Lovaglia for All Ya
Has social problems
No Comments
tests were difficult, and lectures are extremely boring. it wasnt a good class for me.
Lectures are interesting, research project sucks ass.
Clever--gives you no choice but to go to lecture even though it's boring. Projects suck and the subject matter isn't the most interesting. He just rubs me the wrong way.
This class was one of the best I took at U of I. I would highly reccomend it. I loved the lectures, but the discussion once a week wasn't so great. Very easy to get the grade you want. If you do the work, you will get the A+ you deserve.
very entertaining professor.. tests are kinda hard.. but there's lots of easy points. good class.
Lecture was alright, makes your write a paragraph everyday to take attendance. Research paper requires a lot of work, but is doable.
Some good stuff in class, but overall, if you're just taking it for a GenEd, I'd recommend a different one. (Strongly!)
It can be an easy class if you just do the work. I was a slacker and got a B-. Lectures are interesting, but the discussions do suck ass. Go to lecture, study your notes before tests and do work for discussion and you can get an A.
Anyone who thinks tests in this class are difficult is probably lacking a brainstem. Good lectures, but pray for a good discussion TA. Points are easy. You fail and you should be removed from the gene pool.
it was an ok class, I got an A, but I was very frustrated with him and the class, he was a jerk to me outside class. The tests are pretty much straight forward vocab, and the paper is doable but considering they don't really read it its a waste of time.
Arrogant, Patronizing attitude toward students
Fall asleep during lectures all of the time..I do not like this man and can't wait for semester to be over with! he loves himself a little too much and thats alL i have to say!
Don't like this man at all....i hate class, i hate his quizes and i'm going to hate the midterm...and that is all i have to say
This class is sooo hard! If you are going to take Intro to Socio. at all, don't take it with him!!!
Lovaglia was a very interesting speaker that is clear and says exactly what is expected of you. It is a long lecture, JAM-PACKED with notes. Every lecture has a "participary interlude" which is an EASY 10 points. You do long reading at own pace. I recommend this class and I am glad I took it.
He uses examples that make it easier to remember and pay attention in lecture.
Hard to follow
Lovaglia is an excellent teacher. He was the most inspiring teacher I had at UI and I owe him a lot.
Great professor. Explains concepts very well. Lots of work though. Perhaps too much work for an intro class. But I would definitely take another class with him.
Pompous ****. He is not a bad teacher but he gives way too much work for an intro class. Many other intro to sociology teachers are much easier and helpful. They are easier in the sense that they are not making the class harder than it needs to be. This man thinks that he knows more than he does
He's a good professor, but he's still rife for parody.
Not only was he a great teacher, he is a great Adviser! Recommended! Really nice and knows what he is talking about.
Weird Guy, Good Class
Very helpful professor and advisor.
He grades work off of his opinion and thoughts at the time rather than of how much work goes into it. He's good at what he does, but that's about it.
he was not very helpful, and very full of himself. his ideas on studying are totally unrealistic and some of his test questions are far to detailed for an intro class.
Good teacher, Interesting Lectures, Easy Points during lecture
No Comments
Hes a happy guy who is passionate about his work. However, there is no curve and his tests are pretty difficult. Just make sure to go to lecture.
he is pretty cocky, but overall a pretty good guy, his test are very tough.
Guy knows his stuff... if you do the work and go to lecture, it shouldn't be much of a struggle
He loves what he does and is very down to earth. Glad I could experience his lectures.
Umm... He's funny sometimes... but i really can't say this class is at all easy.. If it wasn't for the TA's i'd have no chance
i would recomend his class to others
Bland, boring, and occasionally morbid. Impossible to listen and jot notes down at the same time. Tests are not as hard as they could be.
Prof. Lovaglia makes this subject very interesting for almost everyone! Although the tests aren't exactly easy..if you attend lectures(write down the date and the lecture #)and know vocab. you should be golden!
not too bad. Really quirky guy
i was bored, discussion saved my grade for sure
I think it's really funny reading the Intro comments. I have him in an upper-level (Select Topics: Leadership) and I love the class. Obviously, if you don't clean or attend class, you'll have no idea as to what's going on. What are you in college for if you can't manage that. If you want to know Social Psychology -- good person to learn from.
