He is unapproachable for a lab teacher. He sits with his feet up at the computer while you are figuring your way around infectious organisms!! He doesn't let you know your grades, and takes points off that he deems necessary during class, but doesn't let you know if they are counting against you or not.
There is no way you can read is handwriting and everything is on the chalk board!!
He's very unclear about his lectures, and fail you because of 1 point. No extra credit or curving. He have said he could care less whether you pass he just puts the grade in. So study hard day and night if you want to pass I did the 2nd time around. cause of 1and half point
I only had him for lab, but he was the best lab instructor I've had. Took time at the beginning to go over exactly what we needed to do that period, willing to give back points on iffy test questions. A little eccentric (he didn't need that headset), and I agree with the handwriting. But overall I would highly recommend him.
His handwriting is jibberish. You need a professional to decifer it. But if you can and if you read you will pass his tests. He has study guides that help if you take time to do them. Everything is explained and if you ask a question he will clarify what he means. He is a good teacher and good luck if you have him.
Its true about the feet on the desk during lab, and him being unapproachable, if u thought lab was bad u take him for lecture. He just reads right out the book, he doesn't help you understand any thing, and has been know to make smart comments to students for asking questions. If more then half the class is failing, something needs to be done!
Lecture: He still uses the chalk board and his handwriting is very hard to read. You really have to listen to know what he is writing. He also does not spell very well so you may have to look things up in your book. He only answers questions if he deems he should. If he thinks he answered it during lecture he won't answer it a second time.
Lab: He does kick up his feet on the desk. He explains what should be done at the beginning of lab and that is all. He does't go over whether results are correct or not. He doesn't provide grades on all work turned in. He sometimes has smart remarks to questions. You can pass but you have to work hard and study hard!
Dr. Lema is tough, but I would recommend him. In lecture it can be difficult to read his writing on the board, so take notes fast as he talks. If you put forth the effort and study his lecture notes, read the book, and do the study guide you should be in good shape. :)
Very knowledgeable.Tests off notes. Must write fast to keep up with his pace. Recommend record class on MP3. If he stresses anything PAY ATTENTION. Will help if you ask him. This is a difficult course. He is not a warm and fuzzzy type of guy. He is all business.Just lectures, doesn't get off subject. Excellent use of class time. Work hard & pass.
This guy is strictly a chalkboard man. All his test questions come from his chalkboard notes, so dont miss any classes. Also, he likes true/false and all of the above questions, but watch out for choices like all of the above or a and b , or a b and c but not D. He has a weird sense of testing if u ask me. Anyway, utilize your memorization skil
Writes on chalkboard and just talks and talks. If you ask a question that he thinks he has already answer he will not answer it again. Handwriting is horrible so I recommend recording his lectures. For lab he is very laid back and explains everything in detail. Like a different man. I loved him for lab...not so much for lecture.
Dr.lema is not a good teacher. He was the worst hand writing ever and his test comes from his notes. But u must learn his note backwards and frontwards for you to pass his class. it's a lot of information you have to learn in a short period of time.
Highly intelligent. Knows his stuff. So, you better read your textbook and, Take great notes.
Don't be fooled by exams only coming from his notes. Read everything you can. Read Carter's, Keller's website and the book. Be prepard to write on the first day. He is a completely different instructor in Lab. He goes over the dumbest stuff 18 times before you get started. And he gives VERY little time to complete the skill and applications.
Dr. Lema is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. He is a very smart man. His handwriting is sloppy but is readable. Print his study guides off of his website and DO THEM. Learn all the definitions. ALOT of his test questions come from the study guides. So if you do them his test are not hard. He will answers any questions you have.
Dr. Lema suck!!! His Test are nothing like his notes. He will confuse you on the test. always late to class even later on test days...If I was you, don't take him. Lab is laid back.
Dr. Lema is very intelligent, but his class is very hard. He seems to be much harder than any of the other professors for this subject. He does test off of his notes, but studying just the notes will not get you an A. His test questions are deceptive and you need to know minor details about an insane amount of material. Don't take him.
Do not take unless you HAVE to!!
Dr. Lema is a very smart man. His class is tought and his test are tricky, but he will answer any questions you have. He moves fast, but he has to in order to finish the semester without craming multiple test at the end. Study you note GOOD and read the test questions carefully as well as the answers.
Even though I did not pass this class, I found Lema interesting in how his information is presented, although not legible sometimes... just ask and he may give you a stupid look, but honestly if u really commit to studying (which I didn't) its really not that bad. overall a pretty good teacher, very laid back in lab.
Please do not take this guy his writing is not legible, he talks none stop and never make sure you understand. When you ask a question his facial expression is like " You Don't Know That". He's not friendly and truly not considerable at all. Please choose another instructor.
