SO well organized it's a little scary. A nice guy with a sorta Steve Carell-type delivery. His emphasis on economic trends and taxation isn't too interesting, but the rest of the course is great.
Lanthier is a nice enough guy, but the style of his lectures didn't seem appropriate for fourth year history...there was no participation or discussion, and he just presented one very shallow understanding of French history. If I wanted a textbook version, I would read a textbook (which all his assigned readings were), not pay for a class.
Dr. Lanthier's lectures were interesting enough but the assignments had little to do with the lecture information. We did two book reviews (which he didn't discuss in class at all), a midterm, a paper and a final. The midterm and final were on two books each that he didn't discuss and we were just expected to understand them by ourselves. Fairly ha
Lectures were kind of dry even tho he's a good speaker. kind of a sarcastic guy when you try to talk to him, but super-understanding and nice when I was having problems
lots of papers based on books that we didn't talk about in class, no discussion aspect, lectures were like reading from a textbook. was an ok class.
a little pompus, kinda like Fraser Crane, but super-clear and pretty interesting. lots of reading to do, but exams werent too tough
Basically a cross between Nicolas cage and Steve Carell. Lectures are kind of boring but the tests are easy enough.
His lectures were clear and concise, but his expectations for the paper were unclear. Perhaps, this was due to the fact that we wrote on books that we never once discussed in class. The average for this class our class was a 69, but if all you do is quote in your papers you're guaranteed a B.
Scrolled through previous ratings, and literally rolled off my seat at the "Steve Carell" comments. That's exactly how he lectures; speaking every ----- word carefully, with weird little pauses. Overall, his lectures are clear, and midterm+final was 2 essays each, one on course material, and one on a book per term. Easy stuff, really.
he literally repeats the text book but speaks clearly and pauses for people typing to catch up. *important note* if he get rebuffed by him ASK AGAIN he will answer 2nd time usually very ernestly and in detail ---at least GOOGLE the readings so you can get the theme, otherwise you will be screwed for tests =)
Great professor, clear in what he wants. attend class and read notes for exams. 1paper 1book review and final. lectures clearly, nice guy, sometimes sarcastic but helpful. gives out assignments criteria early in year!
This guy teaches at SFU, UBC and Kwantlen. Now I know why he doesnt have tenure at any of these school. End of story!
I will be honest- This man is hilarious, you only do three assignments for the entire year, and he was more than fair marking wise. It was not a difficult class. The midterm and final are basically the same format and if you miss a couple lectures you can read about the topics in the textbook.
Ups and downs. I had him in the morning so I was falling asleep the entire time but he did not make any effort to make the class entertaining. Don't go to this class looking for an easy grade, his marking expectations are unclear and often marks very hard and difficult and you don't know why.
He is an engaging lecturer who blends lectures with videos & discussions. We only had one final exam as 100% assessment in the summer class, which required comprehensive and systematic studying that focused on the themes/thesis. He was clear on his expectations. The downside is he does not spell names on board, but he would verbally upon request.
Lanthier seemed pretty intimidating at first, and he's not talkative about anything but history, but if you're talking about the course, he's really willing to talk, and he can be super helpful if you go to him. Never uses the text in class, but it WILL be on the final exam.
Horrible. He is really just the worst professor I've ever taken. He is awful at giving lectures and shouldn't be teaching!
Great Prof! I had NO interest in this topic at the beginning but he made it really interesting - highly recommend him
Don't make the mistake of taking a class with this professor. His marking is arbitrary, and he does NOT care about his students. No one in our class received an A(85-89%) - as seen on UBC grades distribution.
Great prof. and lecturer. Makes difficult material easy. Very helpful.
absolutely hate this prof. too strict. too hard marker. grading scheme is not understandable since he makes very very very little comments on essays. bad.
Very good prof who made the material interesting. I did OK in the class and know I could have done better...I was just too busy with other stuff :) I don't know what the people below are taking about, Prof Lanthier wrote a lot of commons on my papers and it was pretty obvious to me why I got the mark I did.
One of the best profs I've had in my 3 years at UBC. Maybe talks about political history a little too much in lectures and not everybody will love that. But the material is almost always interesting and thought-provoking. Highly recommended!
Well organized and a decent lecturer. Has a top-down, political approach to British history so, in my view, not the most interesting aspect to focus on. At the start, said he'd try to keep his lecture 2.5 hours, but usually ends up going longer, so it's tough staying engaged. It wouldn't be a problem if he gave more frequent but shorter breaks.
