Prof. Lewis is a good guy. Lots of real world experience, but his lectures do not fully apply to the exams. The texted used for the class is dull. Overall if you put in the work and try to understand the material is easy
This class is easy if you go to every class. There is a quiz every class but no midterms. This is not a class of numbers even though it is Acct. This is a discussion class and very little if any math is involved.
Good lectures, and create sense of style. Love this class! Hope I can hang out with him after I graduate.
His class is pretty easy and he will try and act like he is a bad A on the first day but he is pretty lenient. My problem is he doesn't teach anything honestly most people like him because of that and if you aren't an accounting major he's a great person to take it from. If you are interested in accounting take someone else.
Honestly I really like Lewis. Sure on the first day of class he tries to make it sound like he is super strict but honestly he is a pretty chill guy. Great lectures, answers all my questions clearly and he knows his stuff. I will be taking 3600 from him because I love his style of teaching
Best Professor I had at the U!
Great class. If you go to every class and read the articles you will get a good grade. No midterms or final. Quiz every week (not hard if you read) and final paper (not hard if you go to class and take some notes)
If you go to the U, and you are taking accounting, then you better be taking it with Michael Lewis. Such an amazing professor, makes accounting fun in "grandmother language!"
Michael is a great professor. OI liked that he applied what we were learning to real word situations. The class is pretty easy if you attend class and keep up on the homework
He is a great professor, one of the best I have had. Explains things very clearly. He will try to come across as a hardass but hes a really good guy.
Worst professor i've had in a long time. Doesn't care about the students. Likes to cold call people. Just likes to listen to himself talk.
It was an ok class. The thing that I did not like the most about it was that the text book was awful in explaining the concepts. Also, a lot of the grade you get depends on how well your group works. There are two group projects that take up the majority of your grade. I liked how he applied the concepts to real life.
Was a great professor. The team project was a beast but if you had a good group it was manageable!
he does a few pop quizzes and huge project at end. my favorite accounting teacher but not an easy class, he does his best to make a dry subject interesting
Very nice and cool guy was very helpful in students getting good grades and understanding the material. Wants students to be successful.
First off, so good looking. Now that's out of the way, he is literally one of the smartest guys I know. He used to work for Apple and has so much insight in the world of ACCTG. You have to take a class from him, he wants his students to be successful.
Great Proffessor! He explains everything extremely well, if you go to class and listen and take notes, you wont even need to study! I got an A on everything without studying for HOURS! take ACCT from him!
I enjoyed his classes (ACCTG 3600&5140). Huge plus is that he really cares about his students. He stayed late on Halloween to help a bunch of us with an accounting project. He wants you to understand concepts not details. Tests can sometimes touch stuff not covered in class. 3600 big group projects is difficult but rewarding.
Way easy class and professor. As long as you do the online modules each week you'll be good. There's a couple papers that are easy and interesting. And exam questions mainly come from modules.
Really showed a genuine concern for me personally in the class. Was always willing to open his schedule for additional assistance, even when I came back on the 3rd and 4th time. I love the way he teaches, he "grandmothers' things which means put them in terms that even the most lost student can have a chance to finally get it. This was my 2nd clas
Lewis was a great teacher. Tried to make it crystal clear and was always available for questions after class. The quizzes weren't too bad as long as you paid attention in class and studied a little bit.
This class was great! Lewis tries to make it interesting and understandable for all students. He really cares that you succeed, but expects you to put in the effort. You get out of class early pretty frequently too. The tests aren't too bad, but you definitely need to study for them to do well.
He is very clear and make classes enjoyable. He give good examples to apply theory into practical fields and he is very helpful. He can add extra time for consultation when we need it.
Best professor I have ever had.
Favorite professor at the U. Makes accounting fun. HUGE project, but he is always there to answer questions & it's rewarding once turned in. Tests make you think but not difficult if you come to class. Amazing personality and cares about his students. Wish he taught all the classes at the University. Need more professors like him, can't say enough!
Besides the final, we only had 5 tests in the class. ACCTG 3600 is also known for its group project. If you have a good group, the project is a breeze. Otherwise it is the fastest two months you ever had.
Best accounting professor i have ever had. Teaches so clearly its hard not to understand. Prepares you exactly for his tests. Always VERY clear expectations. He writes the department final so you have a leg up on other classes. Gives a massive group project but is always willing to go over questions and help you fix things. Highly recommend him.
