Structured required reading, less structure otherwise. Grades depend on ability to write well and understanding. Participation encouraged. Group project required for Comm/Media 101. Web authoring helps this class group project.
This guy gives great feedback and insights to all the weekly topics. There is a lot of work with discussions and a short paper due every week. But you can learn a lot and the topics are almost always very interesting.
really hard to pay attention to in class but very smart and knows his stuff....I would recommend online classes with this guy!
Great instructor; I enjoyed his online class immensely.
This guy is fantastic! Politically aware, and getting important info out there. Class isn't too hard, but assignments and reading are informative. Really interesting stuff. Take this guy for persuasion and mass media courses, definitely.
This teacher doesn't give tests, which is refreshing if you're over-loaded with them. He only expects a few written assignments and weekly bulletin board posts. He's really friendly, reasonable and recommended.
Michael is a great teacher!! I learned a lot in his class that I can use in my daily life. His comments to students were helpful and thoughtful. I recommend this class to everyone!!
A do as I say not as I do professor: his posts reflect his bizarre opinions and he doesn't offer supporting facts, his course material is riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, unhelpful, unclear. A ridiculous waste of time and tuition!
He is a great teacher. If you're interesting in taking communications, he is definetly the teacher to take it with. He has quite a few assignments but spaces them out. He also gives really good feedback on all the papers.

Not sure why we needed text book i didn't open it once all quarter. HE is a great instuctor and easy to work with.
This was one of the most interesting classes I have ever had. I took it as an online class and the entire class just totally delved into the subject matter. I learned a lot, it was easy, and the instructor kept things lively!
I took it online and enjoyed it. It was fairly straight forward, as were the assignments. It is stuff that is easy enough to understand, and is a good 101 class. The lectures were done well and there were also some video lectures.
Interesting guy. He is entertaining....great stories, comical at times. His tests are somewhat difficult.
Mr. Korolenko is very helpful. Group project was fun. Final multiple choices exam was hard.

This was my second online Korolenko class. I find him to be pretty easy. He grades the papers fairly, and the course content is easy to understand. He also encourages open discussion on the boards. I would recommend it, easy A.
Great teacher! Easy to understand, helpful and a fun class! Not a lot of work but the work assigned pertains to the class and there is purpose. He is not into lengthy 'busy' work. I learned a lot and would take another class by him.
M.K. is a really good teacher! I took him online winter 07-08. I haven't read the textbook since the first week! He creates his own online teaching materials, with little video blips of him teaching something, which is better than the book. We had 3 very short reports, a final, and a group project. He's a great teacher...I highly reccomend him!
Absolutley one of the most intelligent teachers I've ever had. Class was extremely interesting and he did a great job explaining everything. Assignments were straightfoward and easy, tests were the same if you attended class. Really nice dude. I'm taking him for another communications class. I highly reccomend him.
he doesn't give the room to dicuss about grading, even though it's not reasonable. he seems like a nice guy during the whole quarter, but after the class finished, he just doesn't care about what you say. i did everything i could, and i asked why i got only b, he just said that's what you earned, and now i consider this dicussion closed.
Great teacher, great guy. I like his unconventional style of teaching. Took class online, piece of cake!
I couldn't follow along in the online class, and he put things under the wrong categories. Syllabus was under "getting started" category, instead of "syllabus" category.
This was one of the best classes I have ever taken at BC! The teacher was really nice and there was barely any work. I learned a lot in this class and found it to be very interesting! His assignments are easy and very interesting to do! I loved this class!!!
Took class online. 3 papers, 1 group project. 2 posts/week and one multiple choice final. Readings are textbook, non-fiction book, and online lectures. Overall class wasn't difficult, but you need to keep up with the reading assignments.
Really fun/productive class. You have to participate at least twice in the discussions however they are extremely enlightening and fun and you end up contributing way more than you need to. The workload is relatively light.
Took this online! Such a great course! MK is an awesome teacher and he is very light and fun! The class was so informative and very interesting! HIGHLY recommend this class!!!
This was a good class and Korolenko is a really good teacher. He is especially excellent at individual feedback on your scripts. You can tell he is really passionate and knowledgeable about script-writing.
The class is pretty straight-forward. Post discussions twice a week and weekly/biweekly 2 page case studies. Learned a bit about propaganda.