This class was very hard. Lema is very smart and knows everything possible it is to know about this subject. But he talks fast so you wont be able to comprehend. His test are very tricky on purpose so that you will not pass it. His handwriting is chicken scratch. I failed. Do not take him.
DO NOT take his class unless u are naturally gifted in science and are able to teach yourself.
Dr. Lema is a very good instructor. He stays on track in lecture. He gives time to study for exams. He lets you know what to expect in advance. He initially comes across as unapproachable BUT is willing to help! The material is hard though and you have to study! He gives you notes and the notes contain the exam material. He is great in lab!
Hey is very smart and knows his material but does a terrible job of teaching. He basically just reads his notes word or word.
He is very intellectual and knows his stuff, but doesn't convey it as well as I feel like should be. It is a hard subject, so read the book. His tests are tricky, you have to really know material to do well in class. He is funny in his own way, I like him as a person. He comes across as stand offish, but he is really willing to help.
Book & Atlas aren't needed. all you need is the lab book & Print out his notes 4 lec & if you record his class it's very helpful. The test is straight from the notes & the definitions "pay close attn to words he mentions several times most likely it will be on the test. You have to study and don't miss any labs or you will miss out on points.
Dr. Lema was not so bad, his class was very interesting, and I thought he did a good job explaining everything. He lets you know repeatedly what will be on the tests, and how to prepare. If you actually study, you will pass. Just read his notes. He is not really a chalkboard man anymore.
I couldn't ask for a better teacher for micro. He is helpful if you actually come to him and half way know what's going on (but just saying I don't know anything about anything isn't going to cut it with him) The book really help things click in my head when the notes just didnt cut it. Record class & try not to miss any because he gives test hints
He is a very intelligent guy, but I'm not sure he's cut out to be a teacher. All he does is read from his notes, and when he does write something down you can't read it. His tests are hard. I would study, and barely pass, if I passed at all (Which I didn't more than half the time) If you have no choice but to take him, I wish you luck.
All he does is show up to class and reads from his notes. The same notes you can pull up at home. Whenever he DOES gets up from behind the desk (which is not much)to draw/write on the board you can barely read it. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. His notes/outlines are horrible with alot of his personal abbreviations. Smart guy but very poor teaching skills.
Great teacher! If you study the notes provided on his site and use the book you'll do great! Explains things in ways you can understand and are interesting, extremely patient when confused, and actually finishes all the material on time and even has days left to just review and ask questions but you do have to put in the time b/c its a hard course
I really enjoyed his class. I have taken BIO 210 and BIO 211 at MTC and I thought both were much harder than Micro. If you print out his notes ahead of class and also take additional notes from his lecture, you will be fine. Study those notes only because the tests are straight from his lecture. Don't buy the text book.
He is VERY unhelpful. His notes are Very disorganized.
Very unorganized, notes will not prepare you for exams, does not provide any assistance with clarifying material, difficult to understand
I am an A stdnt. was 1 pt away from a B and he gave me a C in the class. He was very nice and has a dry sense of humor but you will not get any extra credit to help you raise your grade. He does not budge. I liked his class but his tests are ridiculously hard. I studied until I knew it forwards and backwards; how he makes up the tsts and words his questions are tough. I got a C on all his tests and was one point from making an A in lab. Work your butt off and you might pass with a D or C.
Avoid this teacher to maintain your A-B average. His notes are very scrambled, complicates the topics, test are vey tough, does not provide clarity on subject when asked, gives no assistance in lab.
He seems to be very knowledgeable on the subject but is the worst professor I have ever taken. His lecture and notes are confusing, useless, and counter-productive. You never get to look over your tests after taking them. He explains topics as if you were a graduate student or a colleague. ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS PROFESSOR. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
The material is a lot just like any other science course but his test questions are HARD. Avoid this class.
The lecture notes are all online but they are unorganized and have many formatting and spelling errors. Don't bother with getting the text book because it doesn't follow his notes much at all and the differences can be very confusing. For the test just know the notes & small details. I'm a dedicated student and my advise is to avoid him if you can.
I took him in the fall of 2013. If you ask for help, he doesn't really seem to want to be bothered. He doesn't keep his office hours either. I enjoyed lab, and I thought he was very helpful. He usually tests on what's in his notes, so read EVERYTHING in the book that relates to his notes and you should be okay. I earned a 'B'
Doesn't keep his posted office hours, so don't bother to ask for help--unless you email him. He tests by his lecture notes, so read EVERYTHING in the book that relates to his lecture notes, and you'll do fine. He has no personality.
Dr. Lema is the worst Bio instructor I've ever met. He just read his slides word by word. He makes everybody so bored. He is always late . His tests are pretty trick and hard. Some chapters he skips are still on the test too. Sometimes he read his slides of three chapters in one class. Avoid his class as possible as you can, otherwise
Took him in the Fall of 2013. Didn't keep posted office hours--prefers to correspond via email. Will allow you to see your tests for lab and lecture. Seemed to be "going through the motions" while he taught. I guess he was tired. The first 2 tests were difficult, but the remainder were okay. I made a "B."
