If you don't understand the material from the beginning, either get serious tutoring, or drop the class because it doesn't get any easier.
too many students dropped this class. he was very confusing and didn't answer your questions or teach you anything about the material. he had a bad attitude about teaching and was very unprofessional. don't take his class!!! or you will be doomed in math!
I've taken a year of calculus before and still am doing terrible in this class. He doesn't know how to explain things in class. His tests are impossible, class average is always under 50% Definitely not recommended.
i've had 2 years of calc in high school, and i'm still struggling in here. i don't think it's a hard class but he is very unprofessional and not enthusiastic. take the class, but with a different teacher.
Just don't take him...you'll regret it.

I had calc in high school and I'm squeaking by with a B. He's a complete scrub, I dread going to his class, I'm lost all the time and so is the rest of the class (well, the few of us that didn't drop it). AVOID IF POSSIBLE!
Tests are extremely difficult, however, there is always a very generous curve "30% was a C." He is very willing to help anytime you ask, although a little unclear. Keep up w/ hmwk, study, and a C is attainable. If you want a B or A, get a dif
Check out comments from his old job at UW-L
Willing to help if you're willing to work. Definitely can't just memorize stuff, though.
I literally counted down the days til this class was over...impossibly hard exams and didn't explain things very clearly. I went to tutoring 3 times a week & office hours once a week, and still had trouble..drop, or be prepared to fail w/out a tutor!!
Seems nice enough, but tests are ****ing hard. I couldn't go to office hours, but he set up outside appointments.
I did pretty well in calc in high school but this class really smacked me at first. It sure isn't what I was used to, but once I figured that out it was ok. Takes a lot of time, though. Office hours hlped.
Incredibly hard, but a generous grading system. He said whent the class started that you would have to work 4 hours a day in addition to class to pull an A.
I coasted through calc in hs but really had to work in here. My other classes seem a lot easier now, though.

This class was EXTREMELY hard...I hated calc and was forced to drop it :(
Not only is he a terrible teacher in the sense that he can't teach for crap, but he is a jerk on top of it, and likes to make his students feel dumb and inferior. There is a reason why he only has about 5 kids in his class every semester.
expects you to read the book. likes to answer questions though. tests seem pretty tough but then he goes over them.
This class was the worst class experience of my life. He did NOT teach. He just sat in his chair, while we presented solutions to problems off a websight which had no GUIDANCE on. 11 remained. You'll set urself up to FAIL if u take this class w/ him!!
Lang is the worst math teacher I have ever had. If I wanted to teach myself math I would have saved myself the 2 grand I paid to take his class. Claims its your own fault if you don't learn anything, you should have just tried harder. I say...
I say if he wants anyone to learn he should get off his ass and teach. If you take his class, you just better hope the rest of your classmates are geniuses cuz the students are responsible for teaching each other. Take my advice and DROP THIS CLASS
Now this class was just horrible!!! I you really want to learn and get a good grade when you do your home work, dont take this class... just a waste of time
This is the worst professor that I have ever had. He does not teach you and I dont know how you are expected to learn when you are told to read the book and class is for if we have questions. This is college I am not paying all this money to teach myself.
He sucked. Didn't teach anything at all ever, need I say anymore??
Definitely an unusual style. I liked it, though. I think this class will help me longer than most of my others. If you get stuck, go to office hours.
This class was cool.
Pretty tough class, but the teacher's nice. Go to office hours.
Worst class I have ever taken..
The material sucks, but the teacher tries to make it interesting.
A lot of fun.
If you're willing to work hard and go in for help when you need it, this is a great class.
I thought he was great.
Dont take this professor for 223! He does not teach you anything, it is just read the book and ask questions. That is nice, if he finishes the questions without the "o well you can do it from here". Taught sections in like 5 minutes and then told you to read the book. Also needs to wear longer shorts.
Not what I was expecting.
Yeah so even though this class was basic math it was not math. It was logic and I had so much trouble and Dr. Lang couldn't take like 5 minutes after class to explain something to me. The quizzes are stupid and tests are stupid, they don't cover the material. He tells you to figure stuff out yourself. Don't take him.
