He is one of the best professors i have ever had. He genuinely cares about the material and whether or not his students understand it. He does not lecture from the book, but this is no big deal because he puts all of his lectures online. His lectures are great and helpful. For tests just study his lecture power points for a easy A or B.
This was the most interesting science class I have taken. You cannot just memorize for the tests (especially the last two); you have to understand and apply what you learned. VERY helpful in office hours. You can tell he wants his students to succeed. Genetics is a tough subject but I feel like he is the best teacher at Auburn for it.
He was the best professor I've ever had here at Auburn, especially as a science major. Highly highly recommend. He is great in office hours and really helpful and approachable. The tests are difficult and the final is a cumulative all MC exam.
Really interesting class and Dr. S is great. Very helpful in office hours. He cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed, however his tests are pretty difficult and the final was the most difficult out of them all. Test questions come mostly from lecture however there were always a few that I had no clue where they came from.
Very interesting but tough class. 4 exams (14% each) based off his lectures. He puts his PowerPoints online, but GO TO CLASS because some test questions are based off concepts detailed heavily during lecture but briefly covered on the PowerPoint. The textbook isn't necessary but reading it did help me do better on his exams.
All the lectures are posted on Canvas, but it is best to go to class. A few of the powerpoints were mostly pictures, so if you weren't there, you won't know what's going on. Don't count on the final to save your grade. It was 100 multiple choice questions and very difficult. You can use the book, but he goes out of order in it, so watch for that.
One of the best teachers I have had at Auburn University. It is very evident that he cares for his students and wants you to succeed! Powerpoint are posted online, but it's essential that you go to class to get all the information. Tests are difficult and require a lot of thinking and application. Overall, hard class but definitely worth it.
Best professor I've had at Auburn. He's one of those professors that makes you work for every point, but at the end of the class you've learned so much. Tests aren't tricky, but you really have to think about each question and apply the stuff you've learned. Very approachable and a really nice guy outside of class.
Dr. S is tough, and tests were tricky, but he is the best option for Cell Biology. Tests were all 40 multiple choice questions. At the beginning of the class he said that the book was necessary to pass, but I never used it to study because he doesn't follow it, so it was confusing to me. You absolutely have to go to lectures to do well.
Dr. S is a good lecturer but his test are extremely tricky and difficult to do well on. 100% have to go to lecture if you want a chance to do well because he tests 95% from what he says in class, not the slides. Not the best but not the worst either. Final wasn't cumulative.
Class is tough mostly bc of his extremely TRICKY exams (even if you know all the material). Five exams, 30 multiple choice each. Very difficult to get an A, but possible if you start studying a week in advance. Very appreciative of the difficulty of this class, tho. Not exaggerating-exams were harder than Squilly's exams for OChem. DON'T BUY TBOOK!
THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. His class is quite difficult, no question, but he knows the material backwards and forwards, is very accessible outside class, REALLY cares about his students, and has phenomenal lectures. Be prepared to study a lot, but the class will be so rewarding if you do.
Tests are very difficult. Memorizing the notes backwards and forwards does not guarantee you an A. You have to really think. Tests are all MC and you have to choose the "most right" answer which makes them harder. I loved Dr. S for genetics but would not recommend him for cell bio.
No matter what professor you get, Cell Biology will challenge you. Ochem was the only other class that pushed me this hard. Don't take other hard classes with this one. Dr. S's lectures were amazing, albeit fast, and his notes are pretty barebones, meaning you have to write a ton really fast. I learned more from his class than any other I've taken
Dr. S is a great professor, but cell bio is hands-down the hardest class you will take if you must. He posts his powerpoints online, but they are simple and he strays from them a lot. You must go to class, record the lectures, and rewrite notes more than once. Five tests are given, and they are unnecessarily confusing. Final is non-cumulative.
GO TO CLASS and record the lectures. When you relisten to the recordings, take the time to pause and them and basically type out every word he says into an outline after every class. Cell Bio is HARD and Dr. S doesn't make his exams easy, so you really have to KNOW the material to do well on the exams. Very understanding and fun to talk to.
