a lot of MathLab assignments
Even though Mr. Laws is lecture heavy, he is a great guy and an awesome teacher. He tries to make class a little fun while still getting the material across. Really cares about his students and their success as long as you show that you care about getting the grade. Definitely recommend him as a teacher to have for math.
Professor Laws was not a good professor in my eyes. If you are one who struggles in math, do not take him. Otherwise, you should be fine. I had to drop the class due to there only being 3 tests, and I failed the first one. TONS of homework. TONS of pop quizzes. Dropping this class was the best thing I have ever done. Likes to skip steps in lessons.
Michael Laws tries to make class fun while teaching. I find him to be a good professor. There is a lot of homework and quizzes, but they are so easy and help pull your grade up. He also gives lots of opportunities for bonus points on tests.
Professor Laws is a decent teacher as he cares about his students and tries to be a little comedic in class. He is a fast teacher and for students who are not the best at math I would not recommend him. There are only 3 tests and there are alot of pop quizzes and homework assignments.
This man act like he wandered into KSU and bluffed his way into a teaching position and nobody's called him out on it for years
Professor Law's is a good professor and tries to make class fun. If you go to his lectures and take the class seriously by taking good notes, doing homework and study guides, you should do fine. There is homework due throughout the week, 3 exams, a final, and group quizzes usually on fridays that can easily bring your grade down
Horrible calc tecaher. Do not take under any circumstance
I HATE THIS CLASS WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY ENTIRE BEING, I HAVE CRIED OVER THIS CLASS AND THIS IS THE SECOND WEEK OF THE SEMESTER. PROFESSOR LAWS IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER MET.
Don't EVER take his class! He is a horrible Calc teacher. He does not explain anything. He skips steps in all problems and gets corrected so much!
Professor Laws is a nice guy but is not the best teacher. He gives excessive amounts of homework that take upwards of 5+ hours to complete. You notice he does not vet the homework before posting because the homework is often much harder than than it should be. He gives quizzes weekly that are hard. sometimes they are open note but most the time not
Great guy. Worst teacher ever plain and simple no disrespect do not ever take his class. Goes way to quick doesn't explain the steps of problem and gives exams that Good Will Hunting couldn't even figure out.
He is a great guy. Challenging but fun. Maybe it's because I'm a biology major but I am seeing the connections. The tests are hard but he's getting questions straight from the text as he mentions in class. He is always in office hours and willing to help. I used to go by his office all the time but with work I have scaled back.
Pros: +nice +available to help Cons: -ton of homework -sometimes doesn't explain things well -insanely hard tests -need a lot of help outside class to pass (supplemental instruction, SMART center, etc. -works through problems really fast, hard to keep up with DO NOT take this class if you are a DE student. You don't want high school riding on this.
This is the absolute worst proffersor I have ever had at KSU. He doesnt know fully teach how to do the problems. He doesnt come prepared with how to properly do the problems. He gave us a review for test 2, but had to do it himself during class, so we could not check if we were doing things wrong. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!
Do not take. I have never had an issue with math in my life and Im struggling to keep a B. I have always ended math with over a 95. Again, avoid!!!
This professor is very inexperienced and lacks appropriate teaching methods. I actually had to drop this course because he could not explain the material to someone who is unfamiliar with calculus. He is one of those professors who will completely do a problem without explaining any steps. If you value your gpa, do not take this professor!
The worst. Don't take
Do not take his class. He is a nice guy but he is very stubborn, he wont listen to reason, and he is not a good teacher. Goes through the examples quickly and puts random problems on the test that he has never gone over. Had to speak with the assistant to the dean of the math department just to get him to provide extra credit. Do. Not. Take. Him.
worst experience of my academic career! test questions are weird, kind of mumbles while he lectures blazes through examples WHILE skipping steps. He's a very nice guy and is easily accessible through his office hours, but it wasn't enough. If it is your first time taking calc, or if you're a DE student, he should be your last option. PURE STRUGGLE
Mr. Laws is a nice guy but if you are looking to pass the class I do not recommend him one bit! I have never worked so hard for a grade in my life. His tests are ridiculous and are nothing like what he talk about in class. Only thing that saved my grade was the extra 3 points he adds to your final grade at the end if you have 2 or less absences.