Having to take a summer course is always pretty awful, but Dr. Lanthier's class was excellent. He broke up the long lectures with videos, and this wasn't just a cheap gimmick since they helped us understand what was going on inBritain at the time. Really well organized and clear lectures. Dr. Lanthier was also really quick to answer questions.
Lanthier is a fair professor. His enthusiasm is excellent. His clarity is superb! It was a very interesting class! I think he needs to use a microphone. I can barely hear him. He's a tough professor, but very fair. He is a great teacher, so I think you should consider taking him.
Feedback was basically non-existent. Not a clear lecturer. Thought he was hilarious; he isn't. Smart class, solid discussion. Class average was literally 63%. If you can, AVOID this Professor.
Clear and knowledgeable lecturer however discussions were very awkward. The lectures were long and boring at times. He is a very hard marker and does not provide good feedback on papers.
In this seminar course, Lanthier actually made the diplomatic history of WW1 interesting. He's pretty understanding, though he sticks to the rules he's laid out so alert him if you are going to miss the discussion. He is a strict marker though. Can be a bit snarky, but in a humorous fashion.
I hated History in high school, but Dr. Lanthier made it interesting at the uni level! His lectures are a little too long, but he's really interesting and he'll help you a lot if you see him during office hours. Exams maybe seem tough, but are actually kind of easy if you read the book. Funny guy, but dry sense of humour not for everyone.
Nice guy, very egalitarian regarding rules, participation, etc. Dry sense of humor. Easily accessible with office hours and email, pretty prompt about returning assignments. Lectures are kind of dry and approx. 200 pages of reading a week. Pay attention in class, keep up with readings and it's really not a hard class to pass. Weekly quizzes.
There IS a lot of reading, but the exams and the assignments are actually pretty easy. Some of his lectures are a bit boring, but he's usually high-energy and talks about really interesting stuff that makes a pretty dull course come to life.
The course itself was very challenging but not in a way where I felt too much was being asked of me. He's a really nice and understanding professor who is always prepared to talk or to help, but you have to be reasonable and honest. As far as the course goes; you get out what you put in. Don't expect to not work all semester and then pull an A.
Dr. Lanthier is an enthusiastic prof with a good sense of humour. You can expect upwards up to 200 pages of reading a week in this class, but Dr. Lanthier does try his best to make sure everything's as clear as possible. He also gives excellent feedback for assignments.
A good prof who gives good lectures. Summer courses are always a grind, but this one wasn't so bad. I don't know if he's like this all the time, but Mr. Lanthier sure marked easy in this course. Just do the readings and you'll get a good mark unless you've got brain damage. He's got a dry sense of humour that not everybody is going to love.
I gave this guy a so-so review a couple of years after taking his class, but I've changed my mind about him. I was first-year at the time, and now that I've taken more classes I can see that he's actually really good at his job and interested in helping students. A LOT of UBC profs just don't care, but he does. My bad, Dr. L!
Doctor Lanthier very good professor. Very clear, and very easy to understand during lecture. Not much writing to do in this course, and not too much reading also. He also nicely help me understand how to write History essay.
Pretty cool summer class. This was 6 credits in four months, so the class was 2x a week for 3 hours, which kind of blew. But Doctor Lanthier made this tough routine OK with some good lectures and discussions. I didn't think the books he used were great, but at least there wasn't much writing. Would take this prof again.
This was a great class: I took because it was the only thing still open during that time-slot, but I ended up enjoying it and getting a lot out of the lectures, discussion, and readings. This course might have made me become a History major If I wasn't so close to graduating!
Good guy, likes to talk to the students and help them (just go see him during his office hours). Good lectures, but he likes politics a LOT. Does all sorts of things to keep the students engaged. Good atmosphere in the class, with everybody (almost) feeling involved and respected. Much better experience than average UBC History class.
Nice guy, gives really interesting lectures, and marks pretty fairly. I appreciated the course a lot more the year after I took it, because a lot of what we covered was relevant to a bunch of courses I was taking: I felt like I really got my money's worth. Lots of reading, and it helps if you already know how to write History essays!
This guy loves history, and he wants you to love it too! A real academic "nerd", but because he's got passion for what he teaches and the ability to relate the past to the present, he might make you into a believer too!
