Very nice and funny, makes the class fun. Some assignments were a little confusing but if you ask for help he is more than happy to help you. Fun class.
I really liked him as a person, and I feel like I learned a lot from him. But, if you're taking a really hard class load, don't take him! You'll basically die! 5 1-1/2 pg. assignments, 3 2 pg. critical responses, an annotated bib. and a 6 pg. min. paper. Plus, you have to read a biography and the textbook reading is required. Good prof, though.
I really like Mike. He's great at making you think outside of what you normally do. The writing isn't bad...a couple of 1 1/2 page papers isn't tough. He's pretty funny and cracks a lot of jokes. I had him at eight thirty in the morning and I actually didn't dread going at all. I'd reccomend him.
By far one of my favorite professors so far at GV. A good ammount of reading is required, but you're in college now, get used to it. A few 2 page papers are nothing to complain about. Exams are easy, and you get a full page front/back cheat sheet for each. Funny guy- still a college student at heart. Always willing to help, you just have to ask.
really chilled out professor. you can tell he really like to drink, and prolly smokes a lot of ganj too! nonetheless, he's pretty tight and i'ld take him again....you do have to talk a lot in the class tho
He is not very friendly and has a really negative style of teaching. His attitude towards society makes me wonder why he is teaching this course. He is not very easy to approach for help, he often responds by telling you how dissappointed he is and saying he expects you to know these things already
very good prof!! really makes you think about things you normally wouldnt. two exams, get to use cheat sheets, easy to pass. very strict on papers, and citeing, but a very good prof! i would reccomend him!!!
He says things most people think but dont have the guts to say I think you can only get offended by him if your one of those who act like you are better then everyone else He makes you think on your papers for sure, it makes you a better writer Even though the class had its boring moments He could still hold your attention He is on drugs..for sure.
good teacher. grades papers like its a grad. class but willing to help. easy exams, proj and quizes. lots of EC. the book and his class is very liberal and anti government to the point of annoyance.
If you're an art major, stay clear of this class. There is a lot of work required that you need to start more than just the night before it's due if you plan on getting any decent grades. Very tough to balance foundation art classes with this course.
Great teacher, his class is work though so be prepared for that. You absolutely need the book for the papers, and you have to use APA citation or you will fail. It's alot like a SWS I'm told. He is very approachable though, goto his office hours and he will help you with anything you need. Oh and yeah... When offered, you want the extra credit.
Loved this professor! Seems intimidating at first but if you go see him in his office and get to know him he's a pretty cool guy. Lots of writing though. But i would take his class again if i had to.
This prof was hilarious. He is super opinionated but really gets you thinking. Quite a few writing assignments but they are all like 2 pages. I totally recommend him and this is a great class for a gen ed!
Awesome prof! this is the one class i never think about skipping. Makes it super interesting and if you listen in class then its and easy course. Comes off scary at first but hes not
Awesome guy. You cant blow off his class though, but its college, so you shouldn't expect to. He's rough around the edges but he's cool about respecting people's feelings too. A few 2 page papers and 2 tests with note card. Lots of extra credit opportunities. I'd recommend him for sure.
He was entertaining in lecture, i didnt get bored too often, he allowed notecards for tests and gave extra credit opportunities. However, he graded rather harshly and somewhat subjectively on papers.
Overall great class. He makes it really interesting. 4 assignments, one is counted as extra credit if you do them all. LOTS of extra credit opportunities. If you read the material and listen in lecture, you'll do fine. Highly recommend!
He's not as scary as he seems. He assigns several papers, but he makes himself available to help you. You must go to class, because there are a lot of in-class points. You must read the book, because he quizzes. If you put forth effort, you can get a good grade, and he gives a large amount of extra credit.
He seems rough around the edges and intimidating at first, but if you go to his office hours, he's really nice! He does care, please don't think that he doesn't just because it comes off that way sometimes. Take him!
Mike is an awesome prof! He seems scary at first but he is very helpful. LOTS of extra credit opportunities. Lets you have a notecard on exams. No final exam. Take this class!
Macaluso was the coolest prof i've had, and probably ever will have at GV. Like others say, he seems intimidating, but an awesome guy to talk to one on one. The stories and pictures are great too. If you don't like his opinions, prove him wrong! Tests were reasonable, as was the final project. Wish I could have him for another class.
Best Teacher I've had for a sociology class, made it interesting and fun. Makes you think critically
He seems to fancy himself a bit of an ex-punk, and connects his life both current and past to the material at hand. He's extremely personable, he's eager to help, interesting, and tries to relate to his class. He keeps the material interesting.(He even requests chili peppers for this site. :P ) Favorite Prof so far.
He was an awesome professor. Although he seems intimidating at first, he is incredibly helpful. I was lucky to have him my very first semester at Grand Valley. If you're a decent writer and make a good effort, he will look over you're paper and you'll get a good grade. It's a good idea to read the textbook and the syllabus before you go to class.
Wonderful!!!
He is a great professor! He has a lot of pop quizzes and you have to write a lot of papers. But as long as you keep up with the readings, you will be fine. Attend class and he will like you and give you good grades. Overall great professor
Excellent as a person and a professor. He's gorgeous.
Great professor! I would recommend him because he is funny and makes discussion interesting. Many extra credit opportunities to help your grade. Not super easy but he isn't trying to fail anyone so ask him to help! No final exam is a plus!
Mike (he likes to be called by his first name) is a great professor. Not only is he funny and sarcastic, but also, he has no filter (which is hilarious). If you have an issue and need to turn in your paper late, then all you have to do is talk to him and he is very understanding. I gave him a chili pepper because I know he will read this :) ~Lane
Take this professor, go to class, laugh a lot, study, and do the assignments. Super helpful and nice and cute <3
a great soc teacher to have, hes totally anti government and tells a lot of stories about his "deviant" acts, its awesome. hes an out of the box teacher and a ball to have for a class
Very engaging!