This professor is amazing. He babies the class, walking through every step of every problem and taking the time to answer questions. Has an extraordinary amount of patience with both students and the concepts hes teaching and really makes the experience better for the students since we dont have to study as hard. Wish I could give him 6 stars.
He's a good teacher and lays things out very clearly. His tests are harder than most. The first two have short answer and the second two are multiple choice, and are easier. You'll probably need to study a bit more than average but you should be fine.
The material for this class is rather simple but the tests are very hard. He doesnt really go in depth with the concepts but the tests are very specific. If you dont go to class you wont pass because the PowerPoints themselves are not very helpful and he skips around in the book so it is hard to figure what to read.
dr s is AMAZING. you have to apply on the info and synthesize it to do well. by far one of the best professors I've had. he makes you work for it but his lectures cover everything you need to know so GO TO CLASS & RECORD HIM! super nice in his office hours, too
Dr. S is one of the best professors I have ever had. He explains difficult material well and makes its very understandable. He also really cares for his students and going to office hours really helps. Beware, his tests are hard, but he is very willing to help you do better.
Honestly my favorite teacher so far. His tests are hard, but I HIGHLY suggest going to his office hours after every test to look over it and learn from your mistakes. He truly cares for his students, and it is so evident. His class is challenging but rewarding, and I would take him again any day.
Studying the ppt doesn't help much (there's not much written on them usually) so go to class. His questions can be tricky: read thoroughly. The homework's worth 15% and hurts your grade if you don't put much effort in. Lectures can be dry, but Dr. S is great. Definitely bring your questions to office hours; he cares about helping you understand.
Going to class is not an option if you want to pass. It helps to record all of his lectures because he talks really fast, but all the information is relevant. Tries to make class as interesting as possible. Tests are super tricky and should be read through carefully.
Here's what you need to know (for BIOL4100): Your final grade in the class is solely determined by 5 multiple-choice only exams that are 20% each and the averages are in the 60-70 range every exam. He does not scale tests, final grades, or offer bonus. If you are good at taking exams, you can get an A in the class (it does happen), but not easily.
Dr. S is one of the best professors at Auburn University. Cell Bio is notoriously scary at Auburn, but he really does make it enjoyable.
Best professor Ive had by far. Took for genetics and made an A, took for cell bio and barely scraped a B. Not the professors fault though, cell bio is extremely difficult no matter who you take it with. I am a frequent class skipper and still able to make As, but I never missed a single class and recorded every lecture in here. Good luck!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN BIOCHEMISTRY. I love Dr. S, he's an amazing lecturer and extremely knowledgeable on the subject. He's willing to help and is accessible outside of class. But Cell Bio is a hard subject and his tests are extremely difficult. Don't take his class expecting an easy grade. Take him to learn the subject.
horrible. don't recommend. tests are extremely specific it's almost impossible to understand them. if you want to get a good grade don't take him. I studied a ton for this class and never saw any results, other classmates can relate to my situation.
Go to class, even if you do not want to take notes! ppts are empty. Do hw sets carefully bc they can hurt grade. Exam 2 is the hardest, so study a LOT. The other exams are MC, and sometimes have small details. Read them carefully. He is very good at explaining things, so ask questions. Covers a good amount of material. A is manageable with work.
whatever you do, do not take this class with him. The tests are so unnecessarily hard. It's very frustrating studying 2 weeks in advance for a test, feeling so prepared, and then he asks you the most specific, non related questions on the test. Don't do it.
Been a 4.0 student, and then Genetics of all classes came out of nowhere. Dr. S teaches from his powerpoints(which are useless), but what you come to realize is that no matter how much you study, or how well you know the material, it does not matter. His goal when making his exams is clear, how can he trick as many students as possible. DO NOT TAKE
Let me preface this by simply saying this guy is a terrible teacher. His teaching strategy is reading directly off of poorly put together PowerPoint slides without much elaboration at all. If you want a class where it is next to impossible to achieve an A and where tests are based off negligible information he throws on his slides because its in
Only took this class because his rating his relatively high, which is completely misleading. Do not take this genetics class. He makes this course as difficult as possible intentionally. Your GPA will suffer. For context, I was a 4.0 student before taking this course.