Class is fairly easy. Lots of things to be studied but if you do the work you'll get a good grade. Go to all of the lectures and take good notes. Definately study vocab for the tests. If you listen to him and do the studying methods he reccommends you'll do great!
Really stupid test questions. Boo.
Many of Dr. L's points and examples were unhelpful to me.
OMGISHHHH such a funnn class :)
Great teacher who loves what he teaches. He is also funny and the tests aren't too hard if you know the bold in the textbook.
He's a good teacher. His teaching assistants aren't very good though. as long as you study the chapters on your own Dr. Lovaglia is a very good teacher. He is engaging, humorous, and interesting.
Soooo much in lecture participation required. Almost every lecture has an in-class assignment by yourself or with a group. Read the book and take good notes, and it is pretty easy. A lot of studying required. And pay attention in lecture, my TA was absolutely useless.
He's a great professor and loves what he teaches. If you read the book the tests will be easy and you get lots of points for going to lectures.
World class scholar, and excellent teacher. Definitely a genius, but clear and understandable. Fun professor and class.
Lectures can be boring at time, but as long as you write down whats on the overhead and read every chapter assigned in the book you are guaranteed an A. Gives in lecture assignments and discussion requires attendance and participation every week. Professor really wants you to do well.
This professor does not live up to the expectations he puts forth for students. He has calculated grade wrong numerous times and is not up front about what is even graded until the semester is over. This graduate seminar class was outdated and not a safe learning environment. The information was not helpful for future scholarship.
Enthusiastic. Attend lectures and you have nearly everything you need to know. Not too fond of the group projects. Tests are easy if you take notes how he tells you to and take notes during lecture. Class overall was pretty entertaining and he related real life to what we were talking about.
Lovaglia is one of my favorite professors. He's so entertaining and enthusiastic. You need to attend lectures if you want to do well in his class. He does in lecture assignments and provides extra credit in the lectures. He wants all of his students to get an A, but he makes them earn it. Be prepared to work!
He's amazing! My favorite professor by far. Very clear with information, lecture notes are clear concise and to the point. Tests are straight from the textbook notes, and lectures. He says "i want all of you to receive an A". In a nut shell he wants to hand you an A! High recommend him i'm going to miss hiM!
I love him! he's just so funny. people only whine about the class because they are freshman. but as a junior i already had an appreciating for sociology and he was just fun
This class is really easy. Just go to lectures and read and you will get an A.
Professor Lovaglia is nice but, his lectures are boring. Notes are helpful for the exams so it's good to attend lectures even though it's boring! and you get most of the time in-class homework that you have to do. His tests questions are based on textbooks/lectures, but most of questions aren't about the materials that you really have to know.
Lovaglia was really fun and entertaining, for the most part. Some of his lectures could get a little boring, but they're definitely worth going to. He has a lot of in-class assignments and group projects, which I didn't really enjoy, but my grade enjoyed never having missed one. It's clear that he's passionate for Sociology, which is great.
Go to lectures, you earn easy points for in class assignments even though you want to sleep through the entire thing its so boring. and READ THE BOOK. Most of his test questions coming from definitions and statistics in the book!
The social psych of leadership class was one of the best experiences I've had, and was a lot of fun. There is group work, and it serves a very good learning point, I recommend every class with him you can take!
Lovaglia is a very gifted sociologist. He's even a contributor in the textbook used in class. He presents concepts different from the textbook in class, but you are required to turn in notes for each chapter. Attend lectures, you never know when you will have an in-class assignment. Overall a good class, but boring at times.
Good class with good content. There are times where there is a lot of reading required in a short time. Also, not much direction given on how assignments will be graded. Overall a good class and a good professor.
great teacher. class is easy if you take notes on the book and lectures. study a bit and you'll get an a. go to lectures for easy points, he usually makes them interesting
So easy. If you do all the notes that are required then you really don't even need to read the book. The grade you get on the midterm hardly matters in the long run as long as you do well on the final & half the questions on the final are directly off the midterm. EASY. if you don't get an A then you didn't try.