Mike is a very engaging, intelligent professor. He allows extra credit opportunities as well as notecards on exams. He may come off as opinionated; however, he knows what he is talking about. I loved his class! Also, no final Big +.
One of the best proffesors I ever had. He is extremely passionate and opinionated. The class is very engaging. While depressing, he is hysterical. You will learn and he wants everyone to do well. Highly recommended.
He's rad. Don't challenge him without a death wish. He's great-- For real.
Mike is a great professor. He always made himself available in case students had any questions/concerns and he was more than willing to help you receive the grade you deserve. Study guides are clear and exams are fair. Read the book, get quizzed, know short answers for exams, put in a lot of time, get an A. I would recommend this prof.!
Prof Macaluso is an okay professor. He takes forever to grade anything and his assignment criteria are usually vague. He is very opinionated, and while that maes his class engaging i rarely feel that i've actually learned something from him. I wouldnt go out of my way to avoid him, but i wouldnt go out of my way to take his class either.
Very opinionated and sarcastic. Great professor, he just tried too hard to be funny sometimes. If you're sensitive with certain topics such as feminism, i suggest avoiding him as a professor because he jokingly bashes on it a LOT. For the others, it's a very eye-opening course because he tells it how it is on important issues in the world.
He is a great professor. This is the second time I've taken a class with him...he is funny and knowledgeable. He's very willing to help anyone if needed. Can be a hard grader on papers though but that's especially if u don't follow the requirements. Otherwise, great class! Interesting!
He is very funny and knows a lot about the subject. He is always giving extra credit and is willing to help, you can tell he doesn't want anyone to fail; as much as he may say otherwise.
I thoroughly enjoyed MacAlluso's class. As long as you go to class, read whatever books he assigns you'll pass. For this class we never had any tests, just a couple papers that really made you think. He completely changed my outlook on a lot of different things, very enlightening. Strongly recommended unless you're extremely conservative.
Sarcastic and intimidating at times. Always there to help though and is clear on instructions. Bonus he assigns a lot of extra credit
a very intimidating proffessor but as long as you read and do a good job on your papers you will do good in the class, plenty of EC offered, definitly not a class you can just slack off in though. he grades papers very harsh and expects them to get better as the semester goes on. tests are somewhat difficult, you have to read through them carefully
he is a great professor. he keeps the class interested while giving you information. He is very strict about what he wants in his papers and his tests are hard but he gives you a ton on extra credit and is willing to help all the time. well when he is on campus. take his class you wont regret it. oh and he is very sarcastic.
Professor Macaluso is an interesting person. He jokes around a lot. He says crazy things though that aren't meant to be a joke, so it can be hard to tell when he's joking and when he's serious. He's strict on his paper requirements, but they're not that hard to write, except for the final paper. There is no final exam either, which is nice.
Intro to soc was a great class with him, but he was really strict when it came to paper requirements and citation. He was always trying to scare us with his grading scale, telling us that we would straight up fail if we didn't do this or that. Overall, not too bad of a class if you keep up and pay attention.
Sarcastic and crazy but a lot of fun and willing to help out
He is one of the best professors I have ever had! Although he can be somewhat intimidating and sarcastic, he is hilarious! He takes the paper requirements seriously, but if you just follow those you will do fine! He lets you use a cheat sheet on exams and gives out lots of extra credit points! Take him!
This professor is passionate about what he teaches. The class inspired me to take responsibility for my actions, reevaluate my every day behaviors, and establish new habits that may make a difference for generations to come! My interest level became 110% and I truly considered changing my major because of how much I enjoyed it!! Take it!! Enjoy it!
Class is very straight forward. 4 written assignments, 3 are mandatory, 4th is for extra credit. FOLLOW HIS WRITING REQUIREMENTS. Kind of asmart ass, but in an endearing kind of way;)
I love this man. He can come off intimidating at first, but he is the greatest professor I have ever had! Take him! You won't regret it! (Unless you're super conservative...be cautious of his sarcasm)
If you like sarcasm, you will love this guy. As long as you do the readings you will do good on the quizzes. The exams you get a page of notes and the papers are easy if you follow the guidelines. I looked forward to every lecture he is VERY funny and VERY sarcastic. If you're easily offended I wouldn't recommend this class.
I learned a lot from his class, but I seriously did not like his personality. He is really cocky and likes to say demeaning things. Even though much of the time it is sarcastic, it makes for an uncomfortable learning environment. I felt like I could not approach him. You do get a page of notes though, so that's a plus.
He's a pretty cool guy. He can be really sarcastic and seem disparaging at times, but he's usually doing it to make a point. Notes and powerpoints can be a little disorganized but the class is easy to understand if you keep up with the readings. Seriously, follow the paper guidelines. Learned a lot, interesting class.
Hes entertaining and chellenges your way of thinking. However he is not very clear on requirements. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities, but you will need it because he is a hard grader. Not very friendly but will help if you ask. Theres 5 papers, 1 project, 2 exams and lots of pop quizes. Don't take this proffessor if you want an easy A.
Ive read a lot of negative things and i they are all false. He may say a lot of "deameaning" things but its his perspective and i learned a lot from him. He's super helpful. he's not mean at all and his class is very interesting. he's the BEST. Take him!
Hes an overall good professor. Nothing I would brag about but not a terrible one at that. He is very sarcastic and comes off as intimidating, but as long as you do the readings and follow his guidelines, there is no reason you should get less than a B.
Michael is a great prof with great passion. If you are offended easily then DO NOT take his class. He makes a lot of little funny insulating jokes. If you read everything, do the reviews and make the cheat sheet for the exam, there is no reason you should not get an A. He offers a ton of extra credit so just go to class and pay attention.