I had Lewis for 3600 and for this class. He is a great professor! Really cares about the topic and is willing to help. There is a 20 or so hour project that is fairly difficult but he helps you as much as you need. TAKE THIS CLASS with him. Especially if you've taken 3600 and know how he teaches. Final is 5 essay questions. he sets you up for it.
Professor Lewis is an excellent teacher who really knows his stuff. Make sure you pick a good group as the majority of the class is built around the Acc Group Project. If you pick a good group, do the homework, and stay on top of the project, the class will be very straight forward and fairly easy. DON't Slack, pick a bad group, or procrastinate!
The class was fairly hard and very fast paced, but he's a great professor and will help you. He likes to randomly call on students to give answers - especially people who wear BYU blue! It does help you learn, though. He explains everything in an easy to understand way. Definitely take this class from him! He's super funny and makes it fun.
Lewis will try to scare you the first day. He eases into the chillest dude ever the day after. This course is very important for business and he teaches it Grandma Style so you can understand. You have to do the HW and you have a weekly quiz, midterm, final. I can't say how happy I was to get this teacher. Definitely THE accounting teacher.
Lewis really knows his stuff, and he really wants you to know it too. His lectures are interesting and he's always open for questions--even the "dumb" ones. Quizzes and tests get tricky, but as long as you've got a good group for the big project and stay on top of it, the class isn't too bad and you learn a lot.
So glad I took this class! I now have a clear & educated understanding of what accounting is and I learned a lot! Professor Lewis puts on a tough act to scare away anyone who isn't going to take this class seriously. Behind his tough guy appearance, he is a nice guy who truly cares about you as a student and wants you to succeed.
Take Michael Lewis for Accounting, you won't regret it. He's great! There's no curving on grades so what you see is what you get. Make sure you come to class and take notes, that is the best way to prepare for quiz & Final. There's a group project that is a big part of your grade. Make sure you pick a group that can WORK & get things done.
Lewis is great at helping you with any problems you run into. He knows the subject well which is great for the huge project he gives you. The semester long project requires a lot of hard work and time to complete so beware.
Lewis really cares about your success, so don't be afraid to take his class. I'm glad that I got Lewis as a professor because he really wants you to learn the material. He's a professor that will be life changing in your college experience. Honestly planing to take him for most of my accounting classes. One thing though. DONT CHEAT!!! He'll get u!
Mike is a great teacher. I plan to take as many classes as possible with him. Like others said. DO NOT CHEAT. He is a great auditor and ll catch you if you cheat. There were a few students in the class that were removed from the class each test. Mike has a way of getting to students. He is very strict but most students really like him. Great class!
Lewis expects you to earn your grade and learn something useful along the way. He is a tough grader; he will not drop quizzes or curve the class. But he is fair. My only complaint is that he wasn't great at explaining concepts to students who did not understand. I only did well because I had already taken two other accounting classes at SLCC.
Read each chapter before class because he would call someone to answer question from our textbook. if you read text book and do the online homework and project, you will easy to pass. Would love to take his 5140 class!!!!
Great teacher. He is on of the best at the U. He has good experiences and is helpful with any questions.
Tremendous professor. Very clear and concise with lectures. Most classes are let out early because he's straight to the point and explains everything so clearly. The class isn't hard, he just makes you put forth the effort to earn your grade. The most important thing is finding a good partner for the massive project. Do that and you'll be fine.
Just don't like him because he just saw the result even if your group member did nothing. And some grades he gave are ridiculous.
You need to read the book by yourself and he will test many stuff he did not teach in class.
I took Lewis for 3600 and loved it! Took him for 5140, and completely different story. He expects more from the students which is reasonable, but he didn't teach anything. You had to read the chapters before class and get tested before he even taught it. His lectures were discussion. I wish he taught the material, because your grade depends on it.
I did not like him. His teaching style is to be intimidating and has no problem embarrassing students in class. Not very helpful during office hours. Not a nice guy.
His grading criteria needs a lot of work and his teaching style just doesn't work for what he tests on. Often the quizzes are much more in depth than what he or the textbook taught. The final project also has ridiculous expectations for even a decent grade (80+ hours of work is required, and is expensive to print). Not a good professor overall.
