Par excellance, extremly knowledgable, Cares a great deal about educating his students. Always willing to lend a helping hand.
A bit of work for this class, but the role playing model and Lusztig's teaching are definitely worth it. TAKE THIS CLASS.
Great, fair! What a professor is suppose to be like. Allows opinions that he dont agree with without maing you feel stupid, Just one cool dude.

Awesome, smart and cute
Really great guy. Extremely helpful during office hours. His class is demanding, but if you study, you'll do fine. His personality is great -he MAKES you listen, which is fine b/c his class is interesting. Above all, he's clear about what he wants (especially on papers), so you don't have to guess.
Awesone Professor!!!!! He is like a regular guy but for his PHD and the fact that he is a professor. Great teacher and just a cool guy, man, to discuss life with. Class is excellant anf he really cares about students both in the clas and out, makes the tutition woth it, no doubt!!!!!
very difficult class, he is rather demanding, but his class is definitely not boring. he is more than willing to answer any and all questions. i would definitely take him again!
Great and passionate teacher! He loves his subject and demands that students work hard. He acts like a hardnose at the beginning, but he really isn't. That is to say, he isn't unless you act like an idiot. Pay attention, work hard, be on time (!) and keep up with the readings. Do these things and you'll be fine. He teaches well and clearly, not to
Awesome Teacher. Take him. He does care about teaching and will work very well with you. Just dont be late to class, and show up all the time too. You won't regret taking his class. I had him twice, wish I could have taken him more
one word AWFUL. he is unfair, rude, and thinks that he is the ultimate authority on his subject.
Great teacher, don't get too intimidated
This is the worst professor that I have had at SMU. He has no respect for his students and makes it his top priority to emasculate anyone who is late to class or does not understand the subject. He prides himself on the fact that he does not give A's in his class and has unrealistic expectations.
Lusztig is the shiznit. He might be a bit intimidating for non PLSC majors, but in my experience he is very willing to go back and make sure everyone understands before moving on. Don't be weirded out when he stands with his leg on the table and speaks uncomfortably loudly.
This class is my hardest but also my favorite this semester. Lusztig is a hard ass about his expectations but his lectures are always very clear and he makes the subject really interesting. If you truly enjoy the subject then take his class, if you want an easy course this is not for you. Go to his office hours, and DONT BE LATE
This was a great class, I really enjoyed every lecture. There is a lot of talk about his unreasonable expectations, but this is completely ridiculous. He merely asks you are on time for class, turn in work on time, and proofread. I had a great experience and enjoyed how engaging the class was.
Very interesting class. He is not a bad teacher but is quite rude and unhelpful. On a number of occasions, he singled out students and made them feel dumb and incapable. I went to his office for help a couple times and he was no help at all. He also grades very tough. I would try to avoid this teacher.
Lusztig is the best teacher I've had at SMU. He is hard and doesn't taking any **** (don't be late). He expects a lot of his students, but nothing unreasonable. He is a great teacher in and out of the classroom. If you go see him, he is eager to help his students in any way he can. He made me want to be a poli sci major.
Lusztig is easily one of my favorite teachers at smu, not a blowoff class by any means, but the most interesting class I've taken thus far and his presentation of it is excellent. He cares and respects what he does and himself as a teacher and expects you to do the same. He was beyond helpful when I went to office hours, wonderful overall.
Lusztig is an awesome teacher! However, you do actually have to do work. Don't expect an easy grade, but this is college so you shouldn't even expect that anyways. He may seem intimidating in class, but if you go to office hours, he will be happy to help you with any of your assignments. A great teacher to take while at SMU!
best professor i've had at smu. this man is the reason i'm a polisci major. very tough class and he expects a lot but it's so worth it. you will learn SO much in this class and his teaching style is wonderful. just don't get too intimidated!
Without question, the highest point of my college career was this class. He is the best professor I've ever known. He runs a tight ship, but don't be intimidated by this. He cares tremendously about his students in and outside of the classroom. I cannot recommend him enough! I only wish I could take another course from him.
The man, the legend. No seriously, great professor if you actually care about political science.
