He was very helpful. The labs were on schedule with the lecture which helps for reinforcement of the subject. Try to get lab after lecture for extra clarity. Got through all of the material needed and very enthusiastic about the subject.
good lecturer and nice to look at
His lectures were sometimes really confusing and unfortunately boring. His exams were sometimes easy, if you studied and sometimes I felt like he asked things we had not really covered in class. Tucks everything in his pants, even sweatshirts..
ummmmmmm hummmmmmmmm
Well, the class is interesting. However, the teacher is not. Barely writes anything on the board, pretty boring lecturer, basically my notes were not that great. Tests are not too hard. The book is pretty good. It does take some time to study, not an easy A but a possible A.
Boring lectures, I spent more time recording the funny things he said than taking notes. On his test you can write anything, even if it is the wrong question. He is generous with partial credit.

great teacher..he gets side tracked alot but still knows his stuff.
Lectures can be a little boring, but the material is pretty interesting. His notes are basically an outline of the chapter. Tests are easy, just read the book. He reminds me of Richard Dreyfuss from "Jaws".
His lectures are overall boring. If you read the material the class is not that hard. He lets you use a full front and back cheat sheet on his tests and he curves the overall average grade of all tests, plus he drops your lowest test grade. Attendance is not mandatory. Make sure you read the summary at the end of each chapter and you should do well.
Really nice guy but the class can get a little boring but don't all classes? He gives a great curve and is helpful.
Very vague in class so you must read the book. The lectures are no the informative. He gives great curves!
he is very scatterbrained and hard to follow. Don't go to class, just READ THE BOOK. seriously lectures are a waste of time. But he gives awesome curves on every exam, like 12-20 pt curves. Take his class for the glorius curves and because if you read the book you're straight.
A really nice guy who is not a very good lecturer. Lectures are dull and he gets off topic a lot, but he does let you know what's coming up on the exams. He tests almost all from the book, so bring your book and highlight the important paragraphs. Easy homework and big curve on final grades. Very helpful during office hours.
I really thought I liked biology until I had Lentz as a professor. He does not need to be teaching college anymore. He is a nice guy, but just cannot lecture.
he lectured and i took notes, but none of that was on the test! Don't take this class unless you plan on reading the entire biology book.
Not helpful, teaches irradically, gets his self confused
I thought Lentz was awesome. He's really smart and I think sometimes his thoughts get ahead of him, but ultimately he knows what he's talking about and if you're confused go to his office and he's very helpful.
MoCell. Dr. Lentz is a great guy, but not the best lecturer. Lectures are sometimes unorganized, especially if he is running behind. All lectures come from the book, so buy it. Tests are pretty fair. I learned a lot, but it was sometimes frustrating too.
Dr. Lentz isn't the best teacher, but you can count on the book for any lack of teaching skills. His classes tend to be very focused on what the book says. If you go talk to him one on one, probably one of the most helpful profs at the university. He is also a great guy in general. Don't be afraid of taking him, he is great.
Very scatter-brained. Lectures are very general and the test questions are way more complicated and specific. Don't even bother going to the lectures...just read the book and you'll be fine. That's what I did and got a b+ Oh and he lets you use the front and back of a piece of paper as a cheat sheet for each test!
mmmmmm
Fairly good professor. Class is pretty easy. Get to use a cheat sheet for each test which helps and drops lowest test grade. Would reccomend taking his class. Never used the book except to study post ch tests be4 the test and got a B
Dr. Lentz is a very intelligent man who really knows his stuff and passionate about what he does. His 'scatterbrained' tendencies stem from the fact that he has tons of information going through his head at any given time it would be hard for anyone to keep up. Allows a notecard for tests which is a lifesaver. My rating: A-.
Steer clear. While his exams may be easy (since he allows a two sided 8.5 x 11 cheat sheet) he does not know what he's talking about. He constantly contradicts himself & looks for verification because he doesn't know off-hand what he's trying to say. Very confusing, doesn't explain complex topics well. I have a 4.0 and found his class confusing
There are 5 Exams which are non-cumulative. Your lowest exam grade is dropped. For each exam you get to use a 8.5 x 11 cheat sheet with wriiten info. on both the front and the back. There are quizes on blackboard and you have 72 hours to take them. Attendence is not required but most of the exam questions come from his lectures.
okay all i have to say is show up and take detail notes which u'll use on a cheap sheet for his test and you will pass with an A... dont think u can read the book and pass his class.. for some reason it doesnt work with him... so just show up even if he is boring it's alot easier if u take those notes...
