Great Professor, Dry Humor. Class not difficult, but can be confusing at times. This guy will help you in every way that he can. The best ECON prof i've had so far.
Wicked prof. Makes concepts clear. Tests are easy if you study. Best teacher I have had at Lethbridge so far. If you are taking Econ, take it with him.
He knows what he talks about and wants you to not only understand but enjoy economics. I wish all of my classes would resemble his.
Good prof. He does his best to be funny and is pretty relaxed. His notes are online, and he also frequently emails practice questions.

Very good prof. If you study you will get an easy 100% in the class. I found the text book useless, i still have it in the plastic wrap. BUY the study guide some of his test questions are from the guide.
He's really helpful, and tries to make the class as interesting as possible considering its economics. The study guide helps alot because he pulls a lot of his questions from it.
Good prof, dry humour that is actually pretty funny. Study and you will get B or better for sure! Econ 1010 with him is easy.
Michael is the BEST Econ prof in the department. He makes class enjoyable (mostly because he knows econ is boring). GO TO THE LABS! Every type of question that could be on the exams he goes over extensively in the labs. I plan on taking as many Econ courses as i can with him.
Easy class. This is the most BORING class at U of L and he had all sorts of gimmicks to make students laugh. He took the 2 highest marks of the 3 midterms we wrote and offered many bonus mark opportunities. If you do his practice problems at the labs you will do fine. Has a good heart, really cares about the students and knows his stuff.
Michael really tries hard to make economics as interesting as possible, it was my second class with him, and I really enjoyed it, he's probably one of the best econ professors at the University. If you go to class and the lab you'll do really good! 2 best out of 3 midterms and a final, its really decent.
Michael is easily the best teacher I've had to date. He goes way out of his way just keep the class entertaining. Not only that but he can also teach. He gives everyone more than a fair chance at getting a solid grade. Plenty of practice questions, and he even offers bonus questions and assignments. There is no alternative economics teacher!
Mike is absolutely an amazing teacher. He will go out of his way to help you understand, he even helped me in an economics class he wasn't teaching. Mike wants everyone to do well his him class and is extremely fair.
Absolutely hilarious! It's amazing that he can make the class laugh when the material is so dry. Mike always tries his best to explain the concepts if you're confused. Will also give lots of help with the assignments. Not hard to get an A with him.
A great prof. for Econ 3030. As it was first year he proved that the course is not a hard course as student think of this course. He was very helpful and especially his notes were awesome and really really helpful.
He was a pretty good lab teacher. He gave tons of practice questions that may be on the test and gave us all the answers. Sometimes it was a bit hard to understand him but I would take a class again with him any time.
This was my second time around taking a class with Michael. Once again it was a great experience. Clear expectations and no surprises. He makes the class entertaining despite the bland material. You should have no problem pulling a good grade in this class if you put in a fair amount of work. Also he offers bonus marks, great way to pad your grade.
This is the third class I have taken with Michael, he is one of the few professors that actually seems like he wants to be in the room with you. Always helpful, a healthy dry humour, and basically hands high marks out on a silver platter to people who make an effort to even come to class. Best prof I have had so far!
ABSOLUTE GODSEND. Can make sense of even the worst course material, and has ridiculous amounts of office hours - extremely helpful. The Econ department would suffer a serious loss if he ever left.
ok.....
Great teaching technique..
Hilarious. Econ is boring. His class i actually wanted to attend because he explained the boring, and sometimes difficult material in a way anyone could understand. Show up to class and the text is useless. Wasted 130 bucks on it. He takes stuff from study guide, which he posts in webct. He has extremely helpful labs. No excuse to do bad in class.
Makes Economics as fun as is humanly possible
Really good prof. He gives six small exams and only counts five. Make sure you go to labs and review lab questions. He often uses questions straight from the lab. Really easy class. Take econ 3030 with Lanyi!!
1) lol 2) DON'T BUY THE BOOK 3) Study the practice questions 4) I find his antics juvenile, but that is far better than no antics at all. 5) If you need an opposite extreme to understand how good this guy his, compare him to ULeth's single most rated (and one of the worst rated) profs, Donna Townly. Lanyi is as good as Townly is bad. Imagine that.
awesome teacher! he makes econ fun, makes going to school in the mornings enjoyable. He mixes up his lectures with comedy and material with good thought/clarity backing! Definately recommended.
I would take another class from him in a second. He makes class interesting, and is very clear on what is expected.
Meh, easy class if you do the test bank questions. Most lectures are quite boring though and sometimes useless. But overall, easy A for sure.