OK teacher
Pretty good teacher and class. He is a little condesending and has a bit of an ego, but overall he gives good feedback and encourages participation. The way he organizes his calendar for the class is hard to get at first, but you get used to it. You can buy both of the books he uses used and save a ton of money over BC's bookstore prices.
Interesting lectures but easily sidetracked. A bit egotistical but informational. Organization is lacking a bit and doesn't provide much feedback. Still, texts are great and still a fun class.
Ok class. Professor can be condescending when you are asking questions. Definitely doesn't believe in "no such thing as a stupid question." Otherwise good professor and class. Interesting topics.
excellent teacher, excellent class
Study for the exams, even if it sounds easy. Lots of memorizing for exam, but good class. Great teacher.
I took this class online. We were divided into "groups" for the quarter. This meant that I interacted with about 4 other students the entire quarter, very minimally. This class requires a lot of self-guidance. Overall, the teacher is understanding, and you will get a good grade, as long as you complete all assigned tasks. Very little interactivity.
This is an online course, and not a subject I thought I had a strong interest in - but I found this class to be very well organized with lots of interesting material - from propaganda and subliminal advertising to the evolution/creationist debate. Korolenko seems both opinionated but fair. Good class. Makes you think.
Took him for a Propaganda class, real interesting guy. He tries to make the class interesting, and does so pretty well. He's obviously very opinionated, but does his best to be as unbiased as any of us can. Tests are not too difficult as long as you pay attention and take notes, overall good teacher and interesting class.
Took this class online. Very opinionated teacher, (it's a good thing in this class). Interesting guy. Interesting class. Easy homework but plenty of reading.
This class is a lot of reading. But you won't regret taking this class. This class is fun and it really makes you think.
Took this class online. Course was interesting, and what is most important doable. Organization of files was complicated, but once you'll get it; you'll be fine. If you'll complete all the requirement and participate in course discussions, it's impossible to get grade lower than B-. Like the course and instractor.
The class is easy if you read the modules and turn in the assignments on time. I haven't even used the textbook at all, haven't needed it. Uses 5 case studies as the main grades in the class and provides quick grading and feedback. Has always responded to emails very quickly. Take this class!
I didn't have a problem with the class, the instructions were clear and the assignments weren't extremely hard. However, this guy is extremely opinionated. He leaves sarcastic comments on people's work if he doeesn't agree with them. I don't get a good vibe from him at all. Luckily, it's an online class and I don't have to see him in person.
Expect a lot of reading each week. Assignments (essays) are not hard but he is picky on grammar etc. Only 1 quiz! Overall, an interesting class but time consuming. Maybe take on campus?
He is bad with online classes and is insensitive to students with tough loads on their plates. He has discussion boards due at 5pm on Sundays and if you are late on one you fail the class. Your grade does not reflect your effort and he assumes you are a bad student from the get go. 010 would not recommend.
SO MUCH READING. This class is extremely time consuming. If you miss one discussion board you are locked out of the next weeks material and have to have him re-open the board for you. If the class asks him to do this too many times he will stop opening and you will fail the class if you miss any more because you can't move on to next weeks work.
Such an interesting and amazing class. The discussions we had were so in-depth and enlightening. I really got a lot out of the class. There's a lot of reading, but in terms of homework it's just discussion posts and every once in a while a short paper (like 2 pages). I recommended it to all of my friends and MK communicated a lot with us.
Seriously, if you have a life, don't sign up for this class with this professor. The amount of reading he gives students is ridiculous. If you miss a discussion, he won't reopen them. Which is an automatic fail and he will tell you to drop the class asap. He doesn't even allow partial credit. And he comes off very rude, even in his biosyllabus.
If you have a shred of any life outside school, do not take this class. This teacher decides that using a forceful method works best. The modules are all locked until the week of and each step of the module is locked until you complete the one before. If you miss a discussion, you get locked out; missed the deadline for latework: MUST DROP CLASS!
Terrible teacher, incredibly unhelpful and snide. Would never take a class from this guy again
Professor is an interesting & likable character in person, passionate, very sci-fi biased. I got no feedback on my work at all - but good marks, so I let it go. His course & books are out of date, his emails confusing, he was distracted by personal matters, barely taught. Extra credit was on campus, despite online course, odd.
He is a very talented man and has a lot to offer, but on online classes, THE AGRESSIVENESS OF HIS POLICY AND MANNERS aren't needed. If you miss a discussion, you are locked out . Had to drop the class even though I love the subject. If only he were a little bit less focused on dates and more open to the students it would be a great class.