He gets a lil scatterbrained during lecture he usually knows what hes talking about & he loves what he teaches. All his quizzes are online and he allows crib sheet for his tests. Id recommend attending class as much as possible but its not mandatory. If you miss class read the book though he follows it pretty closely same goes if u dont understand.
He's boring but is really into what he teaches, if that makes any sence. He covers exactly what's in the book so if you read you'll do fine.
Really nice guy but very scatter-brained. Lectures were unorganized. Class was a breeze. Read the book and go to a few lectures and you'll be fine.
Dr. Lentz is good professor. His lectures can be a bit disorganized. Tip - take notes, but go back through the chapters and memorize each of the figures he talks about. His tests focus largely on the important figures throught the chapters. The disk that comes with the book is also relatively helpful. Follow my instructions and you'll do fine.
Lectures were all over the place. Allowed a cheat sheet for each test, every test had a curve. Gave out a ton of extra credit which was added to tests scores, 4 tests, dropped lowest test score. No reason for anyone not to get an A in class if you make your cheat sheet and do all of the extra credit. No book, but he posted all of the notes.
ALL OVER The PLACE!!! but a very good professor..test are a little confusing but you should pass pretty easily!
thought he was going to be really easy when i entered the class but hes ALL OVER THE PLACE... constantly contradicted himself. he gives a cheat sheet but if you go by the notes he gives you it wont help... use what he says in lecture and read it from the book. had overheads on blackboard but they were just figures... bs teacher... pretty horrible
his lectures definately are not boring. he loves what he does and it comes out when he teaches. not the best professor but not the worst
Very nice. Very scatterbrained. It's a hard class and it's in your best interest to attend.. but if you don't you will learn everything you need to know in the book! He cares about his students and wants everyone to pass. He's a good teacher.
He is easy and hard at the same time. He offers lots of extra credit which is a big help on your exams, but his lectures are confusing. Basically read the book, go to his class for extra credit, do the cheat sheet, and you will pass.
Doesn't look at the students when talking. Odd sense of humor. Turns his back when writing on the board. Not very helpful. Very confusing.
Doesn't look at the students when talking. Odd sense of humor. Turns his back when writing on the board. Not very helpful. Very confusing.
great teacher, would take him for any course.
Professor Lentz loves what he does and is a excellent teacher if you can follow him. He is 'scatterbrained' bc he has SO much information and he wants you to understand it all, that he just doesnt know how to put it without getting people confused. Take good notes and make a sweet cheat sheet and you will do well.
Dr. Lentz is GREAT! I highly recommend him! His lectures are a little unorganized, but he is a fantastic professor. His tests are pretty easy -- he allows you to use an 8 and a half by 11 cheat sheet for all exams. He also drops your lowest grade and he curves the final grade....and he gives EC. TAKE HIM!!!
this prof is truly a joke. He's scatterbrained and doesn't have an agenda. His class is fairly easy, you attend, take the exams and you'll get an A. You just dont learn much...systematically.
Not sure how anyone could fail with the notes you can bring to the tests. He uses the clicker thing very little (waste of money). I didnt really retain much info, he is a little scatterbrained but a nice guy. Go to every class, take notes and condense those notes for the exam and you will pass. He reminds me of Richard Dreyfus.
Knows what he is teaching very well, but doesn't have a good way of communicating that to you. His lecture includes figures from the books, some of which are on the test and others are not. You never really know what not to study though, so I ended up using my book to write exam reviews. Not horrible, but very scattered in lecture.
class was hard. he was kind of confusing because he would jump all over the place. and not very helpful on how to study. get past exams. book is very confusing.
MoCell. His lectures are a little scattered and can be hard to follow. Buy the book and follow along during class. Remember the figures he shows during class. His tests are very process based so make sure you know the processes backwards and forwards.
Get it together people- stop blaming the teacher when you are too lazy to read the book! He's not confusing if you actually open the book and look over the chapters prior to class. Lentz was a great teacher and I would take his class again.