Dr. S was a great person outside of class. Went to his office hours multiple time and only missed class 3 times the entire semester and still came out with a D in the class. Topics discussed in class and in office hours would end up be confusing on the test and not what he told me and I even studied everyday but still wasn't enough.
The HARDEST class I have ever had. I have never studied so much and so hard to get a B in a class. I feel like I know material so extremely well, but the exams are ridiculously difficult. I went to office hours multiple times, read the book, rewrote all slides, watched youtube, etc and still couldn't do well on exams. I had a 4.0 before this.
This guy absolutely does not care about his students. His lectures are worthless. You need to be a geneticist with 40 plus years of experience to think how he does on his exam questions. If you take him, GOOD LUCK. Do not take, I repeat do not take.
Take this class for the material. You will learn a lot but getting the grade you want is a different story. Very helpful during office hours and easily approachable. However, I spent more effort here than ochem and physics and the results were worse. Be ready to know EVERYTHING. A is possible but definitely not easy. Good luck.
I took Dr. S for cell bio, and Im now currently in medical school. I can say confidently that his cell bio class is harder than the med school version of cell bio. In order to do well in this class, you NEED to study every daysince he focuses on small details, consider using Anki. Hes a great lecturer, but he does not hold back. Good luck.
Awesome guy, great lecturer, I learned SO much and it was interesting, but it was the hardest class I've ever taken (in my opinion...). His tests are very tricky and the 5 of them make up 100% of the grade. Having said that, I do not recommend taking this class during a worldwide pandemic and quarantine.
Dr. S is one of the nicest, approachable professors I have ever had. He really knows what he teaches and expects you to put in a lot of work for your grade. I took this class online and we had so much material every week. This is a tough class, but he is very thorough with what he expects. He is a very good professor, in my opinion.
A lot of material.
The nicest professor I've ever had but his test are incredibly hard. I do NOT recommend taking him if it's online because he doesn't teach at all and only post notes. I had a 4.0 before taking this class and definitely do not anymore lol..
Genetics was a difficult class; I feel like it would've been a little easier if it was in-person. Dr. S was so helpful and willing to work with you one on one if you needed anything! Never made anything less than an A in college until now. The class is hard (you have to work for it!), but Dr. S and SI were always available & helped a lot!
He gives super in depth information and tests insignificant details. You have to earn every single point in this class. I worked extremely hard this semester to get an A and looking back it really wasnt worth the sheer amount of effort I put in. This man wrecked my mental health. Good luck lol
I took this class completely online - when he didn't do lectures ("flipped classroom"). It was awful! I ended up having to withdraw because this class took a toll on my mental health. The tests were extremely specific and didn't have much to do with the lengthy word documents he liked to call "lectures". Dr. S and Genetics are GPA killers!
First email of the semester, says that this is his first time teaching online, and in the next breath says that he does no extra credit, no bonus points, and no scaling/rounding. So this is the first time youre doing this and no help for students? Should have waited till back in person because I basically had to teach the course to myself.
Listen this man is very nice and really is passionate. But this is most literally the hardest class I have ever taken and studied for. His tests are quite literally painful to take and if you want anything other then a C you may have to be severely academically amazing. I am not apparently. Nice man, worst tests I have taken, maybe dont take him.
Dr. S is an excellent professor. He is hard, but he is fair. He cares about your learning and he wants you to care about your learning, not just pursuing a grade. He is not easy, so if you just want an easy A, go somewhere else. As a pre-med, he is perfect for you because he helps you master genetics - and that pays off during MCAT prep.
Dr. S is one of the best professors and is a truly gifted lecturer. He expects students to not just know the material but to understand how things work together. His test require critical thinking. Overall, he does a great job preparing students for the MCAT biology section.
Dr. S is an amazing professor. His tests are hard but his standards and criteria are clear. You need to take notes in his class and when you get a bad grade early on, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. His tests get harder and more specific. All in all, I crammed for all of his exams and made mostly As, but I take really good notes.