Really passionate about his stuff, overall a nice guy, but quite boring and unimaginative. Gives really standard assignments (paper and book review), no lecture notes. Only take his courses if you truly enjoy the topic, as he doesn't inspire you to like it if you don't. Not too harsh with papers, but a lot of readings.
This course was a lot better than I thought it would be: the discussions related the material to some real-world problems of today, so this wasn't just irrelevant stuff from a long time ago. Class readings were sometimes challenging, but Prof. Lanthier cleared that up and made the course come to life.
This class was very illuminating and made me question a lot of the things I thought I knew about Nazi Germany, and about human beings in general. Dr. Lanthier challenged us in a way that I haven't experienced often at UBC. Really, really good stuff. The reading material was stimulating without being too demanding.
Lanthier is a real solid history prof. Puts a heavy emphasis on writing and participation was expected after every lecture. He was friendly and helpful, super understanding whenever difficulties arose. His lectures aren't super detailed, but more of a primer for students to do deeper research into whatever facet of German history interested them.
I took this as an elective and because it fit my schedule (just being honest!), but I enjoyed a lot more than I thought it would. The books we had to read were challenging, but the prof broke them down in a really helpful way, and everything eventually became super clear. If you do the reading and talk in the "tutorials", you'll do fine.
This was a summer course, so there was less writing required than doing the normal school year. We still had to read a lot, though. If you're willing to do that, you'll get a good mark. Professor Lanthier obviously love-love-loves this time period, and loves talking about it. But he's really interesting and interacts with the students a lot.
amazing prof. lectures are very interesting. makes you fall in love with history.
Prof. Lanthier rules! He is engaging, thoughtful, and throughout in his lectures. His readings are often heavy but are rarely uninteresting or irrelevant. Would highly recommend him to anyone with an interest in history, you won't regret it!
Great prof. Some of his assignments are kind of old-school, but they're also easy enough if you're willing to put a little bit of work into them. Doctor Lanthier obviously cares about History, and about his students. Very interactive in his lectures (almost too much!), and has good discussion sections even in what should be lecture courses.
He was simply great. Such an inspirational professor for me. His feedbacks were quite understandable and made me improve myself. He cares about his students. I definitely recommend him if you love history.
An excellent, thoughtful, innovative instructor. As other people here have said, he cares passionately about History and about his students. Professor Lanthier does sometimes get a little abstract and super-academic, but not nearly as much as most instructors I've had. He keeps things interesting and grounded and reality. A fair bit of reading.
Took this as an elective because it fit my schedule, but really enjoyed the experience. Prof was helpful and friendly, but also entertaining during the lectures. There was a lot of reading and one of the books was kind of a slog, but the take-home exam made up for that.
A great class taught by somebody who knows what he's talking about. He's not going to give you PowerPoint slides with all the exam answers on them, and he IS going to tell you again and again (and again) that History and life are really complicated. Good stuff for somebody who doesn't just want to memorize facts.
Much better than some of the other History classes I've taken at UBC. The prof has an interesting way of presenting the material, and he goes way beyond the kind of stuff you were probably taught in high school. You have to do a pretty decent amount of reading, and you've GOT to talk in the small-group discussions, but getting a good mark is easy.
His lectures might not be for everybody, because he tends to assume people have done the readings and then talks about theoretical, abstract stuff. I LIKE that kind of thing, but I can see how not everyone would. Dr. Lanthier really shines when running tutorials and seminars, letting students run the show while still keeping them on track.
An excellent prof who makes everything very clear and gives you nice, logically-organized slides to help with the reading material (which I found challenging, even if it was really interesting). Uses tutorial-like discussion groups even in lecture classes, which I think is awesome, even if you miss out on an hour of class every week. Good stuff.
Professor Lanthier is a fantastic lecturer. He's always able to answer any questions asked, and covers so many topics every day. His assignments and rubrics/instructions are clear and easy to follow.
I love European history and the World Wars, and this course really delivered. Doctor Lanthier looked at the period through a very different lens, and he went a lot further and deeper than the standard high school account of the period. An engaging lecturer and helpful prof, would totally take a course with him again.
I think Prof Lanthier would be great for an upper year course, but not for an intro. His lectures are dense and often dull/slow, despite how smart and passionate he is about the subject. He is also crazy disorganized, which makes it hard to know what's going on in class. You get little feedback, so it's hard to know if you're on the right track.