Lentz is a nice guy, but his lectures are disorganized and not very easy to understand. You never know what's going to be on the test. He is a smart guy that knows his stuff and enjoys his field, but not the best teacher. Exams were not easy, but not extremely difficult either. Somehow I got a B in his class but I swear I didn't learn very much.
He might be weird and make cocky jokes but he is nice guy. He jumps around into different topics and his wording is confusing.
He is very educated but lacks the ability to teach. Likes to jump around and often doesnt finish sentences or trails off into silence. Tests are mulitiple choice and lab is simple. Would not recommend for students who are bad at sciences
He is the coolest professor I have had this year. Funny, cool, lenient. Lets you use a cheat sheet. But don't expect it to be easy, you have to study your ass off like any bio class. But it's worth it. The best gen bio teacher at UNF. I have Aced every exam, but I am the only one I know that has. BUT TAKE HIM. Especially if you are a cell bio major
He's a pretty good professor. Although he doesn't explain things very well, he does try to make everyone understand. He'll put up videos and other things. He'll let you use a cheat sheet for the exams :D
Fantastic professor. This class is mostly full of freshman however, which helps explain the comments. You work for your grade, It isn't handed to you. Material can be difficult but very attainable with his office hours and the text book.
Will need to work hard in order to recieve a passing grade. Cool professor, just not the best teacher. Lets yuse a cheat sheet on every test, including the final. Uses Mastering Biology, all answers are on google and in the textbook chapter footnotes. Manageable if you have alot of time to devote to studying and reading.
Th test are difficult. His test are base on concepts so understand them and you should be fine. He lets you bring a cheat sheet and curve your grade. Probably your best choice for gen bio. If you suck at biology this class is not for you. Go to class, study, and study some more.
I rearranged my entire schedule to get into Professor Lentz class. He reads off a powerpoint ( posted online) rambles often. He often goes over material that is not on the test but he just wants to talk about it. He allows a cheat sheet on every exam even final. I had a 73% after calculating lab and grade. After curve I had B. Take for curve!!
Professor Lentz is suppose to be one of the best Bio professors, but he is not! He doesn't respond to any issues you have. He reads straight from the powerpoint and is very confusing. Tests and assignments are confusing. He does not care about his students so avoid him if you can!
Probably the easiest gen bio 1 class at UNF. Reads straight off the powerpoints, mastering biology is mandatory and helpful. He is very interested in the material, however the class is boring.
Going to class makes the exams harder. He's more confusing than the book, but basically reads it out loud. I stopped going and started spending that time to study the information in my textbook and my grade shot from a B to an A. If you take him: read the book. Take notes. His essay questions are almost always processes mentioned.
Easy class with simple, straight forward tests and homework. Homework is a grade booster and tests are half multiple choice half short answer.Essay questions are very broad so much can be written and points are easily obtained. Studied mainly lecture notes and got a 97.4%. Book is helpful too, but not as much as detailed lecture notes. Great guy!
I found this class very challenging. His lectures are very boring, however attending and listening can be beneficial!!!! I didn't think the material was too hard but in my opinion the exams were pretty tough. Three hw assignments that were pretty easy. Read the book!!!
Reads straight off the PowerPoints and uses some questions from the lectures on the tests. Lets you use a cheat sheet for every exam. Will give you a 100% at the end of the semester on HW if you complete all. You will HAVE to read the book and study study study but this is a gen. ed for health/med majors so you need to know your stuff anyways.
Lentz is a great teacher, however his classes can cause you to underestimate the level of prep you should do to be ready for tests. His classes are "boring" since the notes are the powerpoints that he has posted on blackboard. If you're lazy but not a duck when it comes to maybe 1 or 2 hours of studying + doing all the online work, you'll do okay.
This guy is in his own world, and he knows it. His class is not structured properly. Most other professors have a clean, structured class. Lentz posts slides from the book and babbles on about them. Can you give the students some organization please? Also, when you go to see him, he is very uptight and arrogant (I'm not exaggerating).
Dr. Lentz's lectures are interesting but can be confusing. I learned most of the material by reading the book and studying the slides. As long as you study the book, you will do fine on the exams. His exams and not too hard and his homework is an awesome grade booster. Take Lentz he's better than the other MoCell professors!
I thought Dr. Lentz was awesome! His class is extremely easy if you take the time to study. I recommend reading the chapter prior to class because it helps you understand it. This topic is sometimes dry but he is very helpful if you ever have questions! At times he even throws in real life examples to make it interesting.