He seems confused while going over example problems during lecture. He'll make a mistake and not realize until a couple steps later, which makes it difficult to follow when he tries to go back and fix it. He doesn't allow calculators on exams. The homework is incredibly difficult, and the lectures he gives do not prepare you for it.
Overall, if I could give this professor a 0 rating I would. He is absolutely horrible and I would not recommend taking this professor AT ALL because his homework DOES NOT match up with what he teach in class, therefore it confuses students. He sucks at communicating and teaching. You have a better chance of passing a TRIG class on Marietta campus.
This is one of the worst professors Ive ever had. He is terrible at explaining how to do the math. More than half the homework is on stuff not taught in class. It will take you hours to do it because the book makes no sense. Tests are insanely hard. Gives many group quizzes when he doesnt feel like teaching. He is a very lazy teacher. AVOID!
10/10 would pick another professor. Laws is a really nice person overall but math is just something different in his class. He picks extreme curveballs on every test so if you are stuck with him I would recommend studying on Kahn academy and not even look at the hw questions. I learned this too late in the semester to fix my grade.
Tons of homework that he doesn't explain in class. Tests are so much harder than what's given in class. He's very accessible and tries to make class fun. He seems confused when working out problems. Lots of group quizzes. Only 4 tests, but final grade replaces your lowest test grade. Bonus points and formula sheet on the final, which saved me :')
Professor Laws' Calculus class was different. He is nitpicky with grading on tests (ex. takes off points for not having an equal sign). He tries to explain things to the best of his ability and is fairly open to questions. However, if you are the kind of student who does not ask questions and/or sits in the back, you will struggle. The final was EZ
Drop his class now, he gets confused when he's solving problems and often solves them incorrectly. His homework is completely different from what we do in class and what is on the tests. Harsh grader and takes points off for simple things. Tests are completely different and more difficult whatever you do save your grade and don't take him
I am typically great at math and enjoy it but I did not have an easy time in this class. He is very nice but is not that willing to work with you if you have messed up or dont understand. He teaches really fast so try to keep up. I dropped this class after the first test. Lots of homework and tests. Very hard grader.
Professor Laws is an okay teacher. He is really strict on his grading, so the tests were hard. Some of the questions he assigned for homework were not things we learned in class so it was really hard.
Try to avoid this teacher at all cost. He often solves problems wrong himself which makes it very confusing for us to understand. I never had a problem with math until I took him. He is rude as well and if you come in late for the class he will lock you out. Tests are quite confusing as well. Most likely will end up with a B.
Overall good teacher, but not if you're already struggling with math because it can feel he goes a fast sometimes. Recommend going to office hours if you can.
I am not the best at math and his teaching style was more inclined toward the mathematically-gifted mindset. This was my worst class I've taken in college.
This is the pinnacle of terrible teaching. His test and quizzes are impossible. I had the unfortunate circumstance of taking him during a pandemic. This man is so unorganized its sad. He will tell you he will upload something one day and then make something up about how his personal life interfered. He did not grade our 2nd test for 2 months.
Attendance was for a grade. The entirety of class was done through ALEKS using Respondus LockDown Browser + Respondus Monitor. Lectures never stopped for questions, and 9hrs/wk of HW were for nothing when I dropped the class 2 months in with a 58.
He's honestly a great guy, but the course is extremely challenging and its easy to get lost in his lectures. Lots of homework, and the tests are also difficult.
Decent guy but awful professor. Lectures were spent answering like 4 questions from homework that was 30+ questions. Around 60 questions of homework a week. Extremely harsh grader and also takes forever. Took him 2 months to grade our second test. Changes his mind a lot and awful with technology.
This guy doesn't care about his students. Save yourself time and energy. I wouldn't take his class again even if I were paid to.
He just doesn't care about his students. I entered the class late during add-drop and he wasn't understanding at all. I would never step foot in his classroom ever again.
He never even finished the syllabus so he could change things throughout the year. Not a very good teacher. Randomly cancels class without warning. Do not expect him to respond to emails either. It took him a month and a half to grade a test and a quiz. Puts grades in inconsistently, my grade drop 6 points in 1 day. We never used the book.