Best professor I have had by far! He is very picky about the assignment requirements but makes it very clear all semester of what he wants. He is sarcastic and funny and as long as you aren't an idiot you wont experience it first hand. Highly recommend taking him in any class he teaches!
He is a great prof! He does expect a lot with papers, but tells you exactly what he wants. His class is actually fun and his lectures are so interesting. If you work hard and are not an idiot you won't feel the wrath from Mike.
Hes a good professor. he can be quite an sarcastic man, but he really wants to help you. He gives you specific guidelines you must follow in order to get a good grade. Gives lots of extra credit in order to succeed. Very easy to do well in the class, and very easy to get an A
Mike was a great prof. Lectures were always fun to be in, this was a class that I actually enjoyed going to just because he makes it upbeat and interesting rather than boring and just straight facts. If you're offended easily do not take him, he makes little remarks on topics that could be offensive. Helpful prof, I would definitely recommend him.
Loved him! He made class enjoyable and fun. He is somewhat an easy grader, but whenever you have questions he is happy to answer them! He makes the topic exciting and has a lot of expereince. He is an easy grader and lets you use notes on exams. I would take him!
While he's a very engaging professor, and funny, expectations are more difficult than every 300 level class I've had. Reading is constant, and the tests are extremely specific. His papers, while having easy topics, are VERY particular for grading in APA format (never discusses how to write APA, expects you to know). Overall, would not take again.
While his lectures are interesting and he seems to be passionate about his field, the papers he assigns are impossible and he expects you to spit back his obviously very liberal views. As an entry level course, he really turns a lot of students off of the field of Sociology. I would not take him again, nor would I advise anyone to take him.
Dr. Macaluso does a good job of exposing students to a different viewpoint than they would normally consider. He is quite liberal, & pushes his viewpoint harder than necessary. He also guides students in discussion to agreeing with him by using yesno questions. He's funny, tells you what's on tests, & lets you use a whole page of notes for tests.
He never gives any true rubrics for papers or major assignments, so you must pay extremely close attention to what he says and how he says it. Great lectures, always entertained and interesting.
He expects too much for an intro class. His grading policy is way to difficult and unless you specifically write his viewpoints on a topic, you are basically setting yourself up to fail. I have to do more for that class than for any class for my major. Try to get another professor if you can.
One of my harder classes this semester, but definitely worth taking for an into to Sociology professor. MacAluso is hilarious most of the time and makes going to class worth it. However, he can be extreemley critical in the way he grades papers, so watch out! Tests were a challenge to but if you study you should do fine. Overall, great professor.
He has a very clear point of view and makes sure students know it. If you don't read you won't pass the class. Most assignments were easy if you understand sociology. Grading was not very clear, but he was willing to help if you went to his office hours. I would not recommend taking any of his classes.
Mike is a super helpful professor. He is hilarious, passionate and truly wants every student to succeed. In the beginning he does come off as insanely strict, but as long as you show up to class, do your reading, and pay attention he will do whatever he can to help you if you need it. Pay attention to rules for papers, ask if you don't understand.
Prof. Macaluso was very interesting. at first he may come across as a sarcastic jerk but he is a really nice guy. if you don't do the readings you will have no idea what he is talking about. sometimes gives pop-quizzes but if you read you will get 100%. gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and you can earn up to 30 points XC. overall very good
He is kind of outspoken and has a strong opinion. His class is very interesting. We had a lot of reading and his power points are crazy long- you will need a big binder. HE WILL GIVE YOU POINTS BACK IF YOU TALK TO HIM. This got me an A. Go to his office hours and he will help you outline your papers & tells you exactly what he wants in them.
By far one of my favorite professors at GVSU. He is opinionated but he is very intelligent. He will challenge your perspectives. This course is eye opening and interesting. You can learn a lot from Prof. Macaluso and he is absolutely hilarious, so that helps
A very genuine teacher that is also very outspoken. If you get offended easily, be careful of this professor. Understands you, but isn't quick to sympathize. To be more specific, he gives criterion on his papers that he 100% EXPECTS you to follow. Follow those criteria exactly. TRY in his class. Ask for help, he's very willing. Tests are fair.
MacAluso was a really egotistical teacher and a really tough grader. If you are a freshmen and struggle with writing papers, stay away form this professor. Would not recommend him at all.
Do not take this class as a first semester freshman, papers are difficult to write. Macaluso is hilarious and a really great teacher and he makes class interesting, but he's really hard. He expects your opinion on papers to reflect his and has specific criteria. The 2 books you read are enjoyable. DO THE READING there are many pop quizzes.
Macaluso does not play around. He is extremely clear on what he wants, how he wants it and when he wants it. Funny professor, and gives great real world examples for text info. Brings real world issues to light and shows how important they are for students to be aware of. I would definitely take a class with him again.
Tough, but fair. You will learn in his class. He has an interesting sense of humor, but is really a nice guy and actually cares about your grade. Offers extra credit, and will let you re-do assignments sometimes if you did awful. He does a lot of quizzes based on the reading. If you don't read you will fail the quizzes but if you do they are easy.
you will learn more in this class. Professor Macaluso seems jerk but he is not, he really cares about students and a fair grader. Don't be terrified in the first class. We had 4 paper assignments (3 pages minimum), two exams and a final project (4-5 pages paper and poster presentation like in science fare). Crazy sense of humor. Take him
For the most part, this professor/class were ok. We read a couple books that were interesting - make sure you keep up with them. As for papers, he tells you what he expects and even if you follow the rubric exactly, it's still pretty tough to get an A on them. Lectures are kind of entertaining. No final exam, only an easy project. Lots of EC opps
I enjoyed his class. Yes, he's 100% outspoken and may come off rude/arrogant but it's through humor, which is similar to mine. You'll read a couple of books. READ bc you'll be tested! A few exams, final paper/project. Very demanding on his grading criteria. Visit office hours and he'll help you with your questions. MANY EC OPPORTUNITIES!