Don't expect this to be an easy class. You have to learn the material. He won't spoon feed you so study, attend class, and you will do fine. Tests are hard. Know your vocabulary and ask for help if you need it. Would take him again. Enjoyed his labs and learned a lot.
First, I think this professor is excellent. I did not realize how organized and thorough his course was until a few classes in. You really have to pay attention to what he is saying because he covers everything you need to know. But trust me, every thing he says will be on the exam. Studying for this course is the true, old-fashioned studying.
Dr. Lema is a great guy. He works with you if you're unable to take his test on certain days. Test are pretty hard in lecture and they are taken in class. Mixed multiple choice, written definitions, and TF. The notes in class aren't easy to understand, especially if you miss class. Lab is pretty fun. I'd say take this class alone if you can.
Lema is a good micr teacher. In lectrue just print off the notes and study. Dont need the Lecture book lab book is a MUST. In lab there is never a dull moment your always working with bacteria. He is a good professor.
Great Teacher. Very dry and sarcastic sense of humor, "I'll raise my hand when I am being sarcastic.". No book needed, all test questions from lecture. Need lab manual. You will have a hard time passing if you do not study his notes. Tells you what is on Tests so pay attention when he says,," you need to know this or this is important."Gives xcred.
Hard to follow in class. Lab is easy just practice the microscope thoroughly. Rounds up on grade.
Lema is a great teacher! He tell you everything you need to know so attend lectures, print off notes, and pay attention. Lab is fun never a dull moment. He is very organized and funny. He gives extra credit and practice questions to help you prepare for tests.
I wish I'd taken a different prof. The information is very interesting, & Lema is smart, but he's not good at conveying the information coherently. He doesn't have office hours & doesn't reply to emails. He seems annoyed when asked questions in lecture & lab. He intentionally tries to trick you on tests. Know everything in his notes & then some.
I believe Dr Lema is a person you have to get to know. As the semester goes on, he at least smiles. He's not very interactive with his students, that's for sure. He's not gonna give u a grade, you have to earn it! But if you study his notes, you'll be fine! His test questions are straight from his notes! Not understanding folks saying there not!
By far the worst biology class I've ever taken. Usually an A or B student but had to struggle to come out with a C. Over half the class dropped his course this summer and the remaining half did okay. Notes were terrible, tests were terrible because he purposefully tries to trip people up. Word of advice: avoid his class if you can!
Taking him for lab. Hes always late to class, then explains the multiple different skills youre doing that day, and gives you the rest of class to do them all (30 min) He rushes the explanations so theyre hard to remember. We hurry to get all skills done and its never enough time! If you dont finish them, oh well! Theyll be on the practicals!
Little engagement with him, dont expect him to break things down for you if you dont get it. He teaches off of word documents he created. Didnt need the book, but its important to listen no matter how boring and dry the lecture is. Any word is fair game for a definition. Studying quizlets help, but really take notes on what he teaches off of.
Dr. Lema is very smart, but be prepared for very dry, hard to understand material. He goes straight off of Microsoft Word notes that have a multitude of typos, and is VERY hard to understand. He has a very hard time, and I don't think he honestly tries, to break things down to an understandable level. I got a B, only because I read the textbook -_-
Hnotes can be hard to understand, a lot of type-os and basically an outline. I HIGHLY suggest printing them out and writing down what he says. Test are straight from notes, Dont bother with the study guide. Lab after mid term is difficult so really pay attention. Make sure you read the discussion in lab manual for quizzes!! Quizlet helps
Seeing past reviews for Dr. Lema had me second guessing my prof. selection, but Dr. Lema is a quirky old man that tells the corniest Micro jokes. He's not very talkative but do try to get to know him. He knows what hes talking about. Grading is kind of weird so keep track of what you get. Not a hard class, make sure you put in the effort to study
Lecture was hard to understand and boring so its really hard to stay focused in class. Lab was hard too. If youre someone who learns by seeing dont take his class. He doesnt show you how to do things he just repeats the info that comes in the lab manual and basically just sits at his desk the whole class doing nothing. He makes it hard to pass
Worst teacher ever !!! He is boring and it is so hard to pay attention. He acts like we are becoming microbiologists! Study his notes or you wont pass! Lab tests are harder than lecture. Study guides are useless
He is AWFUL! If there is any chance for you to take a different professor please do. He is impossible to follow during the lecture and the little materials that he gives you to prepare for tests are useless. His tests have questions on there of things that we never discussed in class. Didn't use the textbook. Lab is easy but only lasts 30 minutes.
