Should be able to have Admin. capabilities to ARC Network!
Very helpful. A vast suppository of knowledge.
Gets off subject of the class course 95% of the time.
Let's students distract him from class subject matter too easily.
very nice and clear
Appearances can be deceiving, Mr. L'Estrange gives the appearance of laid back and easy, while this may be true in his style of teaching, knowledge is what you walk away with if you focus on his intent and content of his lectures.
Good teacher, makes you feel at ease with his humor when college life is very stressful.
Excellent CIS teacher
very informative but not always about the assignments.
He's makes learning fun yet very effective. A techie guy with a good sense of humor.
His great sense of humor keeps the learning experience light and lively. Top notch!
His personality makes lectures worth it -- period! If you want to learn, learn. He's there to help. Linux is an OS, he lets you sit there and play with it. The only way to truely learn it! All while you're having a blast in his class.
Hands down one of the best teachers. His sense of humor makes even the "dry" parts of Linux fun in a way I never thought a computer course could be. Highly reccomended!
He was funny, and knew his subject..but unless you're interested...you might fall asleep.
One of the best teachers, I have erver come in contact with. Simply Amazing. Very helpful, I really enjoyed going to class everyday.
Very helpful, knows the tricks of the trade. Since the material is very boring he manages to add spice to lectures with humour. Watch it his lectures are useless if you do not study
Great teacher!! I will it more of his classes!!
Very, very, very nice teacher. He know subject very well. His lectures clear and easy to understand. I wish there will be more teacher like him!!!

Great teacher for the Cisco certification courses! Took many classes with him, enjoyed every one!

Wonderful teacher..I will take more classes from him.
Awsome Teacher, always want classes by him
he is alot of fun and vary easy going but becareful he does not stress on home work enough and its easy to forget to finish your homework.... and the test are easy one time he had the answers on the back side
We had some blast learning the dark art of hacking with an unexpected humorous personality of a genius instructor.

He is one of the worst instructors that I have ever had. He is disorganized, and doesn't appear to care how that affects his students. He is also difficult to reach either by phone or by email. I would never recommend him to anyone!

Horrible class. I try to talk to the guy and it takes days upon days to get a freakin response. I have a question for your Profesor? Why do you insist on giving a million assignments for a *1* unit class? It's ridiculous. I have talked to others with the same problem. Don't TAKE HIM. Go with another CIS profesor. STAY CLEAR! STAY AWAY!

It has been over two months since I completed his online class and still no grade. His disorganization is evident in his quizzes and tests. There are so many typos that some we not even questions anymore, all while the syllabus said if you don't use proper punctuation, he won't return your email. Also, 80% of the questions were relevant to linux
If you are a lazy student and just want to take this class for "credits," don't bother. The instructor cares about his class and will take the time to answer any of your questions, class related or home computer related.
Avoid (like the plaque) the classes this guy teaches. His online course is brutal, you can never get 100% on any of his timed quizzes because he will always put in questions that are not in the book. If you email him consider yourself lucky if he answers your question(s). When he does respond it is with annoyance and most likely will not answer you
Keep away, do not take classes from this guy. He will rip you up.
OH boy! All I have to say. These comments can not be anymore correct. He still hasnt given me a grade for Fall Semester!! I talked to Dean and she guaranteed me a grade by end of spring semester. Horrible communication and wastes your valuable time. If you could sum it up in one word its "AWFUL". If you have to do it, send follow up emails a lot!!!
absentee professor. waits until last minute to submit grades.
he is alot of fun and vary easy going but be careful. He does not stress on homework enough and it's easy to forget to finish your homework and complete quizes on time.
Notice that there are largely only two kinds of rating for him? Either they like him or they don't like him. Well, the bottom line is that he teaches the subject he undertakes to teach. He is very intelligent and show no pride which scores him big in my book. Note: I am lying avout the class code.