Macaluso was hands down THE best professor I have ever had. He has high expectations for each of his students, but is willing to help all of them succeed (if they are willing). He assigns a lot of reading, lectures are easy and exams are easy. He's also super sarcastic (DON'T TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE THAT). He also offers A TON of extra credit.
Expect tons of homework, tons of reading and a very critical grading process. You will not have free time. You will not get an A in the class, unless you are already an expert in sociology and are willing to put in at least 12-15 hours per week outside of class. Don't expect an A in the class. He will find a way to crush your self-esteem. Good luck
MM can be intense, but his passion makes for lectures that are both entertaining and informative. He can also be quite cynical and sarcastic, which I loved. Slackers and whiny babies are no-nos, so do the work, TRY HARD, don't whine and you'll ace the class like me! HE WILL NOT CODDLE YOU, but if you come to his office he will help you all he can.
He is somewhat rude, if you don't have a good sense of humor you will be offended by him. Overall if you try in the class he is a nice guy. There are 4 major papers, but if you do them in a timely fashion you will do good on them. Reading is important but not difficult. Overall the class was hard at first but it gets easier. Good professor
For a 101 level class, standards are extremely high. Anal with his expectations regarding writing and citations. I would think that content would outweigh writing skills for a 101 level class but.... Difficult tests Don't let his dry sense of humor fool you. Any teacher that makes themselves available for Sunday study session shows he cares.
I wish I could have marked "extra credit" and "get ready to read" as well because those are very applicable. He gave out one pop quiz where all the answers were C. He's intensely sarcastic and you have to get used to him. I loved his cynicism by the end of the semester, but some people still hated it. You also have to work really hard but easy A.
Dr. Macaluso is highly offensive and an extremely hard grader. He grades his papers extremely harsh, if there is the slightest thing missing he will give you a zero. DO NOT take any of his classes.
Professor Macaluso makes you feel dumb when you visit his office hours, and is not very helpful. He assigns so much work due very closely between other assignments that it is impossible to keep up with. He expects everyone to be an expert in sociology. There were so many papers due that students thought it was an SWS class. He's very intimidating.
Thought he was hilarious. Have to work hard on the papers to pass them. Go to office hours for help, really understanding and willing to explain things. Lots of extra credit opportunities.
There is a TON of work involved with this 100 level class. I remember him saying that it used to be a 200 level class and even though it switched, he wouldn't change the amount of work. I went back and forth between hating and liking his sarcasm. It's definitely possible to get an A in his class but you have to be willing to do all of his busy work
Everyone gets mad at him because he actually makes you read and if you don't, you will receive a worse grade. READ PEOPLE!!! If you read everything he assigns, you're golden Ponyboy. Also, go visit him in his office hours. He is willing to meet up almost any time because he's at Au Sable almost all day. He also holds review sessions for exams.
He was such a great professor. Lots of extra credit opportunities and drops the lowest grade of the 4 papers you write and adds it to extra credit. Lectures were always interesting and if you did your work you were golden for the semester. Lays out exactly what he wants in the syllabus. Great professor, would definitely recommend.
Macaluso is a great prof that wants to see his students do well. He has a sarcastic and funny sense of humor so don't be intimidated, he is more than welcome to help any way that he can and is available for questions which is nice. Talks a lot about grad school and what to expect which is helpful. Overall a great guy & one of the best profs
While the workload is heavy he is always available to assist students. Wants his students to excel. There is a lot of work but it was a 300 level course and was manageable. Will work with you if you get behind.
This course is worth your time as long as you are willing to put the time into it. Macaluso puts in effort to create an engaging and unique course, and expects the same from students. Don't be intimidated by him - he's actually really funny and extremely helpful when it comes to assignments!
The work load is heavy but lots of extra credit. If you talk to him he will help you with the work and papers. Follow directions in the papers and it is rather easy. Grading is explain thoroughly.
Jokes around a lot (awkwardly), didn't provide much feedback or guidelines, lectures weren't very helpful, takes a while to grade.
I turned my 'auto-pilot' on in Macaluso's class and paid for it towards the end of the semester when a ton of course work was due last second- don't be like me. Macaluso doesn't hold your hand through your work, so if you're not on top of priorities it will come back to bite you. Overall caring guy-but he weeds out the students who don't work hard.
He is so awkward and sarcastic. If that is your type of prof, take him. If you're like me and find it distracting, don't. You have to read the assignments to pass. His notes are very messy and hard to follow because their is so much info on the slide. He does drop the lowest paper, which is nice. He's a very ok prof.
Offensive humor which I find hilarious. Very understanding guy although he may seem intimidating. I enjoy going to class. Reading the textbook helps a lot. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE EXTRA CREDIT
Macaluso is very sarcastic and can be pretty rude at times. If you're not sensitive to that then he's good. You have 2 tests but they're really hard. Lots of papers. If you show up ad work hard then you'll be fine!!
OK, for people saying his class is hard, they just don't read directions. Yes, Prof has an offensive humor which some love and others don't. Papers can be difficult but he lays our his requirements explicitly and the topics to them aren't difficult. Definitely 101 class load but I learned a lot! Super cool guy and talk 1:1 because he is SO helpful!
Macaluso has a stern exterior, but he truly wants whats best for his students. He's critical on papers because he wants his students to grow and think critically on sociological concepts. He is super helpful if you come to his office hours and put in effort into his class.