He's entertaining, informative and an all around great professor. Considering his age, he is extraordinarily energetic, which makes most lectures highly enjoyable. I had him for intro to soc and absolutely loved it. The exams aren't difficult if you can memorize terms.
Had him for Intro to Social Psych online. Awesome professor. Lots of group in class activities. WATCH the lectures online and take notes and you;ll pass the exams. He wants you to get an A and if you watch the lectures you will get one
I cant stand him lecturing, but he goes into great depth. He is also very repetitive and wants everyone to do well. He is very into what he is teaching and is very knowledgeable. The in lecture assignments are tedious but helpful. And book notes are required to be turned in every week and then graded. Which is annoying and time consuming
Great professor! Loved the class so much
Professor Lovaglia has very interesting lectures, you have to go to attend because sometimes there is random assignments he will give in lecture. Otherwise the only thing you have to worry about assignment wise is taking notes that are graded weekly, or else you can hold off studying until before the midterm and final.
He is very good at lecturing, but most of the things you need to know are in the book. It takes a lot of out of class time reading and taking notes and you have to constantly be studying for his class in order to get an A. It's good to go to lecture because he will sometimes have in lecture assignments for extra credit and to manage attendance.
Best professor in Iowa by far. Interesting, well prepared and genuinely cares whether you learn or not. Always available for help in office hrs and prompt to email back. If he sees that you're interested in the subject, he'll help you prepare for your future.
It's worth just showing up one day just to check it out.
"I want every student in this class to get an A" -Lovaglia at every lecture. He genuinely cares about the subject and wants his students to do well in the class. Its an easy A if you show up to lecture and do the chapter notes (although the chapter notes are very long and very boring). Overall, I highly recommend this professor!
He is a really friendly professor, and glad to hear students' words.
Attendance is a must. He has in lecture graded work almost every lecture. Lecture is alright. You need to read to succeed though. Just going to lectures won't do it. You must be a full participant in class work and discussions to really get a grip on the class.
Go to lecture and discussion, because there will almost always be an in-class assignment. He's kinda one of those "know it all" super educated guys, but he wants everyone in his class to succeed, so go to office hours! Also read the textbook because there will be questions on the exams, guaranteed.
He's the man! Most of the time you will want to go to lecture. Interesting class and he makes it fun. In class assignments are common and affect your grade. Tests aren't too bad if you copy and learn what's on his slides and look through the book.
Such a great guy! You can tell he is passionate about what he's talking about. MAKE SURE YOU STUDY THE TEXTBOOK FOR THE TESTS. You definitely need the book. There is also in lecture assignments so just go. You'll love his class!
i liked lectures, he was interesting. we had to take notes on chapters each week, i did those during lecture (had to go, in lecture assignments) otherwise they take a few hours. the midterm made up half of the final (and he posted the midterm online after we took it) and the review too was on the final. nice guy, really wants everyone to get an a.
Very Funny and interesting. He makes sure you participate and gives you PLENTY of opportunities to excel in his class, but you'll have to work for them.
He rants a lot, you have to go to the lectures, and the homework notes/reading always took me forever.
Professor Lovaglia was awesome! If you want an A, and put in the work, you can get one. He tells you the answers to his exams, is very lenient when assigning grades, and gives many extra credit opportunities for you to raise your grade. He generally wants everyone to get an A.
He can be funny at times. He doesn't give out a lot of A's on homework assignments. You are required to turn in your chapter notes and they take forever. Be ready to study hard for tests if you want to get an A.
He's a good teacher and his lectures are easy to follow but on assignments he only lets a select few get 100% on assignments. Notes have to be turned in every week but it's not impossible to get an A in this course.
Lovaglia made this Gen Ed so much more fun and interesting to take. I would take another lecture by him in a heartbeat. He lights up the room with laughter and is so passionate about the subject that it makes his students passionate about the subject
Good teacher, lectures can be a bit long but he tries to give about a 10 minute break during them. Wants you to get an A but you have to put in the work.