My favorite instructor at Bellevue College. I read a lot of other reviews that said the way his class is set up is hard if you "have a life." I work full time, go to school full time, and had no issues receiving an A. I feel like this class is really good at teaching time management as well as the course material.
I took both CMS 102 & 132 with Mr. Korolenko. His classes are interesting and informative. He gives clear instructions throughout the quarter about what he expects from you and you have to stay on top of the timeline. Don't wait til the last minute to complete assignments. Work hard and you will do well, slack off and you won't!
Mr. Korolenko is a great teacher. He is fair, gives extra credit points on all assignments if you go above and beyond and is ALWAYS there if you have a question. He usually returns grades back within 24 hour of submitting the assignment. I would take this class again any day.
Great class but a ton of work and lots of reading. Not the kind of class to procrastinate in. MK provides a plethora of information to consume. Wouldn't mind taking another class of his.
This is a great class, get ready to read the book, the online material. Learned a lot from this class.
Honestly, this class isn't really that hard. He does provide a lot of reading, but you necessarily don't have to read all of it to understand what topic you're learning for the week. Get a general idea and some details, and you'll understand/pass the class. Also, always be organized with the due dates so you don't miss anything & fail.
There's a TON of reading and the discussions are locked until you go thru them all which was VERY annoying. If I actually read all that he had posted each week I'd be on the computer 24/7. Luckily you can make it by gleaning the main ideas. 6ish discussions/week and 2pg papers every other week. Not as bad as it sounds. Doesn't grade hard.
Loved this class! It is honestly not that hard if you do keep up on the assignments. He is very clear in his grading and sets up his assignments at least a week in advance to get them done. He is caring about his students and is always willing to answer questions by email. Would definitely take again. Just keep up with the class work!
This class has a LOT of reading, but very little homework. Interesting topics and provides multiple perspectives. Unfortunately, the required book has a conflict of interest. $175 for a 10 year old (175 page) book, written by the teacher, and rarely used. That shouldn't be allowed.
I am taking his CMST132 online class recently. I have to say it has VERY MUCH READINGS AND HOMEWORK every weeks!!! Too much reading. 6 discussions each week, and 2 pages paper another week. It feels like I am taking two classes. ;( He is not a hard grader. He gives full points if you do homework on time. This is the only thing I feel good...
This guy... Likes to put a lot of work into his online classes. Talking about 20 news articles per week, which would be fine, if it wasn't some of the most depressing news articles I've ever read. Too much for me to handle when this is pretty much expected to be done by midweek. Everything is due by 5pm instead of midnight. Make sure you have time!
Michael is the best professor I've ever had. He is very passionate about film and knows a lot about script writing. He gives great feedback on your scripts. The homework was also easy. He will help you out if you ask. I only wish this wasn't an online class, but I still loved it. If you have a passion for film, take this class!
This was, by far, one of the best classes I've taken in college. There is a lot of reading, I'm not gonna lie. But if you care about world events, social justice, and politics, you're gonna be in heaven. We covered propaganda throughout history, world events, religion, and gender. It was great and I can't wait to take another class of his!
Definitely not the worst prof I have had here but not the best. The amount of readings in his online class is insane and don't have time for them all so I usually skip it unless needed. There are a ton of essays and discussions so the work load is very heavy, but easy as well. Make sure you stay on top of it before the due date and you'll be fine.
I had previously taken CMST 131, 133, and 294 from Michael yet he failed me for this particular class. I had not received any failing grades on assignments but rather we had a falling out over the direction of the film club ( I was president at the time). If I had realized that he changed my grade I would have filed a complaint with the dean.
The amount of readings and discussion posts is insane. Anywhere from 2-6 discussions a week and an essay every 2 weeks. There are also quite a few long articles that you have to read weekly. Do not take this class if you are not prepared for a very heavy workload.
SO MUCH READING! Up to 56 articles, 6 discussion posts (plus a response for each) by Sun 5pm, and a 2 page case study every week by Wed 5pm. EVERYTHING is under Modules and everything is locked, including the assignments so you have to 'read' everything in chrono order before you can even see the week's assignments
I love this professor. Having gone through personal things this quarter he has been extremely nice & super accommodating. The homework was extremely reasonable and not too heavy. Every article was interesting to read and the few essays we did have were very easy to complete. One of the best professors & wish I could take him again. Highly Recommend
Lots of reading, but that is actually a good thing. So many easy discussion questions that were really a participation grade. Only issue I really had was his essay grading. But if you are okay with keeping up with all the assignments it really is an easy A
One of my favorite profs. Organized online format (all in canvas modules). As long as you're consistent on weekly assignments/discussions you'll be good. Time management is key. I see a lot of complaints on here about the amount of reading, but he doesn't make you purchase a textbook, and I skimmed through most of the articles and got an A.