Theres differing opinions around this prof, I can see why some love him but personally his class has taken a toll on my mental health. I have never made lower than a b in college (3rd year) and will be HAPPY to make a c in this class. You think you are confident in the material then get on the test and get wrecked. Overall do not recommend.
The material for this class isnt that difficult, but his exams expect you to be a geneticist. Extremely specific questions, I really dont know how anyone does well on these exams. I have a higher grade in biochem if that tells you anything. Hes accessible but nothing he says helps, Ive been to office hours 5 times and still cant figure it out
Dr. S is an amazing lecturer and he is always very clear about what material you should know for an exam and his expectations from students. If you just go to class, listen, read over your notes, and ask question, you will be rewarded with a good grade. If you don't go to class though, you will not do well
dr s is a great prof. if you skip class and reread his lecture notes each day, then wait last minute to study you wont do well. anyone on here saying the info isnt difficult but he makes it hard is either 1. not going to class or 2. has never taken a rigorous course. dr s truly cares about his students, but wants to see you put the effort in!
Surprisingly this class has probably been one of my favorites! Dr. S is an incredible lecturer- makes things interesting and understandable. He truly cares and wants to help, and makes sure to give you everything you need to be prepared. Take him!! I learned so much & can say Dr. S is a favorite professor, despite the difficulty of material.
Everyone gives Dr. S a bad review but I can assure you, those are just the people that don't go to class. Dr. S is by far my favorite teacher at Auburn. Yes, his test questions are super specific which can be difficult but all questions he asks are fair. He's always willing to help if you go to him and his lectures are super enjoyable.
I've never learned more in my life than I did in this class. It's extremely difficult but Dr. S truly forces you to learn genetics and he's not ashamed of it. He's an old-school Southern man (wears a tie to class) and does care about his students. If you take him, never give up in there. He was extremely gracious to me with my final grade. 10/10
I loved Dr. S. Genetics is a challenging course and Dr. S is a challenging professor, because he wants you to actually learn. Anyone that complains about him are the ones that are lazy or don't go to class. If you put in the work, you will do fine. Show up, take notes, and STUDY. I think you'll find him entertaining, as nothing is ever boring.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY. Listen I am a hard working biomed student. I got a 108 in O-Chem 1 and was top 3 in my microbiology class. I have never come close to a B. Until this class. It is unrealistically too hard. I study about ridiculously hard for his test just to make high B’s. Steer FAR from this guy. Listen to me.
Such a nice man and willing to meet with you, but the worst course I have taken at Auburn. I rarely have time to study for my other classes as this class requires so much attention. I have a higher grade in Biochem if that says anything. Tests on very specific and little details. Save your GPA and time, mentally draining.
Dr. S is a good lecturer, but he makes this class very very very challenging. There is just way too much material and it is impossible to take when you have other courses to study for. Memorizing and understanding everything DOES NOT guarantee you a good grade. I have never done this poorly in a course before. Avoid if you can.
Dr. Seibenhener is a top tier lecturer and does an amazing job at explaining the complex topics that genetics encompasses. Genetics is undoubtedly a hard course, but Dr. Seibenhener makes it doable. This class requires lots of studying but it is worth it in the end. If you are looking for a fair and accessible professor then take Dr. Seibenhener.
One of my favorite professors so far! Tests are specific and there is a lot of material but it definitely is possible to get an A. He always made lectures interesting despite the class being at 8am. He cares about his students and is very accommodating if you need to make up an exam!
If you study hard and put in the effort, you'll do just fine. If you miss class, he posts supplemental readings to canvas that has everything you need to know in it. Memorize the details and never write anything off as unimportant and you'll do great. He's a very fair grader, even though his exams are hard. When he says he doesn't round he means it
Although Dr. S gets an extremely bad rap, he is one of the best professors I have taken at Auburn. Cell biology is a hard class overall and he does make the class difficult, but it is not to punish you. Dr. S truly wants you to learn and understand the material being taught. Some advice: go to the office hours and ask for help if you need it.
