A wonderful, intriguing, funny lecturer. He really knows what he's talking about and it is a pleasure to go to his class. Tests are challenging, but you learn very much from it. My favorite class.

Dr. Lyons is an excellent professor. The class was pretty rigorous, but it was worth it!

Very organized and passionate. Although there was not allot of critical thinking needed. The exams and essays were merely repeating what he said for full points.

He really knows the subject, has a lot of experience, and will do about anything to help you. Also fairly good at teaching from an un-biased perspective, and he has his funny moments too. If you keep up on the reading, the class isn't too difficult.

Easily my favorite professor here at USU. The class wasn't easy, but it wasn't hard either. Made lectures interesting and had a lot of insightful information. I am really looking forward to taking another of his classes.

Great professor. His lectures are great and really keep you interested and even excited to go to class. If you study for the tests, you will do fine on them. He is really funny and makes for a great atmosphere in the class.

He made a somewhat math intensive class so much easier for political science majors who haven't taken a math class since their freshman year. His lectures are really interesting.

Professor Lyons is great! He is always willing to answer any questions that you have. He makes you learn the concepts, not just rote memorization. Yes, he's liberal, but he's generally objective in class. If an opposing view will offend you, don't take a PolySci class in the first place!

Lyons is easily my favorite professor. He knows his stuff and is extremely helpful if you need additional explanation. He does let you know what his opinion is sometimes, but he'll give you the arguments to the opposing viewpoint as well.

I really enjoyed the class. However he says he doesnt want people to memorize answers but his essays he looking for specific key phrases. I am not intested in pol sci so i didnt take the class serious. If you are getting a degree in pol sci go for this class but for generals no way.

Easily the best breadth class I've ever been in. Moves at a good pace and keeps the lectures interesting and informative. Not an easy class, but well worth it.

He was very, very good at explaining how political systems worked; very clear. I've heard rumors that he's not very helpful in his office, but he was very cooperative with me. If you're just getting started with political science, he's the one to go with.

By far one of the best Political Science professors. I think he is brilliant. He may be my favorite Poli Sci professor!

WAYYY interesting class! Attendance is mandatory, and take very close notes. Re-quoting things he says in lecture on the essay exams is a plus. Dr. Lyons is brilliant and has a great sense of humor. He is also very helpful. I sat and talked to him for an hour in his office one day. Strongly suggest this course!

Best professor at USU. Brilliant and unbiased in a part of Utah with a strong conservative lean.

Very interesting class. Has seven exams with the lowest score dropped. Three multiple choice, three essay and the final is a bit of both. Requires attendance and note taking as well as reading as the multiple choice all comes from the text. If you do the study guide you should be fine!

By far the best class I have ever taken. senate simulation is a lot of work, but so much fun and you learn a lot. Doesn't require a book, and is very effective in his teaching methods. I would recommend this professor!

I really like this professor! He's way entertaining, fun, and clear in what he expects of his students.

Dr. Lyons was not only my professor, but my advisor. It was not a good match, so I had to find another advisor. He told me to find another major 2 sems before graduating. And it also seems like he grades you based on his feelings toward you. He told me that he would give me a B because I had done the work to deserve at least a B. Well, he didn't.

Professor Lyons is so Hot! He's seriously my favorite professor in the PoliSci department and the best lecturer in the whole school.

I loved him. He was so much fun and he was passionate. He was always open to questions and didn't strictly abide by a syllbus.

He is a GREAT teacher! His class was by far my favorite. He is very passionate about the subject and is a wonderful lecturer. We were only required to buy one book (about 12 dollars). The reading assignments are sometimes heavy, but definitely worth it. I learned a lot from his class and I look forward to taking another sometime in the future.

Excellent course. By far one of my favorite professors and classes. No text book, one test, and a lot of practical, hard work if you choose to get involved. The hard work is worth it though, you will learn plenty and have a lot of fun in the process. Lyons is helpful and approachable, and definitely cares about his students and the subject material.

GREAT PROFESSOR, especially for your first course at Utah State. He is incredibly helpful, doesn't mince words, keeps things lively and is one of the few professors that can teach without letting their personal views or political opinions getting in the way. He doesn't hide his opinion, but is the definition of fair and balanced. Dr. Lyons FTW!

Dr. Lyons is one of the most entertaining professors ever. I would recommend him. Note-taking is super important, so be prepared to write fast. The essay tests are a bit tricky if you are not good at writing fast because you have to fit a lot of info in. Missing class will put you far behind. Doing the readings is important.

This dude is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's so passionate about what he teaches, and it makes learning about complex and difficult stuff, like modern economics and the messed up shiz that happens in congress, easier and more interesting. Everyone at USU should take a class from him. He's a smart-ass, but I love it.

Dr. Lyons is so great. He's a smart ass, but brilliant. Going to class and taking stellar notes is absolutely necessary for success, especially in his essay tests. Don't forget to read the textbook as well for multiple choice! This class isn't necessarily easy, but I still loved it. I learned so much and wouldn't have taken it from anybody else!