Dr. Lanthier is a passionate and inspirational lecturer. Considering how long the class is (I took the 2-hour class) and he gives no breaks, it very hard to not fall asleep. There's only a few major things you are graded by. For the midterm/final, we had to right 2/3 essays which were graded by TA that messed up a lot of people's grades.
Great, engaging prof who obviously loves history. His lectures can be a little hard to follow if you're prepared, and you DO have to write a lot of notes, but if you put the work in you'll be rewarded. The TA for the course was super-nice and helpful as well, but it's Dcotor Michael Lanthier who made the course so engaging.
HIST 220 was a really great course that ended too early because of the whole virus thing. The TA was super-chill and helpful, and Professor Lanthier was running the show like a boss and delivering really interesting lectures. There were a lot of little assignments to complete and that was a bit annoying, but fantastic experience overall.
Prof Lanthier gave very useful and intriguing lectures. There was a lot of textbook reading but it was very valuable. There was a lot of work but none of it was very difficult. There's a heavy focus on improving writing which I found tedious but very helpful. I really learned a lot in this class!
An alright prof, but there are better lecturers in the HIST department. He loves using metaphors/artistic ways of speaking in his lectures, like someone "had no more bows in their quiver" or whatnot, and I'd rather he just say it as it is. The weekly quizzes force u to read txtbk. No midterm, heavier final. lectures often go all over the place.
Great instructor! He delivers interesting, thought-provoking lectures--he's not going to spoon-feed you the material, and he assumes you've done the readings, so come prepared! Excellent tutorials where he really pushed the students to think critically--but again, come prepared! Really enjoyed course.
Dr. Lanthier is a great prof. His lectures are engaging and logical. The discussion groups were very helpful to understanding the material. His textbook choice was very good, but ensure you attend class and do the readings or you will struggle with his tests. Dr. Lanthier did a great job of handling the online classes during COVID-19.
I really, really liked this class even though it was sometimes pretty challenging. Doctor Lanthier structured it so that it would help students become better writers and I think I really benefited a lot from this. Yee Rem, the TA, was also super helpful and nice. Good job, guys. We got a free pass on the final exam because of COVID-19: decent!
Pretty good class overall, with some interesting ideas and material. But I'm writing this because Dr. Lanthier was sensible when switching over to online teaching in March. A lot of my other profs were doing weird, stressful stuff like live online lectures and tutorials, but Dr. Lanthier kept it basic. That was fair.
Professor Lanthier and his TA, Dylon Burrows, did a great job of making this class come alive even though it was online because of COVID. There were no fancy live Zoom lectures or discussions, but that worked better for me and those things are just silly anyway. Great recorded lectures and good online discussions made this a good course.
A really good class during a weird, confusing time! Doctor Lanthier didn't mess around with awkward, silly synchronous Zoom lectures. His recorded lectures were engaging and helped me understand the material and its significance. The tutorials, also asynchronous, were useful and the best you can do. This was good for his students!
Everybody knows this by now, but but online classes suck! I can't believe we have to do this for almost another year. Having said that, Doctor Lanthier made a bad situation OK by having good recorded lectures that were easy to listen to, and by NOT making weird, unreasonable demands like other profs at UBC this summer!
Completely agree with the previous poster: this was the most painless online class I've taken since the whole COVID thing started. Professor Lanthier is reasonable when it comes to doing a History class online. His TA was a bit harsh, but that's really his fault. Good recorded lectures, though I have a hard time listening to that stuff.
Dr Lanthier was an amazing prof. As a finance major in my final semester of 2019 with a job already lined up, I took his class as a credit D/fail and he made me want to show up to class which is an achievement in itself. You can tell he genuinely wants to help his students learn and has no ego which is rare for a history prof.10/10 would take again
I ended up taking this class because I was desperate for some extra credits over the summer, but I ended up enjoying it despite the whole remote learning thing. Professor Lanthier made sure everything worked well and kept students engaged without going overboard and having us do too much.
Professor Michael Lanthier is very good in teaching history. He makes you think rather than all-out read. I enjoy his uptakes in his lectures but you have to prepare to read a lot, i say around 3 books in a semester.
One of my favourite profs at UBC! Super engaged and accessible after lecture to ask questions . Very clear instructions and the textbook is GREAT! Makes learning 500 years of history in 3 months a fun experience. Lots of reading and work, but if you do all of it you can definitely get an A! I would absolutely take another history course with him.