He is an absolutely amazing professor. The class can be difficult, but only if you don't ask for help. He is more than willing to meet with you, even outside of office hours. Show him that you care about the class and are giving effort, and it'll help all the more. I would go so far as to say that he is my favorite professor.
He is the most helpful professor I have had. Extremely nice guy and always available for help. I thought his class was very interesting. If you're willing to work, he is a great professor to take.
He is incredibly sensitive about people coming late. Gives an icy stare that would make some girls cry during class. Take him if you enjoy...well anything besides fun and pleasantry.
Look, this guy is not a cake-walk, but I'd say that he is a must-have professor if you want to become a better student/person in life. Highly reccomend to take at least once, let either him or Kobylka be your Historical I pillar choice. and GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Establish a good relationship, you'll be much better off if you do
Easily my favorite professor at SMU. You will have to work hard, but if you put in the time you will finish this course as a stronger student in every way. He is fair and very clear, however if you screw up he will not bail you out. If you go into his office hours, he will be incredibly helpful if you meet him halfway.
Am I the only one who didn't have the same teacher as the rest of the comments? I found him to be very condescending and not helpful at all. This is the only class I've ever dropped because every time I asked a question he made me feel stupid for even asking.
Professor Lusztig is hard. If this does not digest easily, then I suggest you find some other professor. He expects a lot out of his students, and I am grateful for this. I truly felt that I grew as a student from this class, and I plan on being his student again in the future. Watch that term paper, and always attend class.
Not an easy class by any stretch of the imagination, but he is super helpful during office hours and will stop lecture to answer questions. You have to be willing to put in the work, though, but if you do, he becomes infinitely more considerate and flexible. Don't be late.
Amazing Professor. Very challenging but he makes you want to work hard and show him that you care. Very helpful outside of class. Comes off strict in the beginning but he just wants to make sure you know you are in a challenging class. Take notes on the lecture and make note of the questions he asks because they're usually on the exams. G
Best teacher ever! He really challenges you. Although this was my most difficult class by far, I was so interested and looked forward to class. As long as you go and participate in class and go to his office hours, he will try to help you to the best of his abilities.
Absolutely loved this intro class. Although my grade suffered a bit, it was mostly my fault. I did great on the papers and he guided me through them. Ultimately it was the quizzes that kept me from an A. Super easy quizzes but I didn't read like I should have. He's an amazing professor. My favorite so far. Definitely reaffirmed my love for PoliSci
I got an A+, but I had to work really hard for it. If you take this as honors, you have to write a 15 page term paper, but he breaks it down into so many pieces that you don't really think that it's that long. DO NOT use electronics in his class, or show up late. From personal experience, it is better to skip class that day than be late.
One of the hardest professors I've had.
I would without a doubt recommend Professor Lusztig's Rights and Representation class to anyone! I actually enjoyed every single class lecture because he made the material so interesting and relevant to our lives. If you are talkative and enjoy a class debate- you will enjoy it even more. Only downside is- be prepared to WORK. He expects a lot.
He'll try to scare you a lot with the term paper. He can be a tough grader, but follow his instructions VERY CLOSELY and you'll be fine. Going to his offices hours is SO important. He is so helpful there, but you have to go, don't make excuses. There a few reading quizzes that are meant to bump your grade, but they were more of a hassle than a bump
If you need to take a class and he is teaching one of the sections, TAKE HIM. He's one of the best professors I have ever had, but just know that if you want the grade, you're going to have to work for it. He's tough, but wants you to succeed. He's totally worth the work and after the class you feel great about yourself. Seriously, take Dr. Lusztig
Professor Lusztig is pretty intimidating at first, but is very helpful and kind in office hours. He can see if you're struggling and will do everything he can to clarify instructions and help you do your best. He changed his grading scheme to benefit us, and he even made the final pretty easy to compensate for the lackluster grades on the paper.
I wouldn't recommend taking this class with this professor, you have a lot of other options. Half the class will drop the class before the drop date, not the thing you'd expect for a introductory class. Expectations are unclear. Make sure you attend office hours, and have questions ready, with follow up questions. He can be very vague.
great prof!!! take his class if u want to improve your writing skills. very emphasized on writing and anylatics. SEE HIM IN OFFICE HOURS !!!! it really helps. doesn't matter what political ideology you follow, he is pretty open minded. he likes it if people have different viewpoints.