OMG, he expects you to read. What a ****! Come on, this is college! Anyone who thinks he won't help you hasn't asked. Yeah, he asks you to do a lot of work, but he wants you to do well.
He really tries to make you think. AFAIC, that's a good thing.
This class could have been a lot easier if I took it with another teacher. He was very unclaer when it came to his lecture and his exams were far too hard. But there is a very good curve so I was able to get a B.
i understood the material, but when it came time to take the tests...not a clue.
Very helpful, explains problems in detail, easy curve. Watch out, tests can have easy problems throughout, so look at them all first. Quizzes are directrly from the hw.
This is not what I would consider to be math. I basically failed all of the quizes and didn't get above a 60 on any of the tests, but passed with a B. The final was exactly what he had covered in class, so if you went to class you did ok Wouldn't recommend him but he's better that a lot of the math profs at Bradley. Transfer in math if possible.
way too hard, find someone else! The whole bradley math department is bad, i know, but this guy takes the cake
He teaches well, but his tests are that much harder. I wouldn't recommend him, as his tests are ridiculous, and the curve is big, but not big enough. A shame, because he's a nice guy and everything, but his exams make his class not worth taking.
Class is impossibly hard Tries to force you to really understand the process of what is going on, I never could. Tries to make things look easier than they are. Is helpful when asked but his big schtick is "solving problems you haven't seen before" which means your screwed on the tests. Prepare to be satisfied with a 50.
I learned way more in this class than the other math classes I've taken.

Worst teacher ever. I love math and have a fairly strong background in it but I didn't learn a thing. I had to teach myself. Tests are hard but have big curves but still impossible to get an A. webassigns twice a week and quizes every friday.
He didnt explain anything for an average student to understand. Being an engineering study I like math but he made me dread class. I never missed a class and did all the homework but had to settle for a D in the class. He also has webassign due like every other day. AVOID!
The dude is insane. I'm very good at math, and this guy had me completly lost the whole time. He assigns homework problems from the book, but none of them are on the test. He makes the tests impossible, and then curves them. its impossible to get anything above a C in that class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Extremely tough, but willing to spend a lot of time helping you understand. Really wants you to think hard.
Nice guy but impossible class, he will help you out if you go and see him but even then the next day you wont understand. We started with a full class of maybe 30 and ended with maybe 13 and many of them with poor scores. Just drop it and be safe.
Lang, knows he's stuff, he's just not that great at teaching it. Test & Quizzes are very difficult. To even start a problem you have to decipher what the hell its asking you. If you put in a bunch of effort expect about a C, unless your a math wiz.
he is absolutely terrible! DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE
I absolutely loved calc in high school and got a 4 on the AP AB test. Dr. Lang was quite impossible. I ended up dropping the class after the first exam. I understood everything he was talking about, but he grades so harshly that it's impossible to get an A.
He cannot teach concepts. I am a 4.0 student and tried to get help several times but he doesn't bother to keep any office hours or appointments made with students. The web homework NEVER works and nothing is done even though there are numerous complaints by several students just in MY class. He is totally unreasonable and a waste of college time.
Can't teach a thing!!!! But I am in love with his Hippieness!!!!
DO NOT TAKE he moves so fast and there is so much work due almost everyday ( out of the 4 days you have class )
This guy is a genius. His approach to calc is very interesting and IF you can understand it then you will be set for the real world. Webassign is hard and his exams and quizes are impossible. There is a curve which helps, but he is a genius so the average student will not be able to follow his logic. I suggest you take a different professor
Lang is one of those people that understands the concepts so well that it is impossible for him to convey it clearly. His tests are impossible to finish in 50 minutes. Unless you are a Calculus genius I would recommend taking a different teacher.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! never is in office hours and doesnt respond to emails, tests and quizzes are impossible, and he can NOT teach. He makes you feel inferior because you are not as smart as him and he is one of the laziest professors at Bradley
Okay this teacher is the worst teacher at all of Bradley. You will sit in class and be confused everyday. You will learn how to teach yourself which is not why he gets a salary. Only nerds do well in this class. There are tutors that teach this class way better then him.