Note: Continuing: There should be more people like him in this world who doesn't talk bs. I like that he is like that because I am the same way. It's good to know people I can related to exist:) BTW, he is in IT, not History.
I've taken several of his classes, they are not overly difficult and the work is not overly demanding. However, you do need to do the work assigned and show up for class. He won't bug you about homework or quizzes so you have to be self-motivated. He is very knowledgeable and easy to work with if you just let him know what's up.
Low and behold. I got my grade, a C. Considering I had a 85 percent after the final, the dean has agreed to look into this issue for me. Blanchard is a great dean of CIS and told me it will be taken care of. I have screenshots of the gradebook. Most dont like him, ignore the reviews for good. His responses take forever. Grading takes forever. Avoid
I have enjoyed Mike?s classes he is very knowledgeable and enjoys teaching the classes. He wants you to learn something while you are in the class so you should show up for the classes. He is not you mother so you have to do your work. Good sense of humor and fun and very helpful if you ask for help.
The new homeless look that Mike is sporting is HOT, Hot, HOT!!!!!!
online class was rediculous... dont expect to learn much i bet inclass is better...
Awesome teacher, very helpful. Tests are kind of hard, but if you read the book you'll be okay.
Great teacher.don need to worry about any thing.Very easy tests.
Bozo intermingled XP and Vista courses and didn't fix it until 10 days after the class started. I sense that he never taught the class before and he would be damned to do more than the minimum to adapt it for an on-line format. Slow to respond to student questions and responses are curt and snarky. Even slower to grade tests and quizzes.
He is all over the lace & it was hard to take notes plus some of the topics he teaches is backwards
CCNA program, very knowledgeable about computer networking. No issues with his instructions, labs or tests. Responds well to email and off the wall real life questions. No idea what other peoples problem is other than they must be speed freaks. Emails take a few days to respond to but honestly do you need to worry about that if your ahead on hw?
Yes he can be difficult. Ya he will rip you for YOUR stupid questions, but he TEACHES. He gets his content across, and if YOU can keep up and do your HW and labs, etc, you'll be fine. Can't count the # of times been in class and STUDENTS admit to not getting their work done on time.
Not too helpful.Could care less if you pass or fail. Does not like to answer questions or give much guidance.
Great Prof. He can get off topic at times, but gets across what you need to learn.
not bad
He is the best instructor I ever had for networking classes. He is very knowledgeable and gives good examples to understand the topics. His classes are very interesting, keeps you focused and not boring at all.
He does well with his lecture classes not so with his online classes. Lack of feedback and is not fair with grading and testing policies. To ridged when it comes to retests. He would due well to offer a retest with a one grade penalty. Tests are not just for grades but to provide feedback to know how well you know the material.
L'Estrange is a great teacher. Going into learning linux I had a little knowledge but I came out with a lot. His assignments can be slightly difficult to understand but the point of them it to make you come up with your own way to solve the problem - which is a great way to learn for the real world. Quizzes are straight out of the book.
Regard my previous post for this class as well. CISC 324 is just a continuation for those who want to go more in-depth with linux. You will do more command-line based work and dealing with BASH scripting. He tells you what the scripts and other assignments need to do and you get to choose how to reach the end. Overall he's great, I recommend him.
Surely knows his stuff. Excellent technician. Once you learn his teaching style and how to use the textbook you can learn and excel. Course is mostly lecture with not much time devoted to labs so you have to do labs on your own time. Entertaining, relatively clear. Could be more helpful with students who have difficulty in some areas.
Apparently many students who take this class are whiners and crybabies. Sorry, you will actually have to study outside of class. Someday, when you grow up and get a real job, and your boss says get this done by tomorrow, maybe you'll appreciate profs like L'Estrange who made you work.
Mr. Michael L'Estrange is THE best instructor I have ever had. I would never come to a website like this for rating. But as soon as I found out about this website, I knew I had to do this and Rate him as the greatest professor! Setareh
Prof L'Estrange is a great professor. He teaches the material in-depth and well and also gives relative real-life examples. Everyone who complains about his class just doesn't want to put the time and effort that is really required. Unfortunately, you won't get far in a job or a real UC with that type of attitude.