Michael was an amazing teacher that was passionate about what he taught. I took his 3600 and 5000 class and worked my butt off for my grade but would take it again. His projects prepare you for the tests and quizzes which was also beneficial. Don't expect to get by without putting in the time and effort.
The group project was extremely difficult. Do not put it off! Ask for help early in the semester. Mr. Lewis cares about his students and wants them to pass. That does not mean he is easy.
Honestly, I went into this class thinking it was going to be extremely hard. Everyone says Lewis is really bad. I thought this class was difficult in some aspects (multiple choice quizzes are subjective), etc. If you go to his lectures though and understand what he is saying, mixed with the book, you are fine. I really enjoyed the class.
Online class is pretty good. I did not get the textbook and did not need it. If you listen to the lectures online it's possible to get 100% on every quiz. Homework from Cengage is not very relevant. Hardest part of the class was the group project which is very time consuming. Between 80 and 100 hours. Final is not too hard if you follow study guide
I've taken almost every Accounting class from Lewis and I've enjoyed him every time. He's good at explaining difficult concepts in an easy to understand way. He does cold call on people all the time though, so be prepared. The group project isn't too bad, but it honestly does take 80hrs to do - not an exaggeration!
Group project is the meat of the class so pick a good group. The final is all based on the quizzes that you take during the semester. You don't need to show up for class after the project has been turned in if you are familiar with the Finance 3040 course because he just reviews stuff from that course. Good guy.
Prof Lewis is a good overall teacher and knows what he's talking about. Be sure to attend class as he will often do pop quizzes or pop in-class assignments to penalize those who don't come. I used the book once for a project, and only used two pages for the tables. Get ready for boring lectures, and hearing him tell you to grandmother language it.
Lewis, well the man can talk about the same thing in a loop for hours. Make sure to record his lectures and replay them periodically each night to cure insomnia. Generally speaking the class is poorly organized (He has you memorize arbitrary data from slides like the specific number of some accounting code in IFRS). Enjoy the tax code grind.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. Not for the enormous project, but for the Cengage homework. I spent hours and hours trying to complete this stupid homework.
He is a great guy! Super relatable and easy to understand. He always has a project within his class that really helps you learn. He is honest about the workload, but he walks you through it and gives you a good time line on what should be done by a certain time.
Michael is the best teacher I have had so far. He made me feel like I could actually go into accounting again. I was really discouraged at first but he just makes people feel smart and like we know what we are doing. There is a group project which takes a lot of time but it has helped me learn more than any other group project or class!
He wasn't a bad professor. My big complaint is on his quizzes AND exams, you have to answer the first question before moving on, you can't skip a question. First question, submit. Second question, submit. Very dumb. I feel a lot of material that wasn't covered is also on the exams, too. So be aware of that. Make sure you read the book.
The realist professor I've ever had, very straight forward and honest. He provides you with everything you need to succeed, the group project and cengage homework does take a long time. By no means is it an easy class but attend class, take good notes, and do not procrastinate and you'll pass.
ACCTG 3600 is not an easy class and he tells you this on day one. I have NEVER had a more honest and realistic teacher. He doesn't sugarcoat and tells you how it is. Incredibly knowledgeable and a great lecturer too. The project time requirement is NO JOKE! Pick proper people, study hard, take good notes and you'll pass. He's also hilarious! Cares.
I put a lot of time and effort into this class and I saw results from that. The first half of the semester was more difficult than the second half IMO. The lectures are the same format as his 3600 class. Lots of reading and papers.
The lecture is definitely dry sometimes and you practically depend the on the textbook. You have to put in unnecessary extra time in the class because he doesn't teach any of the material during the class. You're expected to read, and then he would just kinda touch base on a few topics.
Mr. Lewis is very knowledgeable and respected. Classes aren't as planned out and organized - it's more relevant conversation-based. He's very experienced in the field.
I took this class online. He had lecture videos for every module which were clear and helpful. The group project was brutal but required for any 3600 class so there is no avoiding it. If I could do it again I would take it in person with Michael.
Michael is a great teacher, just be ready to work for the grade you want. 5 quizzes, no midterm, big group project and comprehensive final. He doesn't hand back quizzes so go review them during office hours if you want to succeed on the final. His TAs are very knowledgable as well. Attendance not mandatory but you will struggle if you miss.
