempa. Super entertaining and funny. Honestly have no complaints and would highly suggest you take one of his classes!
Pretty good prof, a lot of readings but it is actually interesting stuff, not just theoretical jargon.
Took this course for better grades, felt worried at first cause I'm not good at writing. ALL assignments were writing but they were easy, you get everything from his slides, and even if you rarely go to class you can still get good grades if you push yourself to write something logically. Don't be afraid to ask he's been helpful all the time.
pretty cool prof, very funny and interesting to listen to. all assignments (including midterm and exam) are writing-based, so avoid if you hate writing. lectures are recommended to fully understand course content but you can miss them semi-regularly and still do fine if you read the slides and understand his concepts.
Kempa is one of the best crim profs at uofO. He keeps you engaged in lectures, and is an easy marker. Really just wants to see you succeed.
Hands down one of the best professors encountered at uOttawa. Pro's: very funny guy, caring, manages to clearly explain difficult subjects, grading criteria is very clear, we always knew what to expect, relied anecdotes to subjects all the time, never monotone, etc. Cons: heavy lectures, yet they were interesting.
Prof. Kempa is great! His lectures and interesting and engaging, funny and cool guy
Kempa is the best teacher the University of Ottawa has! He keeps the class engaged and is so funny! Your final grade is based on three components : a written paper, a take-home midterm and exam. I suggest buying the textbooks online instead of in person so you can look up key terms using Command+F which is helpful for the midterm and exam questions
Everything was online, including the exams, and he was gracious with the time he would give us to complete them. One thing I would say is make sure you think twice about purchasing the textbook. I paid over $150 for it and never opened it once and still came out with a good grade because of how much his slides/lectures covered the textbook material.
Professor Kempa was a captivating professor who kept me excited to attend each lecture. Funny, approachable, and fair. Textbooks are required, but the readings complement the lectures heavily. Compared to my other classes, this class had the most amount of reading, but Prof. Kempa made up for it through his engaging lectures.
Amazing teacher who was so captivating and good to learn from. I looked forward to his class every time as the highlight of my week. Tests were not super difficult you just needed to know the course content and examples. He is the type of teacher you want in every class. Set the standard for excellent amazing teacher.
Made every class entertaining, I learned the most from Kempa and could not recommend him anymore. He is clear with what he wants and gives great feedback on exams and assignments. Textbook was not necessary if you pay attention in class and take notes. He is available outside of class and truly wants his students to succeed. Best CRM prof at UO
can somebody tell him to start a podcast or something? I could watch those lectures all day! Yes he's funny, and engaging, but he's also incredibly compassionate and empathetic and supportive. Definitely cares about his students :')
Best. Professor. Ever. Kempa knows how to get students engaged. Time flew by in his classes because he taught the content in an interesting and creative way (anecdotes) and cracked tons of jokes. Loved his lectures and would highly recommend him.
absolutely one of the best profs, 1 assignment, 1 midterm and a final and all were very clear on what they were expecting. lectures are not mandatory but are super fun as he always has a great mood and makes the environment awesome to be in. i would absolutely recommend taking this class
One of the best profs at uOttawa. He keeps lectures entertaining, prepares you adequately for papers/exams, and still uses the hybrid format so you can look back at lectures you missed.
He's a nice guy and really funny! We only had 1 paper, 1 midterm (take home) and a final exam (take home). He broadcast his lectures live, and he posts them on brightspace. I only went to 3 classes and I never watched the lectures and my final grade was an A. This class can really boost your average! Overall, he's great and an easy grader
Amazing professor! His lectures are super engaging which makes the content easy to remember. Lectures are recorded so you can watch them back whenever. There technically is a lot of reading assigned (2 textbooks), but you likely could get away with not doing them all. Only marked by 3 take-home assignments which all had very clear instructions.
Michael Kempa is a great professor. Although readings are recommended, you don't really need to read anything and can pass without trying. He gives a easy research project, online midterm and online final that is due in a week and can be done at home. Very easy professor!
Such an amazing prof, I couldn't recommend him more! I took him for an elective, not expecting too much in terms of enjoyment, but he was able to make the lectures interactive and engaging! Rubrics for all assignments were clear and easy to follow and the exam was a take-home. If you attend/watch lectures and put in some interest, it's an easy A :)
Prof Kempa was the best prof I've ever had. He knows how to engage the class and is hilarious with his stories. Would recommend to anyone looking for an interesting crim class with very little readings. His essays were straight forward, he was super knowledgeable and his TA's were very accessible.
Professor kempa was my favourite prof of all times. He is super engaging and so funny. His lectures are always posted on brightspace if you had to miss class, since he records them. He is such a great prof and can take a boring topic and make it fun. I love the way he engages with students. readings are recommended but not mandatory!!!
Kempa is an engaging professor who makes lectures fun. The class is writing-heavy but manageable if you stay on top of the work. Unstuckstudy was a big help for synthesizing concepts before exams.
Kempa is an engaging lecturer, and is passionate about his job. The lectures are more important over the textbook in this class, so ALWAYS attend, and always manages to relate material to the real world. He is best reached over email, as he has a busy life (like all of us). Exams were take-home application questions, and rely on heavily lectures.
Kempa was amazing, if you enjoy criminology i would without a doubt tell you to take his class, a lot of reading, but all of the readings are interesting and captivating !
he's a great speaker and entertaining, all evaluations are online which make it easier.
Awesome person and prof, super easy grader and you straight up don't have to show up if you don't want to. Showing up is for pure entertainment value, which is very high thanks to Kempas awesome stories and even bringing his dog Medgie! Overall, you can straight up never do any readings and get an A+. Would take again 100%
I loved this class! Super engaging lectures and overall not that heavy of a workload. One paper, a take-home and a final. Would 100% recommend
Kempa streams the classes live so it's optional to come to lectures which is great -- however he is a very entertaining lecturer so I would recommend going to lectures. The workload is not heavy with just a take-home paper, midterm and final. Would take again
Incredible prof, lectures are all recorded so attendance is not needed and All assignments are take-home. Kempa is really funny and understanding, revised all of my grades if i was not satisfied with the way the TA handled it. 100% Recommend this class.
lectures could have been joined from home online
Likely the best lecturer I've seen at uOttawa thus far. Extremely knowledgeable and talks about concepts so they're easy to understand and follow, even when considered complex. Makes the kind of jokes where you genuinely laugh instead of forcing one. TAs my semester were very tough markers; which he admitted. You will not regret taking his classes.
TAs were insanely tough markers, gave me a 62% on my first exam and gave vague feedback. One meeting with Kempa, he bumped it up to 85% and gave precise feedback. That should tell you all you need to know, but he also has a genuine passion for the subject. His lectures are very engaging, he uses examples in the news and videos, and he's hilarious.
I've had Kempa for multiple courses throughout my CRM major, and he's one of my favourites by far. He's understanding, knows what he's talking about, has engaging lectures, and grading is always fair. You will actually learn something from his classes, without getting bored.
Imagine the funniest, kindest, and most iconic prof. That is Mike Kempa.
Kempa was so great! Going to his lectures was so much fun, and I enjoyed every moment. He's hilarious and elaborates well. Class was never boring and he always made lectures available on Zoom or recorded them afterward. Everything was takehome and pretty easy, he would bump students' grades up if they felt their marks were not good enough. skibidi
Go to the lectures then you will be good
By far the best way to start my crim degree. Kempa is legitimately the funniest prof I've ever taken; his lectures are super interesting, and he's very accessible outside of class. I did end up appealing every grade I received by TAs in that class, but he turned it into a running joke and was super understanding and always validated my concerns.