He wasn't very good at teaching the problems. The online textbook homework taught me way better, but I barely passed the class. Get the app symbolab. Its for math and can help solve math problems, and if you pay (like 2 dollars) you can have a step by step explanation, (this helped me throughout the class)
He has been one of my easiest classes so far and I am a third year. Yes there's a lot of homework but as long as you stay on top of your work and go to class he will work with you. He is very flexible the homework questions have like 6 attempts for each and easy tests as long as you do the reviews for the tests. He will definitely work with you!
I enjoyed my semester with professor Laws, but I had to teach myself the whole semester. He is a great guy who is passionate about his subject, but in class all you do is go over how to do homework assignments that were due pretty much the day before. The class is mostly just aleks assignments and then a quiz every friday. Easy to struggle with.
Professor Laws were quite possibly one of my least favorite professors I have ever had. His entire class is taught to you by ALEKS assignments and if you need help he immediately sends you to the math lab for tutoring instead of helping you himself. I would not recommend Professor Laws to anyone unless you plan on teaching yourself an entire course
mr. laws was my favorite teacher so far. He will always answer questions and emails, he cares so much about his students, and he is a very clear teacher. I never felt like I was lost and couldn't be helped, because I knew I could ask questions if I needed. ALEKS homework is really important to complete, but it's easy as long as you pay attention.
Do not take him for Calc because he has no idea what he is doing. He explains things in class very poorly. Homework is basically pilled on because you get only two days to complete about 16-20 HARD problems. Quizzes are about five questions and are relatively easy. Tests are nothing like the study guides he provides or the quizzes he gives online.
even though I did have to drop out of this class, the teacher was very sweet. I could tell this was his first year here &he was willing to do anything to interact with the class. Very laid back teacher and would answer questions if I had them. would honestly say the ALEKS hw and tests were very difficult. it was mainly the hw that was the problem.
I took professor Laws for college algebra and pre-calc and is definitely my go-to choice. He does assign a decent amount of homework, but it is because he wants the students to be fully prepared. Do not let the bad ratings fool you into not taking him. Overall a great professor that works with the students. Master the HW and practice tests.
DO NOT TAKE. He quite literally said in class, "Tests are supposed to be harder than what we do in class." And yet he didn't even teach properly in class and put stuff on the tests that are supposed to be in CALC 2 NOT CALC 1, which I am taking. He doesn't know how to teach. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE.
As a person, Professor Laws is a great guy. He is very understanding and does try to help you understand. However, he is not the best at explaining concepts in calculus. I would have to watch videos on my own time to understand the subject many times. Likewise, he does take a long time to grade tests, but he does give partial credit.
Professor laws is one of the best math professors I have came across since I've been in school. He takes his time to explain all the work and he makes sure you know what you are doing before you submit. 10 out of 10!
As a person he is really nice and really tries to interact to students. But, he barely knows what he is teaching... he doesn't explains that well, on my point of view take it if you want to pass with 80 but is hard to get the subject.
Professor Lawson is a super sweet and caring guy. Whenever I did have a difficult time comprehending certain topics, he would help me understand the gist of it, but encouraged me to practice more. Lots of ALEKS HW, and the tests only have 12 questions, so missing one can be detrimental, but he does give out partial credit for work shown.
Please be ready to have to do lots of work and tests are the main part of this course. I would not recommend taking this class until you are 100% familiar with College Algebra.
Okay, Professor Laws is NOT bad at all. I took his class because there were no other available professors. He genuinely likes what he teaches and is willing to help you out. Take advantage of his office hours. He cares about your success, just speak up and do work on time. He is a bit awkward, but a nice guy overall. Take him if no better options.
I had a pleasant experience taking Pre-Calc with Professor Laws! It seems that he is a little shy at times, but answers every question you throw at him and is more than willing to meet with you during office hours to offer you extra help! (He has even attended multiple open math lab sessions to help students and SIs as well!). Tests are also easy!
This course is hard but Professor Laws does not go over harder in questions in class and homework and test questions are much more difficult than what we go over in class. Half of the class is failing. Take a different professor.
It was an unnecessarily difficult learning environment.
No test makeups. Graded inclass homework BEFORE were finish the module of the week. "Prerequisite review" on ALEKS that gives UNRELATED COURSE TOPICS as more work. Randomly makes the "optional" study guides a grade even tho the first one wasn't. REMOVES the explanation button on the ALEKS Study guide. (How else am I supposed to study?)