Even Lusztig's intro classes are tough. Do not take this class if you want a high GPA. His attendance policy is uncompromising: you cannot show up to class even ONE minute tardy or he will drag your GPA to the depths of hell. His exams are tough, and he has unclear grading criteria. You will feel blind and unguided as you write your paper.
He will yike on your GPA, interesting lectures though
The best professor!! Its a tough intro class but there is not a lot of outside work other than a few papers and quizzes. If you stay on top of the papers and put in the work you will have a good grade. Hes super nice and super understanding so you can see him about everything. Definitely recommend taking him and this class!
Professor Lusztig is my favorite professor at SMU! The grading criteria is very clear and he expects a lot from an intro class but more than makes up for it by dropping grades, etc. Will definitely be taking more of his classes! Dont show up late... ever
His class is my favorite class Ive ever taken. Hes also my favorite professor. He is extremely accessible and wants to help. You are graded mostly on a paper but he gives feedback and he knows exactly what he wants on the paper. Go to office hours. Go to class or you wont pass. Take his classes. I learned more from him than any teacher ever.
Professor Lusztig is a true gem. Although his class is very tough and he makes you work for a high grade, his lectures reminded me why I am interested in political science. He is one of the smartest people I have ever met and you will learn so much from him. Seriously and I cannot stress this enough, put in the work, and take his class.
This professor is a really good teacher-definitely knows his stuff. Unfortunately, I didn't care enough in the class and my grade reflects it. You get what you put in. Would definitely do over if I could. Take him if possible.
I feel like students often mistake the intellectual depth of Lusztig's lectures with poor teaching. He is an amazing professor, but his course material is very dense. Class participation is your chance to show him you've read; asking questions shows that you've thought critically, which reflects in his opinion and grading. Great teacher and man.
Professor Lusztig is an incredibly intelligent man with a wide range of knowledge. PLSC 4370 often felt more like philosophy, sociology, or literature than political theory, and since it was his first time teaching the class, he was sometimes unclear about expectations but was very understanding when COVID came around. He's a tough paper grader.
Tough but fair. Great guy who promotes good discussion.
Lusztig's lectures are incredibly well organized, which makes note-taking a breeze. All of his classes have one midterm, one final, and a term paper. Sometimes there are small reading quizzes. The term paper counts for the most, he gives you three chances to write it. Take this class. You will learn more than you ever have before.
I wont lie, this class was tough, but Lusztig is a really fantastic professor. As long as you come to class and participate he is super helpful and will answer all your questions.
I'm disappointed that I have to write this review but Dr. Lusztig was uncompromising, unavailable, and one of the harshest graders I've ever had. He only had 5 grades go into the final (3 essays, midterm, and final) and if you don't understand the first essay, you're basically screwed. I was excited to take this class and Dr. L really let me down.
Lusztig is the worst. He is condescending, rude, and disrespectful. He expects excellence from his students but does not deliver excellence in return. He says to reach out if you have questions, but I did many times with no responses or vague responses. He withholds possible points on all essays. Class is detrimental to your mental health.
A very difficult class, but he is a very informative teacher and open to questions. Be warned, the research paper is no joke though he gives three tries to revise it. The exams are very difficult, the highest grade was 93 for both, and the quizzes consist of readings and taking notes, lots of notes, I took around 20 pages worth to get an A
he may seem tough, but the class is so worth it. most interesting classes ive taken at SMU. I have taken him twice, and would take him again and again. Very smart and knows what he is talking about. I usually zone out during long lectures, but he really knows how to lecture and use time effectively. I love his writing assignments. highly recommend.
Professor definitely knows his stuff. Lectures are good, a little hard to follow without power points or the use of a whiteboard (excepts on occasion for hard to spell words or illustrations). One term paper that is pretty difficult, test are hard, there is no real review- only a day that he lets you guess and ask questions.