During COVID19 professor Lema was amazing. Even before COVID19 his instructions were clear and straight to the point. Do what he says and youll pass your assignments easily. Study your lab book!
Dr. Lema is the best professor I have ever taken! During covid, our classes were held on zoom. He is very lecture heavy & his tests are STRICTLY from his notes & lectures. If you don't pay attention, you will not pass. Only reason why I got a C is bc I'm a fulltime mom to 4 boys, a wife and I work. He doesn't get enough credit on how amazing he is!
I was hesitant to take his class due to the previous reviews, however, I found this class to be not bad at all. It wasn't super easy but as long as you follow along in class and study, you should be fine.
Dr. Lema is a tough professor, he expects professionalism in the classroom and lab. READ, READ, READ! the only way you are going to pass his class is reading. 10/10 would recommend him!
He used his digital notes as our study tool, but it's tough to read his writing, and the study guide for the test wasn't so helpful. The good thing is he provided recording lectures, so I'll be able to review the lectures. But, overall, I'll not retake his class again.
Dr. Lema knows his stuff, he literally wrote the lab manual. His notes are basically lists of talking points for him so be sure to add onto them. His tests are challenging and his answer options are VERY tricky. His handwriting is illegible, no two ways about it. His lectures are incredibly boring and he doesn't ask for engagement so STAY AWAKE.
Poor professor. Doesn't care if his students pass or not. Isn't willing to help students when they have questions. Teaches as if you should already know the information. Gives terrible "study guides"; is more of an outline for him. Very tough test. Lots of true/false questions that are tricky, meaning maybe 1 word is off. Would never take him again
All of the other reviews are pretty accurate. About two months into the course, he is knowledgable but he tends to ramble during his lectures, pretty boring. He expects you to know and find everything on your own. He can sometimes get rude when asking questions. He's ok, but his true or false questions are extremely tricky on his test.
He should not be teaching online Lab classes. Tests & quizzes are all based on his notes & lectures, but his writing is illegible. He hasn't bothered to type it up, making it impossible to study. The tests deal w/ semantics & fine details, so the information lost is critical to passing. Online resources from past students are the only way to pass.
His lectures are kind of boring. His test are VERY VERY tricky!
Despite the negative remarks, Dr. Lema is a good teacher. He provides the needed info to pass the class, it's up to you to do the work. His teaching method includes repeating the material over several class sessions which is great! His delivery is different, He does talk pretty fast but that's who he is & it is something you will have to adapt to!
He doesn't seem to care if anyone is following along with the material. He answers absolutely NO emails and that includes other classmates I have spoken with as well. If you want questions answered you need to ask them on Zoom while he's forced to respond to you. He couldn't care less about whether or not his students are retaining information.
Not only was Professor Lema extremely unprofessional, and would often cut off students who ask a question and just say, "As stated previously..." It is also five days away from the semester being over, and none of my assignments are in to be graded some of which were turned in in early Nov... Overall would not recommend at all.
Dr. Lema was okay. His lectures are repetitive but sometimes funny. He is nice enough, will email back. But he often gives short answers. If you want to pass you need to do a lot of studying on your own. He does not give extra credit and you are graded by very few assignments. Have to put in a lot of study time if you want the A.
I took this class over the Summer semester and for
Dr. Lema is a good professor and you can tell he enjoys what he does but I highly recommend having some discipline and good study habits in order to pass his class. Hint for future students, pay attention to details in his lectures and notes!
Worst professor i have ever had. Don't bother emailing or asking questions as he won't answer. He repeats things over and over. Test questions are worded to trick you. You'll have mostly test no E.C his notes are poorly done and anything on them or said in class will be on the test. 100/10 Don't do it!
An excellent and highly intelligent professor. His lectures are very info-dump-y, so if you learn well like that, you'll do well, but if not, you'll have trouble. Very few assignments outside of tests, so you have to do well on almost all of them to pass. Provides research papers and extra credit opportunities, easy to access outside of class.
I am half way into the course and I recommend not taking his class EVER. Despite I have a pretty good grade in this class it was all because I learned it myself. He was no help. In fact, when I asked him a question about DNA translation his response was, "there is a tutor on D2L for you and she can help you". I feel dumb if I ask a question.
Always late. Lectures composed of handmade yellow legal pad notes & pictures, other part is rambling Word doc & awkward commentary. Study guides and reviews-slim & the few answers provided come w/ a disclaimer stating the given answer might be wrong so you just should check for yourself. Tests-worded to confuse. Test/quiz schedule-non-existent.
He is not a terrible professor if you can handle unorganized chaos. You can tell he loves teaching Microbiology, but you only have test and they are either T/F or answer choices A-E. Verbage is extremely tricky. Does not use D2L like supposed to everything is on the home page unorganized and has schedules from 2016 to go off of.