For precalc was a great professor. For calc he wasn't helpful at the beginning, we had no study guides, tests were way harder than questions discussed in class and hw was always so much harder than needed (used achieve not aleks). After the second test he started to be more helpful and grades started to get better. GO TO HIS OFFICE AND OPEN LAB!
This professor is a nightmare. He gets angry if you don't take notes, gives graded homework before we've covered the material leaving no room to actually understand it. His tests barely have questions so 70% of what you learn is not covered during exams.
Assigns a lot of homework. First, the problems on the homework are way harder than the problems that he goes over in class. Second, there is some material on the homework that hasn't been covered in class. He removed the explanation button off of the ALEKS study guides which makes it very difficult to study for the tests. ALEKS is a nightmare.
not a good teacher, very difficult to follow is lectures, we basically had to teach ourselves through aleks which was then made impossible when he removed the explanation button.
This professor is the very definition of the professor to avoid. Almost half the class is either borderline failing or failed the course. Achieve the homework system, he makes it so you only get 10 attempts on very difficult and sophisticated problems. Also, Lecture is very non-informative. He vaguely explains and doesn't give time for questions.
He's an alright professor. Main issue I had with his class was the homework on ALEKS which was on topics he did not cover until after the homework was due. He randomly picks and chooses what is a grade, some study guides were for a grade others weren't. The class is not hard if you are at least somewhat good at math.
I wouldn't recommend this professor if math isn't your strong suit. Expect a lot of homework that isn't even worth a fraction of your grade. He seldom went over the hard problems in the homework, and the tests were harder than the content we learned. All he did was go over notes in class. Barely taught.
Very unhelpful. So much homework every week. Tests are so hard and very few questions that are each weighted heavy. Studied for hours each week in the SMART center and still barely passed the class. Just does practice problems all class everyday. Do not recommend at all. Half our class dropped and the other half barely passed or failed
Professor Laws knows what he's talking about, but its HARD FOR HIM TO COVEY THAT TO STUDENTS. Not recommended if you're not good at math. Lots of hw on ALEKS like any math course, group assignments once a week. Go to class or fall behind. Tests are worth A LOT. No extra credit. Not a good communicator, but he is trying to make a better effort.
Tests are not very similar to homework. That was the biggest issue for me. Made me want to cry
Avoid taking his class if you can. Most of these reviews are true; he randomly gives pop quizzes. doesn't answer questions clearly, but when it comes to testing, he is a very harsh grader. Tests are not like homework at all. Constantly pushes office hours but is unhelpful during them. Very disorganized and takes a long time to grade tests.
Need to study before class or you will fail. Random quiz!
Professor Laws is a cool guy, and he makes himself available through office hours. However, this class was by far the most difficult class I've taken. So much homework and it was hard at that, and then the tests were also difficult. He does give out partial credit though and he's a nice person. Please use his office hours and he will help you!
Avoid Professor Laws at all costs! The worst professor by far that I have ever had at KSU! So much homework every week and his tests are extremely hard. He is a tough grader and I bet over half of our class made a D or F! Do not take him or just get ready for a miserable semester!
Prof. Michael Laws genuinely cares about every one of his students. He gave us many extra credit points and the homework is tougher than the tests (which I consider to be a good thing). I never used office hours but from what I heard it seems that he's very accessible out of class. I would definitely take calculus 2 with him if he offered it.
I had Professor Laws for precalc and calc 1 and loved him. He definitly cares about every student and wants you to excel. His grading is tough and lectures can be hard to follow if you're behind. Pop quizzes in class a lot that you do with a group. He drops a few grades at end of semester. There is lots of homework though, GO TO OFFICE HOURS!
Everything was online except for the final exam at the end. All the homework and tests (there were two) were on Acheive with no lock down browser. I did take this class online over the summer so consider that. You did need to get atleast a 50% on the final exam to pass the class. If you can learn on your own, I would take this class.
If you know what's good for you and If you want a nice life, just don't take this professor.
he is cool and sort of a good teacher but he teaches way too fast. you'd have to write notes as he teach and everyone isn't capable of that. its either notes, or listen & sometimes people doesn't secure what is taught that day for the rest of the semester. he also teaches as if majority of the stuff he teach, "we should know from highschool"
Nice guy but very hard to learn from. He was kind of all over the place at times.
If you want a good life, do not take this man.