Lovaglia is a goofy guy, very animated, and fun to listen to. No grade distribution. One exam before the final, but matches exam one grade to final grade if you do better. Makes it VERY possible to get an A or even an A+. Recommendation, don't take the honors discussion if you don't want to write a research paper.
Lovaglia really wants his students to do well - he says at the beginning of the semester that his goal is all A's. Great professor, there are quite a few assignments but none are too bad.
You must study very hard for his tests. He has some trick questions and the questions are very hard in general. He wants everyone to get an A but it is very hard to do. Try his study techniques they really helped me. Take the first test very seriously pretty much your grade for the whole semester depends on it. Learned a lot tho.
Lovaglia is by far one of the best professors on campus. His lectures are interesting and keep you on the edge of your seat. In-lecture assignments impact you grade greatly so lecture attendance is mandatory if you want to pass. He turns sociology into something far more interesting than it was made out to be. 10/10 would recommend.
He made sociology 10x's harder then it needed to be. All he did was ramble during lectures. I learned from quizlets, and having access to past exams. 10/10 do NOT recommend.
Although Prof Lovaglia wants every student to earn an A, he is a very tough grader and definitely makes you work for it. Test questions can be difficult because they consist of textbook material and different material discussed during lectures. His lectures can either be entertaining or he will ramble the whole time.
Prof. made class harder than necessary. Intentionally tricky questions on exams (an entire lecture on how to read his questions, and says "90% of you will miss this even though you know it!") No curve, pays lip service to wanting everyone to get A's; few do. Extra credit is crazy amt of work. homework is harshly graded with unclear expectations.
Lovaglia often strays away from relevant content during lecture, but will test you over small statistics stated in class. I had to spend more time on my Intro to Sociology class than my harder science classes.
Prof. Lovaglia is lively in lectures which helps. Between lecture notes and notes from the readings, there is a lot of material that is covered on the final and the midterm, so it is hard to know what to study. He tends to ask very detailed questions on exams. There are also a lot of in class and in discussion assignments so make sure you show up.
keeping up with the readings, but chapters are VERY long. I learned this the hard way when I crammed & was on the verge of crying. most hardest class & i took human anatomy! Take good notes & make sure you attend class. Even tho he matches the final, make sure you do good on the midterm, i got A- on midterm, but B- on final & A's on every else A
Professor Lovaglia is an amazing professor, by far my favorite one so far. He is so passionate about what he teaches and made Sociology so interesting. He makes you think differently and apply situations to real life. 100% recommend taking a class with him! Lectures have group activities that you have to turn in at the end of class to get points.
He doesn't respect his students. He won't answer questions just says refer to the book. He gave a quiz that he said was no big deal; closed notes and book and throws three statistical questions pertaining to 2010 (7 years ago) illicit drug use. Thankfully will never have to take a class from him again.
Don't take this class online. The recorded lectures are a joke and don't deal with the rest of the class at all. Also, the online discussion grading is not clear at all: there's no rubrics for assignments, you don't know which assignments will be graded, and the calculation of a final grade makes no sense.
Not very clear on the first few exams/quizzes.
This class is useless, Strongly dislike.
Lovaglia is a hoot. He is by far the funniest professor I have had. Every class was interesting, honestly, it made me not want to skip. He is old so it's hilarious when he tries to act hip. Lectures contain a lot of important information that is probably on the test so take good notes. A LOT OF TEXTBOOK READING. If you put in the work you'll get As
He was lecture heavy about everything except Sociology. Pretty easy A but gosh going to lecture was just a drag
I really enjoyed this class. The concepts are easy to understand, but there is a lot of material to cover. I'm not sure what everyone is talking about when they say he rambles on during lectures, I enjoyed them. If you use your sociological imagination/common sense then you can easily do half the questions on his tests.
He was really funny and did in-class activities with us so it wasn't completely boring lecture type stuff. Tests are super hard and if you don't read the book AND take lecture notes you're a gonner. Interesting guy though.