Great prof. 6 tests, only 5 go to your grade. Material is presented, then students are tested on it. No extra assignments or group junk. Learn the material and get a good grade. If all other profs designed their courses like Mike does the U of L would have a much better management program.
Fantastic course layout in 3030. No textbook. Regular exams are great and are never overwhelming. Be sure to attend the labs, as this is the only time he will detail the calculations on the exams. Provides real world application to economics concepts in his lectures. Very entertaining.
Mike is an okay prof, but I think you get blinded by his charisma. He bumped our mid term 10 percent because the class did so bad. He seems just to want kids to go thru the class.
Oh, managerial economics. It's pretty straight forward stuff. Lanyi is a great prof. You get to drop your lowest grade (out of 6 tests) meaning you can skip that last week of school if you don't want to write the last test. He is a character and it makes things interesting. Good job, Mike!
Lanyi wasn't the best professor. His teaching style was very unattractive and didn't even explain the concepts well. However, he is very nice and seems like he just wants everyone to get a good mark
Great Prof. Always willing to help. Probably the smartest economics prof at this institute.
Michael is a good teacher but I found summer class harder. I wish have a bonus assigment to boost my mark. This is not an easy class and the course is advanced microeconomic with a fancy name - managerial economics that all.
Michael is an awesome prof! He makes his classes as interesting as economic classes can be and treats his students very fairly. He assigned bonus assignments throughout the course which were very helpful! He also gave us 2 attempts on the exams!! Basically, if you work hard and show that you're interested, he will do his utmost to help you out.
He really tries to make the class interesting, but he tries so hard I never knew when i needed to listen or not. I ended up never going to class because his accent plus his constant need to entertain made it hard to decipher what was important to listen to. Labs were helpful because he actually gets down to business. Lectures were pointless.
He is a funny guy and makes class more interesting with his stories. sometimes will get a little side tracked. He made it very clear in lecture on what to study and what materials to use for all of his tests. I would take another class with him for sure
His chapter multiple choice tests are very using in helping learn and solidifying information.
Michael is one of the smartest profs at the university. He truly understands the information because he can explain it in so many different ways, so everyone can understand. All the other Econ profs I've had just teach off of slides and repeat what the textbook says; Michael is different. Really funny guy as well, quirky sense of humour.
Michael is a great prof. He really wants you to receive a good grade. Accent is easy to get used to. Sit up front to read what he writes on the board.
If you have the chance to take a class with Michael, do it! He really understands what he is teaching and is the most clear and interesting Econ prof ive had by far. gives bonus marks and prepares you for test. Awesome guy
He's really funny in class, I was never really able to understand or learn from his lectures (this is likely my fault however) but I love how he tests. It was 6 partially cumulative moodle tests that we got to write 2 times and he put out virtual quizzes that have many of the same questions as the exams! I would recommend him as a prof
Michael is hilarious and really tries to make class interesting. There are 6 exams and if you get above 50% on all 6, the worst mark is dropped. He puts up practice questions which are actually questions used on the exams. Two tries per exam.
Mike is the best prof this school will probably ever see. So much respect for this guy, and really wants his students to succeed! Thanks for a great semester!
His lectures are hard to follow and sometimes not easy to understand however he is interesting and entertaining. he gives practice quizzes for each chapter which have banks of 100's of questions, he also draws the questions for the tests from this bank- you can practice for the test with questions from the test.
The Class was great, I'm not a major in Economics and am horrible at math, BUT the way he has the course set up is set for success! He has test banks that you can take multiple times over and over again in preparation for the test! Use the textbook to help answer the moodle questions, and they will be a random mix on the test! Great class!!
He is hilarious! He makes the class as entertaining as possible and doesn't just read information off of power-points. There are 6 exams which students get 2 attempts for and he has practice questions which are drawn straight from the exam questions. If you show up to class and do the practice questions it's an easy A.
Lanyi is a funny professor that has a great attitude and cares about his students. He gives you OPTIMAL chances to get an A+ in his class and will help you after class if you need it. Would highly suggest taking a class with him.
Entertaining lectures, jokes can be a little dry but he tries. Exams are extremely easy. No need for textbook, just show up in class and the online assignments and you'll do fine.
Mike is a great Prof! Very easy A. Do the labs and your good. Taken 3 courses with Mike and i got A in all. No text book!
Great Prof! Gives practice quizzes that use questions straight from the test!
Definitely would recommend him as an economics teacher, his tests come from a pool of questions that you can practice over and over again. Exams are still hard. Lectures are boring but full of information. Textbooks and practice tests definitely were the main learning source.