Everyone who complains about his class just doesn't want to put the time and effort that is really required. Unfortunately, you won't get far in a job or a real UC with that type of attitude.
The material is easier to understand in this class because you learn all the needed concepts in CISN 140. So if you did well in that class you will do just fine here. More labs this time around, which is nice to be able to use real equipment that you would use in the real world.
Anyone who thinks this professor is difficult or mean simply didn't do the assignments or pay attention in class. Yes, you have to show up for each class session. Yes, you have to do the required reading. Yes, you have to do EVERY assignment. Yes, if you give him attitude he'll give it back. This is college. You get out of it what you put into it.
Prof is very very knowledgeable. I didn't know anything about Linux before taking this class. He provides lots of hands on and is willing to help if you ask questions.
Good class
Good prof
Knew nothing about Linux, great teacher! Lots of homework, but it really helps in understanding the OS. He jokes a lot but I found it pretty fun. If you really don't understand something, he is very willing to help in lab time.
His disorginization is amazing! We only had 18 hrs of lecture, which he missed 4. During the final, he gave us homework and didn't tell everyone that certain portions of the project were supposed to be different. I plan on talking to the Dean regarding his conduct during class, once grades are posted.
This professors personality put him at the top as my favorite professor yet. Ive never had a professor who could make a 4.5 hour class enjoyable and make over 60% of the class laugh EVERY class. Fun teacher to have. Very fast lectures, but to be expected from 8 week courses, if you are not afraid to ask questions he is more then willing to help.
Knows how to lecture, gives you a back story to what your about to learn and then teaches you. Has funny jokes, great attitude, & extremely helpful! Usually has an assistant to help students answer questions as he lectures. Cons: Is a little unorganized with the online portion of class, but don't worry just attend class you will get an A!
Love this guy! Everything in his lecture has a quick story or fact, makes the class so interesting. He is also very helpful, he will show you what to do with shortcuts and tips. Recommend this one, best instructor ever.
Great professor, great attitude and gives excellent lectures! However he often forgets to assign homework for the week ( for hybrid classes ) because he teaches a lot of classes. When he does remember, he assigns a ton of labs to complete. He needs to work on organizational skills a bit. Overall he is a still a great teacher!
Great professor. Knows the material and can clearly explain the concepts. A slow start to this 8-week course resulted in a furious middle with lots of labs, but it was manageable. I enjoyed the class and learned a lot about Windows security. This info is useful personally and professionally. I only wish I had more classes to take from him.
He is a funny professor. Very easy that I passed it with my eyes closed. But since I knew all the material already, class was boring. But that was just me. To me, he's awesome! Just do the work & come to class.
Allthough he is somewhat entertaining, the class syllabus is utterly hap hazzard and unorganized. The class completely lacks structure. The textbook was useless.
He didn't use syllabus. We never used our books, but spent money on them. You need to have 4 hands in order to do the job in class and take notes. The final was horrible. He used some weird language. He wanted our test to be just like his. It took me 20min just to count all the lines, so I could do the work.
Never used our books. Class isn't hard for people who know basics in computers. Final is pretty hard, some things he doesn't even go over. He's a picky grader with homework.
This professor does not help at all, the homework site he has is not even on the website we use to upload the homework assignments on, it really confuses me.He does not use the book at all, and part of points are based on having the book. Doesn't make sense to me at all. I would not recommend this teacher for this class. DONT TAKE!!!
This class is hard to follow. If you have no knowledge about computers then you should not even think about taking this class. I've have never failed a class or have gotten anything less than a B. I'd be lucky if I get a C in this class because he is so particular about grading. You have to own a computer or have access to one every single day.
This guy is a great computer science professor, he is hard but helpful. In this class you will learn the material and many off topic information.