I never really cared too much about politics or government before this course. Professor Lyons is super nice and passionate about the topic, which made me want to pay attention during lectures. You 100% need to go to class or you're not gonna get the notes you need for the essay tests. This class was really interesting and I'd recommend it.

This is my second class from Dr. Lyons. He is SUPER knowledgeable and it's obvious he loves what he does. Go to class, take GREAT notes, and read. He is a great professor and I think EVERYONE should take a class from him.

Dr. Lyons is easily the best professor I've ever had. I changed my major to Political Science after taking his intro to US politics class (POLS1100). He is engaging, funny, knowledgable, helpful, and passionate in his teaching. Everyone should take a class from him.

Dr. Lyons is one of my favorite professors. He doesn't believe in busy-work (all the readings are relevant and necessary) and he does his best to make his course entertaining. I would recommend taking notes on a computer if you can type fast, because they're necessary to study for the test easily.

He makes political science so interesting. He's also really funny, passionate, and intelligent. You have to work for your grade, but you always know exactly what is expected of you. MAYBE not take this class your first semester of your freshman year, but definitely take it while you're at USU.

I love this class! You can definitely feel his passion in his work so it's easier to listen and believe the info he shares. Go to class and take good notes, but most importantly study exam questions and go to super sessions!! BIG time life saver. Quizzes matter so READ or knowhow to find things fast!

He is one of my favorite professors here at USU! He knows his stuff and is very passionate about political science. If you go to class every week and pay attention to lectures then you will pass. All the quizzes are online but are harder then the written exams. I would recommend this class to everyone!

Show up, go to every SI and you will be fine.

He's a fun professor that is witty in class and knows his stuff. He let his liberal bias show at times, but was generally respecting of my conservative viewpoints as long as I could articulate a strong defense of them. Although he says that he offers no extra credit assignments, there are tons of bonus points strewn along the way. I have over 105%.

Mike was amazing. He's this hilarious man that doesn't really bring his own political opinion into lectures and lets the students figure out where they stand on their own. You have 3 midterms and then a final and he drops the lowest midterm, but they are all essay tests. Go to the super session of SI and you'll do great.

I really enjoyed his lecture and learned a lot. The essay(test) was difficult for me, but that could be because I had not done them before for college. Extra help is available. I would take this class or another class taught by this professor again.

Fun class! There's a presidential fantasy draft that he only allows to help your grade. You need to do the readings that accompany the class to do well on exams. Attendance is mandatory for success. Do the exam study guides. His grading criteria for papers are always longer than what he expects you to write so he's very clear about what's expected.

I love Professor Lyons. He's my favorite professor I've had in 3 semesters at USU. He gives great, clear lectures, is very fair with grading, and makes Political Science interesting. Class flies by every time. Tests are difficult, but if you stay engaged and go to SI sessions and take notes, there is no way you won't pass with a good grade.

His tests can be difficult,though he gives out study guides that have the test questions word for word 2 weeks before the exam. Go to the SI sessions because they are very helpful. He only gives 4 essay exams (based on lectures) and 6 quizzes (based on the textbook)

Dr. Lyons is the man! Hes really kind and loves to help students. The structure of his class rocks. I wish every class was set up like this. Probably one of the best teachers I've ever had. Dr Lyons is my favorite professor. He makes every class so interesting and he genuinely cares about his subject and helping every student be successful. The quizzes require a good amount of reading but you know about them in advance. The essay exams are pretty easy as long as you consistently go to class. 10 out of 10 would recommend.

Class is really easy as long as you read the material and don't skip class. His lectures are interesting and he's really funny. He's helpful in office hours, whether you have questions about class or about political science in general.

I like Dr. Lyons, but he can be bluntly honest and it comes across as uncaring. His lectures sometimes go on a tangent. But the information is important and worth knowing. The group project was fun in this class. Essay exams are okay, but follow close attention to paper criteria. Also, not a big email guy -- face to face is better with him.

I looked forward to this class everyday! I had absolutely no background in political science and he made it interesting and engaging. I never got bored during lectures, and he would always write the lecture outlines on the board so taking notes was easy. All the tests come from lectures so make sure to go. The SI's are also really helpful for tests

I found that simply writing down everything he says (which he also outlines on the board) is all I needed. He has incredible insight (not just a boring explanation of government) and I felt smart just being taught by him.

This was a fun class for me to take because I enjoyed the discussions. The other POLS4990 sections had to do a big paper and this one just required an oral presentation. There was a fair bit of reading, but it was definitely manageable. There were occasional reading quizzes to make sure you read, but you could get away without reading sometimes.

Professor Lyons was great made class interesting and was very willing to help you get a good grade. If you don't pass this class its your own fault.

Class attendance is mandatory because essay exams are solely based on lecture material. Timed quizzes are open book. Lectures are really interesting and Dr. Lyons is very approachable after class if you have questions.