This class is a good choice for SOC 101. He really cares about his students, and although he can be sarcastic at times and seem scary, he is willing to help you a ton. He is very helpful with rewriting papers and is willing to meet even outside of his office hours. There are 2 exams and a final project, but tons of extra credit. Easy A if you try.
His sense of humor is offensive, and that bothers some people. I found him absolutely hysterical. He comes off as intimidating, but GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. He is actually so caring and I found the class easier and more enjoyable once I felt like I knew him more. Take advantage of extra credit. Use a ton of terminology in your papers & PARTICIPATE.
His sense of humor could be really offensive but I found it enjoyable and easier to pay attention to his lecture. However, he is a hard grader for the papers and the second exam was very difficult and is very intimidating! But gave a lot of extra credit so that was helpful.
Everyone says he is mean/offensive but in reality he just has a good and sarcastic sense of humor. Take advantage of the extra credit!!! For both of the exams he lets you use a full sheet of paper to write info on. He is fair on his grading, I never thought he was too hard, but you have to actually try. Moral is just apply yourself & you'll be fine
Honestly, he says a lot of stuff that is pretty off-color, but he's just being sarcastic and trying to have fun. I found him hilarious. I enjoyed his lectures and class a lot. He grades papers pretty heavily, but it's still pretty impossible to get less than an A in his class with the amount of extra credit he offers.
Mike is a super cool guy. Dont take him if youre easily offended, because his sense of humor may put you off. He knows what hes talking about and hes passionate about it. Just do the work and youll get an A easy. Tests let you use notes.
Lecture is mostly just him ranting. There's 3 papers and 2 assignments (also papers) that he grades harshly but there's so much opportunity for extra credit. He basically scares you into coming to class. He's smart, but I didn't learn anything in this class. I feel like he would be a good professor if he actually put more effort into teaching.
Lecture is not ranting and notes are often posted for the course content. The reading is average. While papers are graded critically, there are a lot of free in class points and extra credit. You must be willing to work.
Makes the class interesting. Gives points for the people who attend class so you shouldnt skip. Papers are graded hard but it balances out w a lot of free points. Should take studying for test seriously
I really like his sociology class. Generally, he is a good professor with a personality to keep you engaged. There is not a ton of continuity between the reading assigned and his lectures, however. But if you read, it should be alright.
Macaluso is by far one of the best professors i have ever had. he's down to earth about what he teaches and wants his students to succeed. If you don't go to class you wont pass. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities which really help your grade. He's blunt and has a darker sense of humor so if you're easily offended don't take the class
He comes off mean at first, but honestly hes a great guy. He wants the best for you, if you make an effort and actually attend class then when you need help hell give it. Mainly go to class and try your best on everything. Overall would highly recommend taking him for soc 101.
I loved his class. My favorite class for sure. He makes class really fun he's hilarious definitely very sarcastic and a smart ass but that's his personality. If you cant handle a little sarcastic humor you won't like him. Its very hard to fail and he is always willing to work with his students all you got to do is talk to him. Definitely recommend!
I haven't completed a full semester with him yet, but overall, he does care about his students. He can come off as rude, but he is usually joking and just wants the best for you. If you don't read the textbook it will be hard to pass the class. He gives you very clear information about what will be on the test, so you're good as long as you follow
I personally wouldnt recommend this professor unless you absolutely have to take him. He uses intimidation of previous experiences to scare students to not speak out about how hes just absolutely rude to them. Probably the most unprofessional professor Ive experienced at Grand Valley and think it would just be better to steer clear if possible
Professor Macaluso was such a great professor! He always made me laugh and made it easy to learn. I highly recommend taking this professor!
Although very sarcastic he really loves teaching about the truths behind sociology. He is extremely well rounded in terms of media, people, history, and environmental issues. You need to attend to truly understand his mindset. Hes hilarious and brings the class together. I have friends and knowledge to this day that I made in this class. Macdaddy
Professor Macaluso tries really hard to give the best and most update information in his powerpoints. He also gives good feedback on papers as to why you got the grade you got. expect to work hard for paper grades but as long as you do the readings like youre supposed to and pay attention in class its very easy to apply yourself for a good grade.
Funniest professor/teacher Ive ever had. Very honest, blunt, and sarcastic in his teaching but he genuinely cares about the material and his students very much. You HAVE to attend his lectures regularly in order to fully understand the way he teachers. Overall a great person that is always accessible outside of class. Work hard & youll get an A.
You get out of his class what you put into it. His rubrics are vague sometimes. He teaches well and makes his students think critically. His humor is out there, but it makes dreary topics less heavy. Lot's of opportunities for EC and you get a note sheet for exams. The only reason for a bad grade in SOC101 is laziness. Overall, great person/prof!!
Prof Macaluso is very knowledgable about the subjects he teaches and he is very passionate about it. If you read the material that is outlined in the syllabus for each week, you'll be fine. do your homework, pay attention, and you should be good. If you ask for help, and are willing to put in the effort, he is more than happy to work with you.
Expects you to do the work but very will to help out and always available in office. If you read and attend the class you should do very well.
Professor Macaluso was an amazing professor! He was always trying to give ways to help any student with papers and other assignments and wanted everyone to succeed. I would 100% take another one of his classes. People think he can be intimidating but he genuinely cares about your success and if you read and show up you'll be fine.
My favorite intro class my freshman year. Totally accessible and cares that student do well. He will go out of his way to help.
Professor Macaluso is willing to help you with assignments and citations. He is rather harsh and is very sarcastic but for the most part is fine. You must follow instructions exactly b/c he is very rude if you don't do something correctly. I accidentally messed up one assignment and he sent me an extremely rude and harsh email about it.