He does not respond to email until days later. not very helpful at all I would not recommend anyone to take his class
Good class interaction and lectures. He is interested in you learning the subject not just the text book stuff. One of the better CISC professors at ARC. If you need help he is very approachable.
Professor L'Estrange is not the one who should be teaching this class. He is covering the material very quickly assuming that you already know a lot about Linux. Half of the time he is talking about his personal life amusing the class. When it comes to his final exam -- you will not be amused at all. It's brutal!
He is a poor teacher, he is amusing but when it comes to teaching the class, he is terrible, goes a mile a minute and keeps saying hurry, hurry you have 5 seconds to try to keep up with him or is three steps ahead and he doesn't stop to try to help. What a nightmare he was.
He really knows what he teaches. If you ask him, he explains. Gives super good examples. And you can't get bored. In one class, he had two complains: one that he talks too fast and one that he talks too slow.
He is cool and funny. Very easy going. It's a pretty easy and basic class if you are familiar with computers. Class goes slow when you have to wait around for everyone to catch up with the material. He seemed helpful for those people who fell behind. He is really sarcastic and offensive to some but I thought he was funny
Great class and easy to pass if you show up and do the assignments. He is really funny and usually only talks off task during the time students are catching up. He is helpful if you fall behind as well. The directions are clear to understand but he will say them fast so you have to pay attention. Perfect class I would recommend taking.
Great teacher
Professor L'Estrange's anecdotes are great! He delivers a huge amount of information. Plan on a ton of reading in a short period of time because it's all crammed into 8 weeks. Do the Labs, it will make a huge difference. The first of four classes.
Professor L'Estrange has a wealth of experience that he shares. Loved hearing the stories from the past because he relates it to what's current! Be ready for your brain to hurt from a ton of information in a short period of time. This was the most intense class of the four in the series. Do the Labs, it will make a huge difference.
If you've taken CISN 140 and 141, this will seem much easier. A ton of reading in a short period of time. The packet tracer exams are tough. Make sure you do the labs. A great class for those who want to learn Cisco Networking. Geeked-out on the lectures. Loved the class.
Best teacher at the school. He knows the material and he is very smart. Would definitely take a course taught by him again.
He really doesn't teach. 120 pages of ppt in 40 minutes. Its really hard to keep up with him.
Good teacher, good feedback, answers questions respectfully and thoroughly.
take class with him only If you have a good background on the subject. He's not available at his office, and does not reply to emails promptly. actually he is among the poorest teacher I have ever met at ARC. I really don't understand why such people are allowed to teach at ARC
I don't recommend this professor for those who people who do not have information about computer because he always makes hurry. you don't understand what he is talking about he gets off topic sometimes. I is not fair for teaching such hard classes he is good for schools. NOT FOR COLLEGE.
One of my fav teachers at ARC. Teaches fast, which I like. He does get off topic from time to time, but I was still able to learn everything I needed to pass the class. I'd take any of the classes he teaches
He gets sidetracked a lot sure his jokes are funny and all but gosh...
This professor is very funny and always tells interesting stories. Guess it's good? Think again. The most of the class time he was telling us jokes and stories Also, and the end of semester we had the due right before the final exam for the last 3 or 4 quizzes. He deleted the entire canvas course at the morning, like 10 hours before the final.
If you want to learn! Look for a different professor. He will go through his lectures very quick and you will not be able to get anything from it. He doesnt care if you learn it or not.
goodluck
The one teacher who actually taught us stuff rather than saying "Here is a book, now go read it and do pages XYZ." Made learning linux fun. Would go off on stories sometimes, but nothing too bad.
He is one of my favorite teachers of all time. He has made learning GNU/Linux fun, truly a wizard. I have since given up the bloated operating system known as windows and converted fully to GNU/Linux. As I type this I can feel the freedom flow within me. I feel awoken, L'Estrange has shown me the path to enlightenment, GNU/Linux is the vessel.