His lectures consist of PowerPoints that are pictures of the figures in the textbook, and he just explains them verbally. Going to lecture doesn't help and just confuses you. Read the book and take notes, then review those notes. Also read the captions of the figures he puts on his slides. A 'B' is very doable, an 'A' needs old exams.
Lentz is great! Bio of cancer was a unique and surprisingly interesting class, and Dr. Lentz knew how to make each lectures have flow and cohesion. Follows the textbook religiously, which is very helpful, yet you DO NOT need to read the book in order to get an A! Just take good class notes! Has 4 noncumulative exams and an essay. Lenient on essays
DR. Lentz is not the best teacher at UNF. He is very unorganze and lectures only on figures from the book. I learned more in Bio 1 than in his class, however, his tests are not very hard and easy to make a B/A.
Biology is tough as it is and Lentz doesn't really help. He's a nice dude but the material isn't clear. He talks in circles. Going to lecture is more confusing than learning yourself. On the other hand, he is there if u need any questions answered. He is more than willing to talk to you and he is super excited about biology.
Lentz is a great guy, but not the best teacher. No one shows up for class because he reads directly off the power points. However, he does care about the students. He realized the class was failing and was willing to curve grades as well as our FINAL grade. Tests are tough, but STUDY MASTERING BIOLOGY. He uses some questions on these hard tests!
People complain a lot about him. His tests are straight from the book. People dont do well because they wait till a couple days before the exam to cram. If you read the book and look through the lectures, you will definitely get an A. People are just lazy in his class. Its a gen ed class so a lot of complaining is expected.
You do not need to buy the textbook but you need to buy mastering biology. Mastering biology may only be 10% of your grade but do it! It helps! Lentz can be unclear at times but if you come to class and at least try to pay attention, it helps. A lot of the test comes from mastering biology so if you do this you are good to go!
Get ready to self-teach. Lectures aren't too helpful, and you have to learn on your own. Tests aren't hard, but you have to read the book. He does read off the powerpoint, but once you get into genetics and gene expression, his explanations are helpful and necessary to understanding the material. Online quizzes + reading passing
He was a great teacher. Took him for Bio 1. He just reads off the power points and class in optional. Just study the powerpoints and read the chapters and you will pass. He also lets you have a cheat sheet for the tests but don't over think that. Make sure you read! Lectures were boring but he has some good stories throughout the semester!
You will understand the material by the end.
Overall he is a good professor. He does read off PowerPoints so class isn't essential but he offers extra credit for each test and if you do the homework's and read you'll be fine.
Professor Lentz is a great professor for General Biology I. There's a few tests, but he lets you use cheat sheets- a piece of paper with notes on it. He also gives a lot of extra credit.
Lets gen bio 1 have a cheat sheet on every test. Lecture can be boring so 20 out of 250 kids go because he reads off the power points that are posted online. Wasnt very helpful when I went to his office hours but he gives you a chance for extra credit.
Plenty of extra credit. You don't have to be in every lecture, but they are very helpful.
Very boring lectures, still not quite sure where he gets his test questions from. Test do not relate to his lectures. Test very difficult, provides lots of extra credit. studied 15-20 hours per WEEK and was clueless on some of the test due to questions not pertaining to material assigned.
Overall, a good teacher. There are plenty of opportunities for extra credit, so don't stress if you aren't the best at biology. Tests were kinda challenging ( I didn't study very hard in the first place), nothing too out there though. Some homework questions were similar to test ones. I would recommend him!
Take him for Sophomore Seminar. Just do it, online isnt easier and hes very helpful.
Had him for mocell. PowerPoints are 100 pages with 90% of just diagrams. Didn't buy the textbook at first but had to later bc his lectures are not helpful at all. Barely anyone goes to class anymore. Goes off topic and hard to know what to study for the exams. 3 essay hw assignments and no quizzes. I will say he was easy for soph. seminar though
Lectures are long and boring but not mandatory. Don't buy the book you won't need it, however you do need to buy an access code. You can have a cheat sheet for the tests but they are IMPOSSIBLE. I have NO idea where he gets test questions from.