Hated Intro to Sociology! Tests were way too focused on specific and unimportant details from the book. Lovaglia made this class way harder than it needed to be. That being said, he matches your midterm grade to your final grade if you do better on the final so don't waste your time studying for the midterm, but start studying for the final early.
Lovaglia was not one of my favorite professors. He made the tests unnecessarily hard and his lectures were insanely boring. There are in lecture assignments that count towards a lot of your grade so at least attend lecture although you don't really have to pay attention because everything you need to know is in the textbook.
Huge fan of Professor Lovaglia. His lectures are very interesting and gives you more than what is in the book. Still read the book, but he gives you a really good technique so you don't have to spend hours and hours reading. He has "diagnostic quizzes" before each exam, and those are harder than the actual exams, but are worth studying for.
You MUST read the textbook and attend lectures. His final exam is cumulative and grading is very hard. I studied like crazy for my final and still didn't do as well as I would've hoped because there was so much information to take in. If you do well on the midterm it really helps.
lovaglia was a good professor because his lectures were entertaining. the first two times. then, it was like he realized he didn't care about what people thought of him because he was then all business. he was very clear on what he wanted and what was going to be on tests. regular graded in class assignments (even in a lecture of 700+ people)
He cares about his students and wants them all to get "A's" but makes his tests so random and about EVERY LITTLE DETAIL of lecture, down to numbers that he just causally reads off slides and expects you to know them. Also, the TA's have no real system of grading so if you have a bad TA switch from that section because in the end it can hurt you.
Overall, professor Lovaglia seems like he wants you to succeed at first, but then the first test comes. You need to go to lecture and take notes. Little details from it are about 1/4 of tests. Make sure youre familiar with the chapters. Also, take the diagnostic quizzes SERIOUSLY. Theyre hard. He gives a few in class extra credit assignments.
I honestly felt like I learned nothing from his class. He had unrealistic expectations and was not helpful at all. He was really rude when questions were asked and also made questionable and unacceptable comments to the class. Quizzes and homework were absurd as well. Overall, I did not enjoy the class whatsoever
Most of his class is just busywork such as turning in your notes over the assigned chapters as well as two discussion classes every week. His grading scale for these is odd; only a certain number of people can receive an A, B, etc. on assignments based on who did the best work. Lectures have group activities that count for participation.
Lovaglia is a quirky professor in the best of ways. As a Junior taking this course, I was rather bored with his teaching style. He covers little to nothing is lecture and calls you his "smartest class ever". He doesn't curve, but offers tons of extra credit! Exam questions are painfully and objectively brutal, but it's a fun course.
boring lecturer, test questions have no correlation to what you read, grades notes over the readings assigned even though that info is nowhere on the test, show up to lecture and do the point things in there and then quizlet sets over his exams and you should be fine
Lovaglia pretty much assigns a chapter of reading a week, which adds up. Must go to lectures as he gives in class assignments, which are fairly easy. His diagnostic quiz's are tough, and exams are oddly specific to where there's no point. Pretty funny guy in lecture, even though they are boring. Study a lot before the exams and you'll be okay.
Professor Lovaglia is passionate about sociology. He can talk about it 24/7. Lectures can be boring (what do you expect?), but others CAN find it interesting. It is up to YOU. He does a few extra credit and lectures are straight forward. If you read, take notes, and study out of the textbook and in lectures, you will pass. P.S. avoid the balcony.
The questions on the tests have almost nothing to do with lecture or textbook information. Go to lecture anyways because there's always graded assignments. The material itself isn't hard. What makes it hard is that he doesnt specify what should be learned for the exam and It's random stats, numbers and specific facts about sociologists
I would not recommend this course. SOC1010 is fine, but this is a joke. It's based solely on group work that leads to a final paper that he gives no direction on. If you are not passionate about criminology and drug policy, don't take it. Even if it sounds interesting (which I thought) it's not worth the work and time it takes.