Great prof. Lots of papers because of it being a 101 class, but he is always accessible and wants to help. He gives tons of extra credit and is hilarious! He is intimidating to most at first but hes really cool if you just talk to him. Definitely a professor to get close to!
I LOVED taking this class with Macaluso. He is such a funny guy. At first he can be a little intimating or careless, but if you try your best in this class he doesn't mind one bit helping you. He can be a little scary at first, but he really does care. He goes out his way for every student. He also gives SO much extra credit too.
This professor has engaging and tough lectures. You can tell he puts a lot of effort into making the class accessible to all learning styles. He can come off as unapproachable if you do not share his humor, but I assure that if you make effort to communicate with him you will enjoy the class. Expect a long paper at the end of this class.
Fun professor, funny and sarcastic humor. Kind of scary at first, but really nice and helpful when you actually show up and participate. If you don't show up, you're screwed. big papers, kind of a hard grader, but gave extra credit.
4 papers (you only have to do 3 b/c one gets dropped, but I recommend doing all b/c tough grader) and lots of quizzes. In papers you have to use his notes which I think is challenging, but if you ask for help he will give it to you. But, he comes off as non-approachable, even tho he says he is. He also told us not to email him b/c he was annoyed.
Hard class. Hard professor.
Professor Macaluso is by far the worst professor I had this semester. Does not understand how to navigate online teaching during COVID-19. Incredibly rude in emails and takes multiple email attempts before you'll even receive a response. To those who have to quarantine or get COVID - good luck. He rarely posts the lectures online.
Professor Mike is very chaotic. He does not really stay on track during lectures and he rambles a lot. He grades papers really hard, but sometimes he lets you fix your mistakes. He gives a lot of extra credit. He seems like an intimidating person but he's alright. He is really bad at explaining.
By far the worst prof I've ever had. Told us we weren't allowed to email him and when we did, always received a rude response back. Very unapproachable and just plain up rude
Despite the craziness of COVID, this was an enjoyable class. Yes, he was difficult to deal with at times but as long as you make sure you follow the requirements on the rubrics for assignments (super important!!), turn things in on time, and make sure to show up to class for lectures, you will do fairly well in this class.
Nice prof, but kind of hard on your for a 100 level class. You use the textbook a ton, and if you skip class, you're in trouble. Not very clear on instructions for papers and constantly goes back and forth. As long as you do your work, you're fine.
Would not take again. He emailed our class and told us to basically stop emailing him because we were annoying. Mind you, we were a staggered hybrid. He was very rude and claims that everything that is wrong with majority of the class not having things done has nothing to do with him being the professor.
I had this professor for a hybrid class during Covid. If you struggle in his class he is really good at making you feel dumb. He tells you that he cares, and I think deep down he does, but he is a harsh grader and doesn't stay on topic during class. Also, he told us that he makes up ratings on here to boost his score, so don't believe all of them!
Follow instructions and you will do well.
Had this course in fall - was difficult due to covid but the professors was highly accessible and always wanted to help. Very blunt and a little sarcastic.
He is a very approachable and understanding professor. I was struggling in the beginning of the semester and he allowed me to have more time for things and met with me. He cares about his students and will help if you make the effort. His lectures are engaging because he is funny and sarcastic. He may come off as intimidating but he is genuine
Very understanding prof over covid last semester. Willing to take the time and meet with students. Always available in office to help further explain class materials.
Macaluso can be intimidating because his personality is really bold but he is a nice guy and makes his class contemporary and interesting. I actually enjoyed going to his class. He offers an insane amount of extra credit. Be ready for lots of reading and go to office hours if you have questions because he hates emails. Easy A if you do the work.
For a hybrid one day a week class it was good. It would likely be much better in person but he was usually accessible and really worked with everyone to make sure their work was turned in.
Macaluso can come across as unapproachable, but when it comes down to it, hes an understanding & reasonable guy who genuinely wants students to succeed. Hes always available during office hours to help. If you do the work (there isnt a ton), try your best, and follow the syllabus, this class is an easy A. He also gives out a ton of extra credit.
Professor Macaluso was not my favorite. He can be very rude, but deep down he can actually be a very nice and funny guy. There are four papers throughout the semester that are pretty difficult but just make sure that you start the papers early and do not wait until the last minute. He is very fast on email and will genuinely try to help you.
Overall he presented the content well and gave notes outlines which were extremely helpful. There are chances for extra credit and as long as you follow directions, he's a fairly easy grader. However don't even bother trying to email him because you likely either won't get an answer or he'll be extremely passive aggressive about it
During COVID he was so helpful and understanding, BUT, he wasn't just going to give you a free pass. You can't expect to never come to class and get his grace and help. If you put in the effort to learn and do your work, as any one should in a college class, he will be more understanding when life happens. He also offers a LOT of extra credit!
A good professor for preparing you for the real world. Definitely tells you like it is but gives you many chances to redeem yourself. Seems intimidating but truly wants whats best for his students. Easy to access outside of class. Assignments took lots of time and effort but easy to do. I would love to have him as a prof. again.
hes a fun professor to listen to but it felt more like a history class to me instead of soc. he always made jokes and lightened the mood for class but was an ASS when u talk to him one on one. he does give out lots of extra credit but he is very strict on assignments and grading. im still redoing ass. 1 LOL
Awful teacher. Grades like a writing major. Does NOT answer emails and doesn't follow his office hours. So hard to contact him. Even if you miss class for a serious matter, he has no empathy and will fail you.
Just save yourself and don't do it. I feel like he must have previously been a better professor because of his past ratings. He graded everything very tough, and he gave us many difficult writing assignments. He also made us read 2 novels about Native Americans, which would be fine if it was history, but he teaches sociology. I didn't learn a lot.