This is not a class that you can "get by in". You have to show effort, enthusiasm, and participate! The professor respects that! Lectures are the most important, then assigned readings for tests! Papers are unorthodox but are fun if you follow instructions. Always go to office hours ahead of time. Professor is not a pushover but he is fair.
really nice guy! definitely makes you work for your grade. the paper is a challenge but you get 3 tries to do well and if you take his corrections seriously youll get an A. the tests are kind of hard just because its 20 regular questions and 1 essay which is grade objectively. go to office hours and ask questions in class
The Professor is no doubt a knowledgeable guy, and is someone who you can learn a lot from if you pay attention. However I will say If you are not someone who talks in his class and asks questions you will not earn his respect. He also claims he is a "tough grader" which pretty much just means insulting your work.
From the begining of class he tells you, you are going to fail the first paper. however, it is dropped depending on the other papers.
This Professor does not write things in the board, we would have to listen carefully to every word that he says. If your not the type who writes extremely fast word for word, than this not the class for you. I am a visual learner myself and it was pretty tough taking notes. His lecturing is what makes this class hard. This class equals depression.
Tbh I love his lectures but the only thing that compelled me to get on ratemyprofs is to say that his comments on paper submissions are always sooooo harsh like I have gotten some of the highest marks on the paper submissions so far but all of his comments still feel like getting punched in the gut. Maybe its needed tough love though.
Good luck. He is an amazing lecturer and I really loved going to class. But if you skip once you will be so behind. You will fail his tests if you dont know how to study (many do fail). But you will learn alot. I would take him again. Its not as hard as ppl say -- it really is doable, but its a lot.
This was offered as a combined honors section, and it definitely showed. To be blunt- this course is difficult to get an A in, though not impossible. However, even though I am not studying political science I still found the course to be very intriguing and Professor Lusztig certainly demonstrates mastery of the material. Focus early on the essay.
This class was not an easy task. I wasn't fully prepared on how to properly study or write research papers. But, Dr. Lusztig was aware that this was a new experience for me and was accessible during OH's for assistance. He was very open to helping. This was my only non-A grade for the semester, but, I learned a lot and enjoyed it!
Lectures were interesting and he tried to make a dull topic fun. His term paper is hard but he 3 tries + giving good feedback throughout the entire process and you can always ask him what each comment means in office hours. His reading quizzes can use up to 250 pages, but its open note, and its over the broad idea, so easy. Hard A, easy pass.
He is a god. By far the best professor at SMU. You will think every other class is a joke after taking his class. You learn everything you will ever need to know forever but you will not sleep for 3 months. It is worth it college is so easy after learning from him.
What an interesting man. He is a really tough grader but will meet with you to make sure that your addressing needs for improvement. Some of the comments aren't too helpful and consist of ellipses but thats the price of doing business with him.
I swear on everything that this guy writes fake reviews on his own page. I have no spoken to someone about his class and heard a good thing or an endorsement of him or the class. He is as a professor is one of the most difficult people to work with. I advise avoidance of his class at all costs.
The term paper for this course is insane. I have been told by many faculty that this class he teaches is the hardest it gets. So many people want to drop but can't. so many want to change their major that is how terrible the term paper is. If it wasn't for the term paper being so bad it wouldn't be THAT bad. No other professors do the same as him
He is a very straight forward man. He's a tough grader but he only tests on what we clearly discussed. His class is incredibly lecture heavy so attendance matters quite a bit but he makes sure that you actually understand the material. His term paper is hard but works with you a lot. He's a hardass but is genuinely a good professor.
This class is way too hard to be an introductory class. Easy to pass but impossible if you want to keep your 4.0. The class is lecture HEAVY. He is brilliant and expects his students to be the same. Don't take this class as a freshman!
For the sake of your mental health do not take this man. It seems he purposely wants to make you suffer. His grading will make you feel awful. He treats you badly when you go to his office hours. He only gives you 2 absences. If you walk in even 0:01 milliseconds late he will call you out. The class is definitely interesting but he's not with it.