Dr. S is an amazing lecturer, no doubt about it, but his tests are borderline unfair. Definitely go to office hours, he is very helpful and gives tips for studying. Improved my test grade by like 30 points by going to see him. I would be afraid to take him for Cell Bio because of how hard Genetics was.
Worst class I have taken at Auburn. Do NOT take this class. Dr. S basically rambles the entire class time. You must come to class AND record the lecture or you WILL do poorly. Exams contain questions that are designed to trick you. For your reference, there were only 10 A's out of 84 students. This class is not worth your sanity.
This class was definitely hard but it is Genetics tbf. He is as fair as it gets, but don't expect free points thrown at you. There's 4 exams and the final which in total is about 80% of your grade. Don't miss a single lecture if you can, and have someone record it for you if you really have to. Tests are hard but are doable for sure if you study.
Dr. Seibenhener's class is no joke... it is extremely hard, and he is a tought professor. I learned more than I have ever learned with his class. He is very kind and will sit down and help you with anything you need, but his exams are SO HARD - I can't stress that enough. They are to this day the hardest exams I have ever taken. Hard hard class.
Dr. S is a great professor. His lectures are clear, concise, understandable, and well-paced. This class is tough and takes a lot of time studying and going to class, but Dr. S makes it interesting and very doable.
Very good teacher. This class is very difficult, but if you put in the work it will pay off The lectures are very clear, but there was a TON of information. Study a lot and do the practice problems a lot. He is very helpful in office hours and genuinely just a nice guy. Would highly recommend him, but just know you're going to have to work for an A
Dr. S is definitely my favorite professor at Auburn. That being said, his class is difficult and you will have to work for your grade. He is great at lecturing and makes an 8am class enjoyable. Although attendance isn't mandatory, you have to go to class to do good. Super kind and helpful in office hours. No extra credit or rounding up grades.
Genetics has been my favorite class at Auburn so far. It is so interesting, and Dr. S. does a great job explaining everything. However, you do need to study hard and memorize the slight details because the tests are difficult. They force you to think critically, which is great for people planning to take the MCAT.
Dr. S is such a great professor! He is a very caring prof and gives you what you need to succeed. Although attendance isn't required, it is necessary in order to get your desired grade. Tests are extremely detailed and you must know every detail on the slides and what he mentions in class. If you need clarification, go to his office hours!!!
Dr. S makes the lecture so interesting with the stories he tells. I learned a lot this semester. His unit tests are very difficult and detailed. I went from a 100 to 81 to 82 to 73. The final was more memorization based with 80 multiple choice questions. I needed to make a 98 on it to get an A, got a 90, but Dr. S rounded my overall grade to an A.
I passed both OChem 1 & 2 with an A+ and I currently have a D in this course. Attending every lecture, going to office hours, finding practice tests, and reading the textbook religiously still does not guarantee a good grade in this course. His tests are awful, they are not on the material learned in class and are conceptual. Best advice AVOID
Dr S is truly a great professor and lecturer! The tests are difficult but if you study a week in advance and record his lectures you will succeed in his class!
best lecturer I have ever had but I go to every class, study for hours a day days in advance for exams, go to his office hours and still get C's and B's on exams. I have made straight A's all of undergrad including ochem 1&2 and I'll be happy if I finish with a B. But I know other people who are succeeding just fine so it's different for everyone
Great lecturer but has a bit of an ego. Dumb questions do exist to him and he is kind of passive-aggressive when he answers them. Ultimately an interesting question, but tests are set up like the MCAT, and he does not give any extra credit or round grades. Be ready to put in the work.
Dr. S is a great teacher, but his tests are impossible. I knew all the material and never made above a 92. His tricky questions don't make sense, but I've heard the other professor is worse but they both are. He claims to prepare us for med school and we will either come back and "call him and a__hole or thank him." I know what I'll be doing.
Tests are Impossible, the material confusing, and office hours are a waste of time. This class is beyond useless and the tests are made specifically to trick you and make you miss easy points. The material and tests are completely different.