Great teacher. Would take again. Offers lots of opportunities to improve your grade and get a good mark
Mike is a great prof. Every other prof in the university should mimic his format of teaching--6 exams each worth an equivalent percentage, he eliminates your worst exam mark if you get 50% or better on all of them, and he lets you write each exam 2x. He videos the lectures in case you miss. Use all of the resources he provides and you're set!
best teacher I have had, go to class and do the tests and you will get an A+ he is funny and engaging
If you have to take micro this is the best way to go! His lectures are amazing tho sometimes not too helpful, but i attend cause i love his style. HEED ME WHEN I SAY; after lectures read the chapter and do those virtual quizzes 30 times each!! I cannot stress that enough! All the questions on the tests come from those quizzes! do the quizzeseasy A
This class is entirely based off of questions given to you before hand online. Read the textbook and do the questions and you should pass with an easy B. Mike is a really funny prof but goes through concepts too quickly. If you want a class where attendance isn't really necessary this would be it.
Lanyi is a great teacher. The course material is definitely challenging, however he gives you plenty of opportunities to succeed through multiple exams, virtual assignments, physical assignments, practice problems, and recorded lectures. His lectures don't follow the textbook but they do build upon and reinforce the concepts. Take him for econ!
Great Prof. He was funny to listen to and made class worth it even though it was not mandatory. Did online quizes that the exact same questions were on moodle tests.
Funny prof and enjoyable class, but pretty hard to understand with his thick accent sometimes. If you go to class there's no need for the textbook because he pulls it all out of there. The tests are fair and easy as long as you study a bit. I recommend him for econ courses.
Very good prof, although lectures seemed rushed. Very easy A if you put the work in. All lectures are recorded (audio and video) which help incase you miss a lecture, as well for studying.
Best prof I've ever had. Hilarious, interesting, and makes you want to go to class. Tests are well organized and straight forward. Take this class! Mikey is the best!!
Probably one of my favourite professors at the university. Explains this very clearly, and gives great examples. Filmed each class and uploaded labs on youtube to help you study. Gives great study guides, and great testing structure set up to help you succeed.
You don't need to go to class. He says you should at the beginning, but everything you need is on moodle. There are practice questions which are the same as on the tests. As long as you read, take notes when you read, study those with the questions online you're good. But you HAVE TO DO THE PRACTICE TEST AND READ.
Yeah Michael give you practices test which are helpful but he doesn't explain anything so have fun learning it all yourself. His lectures are fine until he goes off about some unrealistic examples and graphs that no one can read. He also give assignments that are poorly explained so good luck. I highly recommend not taking him.
Michael Lanyi is a great prof and I would definitely recommend him to anyone taking an ECON course with him. He gives out virtual assignments which you can do as many times as you want and then the same questions are on the tests. If you do the virtual assignments, you cannot fail this course.
I recommend taking macro with Micheal, the course is made up of three midterms and a final. All tests are multiple choice and the questions all come from moodle quizzes that you can take as many times as you want. Easy A
Does not teach you anything and the quizzes that he gives you are confusing.
He makes it incredibly easy to get an A. You HAVE to do the assignments, as the tests are exactly the same questions. Memorize the questions and you'll be able to write an exam in 10 minutes and get at least a 90. If you have trouble with his accent or can't see the board clearly, sit closer to the front.
hes hard to understand and often gets side tracked in his lecture. macro was very confusing but you do the moodle quizes about 50 time and that exact same content is on the exam. word for word just like the pratice exam.
Michael is passionate about economics and extremely clear about expectations. His humour and fun examples make his classes quite engaging! I will absolutely seek out his classes in the future.
Took in the Summer of 2017. He will have you rolling with laughter in his first class. So much that it can be difficult to pay attention. He has a bit of an accent but it isn't really that bad. Tests are fair and if you do the homework he assigns you will get at least 50% of the questions right on his tests. Would recommend for any Econ courses.
Michael's microeconomics class was amazing and his introduction everyday is hilarious. His tests are the exact questions from the virtual assignments; if you know them really well then you'll do amazing on his exams. When I took his class- he had 3 midterms (20% each), one final (30%), and virtual assignments worth 10%.
My fav prof hands down so far. Lectures were incredibly enjoyable -- was the only class I ever looked forward to, and only class that ever made me smile. Clear expectations and he sets you up to succeed. A genuinely nice guy who cares about his students and the content of the course.
Lectures are brutal and do not help at all, goes off on rants not specific to material. 6 midterms, 1 attempt each, no virtual quizzes, tediously long and hard, makes you not want to do half. You really have to watch his examples he has on youtube to be able to understand how to do specific problems. Don't waste your time going to his lectures.