Overall a great lecturer who gets you to think about things you wouldn't have considered. Was also quite nice to ask questions in office hours, etc. My biggest issue is that he is unclear in what constitutes an A and his feedback would tell you how great you did, but then you get an A-. Some people also got outright mean comments than constructiv
As good as COVID-19 Zoom courses get. I really liked the asynchronous approach and Dr. Lanthier's informative, relatively short, and pretty fun recorded lectures (but production values could have been better). The TA was OK too, but a bit of a rookie. I'd definitely take a class with Lanthier in person (next year? God please).
I really liked the way he handled the Zoom seminar meetings: he kept them short, and forced students to be responsible and take the initiative. This was a relief during a term when there was TOO MUCH Zoom stuff with TOO MUCH time being spent by students staring at each other. I liked this class a lot, thanks to the prof and other students.
I took Dr. Lanthier for a course I was already very familiar with due to my heritage. Dr. Lanthier's lectures were interesting. He didn't bother with live Zoom meetings which made everything more accessible. The weekly discussion forums are a blast. Major downside however are the massive reading assignments. Several hundred pages a week sometimes.
Loooved the recorded lectures that we could listen to at our own pace, and the World War I role-playing assignment (even though some students screwed it up a bit by not participating). The discussion forums were OK: easy marks, but not super-engaging. All in all, I enjoyed this online course more than I thought and learned a lot.
I'm really enjoying this class and this professor so far. He obviously loves the subject matter, and he's concerned enough about the students to have cut back on the work during the weird online class thing this year (a lot of other professors haven't done that, which is totally unfair). Vive la France!
This is the second time I've taken a class with Michael Lanthier. He tends to cram too much information into his lectures (and even his tutorials), but he makes you think about History in new, interesting ways, and always has interesting readings. His assignments are old school, but he's very, very helpful, and wants his students to do well.
I took this as an elective and it was a big mistake. Get ready to read 50-100 pages of textbook a week and write papers that take at least 3 hours but are worth 2% biweekly. The course load for this is insane. If you don't do the readings, get ready to lose 10% because there's a quiz after each one. I'm just glad I got out before the 20+ hour paper
Solid prof with interesting and organized lectures. However, anywhere from 50-120 pages of readings a week can make the course pretty time consuming. Tutorials are informative. Another complaint is that details of major assignments and exams are left to last minute. Our final exam date wasn't announced until April 9th and we have to make the Qs
Took this class when UBC transitioned to online teaching. Poorly organised lectures as they tended to be extremely long and filled with too much information that sometimes felt redundant. Lots of gap in between that make me wish that had those gaps been filled, the lectures would definitely be a more interesting and bearable experience.
The subject matter had great potential, but this prof taught almost exclusively from the textbook. Overall less engaging or insightful than high school social studies.
This was a really good class, even with the usual limitations of online teaching. The professor knows his stuff, and made the material interesting. Like other people said, there WAS quite a bit of reading, but it was really light stuff (it's not like studying for Stats or something in the Sciences, people!). Lanthier informed and entertained!
A really enjoyable experience, and Doctor Lanthier made me appreciate how messy and complicated history is. There were probably too many little assignments, but the TA's were really helpful, and the marking was usually pretty generous. A lot to study for final exam, but lots of choice. Material was very interesting, instructor very engaging.
Waaay too much stuff on the European Union, but still a great course that helped me, as a Poli Sci Major, better understand Europe today. This professor knows his field, and did a good job of teaching a reasonable amount of material using the obligatory online format. An excellent, informative class for the curious!
One of my favorite professors at UBC. Old-school and traditional in a lot of ways, but easy-going, usually entertaining, and easy to talk to. Claims to have "very high standards", but a pretty easy grader. I've taken three classes with him and enjoyed all of them. Even the online COVID class was good!
online lectures heavily packed with info & dates - sometimes got the dates wrong tho, which was frustrating. michael is very knowledgable and passionate about French history // although suffers from the curse of knowledge // expects students to read weekly & participate in discussions nice guy didn't learn much bc so fast paced - pandemic class
Loved, loved, loved this class! I was getting sick of the whole online pandemic schtick, but Michael was fair and reasonable: his lectures were useful and made good use of our time (particularly if you fast-forward and listen at 1.5 :-), and he made us read short, snappy, interesting things. The assignments were short and balanced. Fun class!
Although the final exam was completely based on the readings and not lectures, we only found out about this 2 weeks before exam season. He spoke with quite a monotone voice in lectures. I personally didn't find his slides engaging (just maps and pictures of people, no text) and they don't help besides contextualising since they barely have content.