He is a terrible teacher. I am usually good at Math and he does not know how to dumb it down. He is way too smart for any college student. Do NOT take this class you will regret it. No one gets an A. If you work super hard you might not even get a C and you have to teach yourself everything.
Too smart to teach beginning calculus classes. Tests impossible, quizzes even more impossible. His curves allow most to get a C but good luck on an A.
Lang has very, very high standards. Even if you are great at math, you will struggle in this class. He does not care if anybody passes his class or not. He will not just give you a grade for free. He is super intelligent though.
If you have not taken calculus before, do not expect to do well in this class. He assumes that you know everything he does and will not stop to ask if anyone does not understand. Online assignments and book work every other night and the pace of the class is pretty fast. Overall very smart at math but a terrible intro teacher
He's a cool teacher. But makes the class really hard. Do the homework and reading, you'll be safe. His quizzes on Fridays are short but hard.
Worse professor ever. Grades are determined on quizzes and exams. He doesn't give you any points for the homework he assigns. The quizzes are difficult because he changes words around. He intentionally assigns things when someone is not in class. Take a math class with someone else. You'll get a better grade and actually learn something.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! If you have not taken a calculus course or you cannot teach yourself calculus you will do poorly in this class. He does not teach and expects you to teach yourself and ask him questions on things you could not teach yourself. The quizzes are the hardest problems possible for each section and the exams are even harder.
He's a chill person, but when it comes to math nothing made sense. I understood he wanted us to think, but most of the times he avoided the answers. He basically teaches you how to gamble. This was not basic math nor was it ever/will ever be useful
he is chill but not very helpful. he talks down to his students.
Dr. Lang is the most disrespectful condescending person I have ever come into contact with. He talks down to you and makes you feel inferior. He left me waiting once for an hour during office hours and never came back. AVOID AT ALL COST. I am a straight A student and got a C which killed my GPA. You have to teach yourself because he is useless.
Very bad teacher. Doesn't teach at all and thinks he's better than you.
Awful teacher. He isn't organized and his lectures make no sense. He rambles on one question for the entire class. He is cocky and isn't helpful. He doesn't prepare you well for the test and quizzes which are cumulative over the whole semester and if you ask him what to study he says everything. This isn't real math. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!
He's a smart guy, and talking to him outside of class helps for understanding the material. Make sure to read and look at practice problems, because he gives quizzes at random that can be over anything from a section. His tests can also be ridiculously hard.
OMG!!!! This professor is beyond insane. Second day of class we had a quiz. Skipped an entire section assuming it was taught before--it wasn't!! Then assigns us problems that are impossible to complete! How can a person like him be allowed to teach and make it impossible--no matter how hard you try or innate abilities--to achieve an A, let alonea B
Do not expect to pass this class unless you know "everything." Most of my classmates are failing. Curves grades but tests are a nightmare. Don't expect the textbook to be useful - Wikipedia is a better source than Dossey. Homework isn't graded, which doesn't help. He's a great guy and I like his personality, but he's way too smart for intro work.
He is a very rough teacher and I've heard that the class isn't as tough if you have another teacher. I would recommend another teacher if you could get one
This was a bittersweet experience for me. I start the class, everything makes sense. Get to the first test, and EVERYTHING ON THE TEST WAS HARDER THAN ANYTHING DISCUSSED IN CLASS. Morale is low now. I go to office hours, which were very rewarding, Lang is very helpful and super nice. Problem is his tests. Would never recommend due to the tests.
Tough teacher. Be prepared for random quizzes and tests that have nothing to do with what is being taught.
Not a good teacher
Sucks
To be fair, Michael Lang is a funny person and is blunt. I hated math(still do) but he made it worse. He would not go over concepts in a simplified version before going straight to the hard type. He purposely made hard questions on the tests. I hated having him as a teacher. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
He's a really nice guy but his teaching methods are a little hard to follow. If you go to his office hours then he usually explains it much better and in a way you can understand.
2nd time taking calc 2, 1st with Dr. Lang. Used Webassign for homework. Fast-paced class imo, but he readily replied to questions in & out of class & would extend homework due dates within reason if requested. Tests were tough, but fair - I should've studied more. Quizzes were almost daily, but combine into specific % of final grade.