Professor Lovaglia is a good teacher, but this course is solely based on group projects which can be difficult. The final paper is tough and the instructions aren't clear. He assigns tons of reading but by the end of the semester I had stopped doing it, and still got a good grade. He tests on very small details that you most likely won't remember.
One of my least favorite professors at the University of Iowa. He assigns multiple chapters of the textbook per week which never correlates to the lecture. Lectures are unorganized and unavailable online. Exam questions come from a single sentence in the textbook or weren't talked about, and you are graded solely on 2 tests. Do not take this class.
I took the honors section of this, so I got Lovaglia for lecture and discussion. I really enjoy his class, but beware that you actually need to study before the first exam. He is one of those "everyone is getting an A in my class" professors. Do the work and you'll do well. Just remember to take good notes and you will be okay.
I loved Lovaglia, he is so nice and gives good lectures. Although he can ramble, the information is important and inspiring. There is reading and some papers but as long as you follow the syllabus and do the work, you will get an A. The class is easy to fall behind in because people think they know sociology, just do the readings and lectures.
Michael was a good prof. For my semester we only had pre-recorded lectures, but in those lectures he did a good job making sure the content he gives you is the same content on the test. He cares that you pass more than anything. The final was optional.
Essay quizzes required 5 paragraphs with only 26 minutes given. Chapter quizzes were random information pulled from irrelevant information in the text. lectures are 4 years old, and not once was the professor involved in the class.
Just don't. This class was one of my most difficult my freshmen year and I am a nursing major. none of what he says in lecture is even on the exam, pointless chapter reading assignments, and overall boring class. If you're looking into taking this class for an easy gen ed take it with a different prof. Funny guy though.
Great professor, really knowledgeable in his field and definitely aids his lectures with funny comments and telling hilarious stories. Did have short quizzes for attendance even though we were in a giant lecture hall.
Prof. Lovaglia was an entertaining lecturer. Sometimes, he gets off topic and starts talking about unrelated things/stories. Exams weren't extremely difficult and he offers an easy extra credit assignment for those that need it. Worst part of the class was discussions; they were boring and overall unhelpful and awkward.
I had Lovaglia for sociology, and at first, I thought this guy was putting on an act during lectures. Very charismatic and very good at articulating his speech. I don't think it's actually physically possible to be bored during his lectures unless you don't care at all. Engages with students and knows how to make everything sound interesting
The class is so pointless and dumb. The tests are actually really difficult since they are worded very badly. The class is pretty bad, but you just have to get used to his mushy brain.
He is the sweetest man I have ever encountered. Amazing Professor I would recommend to anyone. Tests and quizzes (not the essay ones though) are extremely tough for some reason, mostly because of the wording of questions. Make sure you read the textbook, your notes won't really help you.
Professor Lovaglia is an amazing person and I have nothing but respect for him. He teaches the class a bit non-traditionally, by expanding beyond the course content and relating to the real-world. He strives to support the students and prioritizes student's success. I personally loved this class and 100% recommend any class with Dr. Lovaglia.
The best Professor you can have in college. The easiest going guy there is, wants every person to finish with an A. Will add points if you are stressed, and gives very good extra credit opportunities.
Dr. Lovalglia's grading is odd, and the entire grade in the class seems to be based on two timed essays. There are very few guidelines when we get the essay topic, but we are often graded pretty harshly on specific things. He expects you to know 90% of the textbook at all times, which is ridiculous for a gen ed class. He is unintentionally funny.
Dude is chill and as long as you show up and get your work done, you will get an A.
He structures this class poorly. Lectures are useless, if you want to pass I recommend reading the text book & taking detailed notes over every chapter. Constantly gives quizzes that "aren't a big deal" randomly, exams are timed essays with vague prompts. The content isn't hard but he makes it hard to get a good grade. I got a better grade in phys.
Chill professor - just show up and do the work to get an A. unstuck AI was a big help for studying and prepping for this class.
Don't take this class if you do not have to. He makes you read so many pages of textbook pages that have nothing to do with what we were learning. We have to write like 4 timed essays in 50 minutes, and he grades that very hard. He isn't very helpful, and the lectures are so boring.