Professor wants you to fail. His grading critiques are nitpicking at most and you will still get a terrible grade from his nitpicking. He seems to not understand the meaning of an introduction level course and I am beyond disappointed in SMU and him. He needs to be fired. He is rude& disrespectful & you will never want to take a polisci class again
This class is extremely difficult and will whip you into shape. He is a great professor, knows what he talks about but is incredibly strict for an intro level class. Almost impossible to get an A, but you will learn a lot.
Professor Lusztig is a fantastic professor. He is an arbitrary grader and is tough on your work, but it is not to make you fail but to learn. His lectures are content-heavy but very interesting and informative. His tests are ONLY on the lectures, not the textbook. He expects and appreciates hard work and effort from students.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. MANY FACULTY AT SMU WILL ADVISE YOU THAT THIS IS THE HARDEST POLI SCI CLASS YOU CAN TAKE BC OF THE PROF.
I took this class to fulfill a CC, thinking it would be easy for an intro class. WRONG! This class is really hard. He is a really good teacher & very intelligent but a super tough grader. Attendance is mandatory & there are only 6 grades the entire semester! There are 2 exams which are based solely on lectures which are everyday so DON'T MISS.
Yeah the final was terrible and way harder than the midterm. Impossible to get an A and hard to get a B. Not treated like intro lvl course, everyone says its the hardest pols class at smu
Professor Lusztig is hands down my favorite professor at SMU! This is a professor you need to take if you really want to learn. You will come out of this class with far better analytical and writing skills than when you entered. Plus, his lectures are always really entertaining!
One of my favorite classes and professors I've taken. Will call you out in class if you walk in late, on your phone, etc, but his lectures are very interesting and we had great group conversations in class. Be ready to take very detailed notes and spend a lot of time reading/writing. Take him if you're thinking about political science!
This is the worst class I have ever taken. I had a 4.0 last semester and dropped this class. He made this intro-level class harder than most upper-level poli sci classes. You had hard in depth reading quizzes, midterm and final, & 2 research papers. The papers were impossible the avg. grade was C-. DO NOT TAKE HIM i cannot express enough
I have taken professor Lusztig for two classes. Both were so interesting. Grades very dependent on ability to digest the lectures. Not a lot of reading outside of class. Midterms and finals are easy IF you study. The hardest part of this class is the paper but he gives you two chances to submit the paper and offers feedback on a first draft.
not an easy class but he made it really interesting. so knowledgeable and passionate. DO NOT BE LATE he will call you out in front of everyone. tests and papers are super hard but i personally learned a lot from his teaching style. no laptops, so only paper notes and he lectures the whole time. not for everyone but he's an incredible professor.
Utterly impossible with a horrifically difficult and angry professor, I cannot warn you to stay far away from this one, its a 1000 level class and it took up my entire semester only to exit with a mediocre grade. He will fail you and your life will be made worse for knowing him.
it's like people are afraid of him and won't speak the truth but this guy is downright abusive
Not as smart as he thinks he is.
Tests are ridiculous and so is he. Impossible with most is us getting Cs on average. Don't take if you care about your gpa.
Barely passed the class. Super lecture-heavy for exams. Reading quizzes based on textbooks. The essay is graded very harshly. Unless you have all the time in the world to craft the most perfect essay, good luck. Attendance and participation is important. Exams aren't bad if your lecture notes are good and you attend review days.
He is the worse professor I have ever had. If you don't need to take this class, DO NOT TAKE IT! He DID NOT let me take a quiz a day after even though I had sent him a medical excuse, yet he did let another student retake a quiz without any issue. Not friendly at all. He will make your life miserable. DO NOT TAKE HIM if you care about your GPA.
It was the worst class I have ever taken at SMU. Do not take!
Find Jesus.
This class is not easy but if you are here to learn, then you're in the right place. There will be frustrating moments, but I left the class feeling extremely grateful for his teaching style and all of the skills I gained, particularly in research/writing. The midterm paper is difficult, so visit the librarian multiple times and go to office hours!
I really struggled in this class. This was my first semester in college and he just wasn't nice, which intimidated me to ask questions eventually effecting my grade. No laptops, mandatory attendance, lectures everyday. There's nothing on canvas so if you miss, good luck. I wouldn't say don't take him again, but be prepared for a LOT.