Would not recommend taking Macaluso by any means. Always seems to come into class with a negative attitude. Is very rude when visiting him in office hours. Grades tougher than any professor Ive ever had. Feels much more like a writing class than a sociology course. Makes a 101 level class much harder than it should be.
Did not learn a lot through this course because it was mostly a Native American history/ writing class. I would encourage anyone to switch out of this class immediately, he grades very hard and has no empathy. This class is by far the hardest 101 class I have ever taken.
He can come off mean/scary, but I think its to get kids to start on work and get it done. He hates emailed conversations, so if you need to talk to him, office hours are a must. He has very interesting lectures and can be pretty funny. I would take him again. Follow his directions for papers to a T or you will not get a good grade.
Professor Mike comes across as very scary, sarcastic, and biased. He can be quite offensive to those with opposing views. However, when you meet with him in his office he is very nice. As for the class, he puts way too much emphasis on a 101. However, if you put effort into all of the work and take every extra credit opportunity you will get an A.
4 papers, lowest of the 4 can be dropped for extra credit. Final paper and final presentation but no exam. A lot of in class points/assignments so do not skip class often.
I wont lie, Mike is a tough grader but he is specific on criteria needed to get a better grade. He also offers a checklist for papers. You will have to read the textbook to pass, but it is fairly easy to read and quiz questions come straight from text and lectures. If youre going to skip class, dont skip the lectures.
Honestly the BEST and funniest professor I've had so far at GVSU. Quizzes/papers are based off of reading material and in class material. Also a FAIR grader, the criteria he looks for is extremely clear, and he was always willing to discuss things with students, regarding any confusion, questions, or grades. Take advantage of his office hours.
I loved that this professor offered many opportunities for extra credit! He can be a tough grader, but he provides detailed rubrics with the paper requirements. He comes off a bit rude at times and can be offensive to those with different views. I liked not having exams, but be prepared to write papers! It's necessary to read the textbook for class
By far one of the best professors there are at GV. Very sarcastic, very honest, and very fantastic at teaching. If I had the time and money, I would take more courses under macaluso. Assigned Fahrenheit 450 for one of the texts and its now my favorite book ever. If you have to take sociology and like to work, take his section.
He gives detailed instructions on how to write assignments and what to include in them BUT he grades very tough. his emails back to students are rude and short. before turning in any papers, make sure you have all of the requirements. attendance is mandatory and he may give extra credit by just going to class
Very nice professor that cares a lot about his students. He offers a lot of extra credit and sets you up for success in his class. However, he is an extremely hard grader and grades harder than most writing classes, so make sure to follow his guidelines exactly. If you do all the extra credit he offers the class isn't bad.
Lectures were understandable fill-in-the-blank slideshow notes. All the papers required heavy amounts of textbook and note use. There were 3-4 mandatory papers which were easy if you understood them. He was usually in his office if you needed him, and gave honest feedback on assignments, and if they were bad he'd tend to let you fix them.
I definitely recommend taking Macaluso. He is available to meet almost every day and gives lots of easy extra credit. There are 4 essays you have to complete, but none are very difficult, he makes the criteria very clear, and he is more than willing to help with any questions. As long as you follow his directions you will do well in this class
He grades very hard and expects lot out of you even as this is a intro class. He is very funny and sarcastic, you will be reading and studying a lot. Make sure you pay attention in his class because stuff he says in class will have to be used again and on his quizzes, he is a good teacher and good person and gives out good extra credit.
LOTS of papers and readings. It took a lot of dedication and hours outside of class to earn the grade I did. If you want to learn sociology, you're better off choosing a different professor so that it would be more enjoyable and you'd most likely learn a lot more
Even though the topic of sociology was not my favorite, Professor Macaluso was one of my favorite professors this past semester. He is very real/honest and makes class extremely entertaining. There were multiple papers that were tediously graded based on citations but once you understand what he is looking for, you will get good grades on them.
if you do badly in this class, it is 100% your fault. He offers extra credit and office hours to help you with papers and give you good pointers. Consistent offers for extra credit that can be interesting and enjoyable. He is also very funny which makes class more engaging.
He was super funny and nice, quizzes were online and mostly graded on a few papers that were extremely easy if you read the chapters. easy A!
The workload in this class is ridiculous. I am taking 3 other courses right now -two of which are 300-level classes - and this one has more work than all 3 classes I have COMBINED. He makes class interesting but is most definitely not worth the tradeoff for the work assigned. Be prepared to read, write, and take pop quizzes/assessments very often.
I actually really liked him. There were 5 essays and he is pretty tough grader, but he makes it clear what he wants so its easy to get a good score on them if you try. His lectures are very entertaining and he does a really good job at teaching the subject, I learned a lot!
Professor Ma class is based on 5 different essays and one HUGE final paper in the end. He will periodically throw in quizzes on the textbook that he expects you to buy which I used maybe 2 times. Overall he can be an extremely tough grader. he likes things done one way and if it is not done that one way he could take you from an A to a D. STAY AWAY
He is funny in class so it keeps you listening. Although he is not very understanding. He gives many extra credit opportunities which is really nice. You have four big essays and one final essay all of which he tells you exactly what he wants, but you HAVE to stick to it to get the grade. Even on in-class assignments he grades hard.
I would not recommend this class, there are 5 essays, and the hardest 101 class I've taken. The guy is cool but its super hard and he is a extremely tough grader and is not afraid to give a zero for small mistakes. Do not take this class if you wont show up or don't want to do 5 essays that affect your entire grade.
This professor assigns so much work: 5 papers (including a final paper), presentation (part of final), and several quizzes on bb. You have to read several books throughout the semester and cite them into the papers. If you don't use the book or his presentations enough he fails your paper. He also requires you cite every 2-3 sentences. DONT TAKE!