If anyone says this class or the exams are difficult they're lying. All you have to do is go to class and take notes and it's fine. Literally studied the night before every exam and made a B on every single one. If you studied for more than one night you'd prob make an A. Love this teacher and this class. Shout out Michael love you papi.
If you want to improve your critical thinking skills and tackle complex topics, take Dr. S. He goes beyond the surface level of the material and expects his students to have a thorough understanding of it. His tests are challenging but fair, and he genuinely cares about his students' success. Attend office hours early on if you need any help.
I learned more in a semester with Dr. S then I have in most of my time at Auburn. His lectures were very thorough, but he made them very interesting and applicable. His tests were extremely challenging, but not impossible. I would highly suggest going to office hours and building a relationship with him, as he truly cares about his students!
Dr. S is very nice and a great lecturer. Be aware you will really have to study and his tests are more difficult than his quizzes. The final was honestly the worst part for me because it is cumulative and that is why I got a B but if you really want to learn take him, but it is difficult. I also went to all his office hours
This professor means well but his tests are extremely hard and are not fair based on the course material. He asks questions that want you to read his mind when picking an answer. I do not recommend taking this teacher especially for cell bio and i do not recommend taking it online, it only made the course harder.
Dr. S is a tough professor, but he will mold you into a better student. You can't come into his classes and study like you did in HS and expect a good grade. I made A's in Orgo 1 and 2 and I struggled with Genetics. His tests are really tough and you really have to critically think especially for the last 3 exams in the class. Doesn't drop grades.
Really good professor overall. He seems to care a lot, and is willing to always discuss your grade or your state in his class. He is very tough, but you definitely learn a lot. I learned double what I learned in other classes if not triple or even quadruple.
Dr.S was amazing. He makes a difficult class interesting and easy to understand. He does packbacks and weekly quizzes that help your grade, but exams are worth a good chunk. If you study and go to class, you should be fine!
I think too many people focus on the grade they get. You will most likely get a B or C, so if your GPA is meh avoid him. He, however, makes you learn SO MUCH. He improved my biology MCAT section by 4 points. He writes great letters of rec. He curved me to an A since I went to office hours and whatnot (had a 88.7)
This guy should not have been allowed to teach an entry-level course. He includes so much extra information in the lectures that you don't find with any other BIOL1000 professor. Majority of it is unnecessary and does not apply whatsoever to anything on the test. Avoid at all costs for any entry-level biology.
Dr. S seems like a nice dude, but as a professor his class/tests are impossible to do well on.I have never made a C in my life but i'm gonna end his class with one. His lectures are fine, but he is never clear with exactly what is on his tests and doesn't give good guidance on what to study. Just avoid him if you can tbh. Save yourself the trouble
The tests are harder than MCAT questions I have been studying. They are unbelievably hard, even if you study for a week in advance you will still get a C on the tests. I have never studied so much for a class to continue bad grades on a test. I made an A in ochem 1 & 2 and am STRUGGLINg in this class. He tries to teach but it doesnt help for tests.
I loved Dr. S teaching style. I would recommend recording his lectures. His tests were difficult but all material on the test is covered in class. I spaced out my studying, starting at the first lecture and made A's on all his tests. I hear his office hours are good, although I never went. I recommend this class if you are willing to do the work.
I love Dr. S! His class taught me so much more than I've ever learned before. His tests are hard, but they adequately prepare you for pre-healthcare tests like the MCAT. He's super helpful in office hours and all around really passionate about the subject. Take Dr. S!
Dr. S was a great lecturer, he was engaging and made the materials very interesting. He likes putting some trick questions on the exams, but if you understand the material well, you will do well on them. His quizzes also help you prepare for the exams and show you what topics you need to study harder in.
This class is very test-heavy and his tests are tough. The material he teaches is hard to understand because all he does is read off of slides. All of the example problems he provided were so much easier than the ones that he put on the test. I worked hard in the class & never received above a 60 on any of the tests. I do not recommend taking him.