There is not enough space to contain all I have to say, this class has activated my autism (Asperger's syndrome specifically) beyond belief. I do every assignment in class with excitement. I dread the moment class ends, I wish I could stay for ever and learn more and more about GNU/Linux. I love this class because I don't NEED to talk to anyone.
While sometimes condescending and mocking towards students, he is not who I have an issue with. Rather, the issue is the "instructional aid" who plagues the back of the class with a disruptive phone, incredibly rude behavior, and loudly answering obviously rhetorical questions meant for the students. Her presence ruins the classroom atmosphere.
Lestrange is an awesome teacher. He teaches you stuff in class that the text book does not teach. The only thing that is hard is that he doesn't explain when homework is due all the time so make sure you don't miss a class. He assigns work randomly. Besides that he is hilarious and easy to learn from.
very interesting professor.
no due date for homework
I took this class with him. He dose not answer your question not ready for teaching .his lectures goes out of lecture all the time. He can read a story very well but not able to teach or students are not able to catch anything from him. Do I want take any class naver naver .
Professor L'Estrange used NetAcad for the linux course content, which is pretty good; it's also free for the course students. He lectures 2x/week and has the recordings posted on the course site for later viewing. Bash scripting takes up the 1st half of the course, then you get into other administrative-type monitoring tasks. no installs/config.
Maybe its because its virtual now but I hate this class. The guy hasnt responded to a single email Ive sent all year asking questions. Hes given us chapter Quizzes that dont work. And recently hes not shown up to like our past 5 zoom lectures. Then when hes in the lecture he spends half the time rambling about random stuff. So yeah not good
He definitely wasn't very responsive, but this guy gets credit for taking the time to actually lead lectures. He knows the subject well, is fun to listen to, and provides very relevant information (helped me understand some principles that other classes failed to teach). Learned a lot in his class, but it there is VERY little hand holding.
Unorganized and no one knows the due dates, take someone else.
take anyone else. the syllabus is an example of a syllabus that doesn't apply to the class. So rude when asked a question of any kind. will rant about hatred for professors he works with and past or current students struggles. due dates, how to submit assignments, tests are a guessing game that you usually lose. quizzes on material never covered.
No one knows what they're doing. The assignments are copied online. Take Kaina instead. Complete mess of a class. Extremely hard for a 1 unit class.
The work he's assigning is so hard. Can't find anything online either, so stressful.
Feels like the work he's giving us is difficult. The zoom lectures he put up just ramble about useless nonsense we don't need in these times.
This is the most work I have ever had to do for a class in college. It would take me on average 10-12 hours a week to finish the work. FOR A ONE CREDIT CLASS!! Two 2.5hr lectures every week. Doesn't answer questions. The final had material we never covered in class. I had a 4.0 going into this semester and now I do not. Thanks Mr. Lestrange!
I've emailed him for help on the assignments but it seems like he doesn't know either or he doesn't want to explain himself clear. He sends vague responses that provide no help.
Very disgusting class experience! it is for the students who have linux experience student to study, not entrance. The worst professor in the college district! He maybe knowledgable in linux, but he doesn't know how to teach and how to arrange the class. Unorganized all things. Assignments, quizzes, lab assignment s, all different due dates!
Professor's zoom lectures are ok. He is good at Linux knowledge but not organization of the class. All stuff are on NetAcad not canvas. The quizzes and lab assignments' due date were always different time, no rules to follow. His lab assignments like puzzle to hunt something which need a lot of time to finish. Assignments are more than 4-5 units.
This teacher has way to much issues with his computer for being a computer science teacher & blames it on Zoom. Other teachers/students utilize this tool with no issues. He disrespects his students if you ask questions . One of the worst teachers I have taken. If you take him, learn some basic info on the content before enrolling. Good luck.
Pay close attention to his recorded lectures, that might help you more than he does. He will give vague responses confusing you more. He is very good with this area but no skills at all to teach to his students. Be positive by doing the work, ask other students if you can for help. Class isn't too hard overall just the teacher is horrible.