Tests are very difficult. Pop quizzes are usually one question and are random. He uses harsh language in class that is often uncomfortable. Very unique fella... Obviously a genius with differential equations but wasn't great at teaching it. If I could do it over I would avoid Bradley's entire math department and take math somewhere else.
Class is intense, fast, and engaging. Lang teaches this class from a desk with the rest of us and we all just talk and do problems. If you are a math major or computer science, take this class with Dr. Lang and you will have an even greater appreciation for mathematics. Come prepared, he won't make you feel like bad but your grade will be.
He is absolutely terrible. He comes to class bare foot and say to the class "lets explore". No teach us what we need to know. No calculator, no formula sheet, no curve. Tests are impossible and pop quizzes are stupid. The hardest thing i have ever taken. He is so bad. Stay clear.
He is incredibly vague when you ask him questions inside and outside of class. The grade that I got did not fairly represent the amount of work that I put in. There is an insane amount of content to cover, that it is difficult to know how to study for the exams. The online homework helps grasp concepts. Read the book, and do practice problems.
It really seems like he doesn't care about the students at all. He's more concerned with making his job easier and may honestly be the worst teacher I've had in my scholastic career thus far. Last semester, I had a teacher who stopped teaching when online classes start, and just told us when the exams were, and I'd rather have him again. Terrible.
He is a VERY strict grader. Make sure to remember your periods and the life lessons EXACTLY as they are written. He assigns quizzes every Friday and utilizes Respondus. The class was confusing and if it wasnt for the group chat I would have failed. Nothing makes sense. Its not even a math class. He doesnt care if you email him for help etc...
Everyday you would have a pop quiz on stuff you never understand yet. If you are really good at teaching yourself then go for him. Homework and assignments are never graded so I never know what i did wrong! Sometimes go off topic and history of math. grades consist of pop quizzes and exams. Keeps on using Respondus even tho its broken!!! Worst ever
If you take his class for math 101, make sure you do the problems in the textbook. Sometimes he does pull questions right from them on the exams. I went to his office hours, and hell go through and truly does work out the problems with you. His tests are hard, but he does offer extra credit. Pay attention to lectures WITH FULL DETAIL. BE PRECISE.
Dr. Lang's lectures weren't organized and it was very hard to follow along. He would go on tangents all the time and never greatly answered student's questions. The quizzes will kill your grade due to how short they are. If you get a question wrong, you're already at a B on the quiz. He was also awful at responding to emails and passive aggressive,
Worst professor Ive ever had. Rambling lectures with no textbook guided presentation or anything. He did nothing but talk loosely about topics in the class. Had his own ways for math problems and then taught it horribly. Quizzes at the start of every class on stuff he hasn't taught and you don't understand yet. Super harsh grader too.
I like Dr. Lang as a person quite a lot. He is insanely knowledgeable and that can be a good and a bad thing. This course really felt like a 300+ level math course as far as difficulty and the 100 level label is very deceptive. He's actually pretty fair as a teacher and some of the earlier reviews here a misleading and inaccurate.
Quizzes every class (until someone complained) and he made us use a broken spyware application to make sure we weren't cheating, but all it did was screw over all his students because it barely functioned. Insisted it wasn't his fault, and that he couldn't do anything, but it was more like he didn't care enough to try. Worst prof I've ever had.
Seems like a nice guy, but he's really scattered. His lectures are less to teach and more to vaguely supplement the learning you've done on your own and through the textbook. I've taken the equivalent of this class before (& got an A) and still too often ended this class wondering what on earth just happened. His style's not for everyone.
This was absolutely my worst experience with any class. Ive gotten an A in every math class before this class. He makes you learn the material with no notes and you have to recreate the formulas. If it at all possible DO NOT TAKE WITH HIM
Honestly, lecture was optional as long as you put in the work outside of class. I found it more helpful to skip lecture and learn on my own than to go to class and watch example problems. Lecture was mainly used for examples and questions, not teaching any new material. Use your textbook!!!
Dr Lang is extremely knowledgable in this field, as he explains the material very well. However, his lectures seemed to be very unorganized and spontaneous. I was never really sure what would be on the tests. We have homework graded for correctness every night. I recommend a Chegg membership so you can use their textbook solutions.