This was the most difficult 101 class I have taken, mainly because of the amount of homework that is required of you. Hard grader, especially for papers. Lots of extra credit opportunities so take advantage of them. Lots of homework due each week when papers are due so make sure to plan accordingly. PSA Don't start your final paper last minute!!
I tried for over a month to set up an appointment to go over DSR. He never answers emails and is rude the one time he does. Being disabled is hard enough without the professor avoiding his emails for appts. He's bad at communicating. Never includes directions for HW on BB, so you don't know how to complete the work if u miss a class unless u meet
He tries to be nice sometimes, but makes me extremely scared to turn in any assignment even if I put my heart and soul into it. He has torn me apart in emails, and in general is not the teacher you want if you have any self respect.
Easy class - as long as you listen.
I hear a lot of complaint from other in my course but if you talk to him and set up times to meet he is very accessible.
Prof Macaluso is a very entertaining lecturer, & he cares a lot about the success of his students. His class is never boring, as his wit sneaks into every topic, and he uses real-life examples to make the world of sociology come alive. He encourages diversity, difference of opinion, and examining the impact of our observations, which I appreciated.
Overall I felt that the class was fair. Most work comes from four short essays, quizzes, and a final paper. He can be a tough grader on papers, but he gives SO many extra credit opportunities. If you utilize the EC and his office hours, it would be hard not to get an A in the class. He does require a textbook, I would recommend reading it.
He is very funny and connected with students. Very sarcastic and can be controversial but overall he is a really nice guy. For my class we all kind of had a bad ending to his class due to medical problems affecting his mood but before that he was really nice and understanding.
He was a pretty cool professor. The class was a lot due to the amount of assignments and homework we had to do. He gave out alot of extra credit opportunities and me personally I didn't take the opportunity because I wanted to see if I'll pass without it, meaning you can still pass without doing extra credit. Attend class to make it easier on you.
Despite the glowing reviews from the previous students on ratemyprofessors, I did not have that experience with this professor. His emails were rude, and one would expect the response email 2-3 days later. He does have extra credit to make up for the harsh grading. It could simply be the online format, but he was among my least understanding profs.
This was by far the most disrespectful professor I have ever had. I ended up dropping his class after he gave me back a paper I wrote with a ? on it. Confused I looked inside the pages and it said can you ever read? And then made another comment about me not knowing how to write. Ended up not majoring in sociology because of him.
Prof Macaluso is a lively lecturer who makes sociology engaging. The workload can be heavy, but with the help of resources like unstuck ai, you can stay on top of things. Attend class and utilize office hours to succeed.
A lot of essays, but if you put in the work he's not hard. Compared to any other class i have right now his class is pretty simple. Make sure to read and go to the writing center for help on essays or his office. Overall he is a great man and professor
He is very harsh and not understanding, has very strong opinions-if you don't agree with him, he won't like you. He grades the papers SUPER harshly. If you don't put the textbook in the paper more than 10 times he'll give you a bad grade. Lots of homework and papers, very hard for a 101 class. Wouldn't take him if you want to enjoy college.
Honestly, he was pretty chill most times until it came to papers. the instructions are pretty clear on the papers, and you HAVE to cite the book and notes. he was just a super harsh grader when it came to the papers so that was rough. Other than that he's a pretty nice guy and gives good feedback. Just do your work and read and you should be good.
Professor Macalsuo was not a great professor. There's not a ton of homework, but he has three papers, a final project, and a presentation. If you don't meet his standards on the papers, he won't even look at the paper or will just flat out fail it. He's a funny guy, but he is super rough, very strict, and unapproachable, don't take the class.
He's hilarious and definitely made my first semester here the best!
He's a nice enough guy, he's pretty funny and he's clearly very educated on knowledgeable on the topic. That being said, I wrote more essays in this class than my WRT 150 class. 5 total essays, and he's a tough grader. If you really love sociology, you might like his class, but I can't personally recommend it
- Great professor, 5 / 5. - If you show up and do the work, you will get a good grade. - He is an honest and passionate professor who gives everybody a fair shake. - If a student is struggling, he will reach out and offer help. He is committed to his students' success.
Ignore the negative reviews. The bulk of them complain of his grading. If you show up, do the work, and meet the requirements for assignments, you will get a fine grade. I cannot stress this enough - He will clearly and repetitively state requirements for papers and assignments. It is not that hard, and he is a passionate and caring professor.
This class is quite frustrating at times. He is a very good lecturer, but the amount of essays he gives are ridiculous, and he rarely grades them in time before the next one is due, so it's hard to get good feedback. I'm currently finishing my final and he hasn't graded 2 of the 4 essays I've submitted, all of which were on time
overall this is a great professor. he cares about his students success. he can be a tough grader, but he offers many opportunities for extra credit. he's an entertaining lecture and has a sarcastic personality. this class is paper heavy, but instead of a final exam its a presentation with a research paper.
I would not take this prof. again. He is very sarcastic and doesn't talk to you like an adult. Overall, so many papers and he takes forever to grade them. All quizzes are online and no tests. The final is a research paper and presentation. I would look for another prof. but you can definitely pass with him.
This professor worked diligently with me to get through the course. Had tons of office hours and stayed over to ensure I could meet with him. Was a very fair grader.
He complains about his job in every single class, saying he will no longer reply to emails, ranting about grading, meetings, and every aspect of his job. His rubrics are vague, misleading, & miss requirements. He yells at the class, is rude, negative, and unapproachable. Writing papers that please him is harder than papers in my difficult classes.
Professor Mike is tough. The administration asked him to simplify his 101 course, but he refused. He's textbook-heavy, and missing one class puts you behind fast. Essays are very hard to get A's on, and office hours often feel rude or condescending. Great if you love SOC, but for a gen-ed, definitely pick another.