The Good - professor has an incredible knack for breaking things down to a level anyone can understand. You will learn a lot. The Bad - WAY too much homework for a 1 unit course. The Ugly - this experience made me to decide to never take a class again if it doesn't directly help me with my job. As a believer in lifelong learning, that's a shame!
Does not use Canvas. Have to check multiple times a week to see if more assignments were added, took 2 weeks to figure that out and missed multiple assignments. Must watch all lectures over and over and take notes to understand assignments. Terrible if you have questions. Responses over email are vague and unhelpful. You will be on your own.
Some of my assignments he refused to grade, dropping my final grade to a C. I've reached out to the Dean regarding this. Abusive when asked for help, both by email and verbally. THIS IS A 1 UNIT CLASS! I've done less work in 4 unit accounting classes.
Not a welcoming environment for questions. No due dates or grades until the end. Lectures don’t feel structured. This might just be at the fault of CISCO but I want my money back for this class. It’s only 1 unit but feels like 4. Too many projects for how many units it’s worth. Professor is not very forgiving either.
Please do not take class with this Professor. I took CISC323 with him on campus. He is not teaching you and not helping you he is saying stories only. he just wasted my time.
Best professor ever! The class is fun, and the Assignments are simple:)
despite all of the awful reviews, Professor Lestrange is a great teacher.
So incredibly irritating when he doesn't accept late work, but also likes to play hide and seek with his due dates. Passionate and knowledgeable about computer science, but in terms of organization and structure, he's really annoying. I was really excited to learn Linux, but the mounting frustration of dealing with vague deadlines sucked eggs.
It's clear he is very knowledgeable regarding Linux, but he absolutely will not answer your questions if there's something you don't understand. It's almost like he's offended that you didn't get it the first time. Plus side, he encourages communication with classmates. Felt like half the class dropped, though. Didn't think I was gonna pass.
best teacher I have taken he is chill and explains everything clearly. He also answers every question
super chill, doesn't give any homework really, u have to read the online text book, but it is not necessary bc of how indpeth his love lectures are.
Simple Professor. Just show up and do the assignments and you'll have no problem getting a good grade. He seems tough at first, but you will warm up to him. The only big assignment was a final exam that was pretty straightforward. I recommend him if you don't mind going in person for this type of class.
Initially he seemed a bit standoffish, but when you get around to talking to him, he's actually chill and clearly wants to educate his students for a career in IT with the nature of his assignments. Linux can be a rough learning curve for some people - pay attention to the lectures and show up in person for lab time so he can help you.
The best professor ever.
The professor has an incredible knack for explaining complex topics, but the course workload is excessive for a 1-unit class. Unstuckstudy proved helpful for studying Linux concepts.
Professor L'Estrange is an exceptional professor. He's going to teach you what's important to know about the field of Information Technology. He's very real about what's happening in the field and what you need to do to succeed. But most importantly, he's there to support you every step of the way. His knowledge is as impressive as his humor!
One of the most funniest Professors I have ever had. Get ready to be laughing your face off out of nowhere! The new NetaCad website that the class uses is a bit difficult to navigate because it is still new, but once you get used to it, you'll be chilling. The finals was a bit complex terminal work, but my buddy helped me out with the CLI commands.
Great professor funny guy tells a lot of jokes. Ask all the questions you have in person very hard to get to when class is out. But overall very helpful and will answer all your questions.
Almost all material pertaining to the class, including the syllabus, was badly AI generated. The only material that wasn't AI were external links containing material written by other people. I paid money for this class expecting to be taught by a professor, not an AI generator. Students who want to learn deserve more respect than this.
Before taking this class, I've heard various rumors about Professor L'Estrange about his method of teaching and ethic. So far in my experience, he seems like a very understanding and unique teacher. He is funny, charismatic, fair, and approachable for not only guidance with schoolwork, but also for conversations. Hope to take more classes with him