I loved Professor Korolenko! At first it seemed like a lot of work but this was one of the best classes I've taken at BC. There were several weekly discussion boards, a few essays, and a couple other miscellaneous assignments. He grades really easy and each discussion board I got extra credit.
Excellent professor who clearly has a great understanding of the material he is teaching and teaches it well.
Great teacher who knows what he is talking about, has extensive knowledge about the subject & concept of class is fun. TONS and tons of readings via articles and excerpts from books but provides background information needed for assignments.
Extra credit on each weekly discussion based on how well you respond (super easy if you put 300 to 400+ words). Some big essays/assignments, but super easy grader. LOTS of reading, but you'll pass if you skim + get the gist. Passionate prof. who knows what he's talking about. Textbook is good for details but weekly powerpoints has the main ideas.
It's easy to pass, but if you go above and beyond he will reward you. Teaches very valuable lessons. You have a lot of autonomy in your weekly discussions and the few assignments. No weekly quizzes. Be prepared to think critically and don't assume he operates from the position of the articles he posts.
So glad I signed up for this class. Professor Korolenko is very kind and knowledgeable. This class mostly consisted of a few discussions each week, some essays, and one final which was really easy. He provided lots of interesting content each week. Once you understand how the class runs you dont have to read everything.
He gives so much assignments in one week and have essays due every other week. Lots of workload like I'm already stressed having other classes.
For this class, I think that this professor was a really great one. There are three (3) assignments which are like the "big" assignments. And he was able to take the idea of "looking to the future" and made it into a museum of sorts.
The coursework is simple, however the instructor makes it near impossible to ever get a perfect grade. I reached out to Mr.Korolenko hoping for more feedback on one of my assignments, and received multiple VERY aggressive responses from him when I simply asked for feedback. He only changed his attitude after I told him I was reporting him to HR. L
Homework consists of multiple weekly discussions and 4 short papers. It can be pretty time-consuming, but effort and hard work are appreciated, and you can easily earn extra credit with quality work. Overall easy A if you do the work and genuinely try to learn from it -- the content is very interesting and relevant, but requires a lot of reading.
MK uses modules to "teach." The info is often very dense and confusing (but you can get away with skimming) and did not provide clarification when I asked. Class is discussion based with essays every other week or so. His grading is arbitrary but it's easy to get bonus points. He is pretentious, pompous, and rude.
This Professor is so snarky in the way he posts guidelines; even throughout explanations, he posts in a snarky manner that is demeaning; the way he structures the class on Canvas is more of a headache than I thought it would be, I feel like if you can avoid taking this class you should, the course material is interesting, and that saves the class.
This was a 5-credit course, but I felt like I was doing work for a 15-credit course. So much reading for each assignment, and insane amounts of discussions each week. I'd definitely avoid this class if you could.
He seems to really know his stuff which is good, but he also seems to have a huge ego and is very snide/rude with guidelines or even just comments on your work. Not the worst professor at BC but definitely not the best.
For a "political" class, it says a lot that Korolenko chose every article and quote that make up the curriculum. Textbooks: a book published in the '80s and another one written by a self-help "entrepreneur." His commentary is arrogant, short-sighted, and devoid of any kind of perspective reaching beyond his own background as a comfortable academic.
Mostly just discussion posts about your opinions on different articles (not a lot of actual learning). The class is very writing-heavy - the hardest week was 9 discussion posts with a 2-page case study. Strict late policy too. Not super difficult material, just really time-consuming.
I found Professor Korolenko to be pushing his own ideas and narratives about complicated political topics throughout the quarter, its either this is some meta way to teach us about propaganda, or its just him pushing a political agenda. The amount of writing was insane, and the deadlines were weird, like 5pm for a async deadline is crazy.
as long as you follow the rules you'll get a good grade in the class. Its a lot of reading but if you work on the class everyday its not that hard to stay on track.
I really enjoyed Communication 102 Into to Mass Media. I can't think of any complaints