I took Michael Lentz during my first fall semester at UNF and absolutely loved him as a professor! He is lecture heavy, but he offers up so much extra credit for Gen Bio 1 that you can easily boost your grade! I would definitely recommend him!
Be prepared to teach yourself. He is a great guy but a very boring lecturer. He reads straight off the powerpoint. Be prepared to do a lot of studying for his class.
I hated this class. Prof Lentz managed to take topics I understood from previous Bio classes and confuse me on them. You can pass the class teaching yourself and without going to any. Our SI teacher was awesome and should teach the class instead. Only pluses to this class were getting Dr. Bruno for lab and having a notes sheet for each test.
Absolutely hated this class. He doesn't upload any grades until after finals besides exam grades. Exams are super difficult, but he allows one paper for notes during the exam. Gives out A LOT of extra credit, if you do it you will pass.
Powerpoints on canvas of every chapter, but lectures hardly help. Will go over everything on the slides and not really go into much depth and detail that makes attending lecture worthwhile. Also tends to ramble on about material that he'll later say will not be included on the test. He's a good guy who loves what he teaches, but hard to sit through
If I could give this teacher a 0/5 I would, he is by far the absolute worst professor I have ever had at UNF when he grades your free-response he doesn't even tell you what you did wrong except maybe writing 3 or four words, he's extremely picky about what he wants and if you don't word it or say it the way he wants it your wrong. Don't take him.
His lectures made a lot of sense and he posted the powerpoints for them so it was easy to follow along. I didn't buy the textbook and didn't need it to pass because he covered everything well. He also seemed to like the mocell and wasn't focused entirely on details. Had 4 homework assignment and chapter quizzes. Tests were open-book and short resp.
Quizzes were a bit difficult and it was hard to know what to expect on them, but written exams and assignments were very clear and relevant to what was being learned. He was very helpful with questions/concerns, too.
He only bases grades on quizzes. They were 10 multiple choice questions every week and you could only take it once. So if you did poorly you could not retake it. He offers extra credit but you have to purchase the textbook and the lectures and chapters were extremely long.
Personally, it was hard to take biology online fall 2020, the lectures were very well detailed but it was hard for me to retain. Take good notes it will help you greatly for the quizzes, there is only a midterm and exam. If you are decent at bio he is a good professor because his quizzes are straightforward, and I recommend S.I. (which I didn't do)
Lentz reads from the book no matter what class you take with him. If you learn well by reading a book, you will succeed in his class and can basically skip coming to class by reading up on your own if you have the discipline. I like this style of teaching so I don't have to show up to class, but others failed and found it challenging.
This class is super easy in the beginning but once you reach halfway into the semester it is super work intensive. There is a final scientific review paper at the end and you need to read the instructions carefully in order to pass. Lentz was not present in the class and did not respond to emails but the class is do-able without teacher assistance.
Our grade was only composed of 5 exams and 2 assignments. He never curved the exams, so basically you can only pass the class if you get a C or higher on the exams. His exams are based on textbook information, but he only lectures on his powerpoints. The powerpoints do not cover the information on the exams.
As long as you take notes on the PowerPoint and listen in class you will have the notes necessary to study. The best thing I can recommend to do to get an A in the class is just put in the time studying. Look at your notes often and you will do fine. Also, check out the chapter summary in the book after the lectures to see what he didn't cover.
His exams aren't even from his PowerPoints it's all concept questions
Not a good lecturer for people that don't already know the material
Nice guy, super smart. Not a good lecturer. If you understand the textbook you will be fine, if you don't you're SOL. Little bit more biochem than general bio. Definitely a weed out class
Our grades were based on 5 tests and 2 assignments. Despite my best efforts to take notes in the lectures, it did not provide aid in any of the tests. Unless you want to sit and memorize all the information in the book, I wouldnt take him. Though I attended all lectures, I found them useless to help me in the class
I hated this class. Lentz speaks like a textbook and I would often sit through an entire lecture and not absorb a single word he said. The exams are essay-based which means you can BS but it's rough. It's not the absolute worst class but if you can find someone better, take someone else for lecture.
Most of the low reviews are being dramatic. I didn't listen to much of the lectures he just talks from the PowerPoint. If you just write the PowerPoint down and then read the book you are going to pass the class. Theres plenty of extra credit and only a couple of assignments, then 5 tests. Ignore the other reviews mad bc it wasnt an easy A.