Lots and lots of reading in this class, and quite a bit of reading, but the the assignments were all pretty straightforward and easy. You knew exactly what had to do to get a good mark from Day 1. The TA was enthusiastic, and Dotcor Lanthier makes the lectures pretty interesting. I learned a lot. The livestreaming was super convenient too!.
I took this class because it's a requirement for my program, and I was *NOT* looking to it at all because the subject just doesn't interest me much. I was pleasantly surprised and ended up getting a lot more out of this than I thought I would, mainly thanks to Michael's engaged style and his insights into modern European history.
Easy-peasy course! It _looks_ like there's a lot of reading, but there are ways around that. Dr. Lanthier only asked for two papers, and those weren't very demanding, while the final exam was really straightforward. Just do a bit of work, impress the TA once in a while, and you're good. Really interesting course too!
Great prof who made the course really interesting even though we started the term online. There were little assignments due throughout the term, which I thought was a good way to keep us focused. Just one big final exam at the end, which was a bit rough, but not bad. Very engaging lectures, clear marking criteria, good TA's and easy, easy marks!
Prof Lanthier was really great last semester! I enjoyed his lectures so much and found them easy to listen to (his lecture slides are pictures so make sure to write notes). The assignments were straightforward forward and the TAs for the class helped me with any questions I had. Highly recommend!!!
My first History course at UBC, and I thought it was really good. There weren't many assignments during the term, and the big things were due at the end, so you needed to have your act together. But the material was presented in an engaging, challenging way. I left the class feeling a lot smarter, and with a better understanding of history.
Honestly one of my best classes at UBC, professor Lanthier is knowledgeable and his lectures are amazing. We were graded on an essay midterm, a paper (which we could choose any topic relevant to the course) and on the final, as well as participation on tutorials. Definitely pick this course and professor.
Great professor. I am a history minor, I have taken two other courses with Dr. Lanthier before. Respectful, well-spoken, insightful, and reasonable with all his assignments and lectures. Accessible to non-Arts students. Pay close attention to tutorial readings, but the textbook isn't necessary. No slides, show up and you'll be fine.
Very traditional, "top-down", political approach to the history of Europe since World War II, which usually isn't my thing, but this was so well done by Professor Lanthier that I now better understand a lot of things about that part of the world. This course could have ended up as a big mess, but the prof pulled it all together. Great stuff.
I personally found Prof Lanthier's lectures very interesting and easy to listen to (his slides have mainly imag so its imp to take notes to better understand the textbook content). The assignments were pretty straight forward and easy to do plus there was significant time given to complete them. Highly recommend taking this class!!!
Great class that makes me want to take more History. Did _not_ get a high mark, but that's totally on me :-) Prof Lanthier and the TA's actually gave us lots of chances and little assignments to build up to the big ones. Exams weren't super-easy, but not super-hard either. Course material was really, really interesting. Top job!
This was a _very_ easy course and a good GPA booster for me, but your mileage might vary and you need to be ready to read and write. The material and the way it was presented by the prof were _much_ more interesting and fund than I was expecting. He's definitely old-school like others have said, but in a charming, quirky kind of way.
Definitely one of the better, more caring profs at UBC. Doctor Lanthier really wants students to think for themselves and pushes them to analyze class material critically. It was really only after this class was over that I realized how useful it had been and much more confident I felt when talking other courses. Great job.
Really cool guy. Super caring and a great help for advising potential history majors/minors/honours. Had at least a 40 minute meeting about what I can look forward to and answered any questions I had. Also really enthusiastic about history and makes funny jokes which keeps the lectures entertaining. Definitely want to take him again
Very good teacher. This was an excellent course that made me think about a time period I thought I knew really well in a completely different way. Doctor Lanthier tends to focus on the "big events" and "big personalities" in his lectures, but makes room for small countries, marginalized groups, and low-key stuff. A really interesting combo!
Dr. Lanthier gave the best lectures! He is incredibly well-spoken, passionate and welcoming to students of all academic backgrounds. The tutorial participation aspect of this course was stressful as he was listening to multiple groups of discussions at once and then grading us individually which I found a little odd... But overall he is great!
An excellent course taught by a passionate instructor who knows his stuff. Dr. Lanthier makes you think about familiar historical events in new ways, but without the annoying political agenda that's so obvious with other profs at UBC. Nice balance of facts and meta theory. Interesting readings and Lanthier manages discussions really well.