Michael is a pretty good prof. He allows you to do the practices quizzes an unlimited number of times (which are composed of the test bank questions) so it allows you to do good on all the tests. The course deals with a lot of material but he does a good job of making sure he covers the majority of it. And has a noncumulative final.
Overall a decent prof. Tries to make class time engaging over what isn't necessarily an interesting topic. Class time could be used more effectively as he does tend to go off on mostly irrelevant tangents. Assessments were fair and valid.
Michael class was great- really clear grading and all his exams are exact same as VA(do approx 40 each and you will get As). He had 3 midterms(18%), 1 final(26%), assignments(10%); 2 take home and one final in class (textbook, talk to people) and virtual assign (10%). recommend to take 1010 before 1012 but other then that take any class w/Michael
Micheal is an interesting guy. He tries to explain economic concepts in extended metaphors, which tends to complicate, rather than elucidate. Best way to study is to do the assignments on Moodle. I'm pretty bad at math a so it was a bit of a tough ride for me. Make sure to take with a friend that you can study with. Hardest 1000 level I've taken.
One of the best proffs I've ever had. Tells you exactly what kind of things will be on the test, its just up to you to study. Very funny guy, makes class very interesting. He also is very helpful when asking questions. Tests were very fair. All material including videos of his lectures are accesible to students online.
He is very passionate about his work. Take you on detour to explain concepts. Very confusing. He is very lecture heavy. lots of things to read and it could all be on the test.
Very passionate about his studies. But he is hard to understand as he has a accent. Says lots of umms and it is very distracting in the lectures. Take you on these detours that are confusing but trys to link it back to the lecture.
Michael is a solid choice, especially for students who have not taken an economics course in the past. His exams are also very straightforward. You cannot do poorly in ECON1010 if you do the virtual assignments that he posts.
Really like him. He was funny in class and easy to talk to when there were health and family issues. He was easier to talk to after class or on the phone. Very accommodating to students with disabilities. Extremely knowledgable and willing to listen if you had an idea that might help in class. Posts videos of lectures for review or if you miss one.
No assignments or anything, just 6 exams. Only 5 counted because the testing center messed up the first one, but still wasn't great. Told us we didn't need the textbook but didn't teach everything in class. We ended up being 2-3 lectures ahead of schedule, but he missed several important topics that were on the exam. Nice guy but isn't a great prof
Virtual assignments that you get credit for, is just practice questions for exams with unlimited attempts. The VAs are the exam questions. Mostly goes on tangents during lectures but really knows his stuff.
Absolutely stellar teaching ability! His explanations of three-dimensional indifference curves was ingenious, brilliant, and easy to grasp. He never fails to make his students smile at least twice during a given lecture. Furthermore, any students who need extra help he always accommodates with professionalism and eagerness! Definitely enjoyed!
This professor is genuinely passionate and caring for his students. He tells them exactly where to go and how to get there. He always is willing to go against the textbook if it is wrong and will clearly teach things in the most useful and often most entertaining manner.
This class was tough for me because I had to teach it all to myself. Lanyi's lectures are boring and useless. If you want to do good on the tests, go over his youtube videos where he covers the problem sets (I didn't figure this out until it was too late). Entire grade is composed of 6 tests at 16.67% each, so tough class if you don't test well.
Overall great teacher that genuinely cares about his students. Has virtual assignments that you can take repeatedly until you get 10/10, and even once you get 10/10 Id recommend doing them at least 3 more times as many of the questions show up on the exams. No finals, just 4 tests throughout the semester. Read the textbook and do the questions!
Took this course online and it was extremely challenging. His lecture videos were not helpful and most of the material I learnt online through YouTube. The time spent on this course was nearly double that of any other courses during the semester. Must get 100% on assignments to get the mark (all or nothing...)
This class was a breeze. The exams are straightforward to do if you do all the practice questions he provides. Don't be lazy - do the practice problems properly and you'll get a good grade.
There's a lot of homework in this class, but the homework is literally what helps you succeed in the tests. So just do the homework, and you will get a good grade in the class! Also, he's pretty funny which makes the lectures easy to watch.
Ive had Micheal for several of my previously econ classes and he was by far one of my favourite professors. However I am not really sure what happened with this class, tests were designed horribly, possibly due to online format? Over 50% of the class withdrew, Im at 3.9 GPA student, somethings probably wrong if thats happening.