His class was very boring, but he was ok grading. Didn't like the lack of dynamic in his class
Michael Lewis is a great professor. He taught this class in a way that made me actually want to learn accounting (very rare). The essay testing format forces you to truly understand the topics. Don't skip any classes
I had heard horror stories about 3600, especially about the group project. I am BEYOND GRATEFUL I took this class with Michael. I have no clue how I even passed 2600, but the way Michael explained things totally made sense to me! Go to his office hours when working on the project. He will literally spell things out for you! Super helpful!
Professor Lewis was great. He teaches difficult concepts really well and wont move on until you understand. He is always willing to help you. Go to office hours and talk to his TA's, they're very helpful. He's an awesome prof.
Lewis is an amazing professor. Hes really good at teaching and has real acctg background so he knows his stuff. His fault though is that he grades way too severely, especially the project. We dont need all that. He treats everyone like they are acctg majors when we aren't all. So If you're an acctg major, take Lewis. If not, take someone else.
You're expected to be on the same level as an accounting major which may be hard if you're not. However, he uses a lot of real world examples and explains things in "grandmother" language to make sure you understand. The group project may serve as a study guide for the quizzes and final(no multiple choice) and isn't nearly as hard as it seems.
PROCRASTINATE ON THE PROJECT & YOU'LL FAIL! 5 quizzes, not multiple choice so need to know material. Final is same, you either know or don't. Mike is smart but I didn't like how dismissive he was when you reach out to him via email (online class). I met w/him @ various times in his office for addt'l help. I have a 90.1%, waiting on final grade.
Group project is a joke worth 35% of grade, get thrown into a group w/people who may/may not care and U work your A$$ off to get a letter grade with ZERO FEEDBACK given. The practice of profs just throwing you into groups to do projects is them being lazy. Instructor is smart but he really couldn't care less. Had A- prior to the project submission
He comes across very scary but is extremely nice and willing to answer questions. The group project ruined my life, but the TAs were very helpful. Lectures were very precise and he never wasted time with busy work or unnecessary information. This class reassured me that I want to go into accounting.
Lewis has been my favorite professor at the U so far. Clear knowledge of accounting, and really dives deep past the numbers into what they really mean. Attendance is not mandatory but I would highly recommend going. It might be hard, but you'll learn a lot of useful business insight and knowledge from Lewis. No HW, but large group project.
This was an online course where each of his lecture videos were about an hour to hour and a half. He grades only on 5 things: 3 quizes and 2 project. The final project is weighing at 70% of the entire course. Its also hard to get ahold of him through email
My advice for International Accounting is to make friends with TAs, that saved my butt. You are graded against your other classmates, so the TAs compare your work with the other students in your class. I found out from a former student that it helps to know them. He gives pop quizzes sometimes, which the TAs grade as well.
The professor shows strong disrespectfulness to students.
Very long and dry lectures, only touches on basic concepts (doesn't actually teach material), graded by only a few things (exams, projects). You will hate this professor if you don't have a natural affinity to solving number problems.
The absolute best accounting teacher I have had so far. Im already enrolled in his ACCTG 5000 class next semester because I am that impressed. I had to retake 2600 several times, so I have had MULTIPLE accounting teachers, but after the semester with him I finally get it.
he takes forever to grade. it has been 2 months since our 1st presentation vid was submitted but we still don't know what score did we get for the 1st one. There are only 9 groups in this class which means it shouldn't take that long to grade
Professor Lewis had really good lectures, but some things covered on quizzes didn't seem to be explained in enough detail. Overall, if you study, watch and follow his instructions and stay on top of the huge group project, you will do just fine.
Group project, translation case. Not hard at all, just focus on the details. Online format left students without real support by this professor. 60+ page chapters, textbook is outdated. TA's graded everything but the final. Lewis gave dull pre-recorded lectures. Head of accounting, but worst of all professors at DESB. Overstated confidence. BORING.
The class and the your final grade heavily revolves around two projects, the second one being very big. If you are taking this class, you and your group members better take the projects seriously and stay consistent because if not, you can fail the class. If you don't make contributions for your group, you can also fail the class.
Professor Lewis really cares about his students. I do not like accounting and struggled in his class, but enjoyed him as a professor.
Honestly one of the better professors I have had so far at the U. He's able to take complex topics and make them more manageable which will give you a great understanding of the basics, but that's not really what's required for the quizzes. You will have to do extra work to get a great grade, but his lectures are enough to do a decent job.