If you dont do well on a test/tests, theres not much opportunity to bring your grade up except for the few extra credit assignments. Some things he said that wouldnt be on the test were on the test. The only good thing was that all the tests except for the fourth one had questions from the review questions at the end of the chapters.
Class Attendance is not mandatory because his slides are only diagrams, so they are useless. The exams are textbook heavy like 180 pages per exam. The homework is time-consuming, and the grading criteria are so bad. Even if you put in a lot of effort prepare to get a barely acceptable grade. Take him at your own risk if u want to study 180 pages GL
Great teacher. I took him having already taken AP bio senior year of high school, but he just explains everything very well. Show up to lecture, read the book and do the practice questions at the end of each chapter because they are literally from there, and if not there then from your SI leader. He wants you to succeed and will give extra credit.
BUY/RENT TEXTBOOK. You probably won't even go to lecture because they are copy and paste from the book. Very knowledgable and nice. Alot of extra work to boost grade is exams don't go as planned. Exams are all essay so make sure you know all details of every chapter cuz he will make you be specific.Manageable class though to get a decent grade.
Prof Lentz is really smart and knows what he is talking about. He is so passionate, but all his lectures were very boring and his powerpoints were all pictures. The exams were very difficult and you had no resources to study. If you did not go to lecture you had no idea what was talked about and had to rely on reading the book.
Professor Lentz is an overall great guy and professor, his teaching style was just extremely difficult for me. His tests were all essay based and super difficult. His lectures also did not help at all and were mostly pictures. you need to extensively read the txtbook to do well.
Attending lectures is pointless but if you read the textbook you will pass super easily. Exams are essay questions straight from the book and even thrown-together answers will get you some points. Don't stress trying to wake up at 9am to go listen to him, just download the book, read it, and enjoy your success.
He is a good professor but if you don't like independent learning do not take him. I loved the fact that I could just read the book and pass the class but if you need guided learning maybe take another professor. He is super nice and even if you do not know the answer, if you attempt at answering it, he gives partial credit.
Speeds through everything and everything that you learn is not on the exam. Do not take this course!
Professor Lentz used the slides provided by the textbook. He essentially read off the slides unless there was a diagram he didn't agree with then he would add a diagram he found better represented the material. Students had access to the original PowerPoint and most students just reviewed on their own.
he's an alright guy, He reads off PowerPoints simplified from the textbook, adds a bit more info, he gets off topic and then ends it off with, "that's not gonna be on the test." take other professor or don't go to his lecture at all, its all online. SI, reading the textbook and the bio lab resources they supply help way more.
Lectures weren't really that helpful, just read the textbook and do the chapter review questions for a good review of the material and testing your knowledge
Just read and read and read and read the textbook and you'll be fine. Focus on the little details. Lots of writing. He's super nice though
Professor Lentz is a nice guy but he should reconsider teaching Gen Bio. I found his lectures to be no help. I attended his office hours a couple times to look over tests and he was very bland with explanations. I am not a good test taker and this class is heavily weighed by tests. If you take this class be ready to read the text book.
I actually took this class last semester with Dr.Lentz. I have to say, for this being my first biology class, I didn't have a good experience. Im not going to lie i struggled but by the grace of god i passed with a B and an A in lab. Lab is defintely easier. Please study if you take his class, its hard to remember anything important from lecture.
THE WORST PROFESSOR AT UNF. I don't even know how he still has a job teaching. His lectures are PowerPoints of a bunch of pictures he takes directly out of the textbook and he vaguely goes over them. His exams are free response and he will find any possible way to take off points from your exam. He doesn't teach anything. Horrible professor.
Test are all written-based and they were hard if you did not know possible questions were on the exam. You basically have to read the textbook since he lectures from the book. I did not attend class for lecture and only for exams. Even in office hours, he was not very easy to talk to. I would just do well in lab to try and use that as buffer.
Dr. Lentz is a guy who's passionate about what he does, but if you aren't great at self-teaching, I would suggest finding a different professor. His lectures are little to no help and don't reflect what shows up on exams or homework assignments. The exams usually consist of specific material from the textbook, devote a lot of time to this class.
The exams are tough if you don't read the textbook cover-to-cover. Lectures are just textbook slides, so attending class is optional. Use Unstuckstudy and other study resources to prepare - it really helps.