Worse experience ever, where do i begin? his exams are 100 questions long for 100 mins full of mostly calculations. secondly, in order to be prepared for this 100 question exam, u have to pass 5 pretests 10/10 correctly every week. its like they expect everyone to be unemployed with no commitments in order to pass this course. lectures are no help
This is a 'firm but fair' class. Yes, the course load is heavy, but it's more than manageable to get everything done and get A if you stay on top of things. Michael provides tons of material to help you, and he's more than willing to answer questions and walk you through things.
Michael's a little all over the place and sometimes goes off on tangents that make no sense. The test ques are difficult to understand, even my economist friend found them difficult to understand. For the math portion he assumes everyone is either math savvy, but for someone like me that isn't good at math it was extremely hard.
Michael is a pretty good guy.
Mike is awesome, and while there is a lot of homework, his teaching methods are very respectable. There are a lot of quizzes leading up to the exams to help you prepare, but there is no midterm or final. If you get the quizzes and practice questions done, there is no reason you should be doing poorly in this class. Would definitely recommend!
Lectures aren't close to covering everything needed to pass tests, & resources online are disorganized, you need to dig to find what you need to study. Entertaining lectures, but over explains some concepts only to quickly brush over other equally important concepts. Not good at replying to emails, but good at answering questions in-class.
I've had him for many other econ courses and found him to be really good, but not for this course. Concepts are rushed, there's exams every second week, and because it's math-focused, it can be really difficult to follow his notes because many intermediate steps are missing. By the end of the course, provided materials and aid were lacking.(3.8GPA)
I recently had the pleasure of taking a course with Professor Michael. The lectures were clear and concise.
The virtual assignments are the most annoying thing ever, you can understand the subject at hand and just get 1 question wrong every single time.
Look don't take the online course, it doesn't work with his way of teaching. The video quality is bad both visual and sound. The assignments are challenging and annoying as hell. To get through I attended the other professor's lectures to understand the material. PPWT ARE FILLED WITH INFORMATION TO THE MAX LEVEL, your mind can't process it.
Thanks god, the internet exists.
virtual quizzes were a required 100 percent to pass...one wrong meant you failed. I literally had no time to study the material, just bang out four quizzes plus one test a week for however many weeks straight. I don't think I really even know the material after taking the class, just had to pound out quizzes.
Poorly recorded lectures Asked students to get the textbook but recorded lectures are from centuries ago Very tight deadlines So much adlib in recorded lectures that does not really relate to what he's teaching Examples are too weak to understand course Ignores students when questioned Easily frustrated
Lanyi is a dawg. He's amazing. Took Econ 3030 with him, he sets you up to succeed if you are willing to put in the work. Cannot recommend him enough.
I went on to do a masters in economics, and I look back fondly on Michael's classes. He's a good man--he wants you to learn something, doesn't want you to go broke on textbooks, makes your life easy with good communication about what's on exams, etc. Does what he can to simplify things for you. Not everyone is like that. You can't go wrong.
Michael is amazing proff. He designed the course in the way that it was so easy for me!! I'll definitely take more classes with him.
Michael is an okay teacher; he doesn't explain concepts very well. However, the workload (just tests) is reasonable. If you pay attention in lectures and do the quizzes, you'll do great on the chapter exams. He's trying to ensure you do your best, so don't slack off and leave everything to the last minute. His accent is a bit heavy, but it's fine.
Fantastic lectures
Professor Michael's Econ 3030 class is challenging but rewarding if you're willing to put in the work. The lectures are informative, and the practice materials are helpful, though you may need to supplement with online resources like Unstuck ai. Overall, an engaging class for dedicated students.
The professor made a subtle but sarcastic remark about a specific country — something that, had it targeted a different nation, would likely be considered inappropriate or even discriminatory. It was disappointing and felt unnecessary in an academic setting.
Great prof, Teaches well and style of teaching is very easy to follow. A bit repetitive sometimes but nothing annoying at all. Exams are all very fair and understandable. Took his class as an elective and actually ended up liking economics.
not even done this course yet but he is the only Econ prof I have actually paid attention to, and i'm not a fan of econ! he's just a really good teacher, great at explaining things and using real life examples.
I took the online class and it was super easy. there was no guide lines or checks for using ai while taking tests which you just did at home. sometimes his accent is hard to understand because everything is pre recorded and the tests were difficult. but having access to ai makes it so this class should be an easy gpa boost
Honestly I get this is an online course but as someone who's doing a combined degree CPSC/Global Business the workload sometimes feels overwhelming. I understand he wants us to grasp the material but I don't get why he gives a 100 question or even 80 question exams I feel it's too much.