I would not suggest this teacher at all. He beats around the bush when teaching, but he does not teach. He really just talks there is no sort of explanation whatsoever. He is kind, but is not a good teacher. He talks kind of quietly or as if he is shy to teach. He does not review anything really before the test. So I would stay away if I were you!
Do not take this professor if you don't want to be stressed tremendously. My mental health got worse after taking him. He is an okay person but is not a good professor at all. He does not teach; he lectures with no explanation. But Hey, if you want to teach yourself, this is the teacher for you!
Terrible professor! He pulled up his rate my professor, in class, and was interrogating us why his class was so bad. He starts his sentences load but ends them super quiet to the point where you can't hear him. Take attendance every class. Homework is ALEX and lots of it. Don't ask him questions because he doesn't have an answer.
In this class, when going over new units he doesn't necessarily tell you what to know prior to learning and assumes that you should know. The teachings in class are very vague and never go into enough detail. The tests also hardly go over what you learn in class. It was rough.
I'm not sure why he doesn't have better reviews, however the class isn't that hard. The workload consists of prerequisite, module ALEKS homework, and some graded group assignments. He has a witty personality and does answer questions in class and advises to review notes on the module before coming to class.
Lazy reviews by lazy students. If you put a little effort into this class you will be fine. Yes there is a lot of homework, its a math class. Professor is friendly and makes himself available outside of class if you need help. Gives partial credit on everything. Holds test reviews the night prior that are helpfu.l Just show up and make the effort.
He's quite literally the only professor i know to try and make you memorize every formula and the whole unit circle with no help whatsoever
I enjoyed the class, Mr. Laws was involved as much as he could. Most of the reviews are from students largely uninterested in STEM related field so while I sympathize with some, I feel as though some classes just require more input from the students not the teacher in order to attain success. Blaming the professor is just avoiding accountability.
Hadn't taken any math classes since 2016, jumped right into precal. It's doable as long as you put in effort. The professor can't learn it for you. He does a good job of giving you exactly what you need to succeed. Study guide is very similar to tests, also he hosts teams meeting the night before the exam to go over the study guide.
I took this professor during the Spring 2025 semester, and he was amazing! He's a great lecturer and is usually available after class. Participation will greatly benefit you, both in terms of your relationship with the professor and your grade. I'd take him as a professor again!
Don't take this professor. I did not do good in this class and I tried so hard but I just couldn't understand what he was explaining he just expected the students to know and figure out. This class had me stressed the whole semester. The class lessons did not make sense. The lectures were not helpful, and the final was HARD.
You learn the most in class and does a good job explaining how to get an answer. He always has office hours and open study rooms the week before a test to come in if you need help. As long as you do your homework and attend class you will be fine.
Attendance is mandatory for this class, the classwork and homework isn't worth anything really in the gradebook but the test weigh heavy in the gradebook.
0/10 don't recommend. Definitely, if you can't catch on quickly, do not take, he says it one time, then moves on. Lots of homework and tests weigh heavily. I withdrew from the class because it was too much, but after I'm very stress-free.
Professor Laws is a great teacher. Even though I'm not very good at math, he gives plenty of chances to succeed. The class is mostly self-taught and lectures aren't super detailed, but doing the homework and study guides makes it manageable. I'd take him again.
I am extremely bad at math, but I did okay. Lots of homework, but I like the program he used. He was very helpful when it came to my testing with accommodations, and always there to help! He's also very funny when you least expect it. It's a tough class, but if you're a quick learner, you'll be fine. You have to go to class!
This professor was absolutely amazing! This is a challenging course, but this professor goes above and beyond to work with his students. He offers test recovery, partial credit, and many extra assignments to boost your grade. He is a little fast paced, but will slow down when asked. His class environment is so welcoming! TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
I think Mr. Laws was a great professor, as long as you pay attention and give effort you will be fine. He is also very nice and understanding, his reviews should be higher and i would take him again.
i had to go home and watch youtube videos after class everyday to teach myself how to do what we learned in class. college algebra is a pretty easy class in general though so not incredibly hard, i just wish i had a different professor so i didn't have to do all the extra learning outside of class.
if you can't teach yourself the content, don't take him. he is not a great lecturer and you teach yourself through aleks. the tests are easy & just like the study guide. he also replaced your lowest test grade with a recovery assignment. honestly not a bad class or professor