Any university course is incredibly refreshing when the Professor clearly cares a great deal. This was exactly the case for Dr. Lanthier: Engaging lectures, well-organized assignments, and a syllabus with clear expectations. Academically, nothing is better than a prof who makes you want to learn more.
Prof Lanthier makes lectures engaging with visual slides. Assignments are straightforward, and the TAs are helpful. Paired with Unstuck ai, this course provides a solid learning experience. Recommended for students looking for an interesting history class.
I think prof doesn't care for his upper year courses at all. Lectures and slides were dry. Definitely knowledgable but challenging to follow along with his lectures. Be prepared to have unclear notes since he rarely indicates when he's discussing a separate concept or details to the previous one. Final seemed fair but his comments were pretty rude.
I love Lanthier for his clear passion in his work he is teaching but if you miss one lecture you're cooked. He is extremely lecture heavy and slides coorelate little to what he says sometimes. Grades are determined by 2 projects and your grade is 100% TA based. Luckily I got a TA I thouroughly enjoyed.
Prof. Lanthier is an ok teacher. Lecture slides are mainly photos, so you'll need to be able to take notes. You're better off just reading and taking notes from the textbook. He's asks very specific questions that are so discrete in the textbook that I feel like it's very unfair given that this is more of an overview course. Always ends class late

Pay attention and do the readings and you will be fine (he's a good lecturer).
Dr. Lanthier's lectures are content-heavy however, he is a pretty decent lecturer. He's very helpful outside of class if you need clarification. Exams are fair, but the format changes every time and you only find out a like a week before. Best tip for exams is to focus on stuff covered in both lectures and the textbook and you'll be fine.
Lectures are so hard to keep up with. He talks so fast, you don't understand what he says, no context on slides, and he literally does not breathe while lecturing. TAs seem biased when mark pretty hard. He always goes longer in class which seems disrespectful to the students time. 2 midterms and 1 exam. Midterms were rough & no support for them
Michael is super knowledgeable and gave interesting lectures, but it was definitely hard to keep up at times. This course only has two papers and two exams (over both semesters), so the workload is very light but there is assigned readings each week which were normally 20-40 pages. I thought the course content was super interesting though.
Dr. Lanthier's lectures often go over time and can be hard to keep up with, but they're engaging and informative. The first midterm was tough, but he adjusted the format for the later exams based on our feedback and they were much fairer. Assignments were fair, and my TA was a godsend and super helpful and always available for any questions I had.
lectures moved really quickly but there is so much content for HIST 220 so it makes sense, so just be prepared for that, maybe record lectures, especially bc the lecture slides he posts aren't great. read the textbook and you'll be fine, exams heavily textbook based. midterm 1 was hard but midterm 2 and final were better. assignments were fair.
amazing prof, I've taken several courses with him and they are interesting every time. He does speed through lectures sometimes, so be ready to type fast.
This class has a light workload, that being said lectures are very hard to stay engaged during. Myself and my peers have had difficulty following what is being said. Also does not upload complete slides. I am really hoping the upcoming assessments are textbook based
Lanthier's lectures were intense but very detailed. For a survey history course, the content is crazy intense with multiple midterms, a lengthy term paper, a written final exam and weekly discussion meetings on 50+ page readings. All in all, Lanthier runs a good, well-maintained course schedule; however, grades depend on how harsh your TA is.
Dr. Lanthier is very knowledgable and you can ask him anything, but I find myself constantly dozing off in his class. He just has a very low energy lecture and I can't help but fall asleep. Missing lectures is quite detrimental. He also doesn't post his slides in full.
Love him he's a king but please DON'T take this if you value your free time you will never get a minute of peace
Dr. Lanthier is a kind professor, very accessible and knowledgeable, and I like how he brought up very well-known historical events and analyzed them through very particular lenses. That being said, his lectures as very dry and if you have a hard time learning with an instructor that is not very enthusiastic or engaging, you might have a hard time.
Dr. Lanthier is a genuinely nice guy who is obviously very passionate about history, but if you don't absolutely love history and reading long textbook chapters each week I would not recommend this course. There is a good amount of reading and lectures tend to be quite dry, exams are heavily textbook based
Really knowledgeable prof but his tests were extremely specific for the amount of information we are meant to consume in this class, especially with no study guide. Lectures were dry and a bit disorganized, and participation in discussion is weighted heavy. LOTTTTS of reading