Dr. S is such an amazing professor. He ensures that all of his students understand the material and goes into great analogies to break down the content. His exams are very difficult and require extensive knowledge of the material, but he holds review sessions before all of the exams.
Dr. S seems like a good guy, as long as he isn't your genetics teacher. Dr. S's exams were very difficult and he structured them in a way that made them difficult to study for (asking lots about one topic but not another). He would also often ask trick questions. I really enjoy biology but he made it super stressful and much harder than needed.
DO NOT. Do not take him. Save your self the time and money and just take it online or at a community college. Cause Christ. Unless you are naturally smart and pick up on material quick with little to no studying please don't take him. The SI for his class didn't even do great in the class so that'll tell you something
just change majors, take elsewhere idk anything but him
Dr. S gets a lot of hate but he is an amazing professor. His class is challenging but you can do well. Studying daily is a must if you want to be successful, this is not a class you can cram for. He requires you to understand the material not just memorize it. Very interesting lectures, you can tell he loves genetics. Go to office hours!!!
just bad man
This course was far more difficult than other BIOL1000 profs. He is a great lecturer and knows his stuff, but be prepared to study hard. Tests are really difficult, there are trick questions but if you show up to class and take good notes you can make it through. SI was bad, go to office hours! He is willing to help his students if you ask for it
Dr. S is the best lecturer I have had at Auburn. He really makes the material engaging. His exams are difficult and push you, but if you record every lecture, take notes on each recording, and then study that you will be golden for each exam. First two exams are free response heaving, second 2 are all MC. Final is just broad concepts.
This class is hard. Tests are confusing and in depth in comparison to his slides which are usually very vague. I dont recommend taking this unless you have to.
A lot of Dr. S's reviews are unfair, as he is a great professor. Yes, Cell Bio is hard. But it is a senior-level course meant to be challenging so we can move forward successfully. He willingly meets outside of office hours, and he wants to work with you to do better. Keep up with notes after each lecture to not fall behind, and you will do well.
Genuinely my favorite professor I've had so far from my major-related classes. Lectures are super enjoyable and interesting, and he's great at explaining tricky concepts. I actually felt like I learned stuff in this class. His exams are difficult, but I did still manage to cram for all of them and finish with an A, though just barely.
Dr. S is a great professor. Everyone will tell you his class is impossible and you will likely be terrified going in but seriously just go to class, take good notes by keying in to where he is inexplicatley emphasizing where he's going to pull test questions from, and actually study enough and it will pay off. Put in the work and you will succeed.
he is an amazing lecturer but tests are insanely hard. you have to put in a lot of work for the class. only assignments you have are tests, packbacks and quizzes.
Oh my...where to start. I was SO frustrated with this course and Dr. S's way of teaching. I felt like I learned NOTHING. If you miss even one day, you fall behind. Don't expect to catch up using the powerpoints that he puts on Canvas--they're just pictures. Tests are unnecessarily difficult.
Yes, Dr. S makes his classes more difficult than necessary, but he's truly preparing you for the future. Go to his office hours, record his lectures, and study a lecture a day when you have a test coming up (don't cram). His classes are all about application. I've found that making up stories for diff processes helped me remember better
Exam and quiz questions were often unclear or poorly worded. Lectures were engaging and mostly clear. Allowed recording of lectures. Gave plenty of time for questions and review before exams.
Does let you audio record all the lectures and posts the lecture slides. He DOES NOT curve tests, give extra credit, or round up at the end of the semester to help you out at all. Tests are extremely hard and are nothing like the quizzes and if you do bad on those then you are screwed.
I truly do not think Dr. S is as hard as people say if you take this class seriously and attend lectures. I went into every exam feeling extremely well prepared. Know EVERY SINGLE THING he discusses in class and understand the processes. If you do that, you will be more than fine.
His exams do require great understanding and connection of material, but if you know how to study and prepare, his class is not bad. You must attend class daily as the exams are based off of his teaching and not what's in the slides. Amazing lectures, you can tell he cares and tries to make you enjoy the class.