His tests are curved, which are helpful. But they are slightly more difficult than other teacher's Calc III tests. Lectures are a little scattered but it's not a bad thing because the lectures are often guided by the students. He uses our ideas and asks a lot of questions to help to be engaging.
not a good professor. never take a class from him, it's for your own good.
Dr. Lang is a cool and funny guy, but his teaching methods simply don't do it for me. You will learn very little from attending the class, so if you take him you better be prepared to learn on your own. He has daily quizzes that are for a grade, that often take place before you have gotten the chance to fully understand the subject.
I won't question Lang's intelligence but his "teaching" makes the student's job way harder. You will need to teach yourself the material (which isn't that bad), and prepare to be assigned pop quizzes over Canvas on days you don't have his class. He's a good guy, and he's super smart, but you will need to break a sweat to keep up with his pace.
Dr Lang is smart, but his lectures were hard to understand and follow. You'll be on your own for learning most of the material. He goes over some examples in class, but they're based on what students ask. If you aren't familiar with the course material already it will be difficult to learn. Avoid taking him if possible.
First off he is extremely smart and knowledgeable in his field. However, that field does not include how to explain complicated math subjects to someone learning it for the first time. His lectures mostly consisted of example problems we would ask him to go over, but, he would not explain them very well. You'll have to teach yourself everything.
Had to drop the class after learning he does quizzes every single day. He recently has been doing online quizzes even on the only day we don't have calculus 4/5 days. He is also very harsh on grading, partial credit seems impossible to get.
The man knows his stuff about the subject however he is not a good teacher. You'll mostly be teaching yourself calculus. There are quizzes everyday. Even the one day you don't have class. There is also a significant amount of homework every week. Never answered my emails. Barely gives partial credit. Smart man, bad professor. Do not take his class.
beware
Wasn't helpful to students Doesn't explain the material well
Didn't offer extra credit. Wish he would have structured the homework's and exam's differently or done a project instead of final cumulative exam.
Took this course for gen ed but ended up withdrawing because of the zero chance I could have passed this class. The tests were beyond heavy and had no leniency. As a professor, he lectures but is very difficult to take notes as he somewhat just talks but doesn't say anything truly important to the lesson. Do not take this course or this professor.
Dr. Lang is brilliant but his teaching style doesn't click for everyone. Lots of daily quizzes and homework, so be prepared to teach yourself calculus using the textbook and resources like unstuckstudy. Worth a try if you're a self-motivated learner.
NO, never take his class. HE is awful.
Tests are most of the grade. Homework is 5%. You rely on the test curves. He expects you to fully understand the concepts in 1 semester at the level of math he is in. He is a smart guy, but he struggles to understand what its like to not get it.
Dr. Lang believes in challenging students even if it means failing them. If you're ready to pour your life into a class to pass take Dr. Lang. If you genuinely go to office hours and try to understand you will learn and if that's what you're looking for, go for it. If you're worried abt your GPA don't take Dr Lang if you can help it
Dr. Lang's teaching style is toss concepts at the students and watch gleefully as they try to figure them out. He is accessible outside of class and generally helpful, but believes in making his course hard above anything. He gatekept our cumulative grade; you had to ask him directly for your standing. Did I get better at math? Yes. But it hurt.
Dr. Lang - quite the math professor. Very knowledgeable. BUT he has a difficult time "dumbing down" the material. Those who take him: you need to practice a lot, you need to follow his suggestions (don't procrastinate), practice memorization often, reach out when needed. DONT GET BEHIND! DO WHAT YOU NEED TO, and you WILL pass -BECAUSE you earned it
Dr Lang is a very difficult professor. That being said, he is extremaly intelegent and obviously knows what he is talking about. If you go to office hours, and/or build a bit of a relationship with him in class you will pass. You need to put in a lot of work yourself as he does not explain things super clearly. His random jokes in class were nice.
This dude will refer to every chapter of the entire book and expect you to have every chapter memorized by topic. He does not curve his tests and makes his exams much harder than they need to be. Be prepared to use stuff from calc 2 on every exam that you haven't looked at in months btw.