This class was so much fun, but took so much work and time. It was an amazing way to learn. It's boring at first and A LOT of the work is all at the start of the semester, but when you get past that, it's fun and easy! Be a good writer or be willing to brush up on your skills - the papers can be the kiss of death for how well you do in this class.

Six quizzes are given throughout the semester based off of reading assignments, they are so hard. You need to know the reading material forward and backward. BUT it is open book, so thats nice. Two weeks before an exam he gives out "study questions" to help you and those questions are exactly what the exam is, no surprises. Four essay exams.

Dr. Lyon's really makes you work for your grade. I did really well on his first 3 exams (he gives 4) and so I didn't have to take the final. Seems grumpy at first, but can be funny. I learned TONS from him! I would take it again, but it was still kinda hard. You learn lots!

Dr. Lyons is amazing! I would highly recommend him if you are considering taking POLS 1100. His lectures are the best out of all the professors I have ever taken. He makes his class hard, but its so you learn and his grading scale is different from the traditional, so dont worry too much if you score low on things.

I have had Dr. Lyons for four different classes. Although my grades have ranged from a "B" up to an "A" and in between, each class has been an incredibly rewarding experience. His lectures are engaging, and very informational. Make sure to do all of the readings, take notes, and show up to class. Would highly recommend any of his classes.

Lyons is an incredible teacher that does his best to remain unbiased about politics. He's funny, engaging, and I always learn during the lectures. Quizzes and exams are crucial, but he does have an easier grading scale and drops your lowest quiz score. Attendance is necessary unless you already have a basic understanding of the material.

I really liked him. He tends to ramble on random subjects but I love weird stoies so I didn't mind. You do need to read the online reading but the book isnt super helpful. Essays only, but he gives you a list of all potential questions so you have a week to get it all streight. You do need good with skills to get an A.

Professor Lyon's is a great professor, informational, and entertaining. You do have to go to the lectures to be able to succeed. In this class you have online quizzes you have to read for and then Essay Exams, that he prepares you for a lot.

This class might be a bit hard as an introductory course but I enjoyed it a lot. The professor made it enjoyable with good humor, and I loved that whatever we were learning I knew why it was important to me and my life. He was obviously knowledgeable. As long as you show up to class and make an effort to learn the material you'll do well.

Despite this being a more difficult class, I have enjoyed it. You are graded on essay exams and quiz, which both are open note. He was very informative, but get ready to work. It is still interesting and a good class. I would take another class from him.

If you're serious about political science, you'll appreciate Dr. Lyons as a professor. Read the text and you'll do well on his quizzes (open book, but READ beforehand) and if you do what he tells you, you'll pass the exams easily. He rewards hard work.

6 quizzes and 4 exams, he drops your lowest quiz score at the end of the semester. He gives study guides prior to every exam which are each similar in the questions are asked on the exam. If you complete the exam guide prior to the exam you will receive an A for the course. He offers help with TA and ample amount of office hours. Easy A.

If you enjoy political science, this class is a MUST. Easily my favorite course of the fall semester. He's the most talented lecturer you will ever have, and the course is easy to follow. Quizzes and tests aren't hard if you actually apply yourself. He's not mean, but he does expect effort.

Professor Lyons makes political science super interesting and fun to learn about. He's got a great sense of humor and is very nonpartisan in how he teaches. It is a tough course that requires a lot of studying before the essay exams and mandatory attendance and note taking. However, you'll definitely pass if you put in the effort. Def worth it!

This class is what made me change my major to Political Science. Lectures are super engaging. The textbook is interesting. If you're not interested in politics at all, take a different class, because it's more work than the average general. He's available in his office all the time outside of office hours, and there's SI sessions if you need help.

Prof. Lyons is absolutely fantastic. His lectures are hard, but every engaging and fun. Exams are hard, but not impossible by any means. Make sure you're taking his advice for passing the class and READ THE SYLLABUS. Studying everything is super important to do often to understand the content. He has really good office hours to help as well.

Professor Lyons is an awesome teacher. His lectures are interesting and entertaining. One of the biggest things that helped me in this class were the study sessions held by the TA outside of class. I only went to the ones right before exams and they go over all the answers so GO TO THOSE. Highly recommend this class and professor.

Tough Cookie, tough grader, high expectations, but you learn a lot and have the resources to do so. Great teacher, lots of essay questions for tests. Lectures are key, you won't want to miss. You can succeed with hard work. His passion and persona demand respect. A favorite of the political science department.

Professor Lyons' class can be challenging, but engaging lectures and helpful study sessions make it worthwhile. Attending class is key - missing lectures makes the material tough. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep alongside the textbook.

Very kind and smart man. Although he has strong political beliefs, he does a great job at staying unbiased during his lectures and presenting the facts quantitatively as they are. A handful of midterm exams determines entire grade in this class. If you come to class, take notes, and go to study sessions, you will pass these exams easily.