This is my second time taking this class - I locked in work both times and am still ending with a D. I study everything from class to rewriting the slides and re-listening to the lectures but this class has kicked my butt twice now. He's a really nice guy, the lectures are great, but the exams are difficult and will ask on the most trivial things.
This class is a step up from his Genetics Class. Dr.S is great as usual. Review your exam after each test so you can learn from mistakes. Don't take this class if you do not have a good GPA, as you will likely get a letter grade lower than usual. Work hard, record lectures, think critically, and be ready to be challenged and to change how you think
TAKE THIS MAN, HE'S THE BEST! If you skip class, you will fail. Yes, his tests are super hard, but you will learn SO much. He wants you to succeed, you just have to be willing to put in the work (and yes, it's a lot of work). You learn so many interesting things, and with hard work, an A is def possible!
Dr S' genetics class is challenging, but do-able. His lectures are usually interesting and well delivered, and he uses slideshows during the lectures that he posts to canvas ahead of time. The exams are more application based and require you to conceptualize the material, not just memorize it and he holds a review session before every exam.
Dr. S is hard but manageable. I truly did not know how to study before I took his class. I didn't do well on the first test, but after seeing the type of questions on that test I did well on the other 3 and the final. Most of the questions are application so you have to actually know the material well. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you need to go
This is the first class I feel like I truly retained the information. If you skip class there is a high probability that you will not pass the class. Dr. S is a very nice professor I went to his office hours several times and he was always willing to help. If you don't underestimate this class going in you will be ok.
IDC what anyone says I love this guy and you can tell he puts a lot of thought into his lectures and knows a lot of stuff. He can answer any question and somehow perfectly transition it into his next talking point. his lectures also always perfectly fit time its incredible just use email, office hrs etc and u will be fine
Loved Dr. S lectures. He really knows and loves the subject which reflects in his lectures and teaching. Everything on tests are talked about in lectures so you have to show up, and I would recommend recording lectures. I studied material weeks before the exam and made A's on all his tests. Would recommend if your willing to put in the work.
If you dont have a religion, get one a pray. Satanism may help since his class is hell on earth.
he is by far my favorite professor, and genetics has been the best class that I have ever taken at Auburn. it is really not a hard class, lets you record lectures, and I always studied one or two nights before and made an A or B. he does ask a lot of application questions on tests but they aren't that bad if you actually understand the material.
I did not like Dr. S. He seems to see very highly of himself, and makes the tests very hard. Knowing the content isn't enough to get an A. He tries to be tricky (when he says he doesn't), it's frustrating. The content is interesting, but I would've rather have taken this course with someone else.
Seems like a nice guy and has good intentions but makes his class way harder than it needs to be. Only practice he gives are quizzes and they are still nothing like the tests. Powerpoints dont help much will probably have to watch online videos to learn it. He cares about genetics and wants you to learn it but screw him tbh. Unnecessary.
This man is evil. He makes the class so difficult, and literally for what? I would sometimes skip out of pure anxiety. If the other guy is an option, TAKE HIM. If literally anyone else is an option, take them.
Dr. S's lectures are very interesting and it is obvious he is very knowledgeable about the subject. Tests are application based. Attendance is not mandatory, but he explains the topics well in class and it helps with understanding for the test. Also recommend going to his office hours. Very interesting class, but most challenging so far!
This class is hard but if you put in the work you will succeed. Go to every lecture, record the lecture, take notes, and then listen back to the lecture again following the slideshow. He is very entertaining and great at explaining stuff. The exams are difficult but you can definitely make A's on all of them. Overall a great guy.
Dr S is a wonderful guy, his first 2 exams will string you by your feet and eat you. The next exams are MS and fairly straightforward. Do not underestimate his class, it is difficult, and you NEED to put effort in to succeed. This is not an easy A. Study, ask questions, record lectures, go to office hours, and prioritize studying weeks in advance!
He is ok! Lectures are pretty good and entertaining, but you can tell he just uses his same old slides. He is nice but brutal with grades. He did round my 88.8 to an A, though, so I am very thankful for that. I regularly attended office hours and sat in the front row. I lowkey thought that the last 2 exams were way harder than the first two.
